The real fire alert begins now. Towns and shires in CFA District 22 ofﬁcially moved into their Fire Danger Period on October 28 – and stay there until May 1 in 2020 unless otherwise updated. District 22 Operations Manager Tony Owen said low winter rainfall across the Goulburn – from Cobram on the Murray through the high country and down to Benalla – meant the grass and bush were dry. “The ﬁre potential is further increased by Bureau of Meteorology forecasts that the next three months will be drier and warmer than average. “What little rain we have had has given good grass growth on roadsides and unmanaged areas, so we have good fuels in place

with the potential of a busy grassfire season. “While we and our partner agencies are doing everything we can to prepare for the bushfire season, we look to the community to use common sense and take responsibility for preventing fires.” He also urged north-east residents to use the short window of opportunity left before summer arrives to clean up their property if they had not already done so. “Reducing fuel loads now will ensure that if a fire does break out, it has less chance of taking hold or spreading.” Moira Shire is also urging residents to prepare their homes and yards. Shire mayor Libro Mustica said council officers have been

undertaking a rigorous annual program of roadside maintenance and inspections which plays a vital role in preparing for the 2019/20 ﬁre danger period. “We work closely with the CFA, Victoria Police and DELWP to assess levels of risk and co-ordinate our mitigation works. “Our role is to support emergency services in any critical situation and we then share this information with the community through our various communication networks. “We want to ensure that if there is an emergency situation, people are informed and able to leave an affected area quickly and safely.”

Council drops trusts By Jessica Micallef Hume council will stop providing support services to the Sunbury and Bulla Cemetery trusts from next year. Councillors last week voted to cease providing administrative, operational and secretarial services to the trusts, in response to a council officer report which stated they were not a “core service of council”. The Sunbury Cemetery Trust pays Hume council $20,000 per year for the services. The Bulla Cemetery Trust pays $12,000 each year. The annual fee also covers booking funerals, record keeping, lawn and garden maintenance, burial of ashes and responding to customer service inquiries.

Sunbury Cemetery Trust member of more than 25 years, Jack Ogilvie said he was disappointed by the decision. “If we had been given the opportunity for proper public consultation, I’m certain we would have been able to work something out,” he said. “What is a core service and why can’t we sit down with Hume [council] and discuss this because I am certain we would have loved to have done that.” Cr Jack Medcraft said the council was not in a position to provide Sunbury with a “proper maintained cemetery”. “We want to have the best cemetery service that we can have,” he said. “It needs the proper care. Council’s existing services are only able to provide a basic service.” The council will stop providing the services by July 1, 2020. Alternative providers have been identified. Cr Jodi Jackson said it was a “bit of a stretch” for council officers to label the services as not a core service of council. “From my perspective, cemeteries provide a wonderful amenity for our community,” she said. “Now we are palming off our involvement with the cemetery trusts. “I think the average resident wouldn’t find it acceptable. This is not in the best interest of the broader community. I am sticking up for the thousands of people in our community who have loved ones resting in these cemeteries and for those residents who shall come to rest there in the future.”

Belinda Nurse reigned supreme as Lady of the Day at her first ever Kyneton Cup. Ms Nurse paired an embroidered gold beaded top with puff sleeves with a skirt made by her local dressmaker in Horsham. “I had been planning the outfit for a few months,” she said. “The experience was amazing. Petition urges water upgrade By Jessica Micallef A Kyneton resident is calling on the state government and Coliban Water to “urgently” upgrade the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant. Sallyanne Craig claims local waterways are being “poisoned” and has created an e-petition calling for the plant to produce class B water only. About 250 people have signed the petition since it was started on October 20. “The plant is unable to cope with increased demand from population and industry growth,

resulting in Coliban Water releasing class C water into local rivers, streams and lakes,” Ms Craig said. “This has resulted in the pollution of the waterways, threatening the ecology of the streams and rendering the water unable to be used by farmers, fishers and … recreational users. “Coliban Water … have stolen from the community what is rightfully the community’s – a clean, healthy river.” Class B recycled water can be used for human use.

Class C recycled water cannot be used for drinking, food production and filling swimming pools or spas. In June, Coliban Water was forced to undertake a daily emergency discharge of class C water from the plant into the Campaspe River which runs through tourist destinations including Lake Eppalock and Turpins Falls. “Tourism is a big drawcard for the Macedon Ranges so when you have poisonous waterways and signs saying ‘don’t swim’, that’s a really big downer for the whole region,” Ms Craig said. “Upgrade the Kyneton Water Treatment

Plant to a standard whereby the river is protected. We want it to be upgraded to be the best facility that only produces class B water.” Last month, Coliban Water announced plans to install additional aerators in lagoons to ensure water released from the plant is within the Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) licence conditions. The Divine Divas of Sunbury are taking their singing talents to Belgium. The female choir group will compete at the World Choir Games in Belgium in July next year. Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to hand in any unwanted, unregistered or illegal firearms as part of a two-month amnesty. The amnesty, which kicked off on November 1, allows residents to surrender firearms and weapons to police stations in 12 local government areas, including the Macedon Ranges, without fear of prosecution. The Campaspe, Greater Bendigo, Loddon, Central Goldfields and Mount Alexander regions are included. It’s the first amnesty to be held in Victoria since the national amnesty in 2007, when more than 340 items were handed in to police stations and firearm dealers in Victoria’s western region. Victoria Police Superintendent Paul Margetts said residents had until December 31 to present to the police any illegal or unwanted forearms for them to be destroyed. “As far as police are concerned, if just one illicit firearm or weapon is destroyed then that has made Victoria safer,” he said. “Rural and regional property owners are at risk of firearm theft because of geographic location and isolation and extended absences from properties where firearms are stored.” Residents are encouraged to phone their police station before bringing items in. All firearms must be wrapped in paper, plastic or cloth and be transported to a police station in a safe and secure manner.

Artists in the making Forget the likes of Pablo Picasso and Leonardo da Vinci –St Anne Primary School pupils are the best new artists in town. The pupils at the Sunbury school showcased their colourful creations at a three-day art show earlier this month. Art teacher Patricia Quinn said the school hosted an art show ever year. “This year, the kids had two, two-dimensional pieces of art work each and at least one or two three-dimensional pieces of art work so it could be a sculpture, collage … paper mache,” she said. “On the Friday we had a grandparents day. We had a lot of grandparents come in. It was a really nice way to showcase the work that the

kids do in the arts.” About 650 pupils showed off their masterpieces across the three days. Ms Quinn said the atmosphere at the show was buzzing with excitement. “They [the pupils] love art. They were all extremely proud,” she said. “They all have an art folder so when their family came through they could show the work that they had done. “It was really exciting to see the kids’ work. People were blown away with how talented the kids were. It starts to show that they have a lot of skills.”

Coliban Water has launched a Water Hero Kindergartens resource book for early learning educators to teach children to become water wise. The handbook features a range of activities, routines, and printable resources to help classrooms save water and use appropriate waste management strategies. The handbook will be distributed to kindergartens throughout Kyneton and Trentham.

Sporting wins Seven Macedon Ranges sport clubs, including Gisborne Cricket Club, Lancefield Junior Football and Netball Club and Macedon Ranges Soccer Club, have received a share in more than $737,000 through VicHealth’s Active Club grants. The money will be used to create sporting opportunities for women and girls by providing female teams or programs, facilities and equipment. Drinking water taste change

By Jessica Micallef Andrew Clement is ready to swing into action for an important cause. The Romsey resident will tee off next month as part of the Cancer Council Victoria’s Longest Day – a 72-hole golf challenge to raise money for cancer research. Mr Clement said a mate in Sydney took part in the challenge last year, which inspired him to put together a team for this year’s event. “A few of my mates and two of my sons thought it would be a very good cause,” he said. “We all like our golf so what better way than

Teeing off on cancer to have a bit of fun and to raise a bit of money.” This year marks the first time Mr Clement will participate in the golf challenge but he said the Cancer Council held a special place in his heart. “Both of my parents had cancer,” he said. “My father died of bowel cancer which turned into liver cancer. He had three big operations and he lasted five years. “Mum had breast cancer early on, which didn’t kill her but she ended up with dementia. “Mum passed away six years ago, and dad was about 14 years ago.” Mr Clement’s team, Old Bull Golf, hopes to

raise $10,000 for cancer research. But the golf lover has set his own goal. “I’ve got my personal target at $3000 [and] I’ve got about $807 at the moment,” he said. “Hopefully that builds. Our team has 10 members and we’ve got a team target of $10,000. We have about $4500 already. Western Water customers in Macedon Ranges may notice a slight change in their drinking water this month as the water supply reverts from a Melbourne system to the local supply. In April, Western Water began transferring water from the Melbourne Water supply system into the Rosslynne Reservoir to help increase its capacity due to “dry periods”. During this time, Gisborne, New Gisborne, Gisborne South, Riddells Creek, Macedon and Mount Macedon residents received their water from the Melbourne water supply system. Lancefield, Woodend and Romsey residents received their water from a blend of local sources and the Melbourne water supply. These towns will now have their water supplied from local reservoirs. As of October 29, Rosslynne reservoir was at 26 per cent capacity. Western Water manager Graham Holt said the water transfers are designed to “bank” water to ensure supply to the region during summer. “Having access to multiple water supplies ensures we can meet customer demand and cater for a growing population,” he said. “As the water supply is changed to the Rosslynne Reservoir, Western Water customers may notice a slight change in taste. Fashion and fun at Kyneton Cup By Jessica Micallef Thousands of racegoers were trackside as Miderm took out the 2019 Kyneton Cup last Wednesday. The 3500-strong crowd watched and cheered as Midterm dominated the 2000-metre feature race, crossing the line in front of Double You Tee and third-placed Pacodali. Kyneton Racing Club events operations manager Lisa Evans said the 2019 Kyneton Cup was one for the ages. “It was a great atmosphere,” she said. “It was a family-friendly event and the sun came out in the afternoon, which was lovely. “There were lots of contestants for Fashions on the Field and it was popular as ever. “It was a great day for racing, great day of entertainment. People were really engaged and there were no incidents.” The ladies took to the runway for the Fashions on the Field competition, contesting categories from Lady of the Day,all the way to a children’s section. Belinda Nurse was named the coveted Lady of the Day. Emma Scodellano was presented with the Most Impressive Millinery award while Bridget Aldridge and Tim Foster triumphed as the best couple. Whips start cracking By Jessica Micallef Kiera is whipping herself into shape. The 16-year-old Salesian College Sunbury student will be demonstrating whipcracking for one night only at the Kyneton Show this weekend. Kiera has been cracking her whip for six years, following in the footsteps of her older sister Madison who now teaches whipcracking in England. “People are drawn to it because it’s something

they haven’t seen,” she said. “It’s something different, something not everyone knows about or does. It’s also something that’s a very old art.” Kiera will perform a range of competition standard ‘cracks’, highlighting the art of accuracy and tricks at the show on Friday night. She is encouraging show-goers to try their hand at the old craft. Show president Vincent Lakey said up to 5000 people are expected to attend this year’s two-day show. “This year we’ve got the carnival show bags,

horse events on the oval, a large dog show,” he said. “We’ll have the parkour maze where the kids can run, jump and climb. “It’s [the show] getting bigger and bigger. “There are more people coming to the show and they get a much better atmosphere than the Melbourne Show.” The Kyneton Show is on November 15-16 at Kyneton Showgrounds, 184-194 Mollison Street. Optus customers in the Macedon Ranges can look forward to improved coverage across the region. Four new sites in the Macedon Ranges – Newham South, Hanging Rock, New Gisborne and Kyneton West – have been boosted with improved connectivity and coverage in the past six months. Optus territory manager for north west Victoria Luke Dietz said he was delighted Optus would be providing improved mobile coverage. “We are thrilled to be … providing communities in the area with real telecommunications competition and great value,” he said. “Ensuring Australians are able to access reliable mobile coverage is something we are continuing to prioritise. “For regions like the Macedon Ranges, it means greater safety for people living, working and travelling through the area by unlocking access to communication. “The Macedon Ranges most renowned natural landmark Hanging Rock is one of four sites that will now see improved Optus coverage. This site is a hub of recreational activity for locals and tourists alike.” Mr Dietz said the coverage in Kyneton West builds on an existing Optus tower in Kyneton, which provides expanded service to the east and north of the town. “The introduction of these four new sites demonstrates our commitment to the Macedon Ranges region.” Jessica Micallef

SPORT Boldiston ready for new challenges at Romsey

New Romsey netball coach Adam Boldiston is looking forward to the challenge at the Riddell District Netball League club. In a coup for the club, Boldiston was last week appointed the Redbacks A and B-grade coach for next season. Boldiston has represented both Australia and Victoria as a player and has coached in the Victorian Netball League. He has spent four of the past five years coaching the Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Netball League. In that time, they won a premiership, finished runners-up, and claimed the minor premiership the past two years. Boldiston said he had wanted to continue coaching at Sunbury, but the committee had decided to head in a different direction. He said he was bitterly disappointed with how Sunbury handled the situation, claiming the club was not up-front with him. However, the Lions’ decision has given

Boldiston the chance to explore new opportunities and he is excited by the challenge ahead of him at Romsey. “I’ve got a good vibe from Romsey,” he said. “It seems like a good fit and a good club. “It’s a refreshing new challenge. I get to work with some new players and hopefully I’ll bring a few of my girls with me. “I’ve got a renewed energy.” Boldiston said early conversations with Romsey had been encouraging and that they had a plan in place. He said one area they were looking to focus on was having more interaction between the netballers and footballers. “They’ve been very welcoming from the first conversation,” he said. “We’ll look to do some pre-season together … we’ve never been able to achieve that at Sunbury. “They’ve [Romsey] been very open and

Tigers lose in overtime By Tara Murray Kyneton Tigers fell agonisingly short of beating the Bendigo Braves for the first time on Sunday in the Country Basketball League north-west competition. The bogey team for the Tigers the last two and a bit seasons, the Tigers pushed the Braves all the way after leading for much of the match. The match went to overtime, with the Braves getting across the line, 66-62. The Tigers were fast out of the blocks and led 19-15 at quarter time. They continued that in the second quarter and were able to extend the lead to eight points at half time, leading 34-26. The Braves got back into the game in the third quarter before a thrilling finish. Both teams hit shots in the final minute, with the Braves scoring a three pointer through Olivia Noter to level the scores at 58-58 apiece right on the final siren, sending the game to overtime. The Braves hit the last six points of the game to seal the win. Tigers coach Adrian Adams had mixed feelings about the result.. “We had our best game for the season,” he said. “We’ve got the talent and the potential, we’re just not getting reward for effort.” Adams said you couldn’t question the effort of the team throughout the season, but they were let down by execution at times. He said it was the case in the third quarter against Bendigo. “We let them back into the game,” he said. “You can’t sleep on a team like Bendigo which has good range with its shooters. “We turn the play over too much … We kept the turnovers down until the third quarter.” The Mangan sisters led the way for the Tigers. Rachelle and Jess Mangan scored 13 points each. Brooke Mangan chimed in with nine points. Adams said throughout the season they’ve had a number of contributors across the board. He said Jess Mangan and Molly Greetham were big on the boards, while Rachelle Mangan and Kasey Ward provided a spark off the bench on Sunday. The Tigers have a bye this weekend. The loss leaves the Tigers with just one win from their first five matches, having lost the last four. They currently sit third, with four of the five teams in the competition to play finals. Adams said they were hoping things got easier for them after the bye. It was a tough weekend for the Tigers men’s side. They fell 96-58 to the Braves.

Broadford leaves RDFNL competition The Riddell District Football Netball League will lose a second club in as many years, with Broadford on the move. The Kangaroos announced on their Facebook page on Thursday afternoon that they would be moving to the AFL Outer East competition. They will compete in division 2 next season. In the post by Kangaroos president Bonnie Cavanagh, she said members were overwhelmingly in favour of the move. Of those to vote at a third special general meeting, 47 members voted in favour of the move, while only five supported staying in the RDFNL. “Following methodical research and consultation, three special general meetings were held to present a variety of options to ensure the BFNC were placed in a best fit model for football and netball into the future,” Cavanagh said. “It is an exciting and proud time for us as we look to the future and embed a sustainability framework that will preserve our club’s history for another 120 years.” The AFL Outer East website confirmed Broadford’s move had been ticked off earlier this week by AFL Victoria. RDFNL operations manager Jordan Doyle said the league was disappointed to lose Broadford to another competition. “The RDFNL board are disappointed that Broadford FNC has decided to move to AFL Outer East,” Doyle said. “The league and AFL Goldfields staff have worked tremendously hard in helping the Broadford Football Netball Club remain sustainable and competitive in the RDFNL. “Unfortunately, the members of the club have decided to move to a league that they believe will be a better geographical fit and one where they believe they will be able to be more competitive on the field.” With Broadford’s departure, the RDFNL will be a 10-team competition next season. The move comes 12 months after the Sunbury Kangaroos left the competition to join the Essendon District Football League. Tara Murray

Lions hope to roar after making coaching changes The Sunbury Lions have a new coaching set-up as they look to head in a different direction in the Ballarat Netball League. Despite being one of the strongest netball clubs across the board, the Lions decided to part ways with head coach Adam Boldiston after three years. Luke Marko Rawlings has been appointed A-grade coach for next season. He will be supported by Kim Bailey, who will be a director of netball and the under-19s coach. Lions president Hedley Duhau said they were excited about what Marko Rawlings could bring to the club. Marko Rawlings comes to the Lions having coached Romsey in the Riddell District Netball League the past two seasons. “I spoke with Luke directly and he has some

really good experience playing as well as coaching,” Duhau said. “He has some good ideas and will fit in with the direction that we want to go. We feel it’s a good time to head in a new direction and Luke will welcome in that new era going forward.” Marko Rawlings said he was excited to join the Lions. He said the timing was right for him to move on from Romsey. “It’s a new club and it’s a new competition,” he said. “There will be plenty of challenges that I’m looking forward to getting my teeth into.” Marko Rawlings said he didn’t know much about the Lions, but had heard good things about the club. He said talking to people, it seemed like it would be a good fit for him. “It’s a good opportunity to grow as a coach,

they’ve got multiple sides and are able to attract new players. “I’ll be able to develop as a coach with new players and new experiences. I think I have a lot to offer them and they have a lot to offer me.” Marko Rawlings said not knowing many of the players, it would be a fresh start for both him and the playing group. “I’ve got no expectations of who is there.” He said with the competition having a bigger spread of areas, he expected it to be a stronger competition than the RDNL. Marko Rawlings said he was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Bailey. Bailey is no stranger to the Lions. She has coached a number of sides at the club over the years and coached many on the under-19 team.

“I’m a big fan of hers,” Marko Rawlings said. “I’ve been working with her at Geelong. The experience behind her will help me develop as a coach.” Duhau said he thought the partnership between Marko Rawlings and Bailey would work well. “Kim is a really good asset for the club,” he said. “She will be more like a mentor of Luke, with Luke still being fairly young. She’ll be able to help with recruiting players as well. “To get both together is the ideal scenario. Hopefully Luke develops with us.” Duhau thanked Boldiston for everything that he had done for the club during his time as coach. Tara Murray

Tough day for Woodend By Tara Murray Woodend finally got onto the pitch but it was a day to forget as it conceded first innings points to Bacchus Marsh in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. After a loss in round one, Woodend’s past four matches have ended in draws due to wet weather, leaving them without a win. Facing Bacchus Marsh, also without a win on the board, this match is a must win for both sides. The Bulls came out on top, claiming first innings points at the end of day one in the first of the two-day matches. Woodend playing coach Greg Matthews said it wasn’t an ideal performance, after a number of weeks without a result. “We have lost four games to weather which is a bit disappointing,” he said. “We backed ourselves to be at least pretty close in all of those matches. “We had several players out of our regular side on Saturday which didn’t help, particularly

with the batting. We had a few younger players come in to see how they would go.” Woodend was bowled out for just 82, with Nicholas Dugdale-Walker top scoring with 34. Matthews said the lack of batting throughout the season so far had hurt them. “Some of us haven’t batted all season, which leaves us a bit underdone,” he said. “Bacchus Marsh bowled well, but our batting was not quite up to scratch. Our shot selection was not the best and it’s what got us.” Bacchus Marsh quickly made 3-99 before declaring and sending Woodend back in to face 12 overs at the end of the day. They will resume at 0-34. Matthews said they were focused on trying to get something out of the game. “Both teams need to get as many points as they can,” he said. “We’re trying to be positive and trying to get something out of it. We finished off getting a reasonable start [to the second innings]. “We want to bat some time and see where we get and you never know what will happen.

“We can hopefully get some time in the middle.” With weather wrecking the first part of their season, Matthews said they need to step up for the rest of the season. They currently sit fifth, having claimed points in each of the four draws. “It’s pretty important to get early wins in the one-dayers. Due to factors outside our control, every game is important from here on in,” he said. In other results, ladder leaders Gisborne are on track for an outright win against St Anthony’s. The Dragons bowled St Anthony’s out for 90. Mick Allen took 3-10 for the Dragons. Gisborne was 1-173 in reply, with Jarryd Vernon and Tom Sanders both on 77 not out. Star of the show on Saturday was Diggers Rest Bulla’s Indika Massalage against Sunbury United. Massalage scored a club record 266 to help his side to 4-450 off their 80 overs. Romsey is 1-46 in reply to Riddell’s 149 in the other match.

Sunbury suffered a shock loss to Glenroy in Bowls Victoria pennant, division 1, section 2. Hoping to gain some momentum after a good win the previous week, Sunbury was upset on its home green. While it was a close match all day, Sunbury came away with just two points in the 91 (16)-78 (2) loss. Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was a disappointing result. “To get only two points was disappointing,” he said. “Glenroy has been pretty strong over the years and always a tough nut to crack, but it was a game we had expected to win, especially at home.” Carla Krizanic skipped the only winning rink, winning 24-19. Jay Bye-Norris’ rink lost 22-18 and Todd Trewarne’s rink lost 25-23. Mark Cowan’s rink had a big loss, 25-13. Glennon said Peter White, who was in Krizanic’s rink, was the standout in the loss. Despite the loss, Sunbury remains in second spot. Top side MCC also suffered a loss. Glennon said they were in a good position after six rounds. “It’s a nice position and it was only a minor blip on the season. Overall it’s a good position to be in.” It was a good weekend for Sunbury overall, with four of its six sides getting wins. The second side had a 98 (18)-52 (0) win against Werribee 3. Derek Houghton’s rink had a day out, winning 30-5. Bowls competitions across the state have a bye this weekend, with the Vic Open being held. Several Sunbury bowlers will be competing. Tara Murray
