Macedon Ranges residents will have an extra bin for their waste from next year. Councillors last Wednesday gave the green light to introduce a mandatory separate glass collection service starting in February. It is estimated it would cost the council more than $1 million to implement the extra bins across the area. About 20,000 Macedon Ranges households will be provided with a 140-litre kerbside bin with a purple lid for glass. The glass bin will be collected every four weeks. The glass will be processed by recycling centre the Alex Fraser Group and reused in construction materials. The service will begin in conjunction with a weekly food organics garden organics (FOGO) service that will allow residents to place food and vegetable waste into their garden bins. The first glass-only public recycling bins were installed earlier this month in the Macedon Ranges. The 240-litre bins were implemented in Darraweit Guim, Gisborne, Kyneton, Lancefield, Malmsbury, Riddells Creek, Romsey, Tylden, Woodend and Macedon. Macedon Ranges council said it looked at public safety, distance to nearest transfer station, ease of access for the community and access for collection trucks when deciding where the glass bins would be installed. Following the collapse of recycling group SKM on July 25, the council’s kerbside recycling was stored at Four Season’s Waste facility in Kyneton. However the facility only had the capacity to store about 14 days of material and as of August 10 all recycling has been directed to landfill. About 622 Lancefield residents are currently taking part in a glass recycling trial. Those residents can continue to use their glass-only bins provided as part of the trial which will end in January. The bins are collected monthly. According to a council report, glass from recycling bins had “reduced significantly” from 31 per cent to about 5 per cent by the third collection in the trial. Macedon Ranges mayor Janet Pearce said she was delighted with the community’s effort to remove glass from recycling bins. The council will explore options to reuse glass locally as part of a feasibility study. The results will be considered by the council in April. The council will contact residents over the coming weeks to provide more detail about the bins.

By her own admission Demie Atherton is not your usual “girly girl” But the Sunbury resident was among 30 contestants who participated in the Miss World Australia Victorian preliminary final earlier this month. The 22-year-old said it was a last minute decision to apply for the competition. “The application opened maybe a month or so ago but I only applied maybe a week out,” she said. “It was quite stressful. I was trying to find last-minute dresses and book hair and makeup in. “It was a really good experience, it was something different.” Ms Atherton is no stranger to being in the spotlight, having done modelling in the past. “I started [modelling] back in 2014 and I went up to Queensland and I did a runway show,” she said. “That was my first ever experience of modelling and I actually enjoyed it.” Outside the beauty world, Ms Atherton is studying an education degree. “I’m the complete opposite to the girly girl,” she said. “I ride horses, I ride motorbikes, and I’ve grown up on this acreage so doing this was definitely something different. I was not used to all the glitz and glam. “I still have a year left of studying so I’ll continue that. I’ll continue with Miss World to see what happens. I want to explore more in the modelling industry because I do love it. I also have a few plans to travel next year.” Jessica Micallef

Kyneton Airfield decision delayed By Jessica Micallef Kyneton residents could be waiting up to four months to find out if up to 10,000 annual flights could land and take off at the Kyneton Airfield. During last Wednesday’s council meeting, councillors unanimously voted to defer making a decision on the Kyneton Airfield Masterplan 2019, but set a deadline of February 2020 for a decision. In July, councillors agreed to undertake a six week public consultation period for the plan. More than 120 submissions were received, 12 per cent of those were objections.

They included inappropriate use of ratepayer funding, air and noise pollution, the airfield’s proximity to built-up areas and the lack of benefit to the community. Flights at the Kyneton Airfield could almost double from 5110 to 10,000 a year under plans outlined in the draft plan. Up to 12 privately-owned hangars, three aviation business hangars, an office building and a tourism hub could also be built on part of the airfield currently zoned for farming. The airfield covers about 197,000 square metres and is used for recreational flying, flight training and by the CFA.

Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said it was a “wise decision” for the council to postpone adopting the master plan. “There are lots of things that are wrong with it [the master plan] and they haven’t resolved the existing problems,” she said. “There are complaints from people about

low-flying aircrafts … the noise, the safety aspects. “There are all these types of things and nobody has sat down and had a real look at what we can build here.” Most of the airfield is zoned for public use, however a lot at 8 Rawson Place is zoned farming. The plan proposes the lot be amended to public use to accommodate new hangars, offices and a tourism hub. The council’s chief executive Margot Stork will facilitate a workshop for councillors and appropriate council officers to discuss the master plan in December.

Man charged after double fatality

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In this case, it’s a “strong message” for the current generations. Artist Julian Clavijo has teamed up with Gisborne Village Shopping Centre to paint a mural to symbolise the world’s climate situation. Clavijo said the mural, titled Global Warming, represented a “powerful image” in today’s society. “It depicts a little girl, symbolising the next young generation of the global society, and staring at a climate chaotic planet that we are going to hand over to them,” he said. “That is represented in the fairy lights. The fairy lights are all tangled and symbolising global warming as such. The next generation is looking at it and looking at us not doing what we should do as a global society. Not just the governments, not just the big countries, pretty much everyone. “She’s still smiling because it’s a strong message to say there is hope. It’s a powerful image that people can look at and be touched by the colours and the purity and innocence of the girl.” Clavijo said he was inspired to put brush to canvas by the recent student global climate strike in Melbourne. “It’s one of my most satisfying murals. Two loving grandparents killed in a car crash earlier this month have been remembered as “exceptional people with a zest for life”. Bruce and Lyn Anderson, farmers from Baynton in central Victoria, were driving near Melbourne Airport on Thursday, October 10, when their SUV and a Holden sedan collided about 3.20pm. Mr Anderson, 69, and Ms Anderson, 68, died at the scene on Sunbury Road in Bulla. The man driving the Holden was taken to hospital with injuries, emergency services said at the time. A 22-year-old man from Melton West was charged last Monday with two counts of culpable driving causing death. The Anderson family released a statement last week, describing the farming couple as keen travellers. “We are saddened by the loss of our beloved parents. “They were loving grandparents and exceptional people with a zest for life,” the family said. “They enjoyed travelling Australia and did many a mile in the outback and beyond. “This tragic accident will affect our family forever and we will miss them terribly.” So far this year, 221 people have died on Victoria’s roads, seven more than the total road toll for 2018. Dee’s dream animal stay By Jessica Micallef From a small town near Liverpool, to a big country farm in Lancefield, Dee Tully-Bucknell is living her dream. When Ms Tully-Bucknell first came across animal sanctuary farm Edgar’s Mission on her iPad halfway across the globe in a town called Eastham, she knew she had to one day make a special trip to Australia. “I’ve always been passionate about animal welfare, I’ve always loved animals,” she said. “It was just fabulous to see all the different animals. “I said to my husband, ‘when we do go to Australia, it would be for my 60th [birthday] … but I’d like to go visit Edgar’s Mission.’ He caught me on the iPad looking at where it was.” Before she knew it, her husband surprised her with a plane ticket to Melbourne. “He knows how passionate I am about animals,” Ms Tully-Bucknell said. “It was just amazing and really thoughtful of him. It’s just the best birthday present I could ever have.” Since arriving at Edgar’s Mission earlier this month, Ms Tully-Bucknell has been volunteering her time looking after animals and living out her dream. “Every day when I drive up to those gates, I get the butterflies because it’s such a caring, kind place,” she said. “Everyone has been so nice. You can’t put into words how welcome they make you feel. It’s like a piece of heaven on earth. It really is a sanctuary. “I do love pigs. If I had to take one home I think it would be Elvis Pigsley.” Ms Tully-Bucknell said she was looking forward to her husband meeting her in Melbourne, before making their way to New South Wales and Fiji.

EPA fines skip bin owner A Kyneton woman has been fined almost $2000 for dumping a large amount of industrial waste at a Kyneton property. In August, Environment Protection Authority (EPA) officers attended a farm property to investigate a report of dumping. EPA north west regional manager Scott Pigdon said officers found a large quantity of industrial waste including timber, cement sheeting, metal, wire, plastics and general household waste. “Investigations confirmed the waste was dumped by a woman operating a skip bin business,” he said. “Industrial waste can contain chemicals and metals which can lead into the ground which is why it’s so important to take it to an appropriately licensed site. “Anyone operating a skip bin business should be well aware of the environmental regulations for the industry and should have systems, processes and controls in place to dispose of material in the correct manner.” The woman was also ordered to clean up the waste. “As well as the $1983 fine, the woman has been left with a clean-up bill,” Mr Pigdon said. “Everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment. Community reports are vital to EPA’s ability to prevent harm from waste and hold polluters to account.” Report pollution to EPA’s 24-hour hotline 1300 372 842.

Water warning for Campaspe By Jessica Micallef Coliban Water has warned that “unfavourable weather conditions” could force non-compliant water releases into the Campaspe River. The water company said heavy rain could force it to breach its licence and illegally release water into the river from the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant, which it manages. Managing director Damian Wells said protecting the Campaspe River was a priority. “We acknowledge that we must do better

to meet environmental regulations and community expectations and we will do better,” he said. “Our plant is currently compliant with its Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) licence conditions. We have taken some really important steps to invest in proper improvements but these infrastructure works will take time to complete.” Earlier this month, Coliban Water announced plans to improve waste and domestic treatment processes at the Kyneton

Water Reclamation Plant. Additional aerators will be installed in lagoons to ensure the water released from the plant is within the EPA’s licence conditions. The installation of extra aerators form part of a three phase project in a bid to protect the Campaspe River. “Until these works are completed, the risk of non-compliant water releases remains,” Mr Wells said. “We made a commitment to keep the community informed on any issues and give advance warning of potential non-compliant releases.”

In June, Coliban Water was forced to undertake a daily emergency discharge of class C recycling water from the Kyneton Reclamation Plant into the Campaspe River. Coliban Water project director Tony Kelly said the project will help ensure water released from the plant is keeping within the EPA’s Victoria standard. “Our plant has struggled to store the treated water it produces when there isn’t a demand for irrigation water or sufficient flows to release water to the Campaspe River,” he said.

Dancers off to Dublin Paige and Ciana are ready to take their Irish dancing talents to Dublin. The dancers, aged 13 and 15 respectively, will compete at the World Irish Dance Championships in Dublin next year. The girls, part of the Pacific Irish Dance School in Sunbury, recently attended the Australian Irish Dancing Championships in Canberra where they qualified for the world championships. The girls competed against 1500 dancers in Canberra. Their dance stuido friends Olivia, Anika and Erin also competed. Dance teacher Charmayne Dulley said she was proud of her students for reaching an international level. “It’s ecstatic,” she said. “It’s a lot of hard work over the summer in preparation and they will dance in sections that have over 200 competitors that have gone through a similar process in their own countries to qualify.

“To have an opportunity to even compete is just super exciting.” Ms Dulley said her students would be busily perfecting their techniques in the lead-up to the championships in Dublin in April. “They train here four days a week with myself and my two colleagues,” she said. “They also practise at home themselves, so it’s similar to training like an athlete would for any national event. “They are super excited to attend. It’s something that some dancers only get to once, some never get to the event, so any opportunity to compete is really exciting.” Jessica Micallef

Sunbury, your Airbnb destination By Jessica Micallef Sunbury has been listed as one of the top places in the world for an Airbnb stay. According to Airbnb, the suburb recorded a 356 per cent year-on-year booking increase between 2018 and 2019. Sunbury ranked fourth internationally, beating the likes of Romania, Vanuatu, Tokyo and Cape Canaveral in Florida. Milwaukee in Wisconsin took out the top spot. Sunbury resident Helen Cannon has been advertising her home on Airbnb for a year.

“I’m booked out most nights of the month,” she said. “Some months are completely booked out. It’s been fairly constant. Winter is a little bit quieter but spring and autumn are particularly busy. “We have a room that has independent access. It has French doors that open to a pergola. People have undercover parking. “People can come and go … whenever they please.” Ms Cannon said people stay at her Airbnb property for many different occasions.

to the city. “I get a lot of people who come for weddings and engagement parties as well. Sunbury is a gateway to the Macedon Ranges. It’s close to Macedon and Gisborne, Woodend and Hanging Rock.” Ms Cannon said she was shocked Sunbury made the global rankings. “I think it’s because we don’t have a lot of motels and Airbnbs are an affordable alternative to that,” she said. “I was very surprised, although seeing how busy I am I can understand.”

Art support for wildlife Gisborne wildlife artist Lesley Rosochodski is using her creative talents to help orphaned and injured wildlife. Rosochodski has teamed up with fellow artists Lisa Wilkinson and Kaye Taylor-Law to create an exhibition titled Nature … Wild, depicting rescued and orphaned animals. Rosochodski said the artists hope to raise more than $500 for Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network and Five Freedoms Animal Rescue through the sale of their artwork at the exhibition. “The heartbreaking sight of dead kangaroos along the roads made me determined to try and help wildlife rescue in the best way I could, which is through art,” she said. “After meeting Helen and Manfred [Zabinskas] at Five Freedoms, I was overawed by their courage in the face of such sadness. I realised they needed all the support they could get because public support is vital to wildlife

rescuers. This is how our exhibition was born.” Mr Zabinskas, owner of Five Freedoms Animal Rescue, said he was grateful for the support from the artists. “Wildlife rescue organisations receive no hands-on government funding,” he said. “It costs $500 a week to run our shelter and we are unfunded but for the generosity of donors. Over 40,000 calls were logged at Wildlife Victoria last year. This shows the overwhelming number of animals attended by unfunded rescue organisations, however we are meeting a desperate need and we can’t turn our backs.” The exhibition opens on Saturday, November 2 at B-MAC Gallery, 46/176 Main Street, Bacchus March from 10.30am. MY PLACE What started as a homeschool project when she was eight years-old has turned into Madelaine Scott’s pride and joy. She talks to Jessica Micallef about her business Madelaine’s Eggs.

What are you passionate about? I am passionate about sustainable agriculture, growing a vegie garden and now as I am a mother of two, I am concerned and passionate about fixing our environment for our kids. How did your business Madelaine’s Eggs come about? Madelaine’s Eggs started when I was eight years-old as a homeschool project. My parents … loaned me just a few dollars for some hens so I could learn responsibility caring for them, maths from selling the eggs, literacy and communication. Before no time I had paid my parents back and had an organic egg business in my little hands. Besides that initial investment I haven’t taken a loan or got into debt for my business, but have used other methods of raising funds such as crowdfunding. What do you enjoy most about running your own business? The best part is being in control of every stage of the production. So I know with complete

certainty it is chemical and cruelty free. I know that it regenerates the soil and that my chickens are happy and healthy and I even know some of the families who eat my eggs. What do you pride your business on? I like being 100 per cent transparent and being as organic as you can get. I’m proud of my eggs, they taste amazing and that is not just me saying this. I have many chefs who say my eggs are the best they have ever used. What are the challenges that you come across? My biggest challenge at the moment is the deceptive marketing by other egg farms who use the word organic but who are not certified, or are only certified for hay. Consumers who are educated know to look for the NASAA or ACO logo on the packaging itself but most consumers don’t understand this and are lured in by the lower prices not realising they are barely better than normal generic free range eggs. Being certified organic for poultry, my birds are raised on certified organic feed and pasture from day one and I’m highly accountable to an independent external authority. I’m audited annually and have to provide full documentation for everything. (Damjan Janevski)

What is your connection to the Macedon Ranges? The Macedon Ranges is my home. I have lived my whole life here. It’s where I started Madelaine’s Eggs and where I still run the business on our family farm. I also have a farm gate stall run on an honesty system for the local Sunbury and Macedon Ranges community to buy eggs from.

What would people be most surprised to know about you? I was allergic to eggs until I was about 16 years-old, but now I’m totally fine. I eat three eggs a day.

General manager Andrea says they feel blessed to receive such support, much of which has been there from the beginning. “We love to see our customers return again and again,” Andrea says. “It reinforces the confidence we have that we provide customer service and technical expertise at a high level, both of which are our consistent focus.” The Macedon Ranges’ largest independent European vehicle workshop provides diagnostics and repairs, as well as servicing on cars and SUVs. Clutch and brake replacements, timing belt and chain replacements, and professional wheel alignments, along with classic car maintenance and mechanical restorations are all part of what The Garage offers its valued customers. Adrian, who has 30 years’ experience as an automotive technician, and Andrea with her seven years’ former work with Holden, have seen the business expand rapidly. It now employs a team of 10 and plans are afoot to continue developing new services. “We employ a friendly, highly skilled team of

technicians, factory-trained across a wide range of brands including Mercedes-Benz, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Citroen and Mitsubishi,” continues Andrea. “We’re also committed to skilling the technicians of the future and currently have two apprentices on board. “Looking ahead, we hope to continue training future technicians. We’re constantly investing in new technology to ensure we stay abreast of the needs of modern vehicles. This includes future investment in the tooling required to maintain driver-assistance technologies, such as cameras and radars, as well as training our team to support hybrid and electric vehicle servicing.” Andrea and Adrian encourage customers to prepare for travel in the upcoming holiday season by having their vehicles serviced and in tip-top condition to ensure optimum safe driving on busy and potentially unfamiliar roads.

SPORT St Kilda swoops on young Cannons star in AFLW draft

Calder Cannons’ Georgia Patrikios was lost for words after realising her AFLW dream on Tuesday morning. The Cannons’ captain and star midfielder entered the AFLW draft as one of three players spoken about as the possible number one draft pick. Northern Knights’ Gabby Newton and Geelong Falcons’ Lucy McEvoy were the other two players seen to be in contention for the first pick. Newton was taken at pick one by the Western Bulldogs, with McEvoy taken at pick two by Carlton. Interstate teams held the next two picks, leaving St Kilda as the next Victorian pick at fifth. It had no hesitation in taking Patrikios, who has been a star of underage football for a number of years. The 18-year-old said she had no idea what was going to happen when she arrived at the draft.

“It’s unreal, I don’t have the words to describe it really,” she said. “I literally found out on the day. Gabby and Lucy have had amazing seasons and are amazing players and I’m happy for them too.” Even though she was one of the three top talents, Patrikios still wasn’t sure if the Saints would take her. “I spoke to them at the academy camps and had an interview and had a house interview a couple of days ago.” Patrikios, who was named the most valuable player at the national championships earlier this year, has been a gun midfielder throughout her junior career. She finished runners-up in the Cannons’ best and fairest this year as she led the side to a grand final. Later, she played five games with Essendon in the VFLW, averaging 19 disposals and five tackles per game. As well as a chance to be part of St Kilda’s first team, the Coburg player has the honour of

Tigers claim first points By Tara Murray Kyneton Tigers opened their account with an important win against the Bacchus Marsh Lions in the Country Basketball League north-west competition. Facing the Lions for the first time, the Tigers knew they needed to be in the game from the start. While they trailed early, scores were level at quarter-time. The Tigers raised the ante in the second quarter and led by 13 points at half-time. An attacking Lions side reduced the margin to eight points at the last break. The Tigers held their nerve late to win, 81-73. Tigers coach Ash Clark said it was good to get some reward for effort. He said while they had never played the Lions, they knew many of the players through the Big V competition. “It’s definitely good to get the win,” he said. “We focused on a good start as we knew it was important. “The first two games we’ve let them get away easily and couldn’t catch them. “We were able to get the good start.” Clark said the key was that everyone stood up when needed. “All the players did their bit and rotated through. The blokes coming on really put in and made an impact. “We don’t have a team of superstars. We need contributions from everyone and everyone contributed.” Carson McSweeney was the standout for the Tigers, coming off the bench. He top scored with 17 points. Clark said McSweeney provided points when they really needed it. Matt Bourke (14 points), Matt Quinn and Louis Bongiovanni (13 points each) also scored double figures. Clark said they were hoping the win would give them some confidence heading into the next part of the season. The Tigers have been up and down in their two completed seasons to date. “We’ve been focusing on the effort and energy and hopefully we’ll get some results,” Clark said. “We’re still yet to gel properly, but we started to do that last night.” The Tigers have a similar line-up to the past two years but Clark said they had more depth with a couple of key additions. Mangan, who played in the Tigers’ first season, returns to the line-up. Iggy Spiller, who spent time in America at college, made his debut for the Tigers at the weekend and scored eight points.

Gellibrand got the job done, finishing 5-113 off just over 24 overs. Jay King and Jason McGowan took two wickets each for Sunbury. The Roar has one win from its first three matches.

Lancefield got its second win of the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association division 2 season. Facing an in-form Aberfeldie side, the Tigers were able to restrict them to 4-140 off its overs. It was all single wicket takers for the Tigers. The Tigers got off to a strong start through their opening partnership and were able to chase down the runs, finishing 5-151.

For a second straight week, Gisborne is the only team to come away with a win in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. With rain playing havoc across the competition, three of the four games ended in draws, while Gisborne beat Riddell in the other game. The Bombers made 109, before Gisborne made the runs with ease, finishing 0-114. Gisborne is undefeated, and sits six points clear on top of the ladder.

Lancefield continued its good start to the Central Highlands Bowls Division top grade season. On Saturday, Lancefield beat Kyneton Gold, 125 (18)-63 (0). John Holmes and Peter Linehan’s rinks had the big wins, winning by 24 and 28 shots respectively. Lancefield sits atop the table on 52 points, four points clear of Gisborne. It was a thriller for Gisborne on Saturday, beating Romsey, 94 (14)-89 (4).

MCC ends Sunbury’s unbeaten pennant run

Sunbury suffered its first loss of the Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1 season. In an early top-of-the-table clash with MCC, Sunbury had to battle not only the opposition, but the elements. The teams were on and off the greens because of the rain but were able to play out the game. MCC took the win 81 (16)-65 (2). Carla Krizanic was the only winning skip for Sunbury, winning 18-16. Todd Trewarne’s rink lost 20-17. Mark Cowan, in his return to the side, lost 22-14. Jay Bye-Norris, in his first game for Sunbury, lost 23-16. Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was always going to be tough heading to Hawthorn. “They were unbeaten as well and it’s always tough playing them,” he said. “We lost by three shots, seven shots and eight shots, so it was pretty close all day in all the rinks. It’s good to get some tough games out of

the way early.” Glennon said there were no standouts for Sunbury in the loss and everyone was a bit demoralised by the loss once they returned to the club. He said the addition of Bye-Norris was a handy one for the side heading forward. Bye-Norris represented Victoria in the singles at the Australian Championships last year. “Jay comes from Essendon and played the first couple of games this year in Premier League and played in premier division the last couple of years. “He’s played for Victoria and only came to our club this week. “He’s friends with the Trewarne family, which I think was the lure to play at Sunbury.” Sunbury sits in second spot, 15 points behind MCC which is the only undefeated team left. This week Sunbury faces Whittlesea (2).

Early wickets prove costly for Cats

By Tara Murray East Sunbury continued its hot start to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield. The Thunder is proving to be the team to beat early in the season and has yet to be troubled in their three completed matches. The only thing stopping them from a perfect season so far was a washout in round two, in which they settled for a draw. On Saturday, the Thunder accounted for the Sunbury Kangaroos. The Kangaroos started well and got to 0-67 before the Thunder started to hold them up. The Kangaroos went on to make 6-132 from their 40 overs. Skipper Corey Woolley top scored with 51 at the top of the order. Thunder skipper Lance Watts said they had aimed to bowl first, knowing what inclement weather could be coming. He said that was the best way to control the game. The bowlers have done the job on each occasion for the Thunder, restricting the opposition to low totals. “They are bowling well in partnerships,” Watts said. “Just the way they’ve gone about it, they are doing the things I’ve asked of them. “They are bowling in the right areas and not just bowling quickly. “I’ve only used my five main bowlers.” On Saturday, Steve Grey took three wickets, to take his season total to six. The Thunder innings didn’t get off to the best start with Grey falling for five. From there Watts and Shannon McDorman took control, as the Thunder stormed home to 1-137 with seven overs remaining. Watts finished with an unbeaten 80, while McDorman made his first half century of the season, finishing 52 not out. Watts said having some experience at the top of the order meant they could set a good base. “It’s part of the reason they got me and Steve to the club,” he said. “To just help manage run chases and the way we’ve been doing it has been good. “It’s a bit unfortunate others haven’t had to bat, but it’s good at the same time.” Nathan Anderson took the wicket for the Kangaroos. The win has the Thunder sitting on top of the ladder. Watts said they were looking forward to getting into the two-day format in a couple of weeks. “I think we will play better cricket in the two-dayers,” he said. “I was hoping to pinch a couple of wins in the one-dayers that would help with the two-dayers.” Watts said they would be disappointed if they didn’t make finals this year. In other bowling news, Sunbury got its first win in more than 12 months in the RSL Bowling Association competition. Held on Friday mornings in Essendon, Sunbury beat East Keilor by 20 shots. Mark Cowan helped the Victorian over-60 men’s team to silver at the national championships last week. The Victorian men’s team won five of its seven matches, to finish behind New South Wales. Overall, Victoria came away with bronze Sophie Kurzman won bronze as part of the Victorian triples team at the 2019 Australian Under-18 Championships.

Macedon has made itself at home in the Johnstone Shield in the Gisborne District Cricket Association. After winning the Jensen Shield last season and earning promotion, the Cats have started the season with two wins from their first four matches. Cats captain Daniel Trotta said the competition this year didn’t feel too different from last year. “When we have a full team together, we can compete with anyone,” he said. “It’s not too different from last season. Our side has changed a little bit though. “We’ve had a few players unavailable, but the same thing happened last year. “Hopefully we’ll come back and hit some form at the back end of the season.” Trotta, who has captained the side on and off the past few years, has taken over the captaincy with Craig Pender out with a severe back injury. Chris Axton is also out, meaning the Cats have a bit younger side this season. Trotta said it was good to see what the next generation can do. “We’ve been unlucky with injury,” he said. “Craig will be out of action for while. Chris is another one, who is one of our better players. “This week we had a few out with work and races. It’s given us the chance to play some kids. “Zac Waddington was good on the weekend with the bat and ball. Sam Brown took five wickets in the twos. “It’s good to see the future of the club.” Trotta said the likes of Ollie Clough and the Doyle brothers could be among those to step up and take the load off some of the older players this season. On Saturday, an undermanned Cats lost to Wallan. Wallan made 9-192 from its overs. The Cats finished 9-103 with just two players scoring double figures. “We were pretty confident that we could get the runs, it’s a quick outfield,” Trotta said. “[But] We lost a few early wickets, including myself for not many, left too much for the kids.” Patrick Doyle top scored with 36.
