Beauty is in the beer

Peter Kakol loves a beer. He loves it so much he’s made a career out of it, and is now a finalist in a nationwide search for the best home brewer in Australia. The Diggers Rest man has been brewing his own beer for 25 years, eventually opening up a store in Sunbury to brew and sell home brew products. He was recently named a Victorian finalist in the Coopers Brewery ‘Master of the Brewniverse’ competition for his Sunbury Festival Ale. He said he enjoyed the variety and experimentation that comes with the brewing process. “Initially it started as a way of saving some money, and I liked the hobby so much it eventually became my business,” Mr Kakol said. “I enjoy playing with the flavours, and I don’t really have a favourite, just a good all-round beer. “Everyone is into IPA’s (Indian Pale Ale) these days, they’re a creamier, richer beer so they’re very nice and very popular.” Mr Kakol said the Sunbury Festival Ale came about by adding extra hops and trying new flavours. He said it was nice to get some wider recognition for his passion. “It took about 12 months to get the flavours right on that one,” he said. The national finals to crown Australia’s best home brew will be held in December.

Ashes museum move By Jessica Micallef Sunbury’s claim to fame as the birthplace of the Ashes will soon be set in stone. The Old Sunbury Courthouse will be transformed into an Ashes museum. During last Monday’s Hume council meeting, councillors gave the green light for the Sunbury Historical and Heritage Society to tell the story of the town’s cricket history in a dedicated Ashes museum. Sunbury claimed the title as the birthplace of the Ashes after an 1882 cricket match between
an English touring team and a local side at the famous Rupertswood manor. After the match, Rupertswood’s Lady Janet Clarke presented an urn containing the ashes of burnt bails to the English captain Ivo Bligh. The courthouse, at 43 Macedon Street, has been used as the Sunbury Visitor Information Centre for 26 years but the visitor centre will be relocated to the Hume Global Learning Centre in Sunbury upon its opening in December. The council undertook expressions of interests in March for interested groups and

organisations to propose their idea for use of the courthouse site. The council received seven applications. Sunbury Historical and Heritage Society president Peter Free said the museum would be a “great tourist attraction” for the town. “Sunbury’s the birthplace of The Ashes, which is very important to the cricket world and to the history of Sunbury,” he said. “We haven’t told the story, so with the museum, that’s what we hope to do. “A lot of people come to Sunbury and they want to know where the Ashes were played
and there’s nowhere to tell it.” Mr Free said he hoped to get the museum up and running by March next year. “We want to do it properly, we want to make sure that it’s going to be a really good exhibition,” he said. “It’ll have a lot of cricket memorabilia. It’s in the very beginning of the planning stage. We want to make sure we’ve done the displays and the stories correctly.” Hume mayor Carly Moore said the society’s proposal was a perfect fit for the Old Sunbury Courthouse.

Plan gives new life to Old Factory By Jessica Micallef A proposed 40 stall market and retail premises at The Old Factory in Woodend has residents divided. Macedon Ranges council received a planning permit application to transform The Old Factory at 30 Brooke Street, Woodend into a retail premises with a 40 stall market, restaurant and tavern, event and function space and offices. Applicant Human Habitats lodged the application with the council in June. The subject land is about 4000 square metres and is
zoned for industrial use. Woodend resident Russell Yardley said the application presented an “exciting potential development”. “I can’t see much downside,” he said. “Woodend really needs things like this. We’ve got to increase Woodend as a place to visit. “I look at this and it has a lot of good things about it. It’ll bring tourists into the area but it’ll also provide more work. “All the kids are always looking for jobs and this will provide plenty of jobs.” Woodend resident Maxwell Winchester said

He said the development would be better suited in the heart of the town. “Anywhere on High Street would be perfect,” he said. “When you put a large retail outlet out of the town centre, you take business out of the town centre so other businesses suffer. If you put it in the town centre, they share foot traffic. “There is no onsite parking and even their own application expects up to 250 cars on the streets. Salesian College will host its annual Rupertswood Harvest Festival this weekend, showcasing the work of agricultural students. Principal Mark Brockhus said he was looking forward to celebrating the festival with the Sunbury community. “Our college is extremely proud to organise a community event such as the Rupertswood Harvest,” he said. “It builds on the imagination of our students, shares a piece of our curriculum with others as well as help make our community more connected.” Mr Brockhus said there would be plenty of sights and attractions for festival-goers. “There will be lots of activities including free face-painting and games, free animal petting farm, free photographs, live entertainment, community market and student stalls, food trucks and more,” he said. “This year will once again showcase our sheep and cattle, one of the favourite elements of the harvest. “People travel far and wide to speak with our students and view some of the animals that have made such an impression at various shows, including the Royal Melbourne Show.” The Rupertswood Harvest Festival is at Salesian College Sunbury, 1 Macedon Street on Friday, October 25 between 4-8pm. The first glass-only recycling bins have been installed in the Macedon Ranges. The 240-litre bins were installed earlier this month in Gisborne, Lancefield, Malmsbury and Tylden. More will be installed in Macedon, Riddells Creek and Darraweit Guim in the coming weeks. Macedon Ranges council said it looked at public safety, distance to nearest transfer station, ease of access for the community and access for collection trucks when deciding where the glass bins would be installed. Residents can also drop off glass, free of charge, to transfer stations in Kyneton, Woodend and Romsey. As a last resort, glass can be placed in general rubbish bins. Following the collapse of recycling group SKM on July 25, the council’s kerbside recycling was stored at Four Season’s Waste facility in Kyneton. However the facility only had the capacity to store about 14 days of material and as of August 10 all recycling has been directed to landfill. The council identified a recycling company to process the area’s recycling, but it will not accept glass. About 650 Lancefield residents are currently taking part in a glass recycling trial. Those residents can continue to use their glass-only bins provided as part of the trials. The bins are collected monthly. Hume residents can have their say on how roads can be made safer for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists by taking part in a traffic study for the Sunbury West area. Suicide: We need to talk By Ewen McRae
“In terms of language, that really changes our ability to identify men’s own feelings and emotions. And that comes through with language like ‘you need to man up’ or ‘stiff upper lip’, ‘boys don’t cry’, all idioms that we could do without because they lead to men not wanting to talk about their feelings and emotions because they’re worried about being judged. “What I’m hoping through the work of the Primary Health Network and the online training, is to give people the opportunity to feel comfortable talking about suicide and being gatekeepers within the community to allow anybody to ask ‘Are you OK?’ and feel comfortable talking about it.” The increased visability of events like R U OK? Day, and the work of local Men’s Sheds and sporting clubs has put mental health in the spotlight in recent times, Mr Bentley-Ross said. “There’s a lot of work being done in this space,” he said. “There’s a lot of targeted work being done in areas of masculinity where a lot of men might not feel safe to have those conversations, and I think that’s an important step to help those that are statistically more at risk.” NWMPHN is offering a short online course – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) – designed to help people recognise if someone they know is at risk of suicide. When it comes to suicide rates in Australia, the stats don’t lie. Latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics have the suicide rate at 12.6 per 100,000 people, it also shows that men are three times more likely to take their own life than women. CoHealth community mental health worker Joseph Bentley-Ross said while increased awareness and education on the importance of good mental health was improving, there was always more that could be done.

“There are a host of reasons for why men are more likely to act on suicide, but there’s no doubt more men are accessing these mental health services, which is pleasing,” Mr Bentley-Ross said. “In terms of starting conversations with people, it’s about noticing if someone you know or someone you see in the community is more isolated and being comfortable to talk to them about that and see if they need some more help. “Starting a conversation can be very important.” The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) has identified Melton, Brimbank and the Macedon Ranges as having higher than average suicide rates and it’s calling on the community to help it take action through a short online course. mental health and hoped a greater focus would held promote change. “I think the language to talk around emotions and feelings might not come as readily or as easily to some men,” he said.

Spotlight on council complaints By Jessica Micallef Residents lodged 142 complaints against Macedon Ranges council in 2018, new data reveals. Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass surveyed all local governments to determine how councils handled complaints and how many complaints each council received in 2018. Macedon Ranges council corporate services director John Hausler said the council defined complaints as “relating to resident
dissatisfaction with a service provided by council”. “Residents can make a complaint by following the process outlined in council’s complaint handling policy, which is available on council’s website,” he said. “If a resident is not satisfied with the outcome, they can request an internal review.” In the report, the council said it aimed to acknowledge all complaints within 10 business days and resolve complaints within 28 days of it being received. The council does not regularly analyse complaints to identify
Paws, park and fur fun Dog lovers and their pooches can take a stroll through the Gisborne Botanical Gardens at this weekend’s Paws in the Park event. Organiser Kalinda McIntyre said the day has grown each year since its establishment in 2006. “The initial reasoning in setting the event up was to help promote and celebrate the human-animal bond within the Macedon Ranges and also to help promote and raise funds for the various not-for-profit organisations within the shire,” she said. “Over the past 14 years, the event has been organised by the Gisborne Veterinary Clinic’s staff, with many local businesses donating either their time or products for various aspects of the walk.” This year, funds raised from the event will go towards the Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network and Parklands Mobile Farm Animals. “Each of these foundations will have a stall
at the event,” Ms McIntyre said. “The ultimate goal … is to grow the day to incorporate many different aspects of the human-animal bond, create a platform for promoting best animal care and to help promote awareness of the plight of wildlife surrounding our communities.” The Paws in the Park event kicks off at 40 Robertson Street, Gisborne on Sunday, October 27. trends and areas for improvements. Mr Hausler said complaints made by residents are not made public. He said 0.31 per cent of Macedon Ranges population raised a complaint in 2018. Hume council reported 782 complaints during 2018, with communications, engagement and advocacy director Sue Haviland saying complaints most commonly related to barking dogs, excessive noise from neighbours and litter bins requiring emptying. “Council investigates all complaints with a view of identifying and resolving
any underlying problems to avoid the issue recurring,” Ms Haviland said. Ms Glass said many councils were understating the number of complaints they receive, raising concerns about how they deal with dissatisfaction from the community. “Far too many councils still adopt a narrow definition of complaint or interpret it narrowly in practice,” Ms Glass said. “Not only is it impossible to compare the councils, those who understate the level of public dissatisfaction may well be failing to deal with it.”

Plant project to improve water By Jessica Micallef Fencing and revegetation works are taking place along the Campaspe River and Post Office Creek, south of Kyneton. Coliban Water managing director Damian Wells said the works were part of the company’s $2.1 million Kyneton Offsets Project. Mr Wells said the project was developed to improve water quality along the Campaspe River. “We are committed to long-term catchment health and we have an important role in protecting river health for future generations while meeting the needs of our communities,” he said. Willow trees, blackberry, hawthorn and other weeds have been removed from about 13.5 kilometres of river frontage on 12 properties. About 20,000 native trees and shrubs will be planted in their place. Earlier this month, Coliban Water announced plans to improve waste and domestic treatment processes at the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant in a bid to protect the Campaspe River. Additional aerators will be installed in lagoons to ensure the water release from the plant is within the Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) licence conditions. The installation of extra aerators forms part of a three phase project. Phase one works are expected to be completed by March next year. Mr Wells said Coliban Water had listened to the community and was committed to delivering the Kyneton Offsets Project and upgrading the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant. Details: coliban.com.au

Wine and art are the perfect pairing at Hanging Rock Winery’s newest exhibition. About 15 sculptures have been installed throughout the winery’s grounds in preparation for this weekend’s opening of the Art in the Vines – Sculpture in Motion exhibition. Winery manager direct to consumer Shane Caruana said this year’s exhibition follows on from last year’s Art in the Vines – Sculpture Exhibition and Trail at the winery. “Our exhibition curator Malcolm Thomson has again secured an enviable line-up of artists to feature,” he said. “[It] will follow the same format as last year’s inaugural event, but this year’s focus is on kinetic sculpture – sculpture that relies on motion for its effect.” Winery managing director John Ellis said the exhibition would not disappoint. “The setting is outstanding, as is the calibre of artists,” he said A series of complimentary events, including a long lunch, will be a part of the exhibition’s program. Store owner Michelle Billings said she was thrilled with her achievement. “It’s really awesome, it explains why I am so tired,” she said. “It’s certainly something I didn’t expect. It’s the biggest reward and acknowledgement.”
Ms Billings has owned Sunbury’s only bookstore for a little more than two years. In that time, she has reached out to schools and provided books for children with learning disorders. “I also do a lot of school programs including dyslexia-friendly chapter books,” she said. “I have always believed there was a book for every kid and I have been out to … prove that. A lot of the local schools support me. The libraries buy their stock from me now. Hopefully I can do a lot more stuff with schools.” Ms Billings credited the award to her staff

MY PLACE Margaret Morgan is the Woodend Art Group secretary. She speaks with Jessica Micallef about her artworks and her role with the group.
My daughter lives in Lancefield and I have had solo and joint exhibitions at the MAD Gallery in Lancefield over the past 10 years. I am excited to have several oil and watercolour paintings hanging in the Old Railway Station in Lancefield. I have had paintings shown there over several years. I have painted Hanging Rock in silk paint, oil and watercolour over the years – some of these paintings have been purchased by overseas buyers. Turpin Falls is another great area to stretch the legs and drag out the easel. I love the emotive billabongs and you don’t have to drive too far to get away from it all and take in the serenity. What are you passionate about? I enjoy all mediums but am passionate about watercolours. The way the paint mixes on the paper, creating a translucent effect. The artist often does not have full control over the movement of the paint. This is particularly evident when painting on yupo, a plastic-like material. When my children were at kindergarten I took up oil painting, tutored by Ron Reynolds and Marion Bruere. My first masterpiece was a painting of Beethoven’s death mask. Ron would have a box of black and white photographs for us to select our subject matter from, resulting in an exciting night of tonal painting. The Sunday morning field trips to places like Pound Bend, Warrandyte were fun. I had two years of watercolour lessons from David K Taylor, and have been tutored by

Alvaro Castagnet, Amanda Hyatt and Joseph Zbukvic to name a few. I teach watercolour, oil and acrylic pouring. How long have you been a part of the Woodend Art Group – what is your role? This is testing the memory. I will say 10 years, and secretary for the past two, though I have handled a lot of advertising over the years, both print media and web based. Social media is good for promoting exhibitions, classes and workshops. What do you enjoy most about the group? The interaction with fellow artists. Where is your favourite place to eat in Sunbury and/or the Macedon Ranges? I tend to gravitate towards Colenso. I am disappointed that they had to relocate from Woodend to Kyneton. Glen Erin [in Lancefield] is a favourite. My daughter’s wedding reception was held there, following on from the service at St Mary’s in Woodend. The ambience of Glen Erin, along with the quality of the food and wine is most enjoyable. I have also exhibited there. What would people be most surprised to know about you? It always amazes people when I say that I bred and showed miniature poodles for many years, as my last three dogs have been rottweilers and a great dane mastiff.

“Why Sell” Today I want to tell you a “feel good story”. SPORT New Jets coach brings plenty of high level experience

The Sunbury Jets have turned to John White to lead them into next year’s Big V women’s state championship season. White, who has been coaching the Dandenong Rangers in the NBL1 and former SEABL competition, was announced as the Jets coach last week. White brings plenty of experience to the role, having also been an assistant coach in both the NBL and WNBL. He said the Sunbury coaching job was an opportunity that he was looking forward to. “There’s a really good culture down there and a great opportunity,” he said. “They have been a league leader in all aspects of the sport, from the obvious successes on-court to the continued growth behind the scenes. “Seeing what they have been doing, I want to
be a part of that.” White knows he has some big shoes to fill, with former coach Kennedy Kereama taking the side to three championships in his four years as coach. This year they claimed the minor premiership, before slipping up in the preliminary final. It was White’s friendship with Kereama that sparked his interest in joining the club. Kereama is continuing his role as the Jets’ coaching director. “I’ve got a pretty strong connection with Kennedy and we always spoke about working together again,” White said. “We were assistant coaches at Dandenong in the WNBL. “We struck up a good relationship and spoke about Sunbury in our discussions. Their success speaks for itself.”
It will be White’s first time coaching in the Big V competition, but he said he had a good idea of what to expect. He said he had been impressed with what he had seen early at Sunbury and was keen to continue to ensure that players through all age groups want to play at the club. “The calibre of senior players and up-and-coming talent is encouraging. My strength is the development side and there’s the opportunity to work with some really good talent. “I’ve already found that Sunbury do things differently with the pathway [than Dandenong] between juniors and seniors and there’s a lot of clarity.” Tara Murray
Dragons three from three By Tara Murray Gisborne was the big winner in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup on Saturday. With rain playing havoc across the grounds, only one match in the top grade was completed and Gisborne came away with the win against St Anthony’s. Dragons skipper Jarryd Vernon said in the past they were the ones that normally lucked out with the weather. “The others matches getting washed out is pretty handy for us,” he said. “It’s crucial, we are normally the ones who get washed out. There was a fair bit of rain around and we were coming on and off. “There was a stage out there, 20 overs into the St Anthony’s innings, it looked bad. “We thought one more downpour and that was going to be the end of the day, it didn’t come.” It was a strong performance for the Dragons with both the bat and the ball. The Dragons made 7-231. Vernon said that score in a one-dayer was always hard to chase down. “We started off a bit slow as we were missing both our openers. “We found another gear … in the last 20 overs. “It was a pretty reasonable score.” Vernon was the star, making 96. He said it was good to make runs after going out for a golden duck the week before, but he was more focused on getting the team in a good position. St Anthony’s batted out its overs, but fell short, finishing 8-162. Vernon said they set about trying to stop Saints skipper Cameron Clayton. Clayton finished 85 not out. “Cam is a good player,” Vernon said. “The plan was to get him off strike and try and get the others on strike. “It was really tough bowling conditions. The fast bowlers were bowling off four and five steps.” With wet ground making it hard for the fast bowlers, Vernon turned to his spinners and slower bowlers. Capping off a good day, Vernon finished with three wickets. The result has the Dragons sitting atop the ladder, with three wins from as many games. Vernon said they couldn’t have asked for a better start – they’ve already beaten two-time reigning premiers Bacchus Marsh and the highly rated Sunbury United. “We’ve got a lot of new guys come into the club,” he said. “They have gelled really well and to get three wins is positive for us. We’re looking forward to

Sunbury Softball Association will host the fourth round of the Softball Victoria Peta Edebone Cup later this month. Hosting a round of the tournament is massive for the small association, with the competition one of Softball Victoria’s biggest. The Peta Edebone Cup consists of four teams made up of the best female players from across the state. They play an eight round competition, with the top two teams to play off in the grand final in December. Sunbury secretary Cath Kelly said they were thrilled to get the opportunity to have a round at the club. “Being a small association and only having two diamonds, it makes it hard to host big events,” she said. “Softball Victoria approached us about hosting a round. “To be able to bring out elite players to Sunbury and to give young softballers the opportunity to meet these players is incredible.” Kelly said they didn’t often get the opportunity to host events like this, so they wanted to get as many people down watching as possible. There is a local connection to the cup, with Sunbury Softball Association’s Danielle Baxter part of the Black Storm team. Kelly said it was hard to get players selected in the teams, so it was massive for the club to have someone gain selection. Round four of the Peta Edebone Cup starts at 7pm on October 30 at the Sunbury diamond, which is located on Lancefield Road, Sunbury. Tara Murray

Rupertswood parts ways with premiership coach Rupertswood has surprisingly parted ways with premiership-winning netball coach Di McCormack. McCormack has been head coach at Rupertswood for the past seven years, leading the club’s netball program to 15 premierships in the Riddell District Netball League. This year, the club won three netball premierships, including breaking through for its first A-grade flag. McCormack, who wanted to coach on with the club, said she was disappointed by the decision. She had wanted to coach on for at least another year. “The club is looking in a different direction and looking at a different netball set-up,” she said. “When I think about it, we’ve won 15 premierships and I don’t think that many others would have won that many. “We played in four grand finals this year … I thought if we could have kept the group together we could have had more success.” McCormack said she loved her time at Rupertswood and was proud of what they
achieved in a short period of time. The A-grade premiership this year was a highlight for McCormack after so many close misses in finals. The other was the development of the program and seeing the players coming through. The under-19 team has won six premierships in a row and never lost a match. “We’ve got players who started in under-17s and have rolled up into A-grade,” she said. “We’ve got three players in the top 50 players for under-17s ahead of the Vic trials and two in the under-19s. “Some of these girls have played for us for a long time.” Sharks president Brad Pietromonaco said the club was looking to take a different direction next season. He said they expected that it would impact on results and that it wasn’t all about winning. “Di has been there for seven years,” he said. “We want to get some more local girls back into the teams. A lot of girls are missing out on opportunities with girls coming in from downtown.
“It’s something that has been on our mind the last couple of years. We’ve bitten the bullet and we know it’s going to hurt. “They won the A-grade premiership and it’s a chance to finish on a high.” Pietromonaco said that they expected to lose a big chunk of the netball playing group due to the decision. He said they would look at what they’ve done with the football program and build the program using locals. He said they had a strong junior program. The club will be advertising for netball coaches and a netball co-ordinator for next season. In other news, the Sharks are set to have a members vote on whether the club will make a possible move to the Essendon District Football League in 2021. Rain wrecks Burras’ quest

By Tara Murray Rain halted Diggers Rest Bulla’s quest for three straight wins in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. Having started the season in fine form, the Burras were keen to continue that against Sunbury United on Saturday. While the Burras played some good cricket, in the end they had to settle for a draw when the rain continued to fall. Burras playing coach Rasika Batepola said it was set up to be a cracker of a game before it was called off. “They had two of their best batters at the crease and we have a good bowling attack,” he said. “The ground was pretty quick and they had the extra pressure on them batting second. “We thought we had enough runs on the board.” The Burras were bowled out for 174 with two balls remaining. Batepola said they could quite easily have had another 30 or 40 runs on the board. The Burras lost a number of wickets in the last 10 overs as they were looking to push the run rate. Upul Fernando top scored with 57, while Sumanjan Fernando made 44. With the rain normally missing Diggers Rest, Batepola said he thought they would be able to finish the game but it wasn’t to be, with United finishing 2-36. Despite the draw, Batepola said he was still happy with how they performed. He said the work they had done over the past couple of years was starting to show through. “To have won would have been good, but we’re still unbeaten,” he said. “We’ve been playing well together as a team and not playing as individuals. “The last couple of years we’ve gained an understanding of each other and this year things have settled down. We’re going hard at it.” Batepola said they were benefiting from the growth in Diggers Rest, with a number of new residents coming to the club. “In five years’ time the club is going to be big.” Meanwhile, if everything goes to plan, the Burras will have some big guests at training on October 31. Batepola said he was hoping some members of the Sri Lankan T20 team will be in attendance at the club on that night. He said the players themselves were keen to come down, but it would depend on other factors. Anyone is welcome on the night and to talk

Sunbury remains undefeated in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 2. Playing at home, Sunbury had a convincing win, beating Richmond Union, 93 (18)-61 (32). Todd Trewarne’s rink had the big win, winning 30-13. Dylan Filuk’s rink won 21-12, while Carla Krizanic’s won 23-22. Lee Wesley, who was standing in for Mark Cowan who is away with the Victorian over 60s team, won 21-12. It was a good day for Sunbury with five of its six teams having wins.

Fielding a side for the first time, the Sunbury Roar started with a win in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Women’s competition. Facing Sydenham-Hillside, the Roar bowled them out for 64. Amber Andrews, Hannah Smajila and Kameka Barnes took two wickets each. The Roar chased down the runs with ease, finishing 1-79 off 11 overs. Shelley Ellis finished 26 not out.

Kyneton Tigers still have not beaten the Bendigo Braves since joining the Country Basketball League. The two sides faced off on Saturday night in the north-west competition, with the Braves winning 59-48. Jess Mangan top scored for the Tigers with 14 points.
