Riddells Creek uproar By Jessica Micallef Riddells Creek residents are rallying against a huge housing development, claiming it would be a “disaster” for the town. The plan proposes 1290 lots on a 131 hectare site, with average lot sizes of 476 square metres on Amess Road, Riddells Creek. The site is currently zoned for urban growth. The plan also proposes open park spaces, drainage reserves and a community facility. Developer Sector Advantage is preparing the precinct structure plan for Amess Road in partnership with the council. But the plans have come under fire by Riddells Creek residents who have created a Facebook group called Save Riddells Creek.

Group creator and Amess Road resident Helen Barrett said the group was created to provide residents with more information on the proposed plan. Since its establishment last month, the group has more than 400 members. Ms Barrett said she was not happy with the plan, labelling it a “disaster”. “I live exactly opposite the site and I’ve spoken to a lot of people in the town. The major concern is the size of the blocks,” she said. “The majority of the blocks are 476 square metres. I’m opposite it and I’m on 2.5 acres. That’s a big upset for the whole community because that’s urban size and we’re rural. They’re going to double the size of Riddells Creek.” Ms Barrett said Riddells Creek would not cope with the population that would come with the proposed plan. “As it is, we’ve got no footpath, the roads are rubbish and the train station carparking is already full,” she said. “We just don’t have the infrastructure, the health, the roads, the parking, any of the services really. Our sporting facilities are lacking. It would be a disaster. “They want 1290 blocks over there … the sheer size of it is massive. What the people are wanting is more moderate, reasonable development – something that we could cope with.” Macedon Ranges council undertook public consultation for four weeks in September. A haunting we will go The Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House will be transformed into a spooky, kooky place of fun later this month. Children are invited to dress up in creepy and frightening costumes for the Spooktacular Halloween Party. Event organiser Nicole Garbutt said she was looking forward to the American tradition becoming immortalised in town. “Riddells Creek has really embraced Halloween and each year more children get dressed up and go trick-or-treating,” she said. “We thought we would offer a meet-up point for those who celebrate Halloween to catch up and socialise before heading out to trick-or-treat.” Partygoers can walk through a hair-raising haunted house, pat the cuddly giant spiders, shake hands with a skeleton, and visit the gruesome graveyard. Commuter crush as trains become overcrowded Brimbank commuters are increasingly squeezing onto overcrowded trains during peak times, new Department of Transport data reveals. The department’s annual passenger load survey reveals that 10.6 per cent of Sunbury line passengers are travelling on overcrowded trains during the afternoon peak. The line has 25 afternoon peak services. In 2018, no afternoon services were found to be overcrowded. The survey found that the Sunbury line was

excluded from the count. A train is considered to be overcrowded if it is carrying more than 900 passengers. The data comes as the state government announced works to allow more trains to run on the Sunbury line will begin next month. A $534 million construction blitz, which is part of the Metro Tunnel project, will enable overhead power upgrades to be completed between Sunbury and South Kensington. The works will also include signaling power upgrades at Calder Park sidings.

Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the upgrades would build on work already underway to extend platforms and build new stabling at stations along the Sunbury line. “These upgrades will pave the way for new high-capacity trains to run along the Sunbury line and through the Metro Tunnel – providing more regular, reliable and comfortable services for passengers on this line,” she said. Green light for recycling

Melbourne’s third most crowded train line in the afternoon, behind the Craigieburn line and Dandenong corridor. According to the survey, 11.9 per cent of morning peak passengers on the Sunbury line are travelling on overcrowded trains. There are 21 morning peak services on the line. The survey, which was carried out over 12 weekdays from May 6-23 between 6.30amnoon and 2-7pm, measured passenger numbers across the rail network. Services that are cancelled or altered are

There is always hope An outreach team based at Sunshine hospital is giving hope to people at risk of suicide. The Hospital Outreach Post-suicidal Engagement (HOPE) team provides practical support and follow-up for people leaving hospital after a suicide attempt, their families, friends and carers. Mid West Area Mental Health Service psychologist Alana Cross encouraged people who may be struggling to reach out for help. “I know that it can be a very difficult experience and it can be hard to reach for help, but we’ve had very promising results from our program,” Ms Cross said.

“When people do reach out … there is that help for them. It’s just one avenue of where people can access support and the help that they need at the time. “We feel really positive about our work.” Ms Cross said her role within the team was to understand a person’s suicide story. “We help people with a broad range of psychological interventions. Our aim is really around supporting people to understand … what has driven them to the point where they are really struggling. “Our program shows … how much change can happen even when people are going through their most difficult part of their life.” Ms Cross said the HOPE program was a

12-week program and primarily works with Brimbank and Melton residents. The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network has identified Melton, Brimbank and the Macedon Ranges as having higher than average suicide rates. The network is offering a short online course – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) – designed to help people recognise if someone they know is at risk of suicide. Hume’s recycling collections are no longer being dumped in landfill, with the council striking a deal to send the municipality’s recyclables to the former SKM plant at Laverton North. Hume council announced last week that collections from yellow recycling bins would return to normal from October 8. The municipality’s kerbside recycling collections have been going to landfill for the past two months following the shutdown of SKM Recycling. Hume mayor Carly Moore thanked residents for their patience and willingness to work together to reduce waste over the past two months. “It was pleasing to see so many people recycle through alternative options like our pop-up recycling station and the resource recovery centres.” Cr Moore said the pop-up recycling station would continue for the time being. The next recycling session is on Sunday, October 20. The return of Hume’s recycling collections comes as waste company Cleanaway announced it had bought SKM. Cleanaway chief executive Vik Bansal said the company expected to “gradually restore” recycling operations in the coming months to provide councils with a “quality, sustainable solution for their recycling”. To help residents avoid contaminating their recycling bins, Hume council has released a recycling guide. Paper, cardboard, milk cartons, glass bottles and jars, aluminium cans, steel cans and rigid and semi-rigid plastics numbers 1-7 can all be placed in recycling bins. Tetra Paks such as juice boxes and UHT milk cartons, lids from glass bottles and jars, and aerosols cannot be recycled.

Festival of food and fun By Jessica Micallef You can help Carlsruhe CFA build a better station. The CFA will host its annual wine and food festival next month, with all funds raised going toward a new station. Firefighter Greg Clinnick said there would be something for everyone on the day. “There will be … a jumping castle, camel rides, face-painting, plaster-cast painting and farm animal petting for the kids,” he said.

“From 12.30pm to 2.30pm there will be free balloon art for the kids. Eating and drinking will be catered for with a barbecue, food stalls, popcorn and fairy floss, local wineries, beer brewers, a cidery and gin distillers all on site.” The day will also include a classic car display and several vintage tractors. “The funds raised from the festival will allow the brigade to upgrade the station to better protect their local and nearby communities,” Mr Clinnick said. In August, land was purchased on Cobb and

Co Road for a new CFA station to be built. The state government has previously provided $600,000 funding to the project. Further funds were allocated in the 2019-20 state budget. The station is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. The Carlsruhe CFA Wine and Food Festival is on Sunday, November 3 between 11am-5pm at Farmer Darryl’s Farm, 97 Trio Road, Kyneton. Sunbury paramedics are calling on residents to download the GoodSAM app as part of a campaign to encourage the community to step in and help someone suffering a cardiac arrest. GoodSAM is an app that alerts qualified first-aid personnel when someone nearby is in cardiac arrest. The app is also linked to triple-0. Local paramedics will also be hosting CPR workshops to equip people with first-aid training. Ambulance Victoria Sunbury team manager Chris Collard said CPR can double a person’s chance of survival after cardiac arrest. “Minutes matter in cardiac arrest and the sooner a person receives CPR and the application of a defibrillator, the better their chances of survival,” he said. “Bystanders are the critical first link in the chain of survival and can help keep patients alive before our highly-trained paramedics arrive.” Mr Collard said people with first-aid training can help save lives by downloading the GoodSAM app. “We recently expanded GoodSAM, so that any adult with first-aid training can be alerted to a nearby cardiac arrest,” he said. Sunbury Primary School pupils and staff will have 150 reasons to celebrate at the weekend. The school community will be commemorating 150 years of education in style with a vintage fair. Principal Amanda Busuttil said she was excited to be a part of the school’s milestone. “It’s an incredible school on any given day,” she said. “To be leading this community on that day, celebrating 150 years in education is very special and certainly a highlight for me in this role. “The school’s got quite a significant history and this is just another part of its history that hopefully we’re going to be able to share with present students and past families.” Ms Busuttil said the fair was about bringing

past and present school families together for a fun-filled day. “There’ll be lots of carnival rides and entertainment, there’s an interactive wildlife show and a petting zoo,” she said. “There’ll be arts and crafts, we’ll have in excess of 20 food trucks here pony rides [and] an official ceremony. “We’ve invited past members from the school staff to play a significant part in the official opening. We’re really looking forward to seeing this place a real hive of activity on that day. .” The fair is on Saturday, October 19 at Sunbury Primary School, The Heights, between 4-9pm. Festival ready to light up Sunbury By Jessica Micallef Sunbury will light up this weekend for the town’s very first Diwali festival. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is a five-day celebration commemorated by Hindus all over the world. The Multicultural Resources Hub, a not-for-profit organisation that connects new migrants in Australia to existing communities, will be hosting the Sunbury festival. Hub advisor Shammi Parekh said she was looking forward to celebrating her culture in

her hometown. “I’ve lived in Sunbury for 30 years now and I feel that there hasn’t been an event like a Diwali Festival,” she said. “A lot of people do know about it, it’s been celebrated in schools, in kindergartens. People decorate their houses with lights, they make nice sweets [and] they have family and friends over.” The festival will be traditional Indian cuisine, a sari wrapping workshop, dances and performances and the opportunity for visitors to be inked with a beautiful henna tattoo.

Ms Parekh said up to 600 people are expected to attend the festival. She has encouraged people of all nationalities to embrace the celebrations. “We wanted it to be a multicultural event celebrating Diwali,” she said. “It’s not only based on the Indian community. We have got the Filipino community involved, we’ve got the Sri Lankan community involved and we have Fijian communities involved.” The Sunbury Diwali festival is on Sunday, October 20, at Goonawarra Golf Club, 2 Francis Boulevard, Sunbury between 2-8pm. Skate till you drop Get your skates on at the new and improved Sunbury skate park. Hume mayor Carly Moore officially opened the skate park earlier this month. The $500,000 upgrade began in May and was funded by Hume council. “The original skate park was constructed in 2002 and proved to be a very popular recreational and competitive skate, scooter and BMX-riding facility,” Cr Moore said. “The skate park has been expanded by approximately 390 square metres. This has created space for a range of new elements and obstacles to inspire and challenge skate, scooter and BMX enthusiasts across all levels. “The new design of the park has focused on ensuring the park caters for beginner, intermediate and advanced users. “Along with the new aspects of the park, popular original elements have also been repaired and will continue to service the

Sunbury community well into the future.” Skaters can look forward to riding on a new quarter pipe, mogul, new rails, banks and barriers, a wave block and a hubba. “Community recreation facilities like this one are very important and help encourage an active lifestyle,” Cr Moore said. Sunbury’s showstopper By Jessica Micallef The Sunbury Agriculture Show put on a spectacular for the ages at the weekend. It was the 99th anniversary of the show and thousands of people gathered at Sunbury Recreation Reserve to take in all its wonders. Excited children got to pat furry and feathered animals at the animal farm, while thrillseekers hopped aboard the carnival rides. Show favourites such as the dog high jump and dog dash proved to be real crowd-pleasers. Show secretary Sandie Braun thanked the show’s team for putting on a magnificent event. “We have a very small committee who runs the show,” she said. “We’re all very dedicated and we have worked very hard to put on a good show. It’s a real team effort.”

Toasting 40 years, four legs and fur The Macedon Ranges Obedience Dog Club celebrated its 40th anniversary in style. Club president Ben Were said past and present club members and their dogs commemorated 40 years of business with a function at the club on Sunday. “It’s a great feat in itself because some clubs have not lasted that long and it’s great that we’ve been able to keep going for that period of time,” he said. Mr Were credited the club’s success over four decades to the many volunteers who have dedicated their time. “It’s not a one person effort, it’s a team effort,” he said. “We’ve got close to 20 volunteers that make the club tick. MY PLACE Graeme Stead has worked at 17 different Coles stores across his 43 year career. He is now at Coles Sunbury. He speaks to Jessica Micallef.

I have lived in Melton for 25 years. I have been a team member at Sunbury Coles supermarket for five years. What are you passionate about? For most of my career, I have spent my time working in the fresh foods department. This has driven and fuelled my passion for fresh foods. You’ve worked at Coles for more than four decades. Tell me about the journey to where you are now at Coles? I’ve had many different roles since I began my journey in 1975 as a casual team member. Since then, I’ve been employed on a full-time basis in a variety of roles – night stock filler, night duty manager, assistant store manager, co-store manager, department manager for dairy, fresh foods and lastly team leader. After 36 years of working in a management role, I decided it was time for a change and I stepped down into my current role in the fresh food department. I should also mention that I met my wife Marie at Coles and together we have nearly 80 years of service. In four decades, you must have seen a lot of change.

I have worked in 17 different Coles stores throughout Victoria. Over my career span I have seen a vast amount of changes, such as manual paper-based ordering systems to automated computer-based ordering. I believe technology plays a big part at Coles. There is always an improvement in a current system or an advanced new technologic method that will change the way we work. There is always something new just around the corner. What do you enjoy most about working at Coles? Over the years, I have met and worked with some amazing people. From those who have supported, guided and mentored me, to those who I have formed close relationships with. These people are what drive success within Coles. Our team at Sunbury is the backbone of the store. We are a family, which makes it enjoyable to come to work each and every day. What would people be most surprised to know about you? In my younger adult days, I was a car enthusiast who enjoyed working on and building performance cars. I spent many years drag racing at Calder Park [Raceway] and had many successes along my journey. Since then, I have found a new passion for hobby race cars of the smaller kind. Also, I’m a very good listener, for those who are ever in need of a chat.

SPORT New coach looks to take Tigers to the next level Kyneton Tigers will go in with a similar look this season as it hopes to go one step further in the Country Basketball League north-west. Having made a preliminary final last season, the Tigers have kept their core group of players together. New coach Adrian Adams said the group was looking forward to the challenge this season. “We’ve been training hard for five to six weeks and we’re looking forward to the season starting up. “The majority of the group is the same. A couple of them have left from last season and we’ve added a couple of players. “It’s good to have a core group and hopefully they can develop and move forward.” This is Adams first year being involved in the CBL. He comes to the Tigers having been at Melton’s Big V program. “I was looking to progress to a higher level,” he said. “There wasn’t a [head coaching] job at Melton so I applied for this one and I’m looking

forward to the challenge. “I’ve done a lot of research to get acquainted on how it works. “It’s not too dissimilar to how the Big V works on game days. There’s a few familiar faces especially from the Sunbury and Ballarat areas.” The Tigers have lost Rebecca Van Kuyk, who has moved back to New Zealand. They’ve added some more youth into the side. Amelia Jarvis and Emily Attard both played the recent Big V season for Ballarat Rush’s youth championship team. Attard, a guard, is a Melton junior and previously worked with Adams. Jarvis is set to add more flexibility to the side. “Ameila is a small forward who can play anywhere from the two to five spot, she has some versatility with where she can play,” Adams said. “She’ll support the likes of the three Mangan girls and Molly Greetham.” Adams said they were expecting to build on

the preliminary final they made last season. Getting their first win over Bendigo was another goal they are aiming for. The Tigers had a tough start to the season, with six of the 16 player squad unavailable on the opening weekend. Michelle Fletcher, the three Mangans’, Grace Cooper and Bec Dekozas all missed the double header. Speaking before the games, Adams said it was a good chance for the younger girls to step up and show what they can do. The Tigers had split results. They started with a win on Saturday night against Echuca Pirates, 58-50. Adrienne Cameron top scored for the Tigers with 14 points. On Sunday, the Tigers lost to Maryborough Blaze, 62-54. Macedon got its first win of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield season, beating Rupertswood on Saturday. Macedon was bowled out for 147 in its innings, before restricting Rupo to 137. Wallan just snuck home against the Sunbury Kangaroos, winning by 12 runs. Wallan made 9-178, with the Kangaroos bowled out for 166. Gisborne defeated Sunbury United, while there was no play in the match between East Sunbury and Bacchus Marsh.

It was a disappointing way to start life in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Division 5 Russell Pollock Shield. With plenty of hype and excitement around the club, Sunbury was hoping to start a new competition on a winning note. But instead, it had to settle for a first round loss to Moonee Valley. Roar captain-coach Craig Ballinger said there was only one negative out of the day, the result. “We should have won,” he said. “The hype is still there and there were nerves built up. “The delayed start kept the butterflies alive. We’ve got the first game under way and we know what everyone is capable of.

Instead of playing Footscray ANA, Sunbury travelled to Ormond Park to face Moonee Valley. Ballinger said no matter who they played, being in a new competition meant they were facing the unknown. Moonee Valley was restricted to 8-150 from its overs. Jason McGann took four wickets for Sunbury. Ballinger said they were confident they could get the job done chasing that total but it wasn’t to be – Sunbury was bowled out for 135 in the final over. “Chasing 150 on that oval, we were 100 per cent confident of chasing down that total. “We batted well in patches. They got hold of us in the middle overs,” Ballinger said. “The spinners strangled us and we weren’t used to it. It’s an unknown on a turf wicket and they bowled in the right areas. It was taken away from us between the 20th and 30th overs.” Ballinger said they would learn from the match. Stephen Treweek top scored for Sunbury, coming in at number eight, making 28. Ballinger said Treweek nearly won the match off his own bat, but like he was with the ball, he was unlucky.

Calder Cannons’ Georgia Patrikios is trying not to focus too much on next week’s AFLW draft. A talented junior footballer, Patrikios is expected to be among the top picks in the draft. Speaking at the recent draft combine, Patrikios said her first focus was performing well at the combine, then, it’s a waiting game. “It’s really nerve-wracking, everything is happening at once,” she said. “It’s been really good, I can’t complain. I try not to think about the draft too much. “Whatever happens, happens. I don’t have control over things now.” Patrikios, 18, whose home club was the Sunbury Lions this year, said she thought she had done everything that she could this season to show her talent. The year started with a grand final appearance with the Calder Cannons. She also finished second in the club’s best and fairest. “I think I started a bit quiet, coming into the

season I had an ankle injury that I wasn’t 100 per cent healed from,” she said. “So I came in a bit behind the eight ball. From there, I worked into the season pretty well. “We made finals and I played well in those finals. “We just fell short at the end … That was a crazy experience, not just for myself, but the whole team. I’m very lucky to be there.” Patrikios went straight from the Cannons to Vic Metro ahead of the National Championships. The midfielder was one of the standouts for Metro and was shocked when she was named the championships’ most valuable player. “I was actually really surprised,” she said. “I was looking around to see who I thought it was going to be and then I heard my name. It caught me off guard a little bit, but I’m honoured to get the medal. “I think I started really well on the Monday

Way said they knew early on that if they were to win the game it would likely come down late in the day. “Two hundred is always a tough chase,” he said. “We were behind the run rate early on and if we were going to get there, it would be off the last over. “We had to make 85 off the last 10 overs and had been going at a pretty good rate. “We were set and threw everything at it.” The 15 runs needed off the last over proved to be no challenge for one of the competition’s best players – Way led the way for Romsey, finishing 79 not out, with five fours and four sixes. Way said the win was important after Romsey dropped its season-opening match. He said the match was an early 12 point game, with Bacchus Marsh, the two-time reigning premier, expected to be among the mix again. Romsey has made the semi-finals the past two years and is sticking with a similar line-up as it tries to go at least one step further. “It’s a similar looking side with a couple of young fellows coming through,” Way said. “We want to keep on coming through. It’s important to get early wins on the board. “A couple of years ago we lost our first four matches and were doing the chasing all season. “If we can get ahead early, it will make the second half of the season [easier] … We’re hoping to have a good run in the one-dayers, it’s important.” Way said Matt Milne, Alfie Miles and William Collins were the younger players they expected to keep on improving. Miles has come in and taken on the wicketkeeper duties. “We’ve gone from having a 40-year-old keeper to having a 16-year-old,” Way said. In other matches, Diggers Rest remains unbeaten, having accounted for Riddell. The Burras made 8-184 from their overs, before restricting the Bombers to 125. The Burras shared the runs and wickets around.

Patrikios said Prespakis, who is a good friend, had given her plenty of advice throughout the year. Capping off the year, Patrikios made her VFLW debut with Essendon. “That was really fun, it was really good playing with girls that have been through the AFLW system. They taught me a few things going through that program.” Patrikios, who sees her speed, agility and composure as her strengths, said her focus between now and the draft on October 22 was to keep training hard. Bulldogs test the Waters Gisborne has wasted no time in appointing a new coach for next year’s Bendigo Football League season. Just two days after publicly announcing that Clinton Young wouldn’t be continuing on coaching next season, Gisborne announced that Rob Waters would take on the coaching role. Waters, who played at the Bulldogs, won two premierships as coach of North Ballarat City in the Ballarat Football League. He has more recently been midfield coach at North Melbourne’s VFL side. Bulldogs president John Wood said they thought Waters was the right fit for the club. He said the opportunity to coach his own side again was something that interested Wood. “Rob is almost a local, he lives in the Woodend area,” he said. “He’s a former player at Gisborne. Whenever he had the opportunity he would come and watch and has a fair knowledge of the group.” Woods said the experience that Waters brought to the club was invaluable. He said Waters had done a lot of work with young players. “With North Ballarat City, I think they were quite low on the ladder with a young group. “We’re not too dissimilar, except we’re higher on the ladder. “He is proven to get the best out of sides. He’s been exposed to country football and having some experience at VFL. “We think he brings a bit of experience and knowledge. He will be really good for us.” Woods said Waters comes to the club at an exciting time, with the side moving up the ladder. This year they fell just short of a grand final. “It’s been a real journey since 2016 when we started the rebuild and this year we almost got there.” Young, who decided not to reapply for the role, is assessing his football future.
