Sparing one hour of your time could save a life. The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) has identified Melton, Brimbank and the Macedon Ranges as having higher than average suicide rates and it’s calling on the community to help it take action. The network is offering a short online course – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) – designed to help people recognise if someone they know is at risk of suicide. The network’s suicide prevention program officer Kiran Nair said suicide awareness is the ability to have a conversation with somebody and to be able to take action if they identify a sign.

- Kiran Nair “It’s also about having the knowledge to actually identify a sign,” he said. “Things like R U OK? Day are great initiatives, but they’re only one day. Suicide occurs throughout the year, so it’s a conversation that needs to happen throughout the year. “The training aims to bust common myths. “It’s actually safe to ask someone if they’re thinking about suicide if it’s done safely and from there it’s about persuading and linking them to other services to make sure they get help if they are in crisis.” Mr Nair said picking up on signs that someone is struggling is a pivotal first step. “You don’t need to be diagnosed with a mental health condition or illness to take your own life and this helps to recognise those signs,” he said. “Someone might be giving away their possessions, or they might be talking about cherished times that they’ve had out of the blue. The training helps people pick up on these signs, in addition to having the conversation with them. “It’s a really heavy topic, but we need to break through that barrier and stigma so people can have that conversation.” Common misconceptions surrounding suicide are also covered in the module.

“One of the biggest myths is that people who talk about killing themselves don’t mean it and that’s a really wrong one. You shouldn’t underestimate,” Mr Nair said. “The other big myth is that asking someone might put the idea into their head. The evidence
is that asking someone actually leads to better results because it opens up the conversation.” He called on the community to help bring down the suicide rate. “This training is a short online module, it takes about 60 minutes and it’s completely free.

Concern over Woodend freeway service centre A new freeway service centre has been proposed for Woodend. Macedon Ranges council received a planning permit application to build a freeway service centre and access road to the Calder Freeway on Barkers Road, Woodend. The application proposes a convenience store, three kitchens two drive-throughs, internal and external dining areas, a secluded picnic area, truck and car refueling areas, parking bays for 13 trucks, toilets and a play area for children. Applicant Crowther & Sadler Pty Ltd lodged the application with the council in
April. The subject land is about 5.1 hectares and is three kilometres north-west of Woodend’s town centre. In a planning report, the applicant stated the proposed freeway service centre is the first facility catering to northbound traffic after the Calder Park service centre, 44 kilometres south of the proposed Woodend centre. The plans have come under fire from the Macedon Ranges Residents Association. Association secretary Christine Pruneau said a service centre was not needed in Woodend. “Why would you need something like that
there?” she said. “It goes from being a freeway with a very rural outlook to a freeway that’s got this thing in the middle of it like Calder Park.” Ms Pruneau raised concerns about the service centre possibly directing motorists and visitors away from the heart of Woodend. “If you’re trying to encourage people to go into the town when they come here then this has potential to not make that happen,” she said. “I think there is lot of reasons why you wouldn’t approve it – the potential impact of the town’s economy, you’ve got the potential
impact of people who are living around it and then you have the impact of landscape which decimates the concept of rural. “You come out of Melbourne and you’ve got that rural outlook. It’ll be quite confrontational. “What good does it actually do for the shire?” The council was unable to say when a decision will be made on the application. The family of three will be taking part in the 10th annual Walk For Prems on October 27 – an annual fundraiser for charity Life’s Little Treasures, which is dedicated to supporting families of babies born sick or prior to 37 weeks gestation. “We have this team it’s called Evelyn’s Entourage,” Ms Maher said. “We definitely had a lot of support when we were in our situation so we want to be able to give that support back. “It’s been a big year so it’s very special, especially because it [the walk] falls around her first birthday.”

Baby Evelyn is a little blessing. Evelyn was born via cesarean at 27 weeks to first-time parents Aisling Maher and Jayson Vella after Ms Maher suffered from a rare condition known as HELLP syndrome – a complication with high blood pressure during pregnancy. “It was completely out of the blue,” Ms Maher said. “It happens in one per cent of all pregnancies.” The Sunbury couple was in Ireland visiting family at the time.
Evelyn weighed only 1.26 kilograms at birth and had to stay in Ireland for five months. “She wasn’t sick when she was born but she was undercooked,” Ms Maher said. “She was in hospital until she was full term. She was then discharged but wasn’t able to fly back to Australia … until her lungs were mature enough. “She was born in winter so we had to be very careful of her immunity. “We were really lucky everything went really well for us. Macedon Ranges motorists can look forward to safer and smoother roads. Road surface improvements will be undertaken on key stretches of the Calder Freeway near Macedon and on Gisborne-Melton Road in Gisborne as part of the state government’s road maintenance blitz. The projects are part of a $57.2 million investment to rebuild, resurface and repair about 268 kilometres of road across regional Victoria. The Macedon Ranges projects are currently in the planning stage and are expected to be completed by June 2020. Once started, work crews will be out in full force and reduced speeds and traffic management will be in place. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said she was delighted key roads in the Macedon Ranges were receiving an upgrade. “This will be very welcome news for those people who use the Calder [Freeway] every day,” she said. “We’re rebuilding sections so that people can have a smoother and safer drive home.” Roads Minister Jaala Pulford welcomed the news. “Whether it’s our truck drivers, visitors travelling to our region, or locals heading down to the shops, we’re fixing roads across central Victoria to give everyone a safer and smoother journey,” she said. Sunbury goes on show The annual Sunbury Agriculture Show is back for another year and the excitement is building. This weekend’s event marks the 99th year the show has been running and show secretary Sandie Braun said there would be something for everyone to feast their eyes on. “We have a very big horse show, we’ll have some chooks and several different sheep breeds being judged,” she said. “Salesian College Sunbury [students] will bring along sheep and cattle to the show. We have a very big handicraft pavilion and carnival rides. There will be a very big pet parade and my favourite event, the dog high jump.” Up to 13,000 people are expected to attend
the show at the weekend. “We certainly encourage all, especially new residents to the area, to come along because you get a lot of the things you get at the Melbourne Show but on a smaller version,” Ms Braun said. “We have a very small committee who runs the show. We’re all very dedicated and we have worked very hard to put on a good show. It’s a real team effort.” The Sunbury Agriculture Show is on Saturday, October 12 at Sunbury Recreation Reserve, Riddell Road from 8.30am-4.30pm. Airfield plan doesn’t fly: resident By Jessica Micallef There is no public benefit or justification for Macedon Ranges council to spend money on plans to upgrade the Kyneton Airfield, a resident has claimed. Paul Reid, whose house is under the direct flight path of the airfield’s north-south runway, has attacked the recently released draft Kyneton Airfield Masterplan. Under the plan, flights at the Kyneton Airfield are set to almost double from 5110 to 10,000 a year. Up to 12 privately-owned hangars, three aviation business hangars, an office building and a tourism hub could also be built on part of the airfield currently zoned for farming. Mr Reid has raised concerns about the proposed extra flights. “The noise can be quite intrusive,” he said. “If we are out in the backyard we can’t hear each other talking. “Some of the planes are quite low. It’s a bit of an intrusion on your privacy and enjoyment of your own property. “I am concerned if they double the number [of flights], there’ll be double the noise and if they extend the runway there could be bigger and noisier planes.” Mr Reid said the plans proposed for the airfield were “extensive” and that the money should be spent elsewhere. “In any of our towns you can find lots of basic transport issues like footpaths and street lighting and potholes. That could do with the money more urgently,” he said. “I don’t think there is any justification in doubling the size and doubling the activity. “It won’t benefit the community.” The master plan is expected to be presented at the council’s October meeting.

Kyneton water plant upgrade By Jessica Micallef Coliban Water has announced plans to improve waste and domestic treatment processes at the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant. In a bid to protect the Campaspe River, additional aerators will be installed in lagoons to ensure the water released from the plant is within the Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) licence conditions. The installation of extra aerators forms part of a three phase project. In June, Coliban Water was forced to
undertake a daily emergency discharge of class C recycled water from the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant into the Campaspe River. Up to four megalitres per day of class C recycled water, mixed with class B recycled water, has been released into the Campaspe River. The Kyneton Reclamation Plant treats wastewater from about 3800 residential, business and trade waste customers in Kyneton, Malmsbury, Trentham and Tylden. Coliban Water project director Tony Kelly said the project will help ensure water released from the plant is keeping within EPA Victoria’s
standard. “Our plant has struggled to store the treated water it produces when there isn’t a demand for irrigation water or sufficient flows to release water to the Campaspe River,” he said. “As part of the phase one works, we will be installing additional aerators on our lagoons to enable oxygen to circulate and increase the treatment capacity.” Phase one works are expected to be completed by March next year. Phases two and three will include additional storage lagoons and increased irrigation with
the aim to discharge high quality water into the Campaspe River. Mr Kelly said when all phases are complete the plant will operate within its EPA licence conditions and will meet future residential and business growth in the area. “We acknowledge the distress and concern from the Kyneton community when we have released treated water that breaches our EPA licence conditions,” he said. “We are committed to keeping the community informed and engaged on this project as it progresses.
Sands of imagination Fluttering fairies have flown into Riddells Creek. The Enchanted Forest Sand Sculpting Exhibition showcases 15 sculptures, each handcrafted from 30 tonnes of sand to capture children’s magical imaginations. Exhibition tour guide Rosie Gallicchio said international artists have created the dazzling display that tells a story. “We have 15 sculptures produced by 11 different artists from all around the world, including Australia,” she said. “You try and find the missing key and help Tony and Odette. We take you on a little journey. You get tokens along the way to help you understand things about friendship, about fun and having courage in your life. It’s a story that incorporates the important things that we should be looking for … to have a great life.” Ms Gallicchio said children can feast their eyes on imaginary creatures that come to life
through sand. “We have fairies, dragons, unicorns, goblins. We’ve got fairy castles, griffons. We have an enchanted tree, we’ve got a pegasus. There are lots of creatures,” she said. “There’s a great sand pit to play in and an area for kids to try their hands at sand sculpting. They can go in the arts and crafts room and create some sand art and take it home with them.” The exhibition will run until April 30 at 1012 Kilmore Road, Riddells Creek, Wednesday to Sunday. Not so grand for motorists
By Jessica Micallef Ben Bush is hoping to be Macedon’s very own marathon man. The 42-year-old will on Sunday take part in his first Melbourne Marathon – a 42-kilometre run around Melbourne’s CBD. It’s a big task for someone who only began running about 18 months ago. “I really do enjoy it. It’s a great way to clear the head or fill the head,” Mr Bush said “I didn’t know I enjoyed running until I turned around my attitude towards health and fitness. Now it’s something that is not a negotiable thing.” Mr Bush participated in his first half marathon last year – the Run Melbourne event – and raised about $3000 for the Alannah and Madeline Foundation. This year he wanted to go a step further and raise funds for an organisation that was close to his heart. “I said to my sister-in-law ‘Why don’t I do a run to raise money for Down Syndrome Victoria’?” he said. “My nephew has down syndrome and the organisation has been an unbelievable support … for my sister-in-law. My goal this year, which may or may not be realistic, is $10,000. “It’s the least we can do. Macedon Ranges and Hume police were out in full force as part of Operation Scoreboard during the AFL grand final long weekend. Hume police detected 111 traffic offences during the four-day road safety campaign, while Macedon Ranges police detected 63. Speeding drivers and motorists disobeying signs and signals were the highest offences recorded in Hume, with 29 drivers detected. Sixteen motorists were caught driving an unregistered vehicle and six drivers were caught drink driving. In Macedon, 41 motorists were pulled over for speeding, while nine drivers were caught behind the wheel of an unregistered vehicle. MY PLACE Sarah Wilkinson will be performing at the Bendigo Blues Roots and Musical Festival in November. The Kyneton resident has also spent eight years studying at the University of Melbourne. She spoke with Jessica Micallef. What is your connection to the Macedon Ranges? I grew up in Woodend. My family are still there and since moving out for university, I am back most weekends performing in the area. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about music and the way it makes people feel, as well as learning new things and getting out of my comfort zone. I am also very partial to a good coffee and a hearty brunch.
What has been some of your favourite venues to perform at? I had the privilege of performing at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo a couple of Blues and Roots Festivals ago – that was absolutely incredible. I have also been lucky enough to play on the Bendigo Blues tram a couple of times, which was also great fun. A number of years ago I was invited, along with Jarrod Shaw, to play the Christmas Carols at Hanging Rock. That will always be one of my favourites. I also really love playing at weddings. It’s a really special thing to be able to share that moment with the happy couple. How does it feel to know you’ll be performing at the Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival? How long have you been singing for? I have been singing for as long as I can remember, but I’ve been singing professionally since I was 16-years-old.

know about you? The most surprising thing about me would probably be that after eight long years of university, in December I will be graduating from the University of Melbourne with a doctor of medicine. It’s pretty surreal but I’m going to be a doctor next year.

In this project, students develop a journal that includes brainstormed ideas, planning, media research and final reflections and then present their findings to an audience during the Expo event. The journal often includes great visual representations via their A3 sketch book. • The Year 10-12 Arts & Technology Exhibition. An opportunity for students studying across the range of visual arts and technology subjects to display the product of their year’s work in folios, development pieces and final products. Each of these three displays celebrates the importance of 21st Century skills such as creativity, collaboration,

“A Stitch in time” An impassioned, emotional speech by a young girl calling for action on the environment has certainly stirred mixed reactions. I am not about to enter into the “climate change” debate, a debate that has been going on for years and years, nor do I feel the need to become “political” which is somewhat unusual for me. I do feel however that our world is in pain and there are some simple things that we can all do to help restore some balance. The “no plastic bags” movement has been a great success but there is more that we can do. Paper straws are making a come-back which is so good and re-usable coff f ee cups are very popular. ff r In the home r. we can reduce the chemicals used in cleaning – white vinegar and eucalyptus are wonderful and will not harm the environment, or us, as bleaches do. One of our grandsons turned 1 early this year and I was so impressed that there was not a balloon in sight but rather beautiful paper decorations. SPORT Gisborne greats get their chance in the green and gold Two Gisborne men had the opportunity of a lifetime, representing the Australian Over-60 cricket team on a tour of England. Dale Thornton and Paul McDonald represent different cricket clubs, but share the same home town. They were part of the touring party which played against England, Pakistan and local English teams in July. For both it was their first time representing Australia. Thornton said he had never imagined playing cricket for Australia, let alone at the age of 61. “Last season was my first playing in over-60s,” he said. “I played at Gisborne and Essendon for many years. I was still playing McIntyre Cup until I was 54. “A mate Dave Cordy, who had played for Australia in Over-60s, asked if I wanted to play at the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Over-60s. “I really enjoyed it.” Thornton was selected in a Victorian team for the national championships for veterans last year which they won. They repeated the feat this year.

Making the Victorian team was exciting enough for Thornton, let alone being picked to play at the next level. “I never really thought about it,” he said. “They played New Zealand in March and I didn’t get on that one. They were still looking at me, as I’m still bowling, and mobile and batting. “In late April I got a berth in the Australian team.”
The tour was 18 games, including three one-day matches against England for the “Grey Ashes”. The English won the series 2-1. McDonald, 63, was also surprised to get selected. “I wasn’t pushing for it,” he said. “They picked the team and I was playing well at the right time. “It wasn’t the plan at all, but I’m glad it

Playing the newly promoted Saints, it was a little unknown for United going into the match, but they fired with both the bat and ball, to win by 107 runs. Sent in, most of United’s top and middle order got starts, with the side posting 4-221 off its 40 overs. Adam Dudderidge top scored 84 not out, while Ryan Billinghurst made 39. New recruit Dinuska Malan chipped in with 36 not out. St Anthonys got off to a decent start and were 1-65. But it all went wrong from there, losing 5-6 to slump to 6-71. From there it was hard work, with the Saints batting out the overs, finishing 8-114. Dilan Chandima, another new face for United, was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-20 off eight overs. It was a new-look bowling attack for United. Matt Livingstone, who won the GDCA best player medal for the 2017-18 season, made his debut for the club as well. Livingstone, who had been playing at Riddell, had the past season off. There were a couple of thrillers to open the season, with Gisborne and Riddell getting important wins. Gisborne claimed the points against Bacchus Marsh in the grand final rematch. The Bulls made 7-175 on the back of 66 from skipper James Lidgett. The Dragons made the runs with one over remaining, finishing 7-178. Englishman Tom Sanders made 42 on debut for the Dragons. Riddell snatched victory against Woodend in the final over. Woodend made a solid 6-177 from its overs with all of the top order getting starts. Adam Johnstone top scored with 43. Riddell’s top order also started well, before the middle order failed, leaving the side 6-95. The Bombers lower order continued to fight, but at 9-151 it was a tough challenge ahead. The game got down to the final over, with a six from Ben Said on the second ball of the last over sealing the win. The Bombers finishing 9-178.

He said you could tell the England teams played a lot more cricket, with some playing two to three times a week. “I did OK and I didn’t disgrace myself.” Both men said they would love the opportunity to play for Australia again. Former Tiger returns to the den as senior coach

The timing is right for Tom Waters to return home to the Lancefield Football Club. Having made a name for himself at the Tigers before playing at Gisborne and Macedon, Waters will take on the senior coaching role at Lancefield next season. Waters said the plan was always to come back home to Lancefield. He said he told Macedon when he signed on for 2019 that it would likely be his last year at the club. “It’s good and I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “It’s a long-time coming and it’s finally done now. I was always going to come back. “When I left Gisborne I hated footy and was going to walk away from coaching. “I ended up at Macedon and fell in love again. I was there for a couple of years, I didn’t want to win a premiership and walk straight away.” With the Tigers getting things right off field, Waters said it was an exciting time to come
back to the club. He said coaching was something that he had always wanted to do, having been an assistant coach at Macedon. “My body is slowing down now and my play is dropping off a bit,” he said. “I didn’t feel ready to go out on my own a couple of years ago, I wanted to learn more. “When Jeff [Andrews] stood down [at Macedon] he asked me straight up, did I want to coach. “I’m better positioned than I was a couple of years ago.” Waters said the reaction to his appointment had been a positive one and he was hopeful that they could recruit a few players to help strengthen the squad. He said some of the existing playing group was already keen to get pre-season training underway. “A lot of the boys are super keen, they’ve been here during the hard times and they now
want to get some success. “I’ve been talking to a few players who have left the club in the last couple of years. So far it’s positive, but no one has signed yet.” One area Waters is looking at focusing on is bringing through the juniors at the club. The Tigers had under-19s this season for the first time in a number of years. “Even though many were doubling up, they’re better in the long run,” he said of the under-19s. “I’ll do a lot more work with the juniors and seniors together. “We want to make sure they keep coming through.” Waters said he would continue to play for the next couple of years, before focusing on coaching. “I might play a bit more forward or back more and watch the play a bit more.” Tara Murray
History made as duo tie By Tara Murray Sam Ramsay and Ned Gentile made history last week when the pair became the first two players to tie for the Calder Cannons’ Robert Hyde Medal. Two of the favourites going into the count, it would come down to the final round. Ramsay, who finished the season in hot form, was able to draw level with Gentile on 99 votes. For both players, the win caps off their time at the Cannons. Gentile said while some people had mentioned he was a chance to take out the medal, he wasn’t so sure. “I knew I was a little bit of a chance,” he said. “I thought I had a consistent year, but didn’t star. I didn’t have many best-on-grounds, but I kept putting in good performances. “I knew he [Ramsay] had such a good end to the year and finished strongly. “I’m excited to share it with Rama and be involved in a little bit of history.” Gentile, who comes from Airport West, was also awarded the club’s most courageous player. Among the highlights this year for him was captaining the side while Brodie Newman was on metro duties. Ramsay said it was a shock for him when his name was called out as one of the winners of the Hyde Medal. “I didn’t start the year well,” Ramsay said. “I got a concussion early in the year and I missed a week. I then hurt my shoulder and missed a week and had a couple of poor games. “I had a really good back end to the year and I thought I might come back and finish second or third. “I’m just stoked, I didn’t see it coming.” For Ramsay, the catalyst to his late season form was a change of position. He averaged 31.4 possessions a game in the last eight matches. “I started to get into the midfield on the inside, instead of on the wing. “At the time, the metro boys were away and the assistant coach threw me in there and I haven’t looked back. “I was going back to the way I was used to playing.” Gentile and Ramsay were keys for the Cannons throughout the year, when other players were away on metro duties. Missing out on selection for the national championships gave them motivation. Gentile, who was captain at St Bernards, also missed out on selection for the national and state combines. “My bottom age wasn’t as good as others who were selected,” Gentile said. “I was a little bit disappointed, but it’s fire in the belly. “I have to work harder and hopefully I’ll still get there. I’m 18 years-old, it just makes you want to work harder.”

Sunbury off to a fast start

Ramsay’s strong back half of the season got him an invite to last week’s state combine. “It’s good to know that I’m still being noticed,” Ramsay said. “I’m pretty excited and it’s been one big blur since the season finished.” Ramsay, who was one of six Gisborne players
in the Cannons squad this year, said it was exciting what the next weeks could bring. He said he had been speaking to one of his best mates, Zac Butters, who got drafted to Port Adelaide to get an idea of what to expect. “I just want to play footy, I’m happy to play footy anywhere.”
Sunbury started the Bowls Victorian pennant division 1, section 2 season on a high note. Having added to last season’s side that made finals, Sunbury is expected to be among the contenders again this year. And it couldn’t have asked for a much better start than the one they got against Essendon 2 on Saturday. Sunbury came away with the win, 104 (16)-66 (2). Mark Cowan’s rink won 31-10, while Carla Krizanic’s rink won 28-11. It was a bit closer in the other two rinks, with Todd Trewarne’s rink having a two shot win, while Dylan Filuk’s rink had a two shot loss. Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was a good day to start the season for the top side. Danny Fortune was the standout on the day. He said they had several new players making their debuts for the club. Victorian under-18 team member Sophie Kruzman, Robert Sutherland and Lee Dundon all made their debuts, while Alex Stewart returned to the club after several seasons away. Glennon said after a disappointing end to last season, when the side was knocked out in the first week of finals, there was a lot of motivation in the group. “To get a win under the belt is a good way to start,” he said. “We have a pretty strong top side now and as usual we’re looking to have a good season. “Anything less than making finals would be disappointing.” It was a good day for Sunbury with four of its six sides winning.
