Tim Tam is on a roll Tim Tam the goat is having a wheely good time. The little bush goat arrived at animal rescue farm Edgar’s Mission last month after he was found by a bushwalker. Edgar’s Mission founder and director Pam Ahern said it was heartbreaking to see Tim Tam struggling to walk. “He couldn’t use his back legs at all,” she said. “He was still a plucky little goat and he would try and drag himself around on his front legs. His back legs just couldn’t do what his body wanted to do. “It was really sad, he’s such a happy little guy.” Tim Tam has now been gifted with a fancy new set of wheels to help get the groove back in his hooves. “It’s helped enormously,” Ms Ahern said. “We do two or three sessions a day in the cart and you can see the difference. He can stand a little bit on his own.” Ms Ahern said she was touched by Tim Tam’s story. “It’s just a lovely story of hope,” she said. “It’s a real testament to the goodness of the human heart – a member of the public saw this goat in trouble, and they knew that what they chose to do next decided whether he lived or died. Sunbury market solid By Jessica Micallef Sunbury has been named one of Melbourne’s best performing real estate suburbs, new figures reveal. The Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) recently released its June 2019 quarterly and annual data, revealing Sunbury has kept its top-five spot for annual median house price growth. Sunbury ranked number one as Melbourne’s best performing market in the past year, with a median house price at $545,000 as of June 2019, up 2.3 per cent on the previous year.

REIV president Robyn Waters said Sunbury was one of only five Melbourne suburbs to record a positive median house price growth. “The only suburbs that seemed to escape the property market correction this financial year were Sunbury, Donvale, Ascot Vale, Officer and Cranbourne North,” she said. “Growth suburbs of Officer and Sunbury retained their position in the top-five list for annual median house price growth for the second consecutive quarter.” In the Macedon Ranges, Woodend was ranked sixth as one of Melbourne’s top-performing growth towns between March

and June this year, with a median house price of $792,500, up 5.2 per cent from $753,000 in March. The median house price in regional Victoria increased by 3.8 per cent to $404,500, up from $390,000 in the past 12 months. “Regional Victoria has done well in the past financial year,” Ms Waters said. Melbourne’s top performing suburb was Mornington, with a median price increase of 18.5 per cent since March. “The Melbourne property market has created ideal opportunities for those wanting to trade up,” Ms Waters said.

Overall, the median house for Melbourne is at less than $900,000 for the first time in almost three years. Ms Waters said REIV’s June 2019 quarterly data report showed the median house price of $894,000 is the lowest it’s been since September 2016 and is down 1.8 per cent from $910,000. “Two recent interest rates cuts and APRA’s [Australian Prudential Regulation Authority] advice to relax lending standards are among the factors that have cultivated an environment conducive to upsizing,” Ms Waters said. “Melbourne’s median house price fell 2.4 per cent to $785,000.”

Millions lost on gaming machines By Jessica Micallef Gamblers in Hume and the Macedon Ranges lost more than $121 million on gaming machines in the past financial year, new figures reveal. The Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation recently released gaming machine loss and expenditure data for the 2018-19 financial year, which revealed losses of nearly $2.7 billion across the state, an increase of $3.5 million on the previous year. Hume gamblers lost $111,695,894 in the

past financial year, up from $109,623,804 the previous year. Macedon Ranges losses for the 2018-19 financial year were $9,594,189, up from $9,557,852. Sunbury’s highest earning venue was the Royal Hotel, bringing in nearly $7 million, while Gisborne’s Castello’s Victorian Tavern made $5.5 million. Alliance for Gambling Reform spokesperson Tim Costello is calling on the state government to respond to gambling harm as a public health issue.

“In extreme cases, poker machines cause the loss of lives via suicide,” he said. “Then there is the loss of the homes, families, relationships, jobs, care and much more due to gambling harm. “Pokies dens are designed to fleece people regardless of socio-economic background or geography, and especially target people who may be feeling isolated or lonely. That’s predatory behaviour. “The royal commission into financial services exposed predatory behaviour in the banking industry and the community has

rightly been up in the arms about it. Victorians should be shouting from the rooftops about how the poker machine industry preys on people and seek an end to this exploitation in their state.” Gambling reform advocate Anna Bardsley said the results were disappointing. “We have these reprehensible machines sucking money out of people, causing immense harm,” she said. “Imagine how much stronger our economy would be if people spent $2.7 billion each year on goods and services in Victoria instead?”

Donate for an uplifting experience For many women, a bra is just another piece of clothing. But for some, it’s more than that. Gisborne resident Sarah Phegan is a senior stylist and bra fit specialist at lingerie and clothing brand company Intimo and she knows the importance one bra can hold. Intimo works in partnership with the Uplift Project, which collects new and second-hand bras and donates them to women in disadvantaged communities across the world. Ms Phegan said Intimo founder Sue White had a vision to provide women with properly fitted bras.

“She started Intimo because she could never find anything that fitted her properly and she kind of figured she wouldn’t be the only woman that wouldn’t be able to find a bra that fit,” she said. “One of her focuses is also helping women who are less fortunate than ourselves.” Intimo has sent bras to Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Cook Islands, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Philippines, Bali, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Botswana and Uganda. “Three years ago, the girls went to Fiji to do fittings for local women,” Ms Phegan said.

“Some of the women who came for the fittings travelled for days. “One of the stories was there were two sisters and they had one bra between them and they used to take turns to go to mass because you couldn’t go to mass without a bra. “When they got fitted, they were so excited because the first time in their life, they were able to go to mass together.” To donate bras, contact Ms Phegan on sarah. phegan@intimo.com.au

Grants of between $3000 and $10,000 are available for community sports clubs, as part of VicHealth’s latest round of Active Club Grants. Northern Victoria MP Wendy Lovell encouraged Macedon Ranges clubs to apply. “This is about making grassroots sports more accessible to Macedon locals, so everyone can get involved in the sport they love,” she said. “We want everyone to get active and embrace a healthy lifestyle, regardless of their age, gender or ability. “Our local clubs work hard to improve the health of our community.” Acting VicHealth chief executive Lyn Roberts said the grants can be used to create more opportunities for women and men to get active. “Sport clubs are at the heart of their communities, providing opportunities for people to have a go at sport while also being social and connecting with others,” she said. “We know costs can be a burden, particularly at grassroots clubs. Active Club grants can help cover the start-up costs involved in establishing new initiatives, including uniforms, equipment and instructor training. “These grants can help sports clubs throughout the Macedon electorate to offer more social or modified options that are less competitive so that everyone can take part.” Applications close Friday, August 30, 4pm. Team Garfield on track By Jessica Micallef Four Sunbury men will be driving towards a good cause. Sunbury Rotarians and brothers Michael and Terry McCabe, together with Mario Spiteri and Jeff Sarbach will this month participate in the Variety Big Bash drive to raise funds for the children’s charity. Michael said the motivation to participate in the drive was to support Australian children. “Variety fills the gap between what the Royal Children’s Hospital does and what the government does. Variety helps supply the things that other bodies can’t do,” he said. The men will be driving from Melbourne to Geraldton, Western Australia, stopping at 10 towns and covering more than 4000 kilometres in a 1967 HR Holden. “It’s been heavily modified with suspension and protection underneath because where we’ll be driving will be pretty rough,” Michael said. “The engines’ chained in place so if something does happen to the engine, it doesn’t smash into the front of the radiator. It’s got a bulbar, it’s got dust lights on it to warn people in the dust we’ve stopped. “The car has to meet a set criteria of safety standards before it’s allowed to go on the run and we passed with flying colours.” The men have spent the past four months modifying the car at MJ Auto Electric in Sunbury. They decided to name their team in honour of the car’s famous history. “We’re Team Garfield,” Michael said. “The car was built for the 20th Century Fox Studios. It was a promotional car for the movie Garfield. I saw it advertised and Jeff and I had a look at it. We bought it, drove it home and pulled it apart.” Michael and Terry said they were excited to

Funds put focus on family and elder abuse Macedon Ranges council is doing its bit to help prevent family violence. The council received a state government grant of $30,000 last month to go towards the Macedon Ranges Elder Abuse Prevention Network. The funding, given to the existing network, will assist in preventing elder abuse in local communities within the Macedon Ranges. Statewide, $9 million has been allocated for about 60 projects and initiatives as part of the state’s Free From Violence grants program. Women’s Health Grampians has received more than $44,000 to put toward recruiting, training and supporting women. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas welcomed the funding. “I’m proud we’re investing in the Macedon Ranges region to prevent family violence and all forms of violence,” she said. “We’re delivering landmark reforms to stamp out family violence and this funding to local organisations will help drive community change and bolster these efforts. “Family violence affects all areas. It’s critical to support groups who are working to change attitudes.” Jessica Micallef

New station for Carlsruhe CFA By Jessica Micallef A new Carlsruhe CFA station is a step closer. Carlsruhe CFA captain Peter Baldwin said land has been purchased for a new station to be built on Cobb and Co Road. Mr Baldwin said the new station was still in the planning stages and the CFA was in discussions with the council. The state government last month announced $600,000 in funding to provide the Carlsruhe CFA with a new home. The funds were allocated in the 2019-20 state budget. The CFA has contributed a further

$60,000 and the Carlsruhe CFA has chipped in $80,000. The station will include a three-bay motor room, male and female toilets, a multi-purpose room, on-site carparking and a dedicated truck turning area. “It’s a completely new station,” Mr Baldwin said. “Our old shed has well and truly been outgrown – it was put up in the early 1980s. “The new station will allow for future growth of the brigade and will improve operational capability. “The new meeting room facilities will

also provide a central location for training, meetings and local community events. “Before, we were operating out of a two-bay shed basically and it was on the crest of a hill so not the safest place for the trucks to be turning in and out of.” Mr Baldwin said brigade members had organised many fundraising events to provide $80,000 to the project, which will go towards the construction of the third bay. “That has been done through many barbecues. We hold a fair once a year,” he said. The station is expected to be in operation by the middle of next year.

Cheers to new designer Eamon Riley is the toast of Gisborne. The furniture designer and maker was presented with Houzz X VIVID’s Award for Furniture Design 2019 and People’s Choice Award 2019 for his handmade Bar-Code drinks cabinet. Mr Riley, 22, said it was an honour to have received both awards. “It’s pretty crazy and unreal because the quality of all the other work that was there, it could’ve gone to anyone,” he said. “It’s such a prestigious award for emerging designers. It’s really awesome that I won in the furniture category.” Mr Riley said the inspiration for his drinks cabinet came from a barcode on the back of a whiskey bottle. “I thought it’d be a bit of a comedic idea to take the barcode and use the words in it,” he said.

“The whole facade is for it to be a whole bunch of zeros.” Mr Riley studied an associate degree in design (furniture) at RMIT. “This is the first piece out of university, it’s my first major project,” he said. “In the next few years, I hope to set up my own brand and have my own commercial range of products.” Mr Riley’s mum Yvonne said she was proud of her son’s achievements. “It’s a hard industry to get into and we’re really excited for him and just glad that he can do what he wants to do,” she said. Petrol theft

Gisborne police are appealing for information following a petrol theft in Riddells Creek on Thursday, July 11. Police have released CCTV images of a vehicle and a man they believe who may be able to assist them with their inquiries. Footy fever hits Sunbury Footy finals are around the corner and Sunbury children are getting into the kick of it. The Sunbury Blue Light Disco’s next theme is footy fever. Disco treasurer Rose Le Guier is encouraging all young groovers to come dressed in their favourite team’s colours. “We often do the footy or sport theme for our August disco because footy finals are coming up and the kids are all into it,” she said. “We’d love to see all teams there … it’s whatever you like. Sometimes we’ve seen kids there wearing other sports colours like NRL, cricket, or their local footy or sporting club colours. We love seeing the kids getting dressed up in any of our themes.”

The disco recently received a $1000 Stockland Community Care Grant which will be used to upgrade lighting and audio for future discos. “It’s the second time we’ve received a grant from them,” Ms Le Guier said. “We applied again this year to enhance our disco experience … Some of the equipment we’ve had for many years, so we could do with a bit of an upgrade.” The next Sunbury Blue Light Disco for primary school-aged pupils is on Friday, August 30, from 6-8pm at Sunbury Memorial Hall. Before I opened my barbershop in Sunbury, I had a lot of friends that lived in Sunbury and I was always there visiting them. I fell in love with the town. On a motorbike trip to Mudgee, New South Wales last year, the owner of Open Road Motorcycles and I got the idea of opening a small barbershop out the front of his Harley shop, combining my two favourite things in one. I’ve now met my future husband, who is a Sunbury local as well. We have big plans for the barbershop in the near future. What are you passionate about? The things I’m most passionate about is the barbering world, learning new skills, styles and always striving to be the best I can be. How long have you been the owner of Dagger and Rose Barbershop in Sunbury? I’ve owned my shop for one year and two months now. How has your barbershop been received by the community? Everyone I’ve met through my barbershop or

the Harley shop has been so welcoming and the community has supported my little shop more then I could ever imagine. You have decided to reach out to local sport clubs and charities to donate vouchers for haircuts at your store – how did this all come about? I was just thinking one day how can I help out or get more involved in the community and this was an idea I came up with. It’s been so amazing finding out all these charities and fundraiser events people do in Sunbury. Just shows how great this little place is. What do you enjoy most about owning Dagger and Rose Barbershop? I love that I have opened my shop out the front of Open Road Motorcycles and Grafix by Mik combining my love for Harleys, riding and art with barbering – it’s three great businesses under the one roof that really work well together. Something different that isn’t really around Sunbury or the Macedon Ranges. What would people be most surprised to know about you? Most people are surprised when I tell them I’m actually from Mackay in Queensland and didn’t grow up in Sunbury but I’m definitely a local now. I also have a love for old pickup trucks – my daily drive is a 1977 Ford F100.

Cognitive scientists believe that five kinds of brain waves function in combination to regulate the mental and emotional state. These range from high frequency patterns, called beta and gamma, to lower ranges known as the delta, theta and alpha waves. The higher ones influence levels of alertness, concentration and analysis, while the lower frequencies are more involved with creativity, relaxation and rejuvenating sleep. different binaural beats to encourage desirable wave frequencies. There is broad scientific agreement that the approach can also help some patients manage insomnia as well as cope with pain. A 2019 study found binaural beats in combination with other treatments could even assist patients with some symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Unsurprisingly, this therapy has entered the mainstream and in some corners all manner of claims abound about binaural beats. But effectiveness, scientists caution, can depend on a variety of things, from duration of treatment and its use in conjunction with other approaches, to your state of mind to begin with. So, while it may help settle you or make you more alert, merely listening to binaural beats on YouTube won’t necessarily help you beat cellulite, 13 pass exams, or even compose a symphony. SPORT Sunbury leaves its qualifying run too late A late comeback by Sunbury Kangaroos fell short in the Essendon District Football League Women’s premier division qualifying final. The Kangaroos struggled to match it with Keilor in the first three quarters and were goalless at the last break, trailing by 37 points. They responded in the last quarter with five goals, but the Blues scored two of their own to seal the 8.5 (53)-5.4 (34) win. Kangaroos captain Tylah Bell said the side didn’t show up in the first three quarters. “Keilor got on top in the midfield and in their forward line, they were moving the ball way too easy for our liking,” she said. “They were on top with the clearances and their ruck work and around the ball. “They were able to shepherd and get the easy clearances. They know how to switch and they killed us on the run.” At three-quarter time, the Kangaroos spoke about finishing the game on a high and trying to win the last quarter.

At one stage they pegged the margin back to 12 points in the final quarter. Bell said she was proud of how the group responded. She said if they had have played that way for the full game, it could have been a different result. “We spoke about it not really being out of our reach … We didn’t want to go out without scoring a goal either. “[Coach] Bevan [Green] was pretty strict on getting around the ball and getting the clearances and let the forwards do their work. “We were able to do that in the last quarter. It was an amazing last quarter from the girls but we should have shown up from the first bounce.” Teaghan Tweedly and Regina Said kicked two goals each for the Kangaroos. Jess Domkino was the Kangaroos best, spending most of the day in the ruck. The Kangaroos this week face Hillside in a knockout semi-final.

Hillside beat Burnside Heights in their elimination final, 7.6 (48)-4.5 (29). The Kangaroos won their first encounter with Hillside, while the second one was called off in the first quarter after an ambulance was called. Bell said the team was hopeful of continuing the last quarter form against Hillside. “They’re going alright at the moment and they’ve got the run going, they beat Burnside quite easily in the end. “They’re a tough competition to play against and hopefully we can bring our style of football and get the win.” Tara Murray

Leading by eight points at half-time, the Sharks had their chances to put the Bombers away, but kicked 1.9 in the third quarter. They kept that momentum going in the last quarter, kicking away to a 9.22 (76)-5.10 (40) victory. Kayne Murphy, who kicked two goals, was named the Sharks best. By Tara Murray The Sunbury Kangaroos aren’t getting carried away, despite a 96-point win against second-placed Burnside Heights at the weekend. The battle between the top two teams in Essendon District Football League division 2, looked anything but. Kangaroos’ coach Anthony Leydin said it wasn’t the prettiest game of football, but they got the job done. “It was an arm-wrestle in the first half,” he said. “It was pretty similar to last time we played them, but in different conditions. “There was some signs midway through the second quarter that it would turn out that way again. “We put our heads down. It wasn’t pretty footy by both teams, but we did what we had to do.” The Bears took a 10-point lead into the first break but the Kangaroos slowly lifted and had the game on their terms by the end of the first half. The second half was all the Kangaroos, they kicked 14 goals to two, to win 23.19 (157)-9.7 (61). Leydin said the Bears struggled late in the game, with injuries leaving them without a bench for most of the second half. They were also without full forward Josh Covelli. The Kangaroos were missing Josh Burgess, Brad Slater and Mick Kilty. Lachlan Baddeley was 50-50 all week, making the decision on Friday night to play. It paid off, he kicked five goals for the match. “It was a fantastic effort,” Leydin said. “He and Michael Spooner [four goals] held up the forward line for most of the day.” Leydin said those who had stepped up and filled the roles in the forward line had done a good job. He said there would be some selection dilemmas when those other players return. Leydin said it was a toss-up for best on ground between big man Brenton Sutherland and midfielder Tie Cuffe. Both have been among the Kangaroos best players this season. “Tie was in everything,” he said. “He set it alight and provided that run and carry. He gave a bit around the packs. “Bogut [Sutherland] was one out in the ruck all day.” The win does nothing for the Kangaroos finishing position, with the undefeated side having secured top spot two weeks ago. Leydin said the focus now was on making

The Kangaroos took control early and were able to build the lead throughout to come away with a 45-35 win. The win is the Kangaroos third of the season. All the other results went as expected, with finals-bound Rupertswood, Romsey, Macedon and Wallan having solid wins against lower ranked sides.

Playing finals for the first time since 2013, the Kangaroos division 2 side pushed Craigieburn all the way in their knockout semi-final. Jayden Mercieca converted from the spot to give Sunbury the win. Sunbury sits 10th on 19 points. In state league 4 west, Gisborne lost 3-2 to Melbourne City. Jets hang on to keep finals hopes alive Sunbury Jets managed to hold off a strong second half comeback by the Bulleen Boomers to progress to the next round of the Big V men’s division 1 finals. The Jets came out firing in the first half and led by as many as 22 points, but that lead quickly evaporated in the third quarter, with the Boomers outscoring them 24-6. With the game and their season on the line, the Jets responded, going on to win 90-82. Jets coach Ryan Addison said for parts of the game they showed the basketball that had held them in good stead all season. “We got the ball moving and made good leads in offense and we got the defensive rotation working. “They threw some different things at us. They tried to make someone else shoot besides Ish [Sanders] which we were able to handle.” Addison said they expected the Boomers

to come back at them in the second half but the Jets were slow to adjust to the changes the Boomers had made in the third quarter. He was confident though that they could respond late in the game. “They got it down to four points at the end of the third,” he said. “We’ve had times this year we’ve had to hold on to get wins. We haven’t necessarily had the high scoring wins. “It was good to hold on to the lead down the stretch. “We stuck with our style of basketball.” All five Jets starters scored double figures – Sanders leading the way with 26 points. The Jets are hopeful that Joel Jeffrey will return from injury this weekend. The Jets face Shepparton Gators in a best of three series over the next two weekends, with a grand final spot on the line.

Addison said it will be a good test against the Gators. “They’re the only team we haven’t beaten this year,” he said. “I’m fairly confident we can beat them, both times we haven’t been at full strength. “Last time we lost to them by a point.” The Jets’ women’s side will start their finals campaign this weekend. Second half blitz seals victory By Tara Murray Sunbury Lions’ strong form continued with the side claiming its sixth win in a row in the Ballarat Football League. The form team of the competition, the Lions produced the goods in a low scoring affair against another finals hopeful, Darley. There was just three goals scored in the first half, with the Lions leading by 10 points. Not for the first time this season, the Lions found another gear in the second half at home. This time they were able to run away to a 9.10 (64)-2.9 (21) win. Lions coach Travis Hodgson praised the defensive efforts from the group. “It was a really good win for us,” he said. “We’ve been playing some good football and this was an acid test for us. “Round one they kicked 13 goals against us. I’ve touched on it before, the improvement has come from that end and we’re a fair bit harder to score on.” Hodgson said the game was played at a finals intensity early on, with neither side wanting to give an inch. He said he thought his team probably had the better of it in the first half. “We brought a lot of pressure and denied Darley’s uncontested marks and it was good to slow them down. “It was an arm-wrestle in the first half and I thought we could have been further ahead. “If we had been cleaner in the second quarter, the margin would have been bigger.” Known for their strong second halves, the Lions were full of confidence at the break and it was reflected in their performance. Dylan and Jack Landt, and Jack Sheahan kicked two goals each for the Lions.

It was three of the Lions’ home grown youngsters that impressed Hodgson the most. “Jayden Eagles was super in the ruck and Lachie Bramble hurt them on the outside with his run and carry, breaking through the lines,” he said. “Daylan Kempster, back from a hamstring injury, was unpassable at half-back. “Daylan and Jayden are only 22, while Bramble is only 21. They are all Sunbury juniors and it’s pleasing that we can play our own kids and they are doing so well.” Alik Magin, who is amongst the best most weeks, was another standout.
