Parking permit call By Jessica Micallef A Sunbury business owner is calling on Hume council to introduce carparking permits for business people. The business owner, who wished to remain anonymous, has been left fuming after the council switched five all-day parking spaces to two-hour parking in the Barkly Street off-street carpark. “It’s just impossible for people who have businesses on O’Shanassy Street to get a park and park your car for a day at work – you just can’t do it,” the business owner said. “The parking was originally for the staff, for people who have businesses.”
A Kyneton bakery is best in the pie business. Country Cob Bakery has claimed the title of Australia’s Best Pie 2019. The bakery’s caramelised pork and pepper pie took out the top spot in this year’s Australia’s Best Pie and Pastie Competition, hosted by the Baking Association of Australia. Ryan Khun, who owns the bakery with his brother Chan, said he was thrilled his bakery had received the honour of Australia’s best pie two years a row. “I’m very excited and proud of the whole team and everyone feels incredible again because we won last year … it’s unbelievable,” he said. “We won this year for the caramelised pork and pepper pie – it was judged Australia’s best pie, also Australia’s best gourmet pie. “Then we have the curry scallop which is the seafood pie and was also Australia’s best seafood pie.” Ryan said the secret to the best pie was the passion that goes into making it. “It’s lots of love, lots of care in the production, lots of practice and passion,” Ryan said. “We’ve got a very good front team and back team – everyone is working together, willing to share ideas. “Before we send it to the competition, my team is the real judge. They tell us ‘something is missing in there so you need to add more of this or add more of that’ so we get everyone’s ideas and put it in the pie, otherwise we can’t have a good pie. I can’t do it without them.” Ryan said he already has his sights set on next year’s competition.

The business owner said the switch to two-hour parking was “screwing over businesses”. “There’s really nowhere you can go. The surrounding streets are full of cars, there’s really nowhere to park unless you park many streets away.” The business owner wants a permit system so business people can park all day in time-based parking spots. “Have an allocation for people who run businesses in Sunbury,” he said. “For people going in to the shops, they don’t need all day parking – not even an hour.” In reponse to Star Weekly questions about the two-hour parking and potential for a permit system, Hume sustainable infrastructure director Peter Waite said the parking restrictions were introduced on May 15 to “manage the demand for parking by encouraging turnover of spaces in higher traffic areas”. “Five additional two-hour parking spaces have been provided in lieu of all day spaces in the Barkly Street off-street carpark,” he said. “In addition, two unrestricted spaces were converted to one disabled parking space. “All residents and visitors are encouraged to observe parking restrictions throughout our city. Parking infringements of $50 apply for staying longer than permitted. “These changes are in line with the Sunbury Town Centre Local Traffic Area Management endorsed by council on June 25, 2018.”

Doof the dog is thought to be part great dane and part bull terrier – but he is definitely all heart. Doof ’s owner, Tania Smith, found him at a pound, discovering that his previous owner, a pig hunter, had mistreated him. Ms Smith said Doof was in need of some tender loving care. “I don’t know what they did … he was in a horrible state and still was when I paid $355 for him,” she said. “He was skin and bone, he was 19 kilograms.” Once in the care of Ms Smith and partner Steve Smith in Kyneton, Doof started to show signs of leg problems. “It probably took a month and then we saw the movement,” she said. “Within another month, it was really bad. “I thought it was heredity but it had nothing to do with it. It had to do with the fact he had broken his legs and no one had fixed them. So when he gained weight, that pressure of the extra weight gain was re-breaking them.” Ms Smith said Doof ’s past had clearly traumatised him to the point where he was cautious about meeting people. “It took a month before he let Steve touch him,” she said. “He’s clearly been beaten. “He’s a really happy and really good-natured dog in all other instances apart from this fear.” Doof has had surgery on his right front leg, but his front left leg also needs an operation. “The vet says it’s weakening and [is] the next priority,” Ms Smith said. She has started a GoFundMe page to help pay for Doof ’s surgery, which would cost about $5000. She has also organised a new and used horse gear market for Saturday,

Drivers heed drink, drug law Nearly 20 drivers a day, on average, were caught breaking laws on Macedon Ranges roads during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Police officers were out in full force on Victorian roads during the long weekend as part of the statewide Operation Regal. Police recorded 58 traffic offences on Macedon Ranges roads, including 25 speeding drivers, 10 drivers driving an unregistered vehicle and three vehicle impoundments. Police conducted 800 breath tests and 52 drug tests on Macedon Ranges roads, but no drivers were caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol Sergeant Peter Wall said he was pleased with motorists for not driving under the influence. “Our main target was concentrating on drugs and alcohol, and then distracting offences and speeding offences and targeting the main arterial roads in relation to people moving about on their long weekend holiday,” he said. “So for the Macedon Ranges, that’s primarily the Calder Freeway. “We’re still disappointed in relation to the high-speed intercepts that were detected over the weekend, ending in the impounds of three vehicles.” More than 8976 traffic offences were detected across Victoria during Operation Regal. Kyneton kinder signs up A Kyneton kindergarten is embracing a sign of the times. Lady Brooks Kindergarten will teach Auslan to children in its kindergarten program until 2022. Lady Brooks Auslan educator Sarah Buchanen said it was important for children to learn sign language, especially at a young age. “It’s an expressive language,” she said. “It’s great to be able to express themselves and it’s a very visual communication – simple to pick up and it’s a very good language. “It helps develop and express their language and pick up gesturing and gesturing through sign and it helps them connect to the outside world with all different people.
“I am very pleased to be involved with this new, exciting program here.” The kindgarten is one of 160 across Victoria that will deliver the language program, which is part of a $17.9 million investment into the Early Childhood Language Program from the state government. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said it was great to see the program at Lady Brooks Kindergarten. “Learning an additional language at kinder has many benefits, including increased reading, writing and problem-solving skills and strengthened brain development,” she said. Reserve honour for Sunbury icon By Jessica Micallef A move to name a reserve in the Rosenthal Estate in Sunbury after a well-known community identity is a step closer to reality. Born and raised in Sunbury, Angela Millett (nee Potts) married local farmer Thomas Millett in 1964. Together they raised seven children in Rosenthal. Ms Millett was an active volunteer, dedicating her time to schools, sports groups and other community events and initiatives in Sunbury.
She died on January 16, 1991, aged 53 after a long battle with cancer. The Rosenthal estate is being developed by the Millett family business TF & A Millett Pty Ltd. In February, Hume council received a proposal from Urban Design and Management on behalf of Ms Millett’s family to name a reserve after her. However, the Office of Geographic Names advised that there was a park nearby named Thomas Millett Park, so the name Angela Millett Park would not be suitable.

Urban Design and Management has since proposed naming the park the Angela Potts Park. At a council meeting last Monday, Cr Jack Medcraft put forward a motion to consult the public about naming the reserve Angela Potts Park. The motion was carried.
“This is a great initiative we are doing here on behalf of the Millett family,” he said. “She’s lived all her life there and unfortunately she died at a very young age. “The Millett name is a name well known in Sunbury. “They now have one of the premium estates being developed which has been very popular. “I think the Millett family should be congratulated on presenting a top-class development … it is great to see the mother is recognised in this way.”

Exhibition all stitched up Fashion and farm have come together for a flamboyant exhibition. The Kyneton Museum will be host to the Ag Art Exhibition – a showcase of garments created from farming materials repurposed into fashionable and unique clothing. Museum supervisor Alison Buchanan said the exhibition showed everything from “hay baling twine to sheep ear tags”. “It’s all created into amazing hats and incredible interesting garments,” she said. “We’ve got hats, dresses, shoes – some really interesting, wild creations.” The garments on show are direct from the catwalks of the Elmore Field Days – an annual three-day agricultural event. “Every year they have a competition called
Ag Art Wear and it’s during the Elmore Field Days,” Ms Buchanan said. “We’ve got children’s workshop that’s coming up on July 4 during the school holidays where children are encouraged to bring in some old shoes that they’re not using any more. “We’ve got materials we are supplying and what they’re going to be able to do is make up a new set of shoes.” Then shoes will be on display in the museum for the duration of the exhibition. Stories from the heart Warm up this winter with a storytelling evening. Dromkeen Homestead will host three open mic evenings for locals to share their stories. Homestead owner Bernadette Joiner said the winter series will be held on the third Friday of each month. “It’s an open mic evening and … people … just share their stories,” she said. “People have five minutes with the microphone and it’s based on the night’s theme.” The theme of the first evening is ‘second chance’. “They’re just simple, from the heart, stories and we want people to be in the story as well,”
Ms Joiner said. “I’ve got my first five minute story and it’s a memory of something to do with my grandfather where he had a second chance at something.” Ms Joiner said memories of her grandfather telling her stories during her childhood were the inspiration behind this winter’s event. “He was a great storyteller and he would share stories from his childhood.” The events are on June 21, July 19 and August 16 at 1012 Gisborne-Kilmore Road, Riddells Creek. Gisborne had a day to forget in FFV state league 4 west on Saturday against Surf Coast. The Sky Blues were in trouble, 3-0 down at half-time, and it only got worse. Surf Coast scored another seven goals in the second half to run away with a 10-0 win. The loss caps off a tough week for the Sky Blues, with coach Danny Ciantar resigning. In a statement on the club’s Facebook page, the club thanked Ciantar for his efforts over the past 18 months. Meanwhile, Sunbury United lost 3-1 to Upfield in state league 3 north-west.
By Tara Murray It was a strong return to the court for the Sunbury Jets in Big V women’s state championship division. After a weekend off due to the Queen’s Birthday holiday, the Jets continued their good form with a solid 89-72 win. Jets coach Kennedy Kereama said he was happy with the performance. He said they had used the week off as chance to get the players a bit of break. “You always risk coming out of a break losing that momentum [but] there wasn’t much to be disappointed with,” he said. The Jets led by four points at quarter-time, before blowing the game open in the middle two quarters. They led by 23 points at the last break. Kereama said they were strong at both ends of the court. “Our defence was certainly where we needed to be,” he said. “Our offensive was good and we shot at a high clip from the perimeter for most of the game.” Orla O’Reilly top scored with 22 points as four players finished with double figures. All players got on the court. “You coach to win first and then you look for opportunities for other players to be rewarded,” Kereama said. “As much as you can, you want to get everyone on the court and qualify them for finals.” The win is the Jets eighth in a row, placing them second on the ladder. Kereama said they weren’t getting too far ahead of themselves as they search for a fourth straight championship. “There’s still a lot of basketball to come,” he said. “A lot can happen. If we keep tracking the way we are, we will be OK.”

The Sunbury Lions fell just short of upsetting East Point in the Ballarat Football League. Travelling to Ballarat for a second straight week, the Lions were again slow out of the blocks, trailing by 16 points at the main break. The Lions reduced that to three points at the last break. The two teams went goal for goal in the last, with the Kangaroos holding on to win 9.18 (72)-9.13 (67). Alec Goodson kicked three goals for the Lions, with midfield duo Mitch Conn and Lachie Bramble again the Lions’ best. The Lions sit seventh on the ladder. The Lions A-grade netballers suffered their first loss of the season. SPORT Under-19s show tonne of skill By Tara Murray Rupertswood’s under-19 netball team continues to make history, notching up its 100th straight win in the Riddell District Netball League. Since the introduction of the under-19 competition, the Sharks have won every match they’ve played, including five premierships. On Saturday, the Sharks defeated Romsey 46-15 to make it win 100. Sharks coach Di McCormack, who has been the head coach of the netball program since the start, said she could have never have imagined the success the side would have. “It’s the monkey off the back now,” she said of win 100. “It’s been haunting us all year. “They were all pretty excited and they’ve all been waiting for it.” McCormack said the pleasing thing about the under-19 side, was the number of players that had stepped up into their other grades. Across the six years, 51 individual players have played in the under-19 team, with basically a brand new team each year. McCormack said they try and teach the same things throughout all the grades. On Saturday, four of the A-grade team, Georgia Hellyer, Hannah Keane, Niamh Vahland and Holly Keating, had all started in

the under-19 side. “Georgia Hellyer played 67 of those [100] games and she’s gone from being in under-19s and working her way up,” McCormack said. “Niamh Vahland captained the [under-19] team for two years, as well as playing 50 games. “In every grade we’ve got girls who started
in our 19s. If we took them out of our sides, we wouldn’t have much left on. “The reason we’ve been so dominant, is we’ve got girls who have good basic skills, they understand structures and they play for each other.” As well as the premierships, some of the

We got a few guys back, which meant the reserves were also at full strength. “They’re playing off spots now.” The Thunder took time to get into their game plan, but after half-time were really good. Hopkins said the game plan was simple. “For us, it was about not letting them get the ball,” he said. “We put pressure on and then were able to get back to our running style of play. “Them not having the ball, put them off their game and we were able to control the game after half-time.” Lachlan Wilkins was the only multiple goalkicker for the Thunder, with two goals. Hopkins said Diquan Williams was best on ground for his performance on Josh Covelli. “He kept him to three goals,” he said. “No one can body-on-body with him. We wanted someone to run and jump and create second efforts when the ball hit the ground. “When it hit the deck, he [Williams] was away.” Skipper Lucas Shaw and star Kamen Ogilvie were the other standouts. The win leaves the Thunder sitting in sixth, one game outside the top four. Hopkins said some mid season recruits had also boosted their stocks. Kane Murfett has played two games since crossing from Jacana, while Liam Smith made his debut at the weekend. She said the group wanted to keep the winning streak going. “We’ve got some players who are 14 and they’re holding their own. “I would say the oldest would be 17, if we’re lucky. “For those girls like Reese Sutton, Holly Barrett and Abbey Lambert to come up through under-17s, where they are still playing, to get on and play in the under-19s is great. “As a club we are very proud of all of their achievements and wait for the next milestone they can achieve, which hopefully will be to win the 2019 grand final which will make it six in row.” Meanwhile, the Sharks A-grade side defeated Romsey, 53-36, to remain undefeated. Romsey had its best win of the Riddell District Football League season, holding off Rupertswood on Saturday. After dropping a thriller to the Sharks earlier this season, the Redbacks made sure it didn’t happen a second time. There wasn’t much between the two teams all day. The Sharks took the early ascendancy in the last quarter, but couldn’t convert on the scoreboard. The Redbacks regained the lead late, and despite a last ditch shot at goal by the Sharks, hung on to win 11.8 (74)-9.8 (62). Redbacks coach Corey O’Sullivan said the game was a real finals-type game. “It was hard, it was contested and it was tough, like finals football,” he said. “For us to fight back showed a lot of character. We’re really pleased as a group to get the job done.” O’Sullivan admits that had the Sharks converted early in the last quarter it could have been a different result. “I really thought there were times Rupertswood looked so dangerous and hard to stop. “[But] When you stick strong and believe in your team and that you can get it done, you hope things go your way and they did.” O’Sullivan said everyone stood up when they needed to. Jack Jedwab kicked four goals after moving from centre half-back at half-time. Blake Henderson, Jaidyn Caruana and Nathan Blair were the other standouts. The win keeps the Redbacks sitting atop the ladder. “The challenge for us now is doing the little things well, the team things well and the unselfish things well,” O’Sullivan said. Cannon takes her best shot By Tara Murray A permanent move to the backline has paid off for Calder Cannons’ Felicity Theodore. After an up and down start to the NAB League season, Theodore was moved to the backline, where she has felt right at home. “I started the year off roughly,” she said. “I had played a couple of games in the backline in my first year with the Cannons and then moved to forward and in the middle. “I find the backline easier … everything just clicked.” It was in the backline that Theodore proved to be a key plank in the Cannons run to the NAB League grand final. “It was such an exciting experience for the younger girls [playing in the grand final],” she said. “It was an opportunity to play a few more games together.” The grand final signalled the end of four years at the Cannons for Theodore. She said it was bittersweet to finish her time there. “I was with them when it was a youth girls academy,” she said. “When I first started, the talent was nuts and it has grown and grown. It’s more professional.” Theodore, who also plays for the Sunbury Lions, has earned a spot in the initial Vic Metro squad for the under-18s championships. She said she was already seeing the difference in skill level being with the best Vic Metro players. “The training has stepped up.
“The intensity is a lot quicker and I’m already feeling myself improve.” Theodore said it would be an amazing experience to make the final squad, which will be announced next week. With her Cannons time over, Theodore is training with the Essendon VFLW side. She had her first proper training session with the side last week. “They definitely have bigger bodies and are so much smarter, I can’t wait. “I’ll see what happens and I’ll really push myself.” Football wasn’t always Theodore’s number one sport, having come from a basketball family. It was actually a basketball teammate, Carlton young gun Madison Prespakis, who suggested that Theodore try football. “Maddy used to play with me and she said I should come across to football for one session. “Mum didn’t like it at first. I did one session and I loved it, football is a better sport for me.” Theodore looks up to Prespakis on the football field. “She is amazing and playing with her was just inspiring. You never knew what she could do.” Theodore said it would be awesome to join Prespakis in the AFLW next year. “I’m looking forward to improving my game and that would be amazing if it was to happen.”
