Heart of the Ranges By Jessica Micallef Two Macedon Ranges residents have been appointed as officers of the Order of Australia in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Gisborne resident Elaine Millar, 79, and Kyneton resident Eric Scoble, 68, were recognised for their community service. Ms Millar said the honour was unexpected. “I do feel very humbled about it,” she said. “I’ve been a community person, but I never ever in my wildest dreams imagine I’d get an award for anything I’ve done.” Ms Millar has been a member of Saint Paul’s

“It all started when I lost my mum years ago to cancer,” he said. “The daffodil is the symbol of cancer and that was the spark that ignited something in me.” Mr Scoble said community involvement made him feel “very proud”. Mr Scoble is also widely involved in the Kyneton sports community. He is a life member of the Kyneton Junior Soccer Club, was a secretary for the Kyneton Cycling Club and has been part of Kyneton Little Athletics for 20 years. “I got two young lasses into the Oceania Games in high jump,” he said. “We used to do a lot of fundraising to make everything possible.”

One of Ms Millar’s “biggest loves” is the Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Box Appeal, filling up shoeboxes with Christmas gifts for disadvantaged children. “I get more joy out of that than anything and I am hoping I can continue with that,” she said. Mr Scoble wears Kyneton on his sleeve. “Everything I’ve ever done for Kyneton, I’ve done it from the heart, not for the glory of it,” he said. “I was born and bred in Kyneton.” Mr Scoble has been a member of the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival for nearly four decades and has been the event’s president since 2013.

It’s a great place to meet people. I was a participant in anything that was happening at the church.” Ms Millar is a reporter and proof reader for the Gisborne Gazette. She has been raising money for Vision Australia for two decades.

Rescuer slams kangaroo attacks By Jessica Micallef A Macedon Ranges animal rescuer is calling for tougher penalties on animal cruelty. Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network rescuers were called to attend a female kangaroo with an arrow lodged in her upper body in Greenvale on June 1. Rescuer Manfred Zabinskas said the team came across a male kangaroo with identical injuries during the rescue. “The biggest problem is … there’s no justice. No one gets prosecuted, it’s just too easy,” he
said. “We just need to keep reporting this stuff so that it gets heard.” Mr Zabinskas said the female kangaroo was traumatised and rescuers weren’t able to tranquilise or rescue her when they were first called out. “The next day they went out again [and] while they were looking for her, they found another kangaroo with an arrow. “We were able to slowly and carefully sneak up. He was a little bit more approachable.” Mr Zabinskas said the female kangaroo was located on Monday.
“The arrow that was through her chest had broken somehow … the broken end of the arrow did manage to enter her lungs,” he said. “She was … euthanised. She had a large joey in her pouch and he was saved.” Mr Zabinskas said the female kangaroo’s injuries were a lot older than the male kangaroo, suggesting the recent attacks were not “isolated”. “This is an ongoing thing … someone’s out there shooting at kangaroos,” he said. “It appears that there may be other kangaroos … A joey was rescued from the pouch of the injured that have been attacked the same way.” kangaroo. Women have powered together to build new skills. The Romsey Neighbourhood House Women’s Chainsaw Group provides women with the opportunity to learn about chainsaw use and emergency safety. House co-ordinator Michelle Balthazar said the three week course was “highly intensive”. “Women undertook accredited training in chainsaw use,” she said. “Another component was emergency fire prevention and resourcing women in high fire prone areas to be able to know what to do in terms of preparation and protecting their homes. “They learnt how to start a fire pump, operate a generator [and] tying knots on trailers. “The final component of the course was putting those skills in action with a chainsaw sculpting weekend.” Ms Balthazar said the women felt “incredibly

Man killed
A man has died in hospital following a car collision in Kyneton last month. It is believed a Ford sedan was travelling on Powlett Street when it collided with a van at the intersection of Piper Street about 1pm on Friday, May 31. The 92-year-old man was taken to hospital and died on June 2. The driver of the van was uninjured.

Romsey through a lens Lights, camera, action – the Romsey Get Snapping Photo Competition is back for another year. Event organiser Sue Kirkegard said the competition – now in its second year, was a chance for people to capture the simple things that Romsey offered. “It is to get people to share the things that they enjoy about Romsey [and] about life in Romsey,” she said. “Whether it’s going to the footy, or doing the gardening or walking up the street – it’s a chance for us to share that.” Ms Kirkegard said the young and old were all encouraged to take part in the competition.
“Any person in Romsey can participate – you don’t need to be a photography geek,” she said. “We’ve got a special prize for primary school children – we’ve got a $50 primary school prize. “If you are getting up to nine or 10, when you are up to the pre-high school stage, you’re quite confident in your abilities. “We had an 11-year-old last year who was highly commended for her pictures.” Cash prizes of up to $250 will be up for grabs. Coliban Water Authority has been given a licence exemption by Environment Protection Authority Victoria for an emergency discharge of treated waste Class B recycled water from its Kyneton Waste Water Treatment Plant to the Campaspe River. The discharge started on Friday, May 31 and will continue until further notice. Further exemptions will need to be assessed by EPA if Coliban requests the discharge of Class C water from the treatment plant.
Skate park upgrades
The skate park at Sunbury Recreation Reserve is being upgraded. Hume council has appointed Grind Projects Pty Ltd to improve the park. The project will expand on the existing skate park and introduce a range of new skill elements for beginner, intermediate and advanced users. New shopping centre opens By Jessica Micallef The new Rosenthal Shopping Centre in Sunbury will officially open its doors to customers this week. The centre boasts a 5100 square metre retail space with a Woolworths supermarket and a range of specialty stores including BWS, Rosenthal Tatts, Sunbury Mobiles, OBs Charcoal Chicken & Kebabs, Catch 90 Fish N Chips, Inside Out Hair, Victoria’s Pizza & Beyond, Will’s Nails and Brown Cow Cafe. There will be 270 car parking spots, with
disabled and parent parking provided. Construction on the $27.5 million project started in September last year. Sunbury Woolworths store manager Alain Gradidge said the new store put fresh food and convenience “at the forefront” with an in-store bakery and a new deli and seafood department. “We are offering our customers a friendly neighbourhood food store that makes grocery shopping easy with convenient new features such as pick-up, where they can order the shopping online and then pick it up at a time that suits them, and a new bag-and-bake
offering from our deli and fish market, to help create simple yet delicious family meals,” he said. Grand opening celebrations will commence on Wednesday, June 12 and will continue across following weeks. There will be children’s entertainment with appearances from Marvel characters Iron Man and Captain America and Nickelodeon’s PAW Patrol’s Fire Dog Marshal. The shopping centre is located at 90 Vineyard Road, Sunbury and will open on June 12 from 8am.

Woodend a winner Woodend Newsagency is celebrating its first division one TattsLotto prize in 10 years, after a Woodend man won $1.2 million. Agency owner Darren Cahill said his team was excited to have sold the latest division one prize. “We’ve sold three division one-winning entries over the past 25 years but it has been about 10 years since our last division one win,” he said. “We’ll be sharing the news with our customers and they will be so excited and amazed to hear we’ve sold a winner. “We are so excited for our winner and we hope they do something great with their prize. “It is nice to give back to someone who is a regular customer of Woodend Newsagency.” The regular player, who wished to remain anonymous, received a life-changing call on June 3, notifying him of his $1.2 million win.
He said he didn’t expect to wake up $1.2 million richer. “It feels terrific to know I am now a millionaire,” he said. “The news is just very good. I’ve won a few division three and division two prizes but it feels very good to have scored division one.” He held one of three division one-winning entries across Australia. Food waste for thought Sunbury Primary School pupils are doing their bit for the environment. School volunteer De’arne Houston said a Gardening Australia segment inspired them to start their War on Waste Wednesday program – a food scrap and soft plastic collection service. “We needed to get some more scraps to make compost for our kitchen [garden] and it was just a perfect opportunity to get scraps in our school community so that we can make more compost,” she said. Families are given a bucket to fill up with food scraps. They then drop off their full bucket for the “garden warriors” to sort through. “It’s a swap-and-go-system,” Ms Houston said. “Really good scraps will go to the chooks

and then the next scraps go to our worms and then all the mushy yucky stuff goes into our composting system.” Since the initiative started a month ago, the school believes it has diverted more than 100 kilograms of waste from landfill. Ms Houston said the children had embraced the initiative with open arms. “For the first week we only had a handful of scraps handed in and then it’s doubled every week from that,” she said. Families can also drop off soft plastics to the school’s War on Waste collection point. “It is a way to create a conversation at home about food waste.” Jessica Micallef

It’s hosing down with rain, I arrive at an unusually (for me) late, post-noon hour and the crowds are building. But all becomes good and fine when contemplating and eating my medium lamb souvlaki ($12). This is excellent stuff – good, ungristly meat and all the usual souvlaki bits in good order. I return the following Friday and enjoy a much earlier and sunnier outlook. This time I go the medium chicken – also priced at $12. Now, chicken souvlaki – or doner or shish – is not normally my style, but journalistic duty requires variance from the previous week. But I’m happy as this, too, is a winner. If, in both cases, I have wished for more flame-induced salty crustiness, I understand that souvlaki is a dice roll of luck and timing. Continued visits to The D’s Souvlaki for this lad’s Friday lunch are a safe bet.

Could it be? That the parched desert that is eating in Keilor Park – and surrounding the Star Weekly office, in particular – is giving way to new blooms? Yes – it is so. In coming weeks, CTS will chronicle a sooper dooper Greek bakery/cake shop that has opened up in Keilor Park – and within walking distance from my office. In the meantime, The D’s Souvlaki has taken up residence in our resident brewery. We’ve been meaning to try The D’s souvlakis for a while, as they’re apparently highly regarded. But its long-time location on Matthews Avenue, over in Airport West, proved tricky for us Yarraville boys – no lunch service and a night-time drive too long when similar options abound closer to home. But the D’s crew is now on the same block as Star Weekly Weekly, lunch and dinner is being served on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays – and the the joint has hit the ground running. Indeed, it seems this classy souvlaki operation is an even better fit for the area and its brewery than the previous tenants, the Houston’s barbecue team. The D’s Souvlaki is tapping into the plethora of Keilor Park and environs workers. As well, the D’s move to a new location has pulled regular night-time customers right along. The menu is a simple, compact list absent of such accessories as chips. That’s fine by us.

SPORT Back in top flight, Kyneton vows to work on its A game Kyneton is showing it’s up to the challenge of Bendigo Netball League A grade. After not having an A-grade team last season, the Tigers are fifth after eight rounds and showing positive signs. Tigers coach Dianne Guest-Oakley said the first win this season was having an A-grade team back on the court. The club has four netball sides this season, in contrast to one and half when Guest-Oakley took over as coach. She said the A-grade players were enjoying the challenge of a higher level, with most of them playing in the Tigers’ A-reserve premiership last season. “We’re now at that part of the season where it’s time to get serious,” she said. “I can see the attitudes changing … they’re training a bit harder.” Guest-Oakley said she thought the side could
play finals, but that it was a matter of the players believing in themselves. “I think we could be contenders if we knuckle down and train hard,” she said. “They can do it if they want to.” She said there were a few areas of weakness in which improvement was required if they were to close the gap on the top sides – including game starts. Guest-Oakley said they were finding themselves down early in games. “It’s been a bit of a struggle with being the only coach,” she said. “I’m coaching four teams and girls are going on to the court without a pre-match talk. It’s something I have to change. “Our first quarters are non-existent. We’re having to play catch up and we’re exhausted by the end. You can’t do that at this level in first quarters, let alone any quarters.”
On Saturday, the Tigers lost 56-35 to third-placed Eaglehawk. Guest-Oakley said it was a tough day that included the absence of Brooke Mangan, out with concussion, and Tylah Marchbank, who will miss the rest of the season after hurting her ACL. “There was a couple of injuries last week and it has brought them all down a bit,” she said. “Brooke is a centre court player and she is the drive down the court. We didn’t have that on Saturday. It affected the side.” In other matches, Gisborne got some revenge against Sandhurst in the grand final rematch. The Bulldogs won 53-28. Romsey win a tough test By Tara Murray Romsey is quickly finding itself as the team to beat in the Riddell District Football League. Having lost just one game heading into the weekend, the Redbacks were keen to test themselves against the undefeated Diggers Rest side. While even on the scoreboard at half-time, it was the Redbacks who fired all the shots in the second half. An 8.10 to 3.1 second half sealed the Redbacks best win of the season, 12.19 (91)-8.7 (55). Redbacks coach Corey O’Sullivan said the playing group stuck to the game plan. “I think you could count on one hand the number of times a side has come to Diggers and got the win in the last few years,” he said. “It’s a hard ground to win at and a hard ground to play at. “We made a concerted effort across the board.” O’Sullivan said while they trailed by three points at the main break he thought they had control of the game. He said it was a matter of sticking to their structures. “I thought we had missed some opportunities that we needed to take,” he said. “I was confident if we worked hard enough for long enough, that those scores would start to come. “We had 35 scoring shots. If you have that many scoring shots, you’re likely to come out on top.” Mitchell Jensen continued his good form, kicking four in a best on ground performance. O’Sullivan said from his perspective it was a an even team effort. “There was no standouts,” he said. “To beat Diggers at home you need 22 contributors and everyone stood up when needed.” Thomas Taylor was named the Burras’ best, but he didn’t have many other friends stand up. The win moves Romsey to the top of the table. O’Sullivan said they weren’t getting ahead of themselves. He said the difference this year to the past two, when they finished sixth on both occasions, was that the playing group understood the game plan better. “We’ve been in pretty good form throughout and the structures are standing up,” he said. “We still have to come up against some really good sides. “We still have to play Riddell twice and we think they’re a really good side, and we still play Rupo who knocked us off in round two.” In other weekend results, there were four one-sided matches. 14 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 11, 2019

Riddell was back on the winners’ list, defeating Woodend-Hesket 24.18 (162)-5.8 (38). Rupertswood had little trouble against Lancefield, winning 23.18 (156)-1.1 (7). Nick Grigg continued his good form with seven goals.
Jason Cooke kicked 15 goals as Macedon had a day out against Rockbank, winning 44.22 (286)-2.0 (12). Melton Centrals got a much-needed win, beating Broadford 18.13 (121)-4.8 (32) at Harley Hammond Reserve.
Sunbury Lions ratchet up the intensity The Sunbury Lions produced some of their best netball in more than a year and a half to overcome Lake Wendouree in the Ballarat Netball League on Saturday. The Lions’ performance was patchy at times, but coach Adam Boldiston was thrilled with how the side stepped up in the second half of the 55-36 win. “We started off pretty well and got an early lead,” Boldiston said. “The second quarter got a bit physical, especially on Shelby [Holter]. They got into her head. “I felt like we didn’t have enough intensity and weren’t letting the ball go. “Elly [Randall] was winning a lot of ball in goal keeper, but we weren’t making the most of it. I put it on the leaders at halftime.” The lead went from five goals at half-time to 17 at three-quarter time. “It was our best quarter of netball in nearly a year and half,” Boldiston said. “That set up the win.” He said the leaders stood up when required and provided support for Holter. Boldiston said that while 17-year-old Holter was rattled at half-time, he backed her in to turn it around. “At half-time I dedicated most of the time to her and talked her through it,” he said. “The second half, she got her confidence back.” Fellow shooter Amanda Cusack was another to regain her confidence. After struggling so far this season, Cusack shot 45 goals from 50 attempts. Boldiston said it was a good time for her to find some form. “She had been down in the 60 per cent range,” he said. The win is the Lions’ seventh. They are undefeated and on top of the ladder. Boldiston said the coming batch of matches, against sides that would be in the finals mix, would be crucial. This week the Lions will face East Point. Boldiston said some East Point players had watched the Lions’ match against the Lakers. “They would have seen bits and pieces in the third quarter which would have made them stand up and take notice,” he said. Sunbury celebrates as an unwelcome record is broken The Sunbury Lions road drought has ended, after defeating Lake Wendouree in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. It had been more than 12 months since the Lions had won away from Clarke Oval and more than two years since they had won in Ballarat, but that all changed on Saturday afternoon. It took the Lions a little while to get going against the Lakers, but once they did they ran away for a 16.16 (112)-10.16 (76) win after trailing by 15 points at half-time. Lions coach Travis Hodgson said the win was a relief. “It was 721 days since we had won in Ballarat,” he said. “Even though Lake Wendouree has struggled the last couple of weeks, they were pretty competitive.
“They were playing for their season. They were still hard at it and gave it a crack.” Not for the first time this year, the Lions found another gear in the second half. Even in some of their losses, they have cranked it up in the second half. On this occasion, they kicked 11 goals to three in the last two quarters. Hodgson said their midfield started working a lot harder in the second half. “I didn’t think they worked hard enough in the second quarter,” he said. “They let us down a little bit in the second quarter when we were beaten exiting the clearances. “To the boys credit they dug deep. “It took us to half way through the third quarter to get the ascendancy.” Despite a below par second quarter, the
midfield trio of Lachie Bramble, Mitch Conn and Alik Magin were named in the best. Ruckman Jayden Eales had a good game, as did first-gamer Harry Power and late inclusion Luke Goater. Both Goater and Power added something to the forward line that was missing Jack Sheahan and Jack Landt. Dylan Landt kicked four goals for the Lions, while skipper Andrew Duhau kicked three goals for a second straight week. Hodgson said they had changed Duhau’s role. “The first five rounds he was in the midfield rotation,” Hodgson said. “We changed his role and made him a permanent forward. “He provides some leadership down there.” Mick Edwards, who has started to find some
form, was reported. Dylan Featon failed to play out the match due to injury. The win moves the Lions to 4-3 and for the first time ahead of the ledger. It doesn’t get any easier with another trip to Ballarat to face East Point. “It’ll be a good test how far we’ve come,” Hodgson said. “They’re the benchmark.” Meanwhile, three Sunbury Lions players have been selected in the AFL Victoria Country senior representative squad. Sunbury star aims high By Tara Murray Sunbury’s Lily Scanlon will step on the international stage next month with some of the world’s best up-and-coming basketballers. Having first stepped on to the court after being inspired by her brother’s basketball efforts, the 18-year-old will represent Australia at a world cup for a second time next month. She was part of the Sapphires under-17 team that won bronze last year. This year she’s part of the under-19 Gems who will be looking to defy their seventh ranking and come away with a medal. Scanlon said she was excited to head to Thailand for the cup. “It’s an honour and an absolute privilege,” she said. “I can’t wait to get over there. Having played at an international level before, it’s a whole new game. “We have a pre-worlds tournament in France … we’ll be there for 10 days to get the chemistry going.”
The Gems start the cup with the toughest task – taking on the-top ranked Americans. Scanlon said it was always exciting to face the best and that she thought the Gems’ athleticism and quickness would be keys in that game and across the championships. Scanlon is one of several bottom-age players in the side, but she said age wasn’t something she thought about in making the team. “I just wanted to go out and play my game and hopefully show how I can play,” she said. “I think I did pretty well at both training camps.” Scanlon has had a big 12 months. She moved to Canberra after receiving a scholarship for the Centre of Excellence (formerly the AIS). She said the experience of being at the centre had exceeded her expectations. Canberra is a long way from the Sunbury Jets where she started her basketball career, before moving to the Bulleen Boomers. “I’m loving it, to be honest,” she said. “It was one of my goals growing up.
“It’s the best place for my basketball and being able to take it to the next level. “It’s basketball, plus all the other things of being a professional athlete as well.” She plays with the centre’s team in the NBL1 competition – and that means facing the top players in Victoria week in, week out. “It is awesome,” Scanlon said. “You’re playing against a lot of older, more experienced players. Some have played for the Opals at that higher level. You learn so much.” The point guard is this year juggling her basketball with completing year 12. She said that while it can be difficult at times, it was something she had become used to. Scanlon already has her first post-school challenge in her sights, with an American trip on the agenda for the back end of the year. “I want to go to college at a division 1 school,” she said. “I want to find the best fit for me. Hopefully, I’ll go to college for four years. “The long-term goal is to play for the Opals, playing in the WNBA.”
Gisborne was made to work hard for the points against Sandhurst in the Bendigo Football League. The Bulldogs had plenty of chances in front of goal – they had 16 more scoring shots – but were unable to put that dominance on the scoreboard. However, it didn’t matter in the long run and the Bulldogs won 14.20 (104)-12.6 (78). Pat McKenna was the standout for the Bulldogs, kicking eight goals to take his season tally to 41. He sits only behind Lachlan Sharp (60 goals) on the league’s goalkicking leader board. Ethan Minns, Matt Goodyear and Tim Walsh were the other standouts for the Bulldogs. The win, the Bulldogs’ seventh, keeps them second, four points behind ladder leaders Strathfieldsaye. It was a day to forget for Kyneton against Eaglehawk. The Tigers could only muster four behinds in the first half, as they trailed by 59 points at the main break. It didn’t get any better after half-time, with the Tigers adding just another 1.5 in a dismal display. The final score was 21.14 (140)-1.9(15). Rhys Magin was the goalscorer for the Tigers and was also named their best, along with Josh Govan and James Orr. The Tigers slip to seventh with the loss. Meanwhile, Gisborne’s Pat McKenna, Jack Scanlon, Liam Spear and Brad Bernacki have been named in Vic Country squads to take on the Victorian Amateur Football Association on July 13.
