Window on the world A Sunbury florist is doing more than providing beautiful flowers in the lead-up to Anzac Day. Irelands Florist of Sunbury has a thoughtful arrangement of Anzac photographs and memorabilia on display. Florist co-owner Fiona Bens said the display was a way for the store to pay its respects to the men and women who fought for Australia. “It’s more for the community to realise and be aware, and spend the time to think about it,” she said. “A lot of the photos that are in the window have been relatives of either myself or Annette [co-owner]. “It’s just something we like to do to make the community aware that it’s coming up and to remember.” Sunbury resident Ian Goss has provided some of his own items for the display – including a photograph of his late uncle William Hollister Goss who fought in World War I. Ms Bens said she liked to set up window displays at the florist in the lead-up to special occasions throughout the year. It’s the second year the shop has had an arrangement for Anzac Day. “Because we’ve got that great window, we just wanted to display different things that happen in the community,” she said. “Sometimes it might be an autumn window … there will be a Mother’s Day window, so the windows are just to depict the different themes or seasons.” The Anzac display will be on show at 64 Evans Street, Sunbury until April 26. ian goss and Bill tarry

Complaints about wandering livestock in the Macedon Ranges are at their highest for three years, new figures reveal. The latest data from Macedon Ranges council reveals the number of complaints made by residents regarding wandering livestock rose 14.1 per cent (from 99 complaints to 113) from December 1, 2018, to March 22, 2019, compared to the previous year. There were 88 complaints made to the council from December 1, 2016, to March 22, 2017. Acting assets and operations director Anne-Louise Linder said Macedon Ranges livestock owners needed to ensure their animals were securely confined to their properties. “While in the majority of these complaints the stock was able to be contained before accidents have occurred, unfortunately on at least two occasions traffic accidents have resulted,” she said. Areas with the highest number of complaints included Kyneton, Woodend and Darraweit Guim. But the council responded to reports of wandering livestock from right across the Macedon Ranges throughout summer. “Dry summer conditions can be a challenging time for livestock owners, but owners still must ensure that their livestock are adequately confined and that there is enough feed and water on the property to sustain them,” Ms Linder said. “Often the livestock break through fences in search for food. Fencing must be secure, regularly checked and well maintained. “When council receives a report, officers will attempt to contact the owner of the livestock to retrieve the animals and to ensure the owner makes the necessary repairs to prevent livestock escaping again. “Where livestock are wandering on roads, the first priority is to secure the stock to the nearest property to eliminate the risks to drivers and the stock.” Under the Victorian Impounding of Livestock Act 1994 and council’s local law No.10, livestock trespassing on public or private land can be impounded by council officers. Officers can also impound livestock from land when the animals are inadequately confined. Where livestock is trespassing on private land, the land owner can impound it and notify council. Wandering livestock can be reported to the council by calling 5422 0333.

Council lists state cash hopes By Jessica Micallef The Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct and the completion of the Romsey Ecotherapy Park are at the top of the council’s state budget wish list. Macedon Ranges chief executive Margot Stork said the New Gisborne sports precinct was the No.1 focus ahead of the April 30 state budget. “Council has already had a funding commitment of $11.6 million from the Victorian government for the Macedon Ranges
Regional Sports Precinct in New Gisborne, which we expect will feature in the upcoming state budget,” she said. “Among our priorities are the proposed new shared trails … from Daylesford to Woodend, Kyneton and Hanging Rock. “We would also like to be able to complete the Romsey Ecotherapy Park project, which incorporates the historic former Romsey Primary School.” Ms Stork said $1.26 million was needed to complete stage two of the park. “It will provide a unique, all-inclusive nature
space for all ages and physical abilities to explore, play, engage with and discover nature,” she said. Hume mayor Carly Moore welcomed a $1.14 billion funding commitment to upgrade Sunbury Road announced in last week’s federal budget, but said it was “simply not enough”. “While we await further details on the specifics of this upgrade, we will also continue to advocate for the delivery of the Bulla Bypass, which is the long-term solution needed to address safety and congestion in the area,” she said.
“We can only hope that the announcement of a $4 billion Urban Congestion Fund will result in funds for local projects to improve our road networks.” Ms Moore said state government funding was crucial to meet the demands of Hume’s growing population. “People move to new areas like … Sunbury to create a better life for themselves and their family,” she said. “Hume is one of Australia’s fastest growing areas – home to an estimated 232,700 residents in 2019.”

Ms Evans said Isla’s donations would make a big impact on the overall total the sports club raised.

But pint-sized Isla will be making an extra effort to help the fight against breast cancer by having her hair shaved off. Woodend and Daylesford passengers are now enjoying more frequent train services. More than 20 additional trips per week have been added to the timetable between the two towns. The new services increase the number of trips between Woodend and Daylesford from 26 to 50 per week – doubling the services from four to eight each weekday. There will also be an extra four services across the weekend. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the extra V/Line services would provide better connections for people travelling by train to and from Melbourne via Woodend, while also making it easier to get to key attractions in and around Daylesford. “These extra services will help meet the growing demand for better public transport services from the Daylesford and Woodend communities,” she said. The additional services have been welcomed by Daylesford and Trentham residents who commute to work in the CBD. The new services include an earlier and more reliable connecting coach service to Woodend train station. The first coach service will leave Daylesford at 6.25am so passengers can reach the Woodend station in time to catch the 7.19am train to Melbourne on weekdays. Making every step count By Jessica Micallef Paula Glare is keeping memories of her dear friend alive. The Sunbury resident has chosen to remember her late friend Russell Wood, who died in June last year after battling lung cancer, by raising money to help others. One of her main fundraisers is the Russ Wood Walk. “I wanted to help him out by doing fundraisers for him but he wouldn’t have it,” Ms Glare said. “He said that there were people worse off than him and [that] they needed more help than he did.” Mr Wood decided he wanted money raised for Camp Quality – an organisation that provides programs and services to develop life skills, and to strengthen the wellbeing of children growing up with cancer. “Russell believed that the kids are our future,” Ms Glare said. “We should do everything we can to help them.” In 2016, Ms Glare organised a sausage sizzle and started Steptober – a fundraising initiative to see how many steps people can take in October. She ran it again the following year. However, she wanted to take the fundraising one step further. “I asked Russell if he would mind if I did a walk in his name to raise money and awareness of Camp Quality, so in 2018, the Russ Wood Walk happened in March, raising over $12,000,” she said. Ms Glare walked from Ascot, a northern suburb of Bendigo, to Sunbury in 2018 in less than 22 hours. This year, to honour Mr Wood’s memory, she recently walked from Sunbury, along Port

Phillip Bay and back to Sunbury. Despite not being able to complete the 255 kilometre walk because of injury, Ms Glare was able to raise $2300 for Camp Quality.

Grants open for Men’s Sheds Men’s Sheds across the Macedon Ranges are being encouraged to apply for the next round of state government funding. Men’s Shed groups can submit an expression of interest for grants of up to $80,000, through the 2019-20 Men’s Shed Program. The money can go towards construction of a new shed or replacing, extending or refurbishing an existing shed. Across the Macedon Ranges, funding through the Men’s Shed Program has assisted with the development of sheds in Romsey, Kyneton and Trentham. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the grants could give men across the region the chance to contribute to their community and engage with other men in a healthy social environment. “Having somewhere to go and spend time with other men makes a huge difference to men’s health and wellbeing,” she said. “A Men’s Shed is a wonderful asset to the community. “These sheds engage men from across the region so they have the chance to come together, share their skills and catch up with their mates.” Expression of interest for the grants closes on Monday, April 29 at noon. CFA collects for the kids Macedon CFA members will be shaking their collection tins on Good Friday for the Royal Children’s Hospital. For brigade First Lieutenant Greg Snart, this will be his 21st year raising money for the appeal. He said the appeal and the hospital held a special place in his heart. “My daughter was in the Royal Children’s Hospital when she was about three-years-old,” he said. “She spent six weeks in the heart ward … the work that they do is fabulous.” Mr Snart said brigade members always looked
forward to the appeal and he asked Macedon residents to continue to give generously as they have in the past. “We are a community service, so obviously we’re not fighting fires all the time,” he said. “Anything that we can do to help [and] give back to the community – we’re just happy to collect whatever we can.” The brigade has raised $51,326 for the appeal since it began fundraising for it in 1996. Police body cameras
Macedon Ranges police are now equipped with body cameras. Police stations to have received the new technology include Gisborne, Kyneton, Lancefield, Macedon, Malmsbury, Riddells Creek, Romsey and Woodend.

Sunbury remembers Residents are invited to attend the Sunbury Anzac Day Dawn Service. The Sunbury Sub-Branch National Servicemen’s Association of Australia (Nashos), together with the Sunbury RSL, will be hosting the town’s fifth annual dawn service on April 25. Nashos president Ian Goss said the service will start at 5.30am at the Cenotaph, Stawell Street. Mr Goss said he noticed a lack of Anzac Day commemorations in Sunbury in 2015 – so he decided to organise an event that remembered
the lives lost during the wars. “We should have a dawn service,” Mr Goss said. “We never had one until 2015 and so I put my hand up to do it. “I think it’s in everybody’s interest to go have a look … and come to the dawn service.” The Sunbury RSL will be selling Anzac badges around town in the lead-up to April 25. Egg-cellent plans for Easter fun Hop in to Gisborne Village this Easter for an egg-stra special treat. The shopping centre will be transformed into an Easter wonderland with kids activities and a scrumptious competition. Top team pushes for an end to dental phobia Dental phobia or anxiety is increasing dramatically in the community, according to recent surveys – so Dr Mohit Dubey and Dr Barry Creighton are determined to banish it. Dr Mohit, Sunbury’s teamed up Victoria, to
owner and principal dentist of Horne Street Dental Group, has with Dr Barry, from Dental Sedation form a formidable partnership.
Dr Mohit explains what it means for his patients. “Our clinic is an anxious patient’s first port of call,” he says. “We will carry out a full mouth assessment then refer the patient to Dr Barry, who will perform his own medical assessment. “Then a date that works for me, Dr Barry and the patient is locked in to proceed with the required dental procedure. “Sedation, or ‘twilight anaesthesia’, and analgesia is administered slowly intravenously while Dr Barry and a registered nurse remain by the patient’s side. Dr Barry explains the procedure where by continuous monitoring of vital functions ensures heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and oxygen remain at the right levels. “And, to aid in recovery from a very light sleep, fluids are also given intravenously. “It’s not a general anaesthetic procedure and communication can take place between dentist and patient. A tap on the shoulder is all that’s needed to bring awareness.’ Dr Mohit says there are many reasons someone may feel anxious and afraid about dental work – for instance, a prior unpleasant experience at the dentist, a fear of needles or the sounds of a drill. Dr Mohit believes it’s essential that fear doesn’t

SPORT Rupo made to pay for poor kicking performance Rupertswood was left to rue a poor final quarter, as Diggers Rest ran over the top of them to secure victory in the opening round of the Riddell District Football League. Rupertswood was keen to continue its winning streak against the Burras, which dates back to 2016, and showed periods of dominance during the game. A strong third quarter had them in front heading into the final quarter, but they failed to fire a shot in the last. The Burras kicked six goals to nil in the final quarter, to win 12.12 (84)-8.8 (56). Sharks coach Nick Ash said they were made to pay for not staying focused the whole four quarters. “We played two good quarters, the first and third quarters, and then a poor second and fourth quarter. “It came down to a want and who wanted it more, they wanted it. They were better and wanted the ball better than we did.” Ash said there were few four-quarter
performances within his playing group. He highlighted John Barnard, who rucked all day, and Cam McRorie (two goals) as two players who were good all day. “There was a couple more that were three-quarter performers, but most were halves or quarters, if that.” Ash said the loss had delivered an early lesson heading into what is expected to be another close season. “I said to the boys if this doesn’t hurt, you’re not going to improve, if you don’t improve what’s the point? “So it’s up to them.” The Sharks this week face Romsey, which had a bye in round one. They will still be without three of their biggest names who all missed round one. Brett Chambers, Dean Putt and Leigh Wellington were all interested onlookers on the bench during the loss. Ash said Wellington, who recently had knee surgery, was most likely to return first.
“Leigh may be available Anzac Day or the week after if everything goes to plan. “Chambo is coming from a knee injury and will hopefully be back around round six or seven. He’s been training since the start of the year. “Putty reckons he’s one or two weeks after. It’ll depend on how he rehabs.” In other results, Melton Centrals had a day out against Rockbank, winning 35-10 (220)-0.2 (2). Dylan Weir kicked 12 goals in a best on ground performance for the winners, as half the team hit the scoreboard. Macedon won the Puka Up Cup for a second straight year, beating Riddell 11.9 (75)-8.13 (61). Sharks show their depth By Tara Murray Rupertswood put on an impressive display against Diggers Rest in the opening round of the Riddell District Netball League season. The Sharks took a few minutes to settle their nerves but then showed what they are capable of. They led by five goals at quarter-time, then extended it to seven at half-time. The Sharks scored 32 goals compared to the Burras 12 in the second half, to win 54-27. Sharks coach Di McCormack was thrilled with the first-up performance. “I’m really happy with how they settled in,” she said. “We had a game plan and they executed it really well.” The most pleasing thing for McCormack was the number of different combinations she could put on the court. Only Clare Johnson played a full game as players were rotated at every break. “I love the versatility and youth that I’ve got at the moment,” McCormack said. “I’m really happy with what we have on the court, we’ve got some depth. “We’ve still got Tilly Elliot to come back in. On Wednesday night [in Victorian Netball League] she had seven intercepts and six rebounds against City West. “Even some of the girls in the B-grade side, I’m prepared to bring them up if need be.” The Sharks had two players make their debuts for the club – Jade O’Shannessy and Rebecca Purvis. O’Shannessy, in her first foray into football netball, had the most goals on the court with 23 goals. Purvis, a last minute addition to the side, was strong in defence. Purvis hasn’t played netball the past few years, but didn’t look out of place and combined well with Johnson. “When we get some time under our belt and get some ks [kilometres] in her feet and working in with the girls, I’m really looking forward to seeing what she can do,” McCormack said. Hannah Keane, who was named the Sharks’ best, and Georgia Hellyer have both stepped up to A-grade this season adding some more youth to the side. McCormack said this season would be a development one for the likes of Hellyer, who had been playing under-19s and B-grade, but she would get opportunities on court. Romsey had the bye in round one. In other matches, Woodend-Hesket had a big first win against Lancefield. After an even first half, the Hawks took their game to another level, winning 60-34. The match was the Tigers’ first after not
having an A-grade side last season. Macedon started its title defence with a 71-38 win against Riddell. Rockbank won the closest match of the round against Melton Centrals, 43-37. Wallan was the other winner, 52-33, against Broadford.
It was a mixed weekend for the Sunbury Jets’ senior sides in the Big V competition. The women’s side suffered its second loss of the season, facing an improving Werribee Devils. The Jets were slow out of the blocks and trailed by 15 points at quarter-time. The margin was out to 21 points at the main break. The Jets reduced the margin slightly in a low scoring third quarter, then went deep into their bench in the last quarter. The Devils ran out winners, 81-62. Lynn Leaupepe, who got her first start for the Jets, top scored for the side with 22 points. Josie Stockill was the only other Jets player to score double figures. The Jets’ men’s side had mixed results, coming away with a win and loss. On Saturday night, the Jets lost to the Shepparton Gators 87-64. The Jets started slowly and never recovered, with the Gators winning three of the four quarters. Arthur Trousdell top scored for the Jets with 20 points. On Sunday, the Jets travelled to Traralgon to play Latrobe City Energy. Sunbury led by 10 points at the first break. The Energy reduced that margin over the next two quarters, with the Jets leading by three points at the last break. The Jets found another level in the final quarter to win 78-62. Cannons show control By Tara Murray The Calder Cannons had reason to smile at the weekend, with the club claiming its first win of the NAB League season. After a couple of big losses, the Cannons put in a much better performance on Saturday against the Western Jets. Cannons’ coach Ross Smith said they had learnt a lot in the first couple of the weeks of the season. “We had a tough couple of games against the top two sides. “We got belted in the first round and that was soul destroying for the boys,” he said. “Last week was a lot better. There isn’t much between the other sides though.” The Cannons were able to put those lessons into practice against the Jets. They looked to be in control for much of the game, before the Jets reduced the margin to three points at the final break. The Cannons responded and went on to win 10.14 (74)-9.8 (62). Smith said he was pleased with the output. The Cannons had more control of the ball in the middle of the ground and easily won the inside 50s. “In the first part of third quarter, the ball spent a lot of time in our forward line,” Smith said. “They then made a challenge and brought it back to within a kick. “I asked for our 19-year-olds to stand up and they did that, along with a couple of 17-year-olds who had been quiet. “I think [the Jets] they had spent their tickets in the first three quarters.” Smith said Tye Browning led the way in the final quarter, along with Daniel Mott. He said Harrison Minton-Connell was their best player all day. Jackson Cardillo, Jake Sutton, Jack Keeping and Flynn Lakey were others to show some good signs. Smith said the Cannons were happy with how the squad had come together, with a lot of talent coming through. There are four 19-year-olds in the squad, along with a good mix of 18 and 17-year-olds. They also had 10, 16-year-olds play in the practice matches. The Cannons have six players named in the Vic Metro squad, ahead of practice matches this weekend. Brodie Newman, Daniel Mott and Campbell Edwardes were all named in the initial squad, with Sam Ramsay, Curtis Brown and Harrison Jones since added. The Cannons this week face Tasmania down in Tasmania. Smith said they were looking forward to hitting the road.

While she wasn’t able to taste the ultimate success of a premiership in her first AFLW season, Sunbury’s Maddy Prespakis has been honoured for her stunning debut season. On Tuesday night, the 18-year-old was named the NAB AFLW rising star with 49 votes, 10 clear of Greater Western Sydney’s Alyce Parker. She was also named in the All-Australian team, alongside former Calder Cannons teammate and good friend Monique Conti. Prespakis has had an impressive first season, she was also named the AFLW players best first year player and was sixth in the AFLW coaches champion player of the year. Prespakis averaged just under 20 possessions a game, third in the league, and kicked six goals.

Bacchus Marsh’s Madushanka Ekanayaka and Romsey’s Taylor Stevenson have shared the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s top individual honour, the Sullivan Medal. The two finished equal on 15 votes, to win the medal. Bacchus Marsh’s Alex Porter finished third, a further two votes back. Gisborne pair Jakson Knight and Recordo Gordon rounded out the top five. Ekanayaka claimed the McIntyre Cup bowling award, while Porter took out the batting award. In a big night for the Bulls, premiership-winning captain James Lidgett was named captain of the team of the year.

Gisborne is on the hunt for a new netball coach, with Kim Bailey standing down from the role weeks out from the Bendigo Netball League season. Bailey, who took the A-grade side to the grand final in her first year at the club, sighted family and work commitments behind the difficult decision to step away from the role. Since taking on the role, Bailey has returned to her former job at AFL Goldfields which requires her to manage three netball leagues, which play on weekends. Gisborne president John Wood said they would start looking for a new coach this week.

Locals chase silverware as home town rivalry kicks off

Early bragging rights are up for grabs this weekend as the Sunbury Kangaroos and East Sunbury face off for the first time. The Sunbury Kangaroos’ move to the Essendon District Football League in the off season sets up the first ever men’s derby between two Sunbury clubs in the competition. On Saturday night at Boardman Reserve they will play for The Local Cup, sponsored by The Local Sunbury. It’s hoped the night fixture will help attract a bigger crowd. Both teams are expected to be among the contenders this season with the Kangaroos rated as the premiership favourites by the division 2 coaches and the Thunder equal second favourites. Kangaroos’ coach Anthony Leydin said they were excited about the challenge of facing East Sunbury so early in the season. “It’s something new for everyone,” he said. “It’s new for the clubs and the league itself. “Hopefully there will be a bit of interest in the match being a night match.
“We want to win the match and we won’t knock back any silverware, especially when we haven’t won anything for a while.” Leydin said they weren’t getting caught up in the hype surrounding the team. He said signs on the track were good and that there had been a better attitude from the playing group than last season. Thunder coach Glenn Hopkins said having another club from the same town was good for the club and the competition. “It is good to have that rivalry and hopefully it will get more people watching,” he said. “Our crowds are OK, but being a night game you might get players from other teams and competitions come down and watch. “There should be a strong crowd and hopefully a good match on the field.” Hopkins said opportunity to get any silverware was welcomed and that bragging rights for the best Sunbury team in the competition would be on the line. While the Kangaroos are the new boys on
the block, Hopkins knows them better than most in the EDFL, having coached against them in the RDFL. “I know a lot of the players,” he said. “Knowing the players and knowing their strengths will help me with match-ups. “But with a different coach to when I last coached against them, there is a big difference.” Hopkins said he was happy with how his playing squad was looking, with most of last year’s grand final side returning to the Thunder. Meanwhile in opening round action, the two sides had mixed results. The Kangaroos defeated the Northern Saints 17.7 (109)-12.10 (82). Mitch Streiff kicked six goals in a best on ground performance for the Kangaroos. The Thunder lost to Coburg Districts 14.10 (94)-10.13 (73). Thomas Godsell was named the Thunder’s best.
