Season to see Macedon

There’s nothing quite like a garden in autumn – and the Duneira Garden is no exception. Located in the picturesque Duneira Estate in Mount Macedon, the garden is an array of radiant reds and outstanding oranges. The 6.5-hectare garden will open for one weekend to show off its luminous autumn colours as part of Open Gardens Victoria. Property manager Pip Shannon (pictured) said autumn was one of the best times to see the garden in full bloom. “The garden is opening because of the spectacular autumn display,” she said. Duneira Garden was established in 1872 and is situated on the historic Mount Macedon Hill Station – a now heritage-listed site. “It’s classified by Heritage Victoria and we’ve got significant trees listed with them, so that’s a big deal,” Ms Shannon said. Pet controls get the nod By Jessica Micallef Strict new guidelines for pet owners will be introduced in the Macedon Ranges next year. As from January 1, 2020 all dogs must be leashed in public places except in designated off-leash areas. From July 1, all cats will have to be indoors between sunset and sunrise. At its meeting last week Macedon Ranges council approved a report aimed at responsible pet ownership. Council officer Anne-Louise Linder said the recommendations were the result of extensive community feedback since November last year.
“Officers have carefully considered the needs of all residents, those who own pets and those that don’t,” she said. “We are satisfied that the recommendations balance the needs of everyone.” Recommendations included all dogs to be under effective control of their owner or handler in public places and for dogs to be leashed in all public places except in designated off-leash areas. Dogs will also be prohibited from entering designated places for environmental reasons and the council will consider building a dog park. The dog control orders will be effective from January 1, 2020.
The report also outlined a sunset to sunrise cat curfew, prohibiting cats from entering designated public places for environmental reasons and introducing complementary cat management strategies including a low cost de-sexing and micro chipping scheme to coincide with the new curfew. Councillors agreed to defer the cat control orders to July 1, 2020 to give people the opportunity to adjust to the new requirements. There is currently no cat curfew in place in the region and dogs are not required to be on a lead in a public place, unless an area is signed. Presently, “dangerous” dogs are required to be on a lead at all times in a public place. The report stated that separate surveys
conducted in 2014 and 2017 showed support from residents to implement dog on and off-leash areas and cat curfews. More than 60 per cent of residents said yes to council designating on and off-leash areas for dogs in public places. Nearly 50 per cent of residents said yes to council introducing a cat curfew. Cr Jennifer Anderson said she was looking forward to having more happy pet owners. “And more happy residents that are bugged less by the straying cats and dogs … [we] encourage them to have pets but to have responsible pet ownership,” she said. All councillors approved all recommendations in the report.

Macedon hub wins council vote By Jessica Micallef The decision to return a Macedon house to the community has been welcomed by local supporters. The former maternal and child health facility, located at 47 Victoria Street, has been unused since 2016. The Victoria Street Neighbourhood House Working Group has long campaigned for the site to be transformed for community use. Its wishes were granted last week when Macedon Ranges council agreed to stop the sale of the house.

Group member and Macedon resident Blake Byron-Smith said the group was thrilled with the decision. “It’s great that eight out of the nine councillors threw their support behind it,” he said. “It’s a great vote of confidence.” Mr Byron-Smith said a neighbourhood house was the ideal use for the vacant building.
“We’ve received interest from different allied health providers to have it available for appointments, for consultations, counselling, naturopaths, mental health practitioners and GP visits,” he said. “The fact that it is close to all these other services like transport, kindergartens, local businesses … it’s walkable, you can ride your bike. It makes a lot of sense to activate this space again.” Mr Byron-Smith said he believed money for stage one of the revamp of the building would be considered in council’s 2019-20 budget. The future of the building was addressed at
Geoff steps it up for Royal Children’s Geoff Rayner will take his walking to a whole new level. The 57-year-old Sunbury resident started walking around the town in 2017 after going through gastric sleeve surgery. Recently he decided to take his walking one step further and will be walking from the Royal Children’s Hospital to Kruze 4 Kids at Langama Park in Sunbury on Good Friday. “I was walking down Elizabeth Drive and I was just thinking, ‘I’m doing all this walking, can I do it to help anybody?’” he said. “I happened to be walking past Langama Park, which I know Kruze 4 Kids is there, and I thought I’d ask them if they wanted me to do something. “It’s sort of like a personal goal because I wouldn’t even walk down to the shops in the old days but now I walk everywhere.” Mr Rayner has set up a GoFundMe page, with a goal of $1000 to raise for Kruze 4 Kids – an organisation which holds a car show and family day every Good Friday to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital. “Whatever money I can raise, I want it to go to Kruze 4 Kids … I just think they do a really good job,” he said. Mr Rayner said he was looking forward to the challenge of walking 40 kilometres. “I will be going up Mount Alexander Road, up to Keilor Road in Essendon, and then along Keilor Road, through Keilor Village and then up through Taylors Lakes and back up to Sunbury that way,” he said. “There’s still that challenge there because I don’t know whether I can do the distance but deep down I’m very stubborn. “The last hill’s up Elizabeth Drive, I’ve said to a few people, ‘If I have to crawl and drag myself up, I’ll get there’.” To donate: bit.ly/2uvxuMz

At last Wednesday’s council meting Cr Mandi Mees put forward a motion to stop the sale of the building. She said that while the council might not have a use for this building, the community did. “They’re a strong group of dedicated community members who want to build a strong sustainable program,” she said. “This is an opportunity, a very unique opportunity.” Cr Henry Bleak voted against the motion.
Safety first for Gisborne road upgrade Workers have hit the ground running to upgrade a Gisborne intersection. The $1.3 million project is expected to improve safety, visibility and traffic flow at the intersection of Saunders, Kilmore and Pierce roads. New turning lanes and street lighting will be built on Saunders Road, with new traffic islands for Kilmore and Pierce roads and realignment to Kilmore Road. A school bus stop at the intersection will also be relocated to improve safety by minimising school drop-off and pick-up traffic at the intersection. Construction will be carried out during the day and traffic management will include 40km/h stretches until the project is completed, expected to be by mid-year. Temporary lane closures will be enforced with signed detours. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said improving the road was crucial to ensure driver safety. “This intersection can be busy and difficult to navigate for the 5000 drivers relying on it every day, which is exactly why we’re getting on with fixing it,” she said. “We’re improving this vital stretch in to Gisborne to make sure our growing community gets home safer and sooner. “Since coming into office, we’ve doubled spending on road maintenance and now regional Victorian roads are getting the attention they deserve.” The project is funded by the state government’s Regional Roads Victoria. The Mystic Fair will bring a magical feeling when it comes to town, as it takes people into another dimension. Organiser Wilhelmina Handley said the fair was a “great quality event”. “Our fairs are about promoting education and awareness of the psychic world, holistic health, natural healing, conscious living and spirituality,” she said. “We will have a variety of stalls on display such as crystals, candles, divination, essential

Work has begun on construction of a Changing Places bathroom and two unisex public toilets at Jackson Creek Reserve in Gisborne. Changing Places bathrooms are larger than standard toilets to meet the needs of people with a disability and carers. By Jessica Micallef Josh Rodgers loves a good cup of coffee or two – so much so he has made a career out of it. Mr Rodgers, 18, has started his own coffee roasting business in Newstead. The coffee enthusiast left school when he was 14 years old to be homeschooled. He began working at the local roastery – where he discovered his love for coffee roasting. “I’m a very hands-on learner … and it [school] wasn’t working,” he said. “I was working in Malmsbury in Moto Bean, they’re a coffee roastery out there and I learnt
from there.” After moving to the Social Foundry in Kyneton to work full-time, Mr Rodgers has spent the past year building his business from scratch. He imports his coffee beans from small farmers across the globe. “We buy them [coffee beans] from all over the world, depending what’s in season, so sometimes Kenya might be picked, or sometimes Brazil might be picked,” he said. “I buy from micro-lots, which means it’s a very small batch of coffee that’s grown and the farmers really put a lot of effort in to
that small amount of coffee, so that’s my big thing, just supporting small farmers so I can help them, and give feedback because they’re putting their product in my hands, which is a huge thing.” Mr Rodgers’ business has been in operation for three months and he is now looking to the future. “In the next year or so, I hope to get a shop in Castlemaine, so the roastery will move there and then I’ll also have a cafe attached to that,” he said. “It’s been a big journey and we’ve come a long way.”

Players go belly up Football players are weighing in on their next challenge. In the lead-up to National Heart Week (April 28-May 4), more than 25 Woodend Hesket Masters Football Club players will be trimming their bellies in a six-week waist watchers challenge. Club president Ben Bush said the challenge was a great opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy life. “The club has been pretty focused on being a place of positive mental health for older blokes … a place where you can meet people and talk about whatever,” he said. “A side aspect of that … is the physical fitness element. “The focus is very much trying to lose some belly fat but a by-product of that will be the greater awareness of physical fitness.” The participating players took part in a
measure up last Wednesday and Mr Bush said the players were looking forward to the upcoming challenge. “It was pretty jovial, everyone was getting into it and poking fingers at tummies,” he said. “I think all in all, it’s going to be good.” The challenge includes a free healthy eating education session from a dietitian, weekly healthy eating tips and reminders to log waist measurement. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the six weeks for the player with the greatest waist circumference loss. Some say the pain from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, is comparable to child birth. SPORT Teen leads next generation of champs Age wasn’t a factor when Ethan Higgins lined up for the Ballarat Goldfields Central Highlands region bowls singles finals. The 18-year-old Gisborne bowler, who was representing the Central Highlands Bowls Division, won the grand final 25-19 against Greg Shay to qualify for the last 16 of the champion of championships in April. Higgins, who was the youngest competitor at the finals, said it was exciting to make the final 16 of the competition – the overall winner will be crowned the state champion of champions. “I thought I could win the Central Highlands title, but to win the region final is a bonus,” he said. “There was some good bowlers in the finals. “Once you get in there, any one can win on their day.” If he takes out the overall championship, Higgins would be the first CHBD bowler to win it since 1983. Higgins is one of the next generation of bowlers at Gisborne.
In the CHBD final, he beat then 19-year-old teammate Sam Rogers. Higgins said the final between the two was of a high standard and it was good for the region moving forward. Having spent time at other clubs, including Sunbury, in recent years, Higgins said it was nice to be back playing at his home club. “It makes things a lot easier to not have to travel so far,” he said. “Everyone has welcomed me back with open arms.” Higgins, a former under-18 state title winner and under-18 Victorian team member, has taken his bowls to the next level recently. He said having made the move from under-age events, to playing more open-age events had made a difference. “I’m really enjoying the open age a bit more,” he said. “It’s different challenges. There’s a lot more high quality players to help push yourself and get better.
“I’m playing so much better than I was last year.” Next up for Higgins is the state champion of champions finals. He will also compete in the indoor national championships in May, where he is hoping to go better than the round of 32 which he achieved last season. He also has his sights set on making another state team. “I want to make the under-25 state team,” he said. “I’m hoping to make that in the next year or so. “It will be hard work to break into it. I’ve played a lot of them in the past and there are some good players.” Tara Murray

“They then scored from a penalty and a free kick. “After half-time nobody could score or break the deadlock.” Ciantar said he was pleased with how the group responded in the second half. They played some really good football without converting. Connor Maxwell and Joseph Cavoli were the goalscorers for Gisborne. While disappointed not to come away with any points, Ciantar said they would take a lot of positives out of the match. “It’s early days and they are supposed to be the favourites for the league. “We were competitive and gave them a scare. I always thought it would take a few games for the players to adjust to the pace and pressure at this level. “We just need to get better in certain areas.” In another positive for the Sky Blues, last year’s leading goalscorer Jake McIntyre made his first appearance of the season. McIntyre came on with 25 minutes remaining. Ciantar said he was still a long way from playing the whole 90 minutes. Stratos Cantaro missed the game through illness, while Callan Haynes remains on the sidelines with a broken ankle. Ciantar said this year the team has a bit more depth than it did last year. Star Weekly sports journalist Tara Murray has won the Basketball Victoria Media Award for 2018. Murray was named the winner of the award at Basketball Victoria’s annual awards night last Tuesday at the State Basketball Centre. The award is in recognition of Murray’s overall coverage of basketball throughout the Hume, Whittlesea, Sunbury and Macedon Ranges, Melton and Moorabool areas. Murray has written stories on the Big V competition, including Sunbury Jets’ and Craigieburn Eagles’ championships, the Country Basketball League competition, state representatives and the local associations.
A poor 15 minutes before half-time cost Gisborne victory in FFV state league 4 west. The Sky Blues looked good for most of the game against Altona North but one poor period, during which they conceded three quick goals, proved costly. It meant a 2-0 lead turned into a 3-2 deficit. That would be the final score. Sky Blues’ coach Danny Ciantar said it was disappointing that such a short period of play was the difference. “We outplayed them in the first 30 minutes and scored two beautiful goals,” he said. “The last 15 minutes of the first half we fell apart. They scored straight after we scored our second goal and they lifted.

NAB League Girls
The Calder Cannons suffered their first loss of the NAB League Girls season on Sunday against Oakleigh Chargers. The Chargers got the jump on the Cannons with the first two goals and extended the lead in the second quarter. While the Cannons won the second half, it wasn’t enough with the Chargers, winning 7.2 (44)-5.4 (34). Tahlia Gillard kicked two goals for the Cannons. Emelia Yassir was named their best player in the loss.

“Hopefully we can come away with the three points,” Ciantar said. Meanwhile, Sunbury United gave up an early lead against Williamstown and had to settle for a draw. Sunbury hit the lead in the first half through Tomislav-Ante Trbuhovich, before doubling it in the 65th minute through Sime Brzoja.
Williamstown reduced the margin in the 75th minute after scoring one against the flow of play. Williamstown levelled the scores in the 90th minute with a great strike from outside the box. Neither team was able to score in injury time. Sunbury sits 1-1-0 after two matches. It faces Craigieburn City on Saturday.
The Calder Cannons are still without a win in the NAB League after losing to the Oakleigh Chargers. The Cannons didn’t score in the first quarter and trailed by 28 points at the first break. While the Cannons hit the front in the second quarter and trailed by two points at the last break, they ran out of legs, losing 10.9 (69)-7.4 (46). Harrison Minton-Connell was named the Cannons best.

Sunbury Lions hungry for redemption Sunbury Lions are hoping more stability this season will help them reclaim the title of the best team in the Ballarat Netball League. While the Lions claimed the minor premiership last season, they had a disappointing finals series and were knocked out in the preliminary final. Lions’ coach Adam Boldiston said the number of changes each week throughout the last season had come back to haunt them, but there wouldn’t be a repeat this season. He said the preliminary final loss had hurt the group and they were keen on some redemption. “Last season we had no consistency in the line-up,” he said. “We didn’t have those connections in the attacking end come finals. “This year we only have one player playing VNL [Victorian Netball League] and I haven’t had that before. “I think the players will be fresher mentally

and physically.” The Lions will have the same core group as last season, led by Ash Hardy and Tarryn
Munro. Only Kate Fletcher and Tarnee Adams, who both missed several games with VNL commitments and injury, aren’t returning. Boldiston has looked within to fill the A-grade side, with Amanda Cusack, Suzi Johnson and Lauren Wishart all stepping up from B-grade. All three played several games in the top side last season. “They know what it is about and have played there before,” Boldiston said. “Amanda showed she can match it with the defenders and is a lot more aerial than the other attackers we’ve had. It’ll be a different element and she will combine nicely with Ruth.” The B-grade side, which finished runners-up last season, has had several changes, and will include four under-19 players. Boldiston said he was excited to see what this team could do. “There’s just two players left from last year’s team,” he said.
“Some have stepped up and others have stepped down a grade. We needed some change. The young ones are finally ready to step up. “We’ve lost some experience, but we will have that youthful excitement.” Boldiston said some of the under-19 players would also get opportunities in the A-grade side at times to help with their development. He said the C-grade side, which won the premiership last year, would be stronger, as would the under-19 team, with the playing group a year older. The Lions will also have D-grade and for the first time an E-grade side. Boldiston said overall, it would be a different feeling for the club’s netball program. “There is an element of surprise,” he said. “People won’t know what to expect as they haven’t matched up against these teams.” Tara Murray

Lions still licking wounds By Tara Murray The Sunbury Lions are keen to return to the pointy end of the Ballarat Football League season, stung by a rare non-finals appearance last season. For the first time since joining the BFL, the Lions didn’t feature in finals. New coach Travis Hodgson said that it really hurt the playing group. Having watched the Lions from the opposition coaches box the past three years, Hodgson said he was keen to help them return to finals this year. “I can tell you that last year stung the group,” he said. “Having been so successful, playing finals has been part of the course. You can tell by the energy around the place that they want to try and get back into the top half. “From my point of view, we want to be playing finals. We’ve got a tough draw so we won’t look any further than that. “If we make finals we would have earned it.” It has been a stable off season for the Lions,
with the inclusions well outweighing the departures. Leigh and Ben Brennan were early inclusions and have been joined by Daylan Kempster, whose father played in two premierships with the Lions in the 1990s. Kempster has previously played VFL. Hodgson said all three would add some height to the side. “Daylan played his junior football at the club before moving away. He is a centre half-forward and back. “Leigh is a key forward and Ben can play at either end. We’ll likely play him back.” Dylan Featon, who comes across from Rupertswood, will also step into the side. Hodgson said a number of younger players who had played senior football at other clubs would add depth to the squad. For Hodgson though, some of the biggest inclusions have come from within including Mitch Conn and more recently, Lachhie Bramble, who will line up just with the Lions and not play VFL this season. Jack Sheahan, who has had several
injury-plagued seasons, has looked good in the pre-season, as has Mick Edwards who missed the back half of last year. “We’ve got a lot more depth considering we haven’t recruited a lot,” Hodgson said. “We’ve got guys from within the club who didn’t play much, who are up and about.” The inclusions of Sheahan and Leigh Brennan mean Grant Valles is likely to return to defence. The only notable outs on the clearance list are Aaron Christensen and Jack Fenner. Hodgson said they were still likely to see Christensen this year though. “He has moved to Sydney for work,” he said. “We looked at the options of flying him down. He will play the first half in Sydney, before he comes back to us for the second half of the season.” Adam Short, who the Lions had signed, has moved to Byron Bay and won’t pull on the jumper. The Lions start their season away on April 13 against Darley.
Despite playing a “shocker”, the Sunbury Jets came away with a win against Keilor Thunder in Big V women’s state championship. In an ugly physical game, the Thunder kept the pressure on throughout and never let the Jets completely get away. However, with the margin within five points in the dying minutes, the Jets snuck home 82-75. Jets’ skipper Chelsea Kereama [Burns] said it wasn’t a great performance from their side. “They are a very physical team and a very athletic team,” she said. “We knew it was going to be tough. “I’m not going to lie, I thought we had a shocker. We had that many turnovers, partly due to their pressure. “We didn’t adjust to that and let it get into our head, but to come away with the win and be resilient down the line under that sort of pressure, we’re happy to get away with the win.” The Jets looked to have control for much of the match, leading by as many as 18 points at one stage. The Thunder came back at them as fatigue set in. The Jets shooting stood out – they shot 53 per cent from the field and 42 per cent from beyond the arc. Courtney Duever top scored with 33 points, while Josie Stockill [21 points] and Lynn Leaupepe [20 points] also made good contributions. Youngsters Emily Conn and Chloe Angove both got minutes on the court. Kereama was full of praise for both of them. “They are training the lights out,” she said. “They have come up from youth league last year and are legitimate members of the team now. “Week in, week out they are showing what they can do.” Kereama said that they were still unsure when Orla O’Reilly and Jacinta Beckley would arrive following their European commitments. Meanwhile, the men’s division one side remains undefeated after three rounds. The Jets looked headed for victory after three quarters, before the Coburg Giants got back into the game. Scores were level at the end of regular time, before the Jets got up 92-89 in overtime. Ish Sanders top scored with 28 as four of the five starters scored double figures.
