Next chapter for lit fest Book in some time to indulge your passion for reading at Riddells Creek. More than 200 booklovers are expected to attend the fourth Dromkeen Litfest to celebrate children’s literature. Dromkeen owner Bernadette Joiner said the annual festival was a great event for people of all ages. “It’s a day for children, for families, for teachers, librarians, just anyone really who’s interested in children’s literature. “This year’s theme is stories connect us to the past, present and future and we have a number of award-winning authors and illustrators. “It’ll be a fantastic opportunity to encourage local children’s literature and books and stories.” The festival will feature authors Trace Balla, Corinne Fenton, Claire Saxby, Mark Wilson and illustrator Marc McBride. There will be the launch of two new picture books, author and illustrator talks, book readings and signings, art and craft activities. Ranges crime rates up Theft offences in the Macedon Ranges have hit a 10-year high, as overall crime levels in the region rise, new figures reveal. The latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency reveals theft offences have risen 18.3 per cent (from 617 reported offences to 730) in the year to December, 2018. There were 421 theft offences reported in the year to December, 2009, when the data was first collected. Total crime across the Macedon Ranges rose nearly nine per cent in the year to December,

2018, compared to the previous year. Property and deception offences – including arson, property damage, burglary and breaking and entering, theft and deception – rose by 13 per cent (from 1018 to 1223) in the same time. Macedon Ranges Inspector Chris Large said the police were engaging with residents
to help put a stop to crime, in particular theft. “That ranges from thefts of cars, which can include number plates,” he said. “Theft of petrol is significantly up, as is shoplifting and also burglaries on rural properties. “We’ve also run community forums in each town in the Macedon Ranges to talk about how to prevent themselves from being victims of crime.” Stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour offences dropped by 30 per cent (66 reported offences to 95) in the year to December, 2018, compared to the previous year.
Drug offences, including drug dealing and trafficking, cultivating or manufacturing drugs and drug use and possession – rose by nearly 12 per cent (from 117 to 137). “We’re always doing more drug road-side tests – it’s something that we focus on,” Inspector Large said. He said police were also executing more drug warrants. Offences including robbery, blackmail and extortion and homicide and related offences remained steady in the year to December, 2018.

for the children, it’s more inviting,” she said. “It’s been given a fresh coat of paint – first time in 20-something years. “We have had families say, ‘It’s just lovely’ … it’s just a lot more user-friendly.” Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas visited Romsey Kindergarten to open its extended facilities earlier this month. “Our government knows the importance of early childhood education – that’s why we’re making significant investments in kinders right across Macedon,” Ms Thomas said.
Gin fans climb their own mountain There’s a new distillery in the Macedon Ranges. Mountain Distilling opened its cellar doors to the public in September last year and is proving an ideal tonic for locals looking for a craft distillery in their hometown. “We have had an incredible response from the local community and broader Macedon Ranges,” co owner Michael Harris said. “There is a real sense of locals taking pride and ownership over this distillery that just popped up in their backyard and we absolutely love that.” Mr Harris and co-owner George Cremasco met while they were organising wine and beer for an event in the Macedon Ranges two years ago. “We realised at the time, [there was] a lack of craft distillers in central Victoria … and we just thought, why not?” Mr Harris said. “It’s been a passion of ours for years before we met.” They spent two years researching and developing gins that eventually led them to their first official creation, Mountain Gin, which became the inspiration behind their company name. Since opening their cellar doors, Mr Harris said the response from the public had been outstanding. He said the company’s ultimate goal was to “contribute to social outcomes” in Australia and across the globe. “One of our missions in building and scaling up Mountain Distilling is to ensure that we have a positive impact on people’s lives and land we steward,” he said. “It’s something that we’ve both valued since day one … we’re looking forward to sharing those stories with you when the time comes.” Mountain Distilling is located on 4 Taylors Road, Mount Macedon.
“These exciting upgrades will give Romsey and Riddells Creek’s littlest residents an even better kindergarten experience.” The state government provided Macedon Ranges council more than $500,000 towards the two kinder upgrades through the Children’s Facilities Capital Program. The upgrades are part of a $5 billion plan to ensure Victorian children have access to five hours of subsidised three-year-old kinder each week by 2022, progressively scaled up to 15 hours a week during the next decade.
Ambos treat five at youth justice centre Five people were treated by paramedics and one taken to hospital after an incident at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre last Tuesday afternoon. An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to the Mollison Street centre just after 5pm where they assessed five people. She confirmed one person was taken to hospital. A statement released by the Department of Justice and Community Safety said staff at the centre responded swiftly. “Youth justice staff responded to an incident at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre yesterday afternoon,” the statement read. “Emergency response procedures were immediately enacted, and the incident was successfully contained by staff. “Five staff and one young person were assessed for minor injuries, with one of those staff members requiring further assessment in hospital. That staff member has now returned home. “Staff are to be commended for their swift and professional response. “The incident will be reviewed by the Department of Justice and Community Safety, and referrals made to Victoria Police for investigation.” The incident comes after it was announced the Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct will be inspected by a team led by Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass during March and April. The inspection will focus on practices relating to solitary confinement of children and young people.

Recycling site reopens
The Environment Protection Authority has given permission for SKM Recycling to recommence receiving Hume’s recycling at its Coolaroo site. The EPA ordered SKM to stop receiving recyclable material at its Coolaroo and Laverton North plants while safety issues were fixed.

Gisborne reserve closure
Parts of Gardiner Reserve in Gisborne, including the playground area, will be closed to the public next month for a short period while tree removal work takes place. Eight trees will be removed from the area after they were found to be in poor condition and at high risk of falling. The reserve and playground is expected to be closed to the public for up to two weeks.

Sunbury talk show star A Sunbury student is making public speaking her main game. Michelle Grover, 16, will represent Salesian College at the Lions Youth of the Year Program district judging in Maryborough after progressing through the club, zone and regional sections. The program, organised by the Lions Club Australia, helps students improve their public speaking skills by going through an interview process and speaking in front of a series of judges. Ms Grover was asked questions about her accomplishments, which include being
awarded Hume’s Youth of the Year in 2018, and about her involvement with Guides. The year 11 student was then given two impromptu questions to answer. Ms Grover said she was looking forward to participating in the district finals on March 30. “I’m proud I’ve got this far,” she said. “I’m excited because I learn a lot. I hope, [through] being part of this, more students become involved. It’s a great experience for anyone to get involved. The Lions have been great to work with.” Jessica Micallef
Footbridge fix options
Macedon Ranges council is assessing options for the replacement or repair of the aged timber pedestrian footbridge in Lauriston. The bridge was closed to the public on March 15 after it was deemed unsafe by council officers. The old footbridge runs over the Coliban River, which runs parallel to Lauriston Road. The council has allocated funds in the current budget to upgrade or replace the bridge.

Photo club focuses on history By Jessica Micallef Here’s your chance to step back in time to see Romsey and Lancefield in an older era. The Macedon Ranges Photographic Society Now and Then Photography exhibition features photos of the two townships from historical and contemporary visual perspectives. Society president Deborah Mullins said the group applied for a grant through the Romsey and Lancefield Bendigo Banks to get an exhibition up and running. “We were lucky enough to be granted some money,” she said.

“Our aim was to have a project that would involve the public with a little bit of getting to know the community and get a bit of an understanding of the history of the two townships and what we’ve done is gather a series of images.” Historical images were sourced by the Romsey and Lancefield districts historical societies. Camera club members from MRPS then snapped their own photos of the same landmark or area. “There’s about 45 [photographs] in total that show some of the changes over time,” Ms Mullins said. “We photographed all of those [old] images, and then our camera club members photographed what they were like today.” Ms Mullins said the photos highlighted how some historic buildings changed over the years.
“The Shamrock Hotel in Lancefield, it looks the same today as it looked back then, but it’s now private homes,” she said. “The varied key buildings in Romsey have structurally not changed a lot but … the old photographs have people in horse and cart and it shows we’ve come a long way in a relatively short period of time. “We’re talking about the 1850s at the earliest, they [photographs] aren’t ancient, but they do highlight what life might have been like.” The exhibition is on until April 22, at 20a High Street Lancefield and 105 Main Street Romsey.

Spreading the warmth The ladies at Aveo Sunbury retirement village have been knitting up a storm. Concerned about the homeless in the Macedon Ranges, the knitting group members contacted the Gisborne Rotary asking how they could help. Rotary member Brendan Watters said the knitting group had now been knitting for the homeless for about six months. “The ladies from the knitting group … have been hard at work providing for the homeless and disadvantaged in the Macedon Ranges
area,” he said. “A stream of woollen items has been collected by Rotary for delivery to Cobaw Health, which distributes to the disadvantaged and the homeless. “On March 20, Gisborne Rotary Club were presented with 20 blankets plus beanies, scarves and gloves. “With the coming winter months, these donations will make a significant difference to those in need.” Jessica Micallef

Sports grants kicking on
By Jessica Micallef There’s a changing of the guard at a Sunbury automotive institution. Frank Buffone has purchased TYREPLUS Sunbury from Michael Walsh, who has worked there for 36 years. Mr Buffone, a qualified mechanic born and bred in Sunbury, said he had been in the automotive industry for more than 20 years. “I actually started my apprenticeship on this block when I was 16, so I’ve known Michael since I was 16,” he said. Mr Buffone said wanting to run his own show was one of the main inspirations for buying the business and he wanted to give something back to his hometown. He said he approached Mr Walsh about 12 months ago asking if he was prepared to sell the business. Mr Walsh said it wasn’t the right time. Fast forward to earlier this year and Mr Walsh and his wife decided retirement was looking good. The sale will be the end of a 36-year career that began quite by accident. Mr Walsh said a puncture in one of his plumber employer’s vehicles necessitated a visit to the business all those years ago. “A week later, I came back and I found the puncture still wasn’t repaired,” he said. After discovering the business was facing difficulties, he decided to take it on himself. “I thought I’d give it a go and … stay here 12 months,” he said. “It’s now been 36 years. “We’ve thoroughly enjoyed the business … it’s been a very good business to us and our family. “At any business, you get your down side on occasion, but other than that, the good sides more than outweigh the bad.”

Mr Walsh said he was proud to have kept a local business running for more than three decades, giving residents the opportunity to shop in their hometown. He said even the introduction of big name competition in the industry hasn’t deterred his loyal customers. “Sure, [it] put a little bit of panic in to me at first, but then I looked out the window – I could see the amount of cars,” he said.

Football and netball clubs in the Macedon Ranges are being encouraged to partner with the council to apply for the next round of Country Football and Netball Program grants. The program helps to replace and upgrade ageing facilities for football and netball clubs across rural, regional and outer metropolitan Victoria. Grants of up to $100,000 are available to go towards ground resurfacing, new lights, new netball courts and pavilions with accessible female changerooms. Since its launch in 2005, the Country Football and Netball Program has supported the revamp of sport facilities in Woodend, Riddells Creek and Kyneton. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the grants were a great way for clubs to enhance their facilities. “Funding boosts like these go a long way towards helping our local clubs cater for the growing numbers keen to be involved in local sport, from junior girls to senior men, and people off all abilities who want to play, coach and volunteer to support their club,” she said. “This funding continues our record investment in upgrading local clubs and facilities, and making sure that they are accessible, fit for purpose and the heart of our communities for training, competition, gatherings and celebrations.” Applications are open until June 3. Athletics cash for Kyneton By Jessica Micallef Young athletes are jumping for joy after Kyneton Little Athletics Centre received $2100 to buy new sport gear. The funds were raised through the sale of Coles community chiller bags. Club president Ashley Fraser said the money was a huge help. “It’s very important to the club to take a bit of a burden off the fundraising,” he said. “We’re buying some trolleys for the hurdles and we’re also buying a tent that we can put up at events to get people out of the sun.” Kyneton Little Athletics spokesperson Kris Ford said the club wanted safety equipment

because volunteer and member safety was a priority. “The hurdle trolley will enable our volunteers to move our hurdles safely and more efficiently,” he said. “The shade marquee will help prevent heat exhaustion and sunburn to both athletes and volunteers.” Coles state general manager said the supermarket chain was thrilled to help Kyneton Little Athletics Centre. “We were delighted to help because we know these are an essential part of little athletics – to support young budding athletes and parent volunteers,” he said. Super victory for rod racer Shaun Walsh is in seventh heaven – the Lancefield resident has claimed the prestigious Trevor Podger Memorial for a record seventh time last month. Walsh said winning the renowned super rod event at Simpson Speedway in Jancourt East was a great honour. “Every Trevor Podger Memorial is a good win,” he said. “It’s the biggest event on our calendar and to now sort of be called a master of the event, it’s pretty nice. “It’s hard to win one, let alone seven … we’ve had to race against some talented drivers. It’s also taken a lot of luck to fall our way.” Walsh experienced a rocky start to the event, but he and his crew eventually emerged victorious. “At the start of the night, we struggled with car pace and we actually rolled over after the first heat,” he said. The super rod enthusiast has been racing for nearly 18 years and enjoys travelling around the various race meetings. “From breaking down on the side of the road to sometimes celebrating … we have a lot of fun on our road trips,” he said. The event is named in honour of Trevor Maxwell Podger, who was killed in a car accident in 1976 aged 20. Jessica Micallef

Don’t avoid the Krusher Get ready to rumble – Premier Pro Wrestling is bringing its State Warfare show to Sunbury. Among the fighters taking part will be Sunbury’s Jason Presley, who says he has always had a passion for wrestling. “Early in life, I did 15 years of martial arts and I’ve always had a thing for fighting,” he said. “But wrestling’s been the thing that I’ve loved ever since I was a kid. “The superhero-type characters, the guys that can just go out and do unnatural things – it’s a great thing.” Presley’s wrestler name, Jason “Krusher” Cole, was inspired by a move he worked on in training – but it also has a family connection. “Cole is the last four letters of my sister’s
name,” he said. “I feel like every time I walk out, I have a piece of family with me.” As he travels around the nation participating in wrestling tournaments, Presley always regards fan interaction as a highlight. “I had a match a little while ago, and I had a fan come up to me and say, they looked up to me,” he said. “To hear that, coming from a young child who can look up to someone on the Australian scene instead of the worldwide scene – I live for that.” Premier Pro Wrestling’s State Warfare will be on Saturday, April 6, at Sunbury Memorial Hall, Stawell Street from 7pm. SPORT Jets flying high with two wins to start the season

Sunbury Jets made it two from two with a big road win against the Warrnambool Seahawks in Big V men’s division 1. After sneaking home in round one, the Jets backed it up with a hard-fought 71-59 win on Saturday night. Jets coach Ryan Addison said they couldn’t have asked for a better start. “It’s the best way to start the season,” he said. “It’s the first time we’ve done it in my three years I’ve been involved with the program. “The group we’ve got are very resilient and keep working on things.” The Jets got off to a flier through import Ish Sanders. Sanders, who missed last week, hit 17 points in the first quarter. From there the Jets maintained their lead and won two of the remaining three quarters. “Warrnambool is a big physical team,” Addison said. “We were able to hold it up to get stops when we needed to.”
Sanders finished with 34 points. Addison said Sanders, who has been in Australia for a couple of months, was excited to get back on the court for the Jets. He previously played for the Jets in 2016. Addison said while Sanders was able to find the scoreboard, they had struggled on the offensive end, with defense the key to their first couple of wins. He said they weren’t surprised though, as it was a very different side to the one they had last year. “We’ve got two guys coming back,” he said. “Most of the guys know each other or know of each other. “We’ve then got Arthur Trousdell, Ish and Joel Jeffrey, who hasn’t played yet. “The guys are trying to figure each other out.” Jeffrey, who is expected to be available this week, will provide more height to the side. “He’s a big guy from New Zealand who is coming across to try and get an opportunity

professionally. “He’s keen to impress.” With two wins on the board, the Jets have a good platform to try and launch their season. This week they play Coburg Giants on Saturday night. By Tara Murray Gisborne was outplayed by a better side and had to settle for second in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. Looking for their third premiership in four years, the Dragons came up against the best side in the past two seasons, Bacchus Marsh. The Bulls showed with both the bat and ball why they have been the top side and ended up worthy premiers. Dragons coach Glenn Waites said while they were disappointed not to take out the premiership, he didn’t take anything away from the Bulls. “They were the better team,” he said. “If it could be anyone besides us, we’re happy it is them. You can respect them and they are a terrific side.” The Dragons got the first win of grand final week when their skipper Jarryd Vernon was declared fit. Vernon had missed several weeks after a work accident left him with a hand injury. Waites said Vernon is the best batsman in the competition and having him back was an asset. “He had been batting for a number of weeks and fielding with a brace,” Waites said. “It was a matter of Workcover clearing him.” Once on the field, the Dragons won the toss and elected to bat. It was a tough start, with the Dragons losing three early wickets. They managed to get a couple of partnerships going, but the tail wasn’t able to go on with it and they were bowled out for 204. Jason Wilson top scored with 62. Waites said the score was on par. “We knew it was competitive and they would have to bat well to get it,” he said. “We left 20-30 runs out there. We lost 6-50 which isn’t great. “We were trying to push it to 250 and rolled the dice, but they bowled well.” On day two, the Dragons got an early wicket before the Bulls piled on the runs for the second partnership. At 1-91 at lunch, the game was in the Bulls hands. But the Dragons weren’t going to give up without a fight, and led by Jay King got themselves back in the game. “We bowled OK without being great,” Waites said. “We ended up taking three pretty quick wickets and then bowled 11 maidens in a row. “It was a solid effort by Mili [Milinda Sepala] and Scott Wakefield who used their experience and hung in there.

The Calder Cannons remain undefeated after three rounds in the NAB League Girls competition, beating the Sandringham Dragons on Saturday. The Dragons kicked the only goal of the first half, before the Cannons found another gear in the second half, to kick away to win 4.8 (32)-1.3 (9). It was all single goalkickers for the Cannons. Krstel Petrevski and Zali Friswell were named the Cannons’ best. The Cannons next game is Sunday against the Oakleigh Chargers.

It was a nightmare start to the season for the Calder Cannons in the NAB League on Sunday against the Sandringham Dragons. It was a one-sided affair, with the Dragons piling on the goals in the 19.13 (127)-1.12 (18) loss. Sam Ramsay was the lone goalkicker for the Cannons, while also picking up 19 possessions. Sunbury shows its strength with solid first-up win Everything has come together for Sunbury United in the FFV state league 3 north-west competition. With a core group of players from last season returning and a number of quality signings, Sunbury hopes it has put together a side that will be in the mix this season. Sunbury vice-president Greg Czapnik said depth-wise, it was the best that there had ever been at the club. “Lino [Grech] will have a real headache,” Czapnik said of selection. “It all came together, it was amazing. “It’s hard to attract players, but when you attract quality players, everybody stands up to see what we have done. “The signing of Jimmy Daniels was part of the catalyst for signing quality players. “We had players coming to us. We’ve been knocking back players, which we’ve never done before.” Sunbury kicked off its season on Saturday in brilliant fashion against Western Eagles, winning 4-1.
Czapnik said it was a match they dominated throughout. They were 2-1 up at half-time. “We’re pretty ecstatic,” he said. “It’s the first competitive game with a relatively strong squad. “We dominated the whole game to be honest. A defensive error from us is what they scored from. “At 2-1 we were dominate without creating a lot. We had two set pieces and were able to put them away. “Once we scored the third goal, the game petered out to nothing. They didn’t threaten us and we were doing it pretty easy.” Josh Metzger and Jimmy Daniels both scored in the first half in their first games for the club. Beau Summers, in his first full league game for Sunbury, scored the third goal, while Sime Brzoja came off the bench to score the sealer in the 87th minute. Czapnik said a big positive for the team was that several players are still to come back into the side, including their second striker. Having got off to a good start, Czapnik said
the key for the side was to maintain consistency throughout the whole season. A lack of consistency has plagued the side for the past few years. Last year they were sitting second and on track for promotion after round 19 before slipping up. “It’s a tight league with good quality sides,” Czapnik said. “As long as we are in the mix, maintain the consistency and don’t throw games away, we’ll be happy.” Sunbury will this week face Williamstown, away. In state league 4 west, Gisborne had to share the points with Truganina Hornets. Playing its first game at that level, Gisborne scored once in each half as the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Stratos Cantaro and Connor Maxwell were the goalscorers for Gisborne. This week Gisborne travels to face Altona North on Saturday afternoon. Tara Murray

Cats taste premiership cream By Tara Murray Macedon has ended a first XI premiership drought with a big win in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield Sub-District Firsts grand final. It had been 11 years since their first XI last tasted success. But at the weekend, the Cats’ current group made their own history as they beat Sunbury United. For Cats captain Craig Pender it was a pretty special moment for him and club. “We managed to bring the flag home,” he said. “Macedon is a pretty small club and everyone has stuck together. “We finally settled on the first team 12 and the players stuck together. “It’s pretty special to win the flag together. “There was good turnout at the club and great support.” The Cats, who claimed the minor
premiership, entered the grand final against Sunbury United as favourites. The Cats won the toss and elected to bat, going on to make 199. Pender said he wasn’t 100 per cent happy with that score with the side losing wickets at the wrong time. “We set 200 as the minimum to make to be honest,” he said. “We thought it was enough to put pressure on United. “I didn’t think it was enough, it was a bit unnerving.” Gareth De Rosayro top scored with 80, with Brett McKay the next best with 28. While Pender was slightly worried, he had no need to be. Like they had all season, the Cats bowlers did the job that was asked of them. The Cats managed to bowl United out for 163. Pender said he was thrilled with how the bowlers had responded. United never got going
after being in trouble at 2-5. “Nick Aikman bowled into the wind all day and took five wickets bowling fantastically.” Aikman finished with figures of 5-42, while Dan Trotta took two wickets. De Rosayro was named man of the match for his batting. Pender said De Rosayro was brilliant all weekend. “He made 80 and then he stood at the stumps all day and did a fantastic stumping. “He’s probably still the captain of the side on the ground and directs everyone around as he’s the wicketkeeper. “I’m more than happy to let him do that. The only reason he stood down and I’m the captain is that he has a young family.” Pender said one of the nicer moments of the grand final was playing with Patrick and Darcy Doyle. Pender, along with a couple of others, played with their father in the last first XI premiership. “It’s all pretty special for all of us.”
The premiership capped off a top season for the Cats. Their second XI side also claimed the minor premiership before being knocked out in the semi-final. Pender said it was a really good effort from that side. “For them to make finals is really special for us,” he said. “It was disappointing for them not to make the grand final, but they were all down to watch us.” Pender said he hoped the premiership would help attract new and old players back to the club. He said he was unsure whether the top side would return to the Johnstone Shield next season, after requesting to drop down this season. “Hopefully we’ll get back to the way it was when I was first here, when we had four teams up and going. “A lot of things can happen. We have a lot play football and were affected by injuries. “We’ll know more come August-September.”

Suzuki Jimny is quite simply the most talked about vehicle on the planet. Forget the multi-million-dollar, ridiculouslyoverpowered vehicles just unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, the cute-as-a-button Suzuki is the one that is dominating car-nut conversations everywhere. Since the first photos of the Jimny were released dealers have been bombarded with inquiries. Suzuki Jimny simply has no competition. No one else builds a low-cost, small, genuine 4WD. The closest vehicles come from Jeep and Land Rover, but they are out of the Jimny’s price class. We’ve just spent two weeks in a brace of new Jimnys, one a manual the other automatic. Styling I must admit being wrong when first sighting Jimny at the Queensland launch, feeling that it was just too boxy. But after seeing it on the road and watching the attention our test Jimnys got from passers-by I’ve fallen in love with it. The interior has a neat old-style dashboard, but it’s bang up to date with big easy-to-read instruments and a infotainment screen. Powertrain Power comes from a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 100 horsepower (75 kW in Aussie numbers) and 130 Nm of torque. The torque peak is at a relatively high 4000 rpm, but it feels fine from about 2000 and there’s a nice spread of grunt in all normal driving ranges. The engine sits in front of either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. All four wheels are driven by way of a transfer case with 2H, 4H and 4L modes that are selected by a lever on the centre tunnel.

Safety Small … tough … ladder chassis … rigid-axles … heavy duty suspension. All are excellent features in a genuine 4WD. But make it very difficult to build a tiny vehicle that collapses well in a crash. The result is that Jimny only has a three-star crash rating. Driving One more gear in the manual and a two more in the auto would have been appreciated on

the open road, particularly on motorways. Around town the manual and auto both feel fine and the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) levels are noticeably lower than on the old Jimny so the interior is more sedate than you might expect. It’s not to small-hatch standards but surprisingly close. Handling is good with levels of grip and ease of control at speeds that belying that fact that it’s a body on chassis 4WD. The steering feels a bit vague at times as on

old-style truck-based 4WDs. The secret is to avoid correcting every tiny little movement and let the Jimny make its own corrections. Strong crosswinds do move it around at times, something that would be very tiring on a long trip. As part of the media launch in January we did serious off-road driving on moguls and steep, deeply rutted hill trails. The new Jimny has even better approach / ramp-over / departure angles than the old, which were already excellent. Jimny takes you places where other alleged SUVs would get well and truly stuck and does it so easily that it feels more like a stroll in the park than a battle with the terrain.
