A pledge to tackle mobile black spots in bushfire-prone areas has been welcomed by Macedon Ranges council. The Labor Party has announced that it will invest up to $2 million in a connectivity plan to address mobile phone black spots across the shire if it wins the upcoming election. Bullengarook, Gisborne South, High Camp and Mount Macedon were identified by Labor as locations with “poor mobile communications”. Council acting planning and environment director Susan La Greca said the council was aware of the mobile black spots and welcomed the pledge. “Council undertakes ongoing advocacy work with telecommunication providers with the aim to provide residents and business owners with access to basic mobile services,” she said. “Each of the Macedon Ranges locations identified in Labor’s election commitment are known mobile black spots. “Additional infrastructure to improve these black spots would be welcomed.” Gisborne South resident Cathy Beck Evans said her family did not have mobile coverage at home. “The lack of mobile coverage impedes [me] and my husband’s ability to fulfil our work commitments,” she said. She said that during a 2014 bushfire, the Fire Ready app did not alert them to impending danger. Labor regional spokesperson Stephen Jones said more priority needed to be placed on Macedon Ranges mobile coverage. “There are many locations in this region that should have been funded by now, given their high bushfire risk and emergency service needs,” he said. “We must do more to help regional communities when it comes to mobile black spots.” McEwen MP Rob Mitchell backed the funding call. “On Code Red days … residents and visitors need to be able to rely on this coverage for updates on conditions and any alerts of fire,” he said. “Regions like ours should be highest priority, because we know exactly how big the impact is.”

Children are getting egg-cited for the fourth annual Malmsbury Easter egg hunt. More than 100 children are expected to gather at the Malmsbury Botanical Gardens on Good Friday to search for scrumptious chocolates scattered throughout the garden. The event is run by local resident Tiffany Speight and her husband, who also organise the Malmsbury Christmas carols. Ms Speight said ticket sales from the egg hunt go towards helping a local organisation. This year, it’s Macedon Ranges Live4Life. “We are interested in youth mental health and the prevention of suicides,” Ms Speight said. Face-painting, music workshops, and colouring-in competitions will be among the fun at the Easter egg hunt, with the appearance of the Easter bunny ready to greet children. College upgrade extends scientific opportunities Sunbury College’s would-be boffins are enjoying a new formula for learning thanks to a $3.5 million science wing that was unveiled last week. Principal Darryn Kruse said the wing provided four “state-of-the-art science classrooms” and break-out areas for small group work, as well as seven new general classrooms. “It’s a new home for some of our extension programs, like the robotics project, science competitions and drone construction and piloting club,” he said. He said the wing delivered facilities that

supported “modern teaching and learning” and in which teachers and students would effectively work together. He said the science wing offered the college greater opportunities for team teaching, carefully supervised small group work and increased access to multimedia for the students. Sunbury MP Josh Bull, who attended the opening of the new science wing last Wednesday, said it was a great addition to the school. “It’s fantastic to see students at Sunbury College putting their new science facility to

use,” he said. “This science wing will equip them with the knowledge and skills to thrive in school and beyond. “This is all part of keeping our commitment to Sunbury College and the broader community.” Jessica Micallef

Ristevski admits to killing wife By Tom Cowie, The Age For more than two and a half years, everyone thought it was him. He denied it. But he was lying. Just one day before the most anticipated murder trial of the year was to begin, Borce Ristevski sensationally pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his wife Karen. The killer’s admission, so late that a jury was being empaneled, finally provides an answer to the mystery that has gripped Melbourne since Karen vanished in June 2016. Until Wednesday in the Supreme Court, Borce had staunchly maintained, in the face of intense scrutiny, that he had nothing to do with Karen’s death. The couple’s only daughter Sarah, who gave favourable evidence for her father at an earlier court hearing, now has to cope with the reality it was him all along. The case against Borce was circumstantial but it pointed to no one except him. The heat increased quickly as police focused their investigation, as they often do, on the victim’s partner and the person who saw them last. In both instances, that was Borce. From the earliest days when Karen was still considered a missing person, he faced questions about whether he killed her. At a press conference appealing for help from the public, he was asked by a reporter directly: “Did you kill Karen, Borce?” The case was front-page news and the hot topic of conversation in every city cafe. There was a multitude of theories that helped fuel the intrigue: Borce reportedly told family members a stranger might have taken her; his brother Vasko claimed she had fled overseas using a fake passport; her stepson told police the marriage was fake and she had planned to leave. All turned out to be red herrings. Even after Karen’s decomposed body was found between two logs in bushland at Mount Macedon in February 2017, Borce maintained the appearance of a loving husband devastated about what had happened to his wife.

He was a pallbearer at her funeral, carrying the casket in front of a tearful family, many of whom thought he was the killer. Karen’s aunt, Patricia Gray, told police she thought Borce’s account of his movements on the day of her disappearance was “flimsy”. Even his lawyer said he was “suspect No. 1”. Police finally laid a murder charge in December 2017. At a committal hearing, prosecutors alleged Karen was murdered in their Avondale Heights home after an argument about money before

Borce drove the body up the Calder Highway to Mount Macedon. After reporting her disappearance, Borce told police she had gone for a walk and the last thing she said to him was: “I can’t talk to you right now. I am going to clear my head.” The couple more than $1 million in debt, with their clothing business Bella Bleu racking up losses of $326,000 between 2012 and 2016. Police built their case on a combination of CCTV footage and pings to mobile phone

towers that would show Borce had driven Karen’s black Mercedes Benz on the day of her disappearance. Borce initially kept this detail from police, one of a number of actions that would prompt a prosecutor to accuse him of withholding information and fabricating facts to “distance himself from the crime”. To begin with, he claimed to have stayed at home and then went out later for a shift as an Uber driver. Five days after Karen’s disappearance, Borce told investigators he drove the Mercedes on the Calder Freeway towards Gisborne as part of a trip to get fuel and visit the clothing store, before he turned around and went home. The trip lasted 80 minutes, he said. But police believed he was away for longer than that, calculating it at two hours and 19 minutes. Enough time, they figured, for him to spend 20 minutes at the park to hide a body. There were other oddities that made this case stranger than most true crime sagas. Perhaps the strangest was a TV crew from A Current Affair spotting Vasko Ristevski metres from where Karen’s remains were found months earlier. At a court hearing last July, Borce’s daughter Sarah said her mother was the more aggressive in her parents’ relationship and she would sometimes go for walks to clear her head. In the days after her mother went missing she called Karen’s phone and continually checked Whatsapp to see if she had logged in. What she didn’t know is that Borce had deactivated both his and his wife’s phones after killing her the day before. “What happened?” she asked her father, according to a police statement. Borce replied: “You know what she gets like when she gets onto one thing and then onto another and continues it.” At all of his court hearings, Borce maintained a steely gaze under the white-hot spotlight that comes with a murder accusation. Through it all, Borce denied killing his wife. Finally, he has admitted the truth.

Beating the seizures

Hume landfill use continues

By Jessica Micallef Amanda Anderson was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was 23 years old – but it wasn’t an ordinary diagnosis. The Gisborne resident said her first seizures weren’t typical. “We weren’t really sure what they were … I was just staring off, unconscious, so I didn’t know what was going on,” she said. Ms Anderson, 38, said that when more seizures struck, she decided to see a neurologist. “It didn’t look like typical epilepsy, as in what people think epilepsy is, which is the jerking,” she said. “I had those, too, but to start with, [I] was just staring off and I wouldn’t remember anything … it looked like I was day dreaming.” Once she was diagnosed with epilepsy, she was prescribed medication. But her husband, James Anderson, said the medication was not as effective as they wanted. “It wasn’t actually stopping it all together – it was controlling it, but we didn’t realise it at the time,” he said. “When Amanda went off medication and tried some natural therapies, it actually then showed the full extent – that she was having these full blown seizures.” Ms Anderson said: “I started to have the tonic clonic seizures, which is what you think of with epilepsy – so the jerking and you’d bite your tongue and your cheeks … they’re pretty awful.” More than four years after her diagnosis, doctors at the Monash Hospital found scar tissue on her right temporal lobe. It was recommended she undergo brain surgery. “I had a newborn at the time and I was like, ‘No way am I having neurosurgery’,” she said. “But the seizures got worse and eventually

I said, ‘OK’. It’s a big thing because it’s brain surgery – especially since I just had a baby.” Looking back at her brain surgery nearly nine years on, Ms Anderson said it was the best decision she could have made. “It changed everything,” she said. “I’ve only had a few seizures since then … it was definitely life-changing.

“In 2014, I did a bachelor in social science psychology … now I work for a company called PS My Family Matters, so we look after the carer for someone with mental health problems.” The community is being encouraged to wear purple on Tuesday, March 26, to mark International Purple Day and help raise awareness of epilepsy.

Hume kerbside recycling will continue to be sent to landfill, with SKM Services Coolaroo plant remaining closed. However, Macedon Ranges will redirect its collection to SKM’s Laverton North site after it was cleared to accept waste last week. The Environment Protection Authority lifted its ban on SKM accepting waste at Laverton North following an inspection of the plant last Tuesday. No recycling from Macedon Ranges has been redirected to landfill during the closure. Macedon Ranges council had made short-term arrangements for recycling to be taken to an “alternative material recycling facility”. However since it has been advised of the Laverton North site re-opening the council will redirect recycling collections to that site for processing. The EPA banned SKM from accepting waste at both sites on February 15 amid concerns that stockpiles of waste at the plants were a fire hazard. EPA chief executive Cathy Wilkinson said the ban was implemented for public safety. “The closure of the SKM sites was a decision taken to protect the community from the risk of a major fire,” Dr Wilkinson said. SKM’s Coolaroo site remains “non-complaint” and is unable to accept waste. Jessica Micallef

Two killed

Two male passengers have died after a ute lost control and crashed into a tree on Rochford Road, Lancefield just before 7pm on Saturday. The two passengers, aged 36 and 31, died at the scene. The driver was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital with a life threatening head injury. He remains in a critical condition.

Hydroponic arrest

Police arrested a man after locating an alleged hydroponic set-up in Sunbury last Wednesday. The 35-year-old was arrested at a property on Holloway Close about 7.30pm. Police said that while executing a search warrant, investigators located a quantity of cannabis plants. The man has been charged with cultivate, traffick and possess a drug of dependence, proceeds of crime, theft of electricity and other offences. He has been bailed to appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on August 1.

Invincible relay duo still moving By Jessica Micallef A Gisborne mother and son have forged a formidable cancer-fighting team. Sarah Dale has been participating in the Lancefield and Macedon Ranges Relay for Life for four years. Her son, Tyson Dale, has been running in the relay for three years. Ms Dale said their relay efforts followed the death of her father, Richard, from asbestos cancer on Christmas Eve in 2014. “A friend was starting up a team … she was doing a letter drop,” she said. “I thought it was the right time – I just wanted to do something.” The team captain suggested to Ms Dale that she should create her own team. “So I asked Tys … and he said, ‘Let’s do it’,” she said. “Having your own team, it’s a totally different experience.” As part of this year’s relay, held earlier this month, their team, The Lion Hearts, raised $5360 through sausage sizzles, a bingo night and the sales of can coolers and wrist bands. And they’re far from finished – Ms Dale and Tyson are already looking ahead to next year’s relay and have organised an outdoor family movie night for early next month. Tyson said: “Each year, if you raise $5000, you get a research grant … you get to pick which cancer research it goes to so that’s why we wanted to raise $5000.” Ms Dale said the movie night would include a jumping castle, animal farms and mini-golf.

“The local footy club is doing a sausage sizzle and we’ve got a candy hub with popcorn and fairy floss and confectionery,” she said. The movie night feature film will be Incredibles 2 and tickets cost $10 each or $30 for a “carload”. Ms Dale said the relay events were perfect for raising money for a “great cause”. “It’s just about the people,” she said. “It’s fun and emotional and it’s just fabulous. “We’re all there for that same common goal.” The outdoor movie night will be on Saturday, April 6, from 4pm at Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve. ambourin, a registered NDIS provider, has been opening up opportunities for adults living with disabilities for more than 40 years. It supports community members through a range of social and community choices, work-readiness programs and recreation and leisure activities. Customer Dalia has been coming to Mambourin for six years and even gave a speech at the opening of the Sunbury community hub. “Since being at Mambourin, I have achieved many goals, including how to use a Microsoft Word document on my own,” Dalia says. Dalia enjoys cooking and learning how to use Microsoft Word has given her the skills she needs to write out her recipes. ‘’I enjoy coming to Mambourin because I like to socialise and learn new things,” she says. “My favourite activity is literacy. I like to give myself a challenge.’’ Literacy is just one of the choices available at Mambourin’s Sunbury hub. Others include all-abilities tennis, life skills such as using public transport and library access. Providing transport between hubs allows it to offer more choices and connect people to a wider range of opportunities. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has now been rolled out across Hume, providing people with greater choice in the services they access. But navigating

the scheme can be confusing. “Mambourin has a dedicated NDIS team that can guide people through the process and help them bring their plans to life,’’ Leah says. “We’ve had a number of NDIS success stories, with some of our customers being able to access more services than they could prior to the roll-out.’’ Mambourin runs tours of its community hubs and also sets up at expos and events,

MaryRose believes the pre-school is much more than a school. “It’s like a mini community of learners where children develop skills they can then use in the real world,” she says. “The role of the Montessori teacher is to guide and encourage the child as they learn and mature, giving them space to learn by themselves and take ownership of their achievements.” Maria, along with three other dedicated teachers, has been working at the pre-school for more than a decade. “We’ve been working together as a team for some time now. It provides consistency and stability for the children,” Maria says. Established in 1985, the pre-school is a private kinder run by a Committee of Management, made up of parent volunteers. The pre-school runs programs for children aged two to six years which builds a strong foundation for transition into primary school. Tours of the pre-school are held on a regular basis. Macedon is into the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield Sub-District grand final after delivering on its semi-final game plan. The Cats couldn’t ask for much more in their win against Malmsbury on Saturday, with the game over on the first day of the two-day semi-final. After winning the toss, Malmsbury elected to bat, yet was bowled out for just 71. Cats bowler Daniel Trotta said they had stuck to their plans and everything seemed to come off. “We really bowled well,” he said. “We emphasised trying to keep it together in the field and back each other up. “We’ve been bowling partnerships all year and we did it again.” Nathan Aikman and Trotta took three wickets each for the Cats. Darcy Doyle and

Mitch Graham snared two wickets each. Trotta said one of their strengths this season had been spreading the bowling load. While only chasing a small total, the Cats weren’t prepared to take any risks. Trotta said it didn’t matter how long it took to get the runs. “We wanted to make sure we didn’t collapse,” he said. “They are a good batting side and we saw what happened to them – so it could happen to us. “We were batting time and weren’t in any rush to get runs. It was still hard work and we had to dig in. “We didn’t want to lose quick wickets and allow them to get momentum. We ended up getting the runs and got the day off.” Gareth De Rosayro scored 22, while Chris Axton and Brett McKay hit 21 each.

The Cats will be looking to break a premiership drought, with their top side last winning a premiership in the 2007-08 season. Trotta, who was part of that last premiership side, said they were hopeful of adding another title this weekend against Sunbury United. “There is three or so guys still around who were in that team,” he said. “The lower grades have had some success in that time. “It’s great to see a few young kids coming through who are Macedon people who are helping us win games. “We have home ground advantage and hopefully we get a lot of Macedon people and supporters to cheer the boys on. “We’ll give it our best shot and hopefully come away with the win.” Tara Murray

Jets’ first game misfires By Tara Murray A late Sunbury Jets’ comeback fell short against the Hume City Broncos in the opening round of the Big V women’s state championship. Playing each other in the season-opener for a second straight year, it was the Broncos who came away with the points. The Jets trailed most of the game and fought hard to reduce the margin to two points in the final quarter but the Broncos remained composed and held on to win, 84-80. Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama said while they would have liked a first-up win, there were still a lot of positives. He said Hume was shaping up as one of the teams to beat this season. “It was a good game of basketball,” he said. “Both teams played a good game and shot at a good clip. They shot at 55 per cent and we shot at 46 per cent, so it was a good game for the spectators. “We got ourselves into a position to steal it, but had lapses at the wrong time especially in the defensive end. “We still shot 80 points and are still missing two important pieces of the puzzle.” Lynn Leaupepe top scored in her first game for the Jets, with 22 points. Courtney Duever, Josie Stockill and Courtenay Wragg all scored double figures as well. Kereama said it was a good debut performance from Leaupepe. “It’s her first season as a pro,” he said. “It’s good for her to contribute and make an impact straight away.” The Jets are yet to show all the cards in their hand, with last year’s Big V all-star and grand final most valuable player Orla O’Reilly and recruit Jacinta Beckley both missing the game due to basketball commitments in Europe. Kereama said it was a waiting game to find out when they will be in Sunbury colours, “Hopefully it’s sooner than later,” he said. “We still had enough talent to compete and have the opportunity to win last night.” Kereama would not rule out further additions to the side down the track. He said they still had a bit to work on as the season progresses, but like last season they were keen to make sure they were playing their best basketball towards the end of the season. The Jets men’s side started the division 1 season with a determined win against the Bulleen Boomers. Despite missing star import Ish Sanders, the Jets came from behind at three-quarter time to win 69-65. The Jets won the last quarter 17-6. Title eludes Lancefield Lancefield’s premiership hopes came undone in the Central Highlands Bowls top division grand final on Saturday. Playing Bacchus Marsh and looking to break a flag drought, Lancefield fell short. Bacchus Marsh, which found form at the right time of the season, won three of the four rinks to claim the title 97 (16)-83 (2). Daniel Willis, Glenn Arthur and Phil Minniti were the winning skips for Bacchus Marsh, with Michael Linehan’s rink the sole winning rink for Lancefield. The premiership is Bacchus Marsh’s first in 30 years, while Lancefield has had to settle for runner-up for the second time in three years. Bacchus Marsh will this weekend travel to Smeaton in a bid to win the region championship. Bacchus Marsh had a good weekend, with its division 2 side also claiming a title, its second in three years. The year it didn’t win, the side was playing in division 1. In this year’s grand final, it beat Kyneton Red 70 (14)-67 (2) in a thriller. Barry Stenholdt and Ross Greening skipped the winning rinks for Bacchus Marsh. It’s the second successive year that the same club has won the division 1 and 2 titles. Romsey also tasted premiership joy, winning the division 3 title. In the most one-sided of the three grand finals, Romsey smashed Gisborne 96 (15)-57 (1). Roger Kozulins’ rink did the damage, winning 44-11, while Grant Pritchard’s rink won by six shots and John Boyce’s rink shared the points. Riddell’s season and grand final hopes have come to an end at the hands of an experienced St Anthonys outfit in Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts. The Bombers, who finished the regular season in third spot, were hoping to cause an upset by knocking off second-placed St Anthonys. However, while the Bombers had periods of dominance, they eventually fell well short. with St Anthonys eventually making 235. “Things didn’t go to plan,” King said. “Their sixth-wicket partnership put on 100 runs and that hurt us. “We dropped a couple of catches in there – and, as usual, catches win matches.” Heath Brown, Ben Radford and Daniel Fisk took three wickets each for the Bombers. King thought the Bombers were in with a chance, even though they had struggled to post scores in excess of 200 this season. As in their bowling, the Bombers’ batting effort started well before falling away. They were bowled out for 143. “Ben Radford opened the batting for the first time and put on 50,” King said. “At 2-58, we were tracking in the right direction, but the wheels fell off. “We couldn’t get that partnership. Harry Fisher made 46 coming in at seven, but no one could stick around with him.” King said that despite missing out on a

grand final, the season was one of success. He said that after losing seven first XI players and dropping a grade in the off season, they didn’t know what to expect. “Finals was the aim at the end of the day,” he said. “We finished where we expected to be. “On our day, we were thereabouts. Hopefully, the young guys will stick around for next season.” The Bombers’ second XI are through to the grand final after upsetting minor premier Ashfield. In the Johnstone shield, the Saints will face Bacchus Marsh in the grand final after the Bulls upset minor premier Rupertswood. The Bulls set the win up on day one when they bowled Rupo out for 167. Dragons race to decider By Tara Murray Gisborne fired on all cylinders as it smashed Romsey and earned a spot in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts grand final against Bacchus Marsh. The Dragons couldn’t have asked for a better performance, claiming the win with more than a day remaining. Dragons’ coach Glenn Waites was rapt. “The momentum has been building at the right end of the season,” he said. “We’ve managed to get the balance back with the bowling. “Joel [Garbutt] has come back in and we’ve learnt some things with combinations – and we’re really hard to bat against.” The bowling group set up the win, dismissing Romsey for 102. The previous weekend, Romsey had piled on 475 against Wallan. The Dragons’ bowlers never let Romsey get going, with Taylor Stevenson top-scoring with

Waites was full of praise for King’s performance. “He is a big-time player – every time it comes to finals, he ups the level,” Waites said. With the Dragons needing 103 for victory and with more than a day to get there, Waites said they stuck to what they had been doing throughout the season. He said it didn’t matter whether they got the runs on the Saturday afternoon or Sunday. “We had no doubt we could get the runs and there wasn’t many nerves,” he said. “We wanted to go out and bat positively regardless of the situation … sticking to batting how we would normally. “Jakson and Darren Ward are aggressive batsmen anyway.” The Dragons passed Romsey’s total one wicket down before finishing on 1-130, with Knight on 92 not out. runs never crossed his mind. Waites said making the grand final made up for some of the disappointment of last season when they missed finals. The Dragons could have a selection dilemma this weekend, with captain Jarryd Vernon in the mix to return. Vernon hasn’t played since round 11 due to a hand injury. “I think he is the best batsman in the competition,” Waites said. “He’s been doing a lot of work in the background and did some batting last week. “He has some hurdles to get through work-wise … but he’s definitely not ruled out yet.” Bacchus Marsh easily accounted for Diggers Rest Bulla, chasing down the Burras’ 183 for the loss of three wickets. Waites said they know what to expect coming up against the Bulls, who claimed the minor premiership and are looking for a second successive flag.

It wasn’t Diggers Rest Bulla’s day in the field as its season came to an end in Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. Well and truly in the semi-final against Bacchus Marsh after day one, the Burras struggled to keep that momentum going on day two. In the end, the Bulls had an easy win with seven wickets and 19 overs remaining. Burras’ captain-coach Rasika Batepola said they were happy with their score of 183. “It was a slow ground,” he said. “We thought it was worth about 200 normally. We thought we were in with a good chance.” Upul Fernando was the standout with the bat, top scoring with 55. Batepola said Fernando had been a revelation in his first season at the club. “We are looking at signing him for next season,” he said. “He lives in Diggers Rest now. He’s had an impact with the kids in the under-17s and he’s been my assistant coach. “He’s excelled as a player and had a huge impact at the club.” The Burras’ hopes unravelled on day two as the Bulls took control of the game. The Bulls finished with 3-184 to get the win. “We tried our best, but we couldn’t get the ball to swing,” Batepola said. “We missed some chances – a run-out and a couple of catches. “We didn’t bowl the way we had the last couple of games and didn’t field well, either.” Batepola said James Lidgett, who finished 118 not out, had showed them how to bat. With the season over for their first XI, Batepola said he was proud of how they had played. “Our twos made the grand final with a win against Sunbury,” he said. “We had five or six new faces this year and it was hard to click. “We didn’t have the best end, but I’m so proud of the boys who tried their best.” Bacchus Marsh will face Gisborne in the grand final.
