Close shave for cancer

An application for a planning permit to build a Buddhist temple in Gisborne has been refused. The application, from Bill Jacobs Pty Ltd, proposed to build a “place of worship comprising a Buddhist temple and assembly building” at 125 McGeorge Road, Gisborne. At last Wednesday’s council meeting, councillors and residents debated the issue for two hours. Objections raised at the meeting included inconsistent use of a rural residential zone, traffic safety, environmental impacts, bushfire risk, car parking and the Aboriginal cultural heritage. Gisborne resident Deb Dunn showed councillors a series of photographs of the dwellings, including a shed, already on the property. “That shed is less than five metres tall … that is a huge shed [and] that is typical of the outbuildings that the people of this shire have,” she said. “The proposed assembly hall and the proposed temple are almost just shy of double the height of this building and we’re told that this is going to fit in a landscape. “There are only two buildings that I can find in the Macedon Ranges shire that are 9.5 metres tall. “We … are supposed to find it acceptable to have the equivalent of a three-storey building in the middle of a significant landscape overlay in Gisborne South.” The proposal stated the shed would be used for storage and the dwelling would continue to be occupied by the monks currently residing on the subject land. The council received 52 objections to the proposal and four letters of support. Council officers had assessed the permit against the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme and considered it to be appropriate. “Just because you’re allowed to do something in a zone, doesn’t mean you have to,” Cr Jennifer Anderson said. “There is that precautionary principle and if we have concerns … then we’re on the side of caution. “Sometimes we make those difficult decisions to go against what our planning experts have advised us and we continue to have respectful relationships and we acknowledge what everyone is saying.” She encouraged councillors to reject the planning permit. Councillors Henry Bleak and Bill West voted against rejecting the permit.

A young basketballer is shooting for a new goal. Nine-year-old Scarlette Guarino will this year participate in the World’s Greatest Shave to help raise money for blood cancer. “A couple of months ago, I wanted to just shave my hair and then mum said, ‘Do you want to do it for a cause?’,” Scarlette said. She said when her mum suggested joining in the World’s Greatest Shave she jumped at the chance. “I’m a little bit nervous because it’s my first time having no hair [but] some days I just want it shaved because I have to brush it and it’s all knotty.” The keen basketballer, who plays for under-12 Sunbury Jets and Woodend Hawks teams, has been selling $5 wristbands at the Eric Boardman Stadium in Sunbury. She has so far raised more than $1200 of her $2500 goal. Sunbury Jets administrator Erin Pearce said the club “couldn’t be any more proud of Scarlette”. “For someone of her age to do something like this is a big deal,” she said. “I know everyone’s behind her.” Scarlette will get her head shaved during half-time of the Big V opening game of the season, on March 16, at Eric Boardman Reserve. Coliban fined for sewage spill By Jessica Micallef The Kyneton Magistrates Court has ordered Coliban Water to fund a $100,000 environmental project after a burst pipeline sent sewage flowing into Kyneton’s Post Office Creek in July 2016. Environment Protection Authority executive director Damian Wells said EPA prosecuted the water company after an issue at its Jeffery Street pumping station caused more than one million litres of raw sewage to spill in Kyneton. “The pipe burst just before midnight and it

wasn’t until 9am before maintenance workers spotted the lower than usual flows into the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant and raised the alarm,” Mr Wells said. “Coliban Water reported the spill to EPA, and environment protection officers arrived to find a constant flow of fast-running sewage entering Post Office Creek. “The creek was flowing strongly at the time, which helped clear the contamination and Coliban Water pumped contaminated water from affected land. “The company has since installed automatic

alarms at the pumping station and the treatment plant [and] a pump station management plan has been developed.” Coliban Water pleaded guilty to one charge of causing or permitting an environmental hazard. The magistrate didn’t record a conviction but

ordered Coliban Water to publish the details of the case and pay EPA’s legal costs of more than $12,000. Coliban Water was also ordered to pay $100,000 to conduct an Aboriginal Waterway Assessment of the creek and nearby parts of the Campaspe River by Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation. Dja Dja Wurrung chief executive Rodney Carter said the waterway assessment project was “really valuable” to bring together traditional, ecological and scientific knowledge to benefit the creek.

with trauma and are having trouble seeing learning as a priority because of everything else going on in their life,” Ms Macdonald said. “We run school programs and do one-on-one work to help kids reconnect with their learning and understand their own learning processes.” The dogs visit the school every Thursday and work with several students throughout the day. “The kids will teach the dogs a trick and we get to talk about the stages of learning and we also talk about when the dog has a moment of not knowing what to do or confusion,” Ms Macdonald said.

Plans for a revamped Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve have been downgraded after two of the partner sporting groups pulled out. The council agreed in 2016 to contribute $215,000 to build two tennis courts and a basketball/netball court at the reserve, in partnership with Riddells Creek Tennis Club, Riddells Creek Football Netball Club and the Riddells Creek Junior Basketball Association. At the time, the sports clubs agreed to contribute $240,000 towards the total cost. The football netball and basketball clubs have since withdrawn from the project because of a change in priorities. The Riddells Creek Tennis Club has asked that the third court become an additional tennis court and has raised $185,000 towards the cost of building it. Cr Henry Bleek said the additional tennis court would cost the council an extra $120,000. The council’s total contribution would be $330,000. Cr Helen Radnedge said the third court at the reserve was an urgent matter. “The club worked hard to raise $185,000 … [it] will still contribute 32 per cent of the total project if councillors agree to the proposal to construct three tennis courts,” Cr Radnedge said. “It will be cheaper to build three courts now rather than two now and add a third later.” The council voted against increasing its contribution and the revamp will now include only two new tennis courts.

A 60-year-old man has died after he fell from his horse in Carlsruhe on Thursday morning. Police have been told the man was riding his horse along Cobb and Co Road near Anderson Road about 9am. It is believed the horse was spooked, causing the man to fall to the ground. The Woodend man died at the scene. Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

A free shuttle bus service is planned this year by the Macedon Ranges council as it prepares to manage the increased visitation to Macedon and Mount Macedon during autumn. The bus will run on weekends and public holidays between 10am-4pm and stop at the Macedon train station, Honour Avenue, Centennial Park and the Mount Macedon open gardens. The bus will operate for five weeks of the peak autumn season from April to early May.

Portraits help in healing

By Jessica Micallef Memories of a young boy will live on in Kyneton. Eight-year-old Tom Gray died in 2016 following a short battle with brain cancer. His family has collaborated with Kyneton artist Daniel Butterworth and his project to create a series of portraits depicting Tom’s life. “This family, they are grieving and maybe this can help them heal,” Butterworth said.

A Trentham Men’s Shed is a step closer to being built. The future men’s shed has received a $20,000 grant through the federal government’s Stronger Communities Programme. Federal Ballarat MP Catherine King visited the future site of the Cool Country Men Shed last Tuesday to announce the grant. Ms King said she was looking forward to making the shed a “reality” for men throughout the area. “This grant will make a real difference to this community” she said. “The creating of a men’s shed in Trentham will mean there is a new space for men to come together to learn, to support one another, and to engage socially with their community. “Other communities across our region have already seen the benefits that come with the opening of a men’s shed, and I am delighted that those in Trentham and surrounds will be granted the same opportunity. “Well done to all those who were involved in securing this grant.” The site of the future shed is at 55 Mulcahys Road, Trentham. Cool Country Men’s Shed president Tony Johnston said he was hoping construction on the shed would begin in mid March.

The artist said Tom’s parents, Simon and Carly, sent him more than 40 photographs from different stages of Tom’s life on which to base his paintings. “From there I picked out the ones that appealed to me and would work visually,” he said. “There are two or three [portraits] before you really knew there was any physical changes to him, then it started slowly becoming more obvious that something wasn’t right.” The nine portraits will be displayed at Kyneton District Health in an exhibition called Tom’s Life. Tom’s parents hope the exhibition will help raise awareness of brain cancer – and funds to fight it. “It is extremely confronting, but ultimately the exhibition is to raise … funds so there can be more research so that it doesn’t happen to any other children or parents,” Ms Gray said.

Mr Gray said: “Anything we can do, no matter how uncomfortable that makes us feel, we’re going to do it. “All we want is for no one else to sit in that room and hear that news.” Butterworth said he was excited about having the paintings of Tom showcased at Kyneton District Health. “It can do many things – it can heal people,

it can maybe make people aware,” he said. “If I can help people through pain and troubled times by splashing a bit of paint around, I will do it every time.” Tom’s Life will be launched on Thursday, March 7, and will run until Saturday, March 23 at Kyneton District Health, 7-25 Caroline Chisholm Drive, Kynton. Sunbury residents need to listen out for their hearing. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Access Economics, an estimated 6000 Sunbury residents have an undiagnosed hearing loss. Specsavers Sunbury audiologist Stacey Meaney said there were many preventative measures that everyone can take to look after their hearing. “Use hearing protection when mowing the lawn or working on a noisy job site and keep the volume down when listening to music through headphones,” she said. “Don’t use cotton buds to clean your ears and seek medical treatment when you have a suspected ear infection or sudden change in hearing.” As part of Hearing Awareness Week (March 3-9), Ms Meaney is encouraging “all Sunbury residents to come in to Specsavers Sunbury to get a free 15 minute hearing check”. Rupertswood has hit form at the right time in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District First competition. While one of the top sides all season, Rupo has taken it up a notch in recent weeks. Rupo won the top of the table clash with St Anthonys in the previous round then found another level on Saturday, making a massive 8-356 against Gisborne. Daniel Kavanagh made 77, while John Lane and Alex Bond both made half centuries. Jordan Curran and Bert Van Den Heuvel scored 40s. Daniel Nolan took a hat trick for Gisborne, but was expensive going for 4-90 off his 13 overs. Rupo president Peter Kavanagh said things were falling into place. “The runs are being hit at the right time,” he said. “It’s a bonus that it’s several players making runs, in finals you really can’t leave it to one or two players.

“Piz [coach Andrew Pizaro] has been working on that side of things for a long time. “There’s a real good buzz around the club.” Kavanagh said it was good to see some of the younger players such as Alex Bond, Max Howell and Daniel Kavanagh come through. “Alex is one of the young guys that really takes things on board,” he said. “Max is another one. They are both in year 12 and they are hopefully hitting form at the right time. “That’s the first 50 Daniel has scored in a long time.” It was a good day off field for Rupo on Saturday as well, with the club holding a reunion for three of its premiership sides. A win this week would all but assure Rupo of the minor premiership. Only a St Anthonys or Riddell outright win would prevent that. Kavanagh said they didn’t expect to be in this position when, at the start of the season, they made the decision to drop down a division. “Things have panned out well. Piz has had

By Tara Murray Lancefield is the first team through to the Central Highlands Bowls’ top division grand final. In what has been a close competition all season, Lancefield claimed its first victory over Gisborne Red in a number of years to win through to the grand final. Lancefield president Mark Godbolt said it was a massive win for the club. “It was really important,” he said. “The top four teams, and even Kyneton which finished fifth, could beat you on their day. “For us it’s pretty important as it instills belief in the group that we can beat Gisborne, we had lost the last four or five matches against them. “It’s really good.” Lancefield got off to a good start against Gisborne and held on in the second half when things got tight. In the end they won, 108-91, winning three rinks along the way. “To get three rink wins, especially in a final when it always tightens up towards the end, is really good,” Godbolt said. “The last 20 ends it did that, but we were able to keep the foot on the stroke. “We spoke about it at half-time, to hold your position if you’re up, and if behind to keep the pressure on.” Godbolt said it was a really good team performance. Godbolt, Aaron Young and Jeffrey Holmes led the winning rinks for Lancefield, while Matthew Bacon was the winning skip for Gisborne. The grand final is Lancefield’s second in three years, having lost to Gisborne in the 2016-17 season. Godbolt said they had improved a lot since that loss. “That loss hurt a lot,” he said. “We have strengthened our side with some young guys and a few older blokes who have returned to the club. “We’ve got 19 players pushing for the division 1 side, which is really good. We’re in a good position.” Lancefield will face Gisborne Red or Bacchus Marsh in the grand final next weekend. Bacchus Marsh won through to the preliminary final against Gisborne, with a big win against Kyneton Golf. Bacchus Marsh won three rinks on the way to a 109-82 win. Adrian Plowman was the only winning skip for Kyneton Golf.

Godbolt said the grand final would be a good contest, whichever team they faced. In division 2, Bacchus Marsh won through to the grand final with a two shot win against Woodend. Woodend will face Kyneton Red

in the preliminary final, after beating the Macedon Ranges. Gisborne is through to the division 3 grand final and will face the winner of Bacchus Marsh and Romsey.

Sunbury warmed up for finals with a big win against Melton in Bowls Victoria Pennant, division 1, section 1. Sunbury had already shored up second spot, but Melton had plenty to play for as it tried to avoid relegation. Sunbury proved too strong, winning 79 (16)-62 (2). Lee Wesley’s rink won 22-17, Carla Krizanic’s rink won 18-14, while not for the first time this season Todd Trewarne’s rink had a big win, 23-12. Mark Cowan’s rink lost 19-16. Sunbury’s David Glennon said the side did what it had to to get the win. “Sunbury went in wanting … to go into finals on the back of some good form,” he said. “It wasn’t by many, but a win is a win going into finals.” Glennon said Trewarne and Marc Bullows, who were in the same rink, were the two standouts on the day. Sunbury will host Glenroy on Saturday in a semi-final, with the winner to progress through to the grand final on Sunday. Moonee Valley and Brunswick face each other in the other semi-final. Glennon said it would be a good game. “They are a really good side and beat us two, three weeks in Glenroy. “Sunbury beat them earlier in the year at Sunbury, so it’s even stevens this season between the teams.” The top side is one of two Sunbury teams to have made finals, with the Sunbury (3) side making finals in division 3, section 2. Like the top side, it will host a home final on Saturday. It faces Strathmore. A win on Saturday would be enough to earn the side promotion into division 2 next season. “It would be nice to have a division 2 side next season,” Glennon said. “We could have division 1, division 2 and division 3 sides, or even a premier division side along with division 2 and division 3 sides.” Meanwhile, Mark Cowan and Carla Krizanic are through to the finals of the Champion of Champions competition. Jets go into new season as the ones to beat

The Sunbury Jets are readying themselves for a tilt at a third straight Big V women’s state championship title. With the core group of players from last season’s side returning, the Jets look to be one of the favourites in the new-look competition, with several teams joining the new NBL1. Jets guard Monique Stevens, Josie Stockill, Courtenay Wragg, Chelsea Burns, Chloe Tidswell and Orla O’Reilly are returning from last season’s championship team. Stevens said it was key for them to keep their playing group together. “We still have the foundations of the last couple of years which is really important to us,” she said. “We are immersing ourselves, learning new offensive and defensive sets and the new terminology Kennedy [Kereama] has learnt from being in the WNBL.” Stevens only played four games last season because she was pregnant with her first child, but assisted on the sidelines. She is returning to play this season and has

been back on court for about a month “getting back into the run of things”. Courtney Deuver will be back on court for the Jets after missing last season with a knee injury. “She’s super keen to be back,” Stevens said of Duever. “She was training at the back end of last season and super keen to be back on the floor and back in the league.” Emily Conn, who split playing between the youth league and women’s team, will again move between the two sides. She will be joined by Chloe Angove, who has been the standout for the youth league side which claimed back-to-back youth league 2 and youth league 1 championships. In both years Angove was named league most valuable player and grand final most valuable player. Stevens said Angove had impressed during the pre-season. “Chloe has been promoted to the side,” she said.

Cannons stand tall By Tara Murray Before the first bounce of the new-look under-18 football competition the Calder Cannons declared they were “ready to run”. And run they did, winning the opening round of the NAB League Girls competition against Western Jets. The Jets held a one-point lead at quarter-time on Saturday but the Cannons used the breeze in the second quarter, kicking three goals to none to open up an 18-point lead. The Cannons kicked the only goal of the second half, to win 5.7 (37)-1.4 (10). It was all single goal kickers for the Cannons, with Georgie Prespakis and Makeisha Muller named their best. The new competition, which replaces the TAC Cup, will focus on football and providing support in education, wellbeing, high performance and coaching, while increasing opportunities for talented footballers to reach their potential on and off the field. Speaking before the game, Cannons girls talent co-ordinator Russell Humphrey said the group was ready to take to the field for the real stuff. He said they had been happy with the pre-season and the squad they had put together. “It’s so good, so far,” he said. “As a group we’re ready to run. We’ve got a group of 38 players in the end, with 10 under 16 players and 28 under 17s and under 18s. “We have noticed the under-16 players right across the board are a little more talented than the 17s. “I think it will continue to happen every year. As we look to grow the competition and AFLW, the girls at the bottom have to be more talented.” Humphrey said this year’s group was a bit taller and more athletic than the group which finished 10th last year. He said that was the direction of the game at the moment. “The philosophy of the new competition is more about developing players than result-driven. “Though if everything goes right, the results will be better than last year. “We’ve got a taller squad this year. We’re playing a bit of catch up this year as other teams went that way last year. “Girls footy used to be the little bull who would win the ball, now it’s more the athletic player who can run and kick. “In two years’ time it will be different again.” Humphrey said although it was early in the season he believed they already had five or six players that would be on the draft radar. Georgia Patrikios, who is in the AFLW Academy, is expected to be the Cannons’ best draft possibility.

“[She’s] been training week in and week out and proving herself. She’ll be fighting for minutes.” There are a couple of new faces in the Jets line-up, with American Lynn Leaupepe and New Zealander Jacinta Beckley. Leaupepe has been training with the side for a couple of months. “Lynn has been really good,” Stevens said. “She came to tryouts back in November. She had gone to couple of clubs, but decided she wanted to play with us. “She’s jumped on board and added some depth in the guard position. She’s a high energy player.” Beckley will join the Jets after she finishes her season with BEAC Ujbuda in Hungary. The 24-year-old was part of the New Zealand National team in 2015 and 2018. The Jets kick off their season on March 16 against Hume City Broncos, when they will unveil their championship banner. Tara Murray

Sunbury United’s FFA Cup campaign lasted one match, with the side knocked out on Saturday night against Springvale. Entering the competition in round two, Sunbury was quickly on the back foot with Springvale opening the scoring in the first minute. Springvale made it 2-0 in no time, before Sunbury levelled the scores. A goal just before half-time saw Springvale regain the lead. In an even second half, Springvale found the net again to seal a 4-2 win.
