Scouts on the job The 1st Sunbury Scouts will be gathering their garbage bags and gloves as part of Clean Up Australia Day on March 3. Scouts group leader Natasha Di Vito said the annual event was an opportunity for the troop to look after “the environment they’re going to inherit”. “Giving back to the community and being able to do this in a public place that everyone else gets to enjoy as well is really important to them,” she said. Ms Di Vito said one Joey Scout member was making a special effort ahead of the event. Sports hub scores a win By Jessica Micallef The Labor Party will invest $10 million to build the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct in New Gisborne if elected at the federal election. The funding will help build stages one and two of the project, including a synthetic oval and natural grass surface ovals, four indoor sports courts, two tennis and netball courts, a multi-purpose community space, player and referee changerooms, spectator seating and a walking and cycling path.
Macedon Ranges council says the sports precinct is expected to support 68 direct and 93 indirect jobs during construction, more than 30 jobs once it is operational and $59 million in regional economic benefits from construction. Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters and McEwen MP Rob Mitchell visited the New Gisborne site on February 15 to announce the $10 million election promise. Sports precinct advocate Helen Sankey said it was “great news” the project was being supported.
“It’s another piece of the puzzle for what is required to make this project a reality and we welcome the support,” Ms Sankey said. “We’re always playing catch-up … we just don’t have the hours available at our current sport facilities to facilitate our growth. “Our goal is to get an election promise from both sides of the government … we need to look at both sides of government, because without their support this project won’t be a reality.” The $41.4 million project has received support from the Victorian government, AFL Victoria and the Macedon Ranges council.
Macedon Ranges mayor Janet Pearce said the sports precinct needed “federal funding to make it a reality”. “If elected, Labor’s commitment of $10 million will enable stage one of the project to proceed,” Cr Pearce said. “We are hoping the federal government will match or exceed this commitment. “This project will help us deliver on our shared vision for a regional precinct which can meet the current and future needs of the community and be used by a diverse range of groups and people of all ages.”

Council slams recycling service By Laura Michell Hume council has criticised SKM Services for failing to properly manage its recycling plants. Hume is one of 20 Victorian councils that has been forced to rethink how it disposes of kerbside recycling collections after the Environment Protection Authority banned SKM from accepting waste at its Coolaroo and Laverton North sites on February 15. Councils were given less than 24 hours notice of the ban. It is not known when the recycling plants will reopen.

Hume and Whittlesea councils have opted to send recycling collections to landfill, although “The reality is that, in Melbourne, there are only three major players with capacity to provide the recycling service councils need – the EPA has now shut down one and the other two simply
do not have capacity to manage the demand,” the post stated. “We are also frustrated that SKM has accepted contracts, and the money that comes with, but has failed to meet its obligations to manage its recycling process.” Mayor Carly Moore said the council would wait for an EPA investigation into SKM to conclude before making a decision on the future of recycling contracts. The council has blamed continuous state and federal government policy failure for the recycling crisis, adding that government leaders
needed to ensure there was good planning and continuous regulation, as well as policy and investment in the waste management industry to rectify the situation. Whittlesea mayor Lawrie Cox said it was an “unacceptable” situation. He called for the government to find a more sustainable option for recycling. State Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio did not respond to questions regarding the government’s efforts to improve Victoria’s recycling industry. SKM did not respond.

A former air force cadet from Sunbury is on a mission to return his squadron to Hume. Matthew Lillywhite, 19, was a member of Australian Air Force Cadets 407 squadron, which was based at the Maygar Barracks in Broadmeadows. In 2016, the squadron was moved to the Menin Barracks in Moonee Ponds and combined with 416 squadron while officials searched for a new and improved home base for the group. Mr Lillywhite said the squadron was initially told the relocation would last 12 to 18 months. But in late 2018, 407 squadron was decommissioned and its members redeployed to other groups. The decision means young people from Hume must travel to Sunshine, Moonee Ponds

A Department of Defence spokesman said 407 squadron was moved to Moonee Ponds “due to the state of facilities” at Maygar Barracks. “The decision to combine the units was made with the view that should Maygar Barracks be able to provide better options in the future or another site was located in the area, the Australian Air Force Cadets would pursue these options if and when they became available,” he said.
Videos have emerged of Gisborne Secondary College students caught in a schoolyard brawl. The footage, filmed by students, showed a group of students surrounding two boys wrestling each other on the ground. The boys were filmed throwing multiple punches and tackling each other, before a third student threw a punch at the two students. Principal Jon Morley said the behaviour displayed by the students was unacceptable. “It is very disappointing to see video footage of our students behaving in this manner,” Mr Morley said in a statement. “We have taken appropriate disciplinary action with the students involved and have made it clear to all students that this behaviour is entirely unacceptable. “Incidents of this kind are very disappointing and do not reflect the behaviour of the overwhelming majority of our students.” Jessica Micallef

Soul star unplugged Taylor Sheridan is hitting all the high notes. The Gisborne musician has had a love of music since he was 10 years old. “I knew from a really young age that I loved music … after a song would play on the radio, I would sing it straight away and it just sort of stuck to my brain,” Sheridan said. “Everyone else kind of wanted to go kick a footy and play basketball and I wanted to sing and play guitar.” Having released two EPs and multiple singles, he describes his music as “soulfully acoustic”. “I grew up to guys like Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson … soulful singers that I tried to emulate,” he said. “It’s become my vocal DNA. My heart lies with acoustic music … it just feels incredibly
natural to put an acoustic guitar and my voice together.” Sheridan, who recently toured with Pete Murray, will perform at the Macedon Ranges Music Festival. “I am a huge supporter of the Macedon Ranges,” he said. “Coming from Kyneton, I’m born and bred around this area and if it has anything to do with the Macedon Ranges, I will put my hand up … I’m stoked to be a part of it.” The Macedon Ranges Music Festival will be held on Saturday, March 2, at Gisborne Steam Park. Talks on health service merger By Jessica Micallef Kyneton District Health and Hepburn Health Service are exploring a merger. The proposal is aimed at combining the management and governance of the two organisations. The chief executive of both services, Maree Cuddihy, said the possible union would enhance their capabilities “The proposal aims … to meet the needs of our community and improve access to personalised, high quality health care close to home,” Ms Cuddihy said. The amalgamation of the services is expected
to improve the access to a range of health services across the region, provide more job opportunities and more training of nursing, medical and allied health staff. Kyneton District Health board president Peter Matthews said patient care was their main priority. “We aim to improve patient care and achieve positive health outcomes for our community through sustainable, long-term quality services that are locally based,” Mr Matthews said. “A due diligence analysis is being undertaken to assess the clinical, governance, financial, human resource, technological and regulatory impacts of the proposal before any decision.”
Hepburn Health Service board chair Philip Thomson said community consultation would run until March 15. “We encourage the community to participate in the consultation sessions and provide input on the proposal,” Mr Thomson said. “Your feedback is valuable to use and will determine how we can meet future health needs.” Mr Thomson reassured residents that their “hospitals and facilities will remain in place in their current locations”. Brick tick for school Gisborne Primary School is being upgraded, brick by brick. Principal Julie Soutter said the welcome upgrades had been a long time coming. “The school did start to grow rather rapidly with the increase in housing subdivisions around the area and since then it certainly needed it,” she said. An $11.6 million upgrade project started in January with work on stage one, which will include three new classrooms. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas visited the school recently. She said the state government had invested $53 million to upgrade schools throughout the Macedon Ranges since 2014. “These upgrades are part of a major investment in schools right across Macedon,” Ms Thomas said.
“Gisborne students deserve access to state-of-the-art facilities – that’s why the Andrews Labor government has invested over $14 million in Gisborne schools since 2014.” Maddison Architects have been appointed to build stage two of the project, including demolishing the current under-sized gym and replacing it with extra classrooms and building a competition gymnasium. New black bins

General rubbish bins provided by Macedon Ranges council will have black bodies instead of green. Bin lids are red for general rubbish and yellow for recycling. The council is replacing ageing kerbside bins. About 2000 bins required repair and replacement in 2018. The council aims to replace all bins between 2019 and 2023. Residents will be notified of the bin rollout in the coming weeks.

Colourful quilts will be getting an airing at SunFest. The Sunbury Stitchers and Quilters will be out in force, displaying their handmade quilts and wall hangings at the festival for the first time. Member Sheila Millington said that this year the group had decided to do something a little different from its usual biennial show. Ms Millington said the exhibition was called Airing of the Quilts, a reverent nod to quilting tradition. “You get them [quilts] and give them a good airing,” she said. The volunteer-based group donates quilts to charities and organisations.

Hume council is joining the community call for a commitment from the federal government to continue funding four-year-old kindergarten beyond 2019. Currently, four-year-old children are entitled to 15 hours of government-funded kindergarten, consisting of 10 hours of state funding and five hours of federal funding. We W conduct OFIs when appropriate or when our Ve V ndors requests one, but the risks are clearly explained to the Ve V ndor and I would always advise against OFIs when there are children living in the property. Richard and I have attended 3 OFIs recently as we are “house hunting” for one of our children. What an enlightening experience. The first OFI I must say was very well done. The agent stopped us at the front door and requested our names, number & ID - in my opinion this is what should happen. He had a copy of the Ve V ndor Statement, Contract of Sale and the “Collection of Private Information” Statement, This was a good “OFI”. Some weeks later, r we attended the next, r, very ordinary I must say. Certainly the agent asked for name & number but no ID, no Ve V ndor Statement, Contract or Privacy Statement. A very pleasant agent but none-the-less, very ordinary. Now, to the “very bad” OFI. Tw T o weeks ago, we attended another. r r. Once again, very pleasant, but oh my goodness, so badly trained. No names, no numbers, no ID and no Statements whatsoever. r The house in question was r. occupied and fully furnished and we were given free access to the entire property, as were others. As we left, we saw the agent two doors down the road on his phone!! This was a “very bad” OFI with no regard for the well being of the Ve V ndor and their belongings. SPORT Gisborne not there to make up the numbers Gisborne is taking promotion to FFV state league 4 west in its stride. According to coach Danny Ciantar, the Sky Blues are keen to continue the progression they’ve made. “The boys are up for it and they will be competitive,” he said. “We want to consolidate and finish mid-table. Everything else is a bonus. “The last thing you want is to go up and then go straight back down.” Ciantar said a number of juniors were coming through the system, part of the long term goal of the club. “We’ve had an influx of juniors who have started this week. “We’re hoping in the next three to five years we can be playing third division football and we can keep the 14, 15, 16-year-old players who are coming through.”
Ciantar said the senior team had been working hard as it prepares to step up. He said they had been on the track since early January with good numbers at training. “If we get everyone on the park … we will be right. “We’ll be stronger than last year.” Ciantar said they had added half a dozen players, who have all played at higher levels, who will strengthen the side. “We’re looking at these guys and they are coming along nicely. We’re starting to gel.” It’s been a busy pre-season for the Sky Blues with three practice matches so far. On Saturday, they played their first match of the FFA Cup against Springvale City. Springvale got the jump early on, with two first half goals to lead 2-0. It was a closer second half, but the Sky Blues were unable to find the equaliser, losing 3-2.
Matthew Biles, in his debut for the Sky Blues club, was the goalscorer. Before the match, Ciantar said they were going in under strength with several players unavailable or out with injuries. Among those missing was Jake McIntyre, who finished second in the state league 5 west goalscoring last year. Ciantar said McIntyre should be right for the start of the FFV season. “With so many players out and a lot of new guys it will take some time. As long as we’re ready for round one.” Sunbury United will be among the teams that enter the competition in round two. Sunbury last week announced it had signed American Stefan Perri. Perri plays centre back, right back and right winger positions.
Cats take the cream By Tara Murray Macedon struck a massive blow in the battle for top spot in the Gisborne and District Association Jensen Shield Sub-District Firsts. Facing St Anthonys in the battle of the top two teams, it was the Cats that came out on top. The Cats set the win up on day one, making 9-295. Captain Craig Pender said it was a really consistent batting performance. “We had three guys make 50s and then there were others who got some starts. “The last few batsmen sacrificed their wickets … they just went out there swinging. “It was really good to do that. It was a consistent innings.” With the runs on the board, the Cats then did the damage with the ball, restricting St Anthonys to just 164. “Our fielding has been a key point and we have a competitive bowling attack,” Pender said. “To get them out for 164, was another great day. “Kyle Grace, who took 4-27, has been our secret weapon [he] has been really great for us. “There’s been a nice buzz around the club at the moment and he’s a big part of that.” Pender also praised Patrick Doyle, who bowled his first decent spell of the season. He finished with 2-15 off five overs. “It’s great for us to see that, at this point of the season.” The Cats sit on top heading into the final round, six points clear of Sunbury United and St Anthonys and with the best percentage of the three sides. Pender said there was a really good feeling at the club at the moment. “We’re looking good heading into finals, but anything can happen,” he said. “It’s really pleasing for us that … the results are starting to come. “The club is in a great space at the moment and there is a really good atmosphere.” It was a good day for the Cats’ second side which defeated Wallan in Club grade north. Wayne Brundell made 100 not out, in an innings he declared was in honour of his father who died a few weeks ago. In other Jensen Shield matches, Malmsbury suffered a loss to Sunbury United. With both sides inside the top four, United’s 183 proved too much for Malmsbury which was bowled out for 164. Lancefield kept its finals hopes alive with victory against Blackwood. The Tigers made 9-215 in reply to Blackwood’s 174. Blackwood finished 3-125 in its second innings. The Tigers sit three points outside the top four heading into the final round. Rupertswood defeated Kyneton.

Kyneton has missed out on a finals spot in the Central Highland Bowls top division, despite a massive final round win. Kyneton entered the round in fifth place and needed to beat Bacchus Marsh by 18 points or more, and have other results go its way, to sneak into the top four. Kyneton did the job, winning 98 (15)-91 (3), but missed out on the top four by two points with big wins to Kyneton Golf and Lancefield. Gisborne Red, which claimed the minor premiership with a win against Romsey, will play Lancefield in the opening week of finals for a spot in the grand final. Kyneton Golf will play Bacchus Marsh for a spot in the preliminary final. Gisborne Yellow avoided relegation, finishing above Trentham.

The Sunbury Jets have announced a number of key signings ahead of the Big V women’s state championship season. Having already announced the signings of Courtney Duever, Orla O’Reilly, Monique Stevens and American import Lynn Leaupepe, the Jets last week announced several players from last season’s championship side would return. Captain Chelsea Burns heads that list, along with Josie Stockill, Courtenay Wragg and Chloe Tidswell. Chloe Angove, who has won two consecutive Big V youth most valuable player awards, and Emily Conn will combine championship and youth league commitments. The Jets are set to announce one more signing this week. The Jets season starts on March 16 against the Hume City Broncos.

Another Ballarat Football League premiership player is set to join reigning Riddell District Football League premiers Diggers Rest. Alec Del Papa, who has been a key for Bacchus Marsh, has put in a clearance to join the Burras. He joins Darley premiership player Luke Delahey in making the move across. Finals thrill for Bombers By Tara Murray Riddell has sealed a Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts finals berth with a thrilling win against Ashfield. A lot was on the line for both sides, with Ashfield trying to stay in touch with the top four heading into the final round. It was Riddell, the home team, that came away with the points after winning by eight runs. Bombers president and first XI player David King said it was an important victory. The Bombers were defending 168 after not performing as well as they would have liked on day one. Ashfield looked in control after day one and resumed at 1-37, before being bowled out for 160. King said that not for the first time the Bombers’ bowlers stood up. “We bowled really well and tight and ended up getting wickets,” King said. “It got tight in the end.” Heath Brown was a marathon man for the Bombers, taking 4-63 off 31 overs that included 11 maidens. King said Matthew Lloyd also bowled well to take two wickets, while King took three himself. Jason King top scored for Ashfield with 33 not out. The Bombers are third on 80.95 points, just under four points behind top side Rupertswood – meaning a top-two spot and home final is still a possibility for the Bombers. King said to even make finals this season had been a success. The Bombers dropped a division for this season after losing a big chunk of its senior playing group. “We haven’t batted well and made huge scores this season, but our bowling has been able to restrict the opposition and get wickets,” King said. Captain Daniel Fisk, who missed the game, is expected to return for this week’s game against bottom-placed Eynesbury Eagles. In a bonus for the Bombers, Ben Radford is expected to be available for finals. Rupertswood is in prime position to finish on top after beating St Anthonys. In the battle between the top two sides, Rupo scored an 11-run win. The Saints resumed at 0-10 in reply to Rupo’s 199, but fell just short, bowled out for 188. Bacchus Marsh all but sealed its finals spot with a huge win against the Eynesbury Eagles. Having made 9-232, the Bulls bowled the Eagles out for 52. The Eagles hit 4-92 in their second innings. East Sunbury got home against Gisborne. Needing 183 for victory, the Thunder finished 7-184, Brandon Nicholls top scoring with 55. The win moves the Thunder above Gisborne on the ladder.

Sunbury enjoys a bounce back Sunbury is back among the winners in Bowls Victoria Pennant, division 1, section 1. After a rare loss the week before, Sunbury was pushed all the way by Werribee on Saturday, one of the division’s bottom sides. The teams split the rinks two apiece, but Sunbury came away with an 84 (14)77 (4) win. Mark Cowan’s rink was the big winner for Sunbury, dominating with a 31-10 win, while Todd Trewarne’s rink won 22-17. Carla Krizanic’s rink lost 22-15 and Lee Wesley’s rink lost 28-16. Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was good to get back on the winners’ list. “It was always going to be difficult heading out to Werribee on their synthetic green,” he said. “They are fighting relegation as well. Any win out there would have been good.” Glennon said Paul Long, who played in Mark Cowan’s rink, was the standout in the win. The result doesn’t change Sunbury’s position on the ladder – it secured a top two spot weeks ago. It does, though, all but end Sunbury’s chances of claiming the minor premiership. Sunbury is 17 points behind ladder leader Moonee Valley heading into the final round. For a second straight week, Sunbury will face a side trying to avoid relegation, this time it’s Melton. Sunbury’s second side will also have a home semi-final, though its fifth side will be relegated. Sunbury’s Krizanic and Lisa Trewarne are through to finals of the Northern Gateway Ladies pairs. Woodend’s top order collapse puts the pressure on Woodend let slip an opportunity to all but seal a finals spot in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. Sitting in fourth spot heading into the second last round, a win against Romsey would have put Woodend in the box seat to hold off final round opponent Diggers Rest Bulla. Instead, Woodend has just a 2.72 per cent lead over the Burras, with the winner of that match to play finals. Woodend’s Greg Matthews said they had their opportunities to knock off Romsey. Chasing 328, Woodend was bowled out for 315. “We thought if we could bat the 80 overs we could get the runs,” Matthews said. “We got into a position to get on top in the
match. We were 7-300, but at the end of the day we couldn’t get it done.” However, 7-300 was a long way from earlier in the day when Woodend was in trouble at 5-70. Matthews said the top order collapse proved costly. “We spoke about it, that you can’t lose clumps of wickets and that’s what happened,” Matthews said. Warren Else was the standout for Woodend finishing 106 not out. The loss leaves Woodend in an early elimination final. The winner of Woodend and Diggers Rest Bulla will take that last finals spot. Matthews said Diggers Rest Bulla would be full of confidence.
“We lost to Diggers Rest earlier in the season,” he said. “They are obviously coming off a good win which will give them confidence and they are playing at home. “We need to bring our A-game.” After making the grand final last year, Matthews said missing this year’s finals would be frustrating. “At the start of the season we set out to make finals and it would be pretty disappointing not to make them,” he said. In other matches, Diggers Rest Bulla kept its finals hopes alive with an upset win against Gisborne. Needing 194 to win, the Burras managed to get the job done seven wickets down, bowled out for 220.
Sunbury has all but sealed its spot in the top grade with an outright win against Wallan. Needing 12 runs for first innings points on day two, the Roar passed it with ease, bowled out for 159, a lead of 39. Wallan then made 7-141 in its second innings, with Sunbury finishing 4-103 to seal an outright win. Sunbury now sits nearly 16 points clear of the bottom-placed Magpies. Bacchus Marsh sealed top spot with a massive win against Sunbury United. Needing 160 for victory, the Bulls smashed 4-348 and Alex Porter finished unbeaten on 161. Tara Murray

Dealing, these days, mainly with SUVs that would run a mile rather than tackle tough terrain, it was good to get behind the wheel of a genuine off-road wagon in the shape of the Isuzu MU-X. While celebrating a decade of business in Australia, as well as noting feedback from local customers, Isuzu Ute Australia (IUA) has upgraded its D-Max utility and MU-X seven-seat sports utility vehicle to maintain growth in two of the most competitive market segments – one-tonne ute and large SUV. The D-Max ute has come in for most work, with cues being taken from its MU-X SUV mate. Both come in LS-M, LS-U and LS-T variants, the ute with an SX strain added. Manual or automatic versions are on offer with two or all-wheel drive. Prices start at $42,900, plus on-road costs, for the entry-level MU-X LS-M 4x2 auto and top out at $56,200 for the LS-T 4x4 auto. The latter was on test. Styling ‘Hold the chrome’ appears to be the mantra styling whizzes have worked with, the MU-X far from fleshed out with unnecessary tacky shiny bits. The frontal décor, for example, is limited to simple trapezoidal radiator surrounds with the Isuzu brand mark to the fore. The latest in hi-tech LED daytime running lights and bi-LED automatic levelling projector headlamps flank the stylish set-up, while out the back, extra-bright LED taillights help to keep the MU-X in plain sight of any other road user day or night. Engines/transmissions With Isuzu being the world’s largest maker of trucks and diesel engines, MU-X models have the benefit of the maker’s exclusive 3-litre turbo diesel 4JJ1-TC engine — generating 130 kW and 430 Nm — mated with the Aisin AWR6B45 six-speed automatic transmission.
