CFA corners the market The Macedon CFA flea market is on again, with a fresh new look. Macedon CFA captain Ross Luke said the market, now in its 51st year, is one of the brigade’s major fundraisers. “It’s become a bit of a Macedon tradition over the years,” Mr Luke said. “We’ve used the funds from the flea market to [make] improvements to the station … and replace and upgrade our brigade-owned tankers and to purchase vital firefighting equipment such as breathing apparatus.” Mr Luke said the 2019 flea market will include a new twist on an old favourite – the second-hand items auction will now be a goods and services auction. “We’ve got brigade members or local businesses who have donated services and it could be things from grass cutting to car detailing … it’s a whole range of things,” he said. “We utilise a lot of the skills from the brigade members and we’ll auction that off instead. “We have food, cakes, plants … ” Mr Luke encouraged everyone to visit the market and support their local CFA. The market will be held on February 23 at the Macedon CFA, corner of Smith and Victoria streets. Stalls open at 9am and auctions begin at 10.30am. PATRICK, 1

EPA busts recycling plant By Laura Michell Macedon Ranges council is reassuring residents that recyclable items placed in their yellow bins will continue to be processed as normal. The assurances follow an Environment Protection Authority order last week for recycling company SKM services to stop accepting waste materials at its Coolaroo and Laverton North sites. Its plants are used by councils across the state including Hume, Macedon Ranges, Brimbank, Wyndham and Hobsons Bay. About 5000 tonnes of recycling is sent to the Coolaroo and
Laverton North plants each week. The company also operates a site in Mornington. The Coolaroo recycling plant was the site of three fires in 2017, including a major blaze in July that covered parts of the northern suburbs in acrid smoke and forced Dallas residents out of their homes. The fire burned for 11 days. After the July fire, the Victorian government’s Resource Recovery Facilities Audit Taskforce inspected the Coolaroo site 47 times, and as a result the EPA issued 12 notices relating to clean-up of the site, stormwater issues and stockpile configuration. ALL NEW
EPA chief executive Cathy Wilkinson said officers recently inspected SKM’s Coolaroo and Laverton North sites and found large stockpiles of combustible materials stored without appropriate separation between stockpiles, buildings or the premises’ boundaries. She said the waste stockpiles posed a significant risk and challenge for firefighters if ignited. “EPA has determined that these stockpiles are in breach of the waste management policy that has been in place since August 2017,” Dr Wilkinson said. “As the regulator, EPA’s view is that SKM has
fallen short of meeting the requirements of the policy, which is completely unacceptable and poses a real risk to local communities.” SKM will be unable to accept waste until the EPA has confirmed the sites comply with the waste management policy. Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the government was assisting councils with contingency plans so there is no disruption to kerbside recycling collections. Macedon Ranges chief executive Margot Stork said the council was working closely with its waste contractor to ensure the SKM closure didn’t impact residents.

More options for Kyneton buses By Jessica Micallef Kyneton bus services are set to double with the introduction of more than 100 new services a week, including a new bus route to Trentham. The current Wednesday to Friday bus network will expand to six days, operating Monday to Saturday, from April 1. Buses will also operate for extended hours, with services starting at 6.20am and running through to 7.20pm on weekdays. Timetables will be adjusted to connect with
V/Line trains and most routes will receive six new return services on Saturdays. Other additions include the route one bus to Kyneton station merging with the route 4 bus to Kyneton North, removing the need for passengers to change buses. More services will connect Kyneton train station, with a bus connection until 3.21pm on weekdays. A new bus stop will also be built outside the Tylden General Store and the Kyneton Medical Centre on Market Street.

The Trentham to Kyneton bus route has been planned to give residents easier access to services in both towns including, train stations, town centres, schools and health services. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said more
services across extra days will better connect Kyneton commuters. “The new Kyneton bus network is delivering better public transport for the Kyneton community and better connections to trains, schools and health services,” Ms Thomas said. “We’re improving public transport across Trentham and Kyneton, making it easier for residents to get around.” New timetables and maps outlining the service changes will be available from March 1 at www.ptv.vic.gov.au

Sunbury Sergeant Kimberley Hunting said the event, hosted by local police, was a chance for children to have a safe and fun night out. “It started with a group of volunteers through Victoria Police,” she said. “It is to engage with the youth and to also show them that police are approachable and we can also have fun and give them

Residents are being urged to stay on alert for dodgy tradies. Julie Thomas is one of four western suburb residents who say they fell victim to a tradesman advertising on Facebook who took deposits but did not complete the promised work. Ms Thomas, who last week received a refund of her $1000 deposit after she threatened to go to police, warned others to be vigil. “It took me weeks to get a refund but others might not be so lucky,” she told Star Weekly. “I did some research and found out that the ABN numbers for the business were false and the business names used in the advertisements were deregistered.” Three more complainants messaged Ms Thomas after she posted a warning on various Facebook pages. Leading Senior Constable Jo Mutsaets urged residents to report any incidents to police. She encouraged locals to do their homework before handing over a deposit. “This type of crime is one that often goes unreported because it’s victims are usually elderly or they are embarrassed that they could have been misled in that way,” Senior Constable Mutsaets said. “We would ask that residents stay vigilant and report any dodgy tradesperson.” She warned residents to be weary of tradespeople who offer very cheap home repair services such as driveway resurfacing, roof repairs or painting, ask for cash up front and put pressure on to do the work that day. Other tell-tale signs include no proof of identity, not allowing customers time to check credentials or offering to drive with residents to the bank.

Green light for Calder works By Jessica Micallef Local campaigners have welcomed a $50 million boost from the federal government to ease traffic on the Calder Freeway. Upgrades, including adding extra lanes will be built on the freeway between Gap Road, Sunbury and the M80 Ring Road. Calder Action Group president and Sunbury resident Ian Sutherland said he was “delighted” the Calder Freeway would receive an upgrade. However, Mr Sutherland said building a Calder Park Drive overpass on to the freeway
was still his main priority. “It’s been a campaign since the Kings Road overpass opened, which was around 2012, and we’ve made a lot of overtures to the state government in particular,” he said “They’re talking about congestion and the overpass is the first step in relieving it.” Mr Sutherland said the group wrote a letter to the federal government, outlining the need for an overpass on and off the freeway. “They responded with, ‘Until the state government puts some priority on the changes, we’re a bit handicapped’ … and in a sense,
the state government has still not committed themselves to the project within any time scales or funding,” he said. “We’ve written regularly for six months and that’s been the situation up till now. “The Calder Park Drive overpass has been estimated at about $200 million, but that comprises the overpass, a four lane overpass also on the railway line,” Mr Sutherland said. He said his goal was to get the overpass built “first”, but he also wanted more attention drawn to the Maribyrnong River and Green Gully Road bridges over the freeway.

Reading all about it Book yourself a date with one of the most popular novels in the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges libraries. Hume council has released a list of last year’s top-10 most borrowed books from its libraries. The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn, follows the life of Anna Fox as she tries to uncover the truth behind the frenzied screams that ripped through her home, placed first on the list. The 22nd Jack Reacher book, The Midnight Line by Lee Child placed second, which takes the reader on the journey of a former military policeman investigating the illegal opioid trade. Harlen Coben’s mystery novel Don’t Let Go – about Napoleon Dumas’ journey to find out the truth behind the deaths of his twin brother Leo and Leo’s girlfriend Diana - wrapped up the top three. Hume mayor Carly Moore said she
encouraged “everyone to rediscover their local libraries”. “Our libraries are for the enjoyment of the entire community, offering lots of borrowing options, plus events and activities … they are simply amazing,” she said. Cr Moore said Hume’s digital collection was “becoming increasingly popular” throughout 2018, after there was a 79 per cent increase in digital loans compared with 2017. In the Macedon Ranges libraries, The Midnight Line by Lee Child, Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty and The Dry by Jane Harper were the top three most borrowed books in January 2019. Funds secure road upgrade Kyneton drivers will benefit from an intersection upgrade and road rebuild on Heathcote-Kyneton Road. The $1 million project has received funding under the state government’s Regional Roads Victoria fund. Construction has started and the upgrades should increase safety and visibility at the Ennis and Redesdale roads intersections on Heathcote-Kyneton Road. A new traffic island, lighting, drainage, fresh line marking and a 500 metre section of round foundation will be installed, which is expected to increase the strength and durability of the route. Traffic management will be in place with speeds reduced to 40km/h until construction is completed, which is expected to be by June. There will be temporary closures on Redesdale Road and Ennis Road. This project follows a $3.6 million package from the state government to rebuild 6.5 kilometres of road between Kyneton and Redesdale in 2018. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the state government was making Heathcote-Kyneton Road “safer and stronger for the 1400 drivers that rely on it every day”. “[We are] spending more than ever upgrading our regional roads, with major works taking place right across Macedon,” Ms Thomas said.
… it’s the biggest stage - Kyle Parkinson for the sport

“I feel pretty extraordinary,” Parkinson said. “My goal was to make the world championships … it’s the biggest stage for the sport.” Parkinson qualified for the world championships at the Ironman 70.3 at Penrith, New South Wales, in November. “It was a 1.9-kilometre swim, 90-kilometre bike ride and a 21-kilometre run,” Parkinson said. “It took me five hours and 40 minutes to complete.” Ironman events are not part of the Olympics, but that hasn’t deterred the young athlete. “To win my age group or go professional in the sport would be the dream,” he said. The world championships will be held on September 7 and 8. Details: bit.ly/2X3yIeV

MY PLACE Anne Phelan is no stranger to our screens, having featured in Winners and Losers and Prisoner. The Romsey resident chats with Jessica Micallef about her acting career and her favourite aspects of the country life. What is your connection to Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges?
and then I just went along with many amateur groups and it built up to lead roles in musicals. Then I had a call from someone who said, ‘do you want to do a play and get paid for it’. I was 21 then. I just sort of fell in.
I moved to Romsey in 1982 so it’s been 37 years. I needed somewhere I could commute to Melbourne because most of my work is in the city. Some friends of mine had moved to Lancefield and I was bringing mum up to have lunch in 1981 and I stopped at the real estate agent. Romsey’s the ideal distance from Melbourne. You’re still in the country but in 50 minutes you’re on Flemington Road.
What has been your favourite role to play? There’s no one. There are some special ones. Certainly The Harp In The South and Poor Man’s Orange will be up there because they were from beautiful books and they were beautifully done. Sometimes it’s the little unknown ones you remember the most.
What are some of the best things about Romsey?
What are you passionate about? I’ve always been very involved with the union, Actors Equity. And often through the union, I was very involved with the Patron of Positive Women Victoria which is a support group for women living with HIV. And coming from the entertainment industry, HIV and Aids hit us very early on and very quickly. I was also one of the early members of Actors for Refugees which was a group of actors … and what we actually did was tell the stories of the asylum seekers in their words.
How did it feel to win eight Best Actress Awards? Wonderful. I find people who knock awards have never won one because it is quite thrilling. What would people be surprised to know about you? (Shawn Smits)
I think even though it’s grown, and I knew it had to grow because it was so close, travel wise, to Melbourne, it’s still got the country town feel. You don’t pop up the street to get a carton of milk and think you’re going to be away for 10 minutes because you’re going to be chatting to people. I’ve always felt very comfortable here and of course up in the ranges it’s just beautiful.
That I’ve worked at four pubs in the Macedon Ranges behind the bar. So we’re talking 30 years ago and because actors are often out of work … I’ve got no money, that might surprise people.
ANNE PHELAN WITH TILLY
Tell me a bit about your acting career. I left school early when I was 15. I played a lot of sport when I was a teenager and I was the captain of the badminton team in West Melbourne. I got a phone call from a bloke one night and he said he was from an amateur musical company and they used the same hall that we played badminton in. He wanted an
extra night and he rang the parish priest – it was a church hall – and said, ‘can we have an extra night’ and the priest said, ‘you better ring Anne Phelan’. I said ‘no that’s fine’ and he said ‘Phelan, are you in any relation to Barry and Peter’ and I said, ‘yes they’re my older brothers’ He said ‘I went to school with them … and if you’re a Phelan you can sing and we need singers’. So I joined the backrow of the chorus
If you could change one thing about the area what would it be? That’s a hard one. I think there’s been some hideous planning mistakes and allowing certain types of buildings to be built. The only things I would change is to get the pub open. We’re a town without a pub which us unheard of and un-Australian.

SPORT Jets ready to fly after luring key recruits to the club
Ish Sanders is a big inclusion for the Sunbury Jets. (Shawn Smits)
The Sunbury Jets will have a different look this season in Big V men’s division 1. After a tough 2018, the Jets have reshaped their roster, headlined by a couple of returning players. The two big inclusions are Ish Sanders and Kris Blicavs. Sanders dominated in his one season at the Jets in 2016, averaging 28 points a game, while Blicavs has played at higher levels after playing with the Jets in his junior days. Coach Ryan Addison said they were excited by their inclusion. “Ish is a great recruit for the club and is a really good scorer,” he said. “Kris is a Sunbury boy coming back to the club. I was lucky enough to play with him and bringing him back is a big part of what we’re trying to do. “They are two of the better guards in the competition. Both are pretty smart players who both want to win.”
Addison said the return of Blicavs was part of a focus to try and bring Sunbury juniors who may have gone elsewhere back to the program. Arthur Trousdell and Benjamin Jones are among the key players from last season to return. Addison said it would be good to have both for the full season. Joining them in the senior line-up are Nathan Baker, Nathan Marshall and Ivanne Loncaric. All three played key roles in the Jets’ youth league side’s grand final run last year. Baker, who has previously played in the senior team, was named in the youth league division 1 All-Star Five team last year. The Jets will complete their roster in the coming weeks. Addison said they still had room for three more players and were looking to add a bit more height to the squad. “We’d like to get a couple of forwards/
centres,” he said. “It’s always a challenge to get players to Sunbury. We are speaking to some players to come across and a couple of them have played in the championship division.” Despite the roster being incomplete, Addison said he was confident they would improve on last season, when they finished 12th with just six wins. “It’s a really different team to last year’s team. Last year we had a lot of players in their first or second year. “We’ve got some real experienced guys back and we’ve had a good pre-season. “Hopefully the group will have a different feel to it. The group will decide where they want to go and drive the behaviours and values. “I expect to see a competitive team and I’m confident with the group we’ve put together, we could potentially be a really good side.” Tara Murray
A First class battle By Tara Murray The battle for top spot in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts is evenly poised after day one of the match between St Anthonys and Rupertswood. The two best sides all season, just over four points separated St Anthonys and Rupertswood heading into the second last round of the season. Both sides had periods of dominance on day one, with Rupertswood bowled out for 199. Rupo started well and were travelling nicely at 2-70 before some quick wickets put the Saints back in the game. Rupo’s lower order added some much-needed runs as they pushed the score towards 200. Jack Hudd top-scored with 38 before being run out, while Michael Treweek made 37, coming in at number three. The Saints had to face four overs at the end of the day, and finished 0-10 at stumps. Ashfield did its hopes of sneaking into the top four no harm. Needing to win and have other results go its way, fifth-placed Ashfield is poised to cause an upset against third-placed Riddell. Riddell was bowled out for 168, with youngster Samuel Dempsey doing most of the damage making 84. Joel Muir was the pick of the bowlers for Ashfield, taking 3-18 off five overs. Ashfield started well with the bat and will resume at 1-37. Corey Woolley (16) and Nathan Crosland (3) are the not out batsmen. East Sunbury finds itself in a similar position to Ashfield, after day one of its match with Gisborne. The Thunder bowled Gisborne out for 182 in the 54th over. Matthew McDonald top scored with 35. Cody McDorman took 5-67 for the Thunder, with Lachie Wilkins chipping in with three wickets. The Thunder will resume at 1-38 as they look for their third win of the season. Jack Dillon and Josh Smith are the not out batsmen, on 14 and nine respectively. Bacchus Marsh needs victory against Eynesbury Eagles to cement its spot in the top four. The Bulls, the team likely to fall out of the top four if Ashfield breaks in, are in control after day one against the winless Eagles. The Bulls made 9-232 with Draw Colster top scoring with 42. Six players got starts, scoring at least 24. Brandon Shearson and Jason Tardrew took three wickets each for the Eagles.

Sunbury teen a rising star It hasn’t taken Madison Prespakis long to have an impact in the AFLW competition, with the Blues star nominated for the AFL Women’s Rising Star award in her second match. The Sunbury teenager has looked right at home in her first two matches, among the Blues’ best in both matches. On Sunday against Adelaide, Prespakis had 20 possessions, including 10 contested possessions, eight clearances and a goal. It was enough to earn her a rising star nomination alongside Fremantle’s Sabreena Duffy. Prespakis had 13 possessions in her opening game against North Melbourne in round one. In both matches Prespakis has received coach’s votes for her performances. Speaking to the media last week, Prespakis said she was enjoying the challenge of finally living out her childhood dream. “It’s been a big challenge, even a step up from VFLW,” she said. “Personally I’ve loved the challenge of it. I’m working as hard as I can.” Prespakis said she had been happy with how she had fitted into the Carlton team, the AFLW environment and her performances so far. “I was really impressed with my performance on the weekend and obviously went into last weekend going in playing my own game within the team structure. Playing the way I wanted to play,” she said. Prespakis, who played her junior football with Romsey Junior Football Club, the Sunbury Lions and Calder Cannons, was taken at pick three in last year’s AFLW draft. Michael Treweek was a key for Rupertswood coming in at number three. (Mark Wilson)

Bowlers go on attack By Tara Murray The bowlers controlled the day in the clash of the bottom sides in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. With both Sunbury and Wallan fighting for their future in the top grade, the bowlers stepped up, taking 17 wickets for the day. It has set up an interesting fight for first innings points, with Sunbury needing 12 runs, while the Magpies need two wickets. For Sunbury captain-coach Brad Hunter the day was a representation of their overall season. “We let ourselves down with the bat again,” he said. “There’s been five times this season we’ve been in winning positions and either weather or inexperience we haven’t been able to get the win.” Wallan’s innings came to an end at 9-120 with the side only having 10 players at the ground. Jason McGann stood strong taking 5-49. Hunter was full of praise for the veteran. “It’s the third game in a row that he has taken a five-for. He’s got the fire in the belly. “We’re trying to get the juniors through [and] he’s taken over the bowling stocks and teaching them, and then doing it on Saturday.” Hunter said they had hoped to get the runs with less than the loss of four wickets. Instead the Roar find themselves in a fight and will resume at 8-111. The Roar had a couple of nervous overs at the end of the day with Jason McGann having to leave the game early, leaving them with no batsmen in the shed. Hunter said they were confident of getting the job done this week. “The first job is to make sure we get the 12 runs and get the job done. “We’ve still got Jason in the shed and Jason McGowan and Kyle Corcoran can both bat. “We’ve got two guys with 15 years’ experience out of the three batsmen left.” A win this weekend should be enough to make sure the Roar stay in the top grade next season. Hunter said while they were keen to stay in the top grade, they had achieved something very important this year. “We wanted to bring through the young kids,” he said. “We had four under the age of 20. “We could have won a few more games if we had that extra experience. We’ve stuck to that policy and the kids are getting the experience and we’ve seen the improvement in them.” In other matches, Bacchus Marsh is 0-30 in reply to Sunbury United’s 159. Gisborne made 193 against Diggers Rest Bulla, as both sides look to shore up finals spots. Romsey had a day out with the bat, making 328 against Woodend.

Cats coach leads league Macedon coach Ben Tankard has been appointed the Riddell District Football League’s interleague coach for this year. Tankard, who led the Cats to a preliminary final last year, was last week announced as the league’s coach for its WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championship clash against the Southern Football Netball League in May. Tankard said he was excited to coach the best players in the league. “I am very passionate about showcasing the Riddell District Football Netball League and trying to climb the rankings again this season,” he said. “There are some really good footballers running around in this league and hopefully we can get a lot of those players on the park and show everyone how strong the league is.” League football operations manager Jordan Doyle was elated to have Tankard on board. “The RDFNL are very excited to have Ben as the senior interleague coach for 2019,” Doyle said. “He brings a wealth of experience to the role from his playing days and as a coach, and we are confident that he will do a great job. “We face a big challenge against the SFNL who are a strong and proud league with a rich history, and we hope that Ben’s appointment will encourage the best players across the RDFNL competition to be involved in the 2019 senior interleague campaign.” Tankard replaces Arron Bray as the league’s interleague coach. Bray coached the side to two wins in as many years. The RDFL will host the interleague clash, with the location still to be decided. Both teams are coming off wins, with the RDFL beating the Central Highlands Football League and the Southern FNL defeating the North Central FNL. Jason McGann was again the star with the ball for Sunbury.

Sunbury unable to make up lost ground in race to top Sunbury’s hopes of claiming the Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 minor premiership have suffered a setback. Coming off its best win of the season against Moonee Valley, Sunbury was made to work hard against finals aspirant Glenroy on Saturday. All four rinks were close all day, with Glenroy coming away with the upset 80 (16)-71 (2) win. Carla Krizanic’s rink was the only winning one for Sunbury, winning 21-20. Lee Wesley’s rink lost 23-22, Mark Cowan’s rink lost 19-13, while Todd Trewarne’s rink had a rare loss, 18-15. Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was tough day for the side, with Glenroy having a lot more to play for. “It was close all day, with only six, three, one and one shots separating the sides. “It’s always quite difficult to beat Glenroy at Glenroy. They are looking to try and play finals. “It could be a dress rehearsal for a couple weeks’ time. It’s tight and there’s about four
clubs at this stage fighting for finals spots.” Glennon said there was no standouts for Sunbury in the loss, the team’s third this season. The loss, coupled with Moonee Valley’s 18-0 win against Melton, gives Moonee Valley a 15-point lead at the top of the ladder with two rounds remaining. Sunbury and Moonee Valley have traded the top spot in recent weeks, having opened up a massive gap on the rest of the competition. With a weekend loss Sunbury slipped to second, but can’t fall any lower than that. Glennon said with two rounds remaining, it would be hard for Sunbury to overtake Moonee Valley and regain top spot. Sunbury this week faces Werribee, which is trying to avoid relegation. It then faces another side trying to avoid relegation, Melton, in the final round It was a mixed day for Sunbury sides, with three of its six sides winning. Sunbury’s second side had an 80 (14)-70 (4)
win against Yarraville-Footscray 3 in division 3, section 1 to keep its finals hopes alive. They sit sixth on the ladder, 19 points behind fourth. Sunbury’s third side had a 94 (16)-71 (2) win against Strathmore in division 3, section 2. Sunbury 3 sits well clear in second place and will host a home final. It is still a chance to finish in top, currently 12 points behind Moonee Valley (2). Sunbury (4) also remains in the finals hunt after a massive 96 (17)-39 (1) win against Essendon (5). The win leaves Sunbury sitting sixth, 11 points behind fourth, with two rounds remaining. Tara Murray

New-look Cats ready to make their mark
Matthew Hutchesson is a key inclusion for Macedon. (Shawn Smits)
Macedon is again hoping to be among the contenders in the Riddell District Football League. Having made the preliminary final under first year coach Ben Tankard, the Cats are looking to change things up this year. Tankard, who took over the role with a premiership side, said he was looking forward to this season. “There was little time to get my head around the game plan,” he said. “I consider last year a success … the second year was always going to be me putting my touch on the side. “You will see a different Macedon with a different style of football.” The Cats have kept most of their playing group, but two of their biggest names have departed. Casey Summerfield has returned to his former club Gisborne, while Errol McConnell has also moved on.
While big losses, Tankard said they were sure they could cover them. “We sort of prepared for them last year,” he said. “Casey missed a lot of the season, while Errol didn’t play the second half of the season. “We found some depth and they’ve already got the runs on the board.” Among those to fill those roles are Jordie Watkins and Zach Smedley. Tankard said Smedley went under the radar last season, but he was one of the premier midfielders in the competition. Jason Cooke is another that Tankard expects to step up. Cooke played just seven games after returning from St Albans mid season. “Jason will be predominately played as a forward, who can pinch hit in the middle. “He’s been one of our leaders during the pre-season.” Another standout in the pre-season has been forward Matthew Knox.
Tigers keep hopes alive By Tara Murray Lancefield is hoping to finish the season on a high, and earn a finals berth in the process, in Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield Sub District Firsts. Sitting in sixth, nine points outside the top four, the Tigers need a bit of luck to go their way to sneak into the top four. Tigers’ captain Ryan Millar said they know what the equation is heading into the final two games of the season. “To keep the season alive we have to win our final two games and it gives us a chance. “We’re hoping results will go our way and hopefully seal a finals berth.” The Tigers started well in their quest to win their final two matches, and are on top against Blackwood after day one. While Blackwood sits bottom of the ladder, Millar said they weren’t a team to take lightly. The Tigers bowled Blackwood out for 174. “That’s about par on our ground,” Millar said. “We bowled really well and it’ll be a good challenge for us to try and chase it down.” Luke Harrison was the pick of the bowlers with 3-35, while three other players took two wickets each. The Tigers got off to the worse start with the bat and were in trouble at 2-5. They steadied to be 2-48 at stumps. Millar said they were confident of getting the job done. “We’re confident with the team that we have in we can get the runs against any team,” he said. “We would rather be zero or one wicket down [but] After losing two wickets in the first three overs, the main thing was not to lose any more wickets and not worry about the runs. “To be 2-48 is a bonus and we’ve still got eight wickets in hand. “If we can get the runs in this game it keeps the finals hopes alive.” Jarryd McGill will resume on 24 not out, with Millar 18 not out. A finals berth would be a win for the Tigers who dropped down from the top division in the off season after losing a number of players. Millar said the Jensen Shield was the right level for them to be playing at this stage. “We’ve been competitive in most matches,” he said. “Anyone can beat anyone, and with the young guys in the side we’re starting to gel together as a team. “We’re not being smashed around, so we’re at the right level at this point of time with our younger guys getting exposure with both the bat and ball.” Millar said Lachlan Bendeich and Cameron Stein were two of the younger players benefitting for the opportunities they are getting. He said the two had been part of the senior

side for most of the season. “Lachie with the bat and ball has been really good,” he said. “He’s been opening our bowling all season. He takes everything on board and tries to do it. “Cam is at training every week and has shown some bits and pieces.”
18 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 19, 2019
In other matches, Macedon again piled on the runs, this time against St Anthonys. Playing for top spot, the Cats made 9-295 from their overs with Brett McKay top scoring with 67. Malmsbury is 1-29 in reply to Sunbury United’s 183.
Aaron Johnston, who missed the finals campaign, is another expected to have an impact up forward. On the other side, Tankard said they were excited by the new recruits. Two-time Strathmore premiership player Karl Staudt will bring experience to the Cats. Matthew Hutchesson, who was in the Western Region Football League team of the year, is another who has come across. Tankard said they had added a bit of an ex-factor with Louis Bongiovanni. “I don’t know much about him, he was a Macedon junior,” he said. “He went and played college basketball and had been playing a lot of basketball. He gave me a call out of the blue. “He has a great attitude and will probably start in the reserves and we’ll … fast track him.” The Cats start their season on April 6 against Riddell. Tara Murray
Four into three doesn’t go The battle for Central Highlands Bowls division’s top grade finals spots will go down to the final round of the season. Only top side Gisborne Red is assured of a finals place, with Bacchus Marsh, Lancefield, Kyneton Golf and Kyneton fighting it out for the other three. Gisborne Red remains on top of the ladder heading into the final round, despite a big loss to Bacchus Marsh, 98 (15)-83 (3). Simon Cornock and Daniel Willis led winning rinks for Bacchus Marsh, while Phil Minniti shared the points in his match with Graham Quaife. Tim Rogers was the winning skip for Gisborne Red. The win moved Bacchus Marsh to 161 points, three points behind Gisborne Red. Gisborne Red picked up three points in the loss, which proved vital to assure their finals spot with one round remaining. While they sit 17 points clear of fifth-placed Kyneton, Gisborne can’t slip out of the top four due to final round matches between teams in the top five. Lancefield, Kyneton Golf and Kyneton all had wins on Saturday. Lancefield claimed all 18 points in its 102 (18)-70 (0) win against Trentham. Jeffrey Holmes’ rink was the big winner for Lancefield, winning 31-17. Lancefield sits third, equal on points with second-placed Bacchus Marsh. Kyneton Golf was the big winner of the day, smashing Gisborne Yellow, 121 (18)-73 (0). All Golf rinks won by at least six shots. Kyneton kept the pressure on the top four sides with a 109 (16)-69 (2) win against Romsey. Craig Vincent’s rink had a day out winning by 19 shots. The result leaves Kyneton on 147 points, six points behind fourth-placed Kyneton Golf. They were four points behind entering Saturday’s match. The battle to avoid relegation will also go down to the wire, with Gisborne Yellow and Trentham looking to avoid bottom spot. Gisborne Yellow sits eight points ahead of bottom-placed Trentham. Woodend, Bacchus Marsh, Macedon Ranges and Kyneton Blue were the winners in division 2, while Gisborne, Kyneton, Macedon Ranges, Woodend and Bacchus Marsh won in division 3. Tara Murray
