Bring Sarah home By Jessica Micallef Sunbury resident Sarah Bradbury’s “ultimate wish” is to get home to her family. Ms Bradbury, 42, was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, a rare aggressive brain cancer, in December 2018. Her sister Rebecca Dremel said Ms Bradbury was experiencing “numbness and pins and needles in her right arm” months prior to her diagnosis. “Sarah was admitted to hospital on November 8, 2018 after collapsing at home and losing the function of the right hand side of her body,” Ms Dremel said. “She was referred for an MRI and told there
were some tiny lesions on her brain and that they indicated she may have had a multiple sclerosis (MS) episode.” Ms Bradbury was admitted to Royal Melbourne Hospital, but she still had no diagnosis. “Neurologists played tug of war over Sarah’s diagnosis … half convinced it was MS and the other half convinced it was brain cancer,” she said. After nearly six weeks in hospital, Ms Dremel said her family received “the worse possible news”. “It was confirmed Sarah did in fact have a rare aggressive brain cancer … glioblastoma multiforme stage four,” she said. “We were told she only had a matter of months to live and surgery wasn’t an option at this stage.” Ms Bradbury was transferred to Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and, against recommendations, completed radiation treatment and her first round of chemotherapy. “The radiographer advised Sarah not to do radiation as it would be very tiring and [was] not worth affecting the quality of time she had left,” Ms Dremel said. “She ended up deciding to shave her head, which as you can imagine was very emotional.” Ms Dremel said her sister had since been transferred to the palliative care ward at Royal
Melbourne after an MRI scan found a new “spot” on her brain. “This has not been an easy transition for Sarah and her ultimate wish is to get home to her family and be with her babies,” Ms Dremel said. In order for her to come home, Ms Dremel said her sister required a second full-time carer, in addition to husband Heath, which would cost as much as $6000 a week. “Her home also needs to be modified with a 14-metre ramp to give Sarah access into the house,” she said. Number plate theft on the rise By Jessica Micallef Number plate theft in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges is on the rise, according to new figures. Statistics from the Crime Statistics Agency show number plate thefts in Sunbury have increased to 131 in the 2017-18 reporting period, up from 90 recorded offences the previous year. concerned about number plate theft throughout Sunbury and the state. “It’s a common problem we have here … it’s just one of the things that people need to be vigilant about,” Sergeant Aiello said. “We have a program here at the police station where people can have number plates fixed on their vehicles with screws free of charge so their number plates can’t be removed… so if there is anything to make it difficult, it’s always good.
Family rallying to a good cause Ron and Tim Diprose will be driving towards a good cause. The Sunbury father and son team will this year be participating in Australia’s 10th Shitbox Rally to raise funds for the Cancer Council. Ron said the decision to participate in the rally was to support his wife’s sister who has battled three cancers. “Debbie’s sister had kidney cancer, she had that removed in Hobart, then she had some complications so she had to be flown to Melbourne … and then a year later she got the same cancer in the liver, which has been treated,” he said. “And then pretty much a year later she found out she had breast cancer, she had a mastectomy maybe four months ago and she’s doing really well … [She] has a fabulous attitude. “That was one of the main drivers to why we’re doing this.” Ron and Tim will be driving from Melbourne to Townsville in October in a 1995 Ford Mondeo wagon they bought for $350 off Gumtree. “We’re going to dress the car up like the family truckster in the first Griswold’s movie, that’s why it’s got the luggage on the top … it’ll be painted green,” Ron said. “There’s a bit of a family laugh about trucksters because my brother-in-law had a car they called the truckster years ago which was a Ford Falcon. Tim said: “As a kid, dad always made us watch National Lampoons every year … so it’s fitting to be the truckster, we’ll see if we can get it airborne like the movie.” Participants need to raise a minimum of $5000 to take part in the drive, but Ron and Tim have decided to set the bar higher. “We put a figure of $11,377 because that number popped in my head,” Ron said. “I’ve got no idea why, but I thought, ‘Let’s shoot high’, so we’ll be doing as much fundraising as we can do. “We’re just under $1000 at the moment, so we’re getting there.” Tim and Ron said they were excited to be supporting a cause that affects many people.

The Rocket Man is coming to Hanging Rock. Sir Elton John will bring his global Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour Down Under to the Rock on Saturday, January 25, next year. Sir Elton will spend 15 days touring the nation before he turns off the microphone to spend time with his family. Macedon Ranges mayor Janet Pearce said the event would draw thousands of concert-goers. “Not only are we excited to welcome such a legendary performer as Sir Elton John to the shire, we are looking forward to the economic benefits such a concert will bring,” Cr Pearce said. “Previous concerts had a significant economic impact on the region, especially for accommodation providers and local restaurants, shops and cafes. “This tour will be the final opportunity for music fans to see Sir Elton John live in concert, and the only chance to see him with the majestic Hanging Rock as a concert backdrop.” Sir Elton will follow the likes of Leonard Cohen, Rod Stewart, Bruce Springsteen, Cold Chisel, the Eagles and Midnight Oil in performing at Hanging Rock. Driver ‘lucky to be alive’ By Jessica Micallef Police are urging motorists to remain vigilant following a crash in Darraweit Guim earlier this month. The female driver, aged in her 50s, was driving on Bolinda-Darraweit Road on February 2 about 8am when she fell asleep at the wheel. She drifted on to the wrong side of the road and collided with a hardwood fence. The vehicle ran along the fence line for about 30 metres before three fence railings entered the vehicle, narrowly missing the driver’s head. The driver was taken to Northern Hospital in Epping by ambulance. She suffered a sore shoulder and a minor cut to her neck. No one else was injured. Kyneton First Constable Steve Davies said the driver “was possibly the luckiest driver in Australia”. “She missed not one but two wooden fence posts,” Constable Davies said. “Both posts were at head height and both were only 1-2 millimetres from impaling her. “The force of the accident was so extreme it pushed the fence posts through the window, out the rear sheet-metal of the utility. “The driver was extremely lucky there were no passengers as they would have been impaled.” Constable Davies urged drivers to take great care. “Pull over and take adequate power naps when driving to ensure your safe arrival,” he said. “Police will be charging drivers who endanger themselves or other drivers when they have an accident due to fatigue or carelessness.” The driver will be charged with careless driving.

Lancefield kids crossing win St Mary’s Primary School pupils are walking to their classrooms safely and in style, with a new school crossing completed in time for term one. The project included a new crossing, kerb channelling, drainage, safety signage and fresh line markings near the intersection of Raglan Street in Lancefield. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas visited the school last month to celebrate the completion of the Chauncey Street crossing. “Parents, students and teachers will all be delighted that their new school crossing has been completed in time for term one,” she said. “We heard what Lancefield families had to say, which is why we’ve made the walk to school safer and easier for our littlest residents and their families.” The $70,000 school crossing was part of the state government’s $5 million school road safety package delivered by Regional Roads Victoria. The state government worked with the school, Macedon Ranges council and Regional Roads Victoria to ensure the school crossing was in the best location. Ms Thomas reminded motorists to stick to the required speed limits around schools. “We’ve all got to do our bit to keep our kids safe, so slow down, pay attention and take extra care during drop-off and pick-up times,” she said. Sculptor in Japan win A Kyneton sculptor will showcase her work at an international level. Larissa Gray was named as the successful applicant for an art exchange with Macedon Ranges’ sister city, Tokai in Japan. Ms Gray will send three bronzed sculptures to Japan in April. “I’m in the process of creating them now,” she said. “It needs to meet the brief which embodies the Macedon Ranges and the lifestyle and culture. “When I thought about the brief, I wasn’t sure how to incorporate the whole of Macedon Ranges in to one piece, so it made me think about doing a collection.”

MY PLACE On Australia Day, Robert Renton was named Macedon Ranges Citizen of the Year for his work as a pension and welfare officer. The Kyneton resident chats with Jessica Micallef about his involvement with the Kyneton RSL. How long have you lived in the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges? I have lived in Kyneton for 35 years. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about seeing veterans and widows and their dependants get the proper entitlements from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for their war-caused disabilities, and giving widows their income pensions when their spouse dies. Tell me about your involvement with the Kyneton RSL. I assist in claims for funeral allowance and conducting RSL funeral rituals, I conduct Anzac services, Remembrance Day services for Kyneton, Malmsbury,and Taradale, and also Australia Day barbecue and flag-raising ceremonies. How did it feel to know you had won the Macedon Ranges Citizen of the Year? It was hard to believe the award as I do not seek accolades, but I am extremely humbled to receive it and am hopefully worthy of the nomination.

All-ages relay full of life Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to support cancer survivors and victims by continuing the Relay for Life tradition. Lancefield and Macedon Ranges Relay For Life joint chair Ken Wiltshire said the community event had been running for 17 years. “It started with a group of local women in Lancefield who wanted to do something about breast cancer,” he said. “It’s an event driven by strong local women and that’s a good theme to run with.” The event has raised $1.45 million for the Cancer Council to assist with cancer research, prevention programs and support services. Mr Wiltshire said the local event was for “young and old”.
“We have a community singalong, tug of wars, children’s games, novelty acts, onesie laps and, on occasion, we have people who run rather than walk,” he said. “We mobilise a lot of people to get them to think about cancer and … to see that they are supported and that it’s important to think they are not alone. “It’s often the support after your treatment that is as important as the treatment itself. “It’s to find yourself getting back to a fully active life.” The relay will be held on March 2 and 3 at Lancefield Recreation Reserve. SPORT Coach thrilled as Dragons rise to the occasion Gisborne has grabbed a vital win in the fight for a top two spot in Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. In a battle between second and third, the Dragons came out on top against Romsey with both the bat and ball. After his side made 7-204 on day one, Dragons coach Glenn Waites knew good bowling would be required to get the win. “If you were to say that we made 200-odd at Romsey on a pretty flat and quick ground, I would say that we had under achieved,” he said. “We had the runs on the board, though, and it was going to be a really good test after coming off a failure against Woodend in a similar scenario.” After discussing the challenge they faced, the
bowlers stuck to their task to bowl Romsey out for 132. It was one of the Redbacks’ worst performances with the bat for the season. Waites was thrilled with how the side lifted for the challenge. “Jacko [Jakson Knight] steered beautifully with his great bowling changes,” he said. “The opening spell by Recordo [Gordon] and Jay [King] set the scene. Kingy bowled beautifully without much luck. First-gamer Joshua McDonald bowled a wicket maiden in his first over, while Joel Garbutt strangled the game.” Stand-in skipper Knight was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-29. Gordon finished with 3-28. While praising the bowlers, Waites was
quick also to laud the work of Jason McDonald and Lachlan Shore with the bat on day one. Jason McDonald came into the top side due to an injury to Jason Wilson to provide some more experience. With plenty of time still to bat, the Dragons made 2-108 in their second innings. Recordo Gordon made 72. Waites said the most pleasing thing about the second innings was the eagerness of players to get a second hit. “We had players queuing up to get time in the middle,” he said. The win opens up a gap of nearly 10 points between Gisborne and Romsey. The Dragons trail ladder leader Bacchus
Marsh by just over five points. Waites said the result and every result in the run home was important. The Dragons should receive a boost next round, with Wilson set to return alongside Brook Grumont. Captain Jarryd Vernon is likely to remain on the injury list. Waites said they didn’t know if Vernon would return this season. “He’s a big loss – he’s a quality player,” he said. In other results, Bacchus Marsh beat Sunbury, Diggers Rest Bulla had a big win against Wallan while Sunbury United didn’t get near Woodend’s total. Tara Murray

The top three teams, St Anthonys, Rupertswood and Riddell, which all got wins at the weekend, seem set for finals appearances. With Bacchus Marsh and Ashfield having losses, it keeps the door open for Gisborne and East Sunbury, if everything was to go their way.

Big return for Socceroo By Tara Murray Socceroos star Jamie Maclaren may have spent the past 10 years playing soccer interstate and overseas, but Sunbury is still home. Maclaren, who grew up in Sunbury, has signed with Melbourne City so will be playing in front of friends and family on a regular basis. “It’s nice to wake up every day and know I can see my family face to face, not relying on a phone call,” Maclaren said. “My parents still live in Sunbury, still live in Emu Bottom – a place where I started learning my techniques and basics of the game through my father. It’s nice to drive into Sunbury … it’s a town I’m proud of. “I chose the number 29 at Melbourne City as the post code is 3429 and the 29th is my birthday as well. Sunbury is a special place for me.” Long before becoming one of Australia’s top strikers, Maclaren started his career with Sunbury United and then played with Green Gully. He retains a fondness for both clubs. “I always go back if I have spare time to go see the guys,” said Maclaren of United.
“I’ve been able to give back to the club. Green Gully has got a few financial rewards as well. It’s nice to give back to the clubs that don’t have the financial backing.” Since his time at Green Gully, Maclaren went to Blackburn Rovers, before playing with A-League clubs Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar. More recently, he joined German club SV Darmstadt 98, which loaned him to Scottish club Hibernian. Maclaren said he enjoyed his time overseas, including playing in his dad’s hometown, Edinburgh. “To play in front of people he went to school with and to wake up every day and have myself in the back page, having scored against Celtic, scored against Rangers … they’re two of the biggest clubs in the UK,” he said. “It’s a proud moment for my dad.” “I spent close to seven years outside of Australia playing football away from family, which isn’t easy.” Maclaren said moving home to Melbourne was an easy decision. He said that ever since he left home at 15 to pursue his dreams, he had wanted to play professionally in his hometown.

“Melbourne City is only getting bigger … it’s a great opportunity,” he said. “The A-League is growing every year. “For me to be able to do that in Melbourne and play in front of the home crowd, my friends and family, that’s important for me. “City is a club that has ambition and that matches mine. I want to win silverware. “I signed for three and half years, I see this as a long-term project. I want to be part of something.” The move to Melbourne City is part of what is already a big year for Maclaren. He scored his first goal for Australia and started throughout the Socceroos’ Asian Cup campaign. Maclaren, who has now played 13 matches for Australia, said pulling on a Socceroos jersey was a dream come true. “It’s always been the ambition to play for Australia and I’ve done that on 13 occasions now and I want to build on that,” he said. “I remember being a young kid in my back yard, wanting to score and play for Australia. “I’ve worked so hard to get there … probably the hardest part is staying there.”
Romsey has its sights on going one better in the Riddell District Netball League. Having surprised most by making last season’s grand final, the Redbacks have strengthened their side for this season. Big win puts Sunbury on top By Tara Murray Sunbury has moved to the top of the Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 ladder with its best win of the season. In a battle between the top two teams, it was Sunbury that came out on top and in the process overtook opponent Moonee Valley on the ladder. In a match where Sunbury could have quite easily come away with the full 18 points, it had to settle for three rink wins. The final result was 87 (16)-62 (2). The day didn’t get off to the best start for Sunbury, with Australian star Carla Krizanic a late withdrawal through illness. It meant a reshuffle of the teams on the morning of the game. Danny Fortune stepped up and skipped Krizanic’s normal rink, which lost by two shots, 19-17. Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was pleasing that they had players who could step up when they needed to. “To get someone in like Danny and still play well and only lose by two shots is really pleasing,” he said. In the other rinks, Lee Wesley’s won 21-14, Todd Trewarne’s won 22-18 and Mark Cowan’s won 27-11. Cowan’s rink picked up 10 shots in two rinks late to blow out the margin. Glennon said it was unusual for a team to pick up five shots in one end, let alone do it in two rinks straight. Glennon said Wayne Long, who was in Mark Cowan’s rinks, was the standout. He said Steve Franke, who stepped up from the second side, also played really well. The win moves Sunbury to 219 points, one ahead of Moonee Valley on 218. Both sides are guaranteed to finish top two.

Glennon said it was pleasing to show the side could match it with the team that has been the benchmark all season. Sunbury has another test this week, when it faces third-placed Glenroy. It was a good day all round for Sunbury with four of its six sides having wins. The second side has also assured a top two finish, while its third side remains in the mix for finals. Division, Gisborne Red’s good form continued in division 1. Facing fellow top four hopeful Kyneton, Red put on a show, winning 123 (18)-72 (0). Red moved to the top of the ladder following that win, coupled with Bacchus Marsh’s loss to Kyneton Golf, 94 (14)-89 (4). Red now sits 15 points clear of Bacchus Marsh. Golf’s win moves it into the top four at the expense of crosstown rival Kyneton.
Third-placed Lancefield defeated Romsey, 105 (16)-68 (2), while Trentham got its first win of the season, defeating Gisborne Yellow 117 (16)-89 (2). Just 15 points separates second to fifth with two rounds remaining. Bacchus Marsh, Kyneton Red, Macedon Ranges and Kyneton Golf were the winners in division 2, while Bacchus Marsh, Woodend, Lancefield, Romsey and Gisborne had wins in division 3.
