Honours for our finest Woodend’s Shaylyn Blyth and Kyneton’s Jessica Cockerill-Wright have both received Macedon Ranges Young Citizen of the Year awards. And on Saturday, Robert Renton was named Citizen of the Year for his work as a pension and welfare officer at Kyneton RSL. Ms Blyth, 17, was a proud recipient of the honour at the Macedon Ranges council’s 2019 Australia Day awards celebration at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute on Saturday. She told Star Weekly she was overjoyed to have received the award. “It’s kind of insane to me because I used to just be this little girl in the background, helping
out and not really taking credit,” she said. “To actually be recognised on such a high level … it just blows my mind.” Ms Blyth has worked with Cobaw Community Health’s House of Awesome projects to improve the mental health of the LGBTQ+ community. She has also created a healthcare video to encourage local GPs to be more inclusive and has been involved with her Pride Crew, a group she co-founded at Gisborne Secondary College. “There was nothing in the school for LGBT students and we started it up with the help of Cobaw and it’s been booming ever since,” Ms Blyth said. “It’s mostly to support members of the group but also just for anyone to show

acceptance and inclusivity.” Ms Blyth said she hoped her award would encourage young people to get out in to the community. “I don’t think my life would be the same if I didn’t help others and I hope that there’s some little kid out there who’s wanting to make a change,” she said. “I don’t do this stuff to get recognition – I do it because it makes me happy.” Ms Cockerill-Wright, 23, was the first woman at the Kyneton CFA to be elected to the position of lieutenant in its 134-year history. She has been with the CFA for 10 years. “When I was younger, there was a bushfire at the back of our old house and I remember

seeing truck after truck go past,” she said. “I just thought, ‘That looks cool’ … I wanted to join.” She said community safety was a big part of being involved with the CFA and that she regularly visited schools to promote the message. “If you can start teaching kids young about fire safety, then I think it progresses up through there,” she said. Doctor Jacqueline Ogeil received the Arts Ambassador award, Jason Azzopardi took out the Community Achievement award and the Malmsbury Town Hall 150th birthday celebration received the Community Event award.

Firefighter assists with special roadside delivery Gisborne CFA firefighter Luke Hammond’s journey to work on Wednesday morning was no ordinary drive. Mr Hammond said he was heading to work when he “saw a car pulled over the side of the road”. The trained firefighter is used to stressful situations but said a baby’s birth was the last thing he was expecting. “I was on my way in to work about 7.30am and I was heading on Dalrymple Road, heading on to the freeway,” Mr Hammond said. “I could
see a person who was bent over … with another person who appeared to be helping. So I slowed down just to check. “I could hear screaming … I pulled over and approached the people and said: ‘I’m a firefighter, can I help?’ ” Mr Hammond spoke with paramedics via phone while baby Hope was brought in to the world with the help of her nan. “The baby came quite quickly – the little girl’s head was already out when I got there,” he said. “The rest of it happened really quickly … I
assisted the baby with breathing.” Mr Hammond praised the efforts of Hope’s mother and nan before he arrived at the scene. “They were doing really well,” Mr Hammond said. “They were understandably a bit stressed, but they had it under control. “They were doing what they needed to do. They stopped instead of rushing to the hospital.” Mr Hammond said his only concern was the wellbeing of Hope and her mother. “I felt good to help and it felt even better to

she said. “All I would like to do is encourage people to get out because you do meet some very nice people. “[I] made some good friends over the years, and whilst you move on to other organisations, the friendships still last.”
Kyneton’s Treehouse program will soon offer longer operating hours. The Treehouse provides a supportive and safe setting for people with a palliative condition, dementia or any chronic illness that contributes to them feeling isolated or lonely. The program will open four days a week, Monday to Thursday, up from two, after receiving a $20,000 grant from Carer Support Services in Bendigo. Treehouse co-ordinator Kathy Kirby said the program was a great way for patients to indulge in what they enjoy. “We do what the clients are interested in … we go with the flow,” Ms Kirby said. Since the program started in 2017, the Treehouse has experienced a steady increase in demand for its services, which are provided at Kyneton District Health hospital. Ms Kirby applied for the grant in November to help meet demand for ongoing referrals and inquiries about the program. “We’re thrilled and very grateful that Carer Support Services approved our funding application,” she said. “The Treehouse is now able to support more clients and their families in the Macedon Ranges, meaning better outcomes for everyone involved. And there is no wait list … the staff are really happy to expand.” Ms Kirby will have an “office day” with the new hours and can spend one day a week in a case management role, helping carers access and navigate systems related to patient care. By Jessica Micallef Sunbury resident Mary Wicks has been made an officer of the Order of Australia for her community service. Ms Wicks, 84, told Star Weekly she did not expect to be recognised at a high level for her work. “I got a real pleasant surprise … I thought, ‘Oh goodness gracious me’,” Ms Wicks said. “I’m very grateful to the people who thought I was worthy of it.” Ms Wicks said she had been a member of the Australian Red Cross since 1997. “I always had a regard for the Red Cross and we did have a branch here in Sunbury and I was associated with that,” Ms Wicks said. “Then that closed down and I joined Darraweit Guim, their branch there … I was chairman there for three years. “I firmly believe in what the Red Cross represents. “Every time you have a look at the news, they’re often in war-torn areas and they do an enormous amount of work. They’re there whenever needed.” Ms Wicks also volunteered with Sunbury Community Health. “I worked there as a volunteer after I finished work,” she said. “I looked around into various organisations and thought, ‘Where can I be the most useful’. “So I went there and I worked as a volunteer with the community health nurse.” The Sunbury resident is a member of the U3A Sunbury, an organisation for retired or semi-retired people aged above 50. She has been a steward at the Sunbury Agricultural Show for 20 years, was a member of the Country Women’s Association in Sunbury and has been involved with the Sunbury Widows Club since 2014. Ms Wicks said volunteering was a great way to “appreciate the needs of people”. “I think it helps you develop a feel for the people in the community,” she said. “If there’s a need, you put your mind to it and do something about it.

Young Kyneton tennis hot shots got a taste of what it’s like to be on a grand slam tour at this year’s Australian Open. Some Kyneton & District Tennis Club members were invited to take part in a Hot Shots Day at the open on January 17 where they met ANZ tennis ambassador Alicia Molik. Each of the members is part of the Tennis Hot Shots Community Play program which aims to make tennis more accessible for children living in regional areas. Club head coach Marcus Wills said 30 children aged between 5 and 12 years attended the event. “The kids were absolutely excited,” Mr Wills said. “Half of them had been to the tennis and half hadn’t and the feedback from the parents

was really appreciative.” Mr Wills said there were “heaps of kids’ activities” that kept the children entertained. “Watching tennis at that age can be a bit dry,” Mr Wills said. “There was a ball park, the kids played on mini courts, there was a waterslide.” ANZ managing director Catriona Noble said she was excited to host the Kyneton club at one of Melbourne’s biggest sporting events. “We’re extremely proud to support regional clubs through the Community Play program and continue to grow the sport at a grassroots level,” Ms Noble said. “These clubs have shown great dedication to the sport.” Jessica Micallef

Macedon Ranges council is encouraging residents to participate in the annual community satisfaction survey if they are contacted by phone in February. Participants will be asked to rate the council’s overall performance and to provide feedback on community consultation, customer service, advocacy and key service areas. The survey results will be made available on the council’s website later this year.

Little piggies find home By Jessica Micallef The secret life of pigs is being revealed at Edgars Mission. The mission, a not-for-profit farm sanctuary in Lancefield that provides shelter and care for homeless, abused, injured or abandoned animals, recently took in seven abandoned pigs. Communications and education officer Paula Jewell said the family had been tagged “the secret seven”. “They are two mums and five babies,”

Ms Jewell said. “People are unaware of how pigs live, so it’s like [watching] their secret lives. “It’s also a secret on how clever and clean pigs really are … people think they’re this dirty animal. “The babies are quite cute … they like to have fun.” Ms Jewell said she was excited at the progress the “secret seven” had been making while in the care of Edgars Mission. “They were struggling to survive and were doing it tough,” Ms Jewell said. “The transition is incredible … after a week,
they are learning to trust us and are looking healthier and putting on weight.” Edgars Mission is currently home to 400 rescued animals. “We get pigs, cows, chickens, ducks, sheep, goat, turkeys, rabbits,” Ms Jewell said. “We have a few horses and ponies and alpacas. “Obviously, we would love to keep them all, but we need to get them to a life-long loving home.” Ms Jewell encouraged anyone interested in providing an animal with a new home to phone Edgars Mission on 0408 397 301.
Macedon Ranges residents are being encouraged to tackle the region’s unique climate change challenges. The state government is helping regional Victorians deal with climate change through a new community grants program. Under the $1 million Community Climate Change Adaption Grants Program, grants of up to $75,000 will be available for practical and locally-driven projects that help communities respond to climate change. Eligible projects must either be led by, or implemented in partnership with local councils, traditional owner corporations, community groups or not-for-profit organisations. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said she encouraged residents to apply for the grants to ensure protection against climate changes throughout the Ranges. “This region will face its own unique challenges when it comes to climate change,” Ms Thomas said. “This grants program is encouraging new and innovative ideas to build resilient communities. “This program is about supporting new relationships between communities, local governments and regional stakeholders to adapt and respond to the impacts of climate change.” Grant applications close on March 31. Dance stars shine Four junior dancers – and their teacher – have starred in a national competition. Ella, Annabelle, Alanna and Lexi, and their dance teacher, Amy Citroen, from Signature Cheer and Dance Studio in New Gisborne participated at the Follow Your Dreams Nationals. Ms Citroen, the studio owner, said the girls shone after earning their way to the national championships at the Pullman Hotel in Melbourne earlier this month. “The girls had to qualify at the regional competitions during 2018 and place first or second and receive 86 points.” Ms Citroen said the girls were over the moon at their results during the national competition. “They were very excited,” she said. “Alanna

What is yyour connection with Sunburyy and Macedon Ranges? I grew up and went to school in Gisborne and now do work in the area as a musician, guitar teacher and as the director of the Macedon Ranges Music Festival (MRMF).
What other hats do yyou wear in the community? I get to perform prettyy regularlyy across the Macedon Ranges in a bunch of different groups ffor various venues and events. I also teach guitar in a couple of local primaryy schools and the kids are a lot of ffun to work with.
How longg have yyou lived in the area? I lived in Gisborne until I was 20 and then moved to Melbourne a couple of years ago to be closer to university. y I’m very ffortunate to still spend a lot off time in the area and it still fee f ls like home.

Tell me about yyour invollvement as the T Macedon Ranges Music Festival director? I’ve been a part off the festiva f l since it began in 2013 and have been leading the festiva f l team since 2015. My role has changed considerably as we’ve grown; back then I did a lot of the work and dragged my mum, girlfriend and some close friends into doingg odd jobs but we now

I’ve been play a ingg music since primar y school and now do a lot off work as both a performer f and guitar teacher. Travelling through south-east Asia as a teenager drastically broadened myy world view and led me to develop a strongg passion for social justice and global health. Beingg someone who lives in such a lucky ky countr yy, I fee f l a certain responsibility to dedicate time to helpingg others who are less ffortunate. I get to combine these two passions in the workk I do ffor MRMF. have an amazingg core group of volunteers who all do incredible work to make the event come together. Tell me about the festival and how it came T about? The festival came about after myy family did a volunteer trip to a small school in rural Cambodia. I thinkk what we experienced on that
trip affected us all and we came back wanting to continue to support the Woodend-based Cambodian Kids Foundation (CKF). We decided that holdingg a mini music festiva f l would be ffun so dad built a makeshift ft stage in our Gisborne backyard and we asked some mates around to jam and throw some money in a jar. With the help of some friends, the festival was born and it has just grown organically
What is the best thing about the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges? Having now lived in Melbourne ffor a couple of years I have a greater appreciation for the sense of communityy that’s present in the Macedon Ranges. The area is also blessed to have some veryy peacefu f l and naturally beautifu f l places. If yyou could changee an anythingg about the area, what would it be? I’d love to see more support for young musicians. Getting your ffoot in the door as an inexperienced performer f in a regional area can be really lly tough. We’re ffortunate to have the Macedon Ranges Music Collective and Music in the Sticks program doing some great work.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir goes big on small servings In handful of months, Consider The Sauce will turn nine. I long ago realised that aspiring to cover everything that is happening – and being eaten – across the west is the stuff of nervous breakdown. So we go our merry way – and enjoy immensely, and participate in, the broader conversations. For instance, very few of the bars that have bloomed in the inner west in the past few years have received coverage here. And it’s for that reason that Slider Diner was not really on our radar. Just another burger joint, hey? But visit it we do when our Seddon eating destination of choice turns out to be closed. That’s a fine outcome, for we enjoy Slider Diner. Located in the premises formerly occupied by Ajitoya, the place is done out in bright retro diner style. And the slider angle? Well, that seems to be all about the availability of half-size burgers in a menu dedicated to classy fast food – with a few twists along the way. Usually, half portions cost significantly more than half the full price. So Slider Diner deserves much kudos for the fact its “sliders” cost precisely half of their full-portion equivalents – and they’re generous to boot! This means an individual customer can enjoy some diversity without paying a price in terms of quantity or money.
SLIDER DINER Address: 82 Charles Street, Seddon Bennie is well pleased with slider cheeseburger ($7) and kim cheezy ($7) with crunchy fried chicken, kim chi slaw, smoked cheddar and gochujang sauce (Korean red chilli sauce). My fish burger ($15, not available in half size) is damn fine. The deep-fried rockling fillet, juicy and flavoursome and meltingly tender, is accompanied by lemon dill mayo, lettuce and just the right quantity of finely sliced pickled onion. We are utterly incapable of ordering the likes of burgers or gyros without also summoning chips, but all we want is a taste, really. So we wish more places would offer said chips in appropriately sized – and priced – portions. Slider Diner does just that for $5.50 – though these are just OK. Will we return to Slider Diner? Yes – quite possibly to build a meal out of sides such as chicken wings, popcorn chicken, Tex-Mex corn cob, truffled mac ‘n’ cheese and pulled pork doughnuts. “A NEW YEAR BEGINS” I hope that you all had a happy and safe Christmas and now a New Year is upon us. I wonder how many of you have made New Year’s resolutions and how many of you have forgotten those New Year’s resolutions. As always, the start of a new year in Australia brings three things: Extreme heat; the start of the school year; and Australia Day. Australia Day seems to have become a political football, which is sad. As a school girl, many, many years ago, I remember waving the Union Jack with great pride on Australia Day, but there was no public holiday. Australia Day is the 26th January, perhaps it will change in the future but right now it is the 26th and that being the case, why is there to be a public holiday on the 28th? My great grand parents came to Australia, some for the gold rush, some for adventure, but no convicts that I am aware of. I love Australia and I was proud to be Australia, but now I am just sad. We do not need yet another public holiday to further cost industries more money. Instead we need to fix our ridiculous revolving doors of Prime Ministers and we must, right now, need to stop the destruction of our rivers. SPORT Sunbury youngster thrives on tennis learning curve Sunbury’s Jin Woodman has been mixing it with the best wheelchair tennis players in the world at the Melbourne Wheelchair Tennis Open. The nine-year-old was one of the youngest players to compete in the tournament, which was used by the world’s best players as a warm-up to the Australian Open. The tournament was Woodman’s second, having made his debut at the national titles last year. Woodman said it was exciting to have the opportunity to be around the best players in the world at his home court of Hume Tennis and Community Centre in Craigieburn. He had a tough first-up match in the boys’ section, losing to Japanese No.1 Takumi Ouchiyama. He then had the opportunity to play some consolidation games and doubles. Woodman was at least five or six years younger than most of his opposition. “It was good,” he said. “We had the Japanese players coming to Australia.”
The tournament came two and half years after Woodman took up the sport after seeing it at a come-and-try day. His father, Steve, said he had taken an instant liking to the sport and trained every Saturday. He said playing in the Melbourne Wheelchair Tennis Open instead of attending as a spectator had been really exciting for his son. “We went to a disability sport rec event and they showed us about tennis,” Steve said. “He then started at Hume, which is really handy and they’re a good bunch of people. “There’s six or seven players in wheelchairs. He’s the youngest, but they’re really good socially.” Woodman’s experience at the Melbourne Wheelchair Tennis Open follows his appearance in the national championships last year, in which he played the number one junior Australian player. Overall, he finished runners-up in the junior consol singles final.
Woodman also spent time in Canberra at a national camp run by Tennis Australia. Steve said both tournaments and the camp had been a big learning curve for his son. Woodman, who uses a wheelchair because of a genetic condition that affects his nerves, said his aim was to compete at the Australian Open and Olympics. “My favourites are Dylan [Alcott] and Heath [Davidson],” he said . “I took photos with them and made it my wallpaper.” It was through Alcott’s charity that Woodman received his tennis chair. Woodman said that he enjoyed the differences between singles and doubles, but singles was his favourite. Tara Murray

Tigers close on flag shot By Tara Murray Bendigo Braves are all that stand between Kyneton Tigers and a Country Basketball League women’s north-east grand final spot. The Tigers had a solid win in the quarter-finals against Myrtleford Saints on Saturday night to win through to the semi-finals – the same stage they made last year. Playing on the road, the Tigers were dealt a blow before the match, with Rebecca Van Kuyk ruled out to give her injured knee another week’s rest. Despite that, the Tigers were able to hold off the Saints. They led for much of the game, but the margin never got beyond 10 points. With just under five minutes to go, the Tigers led by one point. They held strong in the dying minutes to win 66-59. Coach Chris Tighe was thrilled. “It was a pretty good win,” he said. “It was a good win for the girls and they executed everything really well.” Tighe was full of praise for the Saints, who never gave up. Tigers veteran Michelle Fletcher led from the front, top-scoring with 20 points. “Fletch played awesome again,” Tighe said. “She’s the heart and soul of the team and puts in 100 per cent and that flows through the team.” Jessica Mangan scored 15 points and Molly Greetham scored 10 to help cover the absence of Van Kuyk. Tighe was delighted with 14-year-old Adrienne Cameron, who scored 11 points. “She handled the ball really well and shot the lights out,” he said. “She’s a junior [Sunbury] Jets player and was outstanding.” The win set up a semi-final clash with the Bendigo Braves, who have lost just one match for the year. The teams played twice during the season, with the Braves winning by three and 16 points respectively. Tighe said beating the Braves had been one of their aims this season. “We’ve wanted to beat Bendigo all season and we get one more shot at it,” he said. “The first game was one of the most fun games I’ve coached this season. “The second game we were up by 20 points and stopped playing. “If we can put in a strong 40 minutes, I think we will be OK. “We’ve got 40 minutes ahead of us … hopefully we can get the win and then there’s another 40 minutes.”

The Gisborne and District Cricket Association finished fourth in the Bendigo Country Week division 1 competition last week. GDCA started with a win against Emu Valley Cricket Association before losing to Wangaratta and District Cricket Association, Goulburn Murray Cricket and Castlemaine and District Cricket Association. GDCA skipper Kieran Atkin was the best with the bat for his side, averaging 42.50, while Woodend’s Monte McCague was the best of the bowlers with six wickets. Goulburn Murray Cricket won the competition.

Central Highlands under-16 boys team fell just short of winning the Youth Premier League Dowling Shield. Playing against other sides from across the state, the Highlanders made it through to the final against South East Bayside. Batting first, the Highlanders made 7-183 from their overs. The Breakers top order got the job done, finishing 1-184. Four GDCA players, Daniel Lalor, Ruben Robe, Joshua McDonald and Mace Cousins, were part of the Highlanders team. Lalor captained the side.

Rupertswood has further cemented its spot in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts top two by beating Bacchus Marsh. Before the match, they were sitting second and third respectively. Rupertswood made 6-258 in reply to the Bulls’ 9-238. Riddell moved ahead of the Bulls with its win against Gisborne. The Bombers had no trouble making 8-169 in reply to Gisborne’s 75. Ladder leader St Anthonys defeated Ashfield by 40 runs, while East Sunbury got its third win of the season, defeating Eynesbury Eagles by 14 runs. There was no play in the Jensen Shield because of the Australia Day long weekend.

United bats its way to victory By Tara Murray Sunbury United triumphed in the local derby against Sunbury in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. In a must-win match for both sides, Sunbury United came back from a tough start with the bat to win the points. Chasing Sunbury’s 165, United needed all of its batting depth to get the job done. United finished 8-248, after being 6-74. United coach Archie Dudderidge said they had confidence in their batsmen. “We could turn our batting order upside down and I don’t think it would make much difference as everyone can bat,” he said. “We just aimed to have wickets in hand at 5pm, being a hot day we thought that the runs would open up, which they did.” Adam Billinghurst top-scored with 58, while Shaun Brown worked hard to get United in sight of the target, making 43. Dudderidge said he was impressed by 14-year-old Brody Watts, who made 29 coming in at number 10. “It was his second game for us, having played in the T20 and he took three wickets. “He started the season in the thirds and bowled well and took wickets and it was the same in the seconds. “He bowled well again [on Saturday] but we dropped a couple of catches off him.” Jason McGann was the pick of the bowlers for the Roar, taking 5-73.
Dudderidge said they wanted to continue to bring through young players such as Watts. The win keeps United in the running for a top-four spot. They sit just under 13 points behind fourth-placed Woodend. The two sides meet each other over the next two weekends and Dudderidge said it would be a good test for them. “They beat [second-placed] Gisborne on the weekend, which we didn’t want. “It’s a must-win game for us and we need to beat them to have a shot at the top four.” Woodend’s win against Gisborne was the side’s fifth in a row. Chasing 221, Woodend finished 8-222. Skipper Warren Else top-scored with 74, while Brett Warner finished 60 not out. Jakson Knight took three wickets for the Dragons. The Dragons had to play without skipper Jarryd Vernon, who needed hand surgery during the week after an incident at work. Bacchus Marsh increased its lead at the top of the table, with a victory against Diggers Rest Bulla. After making 7-252, the Bulls bowled the Burras out for 100 in 38 overs. Only two players reached 20 for the Burras, and Madushanka Ekanayaka took six wickets for the Bulls. Meanwhile, Romsey and Wallan had the weekend free as they finished their game on last Sunday.
