Top trip for rescue crew By Jessica Micallef Four Sunbury SES volunteers are preparing for a training adventure in the US they hope will make them the “best rescuers” they can be. Andrew Patience, Jarrod Bell, Matt Simmons and Ben Stanford will travel more than 14,000 kilometres to undergo training rarely made available to Australian rescue operators. Mr Bell said it was a great opportunity to hone their skills and learn new techniques. “The key course, the North American Heavy Rescue Symposium, is being held in Georgia … a whole bunch of different courses really
focusing on the heavy rescue space. So buses, trucks, building collapse and bridge collapse, road collapse,” Mr Bell said. “We’re also going to an alternative fuels course, in a city called Spring just outside Houston … things like electric vehicles. “It’s a really exciting opportunity to go over there and kind of see and learn how American rescue operates, especially in the heavy space. “One of the best ways you can learn from other people is by visiting them … we’ve got some irons in the fire with the San Francisco Fire Department and the New York Fire Department.”
Mr Bell said the cost to send them all overseas could be as much as $26,000. “When we first started talking about this, we made it awfully clear that we didn’t want this to look like a junket,” Mr Bell said. “However, in talking to a lot of people, people have said they’ve wanted to help us out and that’s really awesome. “Ben did set up a GoFundMe campaign. But I’m not even looking at that … I’m still going with the intention of funding myself completely.” The men will spend nearly three weeks in training, but will also pay their respects at Ground Zero in New York to lives lost on 9/11.
“As emergency services volunteers we saw what happened on September 11,” Mr Bell said. “It’s a bit of a pilgrimage for us to be able to go there.” He said he hoped the training would enhance his skills as a rescuer. “For me, it’s about being the best rescuer I can be,” he said. “It allows us to bring in new ideas … what is the next best practice, what is the next thing that we can do that maybe shaves three of four minutes off the technique.” To donate: gofundme.com/volunteers-learnrescue-in-us

Canteen cash a big score By Jessica Micallef The Kyneton Football Netball Club will soon be cooking on a whole new level. The club has received a grant of more than $13,000 to revamp its canteen at Kyneton Showgrounds as part of the federal government’s Stronger Communities Programme. The money will enable upgrades of cabinetry, sink and tapware, installation of waterproofed flooring and purchase of a deep fryer. Club president Karen O’Sullivan said the grant was a great way to kick-start the year.

“A new canteen will put smiles on the faces of many volunteers and canteen co-ordinators,” she said. “An upgraded kitchen will be a much welcome addition to the Kyneton Football Netball Club social clubrooms, one that can be used widely by other community groups as well as help us to maximise our fundraising.”
Ms O’Sullivan said the canteen was due for an upgrade. “The oven is not in use, there are powerpoint leads everywhere … it’s not user friendly,” she said. Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters said the club was a worthy recipient of the grant. “The refurbishment will not only benefit Kyneton Football Netball Club in terms of revenue and service to members and the public, but will also be a considerable benefit to all Kyneton Showground users, their members, and the general public supporting their events,”
Ms Chesters said. “Kyneton Football Netball Club does a great job in creating a sense of belonging and social inclusion, and building a stronger local community. “I commend the hard work of the Kyneton Football Netball Club on their excellent and innovative application.” The club is one of 12 central Victorian organisations that received a combined total of $150,000. Refurbishment on the canteen will begin in a few weeks and is expected to be completed by April 13.

Macedon Ranges residents are being encouraged to put a run in their step. The Macedon Ranges Running Club will be hosting a 13-week Start to Run journey to encourage people to get into shape. Club secretary Lindsay Sharpe said the program suits all fitness levels. “You walk and run at your own pace … it’s not a competition,” Mr Sharpe said. “In the first eight weeks, you can run zero to
Residents around Benloch in the Macedon Ranges were told to shelter indoors during a bushfire last Tuesday. An emergency warning was issued about the blaze just after 2pm last Tuesday, urging residents to shelter indoors as homes and lives were at threat. The fire was burning near Kitchenhams Road in Benloch and travelling in an easterly direction. The alert was downgraded to a watch and act several hours later. Authorities said the fire was under control just before 5pm. Water-bombing aircraft, 45 fire trucks and almost 200 firefighters battled the blaze. Crews remained at the scene overnight while the fire continued to burn within the perimeter. CFA incident controller John Pearce said the fire had started on a property and had spread quickly. “It was noticed by a property owner who phoned it through,” Mr Pearce said. “It was windy at the time when it started, and it is extremely dry. “Fencing had been lost, but no structures were affected.” Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Michael Efron said it was 40 degrees at the Kilmore Gap weather station at 2.30pm on the day of the fire, with moderate westerly and north-westerly winds. There was a total fire ban across the state last Tuesday.

Fostering family ties By Jessica Micallef Sunbury residents Erin and Chris Collard have a happy family – so they’re all set to spread the love. They last year decided to become foster carers. Ms Collard said the choice to foster a child came easily. “We had been thinking about becoming foster carers for many years,” she said. She said a billboard she saw one night while driving home, advertising an information session, was the final nudge they needed. “I came home and said to Chris, ‘Our girls are
happy, they’ve got a really good life and we’ve got room for an extra person in the house’ – so we inquired and went from there,” she said. They were officially approved as foster carers in November after going through rigourous training with MacKillop Family Services. “The accreditation process was really interesting and in-depth,” Ms Collard said. “There are initial interviews, then you do full days of training. “You go through all the different modules about foster care and then they come to your home … Then it’s all put into a massive report and that’s presented to a panel.
“We’re accredited for emergency respite, short and long-term care, so it can be anywhere from overnight to two years – it just depends on the needs of the child.” Ms Collard said foster care offered several options. “You don’t have to have a full-time commitment,” she said. “You can be single or you can be married, you can be de facto, you can be in a same-sex relationship. “If you are thinking of becoming a foster carer, we urge you to give an agency like MacKillop Family Services a call. Nineteen Macedon Ranges residents will take the oath to become Australian citizens during Australia Day celebrations on Saturday. This year marks 70 years since Australian citizenship was introduced into law. Residents taking the oath this year include those from the UK, Netherlands, New Zealand, Germany and Switzerland. Macedon Ranges will hold an Australia Day awards and citizenship ceremony at 10.30am at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute. Mayor Janet Pearce will host the event with special guest and Australia Day shire ambassador Stefan Romaniw. Awards for the Macedon Ranges Citizen, Young Citizen, Community Achievement, Community Event and Art Ambassador of the year will also be presented. Festivities will include a flag parade and barbecue in Woodend, a free breakfast in Kyneton and free entry to Lancefield and Woodend outdoor pools. Gisborne Australia Day festivities, at the John Aitken Reserve, will include a Welcome to Country ceremony, flag pageant and raising ceremony, live music, games, trivia and brunch served by CFA members. Ms Moore said the market would be a great way to encourage recycling of unwanted baby, kids and maternity items and for baby and children businesses to showcase their goods and services. “One’s man trash is another man’s treasure,” Ms Moore said. “It’s a good way to promote businesses.”
Ms Moore said the items on sale would cater for newborn babies right through to 10 year olds. Items ranging from baby clothes and toys to furniture will be for sale. Ms Moore said free activities on the day would include a jumping castle, face-painting and cookie decorating. A free goodie bag with discount vouchers and sample products will be handed out to the first 100 visitors. MY PLACE What is your connection with Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges? I was the shire engineer at Woodend for 10 years from 1976 and then commenced an engineering consultancy business in Gisborne for another 20 years. My wife and I raised our family in Woodend and have been involved in schools and churches in the area. How long have you lived in the area? We have lived in the area for 42 years. During that time we had a 40 acre hobby farm in Woodend then recently downsized in a move to New Gisborne. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about making good use of the earth’s resources and its sustainability. I am particularly concerned about farming practices that deplete the soil of nutrients and making efficient use of water. Tell me about your involvement in the New Gisborne Community Garden. With the aid of friends, we initiated the community garden and co-ordinated further development and food production. We are fortunate to have a dedicated like-minded team where we share the workload, and plans for progress. During each of the four years we have been in operation there has been a growth in the area of the garden and community involvement. Our next challenge will be to use the fruit from the trees. What does the garden offer to locals and visitors? The aim of the garden is to share the produce
as an encouragement to people who are in need and to enjoy the friendship of other gardeners. Through the kitchen, meals are produced that are distributed to PS My Family Matters and the Chaplain of the Gisborne Secondary College. The surplus goes to Careworks in Sunbury.

What other hats do you wear in the community? I am the joint area co-ordinator of the Victorian Council of Churches Emergency Ministries for the Macedon Ranges Shire. VCCEM offers personal support to people in need during times of crisis. With my wife, we assist refugee families in the Broadmeadows area with their assimilation into the Australian culture. What would people be surprised to know about you? Early in my career, I spent over two years in Arnhem Land in the role of district engineer for the Methodist Overseas Missions. This involved living in the communities and learning to speak a dialect of an East Arnhem tribal group. What is the best thing about the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges area? The beautiful scenery, the friendly people and the village atmosphere of the towns. I enjoy walking my dog and greeting passers-by. If you could change one thing about the area, what would it be? It would be to slow down the rate of growth so that the village atmosphere of the towns would not be lost.

SPORT Coach wanted to fire Kyneton’s growing ambitions Kyneton has retained most of its playing group, – now the Tigers are hoping to get a coach on board to take them to the next level in the Central Victoria Football League Women’s competition. Tigers women’s football director and player Natalie Korinfsky said they hadn’t been able to find the right coach for the side as the start of the season draws closer. The coaching role is a paid position, which isn’t the case with all women’s football teams. “The coach who stepped in last year was only going to do it for a year as he was helping us out,” she said. “We’re looking for someone who is committed and with a bit of experience to help guide us. It’s important to get the right coach as it could make or break a team. “We’ve got a consistent group of players now and we want to build. We want someone to come along on the journey with us.”
Korinfsky said she was likely to step up and be an assistant coach, but knew the players needed someone with more experience to take on the main role. The club is also looking for a youth girls coach. Korinfsky said Kyneton was a welcoming club and was doing everything it could to make the place inclusive. “The club has held equality training and we’re building inclusiveness and that everyone is safe and welcomed,” she said. “We’re trying to change the football club.” Korinfsky said that culture had already seen them attract a few new players from Bendigo for this season but both teams are still looking for players ahead of the coming season. She said the women’s side had kept about 80 per cent of last year’s playing list. “We’re getting a couple of players back after having babies and we’ve been able to attract a
few players from Bendigo, which is nice,” she said. “We’ve had a few training sessions and there’s been new players attending. We’ve always got room for more players. “We aren’t a top team and we have not had the wins on the board, but with the right coach, I think we can change that.” The Tigers start pre-season training on February 6 at Kyneton Showgrounds. Roos rise to new challenge
By Tara Murray Malmsbury returned to the winners’ list in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield Sub District Firsts. Two straight losses knocked the side from the top of the ladder, but they bounced back on Saturday against Lancefield in a one-dayer. It was the Malmsbury bowlers who set the win up, restricting Lancefield to 8-145 from 40 overs. Just two Tiger batsmen, Jarryd McGill (55) and Mark Caton (34) reached double figures, with scoring made difficult. Tom Nelson was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets. Malmsbury president Garry Nicholls said they were happy to restrict them to that total. In the chase, Malmsbury lost two early wickets but had little trouble getting the runs, finishing 4-148. “We ran them down in 32 overs, so in the end we got the runs quite easily,” Nicholls said. Skipper Matthew Cox top scored with 40. Nicholls welcomed the win as the two teams played out a tie earlier in the season. The win keeps Malmsbury in the top four. They sit fourth, nine points behind first. Nicholls said they were more than happy with where they were sitting considering they went up a grade in the off season. “We got to finals last season but choked, which we have a habit of doing recently,” he said. “We want to play at the highest level possible. If we make finals this year, we might give it a crack about going up again.” The move up comes as the club plays in the GDCA for the second season after moving across from the Castlemaine and District Cricket Association. Nicholls said there were no regrets about making the move and they were happy with the standard of cricket. “When we voted to go, only three people didn’t want us to go,” he said. “It’s a good comp and we’re playing against some good sides. It also gives us the chance to show off our turf wicket [the only one in the GDCA]. “It’s good for us, as it helps get us extra players.” In good news for the club, renovation work at the ground is expected to start in the coming weeks. The club’s nets and fence will be replaced and there will be work done on the club rooms as well. New Sunbury Kangaroos netball coach Cassie Borg is excited by the challenge ahead this season. In the off season, the Kangaroos moved to the Essendon District Football League which is set to kick off a new competition this year after running a Rock Up Netball competition last season. It is Borg’s first foray into coaching. “We were looking for a coach for a couple of months,” she said. “I have been playing here for the last three years and I thought it was a good step to learn some new skills. “I’ve never coached before, but I’m excited to take on the role and see how we go.” Borg said moving to the EDFL was a good opportunity for a fresh start. The club has struggled to fill the full four-team quota expected in the Riddell District Netball League. The Kangaroos had just two teams last year and they only had one win between them. “It’s a good opportunity,” Borg said. “This year will be like a trial run to see how the competition is. “The last couple of years there has been a struggle for numbers. We’ve been competitive but we haven’t been able to get the wins over the line which is difficult. “It can be draining, but wins aren’t everything.” The Kangaroos held trials last week and plan to field two teams this season. Borg said anyone who couldn’t attend the trials was still welcome to come down to the club for pre-season training. “It’s a positive environment and we’re happy to get as many people on board as possible,” she said. “We’ve had a few put their names down as interested. Tigers’ roller coaster weekend before finals countdown Kyneton Tigers’ two performances at the weekend couldn’t have been more different in the final round of the Country Basketball League north east women’s competition. The Tigers put in a strong showing on Saturday night against the Swan Hill Lady Flyers, before backing it up with a flat performance against the Maryborough Blaze on Sunday. Tigers coach Chris Tighe said it was very much a Jekyll and Hyde performance. “We had a tough game on Saturday night and we played really well,” he said. “Michelle Fletcher was great. “Then today [Sunday] we played like traffic cones and they drove straight around us. “It wasn’t a good game at all.”
Tighe said he thought Saturday night’s game against the Lady Flyers had left them flat. The Tigers won 65-54. “We had some players play some big minutes to get that win.” The Tigers had to back up without Fletcher who was unavailable. Fellow big Rebecca Van Kuyk also missed the game after hurting her knee in the win against the Lady Flyers. Tighe said Van Kuyk would be right for finals starting this week, they just didn’t want to take any risks. Without those two, the Tigers lost to the Blaze 61-46. Jess Mangan was the only Tigers player to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points.
Tighe said that the Blaze couldn’t miss their shots, which made it a frustrating day. Despite the final round loss, the Tigers will still play finals as they finished fourth, but they have lost the home court advantage. They will travel to play the Myrtleford Saints on Saturday night. In their one previous game this season, the Tigers won by six points. Tighe said he was pleased the Tigers had made finals for a second straight season as the program is only in its second year. “Last year the girls did a great job and made finals,” he said. “We’re looking to take at least another one or two steps further and that has been our goal all season.
“The girls have embraced that. We’ve had some adversity and that’s become our mantra to just keep playing through it.” In the north-west men’s competition, the Tigers finished their season on the back of a double header. Already out of finals contention, the Tigers were playing for pride. On Saturday night they defeated the Flyers 89-70 with Carson Mcsweeney top scoring for the Tigers with 24 points. On Sunday, the Tigers lost a close one to Maryborough Blazers, 79-71. Matt Quinn top scored for the Tigers with 18. The Tigers finish the season in sixth spot. Tara Murray
Woodend hits solid form By Tara Murray Woodend is primed for a strong run at a finals spot in Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. After a slow start to the season, Woodend has won three out of its past four games to sit less then one per cent outside the top four. Woodend bowler Greg Matthews said the momentum was heartening. “We’re a bit more consistent with both the batting and bowling,” he said. “Our batters have started to work their way into the season and are starting to hit some good form. “We still need to keep winning and that’s the main message. “Games against the top sides like Gisborne and the teams we’re competing for a finals spot with, we need to win those games.” Matthews said the players were happy with how they were placed after day one of their match against Gisborne. Second-placed Gisborne made 221, bowled out with an over remaining. Jason Wilson top-scored for the Dragons with 72. Michael Nalesnyik was the pick of the bowlers for Woodend with 4-71. “We were pretty consistent and bowled in the right areas and executed the plan we wanted to,” Matthews said. Woodend faced two overs at the end of the day, emerging unscathed, and will resume at 0-0. Matthews said the side was fielding one of its strongest batting line-ups and confidence was high the target would be reached. Last time the two teams met, back in round one, Woodend was bowled out for 84. But Matthews said the team was in much better form. “If we make about three runs an over and bat our overs out, I think we should win,” he said. “We’ll back our batters to do it. “We’ve still got the full list in the sheds, so we just need to bat sensibly and with a positive intent.” In other matches, Sunbury United has the slight edge in the derby with Sunbury. Sunbury was bowled out for 165, Dylan Landt top-scoring with 48. Leif Louwen-Skovdam took 6-36 for Sunbury United. United faced 11 overs before stumps and will resume at 2-38. Romsey has already claimed first-innings points against Wallan. Romsey bowled Wallan out for 117 in just over 30 overs. Romsey finished the day at 4-196. Ladder leader Bacchus Marsh is in a prime position to add another win to its tally. The Bulls made 7-252 against Diggers Rest Bulla, with Milinda Sepala and Alex Porter both making 74. Up and down for Highlanders Central Highlands had a mixed week at the Youth Premier League under-18 cricket championships last week. Facing the other regions from across the state, the Highlanders finished the week with four wins to finish fourth in their pool. The Highlanders started the week well with two wins on the opening day. First up they defeated the Waves. The Highlanders batted first, making 3-121 from their 20 overs. Emerson White, a former Rupertswood player, top-scored with 33. The Highlanders restricted the Waves to 8-102, with Matt Harris taking four wickets. The Highlanders made it two from two when they defeated the Northern Falcons. The Highlanders made 7-124 before bowling the Falcons out for 96 in the final over. On day two, the Highlanders lost to the North West Wizards and Barwon. They lost to the Western Spirit to start day three. The Highlanders finished the competition on a high with two wins on the final day. First they defeated Mallee, with Jack Riding the key with 48 not out. Riding made 39 not out in the Highlanders win against the Rivers. Riding was the Highlanders best batsman for the tournament, finishing with an average of 51.50. The Highlanders shared the wickets around, with Joel Garbutt, Matt Harris and Fraser Hay taking seven wickets each. The Pioneers defeated the Rivers in the final at the Junction Oval. Tara Murray
