Fluttering fairies and magical mushrooms have taken up residence in Riddells Creek. The Enchanted Forest Sand Sculpting Exhibition showcases sculptures, each handcrafted from 30 tonnes of sand, to capture children’s imaginations. Exhibition tour guide Rosie Gallicchio said 11 international sculptors had created a dazzling display that tells an enchanting tale. “It’s a story about a little girl named Odette, with a rabbit named Tony, trying to find the missing fairy’s magical keys,” she said. “We wanted to bring the wonder of the beautiful part of living in a forest to life in sand sculptures.” Ms Gallicchio said children could feast their eyes on imaginary creatures that come to life through sand. “We’ve got fairies, unicorns, goblins, griffins, we’ve got mushroom people,” she said. Sunbury’s housing boost By Jessica Micallef Families and first home buyers are set to benefit from more affordable housing in a new Sunbury community. The state government has approved the Sunbury South and Lancefield Road Precinct Structure Plan, which will provide 19,000 homes and 6000 jobs close to schools, trains and upgraded roads, as part of its Homes for Victorians strategy.

The Victorian Planning Authority, together with Hume council, prepared the PSP for the new community, which will be next to Goonawarra and Jacksons Hill residential areas. Sunbury South will be developed over 20 years, with about 1000 houses expected to be built in the next five years. More than 2800 hectares will be available with almost 40 per cent of open space, including a regional park, a conservation network along

the Jacksons Creek corridor and a reserve at Redstone Hill. A town centre, health and emergency service facilities, six primary schools, two secondary schools and one prep-to-12 school are included in the plans. Land has also been set aside for two train stations, two bridge crossings in Jacksons Creek and three grade-separated road crossings of rail lines. Acting Premier Tim Pallas said the Sunbury South and Lancefield Road plan was important

for dealing with the rising population in Melbourne’s north. “We said we’d deliver an additional 100,000 lots, and we’ve got it done,” Mr Pallas said. “This increase in supply is also a boost to the construction industry, creating jobs. “This will ensure there is plenty of new housing coming to market to stay ahead of population growth and make new homes close to jobs, services and schools as affordable as possible.”

Crime down but thefts increase By Jessica Micallef Macedon Ranges overall crime levels have remained steady, but theft offences have hit a 10-year high, new figures reveal. The latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency reveals total crime across the Macedon Ranges dropped 2.06 per cent in 2017-18 compared to the previous year. That was despite a 21.26 per cent spike in theft offences (from 602 to 730) in the same period. There were 519 theft offences reported in 2016-15.

Macedon Ranges Acting Inspector Bruce Simpson said he was concerned about the rise in thefts. “It’s always a worry,” Acting Inspector Simpson said. “When you are going away, get someone to look after your house … simple things people can do to reduce thefts.” Acting Inspector Simpson said the police’s biggest area of concern was theft at service stations throughout the Macedon Ranges. Sexual offences – which includes rape, indecent assault, incest, sexual offences against

children and other sexual offences – dropped by nearly 50 per cent (from 110 to 57) in 2017-18. Drug use and possession offences fell by almost 30 per cent (from 137 to 97) in the 2017-2018 year. Acting Inspector Simpson said he was

pleased with the decrease in drug-related offences. Macedon Ranges Inspector Chris Large told Star Weekly last year that the execution of drug warrants across the Macedon Ranges was paying off and police were working hard to keep the community safe. “We know that illicit drug use can be linked to property crime, so this will remain a focus for us”, Inspector Large said. All other offences including robbery, blackmail and extortion, arson and breaking and entering remained steady during 2017-18.

Bowler’s golden run continues Krizanic has been a bowler since she was 15 and played at Keilor and Lalor before joining the Sunbury Bowling Club. The award nomination comes after a stellar 2018 for the athlete. Krizanic won two gold medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast – in the women’s triples and fours. She won the women’s state singles championship and claimed the women’s single

title at the Australian Championships in Merimbula, New South Wales. Krizanic said she had her sights set on winning gold, and maintaining her winning streak, in next year’s World Bowls Championships at the Gold Coast. The Victorian Sports Awards winners will be announced on February 20 at Marvel Stadium.

Carla Krizanic’s prowess in bowls keeps on delivering. The Sunbury lawn bowler has been named as a finalist for female athlete of the year in the Victorian Sports Awards. Krizanic said she was thrilled to become a finalist. “It was amazing,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting it … it’s great to be acknowledged.”

Cyclists in Kyneton, Woodend and Gisborne will find it easier to ride and park their bikes around their communities. The state government announced late last year $10,000 will go towards new bike facilities at key locations across the three towns. The new bike facilities are part of the Campaspe River Trail upgrade in partnership with the Macedon Ranges council. The council has contributed $200,000 to the project and will invest a further $30,000 to go towards the bike parking spots. The Macedon Ranges community participated in consultation throughout 2017 to discuss the locations for the new parking areas. The key spots identified were parks and gardens, community centres, town halls, showgrounds and post offices. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the new parking spots were a great way to encourage residents to maintain an active lifestyle. “Cycling is a great way to get around our towns, while staying active,” Ms Thomas said. “I’m delighted to help fund these new bike parks, which will encourage more people in Kyneton, Woodend and Gisborne to leave the car at home.” Late last year, the state government announced $2.7 million will go towards a new bike path between Kings Road through to Thompsons Road in Keilor North.

Ready, set, swim Children are making a big splash during the Gisborne Aquatic Centre’s summer holiday fun times. The centre offers a school holiday learn-to-swim program for children aged three years and up. Aquatic service officer Michelle Payne said the program was a great chance for children to build on their swimming and water safety skills. The 30-minute classes take place over five days, with 30 per cent of the children going up a level by the end of the program. “We strongly recommend [the program]

for parents with children who have anxiety or for children who don’t do lessons in the term,” Ms Payne said. She said about 100 children a week took part in the porgram. She said the pool inflatable was available between 1-3pm Monday to Friday throughout January for eager swimmers. Crews returned Monday, 07 January 2019, to continue work Road resurfacing works have recommenced, between Monegeetta and Lancefield. Crews are working across two sites between Monegeetta and Romsey, and Romsey and Lancefield. Between Monegeetta and Romsey, crews are widening the western side of Melbourne-Lancefield Road. Both lanes of traffic are open with reduced safer speed limits in place. Between Romsey and Lancefield, crews are continuing work to rebuild the surface of the road. This requires ongoing single lane closures in 1km stretches closest to Lancefield. There is 24/7 traffic management in place including reduced speeds and stop-go traffic controllers during peak hours to minimise delays.

Drivers stung in road crackdown By Jessica micallef More than 10 drivers a day, on average, were caught breaking the law on Macedon Ranges roads during the Christmas and New Year period. Police were out in full force on Victorian roads as part of the statewide Operation Roadside from December 14 to January 6. Police intercepted 273 drivers on Macedon Ranges roads, including 177 speeding drivers, along with 14 drivers disobeying traffic signals. Police nabbed 32 drivers driving unregistered

vehicles, while seven drivers were found driving unlicensed. Five drivers were caught using their mobile phones. Macedon Ranges Acting Police Inspector Bruce Simpson said that despite some unsafe behaviour, he was grateful Macedon Ranges drivers mostly enjoyed a safe Christmas. “We are pleased we didn’t have any fatalities on the Macedon roads,” Acting Inspector Simpson said. Five drivers were caught drug-driving in the region and 920 drug-driving offences were detected statewide.

Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane told The Age drug-driving was the biggest concern for police when it came to road safety. “We do know that there are more people on our roads using drugs,” Assistant Commissioner Leane said. “The number of people affected by drugs has now matched, or is starting to exceed, the number of people who have alcohol in their system. “Progressively, the number of alcohol affected drivers who lose their lives has been reducing … what we have been seeing for the past five or

10 years is an increase in the number of drivers who have drugs in their system.” He said drivers should always remain vigilant on the roads, no matter what time of the year it was. “We all have a part to play in keeping ourselves and others safe,” he said. “I encourage everyone who’s using our roads to think carefully about what they can do to keep themselves and others safe.” A total of 33,892 traffic offences were detected across Victoria during Operation Roadwise.

Four-legged friends and fin-tailed creatures will descend on PETstock Sunbury and Gisborne stores. The stores are taking part in the fifth annual National Pet Adoption Day on February 9. The initiative this year aims to double the number of pets adopted from 500 in 2018 to 1000. Every year, about 200,000 pets remain unclaimed in Australian pounds. PETstock’s Assist charity events co-ordinator Jess Guilfoyle said she hoped the National Pet Adoption day would encourage more Aussies to forget any preconceptions they have about rescued pets. “Every pet is unique and individual and I encourage people considering a new pet to keep an open mind,” Ms Guilfoyle said. “You may just be surprised by who you fall for. Passengers are hopping aboard miniature trains in Gisborne. The Gisborne Miniature Railway group is a not-for-profit organisation that takes people on a loop of a track on working engines. Railway co-ordinator Arthur Boyd said the trains have been running in Gisborne for the past 25 years. He said the railway was the perfect hang-out for parents to cure their children’s school holiday boredom. “It’s another venue for mums to consider to bring their kids to,” Mr Boyd said. “It’s good to see children’s faces lit up like Christmas trees.” After applying for a grant to the Gisborne

Bendigo Bank, the group received $10,000 which will go towards a storage facility for the trains. “I was pleasantly surprised,” Mr Boyd said. “We are extremely grateful for their investing and believing in our endeavours … [We] look forward to improving our set-up for the benefit of the community.” The railway is set up on the first Sunday of each month at the Gisborne market. Cannons aim for finals By Tara Murray

Tom Scott produced a season-high 22 points on Saturday night for Kyneton.

Castlemaine Cannons bolstered their finals hopes by defeating Kyneton Tigers in the Country Basketball League north west men’s competition. The Tigers were hoping for a win after encouraging signs before the Christmas break. They were quick out of the blocks and led by eight points at the first break. The Cannons began to find their groove in the second quarter and turned the deficit into a 65-56 lead at the main break. They kept the pressure on and increased the margin to 23 points heading into the final quarter. The Tigers did not give up and won the last quarter, but it wasn’t enough and they lost 109-95. Louis Bongiovanni lead the team well with 24 points including five three-pointers, while Tom Scott scored a season-high 22 points. Matt Quinn also had a good game with 18 points before being fouled out. The loss leaves the Tigers with just two wins heading into the final round of the season. They face Swan Hill Flyers and Maryborough Blazers in the final round as they hope to finish the season on a high. The finals-bound Tigers’ women’s side had a bye at the weekend in the north-east competition. They also face the Flyers and Blazers in double headers with the men’s matches and are playing for two more wins. Meanwhile, two Tigers players were named in the all-star 5 team for the north-east women’s competition. Jess Mangan and Molly Greetham were selected following coaches, players and fans votes.

SPORT Macedon’s tail the winning piece in thriller Macedon dug deep to win the closest of games against Malmsbury in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield Sub Districts Firsts competition. The Cats had to give everything they had against Malmsbury to cement their spot in the top two and all 11 batsmen were needed. Malmsbury elected to bat and made 9-141 from its 40 overs. Brendon Scott and Darcy Doyle took two wickets each. Cats captain Craig Pender said he thought it was a score they were more than capable of chasing down but the run chase became a lot harder than expected. “We didn’t think it would be that difficult,”

he said. “Malmsbury bowled really well and we lost 3-23 and then were 5-75.” The Cats youngsters and tail stood up when they were needed and hit the winning runs nine wickets down. The Cats added only one more run, before being bowled out for 143. Pender said they were ecstatic with the younger players. “Harry Brundell had not picked up a bat for three years and he top scored with 31,” Pender said. “He won the game for us. Pender said they had enjoyed the season. “We as a club had to make a difficult decision at the start of the season to drop down a grade,” he said. “We lost a number of players due to work and injuries and are playing quite a number of young players. “We are competitive every week now and it’s a real bonus for the club that the junior players are coming through.

“It was a good decision on the club’s behalf and hopefully we can stay competitive.” The Cats are only percentage behind Sunbury United, which is the form team of the competition, after winning five straight games. United defeated Rupertswood on Saturday. Rupo made 8-185, before United made 3-188. St Anthonys is also equal on points with the top two sides. The Saints defeated Blackwood in another high-scoring match. A Luke Malone century helped Lancefield to the win against Kyneton. Kyneton made 9-182 and the Tigers made 3-184 in reply. Burras tickled pink By Tara Murray The men in pink emerged victorious in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Premier Firsts T20 clash between Diggers Rest Bulla and Sunbury. The Diggers Rest Bulla players donned specially made pink uniforms as their club hosted a Pink Stumps and Ladies Day event. While the club has hosted Pink Stumps Days in the past, this was the first time it had hosted a Ladies Day as it looked to recognise the contribution women make to the club. On the field, the Burras had a solid win as they work on keeping their spot in the top four. They bowled Sunbury out for 78 with four overs remaining. Darren Quarrell and Anushka Thanthiri took three wickets each for the Burras. Youngster Mitchell McLean, in his first top-grade game, top scored for Sunbury with 18. The Burras had little trouble chasing the runs down, finishing 1-81 in a little more than 10 overs. Captain-coach Rasika Batepola top-scored with 48 not out. Speaking before the game, Burras all-rounder Kevin Barker said the Pink Stumps Day was a massive event that allowed the club to raise awareness and money for Breast Cancer Network Australia. “It’s a great cause and we want to get behind it,” he said. “This year we wanted to take it a step further … we wanted to pay tribute to the wives, girlfriends, sisters and mothers. “We want to go from strength to strength each year with this event.” Barker said it was unlikely to be the last time that the pink outfits would be on show. “In the T20 competition you’re allowed to wear coloured uniforms,” Barker said. “We’ve designed a pink uniform and we will wear it in all T20s going forward. “If we continue to play the T20s for points [like this season], we will make our home T20 match Pink Stumps and Ladies Day every year.” The win keeps the Burras sitting in fourth on the ladder as the competition returns to the two-day format. In other matches, Romsey fell short against Bacchus Marsh despite a century to skipper Ben Way. Way made 104 at the top of the order as the Redbacks made 5-155 from their overs. Way hit five fours and seven sixes as he dominated the innings. The Bulls had little trouble getting the runs, finishing 5-156 with 21 balls remaining. by beating Wallan. Woodend made 8-172 from its overs with Warren Else top-scoring with 47. Wallan fell well short, making 8-136. Gisborne also had a good win, beating Sunbury United. The Dragons made 6-157 from

their overs, with Jason Wilson top-scoring with 40 runs. Brandon Watts was the pick of the bowlers with 3-31. United didn’t get near that total, finishing 6-125.

Riddell’s love affair with T20 continued when it knocked off Rupertswood in Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts. Riddell has been one of the competition’s premier T20 sides in recent years and has showed why this season by winning both its matches. For the first time, the T20 matches are being played for points this season, making wins against the top two sides even more important. Rupo, second on the ladder, made 6-116 from its overs. Captain-coach Andrew Pizaro continued his good form, top-scoring with 52. Heath Brown and Daniel Fisk took two wickets each for Riddell. The Bombers had little trouble in the run chase, finishing 3-117 with four overs remaining. The win keeps the Bombers in fourth spot with just five and half points separating the top four sides. Ladder leader St Anthony’s tough T20 run continued with a loss to Gisborne. East Sunbury got its second win of the season, knocking off the in-form Bacchus Marsh, which is third on the ladder. In the other match, Ashfield kept the pressure on the top four with a win against the Eynesbury Eagles. Ashfield made 7-158 from its overs with captain-coach Mace Green top-scoring with 46. Highlands team happy with premier league progress The Central Highlands under-17 team finished a solid third in their pool in the Youth Premier League championship. The championship, which replaces the state titles, involves the best players from each region facing off to be the best region in the state. The Highlanders finished with a 4-3 record, including a win against the Western Spirit which finished second in their pool. Highlanders coach Simon Ogilvie was thrilled with how the competition panned out. “The girls have been really good and enjoyed the week and are a pretty close group now,” he said. “They’ve made memories for the rest of their lives. They did a lot better than what they could have hoped for.” Ogilvie said this year’s different format made it hard to judge how they would go. Last year, there was under-18s, under-16s and under-14s, where this time there’s only under-17s and under-14s. “We finished third in our pool, which is where about I saw us sitting,” Ogilvie said. “We finished about the same last year with

a similar group. We had some really good performances.” Their best performance was the win against the Spirit, who were in contention for the final until they came up against the Highlanders. Ogilvie said it all came together for that game. He said the standout element for the side during the week, and earlier matches in December, was the even bowling performance from the side. In most matches, nearly every player got a bowl. “We had to strike a balance between playing our best bowlers and sharing it around,” he said. “There’s girls who are playing state level cricket and then you’ve got other bowlers. “It didn’t feel like we were sharing it around. Girls that we could depend on, maybe thought we wouldn’t be depending on them at the start. “They took ownership with the ball.” Best with the bat was Tahlia Meier. Meier, who is part of the Vic Country under-15 team for the national championships, averaged about 47 across the seven matches.

Ogilvie said Meier, who still has another two years in the under-17 age group, was outstanding and was his overall player of the tournament. In a good sign for the Highlanders, most of the team will be eligible to be selected in the team next time round. “I think we lose three players, so it’s really good signs for the future,” Ogilvie said. “We’ve got 10 remaining in this age group and there’s pressure coming up from the under-14s which is healthy and there will be competition for spots.” Among those in the team were East Sunbury’s Jessica Hourigan, former Kyneton and Riddell player Charli Rose Copeland, Bacchus Marsh’s Tomeka Fowlie and Eve Lalor, and Hanging Rock and Gisborne’s Holly Robinson. Kelly lands captaincy By Tara Murray Sunbury’s Hunter Kelly has extra responsibility this week as he represents Victoria at the under-15 National Softball Championships. Kelly, who was part of the team last season, has this year been named captain of the side which is competing in Canberra. The 14-year-old said he didn’t even expect to be in the conversation to lead the team, having never captained before. “I’m stoked about it,” he said. “I was pretty shocked when it was announced. I feel like I’m getting used to it now. “I thought I would be a bit nervous in the role.” Kelly said his experience in the team last year had prepared him for what to expect this year and the pressure they would be under. He said the side had improved over the past five months of training and had high hopes for the championships. “I know most of the people and coaches,” he said. “We had some good people last year and we performed alright … I think we came fourth. “Hopefully we are a lot stronger this year. Most of the group are top-age players. “We’re a lot stronger than what we were five months ago and I think we are a good chance of winning it. “There’s a lot of confidence in the boys.” Kelly is set to share the pitching duties this week, with the youngster also able to play short stop. It’s been a rapid rise for Kelly, who only took up the sport in the past few years. He has some big ambitions and is hoping to continue to develop. “I was in year five at school and we had a school sports thing and I was in the softball team. “I met Russell Coleman [from Sunbury softball] and he invited me to come and play a few games and I loved it. “I played a few games there and made the Sunbury team and I was asked to try out for the state team [in 2017]. “It’s a fun sport … I just want to keep getting better and better and hopefully play for Australia.” John Kenny, who coaches Kelly at his local team the Sherwood Knights in Sunbury, said he was extremely proud of Kelly’s achievement. “When I started Sherwood Knights I aspired to see state players,” Kenny said. “To have one as captain, there’s a fair bit of pride. “I’ve seen him really develop the last three to four years and he’s now playing in our men’s team.”

Like Kelly, Kenny said he was surprised that Kelly had been named captain of the state team. But he said he understood why he was selected. “He’s a quiet kid who does the job and gets respect along the way and he does it with a smile on his face. “He listens and learns … He is respectful to others and has actual ability and it’s pretty

rare to have both. I think it’s the reason for him becoming captain of the state team.” Sunbury Association president Kathy Bedwell said it was encouraging for the association, which is the smallest in the state, to see players have success at a higher level. Kelly is one of two Sunbury players in the under-15 state team, with Nathan Duvall also selected.

Sunbury nails big win over Brunswick Sunbury’s hold on a top two spot continues to strengthen in Bowls Victoria Pennant, division 1, section 1. After delivering a strong first half of the season, Sunbury maintained a hot pace on Saturday against Brunswick and had no trouble in securing a 94 (16)-62 (2) victory. Mark Cowan’s rink won 20-18, Lee Wesley’s rink won 30-16 and Todd Trewarne’s rink won 29-9. Carla Krizanic’s rink had a rare defeat, losing 29-9. Sunbury’s David Glennon said Trewarne’s rink was the standout and Trewarne the best bowler of the day. He said it was always tough to win at Brunswick, so the team was thrilled to come away with such a big victory. Sunbury is second on the ladder with 171 points, having had just two losses for the season. It is 11 points behind Moonee Valley and 43 points ahead of third-placed Fitzroy Victoria. Glennon said having such a big gap on third took some pressure off the side, which was hoping to close the gap on Moonee Valley. “It is a weight off their shoulders that there isn’t real pressure on a top two spot,” he said. “We’ve just got to keep getting wins on the board. “We play Moonee Valley in three matches. Before that we face the bottom two sides in Essendon and Flem Ken [Flemington/Kensington]. “Hopefully, we can take the points and the gap to Moonee Valley has disappeared.” Overall, Sunbury experienced mixed fortunes on Saturday, with three of its six sides getting wins. The club’s No.2 side had a big win, while the No.3 side suffered a loss that knocked it from top spot. Three Sunbury sides sit in their respective top threes. In other Sunbury bowls news, Todd Trewarne and Marc Bullows won the Webbcona Classic pairs event during the Christmas break. The Central Highlands Bowls Division will resume action this Saturday.
