Holiday safety drive By Jessica Micallef Distracted drivers, high speeds and drink-driving will be a focus as police push for safe roads during the festive season. Macedon Ranges Inspector Chris Large said police would be out in full force as part of the statewide 24-day Operation Roadwise campaign. Inspector Large said there would be a higher police presence on Victorian roads, including drug and alcohol buses, to encourage safe driving. “Christmas and New Year is a significantly higher danger period,” Inspector Large said. Drivers are being encouraged to avoid driving while fatigued, stay off mobile phones, take extra caution on unfamiliar roads and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.”

Police will use their new, smaller alcohol and drug test buses to target those travelling to and from celebrations in suburban streets. They will also be out in force at popular holiday destinations in metropolitan and regional areas across the state, including Highway Patrol police carrying out drug testing. Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said drivers needed to think of their families while driving. “The festive season is not a time for motorists to get complacent,” Ms Neville said. “We want to ensure everyone gets to their destination safely and returns home to their families and friends. “If you’re going to drink, know how you’re going to get home. “If you’re going on a long road trip, know where and when you’re going to stop along the way.” Inspector Large said there had been “less fatal collisions on the road this year”, but still urged drivers to remain vigilant. “Don’t speed,” Mr Large said. “We don’t want anyone becoming a statistic. “Enjoy this time of the year.” Operation Roadwise started on Friday, December 14, and will finish on Sunday, January 6.

Grants offer a sporting chance By Jessica Micallef Sporting clubs in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges are set to receive a boost for female sport. Four clubs will share in more than $485,000 as part of VicHealth’s latest round of Active Club Grants. The grants provide between $3000 and $10,000 to increase female participation opportunities in community sport. The Kyneton District Soccer Club, Sunbury BMX Club, Sunbury Lawn Tennis Club and
Sunbury United Football Club are among the clubs listed to receive funding. Kyneton District Soccer Club will receive $2950 to introduce new female soccer teams for children and teenagers. Northern Victoria Region MP Wendy Lovell said the grants would help more residents get involved in sport. “Being part of a local sports club is a fantastic way for locals in the electorate to feel connected to their community and embrace a healthy lifestyle,” Ms Lovell said. “With these active club grants, local sport

School sows seed of remembrance St Mary’s Primary School in Lancefield has blossomed into life. In 2013, the school applied for a Gallipoli Oak seed through the National Trust of Australia’s Gallipoli Oaks Project. The school received a seedling earlier this year and has since built a remembrance garden with the tree as its centrepiece. School community liaison leader Jo Shannon
said the garden was a touching tribute, designed to honour the lives lost from six school families. “It’s a beautiful space for quiet time,” Ms Shannon said. “It’s a special space for people who have lost loved ones.” She said the school hosted fundraising events and received a generous amount of money from families which assisted with the costs involved

There’s a renewed push to install electronic chimes in the Woodend Clock Tower. Woodend resident and clock expert Dale O’Sullivan has launched a survey to garner support to have an electronic sound system installed in the tower, which is also the town’s war memorial. Mr O’Sullivan, a member of the Woodend and District Heritage Society, has long called for chimes to be installed. He’s hoping to get enough signatures in support of the chimes, to put a proposal to the Macedon Ranges council early next year. A Facebook community group, known as Times for Chimes Woodend has been created for people to have their say on the matter. Earlier this year a local family campaigned to have chimes installed at the clocktower but at the time the idea was knocked back by Woodend RSL and Macedon Ranges council. With or without chimes, the clocktower is set for a major overhaul. During its November council meeting, the council said the clocktower would receive repair works to its flagpole, clock face, painting upgrades, balcony and balustrades refurbishment and an upgrade to the doors and entry steps. The council has obtained $30,000 from the state government’s Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues Honour Grant Scheme for the work. The council will also contribute $30,000 to the project. Refurbishment on the clock is expected to be completed in time for Anzac Day 2019.

Dogs pass the sniff test Hanging Rock has become the latest hangout for dogs. Four-legged friends were used by La Trobe University Bendigo researchers to find evidence of greater gliders – small gliding marsupials – at the rock in an effort to better protect vulnerable species in the area. University PhD researcher Nick Rutter said this was the first time the dogs had been involved in a project like this and were finding endangered animals through scents. Mr Rutter said the dogs, owned by community volunteers, underwent extensive training over the past year and a half to recognise the scent of the marsupials’ faeces or scats. “In the last five weeks, they were trained to look for greater gliders through their scent,” Mr
Rutter said. “This was done through positive reinforcement. “The dog gets a reward for sniffing out the scent … it was a fun game for the dogs.” Mr Rutter said it took the dogs a certain level of obedience to participate in the project. “The dogs needed to be safe around other animals and needed to work well with the handler,” Mr Rutter said. He said the dogs will search Wombat State Forest throughout December and into next year in the hope of finding evidence of gliders. Aware and alert call for residents Hume mayor Cr Carly Moore has reminded residents to be safe during summer. Cr Moore said heatwaves, fire and extreme weather conditions were all realities of an Australian summer. “You are not guaranteed warning of changing weather conditions, so residents need to plan, prepare and be ready for extreme weather events,” Cr Moore said. “If you plan to spend time in and around water this summer, you must know how to swim, keep watch and take appropriate precautions to ensure you and your family are safe.” Officer in charge at Sunbury fire station Brian Scown said families need to have a tested bushfire plan in place. “It’s important everyone knows what the plan is,” Mr Scown said. “If you’re going to leave early, leave early.” He warned against residents staying to protect their homes during a fire. “Defending property is a big decision and a big risk,” he said. He also advised pet owners to pack enough bedding, food and water for their animals. Mr Scown said Victorians can expect a higher than average fire danger this year, with some areas, particularly Macedon, already drying out faster than usual. He said residents should already have started downloading fire apps. “Be aware and be alert,” he said.
Racing prodigy Nick Schembri has capped off a remarkable year of kart racing. The 16-year-old, who races in Sunbury, was crowned 2018 Superkart Driver Of The Year and 2018 Class Champion in the no gearbox light category. Schembri said it was a terrific way to end the year. “It’s been a really good year – I achieved so much more than I set out to do,” he said. Schembri entered 2018 with a goal to record a number of wins in the non-gearbox category – which he achieved. However he also had an ambition to try his hand at one or two races in the 125 gearbox category. Although he expected to only take part in a handful of races, Schembri outperformed even his own expectations and won the state championships. “I wasn’t expecting to even really be racing in the 125 gearbox category so to win the state championships was amazing,” he said. “Next year I’ll look to do a bit more gearbox racing and hopefully I can win a national or state championship.” Gearbox karts reach speeds of up to 190km/h and Schembri said he put in many hours of practice to adjust to the fast pace. “The karts with no gearbox go at about 150km/h so there’s a bit of a difference,” he said. “It does make a difference in driving, but that’s what I practice for. “Some of the people who race have been doing this for years and they’ve been a really big help in getting me to this point as quickly as I have.”

Macedon Pony Club has galloped into winning territory. The club won the games state title at the Games Flat Teams & Musical Ride State Championships in Gladysdale against 23 teams. Last month’s event consisted of six games involving high speed riding, vaulting and horsemanship skills. Werribee Pony Club district commissioner Wayne Cuthbert said the Macedon team was the best he had seen. “I’ve been watching and coaching games teams for the annual zone qualifying and state
events since the 1990s,” he said. “The win was a credit to the way the Macedon team rode and handled themselves on the day.” Macedon Pony Club life member Norm Glenn said winning wasn’t everything. “Whilst the club loves to compete, we are first and foremost focused on fun and the development of quality youth and lifelong friendships,” he said. “Then development of skilled riders in all the horse-riding disciplines.” It is the fourth time the club has won the state title since 1973. Say hello to Sunbury bury residents are saying hello to their community. Sunburyy Community Health group Together Sunburyy has come up with a campaign called Just Sa Sayy Hello to encourage frien f dliness in the neighbourhood. Communityy Health board of directors chair Peter Donlon said the campaign is a result of a group member’s experience off walking in Williamstown, saying ‘hello’ to people in the street. Mr Donlon said he wanted to replicate this in Sunbury. y
“We’ve got a nice friendlyy community … when you’re walking your dog or walking with your frien f ds, just say hello,” Mr Donlon said. “It’s a little project to help build community.” Mr Donlon said there was a similar process on social media. Sunbury fun for net set Sunbury Lawn Tennis Club is inviting seniors to get back into the swing of exercise. The club has a dedicated session every Monday morning between 9am-noon for seniors to have a crack at casual tennis matches, followed by a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Club coach David Theuma said the open sessions were great for older people to keep active.
“You’re never too old to play tennis,” he said. Mr Theuma said 15 to 20 people usually attended the Monday sessions, which provided great exercise, particularly for those who used to play tennis. Those interested should contact June Morton on 0403 195 586. Jessica Micallef

Meet your furniture whiz BINH (BEN) NGUYEN OWNER, HARVEY NORMAN WATERGARDENS FURNITURE What time is your alarm set for and what’s on your bedside table? My clock-radio wakes me up to Fox FM at 7am. As well as the radio, I have family photos, phone charger and a book about money matters on my bedside table right now. Where will you spend Christmas Day this year? We will be with my wife’s extended family at the house of my brother-in-law. We do KK and there are lots of kids – about 12, including my four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. What’s your favourite piece of furniture in your own home? It would have to be my four-seater lounge which is nice and deep and lets me slouch while I watch TV or get on my iPad. It’s grey and we have colourful cushions – and, of course, it’s from Harvey Norman and actually made in Melbourne. What’s the latest in home furniture? Natural fabrics are overtaking leather in lounges, and green is a really popular shade for cushions – especially the jungle prints. Ottomans in green shades to match neutrals in the couch are also making waves. Solid timber remains the favourite for dining settings. Customers generally look for natural materials. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir takes up residence at Dumpling House Tina’s Dumpling House is a major arrival in Altona. The food at Tina’s is good and the prices and service righteous – so much so that Altona locals will surely ensure its success and residents of the wider west are advised to consider it a destination. Indeed, in terms of quality for this kind of food, the prices are bang on par with what’s available elsewhere. As well, most dumplings can be had in variable serving sizes of six or 12 pieces. Of course, Tina’s is not just about dumplings – there’s a range of main courses, rice dishes and noodles available. And, yes, you can get here lemon chicken or sweet-and-sour pork if that is your bent. Tina’s has taken over a Pier Street premises long home to a previous Chinese restaurant. It’s a lovely room in which to sup. The wait time of 15 to 20 minutes for dumplings is re-assuring in terms of knowing a house-made philosophy is in play. Pan-fried pork-and-cabbage dumplings ($7.80 for six, $11.80 for 12) are terrific. All too often, we find the meaty centres of such dumplings have a turd-like toughness – even good ones! At Tina’s, the fillings are luscious and tender. Steamed prawn dumplings ($7.80 for four) are just as good, with a full quotient of that essential bursty prawn effect going on. Steamed barbecue pork buns ($6.80 for two) are, for me, a revelation.
TINA’S DUMPLING HOUSE Address: 54 Pier Street, Altona Phone: 9398 8851 We usually order these for bun fan boy Bennie, while I remain bemused and/or unimpressed. This plump pair are superb and make a fan boy out of me – like son, like father. The fluffy/moist buns are stuffed with a more generous than usual mix of hot, sticky chopped pork heavily perfumed with rice wine. Beef brisket soup noodle is one of our regular choices, but always with egg noodles. At Tina’s, we stumble into a rendition made with rice noodles, their whiteness imbuing the bowl with a pallidness that suggests bland. But there’s no doubting the robustness of the broth or the pleasure to be had from the excellent, tender chunks of beef ($11.80). Food lore tells us that there’s nothing Singaporean about Singapore fried noodles – just as there is nothing Chinese about egg foo young. But that doesn’t mean a dish of “Singapore” fried noodles, often less oily than other Chinese wok-fried noodle dishes and with a fetching grittiness delivered by curry powder, cannot be immensely enjoyable and satisfying. Kangaroos add depth as they look to new season The Sunbury Kangaroos have had an encouraging off season as they look to have an impact in next year’s Essendon District Football League division 2. The Kangaroos have added several key players to ensure they are at least competitive in their new league, having made the switch from the Riddell District Football League. Kangaroos’ coach Anthony Leydin said the club was aware of a few areas that needed addressing. heading into next season. This year, the Kangaroos finished eighth in the RDFL, with just six wins. “We’ve brought in experience and some top-end talent,” Leydin said. “We’ve also brought some in around the middle tier, so it puts more pressure on everyone to perform. “Last season depth hurt us and we knew that going into the season. That was more exposed as the season went on.” Many of the Kangaroos recruits have either
connections to the club or live in the Sunbury area. St Albans’ trio Lachlan Baddeley, Matt Quigley and Michael Spooner have come across together. Key forward Baddeley, whose brother plays at the Kangaroos, and midfielder Quigley, both bring VFL experience. Nathan Caldone and Nick Angello have come across from Rupertswood, while Jake Young returns to the Kangaroos after a stint at Glenroy. Mick Kilty, a Diggers Rest premiership player, has signed on as a playing assistant coach. Leydin said having a playing assistant coach would be a different experience for the playing group. “Mick comes with a lot of experience and a high football IQ which the players will benefit from.” Simon Atherton has also joined as an assistant coach. The remainder of the coaching group stays the same.
Leydin said they hadn’t finished their recruiting. “We still probably want to get another one or two players before we get things under way next year.” He said early signs were good, with close to 50 players on the track for their first training session in late November. He said it was a lot more than they had the same time last year and it was hopefully a sign of things to come. “At this stage we are pretty satisfied with where we are at,” he said. “We’ll work on things the next few months and hopefully keep going the way we are going.” Most of the Kangaroos playing group has re-signed, with only Matthew Wallace from their best 22 not returning, having signed with premier division side Pascoe Vale. Bulldogs up for the fight By Tara Murray Gisborne’s intentions are clear. The Bulldogs, one of the biggest improvers in the Bendigo Football League this year, have spent the off season adding some quality recruits. And while Bulldogs coach Clinton Young said they were super proud of this year, when they returned to the top five and finals, they weren’t content with that performance. “We feel as a team we’ve made great inroads. We want to have a really good pre-season and want to be regarded as one of the teams up the top of the ladder challenging,” he said. “We have got games into young players … we made finals and we were keen to add some more depth.” The Bulldogs haven’t had to look far to add some quality recruits, with most of the new players familiar to the club or at least the Gisborne community. Former Greater Western Sydney and Melbourne listed player Pat McKenna returns home to his junior club in a full-time capacity. Jim Ferry, another Gisborne junior, returns after playing with Essendon’s VFL side. Young said both McKenna and Ferry would be assistant coaches. The Bulldogs have also welcomed back Casey Summerfield and Tim and Scott Walsh. The three left the Bulldogs for the Riddell District Football League at the end of the 2015 season. Young said they would add a lot of leadership. “They are keen to come back and continue the momentum of last year,” he said. “We’re in a strong position and we have these guys returning who are highly determined players. “These guys have played finals footy at the club. It’s more experience back in the group and they can impart their knowledge on the group.” The Bulldogs young midfield has also received another boost with Brad Bernacki joining the club. Bernacki, who captained the Calder Cannons and won their best and fairest in 2017, comes across from East Sunbury and Coburg VFL. Young said Bernacki would play full-time at the Bulldogs, having decided not to continue playing VFL. “He lives in Gisborne so we are thrilled to get him signed on. “I’ve heard he is a tough on-baller and I’m really happy to have him play for us.” Dylan Clayton, who is part of the Simon Black Academy where Young works, rounds out the signings. Young said they were unlikely to add anyone

else, with the club keen to continue to bring through the younger players. “It’s a huge bonus that the 18s team won the premiership this year and we have a lot of young guys coming up as well. “The senior depth is going to be much better next year. Hopefully that will flow onto the
reserves as well … This year we were calling around to find reserves players.” As well as adding a number of new players, the Bulldogs have pretty much re-signed their whole list. Those not returning are Ross Celano, who can’t commit because he’s moving, and Riley Patterson, who has moved to Riddell.

Gisborne puts the call out for more women Gisborne is on the hunt for more players to join its women’s football team. The Bulldogs, which have had a team for two seasons, are hoping there might be a few people who are looking to give the sport a go, with pre-season training already under way. New Bulldogs coach Jason Peak said there had been consistent numbers at training. “We’ve had pretty much low teens every session,” he said. “They tell me it’s healthier than this time last year, but doing the calculations I would like a few more than that. We’ve had five new players come down so far.” Peak said while they had looked like they had picked up some players, they had lost a number of the more experienced heads from the past two seasons who have decided not to play on. He said losing that leadership on the field would hurt, with a number of younger girls in the side. Among them are four players who have come up from this year’s under-18s. “Just about everyone we thought would come up from under-18s has come up and we’ll have a few more in the next few years. “A lot of the younger girls have been playing with the boys … Some have played consistently since they were young girls,” Peak said. “Their skill level it pretty good. “We’ll look to play a couple of top age under-18s in a few games next season to give them a taste as well.” Peak said they were looking for players who are interested in getting involved in football and want to play. He said it doesn’t matter what age and ability the players are. “We just want to make sure that anyone thinking they want to play doesn’t miss out,” he said. “You don’t have to have any experience, even if you just want to get fit you can come down.” The Bulldogs will have their last two training sessions before Christmas on Tuesday and Thursday [December 18 and 20] at JD Clifford Reserve. Rivalry round locked in By Tara Murray Local rivalries will kick off the Riddell District Football Netball League season next year. After having the opening round split over multiple weekends and days the past few years, all sides will start their season on April 6. Reigning premiers Diggers Rest will host Rupertswood, Macedon and Riddell will play for the ‘PUKA UP Cup’ for a second straight year, Lancefield will play Woodend-Hesket, Rockbank and Melton Centrals will do battle and Wallan hosts Broadford. Romsey has a bye in the opening round, with the departure of the Sunbury Kangaroos leaving the competition with 11 teams. There will be no games on the Easter weekend or interleague weekend on May 18, but the competition will return to having matches on Queen’s Birthday. Highlight matches include the annual Anzac Day clash between Macedon and Rupertswood, Romsey’s Pink Day on May 11 and Woodend-Hesket hosting Macedon for the Bill Tunn Cup in found five. Fans won’t have to wait long for the grand final rematch between Diggers Rest and Riddell, with the game coming in round two. Woodend-Hesket won’t host a home game until round five with upgrades happening at its home ground, Gilbert Gordon Oval. The season will be played over 18 rounds, with each team playing 16 games. Despite one less team in the competition, the finals structure will stay at a final six. Grand final day will be Sunday September 15. Meanwhile the Ballarat Football Netball League released a draft fixture for next year. The Sunbury Lions are set to start their season on April 13 against North Ballarat City away.

The Central Highlands under-18 boys side will play in the under-18 Youth Premier League next month. The tournament, formally known as the Cricket Victoria under-18 male state championships, will see the best cricketers in the state do battle. Several local residents will be among the Highlanders team, with eight players returning from last season. Among those in the team are former Rupertswood batsman Emerson White, former Gisborne player Riley Vernon, Gisborne’s Joel Garbutt, Riddell’s Ben Radford and Bacchus Marsh’s Jacob Pawlowicz.
