Fatal crash driver jailed A young driver who was distracted changing music on her car radio when she fatally struck a cyclist, sobbed as she was sent to prison for nine months. Emma Kent, 24, was sentenced to jail and a two-year community corrections order in the Victorian County Court last week. She was trying to connect her phone’s Bluetooth to the car audio when she struck 57-year-old Gareth Davies on Black Forest Drive at Macedon on December 10 last year. Judge Sue Pullen noted Kent expressed remorse and guilt for her actions but insisted a term of imprisonment was needed. “The distress to both families, Mr Davies’ and your own, is evident,” she said. “But their loss is permanent.” Kent told police she was distracted for about 10 seconds. She pleaded guilty to one charge of dangerous driving causing death.

Kent sobbed throughout the proceeding and appeared shocked as the sentence was announced. Tears also flowed during Kent’s court hearing on November 14 when Mr Davies’ daughters recounted their loss. “In the first 24 hours after I found out, it felt like the world and my life was ending,” Rhia Davies told the court. Before the accident, Mr Davies’ family had been looking forward to visiting Wales for Christmas with their father. “The last memory of my dad was coming into my room the night before the accident, so excited, telling me there were only two more weeks before we’re going to Wales to see his family,” Ms Davies said, through tears. “My dad is permanently out of my life solely because of the actions of the accused in this crime.” Her younger sister, Ffion, said the memory of having to tell her grandmother of his death still haunted her. “After my dad was killed, my whole world fell apart,” she said. Kent’s defence said she had always pleaded guilty and was remorseful. “It could hardly be said she was unaffected,” he said. The defence called for a community corrections order, but the prosecution argued the offending was serious and deserved jail. – The Age

Those scouting for Christmas trees in the Sunbury area are in luck. The 3rd Sunbury Scouts Group is selling Christmas trees to raise money to help it continue to prosper. Joey leader Marlo Aisbett said the Christmas tree sale, in its 12th year, was the group’s biggest fundraising event of the year. “It’s a great thing for the community to get trees and it’s great for the Scouts,” she said. Ms Aisbett said money raised would go towards programs and repairs on the Scout hall. “It goes straight to the Scout group,” Ms Aisbett said. “It goes towards maintenance on the hall, leader training, camps and to youth members.” Tree prices start from $50. They can be picked up at Max Gifford Hall, 8 Miller Street, Sunbury, on Saturday, December 8, between 9am-3pm. High time for clock tower works By Jessica Micallef The Woodend Clock Tower is set to be restored. Macedon Ranges council successfully obtained $30,000 from the state government’s Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues Honour Grant Scheme. The council will also contribute $30,000 to the refurbishment, which is expected to be completed in time for Anzac Day 2019. The project involves roof and flagpole repairs, clock face repairs and renewal, balcony and balustrades refurbishment, external repairs
and painting and an upgrade to the doors and entry steps. Macedon Ranges council chief executive Margot Stork welcomed the funding. “This will ensure the structure, which was constructed in 1927 will stand proudly in the streetscape for a further 90 years,” Ms Stork said. Earlier this year a local family put forward a proposal to install an electronic sound system to add a chime or ringing bell into the clock. Ms Stork said the proposal also included a request to acknowledge and recognise Peter
O’Sullivan in some form, on the basis of a proposed undefined financial contribution to the project. The plan was knocked back by the council. “It was considered inappropriate to link a significant war memorial with any one individual,” Ms Stork said. She said council officers assessed and declined the proposal because of the lack of financial commitment to the plans, historical evidence supporting the proposal and lack of support from the local RSL. Woodend RSL president Peter Whitelaw said
the clock tower was never designed or intended to have chimes. “The Woodend and District Heritage Society researched the history of the clock and there were no records of chimes,” Mr Whitelaw said. “The Woodend RSL considered the proposal in early 2018 to put in chimes and we deemed it inappropriate. “It’s a registered World War One memorial … it should not be disturbed. “Most locals wouldn’t want chimes ringing every hour on the hour.”

Fresh help for Macedon volunteers A new volunteer resource centre has opened in Kyneton. The centre will offer free advice and guidance about volunteer roles across the Macedon Ranges. Cobaw Community Health chief executive Margaret McDonald said it was for all community members who are interested in volunteering and provided a “great opportunity
to increase volunteers.” The centre will also offer support, coaching and resources to organisations looking to recruit potential volunteers. “Volunteering not only benefits the organisation you are helping, but is a great way to make new friends, learn new skills, find new levels of fulfilment and self-confidence as well as become more connected with your

Store manager Ben Ebell said he was delighted to open the doors of the new supermarket and share the store features with the community. “We are thrilled to be bringing a state-of-the-art Coles supermarket to regional Victoria which will create so many new jobs in Woodend,” Mr Ebell said. “We have a number of young adults starting their first job ever and we’re delighted to welcome experienced Coles team members across the store who have been serving locals for decades.” Mr Ebell said the Coles community will support local organisations through fundraising initiatives. “We will be donating food and drinks to the local CFA firefighters on total fire ban days throughout summer,” Mr Ebell said. “We’re also sponsoring the Woodend Hesket Football Netball Club, Rotary Club and Bowling Club, as well supporting local businesses such as Josh’s Eggs.” The new store opened last Wednesday. Red-letter day for shop By Jessica Micallef Sunbury Red Cross has reached a milestone, celebrating its 20th birthday last week. Retail area manager Chris Drossos said the store’s intention has remained the same over the past two decades. “The store solely exists to help vulnerable people within the community,” Mr Drossos said. “The money raised from the store goes to helping other people. “It’s our sole intention.” Long-time volunteer at the store Mary Kloss said she started helping out at the Red Cross in 2000. She said it was a way to give back after the Canadian Red Cross helped her before she moved to Australia in 1957. “I was a refugee from Austria,” she said. “It [volunteering] was my way to say thank you.” Ms Kloss helps out one day a week at the Sunbury Red Cross. She said spending time with fellow volunteers was one of the best aspects of the day. “Making money for the Red Cross, advertising the Red Cross and helping out,” Ms Kloss said. “The people who work in the shop are very nice … very good friends, I enjoy the company.” Mr Drossos said the store offered affordable clothing, both new and pre-loved, and gave locals the opportunity to come into the store and chat with the volunteers. He said the store has 30 volunteers from Sunbury and surrounding areas. “Some volunteers work for four hours a week minimum, but some do an eight hour day and some do two full days,” he said. To celebrate its 20th birthday, the store is offering 25 per cent off store-wide.

Caring women band together Women have joined together to help support a local cause. Sunbury disability service provider Distinctive Options has been fundraising for neighbouring organisation CareWorks Sunbury – a not-for-profit crisis relief centre that provides care and support to those in need in the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges. Distinctive Options young adults co-ordinator Melanie Mays said the Ladies Only group from the company focused on an initiative to provide health and sanitary products for women and families. Ms Mays said with raffles, and with support from Chemist Warehouse and Bendigo Bank, Distinctive Options was able to raise $468 and collect enough products to create three larger hampers. “The money will go towards care items for adults, children and babies like soaps, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes and pampering items,” Ms Mays said.

Aaron hits the right note At only nine years of age, Sunbury’s Aaron David is already a seasoned performer. The singer, dancer and actor has appeared in musicals including Kinky Boots and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Now he’s about to grace the stage with Australian singer songwriter Tina Arena as part of the cast of Evita the Musical. The youngster, who will be part of the children’s ensemble, said he was looking forward to performing alongside Arena. “Yeah I’m very excited,” he said. “I love doing musicals and I like doing dancing and acting.” He said his favourite was Kinky Boots because he got to tour around Australia.

The human potential’s there. “The person that came first place would be studying around 12, 13 hours a day to get to that. “These are elite athletes. These people are like the superheroes – they’ve got amazing brains. “We’re looking at learning say, five or six decks of playing cards in five minutes.” Ms Lang likened her memory training to the styles of tennis legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Woodend post office is keeping its doors open longer during the Christmas period. The post office, located at 43 Anslow Street, will offer extended retail hours of 9am-6pm Monday to Friday and 9am-noon Saturday through to December 21. Australia Post general manager David McNamara said extended trading hours gave customers more choice and convenience to send and receive letters and gifts during the festive season. “We know Christmas is a really busy time of the year so we are giving our customers greater flexibility to come in and send all their presents, or pick them up when it best suits them,” Mr McNamara said. “By keeping our doors open longer, we’re making it easier for them.” Mr McNamara said online sales had been strong this year. “With the online shopping boom continuing, we’re delivering record volumes and we want to make sure our customers have convenient access to our products and services to help them get ready for the big day,” Mr McNamara said. “We want to make sure they have a great delivery experience.” Australia Post announced last month that close to 3000 additional employees have been hired to work over the Christmas period. The Sunbury resident chats with Jessica Micallef about her interest in art and her involvement with the Phoenix Art and Craft Group. What is your connection with the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges area? I have a lifelong connection with the area. I spent my childhood at Mount Macedon and attended the Mount Macedon Primary School for six years. When I got married we bought a property in Macedon to raise our family and we lived there for 25 years. I moved to Sunbury in 1998 and have lived here for the past 20 years. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about my volunteer work in Cambodia. I am an ambassador for the 4 Winds Cambodia Project. This is a rural community development project in a small village of 3000 marginalised people. The main focus is health, education and income generation. I have been going to Cambodia for 15 years and have witnessed miracles. I am also constantly amazed at the progress of these beautiful people through education, care and love. Tell me about your involvement with Phoenix Art and Craft Group. I have been a member of this group for four years. I am currently the president. Our group is made up of 15 talented members creating a large variety of art and craft. We have two exhibitions a year, in March and December, at the Old Courthouse in Gisborne.

Tell me about your interest in art and the pieces you have created. I have a passion for glass. I did leadlight for many years but have been doing hand painted kiln-fired glass for 10 years. I consider myself a glass artist. I create kiln-fired glass framed pictures, cheese platters, plates, coasters and
jewellery. All of the money I raise from the sale of my glass pieces goes to the 4 Winds Cambodia Project. What other hats do you wear in the community? I am an active member of the Woodend Art Group, Phoenix Art and Craft Group in Gisborne, the Sunbury Art Society and I am also a member of the Bacchus Marsh Art Cooperative. What would people be surprised to know about you? I think people would be surprised to know I have travelled extensively to 53 countries so far and have parachuted, abseiled, water-skied, aqua sailed and gone ballooning. What is the best thing about the Sunbury and Macedon area? I have wonderful memories of the past, living at Mount Macedon and Macedon and working in the area, I worked for seven years at the Kyneton Hospital and 20 wonderful years at the Sunbury Community Health Centre, until I retired eight years ago. We have clean fresh air here, beautiful trees, flora and fauna and we still have a lovely country feel. If you could change one thing about the area what would it be? I would like a nice big shopping complex in Sunbury like they have at Watergardens. I think everyone in Sunbury would enjoy not having to go out of the area to shop and it would keep our money local. I also think we need better parking here.

Romsey loses its way

Gisborne has added midfield talent to its squad with Brad Bernacki joining the Bulldogs. Bernacki, a key member of East Sunbury’s Essendon District Football League division 2 grand final run, played six games with Coburg in the VFL this year. The South Gisborne resident previously starred with the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup. The Bulldogs had already announced the signings of Tim and Scott Walsh, James Ferry, Patrick McKenna and Casey Summerfield. The Bulldogs will start their 2019 season against Castlemaine on April 13 before facing Kyneton in the following round on Good Friday.
By Tara Murray Romsey has suffered a second straight loss, this time at the hands of Bacchus Marsh, in Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. After making 204 on day one, Romsey was looking to restrict the Bulls early on day two. While Romsey got an early wicket, it was a while before it got another. The Bulls put on 170 for the second wicket, the partnership of Alex Porter and James Lidgett getting within sight of victory. Not long after that the Bulls hit the winning runs, going on to make 4-324. Taylor Stevenson was the only multiple wicketaker for Romsey, grabbing two. Despite the loss, Romsey remains in third spot on the ladder. Gisborne kept the pressure on Bacchus Marsh by accounting for Sunbury United. Second-placed Gisborne finished 5-141 in reply to United’s 9-139 in a match played as a one-dayer as there was no play on day one. Dragons skipper Jarryd Vernon was the pick of the batsmen, making 64 not out. Woodend’s tail did enough to get across the line against Wallan. Woodend resumed at 8-137 in reply to Wallan’s 142 and passed the total with no trouble on day two. Woodend was eventually all out for 211, with their bottom three batsmen scoring 92 of them. Wallan was 1-92 in its second innings. Chasing Diggers Rest Bulla’s 245, Sunbury was bowled out for just 107, Jason McGann top scoring with 25. The Roar lost its last five wickets for 12 runs. Anushka Thanthiri took 4-38 to be the pick of the bowlers for the Burras. The Burras remain in fourth, but have closed the gap on third-placed Romsey.
Cricket
Rupertswood sits on top of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts ladder after a big win against Riddell. Having made 334, Rupo restricted Riddell to 247, with John Lane taking 4-76. Eynesbury avoided an outright loss against Ashfield. After dismissing the Eagles for 87 on day one, Ashfield made 2-204, including a century to Corey Woolley. The Eagles made 6-136 in their second innings. In other matches, St Anthonys defeated Gisborne and Bacchus Marsh was too good for East Sunbury.

Kyneton pulls off surprise with narrow away win Kyneton has come from behind to knock off Bacchus Marsh in Central Highlands Bowls’ top division. Kyneton trailed by 15 shots at the tea break, but turned it around from there to grab a three-shot 84 (15)-81 (3) win. Alexander Stewart and Mark Smoljo were the winning skips for Kyneton, while Craig Vincent’s rink split the points. Kyneton president Bob Short said it was a win the side needed. “We wanted to win on their home ground,” Short said. “We had to win to keep in touch with the top two sides. It’s always hard to win at Bacchus Marsh, so it wasn’t expected. “It was a surprise, but we put the effort in to come back from being down at half-time.” Short said the win was made more pleasing because they were missing two players from the top side. Kyneton remains in third spot, but there’s only six points between it and the sides above.
Short said the side believed a key area in its bid to finish in the top two was to continue to knock off the other top sides while making sure not to drop matches against the bottom sides. “In previous years, we’ve lost games against the Trenthams and Romseys that we should have won,” he said. “We’re a little bit more determined and focused to make sure we don’t do that this year. “We’ve learnt from the past. This year we’ve been beating the sides we should beat.” Having knocked off Bacchus Marsh, Kyneton will face a challenge just as big this weekend in the form of new ladder leader Kyneton Golf. Kyneton’s second division sides are sitting fourth and fifth, while its division 3 side won its first match of the season on Saturday. Stewart said the division 3 side contained a lot of young players, including a few 11-year-olds. At the other end of the scale, the side also boasts an 86-year-old.
Stewart said the club was putting a real focus on its junior development and had several players in Victorian junior development squads. In other division 1 results, Lancefield took all 18 points against Gisborne Yellow, Gisborne Red beat Romsey and Kyneton Golf smashed Trentham. In Bowls Victoria Pennant, Sunbury claimed all 18 points against Werribee in division 1, section 1. Second-placed Sunbury won 91 (18)-59 (0). Lee Wesley’s rink won 17-15 and Mark Cowan’s rink snuck home by 17-16. Todd Trewarne’s rink picked up 13 shots in the last five ends to win 28-16, and Carla Krizanic’s rink had the biggest success of the day, winning 29-12. Tigers toil for no reward By Tara Murray Kyneton Tigers continue to fight hard, but failed to come away with the points in the Country Basketball League north west competition. It was a case of double disappointment for the Tigers at the weekend, losing to Mildura Heat on Saturday night and again to the Castlemaine Cannons on Sunday. For Tigers coach Mick Ryan it’s a case of close, but not close enough. “Our record doesn’t show how hard we’re working or where we’re at,” he said. “The players have played their hearts out. “I can’t fault their efforts and they executed really well. It’s a shame that we couldn’t get some wins, but I’m really proud of everyone’s efforts.” It was heartbreak for the Tigers on Saturday night, losing to Mildura Heat 81-79. Ryan said a couple of lapses cost them dearly. “A few things didn’t go our way,” he said. “I didn’t think we scored the last few minutes. They hit some huge shots to tie it up and then go ahead.” Matt Quinn was a workhorse for the undermanned Tigers, scoring 25 points. Ryan said the side lost focus early on in their game against the Cannons the following day after their loss. “It took a toll and we started flat,” he said. “We have momentary lapses and had a few today. “We shot extremely well and fought back. “But once you’re behind and trying to come back it gets harder.” The Tigers lost 77-65. Louis Bongiovanni, Mark Colverd and Matthew Bourke scored 12 points each. Ryan said Bongiovanni took a big workload at the weekend as there was a lack of depth in the guard position due to players being away. He said Bourke was again powerful in defence and Carson McSweeney and Tom Scott had played well across both matches. “The main core 10 players were asked to do a lot of work on the weekend,” Ryan said. “Everyone who comes in and plays has an impact.” The Tigers sit sixth after eight matches, with one win. They face the Bendigo Braves on Saturday night, their second match-up in two weeks and will then be back for their last three matches in the new year. Ryan said they had not given up hope for finals as the competition is so close. “Every team is competitive and any team can beat each other,” he said. “We talked about having to be mentally

switched on the whole game. Against Bendigo we were with them until the last couple of minutes. “We’ll still have a few guys out, but fingers crossed we can improve on last week.”
The Tigers women’s side had a bye. They will also play Bendigo before the men’s side on Saturday night. Ryan said they hoped a big crowd would come out to see both sides play.

Sunbury a fine fit for new Jet Sunbury Jets US recruit Lynn Leaupepe is hoping time with the Big V state championship basketball side will help take her game to the next level. Leaupepe is the first Jets recruit announced for the next season as they look to assemble a side to take them to a fourth straight title. Leaupepe was in Australia trying out for the Melbourne Boomers’ Women’s National Basketball League team when she met Jets coach Kennedy Kereama. Kereama said Leaupepe, who comes fresh from college, was a tenacious defender and rebounder, athletically gifted and had an ability to create a shot off the dribble. Kereama said Leaupepe fell into the Jets’ lap after her Boomers training. “I offered her the opportunity to attend tryouts at Sunbury,” he said. “She turned up and proved to be a great fit for us, so bringing her on board was an easy decision.” Kereama said Leaupepe’s twin sister, Dynn, also attended tryouts and was “just as talented”. Leaupepe said she saw the Jets as a good opportunity. “After a few practices and playing with some of the girls that played on the team before, I kind of saw myself being able to play with them,” she said. “I plan on bringing my ability to drive and attack the basket hard out of transition and out of the offense and being a very effective and active rebounder. “Also, I wanted to play for a coach who could help develop me into a player that can be able to play at the next level in the WNBL.” Kereama said that while they had announced the signing of Leaupepe, the Jets’ squad for next season would be similar to the one that won this year’s championship. The Jets announced last week that Courtney Duever and Orla O’Reilly would be back next season. Duever, who won the league most valuable player award in 2017, returns after missing this year with a knee injury. O’Reilly was the grand final’s most valuable player and was named in the league’s all star team this year. Tara Murray

In profile, meaty wheel arches tie this frontal treatment in with a pleasing new rear, featuring sharper tailgate lines and refined new taillight layout. Tucson Go features 17-inch steel wheels with five-spoke wheel covers and a matching full-size spare wheel. Interior Inside, Tucson Go features a new floating tablet-style multimedia system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, bringing it in line with the whole Hyundai SUV range.
Safety The introduction of a SmartSense safety option pack on the entry-level Go and Active X models makes advanced safety accessible on every Tucson grade. The SmartSense pack, available in automatic models for $2200, brings forward collision avoidance assist, blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic collision warning, lane keeping assist and driver attention warning systems among the safety and convenience features.
