both science and our local communities and would be the worst outcome for the future of the Wombat Forest. “The local community fought and overcame unsustainable logging in the 1990s that has left the Wombat Forest in a highly degraded condition that must be rectified if the forest is to be resilient. It is incredible just how passionate and connected the people of central Victoria are to the Wombat Forest. It really is the People’s Forest.” But the Victorian National Parks Association supports the change in status, saying it would give the park the “protections, management and funding” it deserves. Director Matt Ruphel told Star Weekly recreational users would not be locked out. “State forests are generally put aside for extractive use and there’s no regulation or management of state forests other than for logging operations or large scale mining,” he said. “Changing to a national park excludes those very damaging activities.” “For everything else regarding recreational activities, camping, trail bike riding and four-wheel driving, the rules are exactly the same for state forests and national parks.”

Protesters turned out on horseback, in four-wheel drives and on foot to rally against Wombat State Forest becoming a national park. About 700 bush users and environmental group members brought Gisborne’s town centre to a halt last Saturday (November 10) to stand against a move by Victorian Environment Assessment Council (VEAC) they fear will restrict public access to the park. The VEAC has been ordered by the state government to investigate the future use and classifications of Wombat, Wellsford, Mount Cole and Pyrenees Ranges state forests. A VEAC draft report’s recommendations include changing the status of Wombat State Forest by establishing the Wombat-Lerderderg National Park. The report is open for public comment until December 10. Community members from the Wombat State Forest region including horse riders, prospectors, campers and “greenies” called on all state election candidates to declare their positions on the national park proposal, according to organisers. Rally organiser Tim Anderson, who has campaigned on Wombat State Forest issues since 1989, said “locking up” the forest would put an end to locals collecting firewood, dispersed camping, horse riding, dog walking and a range of other activities. “The Victorian Environmental Assessment Council’s proposal to make the Wombat Forest into a national park is the wrong direction for the Wombat Forest on environmental and social grounds,” Mr Anderson said. “The draft report is simplistic, rejects

Jackson Creek Park poll pledge By Jessica Micallef Sunbury residents will get a huge new park to enjoy if the Andrews Labor government is re-elected at this month’s state election. Located along Jackson Creek, the 1008-hectare park is included in a $150 million election pledge to create new parklands and walking and bike trails. The government claims the new Sunbury park will be more than 500 times the size of the MCG. Called Jackson Creek Park, it will be designed in consultation with Hume council.
The plan includes $10 million that will be spent to help councils upgrade under-utilised suburban spaces and local parks with new playgrounds, landscaping, toilets and picnic facilities. Premier Daniel Andrews told The Age the new parks would help residents spend quality time with loved ones. “It’s exactly what we need so families have a place that belongs to them, where they can share the company of friends and family at no cost,” Mr Andrews said. The $150 million investment will be spent over the next four years. It will also cover new parks in Werribee, Melton and Wyndham. Labor says its plan will “turn Victoria into the parks capital of Australia”.

The Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre has opened a new $4 million warm water swimming pool. The new 1.4-metre deep pool drop-in will offer session Attend a community aquatic programs, classes and treatments, on the future of Hanging Rock including exercise and rehabilitation. Hume councillor Geoff Porter said the pool would allow rehabilitation services to be provided locally. “This will make a huge difference to the day-to-day lives of people needing to use the warm water pool for rehabilitation,” Cr Porter said. “The new facility also creates an opportunity for local sporting clubs to use the pool for recovery sessions.” Cr Porter launched the pool with Sunbury MP Josh Bull. Police are appealing for public assistance following a number of thefts from a Sunbury pharmacy in September. The first incident occurred at an Evans Street pharmacy about 8.20am on September 18. The offender walked into the store and selected a number of items and then walked out without paying. The second incident occurred on September 28 about 12.30pm. On this occasion, according to police, it’s believed the same man entered the same store and concealed a number of items under his jacket and left the store without paying. He is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, tall with a skinny build and short dark hair. Police have released images of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries. Fire work spend for schools By Jessica Micallef Schools across the Macedon Ranges are set to benefit from much-needed maintenance work. More than 25 schools across the area will share in more than $218,000 as part of the state government’s $20 million of maintenance funding to help keep schools safe and fire-ready for the upcoming bushfire season. Darraweit Guim Primary School will also
receive $90,000 to repair termite-damaged flooring in the original school building. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the funding was good news for local schools ahead of the summer months. “This is welcome news for one of the Macedon Ranges’ smallest schools,” she said. “This $90,000 grant will provide a new floor for the 150-year-old school building. “We live in one of the most bushfire-prone

areas in the world, so it’s vital we take all precautions available to us to protect our community against the threat of fire.”
The schools, including kindergartens and childcare facilities, are those listed on the Department of Education and Training’s 2018 Bushfire At-Risk Register. Inclusion on the register means the facilities close on days declared Code Red in their Bureau of Meteorology districts. The Victorian School Building Authority will start working with the schools to determine the scope of their maintenance needs.
Dog coat on display A Gisborne fashion designer’s colourful creations will be on show at a major Hong Kong design event next month. Twenty-two year-old Megan Taylor’s handpainted ‘dog coat’ – inspired by Melbourne’s laneways and graffiti scenery – will be among 50 other Victorian designers showcasing their work at the Great Southern Style exhibition as part of the Hong Kong Business of Design Week. Ms Taylor said the chance to present her work was special. “It is really exciting to have an opportunity to participate and have my work seen in such a big market,” Ms Taylor said. After finishing her coursework at Kangan Institute, Ms Taylor put her hand up to make a brand new design after receiving an email. “I had finished my graduate collection and I had left over materials so I made a companion piece,” Ms Taylor said. Her hand painted dog coat was made from an upholstery frayed canvas to reflect a distressed look, with splashes of colour and spray paint, while keeping in mind the sustainable theme
of the exhibition. Ms Taylor said this was the first time her designs had been selected to feature in this event. She will be one of seven Kangan Institute fashion and millinery students whose work will be on display. Kangan Institute CEO Trevor Schwenke said he was proud of the students. “Well done to the talented students who were selected to represent Kangan Institute at the exhibition,” Mr Schwenke said. “We’re looking forward to this opportunity to join Victorian designers, design organisations and institutions in showcasing our state’s diversity and creativity, which includes emerging talents from Victorian TAFEs like Kangan Institute.” Jessica Micallef Megan Taylor will have her work shown at the at Hong Kong Business of Design Week. Cash pledge for Cross The state opposition will contribute $100,000 towards restoring the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross if elected later this month. The money will go towards repairing and restoring the urns, upgraded lighting, cleaning and graffiti removal. More than 3000 people attend the ANZAC Day Dawn Service each year at the cross. Mount Macedon Memorial Cross Reserve committee of Management chairman David Mann said he was delighted by the news. “It’s very much appreciated,” Mr Mann said. He said the funding would go towards maintenance work and will help with the master plans for the cross. “There’s an archway structure as you walk into the cross and I would like to turn it into a
welcome centre where visitors can discover the history of the cross,” Mr Mann said. Opposition spokesman for veterans Danny O’Brien said restoring the iconic landmark was important to maintain one of Victoria’s most significant war memorials. “We must continue to invest in Victoria’s historical landmarks, because once they are lost, they are lost forever,” Mr O’Brien said. Liberal candidate for Macedon Amanda Millar said refurbishing the cross was a long-time coming. “The historical Memorial Cross … hasn’t received a major restoration since 1955,” Ms Millar said. Art and vines ready to collide
The state government will spend $10 million to upgrade Gisborne Primary School. Maddison Architects have been appointed to design the new upgrades for the school, which will include the demolition of the current under-sized school gym, replacing it with extra classrooms and a new competition gymnasium. Principal Julie Soutter said the upgrade meant the school would be brought into the modern era.

Hanging Rock Winery is hosting the inaugural Art in the Vines sculpture exhibition. The event will give visitors a chance to discover 25 works of art, all handcrafted by leading local and international artists along the winery’s expansive lawns. Exhibition curator Malcolm Thomson said the display showcased work from world-renowned artists. “Sculptors who have their pieces on display at the likes of The Met Museum in New York, The National Gallery of Australia, The National Gallery of Victoria and many other prominent spaces around the world and Australia have signed up to participate,” Mr Thomson said. “Some of the sculptures are absolutely awe inspiring and we can’t wait to have them on display.” The exhibition will feature pieces from sculptors Andreas Busiman, Anton Hassell and Brigit Heller. Visitors will get the chance to meet the artists and take part in a painting workshop. Hanging Rock Winery’s general manager Ruth Ellis said the location was perfect to exhibit the sculptures. “Art in the Vines is such an exciting exhibition for our winery and the Macedon Ranges,” Ms Ellis said. Kyneton Cup comes to life By Jessica Micallef Thousands of racegoers were in full bloom for the 2018 Kyneton Cup last Wednesday. The 4000 strong crowd watched on as Another Coldie dominated in the 2000 metre race of the day. New Zealand horses Rhythm to Spare came in second and Our Big Mike finished third.
Unlike the Melbourne Cup, the rain held off for a perfect spring day in Kyneton. Events and operations manager at Kyneton Racing Club Lisa Evans said last week’s Cup was one for the ages. “It was a great race day and a great atmosphere … beautiful day in Kyneton,” Ms Evans said. The ladies took to the stage off track with bright spring colours on show at the
Watergardens Town Centre Fashions on the Field competition. Contestants competed in categories ranging from Lady of the Day all the way to the kids category. Jennifer Beachy was named as Macedon Ranges’ Lady of the Day. The Most Impressive Millinery award went to Bridget Aldridge and Michelle Robinson
reigned supreme as the overall Lady of the Day with a purple floral dress she made herself. Senior Constable at Kyneton Police Station Jamie Jordan said he was happy with the crowd’s behaviour. “There were no arrests made,” Mr Jordan said. “It was the most well behaved crowd so it was uneventful for us which is good.”

Water’s winning ways By Jessica Micallef Sunbury and Macedon Ranges pupils have made a splash in this year’s National Water Week poster competition. Drawing to the theme of ‘Water for me, Water for all,’ Macedon Primary pupils Sienna and Olive won first and second prize in the prep category. Three pupils from Gisborne Primary
School Lyla, Alana and Gracie all placed in the top three in the grade 1 and 2 category. Lyla’s winning poster was also awarded second place in the state for her category. Western Water’s general manager Graham Holt praised the pupils who participated in this year’s competition. “Congratulations to all the winners and runners-up whose posters showed a great
understanding of the theme,” Mr Holt said. “The standard of entries this year was very high and it’s great to see our primary students learning about the importance of water.” Entries were received from over 330 primary school pupils across the region. The winners were announced at a special event in Melton last month. All children received a participation certificate as appreciation for their efforts.

MY PLACE Beverly Winnell is big on good grammar and manners. The Sunbury resident chats with Jessica Micallef about her involvement in the Macedon Ranges Croquet Club. What is your connection to Sunbury/ Macedon Ranges? I live in Sunbury. How long have you lived in the area? I first moved to Sunbury in 1983 and apart from six months in 1996, I have been here ever since. What are you passionate about? My family, good manners and good grammar. Tell us about how you became involved at the Macedon Ranges Croquet Club? My friend, Margaret Woolcock, a work colleague, took me to a game. What does the club do for its members?
What other hats do you wear in the community? In the past I was involved in school tuckshop, reading, cooking classes at my children’s school, little athletics and dancing schools. But these days I am more into supporting my husband Ken, who is heavily involved in the community.

Freshen up the facade Stand outside the front door and look at it with fresh eyes. A neglected facade will make people feel like the home hasn’t been well maintained. • Clean front door and walls • Buy a fresh doormat • Add pot plants 3. Make an entrance Clear away all clutter that can pile up near the front door, and remove any furniture that’s too large for the space. 4. Declutter the entire home Think minimal: clear crowded shelving units, keeping only a few key pieces. Clearing all horizontal surfaces can transform a room’s look. 5. Remove personal items and family photos A primary objective should be to make interiors look beautiful, but impersonal, so people can imagine themselves living in the space.

By Tara Murray Riddell is facing its toughest challenge so far this season. It will need to bat well against St Anthonys to remain undefeated in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts competition. St Anthonys made 268 off 60 overs on the back of a century to Paul Scott and John Jensen’s 81. The Bombers took their time late on day one, facing nine overs before stumps and will resume at 0-12. Rupertswood also had a good day with the bat against East Sunbury, making 252. Alex Bond top scored with 55, while the lower order pair of John Lane (30 not out) and Max Howell (35) pushed the score well past 200. Jack Dillon was the pick of the bowlers for the Thunder with three wickets. Ashfield will need early wickets against Bacchus Marsh, after a tough day one. Ashfield was bowled out for just 127, with Jas King top scoring with 34. The Bulls will resume at 3-51. In other matches, Eynesbury Eagles made 175 against Gisborne. The Eagles got off to the perfect start with the ball, having the Dragons 1-3 at stumps. In the Jensen Shield, it was a day of high scores with Blackwood, Lancefield and Macedon posting scores of 200 plus. Kyneton was bowled out for 199. The star of the day in that competition was Macedon’s Chris Axton, who finished 120 not out against Sunbury United. Lancefield’s Jarryd McGill finished five short of his century against St Anthonys.
Little athletics
A bit of history was made earlier this month at the Sunbury Little Athletics Centre. Abbey McDonald broke the club record in the under-15 girl’s shot put. The record had been set in 1973. McDonald threw 9.58 metres to break the record by 10 centimetres. With help from Facebook, the club was able to track down the previous record holder, Kathleen Peppard, who know lives in America.

Lauren Close has been re-appointed coach of Riddell’s A-grade netball team for next year’s Riddell District Netball League season. Close coached the side last year and previously coached them to the 2015 premiership. The Bombers have also announced the signing of young defender Melinda Luke, who comes across from Gisborne.

Building blocks in place as Hawks look to the future Woodend-Hesket is hoping to continue the momentum of this year into next year’s Riddell District Netball League season. The Hawks had one of their best years in a number of seasons, including the under-19 side becoming the first senior Hawks side to make a grand final. Throw in their under-17s making a preliminary final and their under-15s winning a premiership last year and the future is bright for the Hawks. Hawks netball manager Kellie Duff said it was all about continuing what they had been doing. Duff said all the indications are that the majority of players are returning to the club next season, while several possible new players have expressed interest in joining. She said several under-17s would move into under-19s, while some under-19s would just play senior netball next year.
The Hawks will hold netball trials on November 20 and 22 for under-15s through to A-grade. Wendy Roberts will again coach the A and B grade sides, while Anne-Louise Lindner, who coached the under-19s, will coach the C-grade side. Duff will coach the under-19s. The A-grade side won four games last year, which was an improvement on recent years. Duff said there were signs that they were closing the gap with the top sides. “We played some really good experienced teams that were much older and we were competitive for a lot of the game. “The majority of our losses were under 20 goals. Three to four years ago, we were flogged by 60 to 70 goals. “There’s a lot of growth and development in this team. The average age of the A-grade side was 19.” Duff said she expected to see further

improvement next year, with many girls just focusing on playing A-grade instead of playing two games every Saturday. She said she expected them to flourish and be able to run out games better. “A few of our under-19 girls
will be aging out and will solely be playing in the senior ranks. “Many of these girls were playing two games on Saturday. We were in games until half time or three quarter time in A-grade before getting blown away. “Those girls had already played seven quarters. “The playing group is really excited about the future.” Several players were recognised individually. Sarah Duff won the senior RDNL rising star award and was runner-up in the under-17 league best and fairest award. Brittany Bowen finished runner-up in the under-19 best and fairest award. United batsmen falter By Tara Murray A poor batting performance has Sunbury United on the back foot against Diggers Rest Bulla in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup premier firsts. United has been one of the better batting teams in the one-day matches, but couldn’t recreate that form on Saturday. United lost two early wickets and was soon in trouble at 5-49. The wickets continued to fall and United was soon out for 93. Ryan Billinghurst top scored with 21. United coach Archie Dudderidge said with a slow outfield, the runs were worth a few more than what it showed on the scoreboard. “There weren’t too many boundaries hit. “Adam [Dudderidge] our captain, was looking good and got run out,” Dudderidge
said. “We couldn’t steady the ship after two early wickets.” Kevin Barker and Anushka Thanthiri took two wickets apiece for the Burras. United kept itself in the game, having the Burras in trouble at 4-34. The Burras were 4-45 at stumps. Raveen Yasas is unbeaten on 25 in his first game for the club. Dudderidge said had they taken a catch on the second last ball of the day, things would have been even closer at stumps. “It would have made things more interesting,” he said. “The game is still evenly poised, but it’s in their favour. “You never know. Last week Diggers Rest were 1-90 and then all out for 130. Hopefully they have another big collapse.” It was an emotional day for Gisborne in its match against Wallan. on Friday following a battle with stage four neuroendocrine small cell cancer. Clare would have been proud of the performance of the Dragons, as they claimed first innings points. Wallan was bowled out for 100, with Recordo Gordon taking 6-42. The Dragons finished day one at 6-124. Jakson Knight top scored with 45. Sunbury produced its best batting performance of the season against Romsey. Dylan Landt made 81 as Sunbury put on 242, bowled out in the third last over. Bacchus Marsh’s good form continued with another dominant performance with the bat, this time against Woodend. Bacchus Marsh made 9-375 from its overs, with Milinda Sepala making 183. It was a tough toil for the Woodend bowlers. Warren Else took 4-113 off 22 overs. Tom Robson took 3-83.
Kyneton Tigers are hoping a mid season break will give them a chance to regroup in the Country Basketball League north west competition. The Tigers have two weekends without games and enter the break, sitting 1-3-1. Coach Mick Ryan said he had mixed feelings on how the season had panned out so far. “I had expectations to try and be ahead of the ledger,” he said. “Realistically, we are a new team coming together and it’s going to take time to gel. “When we don’t have continuity at training it doesn’t help. I’m not over the moon about our form, but I’m realistic where we are at.” Ryan said they had shown glimpses of some really good basketball but had also let themselves down. He said if they played the way they did against Maryborough Blazers, which the Tigers won before the game was declared a draw due to a scoring issue, they would be very competitive in every game. Ryan said the back court of Louis Bongiovanni and Aidan Darmanin was playing well together and big man Matthew Quinn was having an impact at both ends of the court, when not affected by foul trouble. “All our starters have played heavy minutes,” Ryan said. “The top five or six guys have been great and there’s a few key guys on the bench. “The second unit is at every training session and working hard to push the starters. “I’ve told them they need to earn their minutes.” The Tigers have a tough period before the Christmas break. “We’ve dug a hole for ourselves,” Ryan said. “I still have aspirations to play finals. We have the rest of the season to set up and these matches [before Christmas] will determine where we finish.” He said they were also focused on making sure they were being competitive and earning respect in the competition. Settled Kangaroos begin to build for next season Sunbury Kangaroos have set a platform they hope will help them start life in the Essendon District Football League on the right note. The Kangaroos, who will play in division 2, are facing the unknown next season stepping into a different competition, but are putting in the hard work behind the scenes to make sure they are ready for the challenge. Kangaroos coach Anthony Leydin said they had put in a mountain of work the past few months to get them to a good point. “It’s certainly different to last season, I’m not sure I was even appointed at this time last year,” he said. “The amount of work we’ve done the last couple of months is two months more than this time last year. “It’s certainly given us a platform to work from.” Leydin said the most important thing for the club was re-signing this year’s playing group. He said of their senior players, only Matthew Wallace hadn’t re-signed for next
year. He’ll play with Pascoe Vale in Premier Division. Curtis Schultz and Josh Kanellos (three senior games each this year) have put in clearances to Airport West. Leydin said the players’ re-signing showed they supported the club’s decision to change leagues. “It’s a pretty bold decision by the club to go into another league, go into a lower division. That decision has been endorsed by pretty much everyone at the club, players included, as evident by the retention keeping everyone bar one. “We anticipated that one or two would have a change in lifestyle or work … things went our way.” Having signed this year’s playing group, it has allowed the club to go out and add more depth to the side. The club is expected to start announcing its new signings in the coming weeks. “We’ve got players who will hopefully come
back, be it senior and/or reserves players and we need every one of them,” Leydin said. “We’ve got a handful of signed agreements with players and we’re still in discussions with three or four more. We’re certainly expecting to pick up another three or four, but who they are remains to be seen.” As well as Leydin heading into his second season at the club, the Kangaroos have the same reserves and under-19s coaches. Leydin said he was looking forward to the challenge ahead. “I enjoyed [this year] despite only winning six games, I enjoyed my year more than any other year [coaching],” he said. “We will have lofty expectations, but are aware how big a challenge it is and we’re planning accordingly to hopefully push to having some success.”
Tigers ‘talls’ stand up By Tara Murray Kyneton Tigers were made to work for a win against the Shepparton Lady Gators in the Country Basketball League north-east women’s competition. The Tigers showed glimpses of good basketball but weren’t able to deliver it consistently throughout the game. Some hot shooting from Brooke Mangan got the Tigers over line, winning 63-52. Tigers coach Chris Tighe said it wasn’t the greatest game, but they were able to come up big when they needed to. “We got up early in the first quarter and then went away from it in the middle section,” he said. “We went away from what we were doing well. “Brooke Mangan shot the lights out, hitting three three-pointers in the final quarter and Rachelle [Mangan] hit a three as well.” Tighe said the Gators made them deviate from their game plan but they were able to show other elements of their game when they needed to. “They [Gators] parked themselves inside to keep the ball away from the bigs,” he said. “I assume that was what their game plan was, to stop our bigs and we didn’t adjust until the last quarter. “We don’t shoot often [from outside the arc], we normally attack the ring. “When we shoot from that distance we aren’t a bad side. It’s good to keep sides on their feet.” Tighe said while they weren’t completely on song in attack, they had a strong defensive game and were able to restrict the Gators. He said one area that did hurt them was free throw shooting and it would be something they would work on during the week. With the pressure on the bigs, in the inside it was the talls who were the standouts, according to Tighe. He said Rebecca Van Kuyk, Molly Greetham and Michelle Fletcher all did great jobs. Rebecca Van Kuyk led the scorers with 21 points, while Brooke Mangan scored with 17 points. The win is the Tigers fourth in a row and only the Bendigo Braves and Wodonga Lady Wolves [who have played three less games], sit above them on the ladder. Tighe said he was happy with the season so far and results had shown it was a close competition. This week the Tigers face Myrtleford Saints on Saturday night. “Myrtleford is an unknown,” Tighe said. “Bendigo in two weeks will be the test. They are a really drilled team that can adjust well. They play together at Big V and VJBL [Victorian Junior Basketball League]. “The goal is to beat Bendigo twice during the season and then in the finals if we face them. “They’ll be a good test to see where we are at.”

Bombers go with co-coaches Riddell will have co-coaches for next year’s Riddell District Football League season. The Bombers recently announced that Justin Belleville would step up and join Jamie Elliott in the senior coaching role. Elliott has coached the side by himself for the past three seasons, which has included taking the side to two grand finals. Belleville, who coached the Bombers under-19 team this year, said he and Elliott spoke about coaching together and thought it was the best move heading forward for the club. “I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “It’s a good young group and it’s the best thing for the club. We’ve got a few young kids who will step up into the side and a few new recruits as well. “We’ve got some good assistant coaches behind us too.” Belleville said he was always interested in coaching after he had hung up the boots. He had a successful playing career at the Sunbury Lions, before moving across to Riddell and played in the Bombers’ 2005 and 2006 premierships. Belleville said after falling short in the grand final for the second time in three years to Diggers Rest, there was one area he thought they needed to improve. “We need to get a bit fitter,” he said. “The game style will be tweaked a bit as well. I don’t think there will be a drop off.” The Bombers have also announced the first of their recruits for next season. Riley Paterson comes across from Gisborne, while Ethan Foreman returns to the Bombers after playing with Kyneton. Foreman kicked 58 goals this year in the Bendigo Football League, finishing fourth in the league’s goalkicking. Belleville said Foreman would give them an another option in the forward line, which already contains the RDFL’s leading goalkicker from this year, Haydn Ross. He said more recruits would be announced in the coming weeks. On the other side, the Bombers have lost a couple of players to retirement and a couple returning back to their former club. Peter Robertson and Brayden Allen aren’t expected to play on, while Scott and Tim Walsh are going back to Gisborne after three years at the Bombers.

Kia’s Rio gets a major revamp By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Kia Rio competes in one of the most hard-fought sales segments in Australia so it made sense to give a full-on revamp with major mechanical changes to give it more weapons to fight with. The entry level Rio S is unchanged, with a 1.4-litre petrol engine mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Much bigger news is that the Rio Si and SLi models have been replaced by a new Kia Rio Sport. It has 17-inch alloy wheels and, importantly, a six-speed automatic that replaces the four-speed. It has cruise control, leather trim on the steering wheel and gear lever, as well as powered folding door mirrors. At the top of the range, the Rio GT-Line has a sporty 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol with 88kW of power and 172Nm of torque. It now drives the front wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. GT-Line features a body kit and a full-on range of LED lights: daytime running lights, position lamps, foglights and rear lights. Infotainment uses a six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth as well as Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility. Safety is increasingly important to buyers in this class as many are youngsters and their parents are concerned about them. Standard features on all include ABS, ESC, VSM, reverse parking sensors, rearview camera and six airbags. The GT-Line adds AEB and Lane Keep Assist to the passive safety features. Kia’s 7-Year Warranty, 7-Year Capped Price Servicing and 7-Year Roadside Assist is a major plus for the Rio, indeed for all vehicles in the South Korean range. Pricing starts at $16,990 RRP for the manual and $17,490 drive away for the automatic.
