Mining plan rocks ranges By Esther Lauaki A proposal for mining exploration in Lancefield and Romsey has residents questioning state government protections over the Macedon Ranges. Macedon Ranges Resources, a new Perth-based company, has lodged a licence application for low impact field exploration for base metals including copper, zinc, lead and gold. The application, submitted to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning in September, was advertised this month and residents can have their say until October 24. If the company gets the green light, it
proposes to start rock chip sampling and analysis, geological mapping and research in the next two years. Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said it was the third application for mining explorations this year. “The state government adopted its Helping Victoria Grow – Extractive Resources Strategy in June, which aims to give priority to extractive industries through regulatory changes, and planning system changes,” Ms Pruneau said. “The strategy identifies extractive industry interest areas in Macedon Ranges around Clarkefield. “However the Macedon Ranges has recently

been declared a distinctive area in Victoria protecting it from development. “We wanted certainty of the protection of the ranges and it’s disconcerting that messages coming through are confusing. “It leaves us up in the air.” The area slated for exploration stretches from Mount William to the outskirts of Lancefield, the eastern half of Romsey to Chintin and out to the Macedon Ranges boundary with Mitchell shire. Macedon Ranges Resources director Steven Standings said that if a target was discovered in the area, exploration and drilling at selected locations could continue for up to five years. “The outcome of this work will inform the

Racecourse revamps a winner By Esther Lauaki Kyneton and Hanging Rock racecourses have been revamped in a boon for racegoers, the industry and horses. The Kyneton course has been equipped with 110 new and refurbished tie-up stalls, walkways, fences and buildings – all designed to improve the safety and welfare of spectators, jockeys and horses. The refurbishment of both racecourses was made possible by a $978,000 joint funding package with contributions from the state government, Macedon Ranges council and the club.
Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club manager Jon Dight said that part of the funding would be used to ring in the new year at the annual Family Day at the Hanging Rock event on January 1. “We would like to thank the Victorian government for its investment in these major improvements to our two racecourses, and for their support for our New Year’s Family Day,” Mr Dight said. “Hanging Rock is a picturesque racecourse at the foot of one of Victoria’s most iconic natural attractions, and we’re thrilled to provide a day of family entertainment for locals and visitors.” Macedon Ranges MP Mary-Anne Thomas
toured the refurbished Kyneton grounds last week. “Country racing makes a vital contribution to our economy and employment, that’s why we’re investing in these upgrades and improving the race day experience at both racecourses,” she said. At the Hanging Rock Racecourse, the jockeys’ room, administration buildings and public toilets have been renovated and modernised, while the public bar has been extended. New public walkways aim to improve safety by minimising the interaction of horses and racegoers and a new drainage system will harvest storm water for track irrigation.

Macedon Ranges and Diggers Rest families will benefit from a funding boost for early learning centres. Woodend Kindergarten will receive $152,000 on top of its recently successful bid for $200,000 to upgrade its outdoor playspace through the Pick My Project initiative. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas visited the kindergarten last week for the announcement. “Now some of our littlest residents will have the outdoor learning spaces they deserve at Woodend kinder,” Ms Thomas said.
Sport and recreation at Lancefield Park will be kicking more goals than ever thanks to upgrades valued at $1.25 million. A long list of improvements at the recreation reserve, funded by the state government and sport clubs, include upgrades to the cricket, bowls, tennis and football facilities. New toilets, carpets, kitchen facilities and airconditioning have been installed at the cricket club. The bowls club has received a new outdoor barbecue area and security fencing. The old asphalt tennis courts have been resurfaced and converted into multi-use plexipave netball and tennis courts. Lighting around the courts is still to be installed, with the state opposition pledging $250,000 towards work earlier this year. Other Lancefield projects to receive recent boosts, as part of the government’s Lancefield community recovery package that followed the Lancefield-Cobaw fires, include $150,000 to upgrade the toilets at the Lancefield Mechanics Institute and $100,000 allocated for the Benloch fire station meeting room. Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D ’Ambrosio said investing in Lancefield was important. “It isn’t just about investing in capital infrastructure – it’s about investing in people and bringing the community together,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

Bulla asbestos plan ‘premature’ By Esther Lauaki A proposal to truck 15,000 cubic metres of hazardous waste across Melbourne to Bulla for disposal is the “worst scenario”, according to the Asbestos Council of Victoria. Sunbury residents raised concerns earlier this month about a proposal to dump material at the Bulla tip, run by Hi-Quality Group, from the former Morwell power station. An application by the former station’s liquidators, Energy Brix Australia Corporation, to bury asbestos on its own land was rejected by Latrobe council in May because the site was
135 metres from offices and 600 metres from houses. Energy Brix remediation general manager Barry Dungey told Star Weekly that Bulla was only one of the sites being considered. But Hi-Quality Group divisional manager Lance Ingrams said that the organisation was not in talks with anyone about accepting waste from the old power station. “We have not received any approaches from the Victorian government or from Energy Brix, to accept waste material from the old Morwell power station, whether asbestos waste or any other waste,” Mr Ingrams said.
“If any request is made, then we will consider it,” he said. The Hi-Quality Group operation, which is licensed to accept asbestos, is separate to the now closed BTQ operated landfill site – both on Sunbury Road. The facility is licensed to accept asbestos waste, complying with relevant guidelines and legislation. It accepted waste during the Black Saturday bushfires. Asbestos Council of Victoria chief executive Vicki Hamilton is opposed to the proposal to truck asbestos across the state, saying it was the “worst scenario”.
“I just can’t get my head around thinking that’s a better option than keeping it on site,” Ms Hamilton said. Hume mayor Geoff Porter said the discussions were premature and made “no sense”. “These issues need to be resolved, and the appropriate permits for handling, transporting and disposing of asbestos must be met,” Cr Porter said. “As such, any conjecture that the Latrobe Valley’s demolition waste is coming to a privately owned Bulla facility is premature.”
This year’s supermodels Preparations are full steam ahead for Sunbury Model Train Club’s annual exhibition this weekend. The two-day event is in its 35th year at St Anne’s and will include dozens of layouts of different scales by modellers from across the state. Exhibition manager Ryan Chester said the event aims to showcase the work of the club’s 50 members, as well as to inspire the community to come aboard. “Our latest models will all be on show and there will be trade stands, demonstrations and entertainment for everyone,” Mr Chester said. He will be demonstrating how to build model locomotives at his stall and there will be a small Thomas the Tank Engine layout for the youngsters. “We’re all keen modellers and our skill base is varied with people specialising in a number

Macedon council is treating elm trees in local streets, parks and reserves in Kyneton and Lancefield for elm leaf beetles. The annual control program treats about 850 trees, aiming to protect them from the pest, which feeds on the leaves of elm trees and defoliates mature trees. A big shindig is planned for Killara Primary School’s 25th anniversary. The school will hold a fete to mark the milestone on Friday, October 26, with food, plants, jewellery, crafts and competitions. Killara Primary School opened in 1993 in what was a rapidly expanding area of housing estates on the north-west fringe of Sunbury. The school’s roll has expanded from 103 pupils to about 600. Supervising teacher Robyn Smith said there would be plenty to see and enjoy at the fete. “There will be everything, from all kinds of stalls, a jumping castle, rock climbing wall,
photo booth, dunking tank and a meltdown challenge to community group displays,” Ms Smith said. “Guided walks on the hour will showcase our school’s biodiversity. “This is an opportunity to celebrate the school and its history.” Wristbands for activities will be available for pre-purchase through the school office until Wednesday, October 24, for $15. Calder overpass back on agenda By Esther Lauaki Road safety campaigners are renewing calls for an overpass at one of the Calder Freeway’s most notorious intersections. Calder Action Group campaigner Russell Mowatt, a New Gisborne resident, is urging the state government to push on with plans for an interchange at Calder Park Drive. The group launched an online petition last week because it believes the government has “gone quiet” on the issue. “A business case for this project, including design detail, environmental approvals and acquisition overlays has been with the minister for over 12 months, but no priority has been publicly allocated nor any construction funding approved,” he said. Mr Mowatt said he spoke from experience, having been involved in a serious crash on Calder Park Drive with his daughter about a decade ago. “I drive down the Calder Freeway at this location on a regular basis and have the same issues as other residents with the reduced 80-kilometre [speed limit], vehicles lined up during peak period on the Calder Freeway shoulder, turning right, and accidents still happening at the Organ Pipes Road U-turn intersection,” he said. “As the safety risk remains, and local and regional population growth continues … this intersection will become a serious community safety hazard and economic penalty.” He said that the Calder Action Group would continue to press the state government to move on the construction of the overpass “at the earliest possible date”. Tradies who have successfully completed their apprenticeships in the past five years could soon be able to apply for Trade Papers. Trade Papers, a separate certificate in recognition of apprenticeships, were scrapped last year and apprentices currently only receive a VET qualification upon completion of their courses. But Skills and Training Minister Gayle Tierney made an election pledge last week to have them reintroduced next year. “Whether it’s bringing back Trade Papers, making TAFE courses free or transforming campuses, we’re rebuilding TAFE after years of devastating cuts,” Ms Tierney said on a visit to Kyneton last week. She said that the investment would include $43.8 million to reintroduce Trade Papers, implement new independent assessments, update learning materials to help create quality apprenticeships and traineeships. Stars galore on show in Sunbury By Esther Lauaki Pretty ponies, scream-inducing rides and shiny Thunderbirds were high on the hit parade at Saturday’s Sunbury Agricultural Show. It was the 98th anniversary of the grand annual show. More than 1300 entries were received for the arts and crafts section. Sunbury’s Fiona Warncke, her 22-year-old daughter, Rachael, and her mother, Marlene Benz, battled it out for the top prize in crochet. Ms Benz picked up the overall arts and crafts grand prize, while Ms Warncke won the crochet event and Rachel took home minor prizes. Event secretary Sandy Baun said the show attracted the most people since 2014, with about 13,000 visitors flooding through the gates at Sunbury Recreation Reserve. “It was a huge success,” Ms Baun said. “There were lots of horses and I think the camel rides were one our most popular rides. “The pavilion was brilliant as always, with ladies from Gisborne demonstrating spinning and weaving in the crafts section. “Always very popular was Chris Humfrey with the Wild Action zoo.” A local junior ambassador, Amber Karris, was chosen to represent Sunbury at an upcoming regional show. Ms Baun thanked all the volunteers and sponsors who contributed to the event.

Sunbury road link gains funding By Esther Lauaki Sunbury’s Yirrangan Road will be extended in a bid to improve traffic flows. Development Victoria last week committed to building the first section of the road, which will link Sunbury South and Jacksons Hill to Vineyard Road. The government has also allocated Hume council $3.5 million to manage further extensions of the road.
Sunbury MP Josh Bull said the road link south from Jacksons Hill had been long promised and was much needed. “Initially, it will connect to Buckland Way, but with the proposed Sunbury South Ring Road being delivered as part of the Precinct Structure Plan, [it] will ultimately connect to both Vineyard Road, close to the proposed Sunbury South station, as well as Sunbury Road on Redstone Hill,” Mr Bull said. “Residents will have more options to access

But he said the best solution for easing traffic flows would be a third railway crossing in Sunbury.

Mr Daniher – who has been the face of the Fight MND campaign for the past three years – launched the fourth Daniher’s Drive on Thursday from Government House with his first stop at Woodend. Almost 400 participants in about 100 cars took part in this year’s fundraising car rally which stopped at the Macedon Ranges, Stawell, Daylesford and Horsham before heading to South Australia and back by Sunday. The total raised by Daniher’s Drive is $4.6 million in the past three years. Daniher said this year’s target was $2.5 million. “I’ve been overwhelmed with the support of the community,” he said. “I think they get it – people are dying. “With motor neurone disease it’s really a death sentence and it’s simple – we need funding to help our researchers find a treatment.
“And we will find it, never quick enough for me, but we’ve got tremendous support.” Premier Daniel Andrews pledged $400,000 to the cause last Thursday on behalf of Victorians. “He is a great inspiration to every single Victorian,” Mr Andrews said. “No one would have held it against Neale Daniher if, when he got his diagnosis, he decided to spend this last part of his life with family and friends doing things that were all about him. “But instead he has turned over these precious weeks, months and years to raising money and raising awareness.” Esther Lauaki

What’s your connection to Sunbury? I’ve always worked in the area. I’m now practising audiology in Sunbury. What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about helping people in my community. You run a new audiology clinic in Sunbury. Tell us about how you became an audiologist. I got into audiology because I’m a people person and I wanted to work alongside people. You get to do all aspects of hearing healthcare and the follow up care as an audiologist. I perform hearing checks, fit people with hearing aids … I’m a jack of all trades and it’s good to be involved in all aspects of the field. How important is it for us to get regular hearing checks? I think there are a lot of misconceptions out there about protecting ears against hearing loss. At the moment, it takes most Australians seven to 10 years to acknowledge they have hearing loss before they do anything about it – if they do anything at all. I have personally seen so many cases where hearing loss affects a
person’s confidence and independence. People become embarrassed at having difficulty joining in on conversations, so they back away from social engagements and start to become isolated. It’s about educating people about hearing and teaching them how to preserve it. What other hats do you wear in the community? I sponsor Sunbury Bowls Club. The club has a
big presence in the community and I want to be a part of that. What’s something people don’t know about you? I played multiple instruments as a child and that’s likely how I became interested in hearing, because I love to listen to music and I can’t imagine not being able to hear those instruments.
What do you love about Sunbury? The people and I love that it’s not that far from the city. What do you think could be improved? There are some audiologists in the area, [but] no one offers just specialised audiology services. I’m glad that I can be here for people in that way. There is a need for it in this community.

A crush on Croatia Stephen Linnell explores the Dalmatian Coast.
We have been wowed before. Rome’s Colosseum, France’s spectacular Palace of Versailles, the canals and narrow streets of Venice. So how would a seven day luxury cruise through Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast stack up? The stunning islands dotted with mystery and filled with history instantly seduced us. Centuries-old fortresses and battlements provided a dramatic backdrop to each island.
Our adventure started in Split, where the Palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian (built around the fourth century AD) looms large and consumes almost half the city. A wondrous start to our journey. From there, we boarded our Sail Croatia Elegance cruise ship, the Diamond. Initial concern that we had booked a 20-something party boat thankfully proved baseless. The vessel itself had a capacity for just 40
guests, with 19 cabins – just 24 people were on our cruise, mostly Australian. Our cabin was above deck, with plenty of room to move and a large ensuite. Our first overnight stop was the waterside village of Milna on the island of Brac, famous for providing the limestone used to build the White House in Washington. Second stop was the port city of Hvar, where we first explored the largest piazza in the
Adriatic before making the steep climb to the hilltop fortress, which offers extraordinary views of the old town and port, filled with multi-million dollar private yachts. The general routine throughout the week was cruise in the morning, before mooring in a cove for a morning swim. The waters around Croatia are crystal clear – and salty, but offered some great views for snorkelling.

We would then have a three course lunch aboard ship (every day it was superb) before docking at an island – allowing us to explore by foot, bicycle or vehicle. Day three we arrived at Vis, the outer most island. It has a remarkable military history dating back to the Venetians. We took a four-hour must-do military history tour of the island, which included astonishing stories of bravery from Allied pilots who used the island for emergency landings during World War II. The island fell into then-Yugoslavia’s hands after the war, and was essentially a closed military base until the late 1980s, when it was finally opened up to the public. We went underground and explored an amazing tunnel network used to supply the major gun installations that covered the four points of the island, before entering a now disused submarine base carved into a mountain – created by former President Tito and used during the Cold War. The tour continued with a must-stop visit to the famous Blue Cave, (or Blue Grotto) on the island of Bisevo, before taking us to the port of Vela Luka, then Korcula, a grand medieval town and the so-called birthplace of Marco Polo (he at least lived there for a period of time). This port was certainly one of the best. After a day exploring Mljet, famous for its National Park and two salt lakes, we finally arrived at our final destination, Croatia’s piece de resistance, Dubrovnik. A walk around the giant walled fortress is a must, as well as shopping in the old town.

Whether selling or not, Spring is a great time to start on those outside jobs that we tend to put of off through the winter months. Gutters fill with leaves and debris over Winter, clean them out. After Spring comes Summer Winter and gutters filled with debris are a fire hazard. A freshly painted front fence and letterbox gives a bright new look to a property as does new mulch on the garden. Everything grows joyously in Spring including the weeds. “A weed a day” helps to keep the garden under control and will help to stop the garden being over-run over and of course the lawn mower will have a very serious work out in Spring. Justin Evans and Jay Reardon took four wickets each for the Tigers. In other games, Lancefield got its first win of the season defeating Macedon, Malmsbury snuck home against Blackwood and Rupertswood beat St Anthonys.

Sunbury faced a tough day against Fitzroy-Victoria in Bowls Victoria Pennant, division 1, section 1. Fitzroy-Victoria made the most of playing at home, winning 88 (14)-72 (4). For Sunbury, Carla Krizanic’s rink took on a rink with two former Sunbury club champions and was the big winner for the second straight week, winning 24-15. Mark Cowan’s rink won 21-20, after a one shot loss the week before. Dylan Filuk’s rink lost 28-12, while Todd Trewarne’s rink lost 25-15. Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was always tough to win at Fitzroy-Victoria. “To come away with four points at their synthetic green is a good achievement,� he said. “It’s always pretty hard to beat them, so to pick up four points on the road early in the season is good.� Three of Sunbury’s six teams won at the weekend, including both division 3 sides. Sunbury’s midweek ladies Premier League side also had a win, defeating Altona 59 (13)-48 (3). Meanwhile, in the opening round of the Central Highlands Bowls Division, Kyneton Golf won the division 1 grand final rematch against Gisborne Red. While Golf won only one rink, it proved to be enough to take the day 96 (12)-86 (6). The winning rink, skipped by Stephen Taylor, won 31-11. Bacchus Marsh got off to an ideal start with a high scoring win against Gisborne Yellow, 106 (16)-82 (2). Romsey defeated Trentham 93 (14)-84 (4) and Lancefield won the closest match of the round against Kyneton, 98 (14)-92 (4).

‘Student of the game’ takes on women’s coaching role New Sunbury Kangaroos coach Bevan Green is hoping to take the side to the next level in the Essendon District Football League Women’s competition. The Kangaroos have shown plenty of positives in their first two seasons, including finishing third this year, with only losses to the grand finalists. Green, who takes over from Allan Walters, admits taking on the coaching role is a big stepping stone, but said he is looking forward to the challenge. “I’m an untried coach … I’m excited about the challenge,” he said. “I’ve always been a player, but I never loved playing. I’m a student of the game and love watching it.
“I’m looking forward to being on the other side.” Green isn’t new to the Kangaroos, his wife Danni Green was playing-coach in the team’s first season and co-captain this year. Green said having watched the side the past couple of seasons, he knew what they were capable of. He said it’s now about taking the next step. “A lot of the girls have learned to play [the basics of] footy, but they don’t really know how to play,” he said. “I think they are ready to take the next step. It’s not a token thing any more, there’s avenues for careers. It’s more serious now. “They finished third this year and a couple
of games they lost, the opposition wasn’t necessarily a better side, but a better organised side. “That’s some of the stuff the girls have to learn.” Green said the side drew its strength from the friendships on and off the field, which he said was rare in football. One of Green’s aims this season is to get some of the players up to a level to possibly play VFLW or even AFLW. “I can name a dozen girls in that team, if they took it seriously and had the right people behind them, who could make the move,” he said. “It’s one of my goals. While I don’t want to
lose them, I want them to move forward to play at higher levels. “It’s a good thing for them.” The Kangaroos are set to be boosted by a few youth girls players stepping up this season, adding some extra depth. Green said anyone interested in playing was more than welcome. The Kangaroos women’s side kicks off pre-season training on October 31 and will run on Wednesday nights before Christmas. Still plenty to roar about By Tara Murray Sunbury let slip the opportunity to claim an early scalp in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts competition. Facing reigning premiers Bacchus Marsh, the Roar took it up to the Bulls and had their chances, but in the end experience proved the difference and the Bulls won. The Bulls made 156 before the Roar were bowled out for 129. “We let one get away,” Roar captain-coach Brad Hunter said. “The difference was the fielding and discipline in bowling extras. That was the only difference in the whole game. “We had 12 extras and that’s 12 more balls and they win by 27. We should have got the runs and beaten them.” Stephen Treweek had a solid all-round game, taking four wickets and making 23 runs. Heath Boffey top scored for the Roar with 25 and also chipped in with three wickets. Despite starting the season with two losses, Hunter said they were not concerned. He said they were yet to field their strongest team and they would be better suited to the two-day format. “While it’s been a tough start to the season, it’s where we wanted to be. “We wanted to blood the young kids. We’ve got three blokes over 30, but the rest are still really young. “We’ve put some of the older blokes back in the seconds and getting the younger ones in the firsts.” Stephen and Lachlan Treweek and Dylan Landt are three of the younger players in Roar’s side. And 17-year-old Mitchell Johnston, who has taken six wickets in the first two rounds, is pushing for a spot in the top side. Hunter said that Johnston would likely come in at his expense. “I haven’t taken a wicket, so there’s a fair chance I’m getting dropped,” Hunter said. “Mitch is 17 and I’m 40-odd. It’s where we want to be with the youth and next generation. “The younger blokes are more than capable of playing in McIntyre, we want them dominating in McIntyre in the coming years.” Hunter said they would likely be close to their strongest side this season, with Craig Ballinger available in an added bonus. In other results, Woodend responded to a poor round one batting performance with a dominant display against Sunbury United. United made 4-227 off its overs with Adam Dudderidge scoring 91. Woodend made 0-228 in reply, with seven overs remaining. Josh Eastley was 142 not out, Michael Nalesnyik was 81 not out. Gisborne beat Romsey, while Diggers Rest Bulla was too good for Wallan.

Gisborne now two for two Gisborne is a team in a hurry in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts competition. The Dragons have wasted little time in their opening two matches, chasing down low targets. After restricting Woodend to 84 in the opening round, before chasing it down with the loss of no wickets, the Dragons were in a similar mode on Saturday against Romsey. The Dragons bowled Romsey out for 93, with Damien Devlin (30) the only batsman to pass 16. Dragons’ import Recordo Gordon tore through the top order, taking 4-17 and being involved in a run out. Jay King took 2-9. The Dragons needed just 16.2 overs to get the job done with the bat, finishing 2-96. Jakson Knight got a second successive 50, making 60 before going out with the win in sight. Jason Wilson finished 28 not out. Darin Jewell and Matthew Hoyt took the wickets for Romsey. The Dragons are one of two teams undefeated after two rounds, the other team is reigning premier Bacchus Marsh. The Dragons sit on top of the ladder with a better percentage. Romsey is sitting fourth, one of four teams to have a 1-1 record. Romsey this week hosts Woodend, while Gisborne plays Diggers Rest Bulla. Tigers apply lessons learned from debut season

Kyneton Tigers had a mixed start to the Country Basketball League men’s north-west season. The Tigers split their opening two matches, losing to Mildura Heat 83-61 on Saturday night, before a big win on Sunday against the Swan Hill Flyers. It was a much better performance from the Tigers on Sunday, as they beat the Flyers 82-44. Aidan Darmanin top scored with 21 points, as four players scored double figures. New coach Michael Ryan is excited by what he sees. Ryan was part of the playing group last season, but having retired, is looking forward to taking on the coaching reins. “I’ve done bits and pieces of coaching the last five to six years,” he said.
“This is my first season coaching adults at any level. “Ash Clarke asked me to take on the role. It’s a good way to stay involved in the program. “There’s a lot of local young talent with a lot of upside in them and I love coaching and want to do it as much as possible.” Ryan said this season’s squad has a bit more depth than last season’s team which won just three games in its first season. He said all their starters have Big V experience which will be important. “Matt Quinn will be our starting centre,” Ryan said. “Aidan [Darmanin] will be our point guard, while Louie [Bongiovanni] will be our shooting guard. We expect big things from our back court.
Rupo clips Eagles’ wings By Tara Murray Rupertswood made it two from two in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s Johnstone Shield District Firsts competition. Having dropped down a grade in the off season after losing a number of players from their top two sides, Rupo was unsure how they would go this season. If early signs are anything to go by, they are on the right track. Rupo captain-coach Andrew Pizaro said dropping down a grade was the right decision for the club’s long term future. He said he was happy with how they had performed so far. “I’m ecstatic,” he said. “With the group that we have on the field at the moment, it’s a really young group, a really new group. “Dropping down a grade obviously meant we weren’t sure what we were playing against going into the season. “Most expectations go out the window. You want to get the most out of what you have and go from there. “We’re not worried about playing finals at this stage, just about the process.” Rupo made it two wins from as many games, with a strong performance against Eynesbury Eagles on Saturday. The Eagles started well, before Rupo halted the flow and restricted them to 7-182. Pizaro said he was happy with that total, which was a lot better than it could have been. “They were 0-110,” he said. “I didn’t know about what the rest of their batting was like and was only going on what I had seen the week before. “Their batsmen past three didn’t perform and were under the pump. “We thought it we could get one or both of those top guys we would be back on track. “They were 133 off 20 overs and ended up 182 off 40 overs, scoring only 50 runs off the last 20 overs.” Paul McGarry took three wickets. Pizaro was full of praise for first-gamer Max Howell and second-gamer Alex Bond. He said the two 17-year-olds got them back into the game, as did veteran John Lane. With the bat, Jordan Curran put on a show, making 95. The knock included eight fours and eight sixes. Pizaro said that sort of performance didn’t surprise him. “He is a big hitter of the ball and can hit the ball hard from pretty much wherever he wants. “He has brought the ability to keep out the good ball and not allow himself to get under the pump for long. “He’s becoming more and more a good all-round batsman.” Curran’s knock, along with Bert Van Den Heuvel, 47 not out, guided Rupo to 3-185. They made the runs with still 17 overs to go. Pizaro said they had worked on their

batting over the pre-season. “Most of the things we have concentrated on in the pre-season are showing right away, which is a bonus,” he said. “We’ve focused on a few different ways
with our batting and I hope it continues.” Rupo is one of three teams undefeated after two rounds. Other winners at the weekend were Ashfield, Riddell and St Anthonys.
“Tom Scott, who plays for Altona Gators, is another local, while Carson McSweeney adds a bit of depth. “Matt Bourke also has Big V experience. It’s a solid six players with experience.” Ryan said he expected those guys to help mentor some of the younger players. He said the likes of Ethan Clark, Hayden Boyer and Brendan McCarthy are players to watch in the future. Looking ahead, Ryan said the team will be stronger than in its debut season. “The returning players have more maturity physically and basketball-wise.” The women’s side started their season with a 61-49 loss to the Lady Flyers. Gisborne is ready to peak New Gisborne women’s coach Jason Peak said his role is the perfect way to stay involved with female football. Peak, a Gisborne local, was last week announced as the Bulldogs’ new coach, replacing Anthony Carrigg and Lisa Borg. “I’m excited by the challenge,” Peak said. “I was at the Calder Cannons [girls] two years ago and I was looking to get back involved with coaching. “I wanted to stay involved in the women’s side and was looking somewhere local … Gisborne was advertising.” Peak said because he was a Gisborne local he had had an interest in the club as a coach, parent and spectator for a number of years. He has previously coached juniors at the Bulldogs, with several players part of the Bulldogs under-18 boys premiership side this year. One of his daughters is a trainer at the club and the other plays netball at the club. Peak said he had watched a few of the Bulldogs’ women’s games this year and was impressed with what he saw. “I’m familiar with who the players are and I’ve already taken some notes, having watched them. “It’s a good way to be involved. I had a go at the higher level and enjoyed it, but it left a sour taste. “I’ll help out and have some fun, hopefully win a few games and maybe have some success.” The Bulldogs finished third in the AFL Goldfields competition this year, knocked out in the preliminary final. Peak said there are a lot of positives from this season which saw the team make massive inroads. He said the number of players coming through the youth girls sides was a bonus for the club. “The most exciting thing is the amount of youth to come through to the team in the next 12, 24 and 36 months,” he said. “For me it’s not a 12 month plan, I want to be there for an extended period of time. “Hopefully we can attract some players who want to play under a reasonable coach who want to enjoy their football with a good group and footy club.” Peak said they were still to set a date for pre-season to start. Powertrains
The Cooper S has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit that produces 141 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque. Transmission options are a six-speed manual gearbox or a sports-tuned seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with paddle shifters. The JCW’s dual-clutch includes launch control to minimise standing-start times.
Driving
Steering and handling let you use a combination of the throttle and steering wheel that’s all-but intuitive. The brakes hauled off speed with ease and never showed the slightest sign of fade. Engine lag is minimal and once it’s passed there’s strong torque that makes light work of hills. If you engage the Sport mode for added fun, you get better performance and a much-improved exhaust note. The automatic transmission is almost
always in the correct gear, though habit had us probably using the paddle shifters more than required. Having said that, there’s no way I would buy a Mini of any sort with an automatic. Ride comfort is generally good, but some hard bumps and dips did find their way into the interior. Fuel consumption isn’t something that’s generally spoken about when testing a performance car, but efficient engines are often surprisingly economical. Which was the case in the Mini Cooper S around town. When fanging in the country, it sat in the nine to twelve litres per hundred kilometres range. On motorways, that dropped to below the sevens.
Summing up
BMW Mini is a delight to drive and to look at. Indeed, many spend more time improving the looks to their taste than actually concentrating on the driving. A car for all ages and uses. Love it.
