Art forms in shifting sand Some of the world’s best sculptors have been carving up a storm at Dromkeen. Susanne Ruseler, from the Netherlands, has been fashioning her sculpture for the Riddells Creek Sand Art Gallery exhibition on October 27. Sunbury crime stats fall By Esther Lauaki
the past 12 months was driven largely by a reduction in property and deception incidents – with burglary incidents the lowest recorded in seven years. In the Macedon Ranges, overall crime fell by about 5 per cent, to its lowest level since 2016. Total offences in the region dropped to 2389 from 2526 the previous year. Macedon Ranges Inspector Chris Large told Star Weekly earlier this year that the execution of drug warrants across the Macedon Ranges was paying off and police were working hard to keep the community safe. “We know that illicit drug use can be linked
to property crime so this will remain a focus for us over the next 12 months,” Inspector Large said. He said theft was an area of concern and Macedon Ranges police are running a number of operations to help car owners secure their vehicles, including having one-way screws installed on their number plates. The Macedon Ranges also recorded a 29 per cent rise in justice procedure offences while there were significant decreases in drug crime, public order and security offences, as well as crimes against the person.

Crime in Sunbury continues a downward trend, falling 3 per cent in the year to June. Latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency revealed there were 2881 offences recorded in Sunbury between June 1, 2017 and May 31 this year – down from 2993 in the previous 12 months. Across Hume, crime fell by 8 per cent overall, with the municipality recording its lowest crime rate since 2016. Victoria’s crime rate fell 7 per cent. Sunbury’s falling crime rate was driven by a
reduction in justice procedure offences, down 24 per cent to 461 offences (from 609), and drug offences, down 7 per cent. However, crimes against the person were up from 465 offences to 499 (a 6 per cent rise) and public order and security offences rose 7 per cent to 168 offences. Sunbury also recorded a less than 1 per cent increase in property and deception offences, despite an 18 per cent drop in burglaries, which reflected the statewide trend. Owner anger over dead horses By Esther Lauaki Horse lovers have been left “devastated” after their beloved pets, which they paid to have buried, were among horses left to rot in a Romsey paddock. Macedon Ranges council is investigating the property where up to 100 dead horses were recently discovered in varying states of decomposition. Michelle Downes, a former Miss Australia, said she paid $250 to the landowner who promised to bury her horse Dell under a tree.
She said that she is one of a number of horse owners who paid the landowner for burials of their animals. “I took Dell there eight years ago to be buried on the recommendation of a local vet,” she told Star Weekly. “I recently referred a friend to him a year ago as well and I feel terrible now. “He’s well known in the community. “All these years I thought he [Dell] was in a nice spot in a paddock under a tree. It is devastating, it’s awful to think someone would mislead you.”

and said that she didn’t want the purebred quarter horse to meet an undignified end. “He had a leg injury, but it was nowhere near bad enough that he needed to be put down so I brought him home to live his life out happily,” she said. “When Dell’s injury got so bad that it came time to put him down I wasn’t even considering taking him to a knackery. “I’m devastated that he was just left outside like that.” Ms Downes said she would like to see a review of the laws around burial of horses.
Footage released by police last week shows dramatic scenes as three offenders flee following a robbery at a tobacco store in Sunbury. Police are appealing for information after the three men entered the Evans Street store, wearing balaclavas over their faces, about 7.20am on September 18. It is alleged that one offender jumped over the service counter and grabbed the female store attendant by her hair, forcing her to open two registers and demanding cash. Two other men went into a rear store room and loaded a large haul of cigarettes into a blanket. The offenders forced their way into a rear office area and stole cash located inside, as well as the victim’s handbag, police said. The three men fled to a waiting black Holden Cruze sedan, bearing registration AAI-002. As they attempted to leave the scene, the offenders collided with another vehicle and sustained substantial damage to the front passenger-side door. The Holden was sighted on the Tullamarine Freeway, in the vicinity of the airport, and was last seen travelling north along Pascoe Vale Road towards Craigieburn. The 51-year-old store attendant was unharmed. Hume Crime Investigation Unit detectives are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage in the area at the time. A 62 year-old Sunbury man was stabbed during an altercation in a carpark on Horne Street about 6.40am on September 14. Protect policy lacks crucial detail: council

Connecting for Brody By Esther Lauaki Sunbury teenager Brody Hourigan has been battling Ewing’s sarcoma for the past decade and has missed many of the experiences of being a “normal teen” – getting a licence and going out with friends. His former classmates at Sunbury College are hoping to make his battles a little easier. They dedicated the school’s annual Connect Festival recently to raise money for Brody. Teacher Tess Abbott said students organised the event, including everything from scrunchie
making to makeup masterclasses and downball. “This idea was brought to the house leaders by some of our year 12 students who are friends with Brody and his family,” Ms Abbott said. “The day was a success.” All the money raised from the festival will be donated to Brody. Brody, 18, was first diagnosed with the rare form of bone cancer when he was 8. He fought another bout at age 13. In July this year , he was told that the cancer had returned. Brody’s family, led by his cousin Tayla Carrillo, has set up an online crowdfunding
campaign which has raised nearly $5000 towards renovating his room and medical bills. His mum Tracey told Star Weekly that Brody still has a long battle ahead. “Not many people survive a third bout of the disease” Mrs Hourigan said. “But, as Brody says, third time’s a charm. “We don’t know what’s going to happen and it depends on how the cancer responds to the second cycle of chemo. “He could stay on for six months … but he’s the strongest of all of us.” Donate: bit.ly/2uffia9
New state policy for the protection of the Macedon Ranges will require significant fine-tuning before it gets an endorsement from the council. The draft localised planning statement, now known as the Macedon Ranges Statement of Planning Policy (SPP), is out for comment and aims to protect the Ranges as a “distinctive area” and landscape to the local and Victorian community. The council will request several changes to the document, including working with the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning to develop a work plan and funding program to implement the policy. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said that more information was needed. “Officers had some concerns that there was not enough detail as to how to use the document,” Cr Anderson said. The document outlines protected settlement boundaries for towns expected to grow, including Gisborne, Kyneton, Romsey, Riddells Creek, Lancefield and Woodend. Once established, these boundaries will be subject to the same rigorous protections of Melbourne’s Urban Growth Boundary and will only be able to be altered with the approval of both houses of the Victorian Parliament. Hunt for a new home Romsey Men’s Shed is on the hunt for a home base and some new members. Romsey Shed secretary Patrick Holt said that the group’s first mission is to secure a site for construction of a permanent building to house the Men’s Shed. “Several sites have been considered and the group has submitted a formal expression of interest to locate in Romsey Park, next to the Scout Hall,” Mr Holt said. “We encourage community suggestions for alternate sites that would be workable for the creation of the Romsey Men’s Shed, either short term or long term.” The newest chapter to the Macedon Ranges

Window is open for that first home The task of buying a first home is still monumental – but a window of opportunity has cracked open as prices soften and market dynamics shift, according to UBS economist Carlos Cacho.

“For first-home buyers who have got their finances in order and have strong credit, it’s certainly a good opportunity,” Mr Cacho says. “But I’d say it’s probably going to get better.” Melbourne house prices have dropped 1.8 per cent to July 31 but still managed a thin annual gain – expected to turn negative soon – while units posted a fall in the quarter. So, first-home buyers may find some wind in their sails but buying in a falling market presents its own challenges. “If you overpaid 24 or 36 months ago it wasn’t too much of a problem, because within a couple of months, you’d already made that capital back in appreciation,” the economist says. “If you overpay now it could be years before you retrieve that extra payment.” The best approach for first-time buyers keen to wade into one of the most-talked about property markets in the world is to keep an eye out for areas of distress in the market, which should be presenting themselves soon.
“There are going to be good opportunities that come up,” Mr Cacho says. “And that may be a seller who has an interest-only mortgage and is switching to principal and interest and can’t afford the repayments and so has to sell by a certain date. “A case like that could provide an opportunity [for first-home buyers].” Data shows first-home buyers are bolstering their position in the market, in particular filling a hole left by falling demand from foreign buyers. “First-home buyer demand continues to offset a reduction in demand from owner-occupiers and foreign buyers, with state government incentives and moderating prices also likely playing a role in helping first-home buyers move onto the property ladder,” NAB chief economist Alan Oster says. So, with market dynamics finally giving first-home buyers something to work with, the question is when should they make the move? Most economists, UBS included, expect capital city prices to weaken further before hitting bottom.

Sky Blues take the title By Tara Murray Gisborne has had a season beyond expectations in the FFV Sportsmart Boy’s 16B competition. The Sky Blues claimed the north-west title, winning 12 of their 16 matches and finishing four points clear on top of the ladder. The Sky Blues then lined up against the title winners of the east and south divisions, Monash City and Beaumaris, in a round robin finals series. The Sky Blues managed a win in the third game of the series, against Beaumaris, to claim
second place in their division in the state. Sky Blues team manager Mel Paradiso said they were pretty stoked by the result and didn’t think any junior side at the club had gone that far before. Gisborne senior player Tyson Lopez coached the side and was assisted by Quinlan Borg. “It was a bit of a rocky start until they got their feet,� Lopez said. “They finished the season with 12 wins, a draw and three losses and ended up winning their division. “They did really well with a few injuries
during the year. “It took them a while to get there and they’re pretty happy at the moment.� The second place finish caps off a good season for the Sky Blues, with their men’s side finishing second in FFV state league 5 west and earning promotion. Paradiso said there was a good vibe around the club following all the results. The 16B boys team is likely to move into the 16A competition next season. Paradiso said many of the boys will step up a level next year.
Sunbury young gun Madison Prespakis won’t be selected as the number one draft pick in this year’s AFLW draft. The highly talented youngster has chosen to only be available to Melbourne teams, which means she won’t head to Geelong, which has the number one draft pick. Prespakis is expected to be taken early in the draft, having been named the most valuable player at the under-18 national championships the past two years.

Bulldogs chase too late By Tara Murray Gisborne paid for a below par performance, losing to Sandhurst in extra time in the Bendigo Netball League A-grade grand final. For much of the game, Sandhurst looked the likely premier and led by nine goals at three-quarter time. The Bulldogs came from nowhere in the final term to take the lead and while they had chances to steal the match, Sandhurst responded. An Ella Bertacchini shot for the Bulldogs after the siren forced extra time. From there it was all the Dragons who went on to win 53-47. Bulldogs coach Kim Bailey said it was a disappointing performance. “We should have never got ourselves into that position to start with,” she said. “We started poorly and played three ordinary quarters and then decided to go in the last quarter. “We would get a turnover and throw it away and not be able to convert it.” Bailey brought Rachel Mackenzie on for Clare Vearing during the third quarter – it was a move that paid off. “Clare was sick and we tried to get her through but we had to end up taking her off, but that’s no excuse,” Bailey said. “At one stage we were 10 goals down before we swung the change. “I gave them a little bit of a spray at three-quarter time and told them to refocus … I knew they could play a lot better than that.” The Bulldogs had their chances in the last quarter, even hitting the front, but turnovers proved costly. They got the first goal in extra time but then had no answers. Bailey said they had no standouts in the performance with everyone playing OK. She said in the end they peaked too early and didn’t play their best netball when they needed to. However, having made inroads this season they would look to trying to go one step further next season. “We go on to fight another day,” she said. “It was really pleasing to make the grand final, that was our aim. The aim is always to win it, but making the grand final is pleasing.” The Bulldogs under-17 girls also lost their grand final to Sandhurst. The Bulldogs pushed the undefeated Dragons for three quarters, before the Dragons shot away to win, 40-33. “They were really good and they were into it until the last quarter,” Bailey said. “It was a good learning experience for them.”
Stewart finally shakes bridesmaid tag Gisborne’s Maddy Stewart was thinking ‘not again’ during the Bendigo Netball League’s Betty Thompson Medal count. Stewart has finished in the top three in previous years of the count, without taking out the league’s top honour. But this time around she found herself in an usual position up the top of the leader board. She sealed the win in the second last round, it was then a matter of whether she would win the medal outright or share it with Eaglehawk’s Ash Ryan. Ryan polled two votes in the final round to finish one vote behind Stewart, who finished on 23 votes. Stewart said she was shocked to win. “I was thinking here we go, another second place,” she said. “It’s a very big surprise and pretty special and I’m proud to win it. “Personally, though, I thought I had a better year last year. There’s so much talent in all the teams in the league [this season] that people were stealing votes off each other. “Anyone at the top could have won it.” Stewart has had a big year, she was also named in the Victorian Netball League championship division Team of the Year earlier this month. She said she was able to make the most of her opportunities. “We were lucky enough to have quite a few players part of the ANL [Australian Netball League] program,” she said of her side Melbourne University Lightning. “I got a little bit more of an opportunity to be on court than the last couple of years. We’ve had a similar team and we’ve been able to develop the connections and develop as a team.” Stewart didn’t have long to celebrate her award with Gisborne playing in the grand final on Saturday. In other awards, Gisborne’s Rylee Connell took out the A reserve best and fairest while Charlotte Crook was runner-up in the under-17s. Gisborne ends 16-year drought with a nail-biter Gisborne has claimed its first under-18 Bendigo Football League premiership in 16 years. The Bulldogs broke through with a thrilling win against Sandhurst on Saturday. The Bulldogs held strong against a late surge by the Dragons to win, 12.15 (87) - 13.6 (84). Jubilant Bulldogs coach Marty Lakey said he couldn’t be prouder of the playing group. “It’s a tremendous effort … it’s been 16 years since we’ve won a flag in the under-18s,” he said the day after the win. “It’s been a little while between drinks. They are the lifeblood of the club and I’ve been fortunate to have a great bunch of kids. “They’ve worked hard as a group.” Lakey said they had worked their way into the season after a slow start but went into Saturday’s game a little underdone after playing just four games in the past eight weeks. The third quarter is often called the premiership quarter and it proved to be the case for the Bulldogs. They went from 12 points down at half-time to 31 points up at three-quarter time.
Lakey said they knew the job wasn’t done, with the Dragons kicking with the wind in the final quarter. “They took it right up to us and thank god we got the win,” he said. “It was a three to four goal wind and they got a lot of goals early on. “We held them off a couple of times and then had chances to close the game out, but weren’t able to. “With 45 seconds to go they were able to get the last goal to get it back to three points. We were able to hold on.” Lakey said both sides were out on their feet at the end of the game, with the Bulldogs down on rotations because of injuries. Harrison Jones kicked five goals, while Liam Spear was named best on ground. Lakey said Spear was a fantastic player who did everything right and showed fantastic leadership. The win caps off a good season for the Bulldogs, with lots of positive signs for the future. “Six boys played seniors and a lot played multiple games. Baxter Slater won the best and

fairest and Seb Bell-Bartels finished third,” Lakey said. “There was 14 first year players, so the majority will probably get the opportunity to play again next year.

Hodgson returns to Lions’ den By Tara Murray Travis Hodgson is returning home to coach the Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Football League next season. Hodgson, who played his junior football at the club, as well as being a senior premiership player, was announced as the Lions coach this week. He replaces Ben Jordan, who wasn’t re-signed after two years in the job. Hodgson said the Lions were the perfect fit for him and would allow him to spend more time with his family. He has coached Bacchus Marsh for the past three seasons, including to the 2016 premiership, and was contracted to coach them next season, but stepped down. “I live in the town [Sunbury] and my four kids play there,” he said. “It’s good to be back. “I loved my time at Bacchus Marsh, but the travel over three seasons got too much.” Hodgson said he had no plans to coach the Lions next year when he made the decision not to take up his fourth year at Bacchus Marsh
But circumstances changed. The Lions were looking at coaches for next season when news of Hodgson standing down broke. “It all happened pretty quickly,” he said. “I saw myself coaching Sunbury in 2020. It’s funny, going back to 2008 they’ve tried to get me to the club but we’ve missed each other multiple times. “All of a sudden it’s a perfect fit.” Hodgson said he was looking forward to the challenge of helping the Lions move up the ladder and return to finals. He said the club had the right people in charge to make that happen. The Lions missed finals this year for the first time since they moved to the BFL. “They’ve been a powerful club for so many years,” Hodgson said. “Bacchus Marsh before 2016 and Melton now, they fell out of finals and it took them a long time to get back. It becomes a bit of a cycle. “I’m going to work really hard to bring the club back to where it belongs. Success and this club has come hand in hand.” Hodgson said there was some good
foundations at the club to help them rise up the ladder, but they need to add more A-grade talent to the list. He highlighted the under-18.5s making the grand final and the club’s now strong junior program as encouraging signs for the future. “We’re in pretty good shape,” he said. “Two of the better players this season were young players Mitch Conn and Lachie Bramble, who are VFL aligned. “If we can add a couple more players that are capable like that, on a more permanent basis, it would be good.” Lions’ president Hedley Duhau said they were happy to have Hodgson as coach. “We feel that he is the right man for the job,” he said. “Hopefully he can develop the list … Travis brings a range of skill-sets and the club is very happy. “He’s not only a local, but he also brings a good record in regards to coaching and developing young lists.” The club has also announced that Phil Lithgow will coach its women’s side next season.

Sweet redemption for Sunbury C-graders Sunbury Lions’ C-grade netball side is the toast of the club after claiming the Ballarat Football Netball League premiership cup. Of the three Lions sides to make it through to the grand final, the C-grade side was the only one to come away with the win. Having lost last year’s grand final the Lions were also out for some redemption when they took to the court against Ballarat at the weekend. The Lions started the better and led by six goals at quarter-time. They held the margin at the main break. Ballarat got some momentum in the third quarter to reduce the margin back to a goal but the Lions settled and held on to win 39-33. For Lions coach Renee Hulls, the focus was to get off to a good start to settle the nerves. “I wasn’t part of Sunbury last year so I went with my gut instinct and put out the girls I
thought would get the job done,” she said. “We had a few ups and downs and tinkered with a few things through the year. “To their credit, they came out firing from the first whistle and were just unstoppable.” Up front for the Lions were their two young shooters who could still both be playing under-17s. Shelby Holter, who won the league C-grade best and fairest and most valuable player award, was joined in the circle by Chloe Hodgson. Hodgson stepped into the C-grade side when Lauren Boland hurt her knee during the season. Hulls was thrilled with how the two goalers worked together. “I had to bring up Chloe from 19s,” Hulls said. “Having two under-17s in that goaling ring could have been nervy against seniors, but to their credit, they played unbelievable.

“They played out of their skin. I’m speechless for those two.” Hulls said they expected Ballarat to come at them, and they did exactly that. At three-quarter time, she brought on Boland to give an experienced head in the goal circle. “They came back and we reacted to that and then we put our foot down again,” Hulls said. “I said we’ve got 12 minutes ladies, let’s play as good as the first quarter and finish it off in the last … they did.” Lions’ midcourter Courtney Bryant was named best on court. It was grand final disappointment for a second straight year for the Sunbury Lions B-grade netball side in the Ballarat Netball League. The Lions again had to settle for second with Lake Wendouree going back to back. The Lions started the better of the two sides, before the Lakers pegged them back. The Lions lead by one goal at quarter-time. The margin remained at one goal at half-time, with neither side able to make the most of their opportunities. The Lakers had scoring opportunities but were unable to convert, while the Lions were making too many turnovers. The Lakers took control early in the third quarter, forcing the Lions to make some changes. The Lakers led by three goals heading into the last break and didn’t look challenged in the final quarter. The Lions shot some late goals to bring the margin back to two goals, but that was as close as they got. The Lakers won 47-45.
