Romsey rescue takes off By Esther Lauaki The winter wind constantly whistles through Nikki Anticevic’s house and the exposed wiring in her kitchen area could spell disaster. Ms Anticevic, who has lived in her Romsey house for 13 years, has been doing it tough for years and her house has fallen into disrepair. But she’s become the recipient of a wave of community support since meeting Sunbury gym owner David Cannon a week ago. “I went to go have a look at this caravan in Romsey … the lady that was selling touched me

with her story,” Mr Cannon said. “The reason why she was selling it was because her house was in a shambles … she was looking to sell it for $1500 to complete some of the renovations, but that won’t even scratch the surface of what needs to be done. “She never asked me for a handout, but I want to help her out.” A video Mr Cannon posted online asking the community for donations of building materials towards Ms Anticevic’s home renovation has gone viral, clocking up more than 38,000 views.

“It’s turned into something that I never expected,” he said. “It’s quite overwhelming.” Demolition of the kitchen was started by a former partner two years ago, but renovations were never completed. There is no plaster on the walls, no flooring in the kitchen, holes in the hallway and wiring “running everywhere”. Mr Cannon said the bathroom was badly covered in mould because the fan had broken. “The place is a disaster,” he said. Ms Anticevic has endured a lifetime of hardship that has left her grappling with mental illness.

“I was brought up in family group homes, or cottages as they were known, as a ward of the state from the age of three months old,” she told Star Weekly. “I started being abused at age three to about 15.” She has been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia as a result of the abuse. “I’m feeling overwhelmed by the care that people have shown me,” Ms Anticevic said. Bulla faces airport noise rise By Sumeyya Ilanbey and Esther Lauaki Bulla residents could be subject to more frequent aircraft noise with a plan for more than half of all night flights to take off to the north of Melbourne Airport. A draft master plan for the airport’s $10 billion expansion includes plans for a third runway to be built parallel to the airport’s existing east-west runway. Melbourne Airport modelling for the existing north-south runway shows that between 11pm and 6am, 66 per cent of aircraft

would depart using northern flight paths over Bulla, as would 45 per cent of arriving aircraft. Departing aircraft are generally louder than incoming aircraft. Currently, on a 24-hour basis, northern flights paths are used for 28 per cent of departures and 54 per cent of arrivals. Meanwhile, Diggers Rest residents could also face more noise overhead, with more than three-quarters of flights to take off using flight paths over the west. The draft plan shows that 49 per cent of departing flights between 6am and 11pm to take off over western flight paths from the

existing east-west runway and 33 per cent to take off from the new one. Between 11pm and 6am, 29 per cent of aircraft will depart using western flight paths and 65 per cent of arriving aircraft will use western flight paths. Construction on the new runway is planned to start next year to keep up with massive passenger growth. Melbourne Airport predicts passenger numbers will double to 67 million by 2038. Diggers Rest residents have long complained about aircraft noise.

Bendigo rail line punctuality is up with 80 per cent of services arriving at their destinations on time last month. V/Line chief executive James Pinder said performance had bounced back after a challenging May in which punctuality was 76.9 per cent. “While we acknowledge there is always room for improvement, it was good to see better results for the line last month and we want to ensure this continues,” Mr Pinder said. Reasons for delays to Bendigo line services in June included trains stopping at stations longer than scheduled, train and track faults and poor weather conditions, he said. There were also delays because of a signal fault in the afternoon peak at Albion on June 28. Mr Pinder said V/Line was working with Metro Trains Melbourne and Public Transport Victoria to assess performance on shared sections of the network. “We share the network with Metro at Sunbury, so it’s really important we’re working together to look at what we can do to improve performance in these shared sections to help reduce delays,” he said. Mr Pinder said improving performance at the same time as meeting patronage growth continued to be a focus. “We had more than 1.5 million passenger trips on our trains last month and the Bendigo line continues to be one of our busiest,” he said. Reliability on the Bendigo line was on target – above 90 per cent – throughout June for the fifth consecutive month at 96.3 per cent.

have been flying during Romsey Neighbourhood House’s latest course. The Women in Welding program has drawn an overwhelming response with 70 participants in the first week. Work placement volunteer Danielle Stanton came up with the idea to run welding workshops led by her dad Graham, a certified TAFE facilitator in the craft. A notice on the Neighbourhood House Facebook page picked up 12,000 views. House co-ordinator Michelle Balthazar said courses in male-dominated fields are very popular with women. “We’ve already got bookings lined up for August and September,” Ms Balthazar said. “I think women are really interested in predominantly male-dominated industries. p-in session “We have previously run a chainsaw course, Rock which was very popular. “Particularly in our area, which is semi-rural, women are learning these trades for fire prevention because they are quite often needing to clear land or in the event that they need to escape fire-prone areas.” Ms Balthazar said that the organisation would support the establishment of a women’s shed in Romsey to run these courses from. “We want to offer courses like furniture restoration and car maintenance,” she said. “Our Sheilas in the Shed program was a success, but we had to discontinue it because of a lack of space.” Register for the Women in Welding course: 5429 6724.

A short-term monitoring program for the suburb was carried out by Airservices between October, 2014, and January, 2015. It noted that incidents of aircraft noises exceeding 60 decibels ranged from zero to 40 a day, with a daily average of nine. There were 17 times when the noise exceeded 75 decibels. Banding together Macedon talent is rocking out in a band tour around the region. Freeza crews from Bendigo, Castlemaine and Kyneton have joined forces to bring the Calder Roadshow to young people in their towns. The Roadshow will involve a show in Bendigo, Castlemaine and Kyneton featuring a homegrown band from each area. Macedon punk rock band Lazerlips headlined the Kyneton show at the weekend and will support Stop That Mammoth, from Castlemaine, and Bendigoâ€™s Nation Wild in the next two weeks. Lazerlips front man Luke Pender said the band was glad to be playing to a home crowd and looked forward to touring.

Hume council is cracking down on illegal rubbish dumping, with two litter enforcement officers to investigate reports of dumping. Council is calling on the public to report dumpers by calling 9205 2200 or using councilâ€™s Snap and Solve app.

Macedon Ranges councilâ€™s Music in the Sticks officer Natalie Korinfsky said the gigs were aimed at giving young people a drug-and-alcohol free music event to enjoy. â€œItâ€™s a really good opportunity for all of our bands to get some exposure and for young people to see live music in a safe, fun environment,â€? Ms Korinfsky said. The Castlemaine show will be this Saturday, July 28, at the Old Castlemaine Gaol Mess Hall from 2pm, headlined by Stop That Mammoth. Gisborne police are seeking witnesses to a crash at the intersection of Willowbank and Childe Harold roads, Gisborne about 10.45pm on July 12. Police were told two vehicles were drag racing east on Willowbank Road, with one vehicle failing to negotiate the roundabout at the intersection. It skidded for more than 100 metres, colliding with traffic signs and traffic islands. Both drivers were arrested.

An ace up their sleeve By Esther Lauaki Riddells Creek tennis players will soon have a home court advantage thanks to a $100,000 federal funding boost. The grant will go towards the Riddells Creek Tennis Club upgrade project to build three new courts. Presently, players play on two shared-use courts that are marked up for both tennis and netball. But tennis games have to be relocated whenever netball teams are scheduled to play at home. Club secretary Andrew Nicoll said that the upgrades would mean that both codes could play home games at the same time. “The upgrades would put us on the same playing field with other clubs in the shire that have up to six courts,” Mr Nicoll said. “During the winter season, we are unable to schedule netball and tennis games at the same time. “We are the only club in the shire that has that multi-use complexity like this. “This funding will mean we can install a curtain net between the courts to allow us to play netball and tennis side by side, without the safety issue of balls flying everywhere.” He said that the club thanked all levels of government for their contributions to the project. “In the Macedon Ranges, when you want significant projects like this done, it’s beneficial to have federal, state and council funding working together. “This is an example of the community, government and council working co-operatively together.” On a visit to the club last week, state Liberal candidate for Macedon Amanda Millar said that the upgrades would have flow-on benefits across the community.

Kyneton rides regional boom Median house prices in Kyneton are up about 10 per cent according to the latest real estate figures. New Real Estate Institute of Victoria data for the three months to June 30 reveal that median house price performance in regional Victoria outstripped Melbourne. The median house price in Kyneton is $570,000, surpassing the state’s overall regional median of $419,500. Medians across the Melbourne metro area dipped by 0.6 per cent to $840,000 this quarter. REIV president Richard Simpson said despite lower auction clearance rates and fewer overall sales, some sectors of the market were still performing well. “The best performing regional suburbs over the past three months were Wonthaggi, on the Bass Coast, where the median house price jumped 14.9 per cent to $309,000; Kyneton, in the Macedon Ranges, with a 10.7 per cent rise and Wallan, in Mitchell Shire, where the median increased by 10.5 per cent in the quarter to $484,000,” Mr Simpson said. “The first-home buyers’ concession has been a boon for regional areas. “A new entrant to the property market buying a house at the regional median will pay no stamp duty, while a first home buyer of an apartment in Melbourne at the median price would pay stamp duty of nearly $25,000.” Unit and apartment median price in regional Victoria increased to $304,500. Anxious wait on poddle The 96-year-old owner of an historic Mount Macedon home that was destroyed by fire earlier this month is facing another heartbreaking situation – Sienna, her beloved companion, is missing. The 15-year-old chocolate brown poodle was believed to have been seen fleeing the burning house before running back towards it. But firefighters have not reported finding a dog in the ruins of the home and it is believed the frightened dog might be hiding nearby. Sienna’s owner and her carer self-evacuated from the fierce fire that took hold of 117-year-old Durrol in the early hours of July 11. More than 30 firefighters and 10 appliances turned out to the property, which was heritage listed and survived Ash Wednesday. People living in the Mount Macedon area have been urged by the local volunteer fire brigade to keep an eye out for Sienna in a bid to have her reunited with her owner. “In the understandable chaos of the fire at Durrol on Mount Macedon yesterday, the owner’s much-loved chocolate brown standard poodle went missing,” the brigade posted on Facebook. “Having previously wandered to visit the homes of people she knew, there is a chance she may have run from the fire and hidden somewhere nearby.” The fire was believed to have started after a burning log rolled out of a fireplace. The house was almost fully alight when firefighters arrived. Crews remained until the following morning to ensure the scene was safe. Sunbury CFA life honour A Sunbury fire brigade stalwart has been honoured with a lifetime membership. When the Country Fire Authority brigade celebrated its annual awards earlier this month, Frank Brown was rewarded for nearly 30 years of service. The lifetime membership came as a surprise for the junior brigade leader, despite there being such a large number of family and friends at the event. He joined the brigade in 1990 and has led the junior brigade since 1995, teaching young people about firefighting, teamwork and community spirit. Mr Brown is described by his peers as a “much-loved member of the brigade family”. “He’s always willing to turn a snag at local barbecue fundraisers, speak to the community regarding fire safety, participate in annual events such as Santa runs and Good Friday Appeal collections,” the brigade said on its Facebook page. The white stuff arrives Snow at Mount Macedon meant winter fun for 19-month-old Tyler and his family. Recent flurries made for beautiful sights across the region – along with freezing cold mornings. Three to four centimetres covered the ground in parts of the Ranges on July 12, with temperatures dipping to an icy -5C at Woodend, Carlsruhe, Kyneton and Lancefield last week.

It wasn’t the first snow of the year for Mount Macedon, with a dusting of snow having arrived earlier in the month. Temperatures in Melton and Moorabool also dropped below zero on July 14. With the sun out, the snowmen have all disappeared and the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast no snow falls this week. Esther Lauaki

Housing plan draws ire By Laura Michell Hume councillors have slammed the state Coalition’s plan to release close to 300,000 housing lots in growth areas by 2020, saying it will have no benefit for Hume residents. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy recently announced plans to fast track the release of 290,000 blocks of land in growth areas including Hume and Whittlesea in a bid to improve housing affordability if the Coalition wins the state election.

But Hume councillors are concerned the plan will exacerbate the municipality’s infrastructure problems. Cr Naim Kurt said Mr Guy’s plan lacked detail. He has asked the council to write to Mr Guy to ask for an urgent meeting to find out how the Coalition would resource local councils to deal with the growth and how the Coalition will finance the roll-out of infrastructure. “How many of these houses will we be

Cr Joseph Haweil said he was “gobsmacked” when he heard about the Coalition’s plans. “This man wants to put hundreds of thousands of lots on the market. We struggle to get infrastructure funding in the north of our municipality,” he said. “[It is] a very disappointing plan that will bring no benefit to the residents of this city.” Mr Guy said the fast-tracking of 290,000 housing lots was part of a five-point plan to tackle housing affordability.

Agent sold on pet project A pet cause is a good cause – just ask hockingstuart Werribee real estate agent Samantha McCarthy. Ms McCarthy and the real estate agency have donated $10,560 – their fee from the sale of a Werribee house last month – to Pet’s Haven animal shelter in Woodend. Ms McCarthy, who is a senior sales consultant and auctioneer at hockingstuart Werribee, said she had fostered about 40 dogs and puppies for the shelter. Her work with the shelter, which relies heavily on volunteers, had inspired her to help arrange the donation. Ms McCarthy said everyone in the hockingstuart Werribee office was “on board” with the donation. “Effectively we all contributed towards this great cause,” she said. “The lady who owned the property was initially a volunteer herself and is now a vet nurse at the Pet’s Haven vet, so it all went together nicely.

“The money will go towards helping rescue and care for more dogs and cats. “I think it’s important that if you are in the position to help out, whether it be with time, education, or financially, you should,” Ms McCarthy said. “Rescuing and fostering and contributing, however you can, helps save lives.” Alesha Capone

Short films, big stories Macedon Ranges film lovers will be treated to comedy, drama and animation at an upcoming festival. Next month the Macedon Ranges Film Society will hold its inaugural short film festival â€“ Cool Climate Cinema. The program will feature 12 short films screened in two 50-minute sessions with a 20 minute intermission. MY PLACE The science of art is what makes Bonnie Hanlan tick. The Sunbury resident talks to Esther Lauaki about being “The Alchemist”. What is your connection to Sunbury? Most of my family has lived in Sunbury for over 30 years, so it’s an area I spent a lot of my childhood in. My mum moved here a few years ago and my husband and I bought our home here in Sunbury around the same time. I opened my business, The Alchemist Artists’ Supply Store, in Sunbury in April this year.

People are often surprised to know that I am The Alchemist. I don’t have any staff – I have a huge workshop out the back fitted out with industrial-scale equipment and I do all of the framing on my own on site.

How long have you lived in the area? I’ve been living in Sunbury for a little over two and a half years … I grew up in Lancefield, I spent most of my 20s living in Melbourne, but it’s nice to be back in the area.

How did your passion for art come about? This passion for the science of artists materials started when I was working at St Luke Artist Colourmen in Melbourne. What really hooked me was the moment I learned that if you want to paint a violin … the atomic weight of a certain pigment will alter the sound! I am particularly interested in pigment, colour theory and the history of artists’ materials. I am also very slowly working on a recipe book for artists – all about raw materials and paint and pastel making.

What are you passionate about? I am most passionate about artist materials. I love learning about artist materials and sharing this knowledge with other artists and makers. I spend most of my spare time watching documentaries on things like how pencils are made, the history of the colour blue and reading scientific papers by industrial chemists to understand what the chemical difference is between colours. What is your arts background? I have a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with honours from RMIT. I am a practising artist and have had numerous solo and group exhibitions over the past 10 years. I have around 20 works in the Epworth HealthCare art collection and two years ago I was a recipient of a Hume Arts award. What other hats do you wear in the community? I do meet regularly with a group of local artists

and Hume council workers to discuss the arts in Hume and how we can grow the arts scene, particularly in Sunbury. We brainstorm ideas for fostering greater engagement with the arts and promoting the arts practices of those living in our community. I am also a sponsor of the Sunbury StreetLife Festival, which I am really excited about being involved with – it’s such a great initiative. What would people be surprised to know about you?

What is the best thing about living in Sunbury? It really comes down to being close to my family. My mum visits me at the shop nearly every day and we have dinner together every week. I get to see my aunts and cousins regularly and a lot of my friends from school are still in the area. Sunbury has the community feeling of a small town, but all of the services and amenities you need – and it’s not far to head in to the city or out to the Macedon Ranges. My husband and I both love how friendly it is here. Getting to know our neighbours and all of the shopkeepers we see regularly has been wonderful, because you just don’t get that in Melbourne. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? I’m not a town planner so I don’t know how to fix the parking and traffic problems, but one opportunity for Sunbury I feel is glaringly obvious is the potential of our laneways! There are so many awesome little businesses in there and I think if the arcades and laneways got a facelift they could be such an asset to Sunbury. I’d love to see those spaces become more inviting – repave them, add better lighting, a touch of paint and some plants, a few more eateries and maybe a bar or two. You just have to look at what has happened on O’Shanassy Street since the fairy lights went in – you have great businesses all you need to add is a little ambience and it all comes to life.

Business is finally booming, but things weren’t always so rosy for this wee Aussie success story. “It was a struggle for a few years … you have to keep at it,” Stephen says. “We used to go to all of the Celtic festivals, and still do … that is how we spread the word, and two years ago, we finally hit our stride.

Mambourin brings more choice to Sunbury M

ambourin is in the business of connecting people to opportunities and supporting them to achieve what they want out of life. In fact, it’s been supporting people with disabilities for more than 40 years. Leah Winfield, co-ordinator at the newest Mambourin hub in Sunbury, is loving being part of the community and believes everyone is unique and has their own story to tell. “Each person has their own set of goals and their own interests,” Leah says. “With a network of hubs throughout the western region, we can tailor service options to suit all kinds of people. “If people want to make new friends or do things in their community, we can help. Perhaps they may want one-on-one support – we can give that. Our aim is to open up opportunities to people to live their lives, their way.” Mambourin is very much about providing choice. Recently, it has started a cooking course for people with disabilities at Riddells Creek Community House. Other options, directed by the Sunbury hub, include all-abilities tennis at Gisborne South Tennis Club, using public transport, literacy and communication, and library skills. Leah says that with the National Disability Support Scheme almost at full roll-out, people need to understand their choices. “The NDIS is all about choice and control,” she says. “We have an NDIS team that can help people bring their plans to life, guiding them through the intricacies of

the scheme.” A great example of creating opportunities for locals, customer Blake Biasin is now helping out at the centre. “I do work experience at Mambourin because my goal is to get a job,” he says. “It’s good because I get to learn with my friends.” Mambourin runs tours of community hubs and holds “Have a Go” days on which services can be tried for suitability.

uilt in 1977, the Gladstone Park Hotel is being revamped, with its new look expected to be unveiled in the spring. The popular local landmark already offers bistro and bar dining, an award-winning bottle shop, a small day conference facility and budget accommodation – and is home to various kinds of entertainment. But once the modernisation project is complete, the pub will boast a new-look bistro with new menus, a dedicated sports bar, indoor/outdoor garden bar, function facilities and capacity for more entertainment. Adriana Thomas, a long-time manager at the hotel, says the revamp will be sure to strengthen the pub’s already deep sense of community and belonging for patrons. “Benefits to customers are always our priority,” she says. “We make our core focus our people, presentation and products – this is what makes our venue unique.” Since the pub’s doors first opened, it has been under the ownership and direction of the same third-generation publican. “It’s rare and very special to be under the influence of an old-school publican, as well as having passionate and experienced kitchen and frontline staff who genuinely invest in each other,” Adriana says. “Many team members have been with the business for more than a decade, with one recently celebrating their 30-year milestone. This speaks volumes about our commitment in terms of business approach and the calibre of our staff.

“Our executive chef is one such valued employee. She keeps a watchful eye on her kitchen crew and encourages the creation of food they love to make, eat and share. Products are made in-house using fresh ingredients and old-school, traditional recipes, with knowledge sharing a real plus.

Playtime, experts in exhausts T

he story behind the career of Trevor Hill, owner of Playtime Auto Parts in Sunbury, is about discovering a talent early and having the initiative to make the best of it. Trevor left school at 16 and worked at an exhaust shop for seven years. He then took the bull by the horns and opened his own exhaust shop. During a more than 15 year career he went on to establish a chain of stores. He sold up and started Playtime Auto Parts, firstly in Ravenhall and now in Sunbury. Trevor says their brand sits alongside other exhaust system brands and suits standard and sports vehicles in most models. “We’re authorised dealers for some of Australia’s leading brands,” he says. “We not only sell them through our bricks-and-mortar outlets but also online – and now distribute all over Australia.” Some of those brands include Xforce, Redback, Zetti, Lightforce, Idrive, Thunder, GME and Pacemaker, and the list goes on. Product orders can be made online, while work is done at the Sunbury and Ravenhall fitting shops. There are specials available online and on Facebook, and the product range expands all the time. “Our team has a combined 50 years’ experience in the industry so we have the skills to accommodate all exhaust, automotive and 4x4 needs,” Trevor says.

“The crew includes qualified mechanics, welders, painters and IT customer service reps. “It’s great to be able to wake up each morning and head to work to spend part of the day with a group of workmates and my family. “They all do their bit as if they own the business themselves, which translates to our customers getting outstanding service.

Help is on hand for NDIS support M

acedon Ranges Health (MRH) proudly provides high-quality care and support to people living with disability and delivers a range of National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports. Since the roll-out of NDIS in the Loddon Region on May 1 last year, MRH has supported many people across the community. MRH currently provides a number of supports through their NDIS program and, with the recent amalgamation with Benetas, will soon be able to expand and strengthen the suite of services offered through the NDIS. The MRH team is keen to work with clients and their families and ensure they have a great experience in the services provided. I got involved in this program through the NDIS and it has been a great experience. I love getting out with the

groups – we all get on so well. People have noticed a big difference in me.” Bernice Mathers, LEP Assessment officer at MRH, says Susan was initially cautious about joining the Thursday group but had such a great experience she was soon asking to join the Tuesday group as well. “This is a great example of where we can help build a person’s confidence to take that step out the front door,” Bernice says.

We have fun, just doing normal things “We have a welcoming environment that supports participants to make connections, enabling real friendships to form and interests to be nurtured.” Bernice reflects on the past year supporting people within NDIS and says it has brought about a refreshing change to the group and her role. “Having younger people with different experiences and interests has been fantastic,” she said. “We have fun, just doing normal things. The other day I was pulled over driving the bus for a random breath test and the police person said, ‘Gee this looks like a party bus’. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gives El Toucan a fly You won’t want to go swimming for a few hours after eating bandeja paisa at El Toucan Cafe. But should you so desire, the facilities couldn’t be closer at hand – El Toucan is in the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, its seating gazing out upon the various swimming pools. El Toucan boss Frank Torres keeps the likes of chicken nuggets and burgers on his menu. As he says, this IS a swimming pool operation and he DOES want to stay in business. But he’s very proud to be offering a range of true-blue Colombian dishes. It’s to these we are drawn, as are the tables surrounding us inhabited by Colombian families. Bandeja paisa is something of an informal Colombia national dish. Frank tells us its roots lie in its evolution as a hearty lunch for early-starting, hard-working coffee growers. Nat goes the full bandeja paisa – a huge meal and something of a bargain at $20. I opt for the half serve – it’s not listed anywhere, but is available on request. Even it is a substantial meal and also a bargain at $12. Everything about this is mighty … avocado and chubby tortilla, expertly fried egg and rice, superbly creamy beans and fried ripe plantain. And meat – pork belly, chorizo and pulled beef that would match it with any barbecue joint. Empanadas con yuca ($9) are also outstanding. The three empanadas are made with corn meal, the casings stuffed with beef

On an earlier, reconnaissance visit, I enjoyed sobrebarriga ($22) of slow-cooked beef skirt served with rice, avocado, cassava and sofrito. This, too, is a hefty and excellent meal. Though, in contrast to our other selections, in this case the meat is very tender and the cassava – playing the roast potato role – dryish and a little too starchy for my tastes. El Toucan has specials … on the day we visit there’s a liver dish on, while a few folks around us are enjoying what look like very good pork ribs – even if, as Frank maintains, they are less specifically Colombian than the likes of bandeja paisa. For those wanting to try the El Toucan cooking without making use of the centre’s other facilities, there is no admission charge. Winter hours for El Toucan Cafe are Monday-Friday 9am-8.30pm and Saturday-Sunday 9am-6pm.

Thunder back in on track for finals appearance East Sunbury is regaining its confidence in the Essendon District Football League division 2. After a nightmare period which saw the team slip from first place on the back of four losses, the Thunder appear to be back on track. On Saturday, they defeated Burnside Heights, which has earned a reputation as a giant-killer in recent rounds. The Bears looked like they were going to claim another scalp when they held the lead at three-quarter time, but a six goal to two last quarter by the Thunder got them a 15.11 (101)-13.4 (82) win. Thunder coach Glenn Hopkins was pretty happy with the win. “We played the way we wanted to for four quarters,” he said. “We overran them and our pace showed out in the second half. “It was excellent to be on for the whole game.”`

Hopkins highlighted skipper Lucas Shaw [three goals], Tom Cree and Kamen Ogilvie as three of the standouts, with all three playing key roles in the midfield. He said they needed those sorts of players to be playing well to win matches. Jason McMahon and Mitchell Johns were also named in the best. The win is the Thunder’s second straight after a four-game losing streak. Hopkins, who took over as coach three games ago, said the confidence was returning to the playing group. “There’s a different mind-set from a month ago,” he said. “We’re really trying not to change too much. The guys are back and getting their confident frame of mind. “We’ve done what we aimed to do, to get back on track.” Hopkins said he was enjoying the challenge of coaching again and said he was excited by

the young playing group. The Thunder has four games left this season, before a possible first finals appearance. With all but one team still in finals contention, Hopkins knows there will be no easy match. This week they face Northern Saints, who thrashed them by more than 100 points last time the two teams met. “The next four matches are against quality teams and we’ll see where we’re at,” he said. “The next three games are at home … we need to make the most of playing at home.” In other EDFL news, the women’s finals series gets under way this weekend. The Sunbury Kangaroos will play Burnside Heights in a qualifying final, while the Sunbury Lions will play Keilor in an elimination final. Both teams play at noon on Sunday. Tara Murray

Tigers’ one-point thriller By Tara Murray The Macedon Ranges derby lived up to expectations in the Bendigo Football League, with Kyneton winning a one-point thriller against Gisborne. With both teams hoping to play finals, the game took on more significance than some previous match-ups between the two sides. It was the Tigers who came away with the win, 15.12 (102)-15.11 (101). Tigers coach Luke Beattie said it was a rare occurrence to have both teams firing at the same time. “It was a little closer than we would have liked,” he said. “They are playing pretty good footy. “There was a lot on the line for both clubs. We’re trying to fight it out with a second chance in finals on the line, while they are fighting to

play finals “The game lived up to the hype.” In an evenly contested match, it was the Tigers who gained the upper hand in the third quarter and looked set for a win late in the game. But the Bulldogs had other ideas and pushed the Tigers right to the end. “Both teams brought a lot of pressure at times,” Beattie said. “We were able to get a little bit of a gap in the third quarter, we made the most of our chances. “We were looking comfortable with eight minutes to go and then they kicked two or three goals to get back to one point. “They were going inside 50 when the siren sounded. We shouldn’t have let them get back into that position.” Ethan Foreman kicked four goals for the winners. Harrison Huntley, Rhys Magin and

Jordan Mangan were all standouts. For the Bulldogs, Jaidyn Owen, Thomas Wood, Joshua Grabham and Ethan Minns kicked two goals apiece. Minns and Owen were named their best. The win keeps the Tigers in third, while Gisborne remains a game outside the top five. Beattie said they are where they wanted to be. “Our aim was to put ourselves in the position to finish top three,” he said. “The win was particularly important in that aspect. We face Eaglehawk [second] and Sandhurst [fifth] the next two weeks and both will be a great challenge. “The league is going from strength to strength … there’s no such thing as an easy game. “The next couple of weeks gives us an opportunity to refine our game.” In the A-grade netball, Gisborne had a bye.

Romsey is closing in on a Riddell District Football League finals appearance following its best performance of the season. With the top five teams pulling away from the other sides, the Redbacks have been leading the charge of those looking for the final top six spot. On Saturday, they did their hopes no harm with an upset win against Macedon. After an even first half on the scoreboard, the Redbacks ran away in the second half, winning 15.8 (98)-8.9 (57). “It was a good win for us,” Redbacks coach Corey O’Sullivan said. “Macedon had some key players out, but I thought we still played well. “It felt like we were the better team through the day. “They kicked three goals in five minutes in the third quarter, but we were able to steady and run away with it.” Four players kicked two goals each for the Redbacks. Matthew Knox kicked four goals for the Cats. O’Sullivan said the Tessari boys, Nathan and Ayden, were the standouts in an even team performance. “We got contributions from all 22 players. I don’t think there was any player who walked off the ground and didn’t think that they had some good moments.” After the first week of the split round, the Redbacks sit two games clear of seventh but have a game in hand and will play their rescheduled round one match against Diggers Rest this week. O’Sullivan said they were looking forward to the challenge of playing another top five side. “On our day we can best any of those sides,” he said. “But we need to play our best football to win those games. “We’ll pretty much lock away a finals spot, if we can get this game.” In other results, Rupertswood beat the Sunbury Kangaroos 8.13 (61)-3.11 (29), Woodend-Hesket smashed Broadford 30.17 (197)-5.3 (33) and Diggers Rest defeated Lancefield 24.14 (158)-1.5 (11). Young guard scores gold at national championship

Sunbury’s Jade Dunne is still coming down from the excitement of being part of the winning Vic Metro team at the Under-16 national basketball championships. Dunne, 14, who has previously been part of a Victorian school team, said it was a different feeling this time around. “It was really exciting,” she said. “I’m still speechless and it feels surreal. This one felt like an entirely different experience, it felt so more real.” Dunne, a top-age player this year, spent five months working up to the championships, first with trials and then practicing with the team. “We had about two to three months of trials and they [selectors] watched us play as well. “It’s been a pretty big year. “Making it as the older age is a lot easier. I’m

playing in the first team at Diamond Valley, so I thought why not try out.” The Vic Metro side was the standout of the championships going through undefeated. In the final they defeated their arch rival Vic Country 65-57. Dunne, playing as a guard, scored three points in the final, averaging 5.56 points and 2.11 rebounds for the tournament. She scored double figures in two of the pool games, and showed off her defensive skills with 19 steals for the tournament. Dunne said it was an unbelievable feeling to come away with gold. She said going into the grand final, they always had a feeling they would win. “We were told it would be completely different to what we are used to,” she said. “A bit rougher and more physical and we

went in with the mentality it was going to be tough. We worked really hard for it, that was the cherry on top.” Dunne said she played her role during the tournament and did what was asked of her. It was a brilliant weekend for the Victorian teams, with Vic Metro winning both the women’s and men’s titles over the Vic Country sides. Dunne started playing basketball at Sunbury at six years of age and moved to Diamond Valley Eagles three years ago. She said she was happy to see where her basketball career took her. “Now I’ve got the finals with the Eagles VC [Victorian Junior Basketball League VC division] I’ll focus on them.” Tara Murray

Draft beckons for Prespakis By Tara Murray Madison Prespakis had already competed at three under-18 national championships, but there were a few more nerves when she lined up again this year. As a top-age player, Prespakis had much more than just playing for her state at stake – she was playing to put her name in front of AFLW recruiters. Prespakis shouldn’t have worried, she was again one of the standouts of the championships. She claimed dual honours of being named the overall and Vic Metro best player for a second successive year. Prespakis said she was emotional knowing that she was representing Vic Metro at under-18 level for the last time. “I felt a lot more pressure at the start,” Prespakis said. “Being the last one [championship] there was a lot of outside noise, so I unfollowed a few [social media] pages and concentrated on my game. “Once I started playing I was fine.” On field, Prespakis showed her ball-winning ability and was able to hit the scoreboard. She said she was honoured to be named overall most valuable player. She shared the award with Vic Country’s Nine Morrison. “I felt like I was being heavily tagged,” Prespakis said. “I had to play my usual game and do what the coach wanted. “I didn’t imagine winning one, let alone winning two best player awards. I’m very honoured.” The under-18 championships were part of a big year for the Sunbury Lions star. Prespakis captained the Calder Cannons under-18 team and was the run-away winner of

their best and fairest award. She said the Cannons had played a huge part in her development. “It’s been a big part of my football the last four years,” she said. “It’s was another emotional ride, with lots of ups and downs. “I enjoyed helping the younger girls. It’s helped me become a better person and player. “I will miss it.” Among the younger girls at the Cannons, is Prespakis’ sister Georgie. With a possible AFLW career on the horizon, Prespakis recently made her VFLW debut with Melbourne University, giving her a taste of playing against AFLW players. “I was very nervous for my first game,” she said. “The girls hit each other a bit harder and you can’t really compare the speed of the game to ours. “I’m happy to play a few games and compare myself.” As well as juggling VFL commitments, Prespakis will play in an under-18 all star game, with the All-Australian team to be selected from there. She’ll also be counting down the days to the draft and possibly realising a childhood dream. Prespakis said she spoke to former Cannons Monique Conti, Chloe Molloy and Sarah Dargan about what to expect from the draft. “I look at those girls’ success and their stories and think it’s crazy, it could be me.” Come draft day, Prespakis just wants to hear her name. “Since I was a little girl I’ve always wanted to play AFL,” she said. “It’s only three months away from hopefully having my name called out. “I don’t care what colour I’ll be wearing. It would mean the world to me.”

Jets’ spree continues The Sunbury Jets made it seven wins in a row in Big V women’s state championship. The Jets were never in trouble against the Bulleen Boomers after quarter-time. The Jets won all four quarters and extended the lead throughout the night on their way to an 83-56 win. All Jets players who took to the court hit the scoreboard, with six players hitting double figures. As a team they shot at a high 55 per cent accuracy from the field and 42 per cent from the three-point area. Orla O’Reilly top-scored with 19 points. She also had 11 assists. The Jets sit third heading into a final round clash with the McKinnon Cougars on Saturday night. The win is just the fifth for the Jets this season and ends an eight game losing streak. The win means the Jets can’t finish on the bottom of the ladder. The Jets will finish up their season on Sunday, when they take on the Bulleen Boomers. The Jets youth league men’s division 1 side start their finals campaigns this weekend.
