Food lovers will fashion their own wooden cooking utensils before using them to make traditional pork pies at the tools of the trade workshop in Kyneton this month. Damian Sandercock, owner of the Piper Street Food Company, said his love of the humble pie came from his mother’s northern English roots. “Pork pies are very much a traditional workers lunch eaten by farmers, pastoralists, miners who would take them in their pockets,â€? he said. A ‘tools of the trade’ pork pie workshop will be held on July 28, with various other courses scheduled through to October. Mr Sandercock’s food philosophy is centred on sharing. “Dad was a qualified chef and formally trained ‌ mum was trained from the heart,â€? he said. “As busy as they were, we would always take the time to sit around the table and have dinner as a family. “Sharing is a very important part of food and cookery. “People bothered to take the time to teach me as a kid and there’s an obligation to pass that knowledge on.â€? Residents are calling for the state government to overturn new reforms to pig and poultry farming that they believe threaten the protection of the Macedon Ranges. The government announced sweeping agriculture reforms in recent weeks to simplify the planning process for animal producers across the state. The changes, which would come into effect in September, include new land use definitions, changes to planning schemes and new planning regulations around grazing animal production, intensive animal production, pig and poultry farms and hatcheries. Under the reforms, farmers would be allowed to rear 100 chickens and 10 emus or ostriches without a permit or up to 10,000 chickens with a permit. Pig farmers would be permitted to have up to about 1600 pigs provided they are 400 metres from a residential zone. Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said the reforms would remove the bans on pig and poultry farms in rural conservation and rural living zones that protect the ranges. She said the association’s main concern was that the new simplified permit process removed the requirement to give public notice and the opportunity for residents to object. “Hundreds of pigs are potentially allowed,� Ms Pruneau said. “But you have no say, even if you live in sensitive and rural residential areas or towns with a farming zone next door. “These changes leave the environment, our amenities and democracy worse off. “We want the reforms overturned because these changes are completely incompatible with the shire’s and community’s values.� Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said it was about getting the “balance right� between advancing the agricultural sector and safeguarding the environment. Agriculture minister Jaala Pulford said the new reforms would bring clarity to land use planning definitions and would balance the needs of agricultural businesses with environmental protection and the community. “These important reforms will help farmers and agricultural businesses make more flexible and informed decisions to better manage their business priorities alongside any environmental and community amenity concerns,� she said. Dark fears for Sunbury reserve By Esther Lauaki A Sunbury man wants to shed light on safety concerns at a prominent public park in his neighbourhood. Peter Gavin said parts of Mitchells Lane and the basketball stadium carpark at Boardman Reserve were shrouded in darkness at night and he feared for the safety of joggers and walkers. “While jogging along the footpath of Mitchells Lane recently … I noticed that the light at the intersection that leads into the Boardman Reserve was out of action and there
was no football practice, so it was extremely dark,” he said. “There is no lighting in the carpark at the rear of the basketball stadium and there is only one overhead light on the northern side of Mitchells Lane for the whole area.” He said his campaign for better lighting was sparked by a similar Melbourne campaign prompted by the murder of Eurydice Dixon as she walked home through Princes Park in Carlton after a comedy gig last month. “One shouldn’t expect that only people who have martial art skills be the only people

Krystine Hocking took on the leadership role of Holy Trinity Catholic primary school this week with building well on its way at the Mitchells Road site ahead of its 2019 opening. Woodend house fire

A woman escaped without injury from a fire that destroyed a house at Woodend last week. Five tankers and one pumper and other emergency services were called to the scene at Harpers Road just after 3pm on July 1. A CFA spokesman said hoarding was an issue at the home and heavy equipment was possibly needed to remove rubbish. The woman, the sole resident of the house, was assessed by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital. The cause of a house fire is yet to be determined, but the power company was notified.

Macedon Ranges Detectives arrested a 24 year-old Sunbury man on July 1 in relation to a series of thefts of motor vehicles from a number of addresses throughout Lancefield and Kyneton. Police recovered a Porsche four wheel drive, a Silver Toyota Prado and Silver Jaguar Coupe which was later used in a police car ramming. Stolen property allegedly purchased with a stolen credit card was also recovered from the Jaguar. The man was charged with seven counts of burglary, two counts of evading police, a number of thefts of petrol, conduct endangering life and possession of the drug ice. He was remanded in custody.

Water will get the green light over all other sugary drinks at Kyneton aquatic centre starting this week. Cobaw Community Health and Macedon Ranges Health are behind the three month trial of the state government’s Healthy Choices Guidelines – where food and drink is graded using a traffic light system according to their nutritional value. Warning over toxic burn-offs By Esther Lauaki Farmers are being warned that a momentary mistake when burning off can be costly for the environment and land owners. The Environment Protection Authority last week issued a warning to those contemplating throwing extra waste onto the pile when burning off this winter. Metro region manager Daniel Hunt said that landowners could face fines of up to $8000 for burning anything outside the normal range of things like natural wood.
“It can be tempting to add household or farm waste such as silage wrap, chemical containers or old tyres to burn piles just to get rid of them,” Mr Hunt said. “These items don’t burn properly and produce large amounts of smoke. “The environmental impacts of burning the wrong things can be more than just a bit of smoke; you could be looking at toxic air pollution, residue running off into waterways and chemical contamination that persists in the soil. “Some of these things are best sent to a

properly managed landfill, and there are recycling options for common farm waste items such as tyres, silage wrap and plastic chemical drums.” Fallen trees or other natural wood being burnt should be as dry as possible and not freshly cut to minimise smoke.
Farmers should make sure they have any relevant council or CFA permits. “Most farmers understand the importance to their livelihood and their community of preventing contamination of the soil, water and air around them, and EPA prefers to look upon a fine as a last resort,” Mr Hunt said. “It’s the community that suffers if you pollute the air, the soil or local waterways with things that shouldn’t go onto a fire.” EPA urges people to report suspected pollution to the EPA on 1300 EPA VIC or at www.epa.vic.gov.au
Town hall party time A brass band and a family bush dance will be among the highlights of the 150th anniversary celebrations of Malmsbury town hall next month. The town’s centrepiece was unveiled in 1868 and Malmsbury Historical Society will mark the milestone on Saturday, August 4. Stone work on the building, at the corner of Ellesmere Place and Mollison Street, was started by local stonemason John Jones in mid-1867 and on June 3 the following year the hall was opened with a ball and supper. Sue Love, of the Malmsbury Historical Society, said residents had created plenty of memories in the historic building. “I regard the town hall as a newcomer in town,” Ms Love said. “There are so many beautiful buildings in this town that are even older.” She said the town hall had a rich history.
“Everything from weddings, dances, school productions, flea markets, workshops, meetings, memorials, picture theatres, exhibitions, fundraisers – it’s a blank canvas for every occasion,” she said. Festivities will begin with a welcoming brass band from Kyneton and Malmsbury Primary School pupils will re-enact the opening of the hall. Entry will be by gold coin donation. Esther Lauaki

Gisborne land sold for $61 million Melbourne developer ID Land will look to capitalise on demand for housing after spending $70 million on two sites in Gisborne and Geelong. In the heart of the Macedon Ranges to the north of the city, ID Land has paid $61.1 million for a 76-hectare site alongside the Calder freeway at 39 Willowbank Road, Gisborne, that will provide 600 housing lots plus a new primary school. The former farm, now zoned for residential use, was sold by the local Duggan family who had owned its since the early 1900s. In the second smaller deal, ID Land bought
a 16-hectare parcel on Barwon Heads Road for $8 million. The site is adjacent to the developer’s Watermark community which now extends to 40 hectares and which will yield over 600 homes. Combined, the two sites will generate $400 million of end-value housing. “Gisborne represents an opportunity for us to expand our portfolio into a new growth corridor and capitalise on the number of home-hunters who are now seeking regional areas to grow their family that still offer a relatively convenient connection to the CBD,” ID Land Director Jeff Garvey said.
The Gisborne sale was brokered by Savills Australia’s Julian Heatherich, Nick Peden and Benson Zhou who said they had received 12 offers including from offshore and interstate developers. “This is one of the last remaining sites in Gisborne that is suitable for medium-density development,” Mr Heatherich said. ID Land’s Geelong project forms part of the Armstrong Creek Horseshoe Bend Precinct Structure Plan which encompasses a total area of 640 hectares and will offer four new schools, three neighbourhood and local activity centres and 82-hectares of public open space.
“Victoria’s property market remains strong and we believe that despite the many recent regulatory changes, the outlook remains positive in the short to medium term,” said ID Land director Matt Belford. “Our population growth and net migration continues to place pressure on housing so we believe there will continue to be demand for well-priced, quality product in areas that are close to the CBD or surround existing transport and activity nodes in the establishing growth corridors,” he said. Shed’s men sell well By Esther Lauaki Pre-loved items given new life by the guys at Hume’s Men’s Shed are going on sale. Everything that will be on offer at the Sunbury club’s upcoming garage sale, on August 25, will have been restored or hand-made by the local “shedders”. The garage sale, now in its second year, will raise funds to support the men’s shed, which has 120 members from Sunbury and the surrounding areas. Vice-president Mike Newman said the club had built a solid following in its seven years.
“This history of the men’s shed is based around men’s health,” Mr Newman said. “Retirees finish up with work and stay home. This place gives them somewhere to go and be around like-minded people, make friends and help the community.” Hume Men’s Shed activities include a carpentry workshop, a metal and welding area, gardens out the back and social areas with pool tables, dart boards and table tennis. “Everything is very hands-on and our members really enjoy the camaraderie,” Mr Newman said. He said “just about anything is for sale”.
“Electrical equipment, building materials, children’s tables and chairs, bird boxes and even nests for native bees,” Mr Newman said. “We decided to hold a garage sale as part of a number of fundraising initiatives that we do and we are looking to make it an annual event. “We try to keep our membership fees as low as possible and so we need to generate funds over the course of the year.” The Hume Men’s Shed garage sale will be held on Saturday, August 25, at 158 Evans Street, Sunbury from 9am.
People living with or at risk of severe mental illness in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges will have better access to support thanks to a $1.78 million funding boost. Orygen, the national centre of excellence in youth mental health, was awarded the funding by the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network last week to roll out programs at Cobaw Community Health Services in Kyneton and Sunbury Community Health Centre. Orygen also partnered with Djerriwarrh Health Services, Orygen Youth Health, Odyssey House Victoria, and the Youth Support and Advocacy Service to deliver the programs. Clinical director Liz Burgat said the aim was to tailor services that best meet the needs of young people in each of the four areas. “Drawing on our local, national and international knowledge and expertise in youth mental health, we look forward to working closely and collaboratively with our consortium partners, local services and families in the north-west ... to address the needs of young people who require a more complex level of mental health care,” Ms Burgat said. Sunbury link to firearms arrest A firearm allegedly stolen from a Sunbury property along with nunchucks and drugs were among a haul of items seized in a police raid last week. Caulfield Divisional Response Unit investigators arrested a 32-year-old Aspendale man at his home just before 8am on Wednesday. Investigators found and seized two firearms, ammunition, a taser, extendable baton, nunchucks, cash, cocaine, cannabis and a white powder believed to be methylamphetamine. One of the firearms is alleged to have been stolen during a burglary at a rural property at Sunbury in October, 2014. The man appeared at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court charged with drugs, weapons, firearms and dishonesty offences. He was remanded in custody to appear again at a later date. Meanwhile, Macedon Ranges detectives recently executed a search warrant at Harding Lane, Lancefield, supported by members from Kyneton and Romsey police and the dog squad, and recovered about $75,000 worth of stolen property. Discovered in the June 26 raid were a number of stolen trailers, one valued at $16,000; farming equipment, including a harrower; a number of stolen motorbikes, one of which had been missing since March, 2015; building materials and industrial power tools; and a power generator. charged and bailed to appear at Castlemaine Magistrates Court on September 24. Police said that some of the goods had been identified as stolen during burglaries in New Gisborne and Elphinstone, while other property recovered had come from thefts from construction sites and motor vehicles throughout the Macedon Ranges. A police spokesman said residents need to be vigilant. “Police are requesting that owners of sought-after property, particularly tools, mark them clearly with some form of identification to assist police in getting these items returned to the rightful owner,” he said. “We are also asking the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to police.”

Groomer is top dog Bridget Canals is a champion dog groomer. The Petbarn salon manager recently won first place in the salon freestyle open section at the Pet Industry Association’s annual grooming competition. Ms Canals had two hours to make four-year-old Bichon Cross Poodle Nala look her best, competing against dog groomers from around the country. The judges made their decision based on creativity, technical work and aesthetic elements.
Ms Canals credits Nala with her win. “I think Nala set me apart from the others. She is a very pretty looking dog and takes advantage of her cuteness,” she said. Ms Canals, who has been a dog groomer for about seven years, said she loved getting to work with dogs every day. “I got into the industry when I was 17 and so it is all I have done. MY PLACE David Fairclough’s love for animals goes right to the bone. The Gisborne osteopath talks to Esther Lauaki about his unique line of work.
My connection to the Macedon Ranges is I live here and have run successful osteopathic businesses in the Ranges with my wife for 17 years. What are you passionate about? We are passionate about osteopathic manual medicine and the way manipulative intervention can act as a catalyst for the body to use its own mechanisms to heal itself. We now love the fact that we can treat animals in the same way. How did you become an osteopath for animals? To become a qualified animal practitioner I completed a two year post graduate program in animal biomechanical medicine (ABM) that is open to experienced osteopaths, veterinary surgeons and chiropractors that are university degree health practitioners registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. What animals do you work with and why would they typically need your help? We can work on most animals but typically horses, dogs and cats. Animals have musculoskeletal problems as we do which
often manifests itself as lameness, pain and inability to move normally. These cases are rewarding to treat as they respond well to ABM. What other hats do you wear in the community? I also treat horse and rider to balance their movement for optimal performance in the competitive ring. What would people be surprised to know about you? I am, and have been, the local osteopath in the Macedon Ranges for 17 years, am a high level martial artist, I learned from Bruce Lee’s teacher, a neuroscience lecturer and current author of a paper for peer review on the limbic motor system in horses. What is the best thing about living in the Ranges? The best thing about living in Newham and the Macedon Ranges is lifestyle, good rural community, beautiful views and excellent wine region, horse and dog area and community, activities, the wildlife and hanging rock. Curtain call on bullying Thomas Currie is doing his bit in the fight against bullying. The 19-year-old performer will debut his show, The Curtain Rises, at the Bluestone Theatre in Kyneton for one night only on August 18 to raise money for the Bully Zero charity. Bully Zero is Australia’s leading charitable organisation implementing anti-bullying and cyberbullying programs in primary and secondary schools. The Curtain Rises features music from the 1920s and 1960s sung by Currie and accompanied by Geoffrey Scarlett on piano. Currie said opening the show in Kyneton before heading to Melbourne in December was “a great honour”. “I have fond memories of attending large
family reunions in Kyneton at the Botanical Gardens. “My love of the performing arts developed at a young age and, after attending a study tour with a small group of acting students to New York in 2016, my career path was determined.” “I have since developed an immense passion for teaching and mentoring students,” he said. Guilty plea over girlfriend death A Diggers Rest man has admitted to murdering his 29-year-old girlfriend by bashing her to death. Shane Robertson faced Melbourne Magistrates Court last week and pleaded guilty to murdering former hairdresser Katherine Haley on March 9, 2017. The court heard that Robertson killed the mother-of-two by striking her five times to the head with a dumbbell bar on the night they broke up at their Diggers Rest home. Members of Ms Haley’s family were present at the hearing, including her father, sister, aunt and cousin. Several women cried during the proceedings. Emergency services were called to the home in Fairfield Crescent after 11pm that night. Ms Haley’s body was found fully clothed and she had suffered extensive head trauma. Robertson was charged with murder the next day. The pair had previously been described as a “very happy and a very lovely couple�. Police said Robertson became jealous after Ms Healy started a waitressing job following the birth of her second child. He didn’t like her working at a pub with men and believed she was cheating on him. Robertson made Ms Haley give him her phone so he could look at her social media accounts and forced her to delete those accounts and to stop speaking to male co-workers, police said. In the weeks before the murder, Ms Haley told friends Robertson had become possessive and she was thinking of leaving him.

Early on the morning of the murder, Robertson messaged Ms Haley: “Good night babe, had a good night with not only my best friend but my life partner. Here’s to our new beginning at life.� He messaged and called her repeatedly throughout the day before the pair went out for dinner and went home. An argument broke out between the couple over Ms Haley using her mobile phone, court documents show, and she told Robertson that she no longer loved him. The court heard that following the murder, Robertson called his mother and said: “I kill her mum. I kill her. I didn’t mean it.� And later: “I’ve done it. I’ve bashed her brains in. There is brains everywhere.� The court was told Robertson was at risk of self-harm and was having suicidal thoughts in custody. He was remanded to appear in the Supreme Court for a directions hearing. – The Age

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds Small Graces packs a big punch The burned-out shell of Little Saigon Market casts rather a glum metaphorical shadow across Footscray central, so we love it that Small Graces and some of its neighbours are mounting a fightback by bringing life and sunshine to Byron Street and surrounds. So we definitely pay attention when informed a dinner service is being launched. Not only that – we are invited to try it out (see full disclosure below). Thus it is with keen anticipation and high expectations that Bennie and I front up for dinner. Our expectations are not met. Instead, they are exceeded in grand and delicious style. Just about everything we try from a brilliantly chosen selection from the deep dinner menu is a righteous hit. A salad of beets, grapefruit, radicchio, hazelnuts and goats cheese (top photo, $14) is enjoyed by us both, but especially by Salad Boy Bennie. La Hoguera jamon serrano and garlic-fennel salami are wonderful and served with pickles. They come with luscious warmed green olives and inhalable chargrilled bread. Carrots, salsa of carrot tops, pecorino pepato and seeds ($13) are a sublime veg offering. Squid ink croquette with garlic aioli and sorrel/pea croquette with preserved lemon aioli ($4 each) are, for us, duds. We have no problem with their striking ugliness. But they are too salty – even for us,

Also somewhat visually unappealing is the cauliflower, currants, fermented grapes and macadamia nuts ($15). But in this case the result is an intriguing winner. A pile of lentils appears dull. It’s not. It’s one of the night’s high sensations. Lentils, quince and mints ($12) are moist, succulent, rather sweet and a tremendous pulse dish the likes of which we’ve never before encountered. Brussels sprouts, Jerusalem artichokes and Manjimup truffle ($15) are al dente and a big hit with Kenny; Bennie, no so much. Our evening’s sole outright meat hit comes from hanger steak, burnt onions and bearnaise ($20). We adore that juicy meat and its onion foil. The sauce is good, too – but we consider its richness a bit jarring and unnecessary. The inner west is blessed to have Small Graces doing its dinner thing. And there’s a heap of dinner-time scope in which vegetarians can frolic. There’s booze on hand at Small Graces, which is now open for dinner Thursdays-Saturdays. Cats keep a clean sheet
By Tara Murray Sunbury United is back in the pack after suffering a second straight loss in FFV state league 3 north-west. Sitting just one point off a top two and promotion spot, Sunbury was keen to get back on the winners’ list against Point Cook. Sunbury had the better of the opportunities in the first half, including hitting the woodwork a couple of times. With a gale force wind impacting players, neither side was able to find the back of the net, despite having an even share of the ball. Point Cook got the breakthrough in the 89th minute through a header. Sunbury was unable to find an equaliser in injury time, losing 1-0. United sits sixth on the ladder on 22 points, four points behind second-placed Sebastopol Vikings. United, though, has played one less game than all the sides above them on the ladder. Sunbury has another big challenge, next up facing fifth-placed Upfield. Gisborne has slipped to third on the state league 5 west ladder, after its second loss of the season. Melton Phoenix caused one of the upsets of the season knocking off second-placed Gisborne. Phoenix found the back of the net in the dying minutes through Alain Nzitunga to get the win 1-0. The loss leaves Gisborne sitting on the same amount of points as Deakin Ducks, but below them on goal difference. After not getting a win the past three weeks, Gisborne will be looking to return to the winners’ list this week at home against Melbourne Lions.
Macedon remains undefeated at the top of the table, after a strong win against finals-bound Wallan in the Riddell District Netball League. Last time the two teams met, the Magpies pushed the Cats all the way and it was the same again on Saturday. Windy conditions made it hard to score and it was the Cats who were able to adjust the best. They were able to extend the margin from one goal to 13 at the last break. The Magpies won the last quarter, but it wasn’t enough with the Cats winning 37-25. Tayissa Coppinger was named the Cats’ best. Elsewhere, there were some one-sided results. Romsey returned to the winners’ list, accounting for bottom side Broadford, 78-17. Goaler Rhiannon Ezard was named best of the Redbacks. Rupertswood had no worries against Melton Centrals, easily winning 60-34. Defender Clare Johnson was named best on court, while Abby Gilmore shot 27 goals. Riddell came out on top against an undermanned Woodend-Hesket. The Hawks were competitive at stages against the Bombers, but the Bombers experience showed through, winning 62-24. Maddison Wallmeyer was named best on court, with Rebecca Colwell shooting 46 goals. Rockbank got a second win against Diggers Rest this season, winning 46-32. Tara Murray

Sunbury looks to expand with women’s cricket team Sunbury could have it’s first women’s cricket team later this year, with Sunbury Cricket Club looking to form a team. Looking to further expand the club and make it more inclusive for the local community, the Roar is keen to have a women’s side and open more opportunities. Roar president Brendan Doyle said they were keen to give local females a place to play. He said while there was junior girl’s team in the area, he said it looks set to be the first club in Sunbury to have a senior women’s team. “Last year during one of our games, I was talking to one of the players’ partners and she said that she goes to Gisborne to play cricket,” he said.
“I’ve been involved with Sunbury juniors for a number of years. “A lot of girls have been coming through the age brackets. They come to under-16s and there’s no real pathway in Sunbury clubs for them to continue to play cricket in the area. “What we’ve seen is either they completely give up cricket or they go outside the Sunbury area.” Doyle said they had previously looked at having a junior girls team, but hadn’t been able to get the numbers. He said that was something they were still looking at. The club has already gained formal approval from the CV Community Cricket Competition to field a team in their north-west one-day
competition. “We’ll play against teams like Gisborne, Tullamarine, Melton Centrals, St Anthonys, Craigieburn and Hoppers Crossing, so it’s a local competition,” Doyle said. “My belief is the more female sides in the area the better.” Doyle said they were confident of getting a team up and going for this season, but said if they didn’t succeed they would continue to push the idea in the coming years. He said there had been interest from both players and possible coaches. He said they were hoping to get a few experienced players in the side. “There’s no age bracket, we want all women
Cannons fire in the wind By Tara Murray The Calder Cannons handled the windy conditions on their way to an impressive win against the Western Jets in the TAC Cup. After an even first half on the scoreboard, the Cannons kicked eight goals to one in the second half to come away with a convincing 10.18 (78)-3.4 (22) win. Cannons coach Ross Smith said the game was played in really tough conditions. “It was very windy and the wind was going straight across the ground,” he said. “The ball spent most of the game on the grandstand side. “We handled them better. We did have a couple of training sessions during the week, which helped. “We were able to control the game. We took 75 marks which is rare.” Smith said they didn’t go in with the intention of chipping the ball around, but it was the way it turned out. He said their dominance with the ball was reflected on the scoreboard. “We had a lot of the ball in our half, and had repeat inside 50 entries and plenty of scoring opportunities.” The Cannons could have won by a lot more had they kicked straight. While the wind did play some part in that, Smith said goal kicking had been an issue for them. “We had a number of set shots in the first quarter that were blown away by the wind,” he said. “It was nice to eventually get a few goals.” Tye Browning and Harrison Minton-Connell kicked two goals apiece for the Cannons. Daniel Mott was named the Cannons’ best for a second straight week. Smith said the match gave them a chance to look at a few of the younger players and players coming back from private school football. Lachlan Johnson, Minton-Connell and Harrison Jones were among them. He said Jones, who is undersized, had to shoulder the ruck load on Saturday. Smith said this week’s selection would be the hardest of the season. The Cannons’ players who have been part of the Vic Metro team are available for selection. Smith said the next three weeks would test where the side was at as they play the top three teams. The return of the Cannons’ Vic Metro representatives comes on the back of some good personal performances for the players. Smith said it was pleasing to see them perform at a higher level. Prospective father-son pick Rhylee West was named in the All-Australian team. “It’s really pleasing for him and for us,” Smith said of West. “It underlines his talent and doesn’t do his draft prospects any harm. “Curtis [Taylor] played good as well and Lachlan Sholl played some good games.”

Tigers spread the load and return to form Sunbury United Tigers returned to form against Northern Thunder with a big win in NRL Victoria first grade. Having had one of their more disappointing performances in their last match, the Tigers showed more of the form that has them second on the ladder. Leading by a try at half-time, the Tigers took it up a level in the second half, winning 44-24. Tigers coach Terry Constantinou said it was pleasing to put some good football on the park. Having had a bye last round, he said there had been plenty of time to think about their loss to Waverley Oakleigh Panthers. “For us, the loss was a good opportunity to rebuild after a few wins in a row,” he said. “You can get complacent. We sat down and addressed a few things and we came out this week and played well.” Constantinou said the Thunder were a bogey side for the club, with the Tigers losing the first match-up between them this season. He said the key was to run out the game well. “There were good contributions from everyone,” he said. “We came into half-time with a try lead. The key was fitness, as you can lose structures under fatigue. “I said the game wouldn’t be won at the start of the second half, but the last 10 minutes. “We scored three tries in the last 10 minutes.” The Tigers sit second on the ladder, four points behind ladder leaders Werribee Bears. The Tigers are the only team to beat the Bears this season. Constantinou said the win had given them a lot of confidence going forward. “They are the benchmark and we thought if we could go close, or knock them off, it would hold us in good stead come finals. “Everything just clicked … We have the cattle, it’s about getting everyone going at once.” Constantinou said their aim was to make sure that they cemented a top two spot and a double chance. He said not only were the results starting to come the side’s way, there was also a good vibe around the club.

Sunbury baseballer going for gold in world cup Sunbury’s Bronwyn Gell is hoping to add a gold medal to her collection at the 2018 Women’s Baseball World Cup. Gell, 24, will be competing for the Australian Emeralds at her fifth world cup in Florida in late August. Having won a silver and bronze medal at previous world cups, Gell said she would like to complete the set. For Australian female baseball players, the world cup is the pinnacle of the sport. “The expectation is that we are going there to win gold,” she said. “It would be a lie otherwise. “We definitely want to come back with a medal and would be disappointed if we didn’t medal. Last world cup we came fifth, and it’s firing us up for this time round.” Gell said they had put a lot of hours in preparing for the world cup. She said there had been more opportunities to train and play together, both at home and abroad. “We’ve been doing a fair amount of training
together,” she said. “We’ve been training a couple of days a week. “We’ve been playing in a men’s league and they have pushed us a bit harder, as they don’t want to lose to a team of women. “It’s a lot of fun and a good opportunity. “We’re also heading to Japan to train with a professional team and get that high intensity training.” Gell has been a mainstay in the Emerald’s side since making her debut as a 17-year-old. She said it was slightly weird that she was one of the more experienced players in the side. Gell started playing baseball following in the footsteps of her father and brother. Living in Sunbury, it meant a lot of travel but it was worth it as she made the state team at the age of 14, before making her senior Australian debut three years later. “My dad used to play in Bendigo when I was younger,” she said. “My brother then started playing and I always wanted to do what he was doing. I grew
up playing tee-ball and started played baseball in primary school. “We used to travel around a lot. “The closest club was Essendon and at the time, Essendon didn’t have a women’s side, so I travelled out to Doncaster. “At our club the older girls were in the Australian team and they were kind of a mentor and inspired me to get to the level I am.” Gell currently plays with Essendon, where she is also involved in coaching. She said that was something that she enjoyed doing. Having just started full-time work, Gell said she was getting used to combining work and playing. Cats in flag contention By Tara Murray Macedon continues to find ways to win in the Riddell District Football League, this time knocking off ladder-leaders Wallan. Having started slowly, the Cats are starting to show everyone why they won last year’s premiership. On Saturday, they won a thriller against the Magpies in what could be a finals preview. Cats coach Ben Tankard said they just kept doing what they had to in order to come away with the win. The Cats ended up winning 7.10 (52)-7.8 (50). Both sides dominated a quarter each on the scoreboard in the first half with a howling breeze favouring one end, with the Cats leading by 10 points at the main break. The Magpies gave themselves plenty of scoring shots with the breeze in the third quarter, but could only kick two goals and held a one point lead at the final break. Despite having the breeze, the Cats found it hard to score in the final quarter. Tankard said knowing they had the breeze put them under pressure. “It would have nearly been easier to be two or three goals down at three-quarter time,” he said. “Wallan had no other option but to go full out attack. The footy was in their 50 when the siren went. “The result could have gone either way and both teams deserved to win, we were just in front.” Zach Smedley was named the Cats’ best in the win. Tankard said Smedley continued to step up when he was needed. “He started the year as our third midfielder behind Errol McConnell and Casey Summerfield. “With Errol breaking his leg and Casey not playing after quarter-time [on Saturday], he’s a huge part of the reason we won.” Summerfield could possibly miss a few weeks with a rib injury. Matthew Knox, Tom Waters and Clinton Burgess were the other standouts. That result, and Rupertswood’s win against Melton Centrals, means three teams sit even on points on top of the ladder. The Sharks, who defeated Centrals 8.7 (55)-4.6 (30) sit on top with percentage ahead of the Cats and the Magpies. Tankard said having gone under the radar for the best part of the first half of the season, they were now considered among the favourites. “Yesterday ended going under the radar,” he said. “We had a really good win against Woodend and now knocked off the top side. “It puts us back in the picture and we’re OK with that.
