Parents in the Romsey and Lancefield areas are ramping up their calls for a secondary school. The push for a local secondary school has escalated after funds were allocated in the 2018-19 state budget for consultation on extending Romsey Primary School to cater for years 7 to 9. Lancefield father Jason Norris said he was planning a petition to take to the state government, urgently requesting that it build a secondary school. He said consultation plans were not sufficient. “There was a petition for a school … 20 years ago when I moved here,” Mr Norris said. “Now the area is growing rapidly.” Mr Norris said children living in Lancefield and Romsey should not be forced to travel half an hour on buses to secondary schools. Presently, children who attend Romsey, Lancefield, Bolinda and Hesket primary schools have to travel to Kyneton, Gisborne or Sunbury to go to state secondary schools. A Romsey mother told Star Weekly that residents “absolutely need a school in the area”, particularly because of transport demands. She said her daughter, in her final year at Sunbury Downs College, often had trouble securing a ride to school. Her daughter catches a bus organised by private school Salesian College, but there’s not always room on the bus. The mum, who does not want her name used, wants her son to start at Sunbury Downs College next year. But she said she has been told he was behind 18 other students on a waiting list. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said she had spent a lot of time talking to Romsey families about the issue. “I know parents are concerned that their children have to leave town to go to high school,” she said. Ms Thomas said that was why funding had been allocated in the state budget for the education department “to work closely with the school community to understand the aspirations of Romsey parents and determine a timeline for the school to transition to year 9”. “This is a big step and we need to get it right because the one thing we don’t want to compromise on is a first-class education for Romsey kids,” she said.
Hundreds of stargazers are expected to gather at Gisborne Secondary College tomorrow night to participate in a national attempt to break a Guinness World Record. Residents will each take their own telescope or binoculars to the school grounds to look at the moon for a 10-minute period, at the same time as thousands of other Australians. Run by the Australian National University and the ABC, the event is an attempt to beat the world record for the Most People Stargazing Across Multiple Venues, which currently stands at 7960 people across 37 locations. Event registration will take place at 7pm (on Wednesday, May 23) at the school. The world record attempt will happen between 8-9pm. Anyone is welcome to join the event, but participants must each have their own telescope or binoculars to be included in the world record setting. Entry is by gold coin donation. SIDNEY AND CHLOE

Autumn’s a fine season in Macedon By Serena Seyfort More than 850 parking infringements were issued in Macedon as people flocked to admire the autumn leaves. Macedon Ranges council gave out 850 fines – and even more were issued by Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol officers from March 30 – May 7. The area was patrolled more stringently than usual during this period to increase safety and
enjoyment for the influx of autumn visitors. Parking along the famous Honour Avenue was prohibited between 9am-5pm for the five and a half weeks, and the road’s speed limit was dropped to 40 kilometres an hour. But despite the numerous signs, masses of people were caught leaving their cars along the road. Locals said some people refused to recognise that Honour Avenue was even a road – with pedestrians regularly opting not to move off the
road for cars, and even sitting and lying on the road for photo opportunities. People were also spotted climbing fences into private properties to admire the scenery. The thoroughfare to Mount Macedon was consistently crowded with pedestrians during daylight hours, unlike ordinary months when the avenue’s main traffic is cars. Parking offences were particularly high over the Easter long weekend. The council issued 196 parking fines in Macedon between Friday,
March 30 and Monday, April 2, on top of the fines issued by local police. For the first time this autumn, the council placed a visitor information booth in Centennial Park over three weekends and on Anzac Day. The council estimates the booth promoted local businesses and other regional attractions to 3000 visitors. Macedon Ranges council said it would implement these temporary measures again next year based on this year’s outcome.

Local fire brigades are warning residents to take extra caution as the colder weather sets in, following a busy call-out period. Gisborne CFA was one of several Macedon Ranges brigades called out to six incidents in under a week earlier this month. The volunteer firefighters battled four house fires, an out-of-control burn-off and were called to release children from a locked car. Gisborne CFA has taken to Facebook to remind residents to be especially careful with their heat sources. “We would like to remind residents to keep safe while staying warm,” Gisborne CFA community safety co-ordinator Tom Ruff said. “Don’t leave open fireplaces burning overnight and don’t dry clothes on heaters or close to open fireplaces.” Mr Ruff asked residents to be careful with electric blankets and to remember to clean lint filters in clothes dryers. The CFA has also been asking locals to ensure they register burn-offs by calling 1800 668 511 to avoid firefighters being called out to false alarms, and to keep close watch over any burn-offs during the fire and in the days afterwards. “Residents conducting burn-offs are required to clear the surrounding area of anything that can burn, have water on hand in case the burn-off breaks containment lines and have an adult in attendance at all times while the fire is burning,” Mr Ruff said. The man accused of murdering Kyneton woman Alicia Little will face a contested committal hearing in December. The 44-year old appeared in Bendigo Magistrates Court via video last week after being charged with a single count of murder in December last year. Building on a career Romsey’s Nathan Blair has taken out the titles of both State Apprentice of the Year and Metropolitan Apprentice of the Year. The 22-year-old carpenter received the Master Builders Victoria awards at a ceremony at Etihad Stadium earlier this month. Master Builders chief executive Radley de Silva said Nathan exemplified the skills, work ethic and positive attitude required to be a successful tradesperson in the building and construction industry.
“Nathan shows commitment and drive in his work, which will hold him in good stead for a busy and productive career,” Mr de Silva said. Nathan has completed a carpentry apprenticeship at local business Mt Gisborne Homes and is studying at Skill Training Victoria. Wild fungi prompt poison warning By Serena Seyfort As mushrooms pop up across the Macedon Ranges, residents are being cautioned about eating wild fungi. The Victorian Department of Health and Human Services has issued a warning about consuming wild fungi, saying this autumn’s warm weather has created ideal conditions for poisonous varieties.
Chief health officer Charles Guest said the two most dangerous varieties – the death cap and the yellow staining mushroom – were often gathered by foragers after being mistaken for field mushrooms. Professor Guest said the death cap was a large mushroom. Its cap ranges in colour from light olive green to greenish yellow. He said the yellow staining mushroom
He said any mushrooms found in native Australian bushland would be inedible, with the safe varieties of mushrooms found under trees originally from the northern hemisphere, such as pine trees. Mr Fuller advised residents to get advice about whether mushrooms they have found are edible from online forums such as the Facebook group Australian Wild Mushroom Hunters.

Salute to volunteers Kate Stephens is one of the many local volunteers who make up the Macedon Ranges’ community. As part of the council’s casserole club, she cooks and delivers a meal to a less-able member of the community once a week. “My husband and I are here on our own, and I usually make enough for a few people, so I like to be able to share with people who can’t cook for themselves,” Mrs Stephens said. She has encouraged anyone who has time, or who is used to cooking for a family, to join the casserole club and feed someone in need. Macedon Ranges council is celebrating its volunteers such as Mrs Stephens this week for National Volunteers Week (May 21-27), while also asking more people to help out. Acting mayor, councillor Natasha Gayfer, said there were many passionate people in the community who offered their time, effort and assistance. “The contribution made by our volunteers to our services is incredible,” Cr Gayfer said. More than 500 people volunteer across the
council’s services and activities, and there is always room for more. Volunteer opportunities are available with home and community care services, at the visitor information centres, at Kyneton Museum or at performing arts events, assisting with youth programs and as part of the casserole club. Rather than renovating their house and buying a new car, Lisa and Steve Cole decided to take their four daughters travelling around the world for a year. They rented out their Riddells Creek home in December 2016, took their girls – aged 12, 13, 15 and 16 – out of school and flew to Malaysia. The family of six spent the next 13 months exploring Asia, Europe and Africa, holidaying, volunteering and learning in depth about alternative cultures. They spent nine weeks shadowing an Indian doctor on his visits to villages in rural India, helping him deliver basic healthcare and check-ups. In Morocco, the Coles helped teach English to adults in classrooms in return for their board. In Hoi An, Vietnam, they rented a
traditional house for three months and lived like a Vietnamese family. They rode bikes and shopped at markets. Mrs Cole said the Vietnamese locals considered her family to be ‘one of their own’ once they passed the two-month mark in their stay, and were charged a lower price for their groceries. The girls stayed up-to-date with their schoolwork during the year via the distance education program, communicating with teachers through email and video chat. Since returning, they have rented a house in Sunbury to be closer to public transport, allowing the girls to be more independent and be able to take on jobs. Serena Seyfort

Local voice for detention centre Malmsbury residents now have a forum to voice opinions on happenings at the town’s detention centre. The state government has established a Community Advisory Group (CAG) to inform the community about operations at Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct, and to hear what the group has to say about them. The creation of the advisory group comes after more than 15 inmates escaped the centre last year, but the government said it had been set up to specifically deal with the facility’s 32-bed expansion and building a more secure perimeter fence. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said Malmsbury residents were “passionate about all aspects of their town”. “The CAG will ensure their views on the operation and expansion of Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct are heard,” she said. Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos said it was important the community had a say about the precinct. She said the CAG included a broad cross-section of the local community such as representatives from the Koori community, police, the CFA, Macedon Ranges council and the Victorian Department of Justice and Regulation. Members will be required to attend regular meetings to identify concerns relating to the precinct and provide advice on issues raised by the expansion works. They will also advise on the sustainability of the young offenders’ rehabilitation programs in the community. Plans for Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct’s expansion have been approved by Macedon Ranges council and Kane Constructions has been contracted for the job.
In the spirit of fairness Malmsbury Fire Brigade’s captain has been honoured in the inaugural Spirit of CFA Awards. Anthony Stephens received the state Inclusion and Fairness award at a ceremony in Ballarat at the weekend. Mr Stephens said the award was representative of the work of his entire local CFA brigade. “It’s not just recognition for me, but for the brigade as a whole,” he said.

Mr Stephens said the group had done a lot of work to increase its diversity and be reflective of the whole community. He said the brigade had stepped up its community engagement to get the message out that there was a role for everyone in the CFA. Having volunteered for the organisation for 12 years, Mr Stephens said he believed fostering a diverse and inclusive brigade had benefits for the community as a whole.

Gisborne’s great start Gisborne couldn’t have hoped for a much better start to FFV state league 5 west. Having had the bye at the weekend, Gisborne sits second with a 6-1 record. Gisborne coach Danny Ciantar, in his first year as coach, is thrilled with where his side sits at this part of the season. “It’s fantastic and we’ve been playing really well,” he said. “The consistency is starting to come with the new players.
“We knew it would always take six to seven weeks for everyone to gel. Everyone is working together.” Ciantar said the likes of Jake McIntyre (who has scored nine goals), Jack Spargo, Matthew Mocciaro and Joseph Cavoli were all starting to gel. “We could be playing a lot better,” he said. “We’re good in patches and causing problems for teams and scoring goals. “Those periods are getting longer.” Ciantar said the bye came at a perfect time, with some players carrying a few niggling
injuries. He said they will enter the second part of the season with an idea of where they sit in the competition. “The first half of the season is always about understanding what the competition is like and looking at the other clubs. “We will come up against sides like Moonee Valley and Westside Strikers in the next month.” Meanwhile, in state league 3 north-west, Sunbury United’s game against La Trobe University was postponed due to poor ground condition.

The Bendigo Football League has slipped further down the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championship rankings following its loss to Hampden Football League on Saturday. Entering the competition as the ninth and 10th ranked teams, the result means the Bendigo League will most likely be ranked outside the top 10 next season after successive losses in the championships. On Saturday, Bendigo stuck with Hampden for three quarters, before Hampden got a small break in the final quarter, to win 11.16 (82)-10.13 (73). An inaccurate third quarter cost the Bendigo side, when they kicked 2.7 while kicking with the wind. It gave the side a two-point lead at three-quarter time, but it didn’t look to be enough with Hampden kicking with the wind in the final term. It proved to be the case with Hampden kicking the first three goals of the final quarter. Jack Geary won the Derrick Filo Medal as the best player for the Bendigo side. Kyneton pair Rhys Magin and Patrick McCarthy along with Gisborne’s Jack Reaper were all part of the Bendigo side. The result means that Bendigo has won just one of its past four interleague clashes, having suffered two losses to Ballarat Football League in that time. Bendigo Football League action will return this week with Kyneton playing Sandhurst and Gisborne hosting Maryborough.

Sunbury Lions continue to build in the Essendon District Football League women’s competition. After a tough round one match, the Lions have since gone on to play some good football. On Friday night they recorded their fourth win of the season, easily accounting for Roxburgh Park. The Lions had a massive 34 scoring shots in the 14.20 (104)-0.1 (1) win. Speaking before the game, Lions media liaison Emel Ramadan said they were really starting to play some consistent football. “Our numbers are improving, the players have improved too,” she said. “We have a lot of young players and a lot of new players.” Ramadan said the tough first match against Pascoe Vale had been a bit of blessing, as they got a first-hand look at what to expect.
She said with it being a new competition it was a little unknown how the season would play out. “The first week was a shock,” she said. “Some teams are really good and other teams not so great, so that match helped us. We know what to expect and we are aiming to get ourselves to the level we know we have to be.” Ramadan said Sera Catania, Jacinta Taylor and Olivia Cairo were three of the newer players who had made an impact. Jamiee-Lee Wilson and Kelsie Gill are two of the more experienced players who are among the standouts this season. Friday night’s win keeps the Lions only percentage outside the top four after six rounds. Ramadan said they think they can at least be competitive with every side when they are playing their best football. The Lions play Strathmore on Saturday

afternoon. Ramadan said they were also focusing on trying to improve the relationship with the under-18 side, with some junior players making the step up into the senior side. In another boost for the Lions, one of the club’s legends Natasha Hardy has been named vice captain of the Essendon VFLW’s side. Ramadan said Hardy still got down to the Lions when she could to help out. Meanwhile in other EDFL women’s matches, the Sunbury Kangaroos returned to the winners’ list with a big win against Hillside. The Kangaroos won 12.13 (85)-0.1 (1), with Tara Crisp and Regina Said kicking four goals apiece. The Kangaroos, who have a bye this week, sit in the top four with four wins and two losses. By Tara Murray East Sunbury had one of its best wins in the club’s history on Saturday against Coburg Districts, according to coach Steve Grey. While the margin wasn’t a big one, Grey was happy with how his team responded in the second half after not making the most of their opportunities during the first half. The Thunder trailed by 21 points at the main break, despite having just one less scoring shot for the half. They turned it on in the second half, kicking the first eight goals of the half and in total nine of the 10 second half goals, to win 11.17 (83)-7.10 (52). Grey said they could have quite easily been a lot closer at the main break. “They had 10 scoring shots and we had nine,” he said. “We had as much of the footy as them, but we were turning the ball over and missing targets. “We were fumbling under pressure. We then found another gear.” Grey said the most pleasing thing was how they stepped things up in the second half. He said previously they may not have been able to get back into the game. “We worked on the pressure when they had the footy,” he said. “They kicked one goal and it was about the 20 minute mark of the last quarter, that was really pleasing. “Overall it was a very good team effort over four quarters.” Grey said the difference was having a bit more experience, with players like Jorden Braddy and Brad Bernacki making an impact. He said with the extra depth at the club it was hard each week to pick the side. Grey said Kamen Ogilive, Shane Lindsay and Caine Schofield were the side’s best in the win. Jamerson Campbell kicked three goals. The Thunder sits on top of the ladder after seven rounds and having played every side once. They are percentage ahead of second placed Moonee Valley, but have already opened up a three game gap on fifth. “We still have things to work on and we’re getting better and better,” Grey said. “I put pressure on myself at the start of the season saying we had to make finals. “We should start looking at finishing top two now. “We need to not sit back, we need to push harder and try and get a second chance. “It’s about keeping the players fresh and healthy and we will be in a good spot.” In other results, Northern Saints defeated Burnside Heights and Roxburgh Park upset Moonee Valley. 22 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 22, 2018

Calder Cannons fell short in the TAC Cup against Northern Knights on Saturday afternoon at Rams Arena, Craigieburn. The Knights flew out of the blocks and led by 24 points at quarter-time, before the Cannons reduced the margin to nine points at the main break. The Knights stayed ahead in the third quarter and outscored the Cannons in the last to win, 8.12 (60)-5.9 (39). Curtis Taylor, who kicked two goals, was the Cannons’ best. The Cannons return to Rams Arena again on Saturday to face the Greater Western Rebels. The game starts at 2.15pm

The Sunbury Jets had a strong win against McKinnon Cougars in Big V women’s state championship division on Sunday. The Jets’ second quarter proved to be the winning one as they outscored the Cougars 26-15 in that period. They went on to win 88-78. Irish import Orla O’Reilly top-scored with 22 points and four of the Jets’ starting five scored double figures. The win means the Jets rise to fourth on the ladder. The Jets’ men’s division 1 side lost to Melbourne Black Angels 85-50. The Jets were outscored in every quarter. Captain Jacob Formosa was the side’s top scorer with 15 points. Riddell league’s players overcome a determined CHFL The Riddell District Football League just held off the Central Highlands Football League in a tight WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships match on Saturday. The RDFL side travelled to Ballarat for the match and came home with the silverware, but they didn’t have it all their own way, with the CHFL fighting all the way and the game going down to the final whistle. Despite being outscored in the final quarter, the RDFL held on to win 9.13 (67)-9.10 (64). RDFL coach Arron Bray said he was confident that his side could get the job done. Several players picked in the original squad pulled out, with the league having to add players.
“They bought in 100 per cent and I’m always confident with the calibre of players in the league,” Bray said. The RDFL has played in several close interleague matches in recent years and Saturday was no different. Bray said his players had chances to break the game open, but the CHFL kept coming. “I thought we had the ascendency early on, but we couldn’t get a break on them,” Bray said. “They came back at us and led by eight points at half-time. “We put it on the midfielders at half-time and we took the game to another level in third. “We didn’t put enough scoreboard pressure on, but slowly took it away from them.”
With plenty of onballers in the squad, the RDFL had the legs to ensure the win. Bray said the one concern about their side was the lack of key forwards. Rupertswood’s Todd Podolczak was the only notable goalkicker in the team and the only player from the league’s top 10 goalkickers included. Bray need not have worried – Podolczak kicked six goals and was awarded the best-on-ground medal. “We gave him the 50 to play in with plenty of space,” Bray said. “We kept saying to him to lead up, as ‘Gunna’ [full-back Mark Gunnell] wouldn’t be able to go with him.
“He’s pretty quick across the ground and there’s not many defenders his height who can stay with him.” The other standouts for the RDFL were Tom Waters, Ayden Tessari, Brent Swallow and Shaun Stewart. Bray said that every player did the job they were assigned. It was the third straight year in which the CHFL has lost its interleague match by less than a goal. The under-18 interleague match between the two sides went to extra time with the RDFL getting a 12.12 (84)-9.7 (61) win. Tara Murray

Gutsy BFL fades at last By Tara Murray The Ballarat Football League players ran out of legs against Goulburn Valley Football League in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships on Saturday. The game, one of the marquee games of the championships, was played on the MCG, with the crowd presented with a high-quality, high-scoring encounter. The BFL looked to have control on several occasions, before the GVFL responded late in each quarter. No more than three goals separated the two teams during the first three quarters. The GVFL found another level in the last quarter, with Brandyn Grenfell providing a target up forward. The GVFL side kicked seven final-term goals to win 20.8 (128)-16.10 (106). BFL coach Shaun O’Loughlin said his side played well for most of the game and it was only the final five minutes that the game slipped away. “It wasn’t through a lack of effort from our boys,” he said.
“We had as much of the footy as they did … we had our chances, we used the ball pretty well and defended pretty well in the second half to keep ourselves in the game.” Bacchus Marsh forward Ben Speight was named the BFL’s best in the loss. He kicked eight goals. Speight, who is in his first year at the Cobras, had previously played on the MCG. “I played Foxtel Cup with VFL, which was a great opportunity, but I never thought I’d get another opportunity to be back out there again,” he said after the match. “I was a bit lucky it went my way and I was really happy with my efforts, but it was unlucky for the team.” Speight said he relished the opportunity to play interleague. “It’s the best players in the competition and the best in the GVFL. “To have that opportunity that most of the leagues in the state buy into … I think it’s fantastic.” Speight was named in the BFL’s best, along with Brian Graham, Steven Kennedy, Tony Lockyer and Grant Valles.
Valles, the Sunbury Lions’ utility, represented the league in 2016 against the Western Region Football League, but said it was a different feeling this year because the MCG was the venue. “It was a fantastic experience,” he said. “Every boy dreams of playing on the MCG. While it wasn’t the result we wanted, it will definitely be one to put in the memories. “Everyone was up and about for this one a little bit more than usual. Shaun [O’Loughlin] came in with a great game plan, but unfortunately it didn’t come off in the end.” Valles, who has been the hero for the Lions in front of goal this season, took to the other end of the field for the BFL. “I’ve played back all my life, so it wasn’t too bad,” he said. “It’s good to be able to play both positions. I started OK, but there’s probably some things I still need to work on. But overall, I was pretty happy to slot in the back line.” Valles said he would love to play for the league again, and hopefully get a win next time. “It was fantastic to get back in the squad with high-quality individuals,” he said. “You learn so much.”
The Riddell District Netball League overcame a slow start to take out a second straight win in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships, beating Central Highlands Netball League on Saturday. It wasn’t the start the RDNL was after and it found itself trailing by 10 goals early against a side that was well drilled. The RDNL made changes across the court and slowly worked itself into the game and in front. Once in front in the last quarter, the RDNL stayed there, winning 45-43. RDNL coach Ciara Stewart said it was obvious that the CHNL had spent a bit of time training together. She said her side was stoked with the win. “They have been training together twice a week for four weeks and knew how to play each other,” Stewart said. “We had seven good players individually on the court, but it took us a long time to play with each other.” Stewart, who also took on playing duties when Chloe Wilson had to withdraw, said once they got the right combinations and figured out each others’ games, they were fine. One change was the move of Stewart into goals at quarter-time to give the side a moving goal circle. “They had a goal keeper that is taller than any player in our league,” Stewart said. “We needed a quick moving circle, so Bec [Morabito] and I played together as two short goalers. “We did a lot of passing off and protecting to get some good shots.” Another major move was the change-up of the mid court in the middle of the game, which happened when Chelsea Kemp went off injured. Stewart said they had been talking about making a switch before Kemp hyper extended her knee. The injury meant Caitlyn Alifraco went into wing attack, Karlee De Bono into centre and Anica Scherer into wing defence. Bec Morabito was awarded the best on court medal for the RDNL, shooting 31 goals for the game. “It would have been super hard to pick someone from our team, as no one stood out. Everyone played their role, but no one was awesome. “Bec shot 90 per cent of our goals, so she deserved it.” The RDNL’s under-17 team also defeated CHNL, winning 36-22.
