The company has been unable to use the Boilerhouse Theatre for almost a year because of safety risks. There have been community concerns about the condition of the heritage buildings at Jacksons Hill since Victoria University stopped using the site as a university campus in 2009. The mostly vacant and boarded-up buildings have been deteriorating, and repeatedly vandalised. Hume councillor Jack Medcraft said he was happy the site was finally being sorted out, but was interested to find out details of how the buildings would be restored and maintained.
Mum’s the word for special day Sunbury’s Caitlin Hiam will celebrate her first of many Mother’s Days on Sunday. She’s looking forward to her partner bringing her breakfast in bed and the other surprises that he says are in store for her. The Sunbury couple welcomed Oliver five months ago. Ms Hiam said the start of motherhood had been “very challenging, but very rewarding”. “Even on the hardest days you catch one little smile and forget how tired you are and just fall in love all over again,” she said. Action is finally being taken to bring life back to Sunbury’s beloved Jacksons Hill. Premier Daniel Andrews and Sunbury MP Josh Bull last week announced the state government would buy the site. “There’s a long history here, but the future of this site must belong to the local community,” Mr Andrews said. “And ownership by the government guarantees that.” Mr Andrews said the state would take over the site and work with the community to restore and repurpose its various sectors. “There’s more conversation to be had about other uses, repurposing, getting the balance right within this unique precinct,” he said. Three million dollars was allocated in the recent state budget for a new community arts and creative industries precinct at Jacksons Hill, and $10.8 million to repurpose some of the buildings for the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School to expand. Other plans for the site will be detailed in the release of a master plan in the coming months. A draft plan, released on November 30, was met with criticism from the community and Hume council. Residents slammed the proposal for space in the site’s east and west to be used for housing. Hume council also released scathing feedback on the draft plan in February, emphasising that the proposal for a new secondary school at Jacksons Hill was “conflicting with the key themes from the community engagement sessions”. Mr Bull last week told Star Weekly:
“It’s unrealistic to expect that there won’t be any housing on the entire site – especially the open space”. He also indicated that the state government would likely go ahead with plans for a future school. Road networks and parking would also be improved. “A secondary school will be something we’re certainly going to consider,” Mr Bull said.

Brigade tries to stop fire sale By Serena Seyfort Romsey and District Fire Brigades Group is calling for help to stop the sale of its headquarters. The District 2 group says that it, along with the community groups who use the building, will be homeless once the station is sold. Group officer Ralph Hermann said the headquarters are being sold because Romsey CFA brigade had received a new station nearby. But he said the new station did not provide space for the group’s vehicles, and that the
headquarters were “still very much in use”. The headquarters service Bolinda and Monegeetta, Clarkefield, Darraweit Guim, Lancefield, Romsey and Springfield CFA brigades. They’re also used by the Romsey Lancefield Red Cross, Lancefield Romsey Lions Club and various other community groups. Mr Hermann said the groups would “be homeless or held to ransom having to lease or rent space in the community” once the headquarters are sold. He said the fire brigade group was also concerned the community had invested in

the facility, but proceeds of the sale would not necessarily be used locally. “The extension of the group HQ was facilitated by a significant contribution from the Ash Wednesday Fund from the Macedon shire council,” he said. “It is the opinion of the group
that the sale of this property is short-sighted and a blatant misuse of community [Ash Wednesday] funds.” The Romsey group has called on Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas to help stop the sale. A CFA spokesperson told Star Weekly the CFA had “constructed a new fire station for the Romsey Brigade and Romsey Group in 2014 at a cost of approximately $1.7 million”. “In line with CFA’s obligations, the old station has been declared surplus and will be disposed of, with proceeds funding ongoing infrastructure projects,” the spokesperson said.

Station upgrade a long time coming Firefighters at Mount Macedon CFA are celebrating a $1.6 million win for the Mount Macedon community. The Mount Macedon Road fire station is set to be renovated after $1.6 million in funding was allocated to the project in last week’s state budget. Brigade captain Jim Darby said the brigade would be far better placed to serve the community with the renovations in place. “The station upgrade will give us a much safer

where the volunteers can change into uniform, rather than dressing next to the trucks as they currently do. The design for the renovation has come from a group of Melbourne University architecture students who have attempted to enhance the station’s operational capability. The station has not been developed since before the Ash Wednesday fires.
Petitions for more carparking in Gisborne’s township are being circulated by Gisborne Roads and Transport Group in response to calls from residents and businesses. The advocacy group has placed petition forms in a number of Gisborne businesses, including supermarkets, the vet and cafes, requesting that Macedon Ranges council build parking spaces and develop a long-term plan for the town. The petition document specifically calls for “the creation of a long-term parking precinct plan for Gisborne CBD” and the construction of parking spaces in the short term, using the $600,000 the council received from the sale of land to Aldi. Gisborne Road and Transport Group chairman Russell Mowatt said the petition was started after the group was “inundated with requests from residents, businesses and the many visitors to our town for additional parking spaces within the Gisborne CBD” for months. Secretary Michelle Minchew said Gisborne’s growth meant people were living further from the CBD and had no choice but to drive into the town for its services. She said the lack of available parking had “reached the point that something must be sanctioned immediately”. Players’ play on words The Mount Players theatre company is inviting locals to soak up the emotions of A.R. Gurney’s tragi-comic Love Letters. The play tells the complicated story of two lifelong friends who are true loves on paper. The two characters of Andrew and Melissa will be played by Sunbury’s Darren Gregor and Jackie Harvey, who are no strangers to the Mount Players stage. Gregor is also well known in the wider Melbourne theatre circuit. He is dedicating his performance in Love Letters to his parents, Robert and Helen, who
met as pen pals. Harvey has had roles on television, and said she is delighted to be performing in the challenging role of Melissa, directed by her father, Frank Harvey. Mr Harvey has directed dozens of plays throughout his 25 years involved in theatre. He said Love Letters was one of his favourites. Cash splash on sports facilities By Serena Seyfort The replacement of Bulla Village Tennis Club pavilion has been given priority in Hume council’s draft seven-year plan to upgrade sporting pavilions. Four Sunbury sporting facilities have also been chosen for upgrades in 2019-20 in the council’s draft Sports Pavilion Plan 2018 and Outdoor Sports Lighting Policy and Plan 2018.
The council allocated $18 million towards upgrading and constructing sports pavilions over the next four years in its draft 2018-19 budget. Another $3.8 million has been proposed to upgrade lighting at sports grounds across the next four years. Mayor Geoff Porter said the council was seeking to improve community health and wellbeing. “These upgrades will ensure improved
access for all, particularly with the inclusion of female-friendly amenities, which will go a long way in supporting local female sport participation,” Cr Porter said. The draft Sports Pavilion Plan lists Bulla Village Tennis Club pavilion as of high priority for replacement and schedules its design and build for 2019-20. Extension and upgrade of the second pavilion at Sunbury’s Boardman Reserve has
also been listed as a high priority, with design and the start of construction scheduled for 2020-21. Under the draft sports lighting plan, a pitch at Sunbury’s Langama Park Reserve, an oval at John McMahon Reserve and Sunbury Recreation Reserve’s outdoor netball court will get new lighting in 2019-20. The council is taking feedback on both plans until May 30, and will hear submissions at a meeting on June 4.

Romsey’s Blake Meyer ranked in the top 10 in the Australian woodchopping championships last month. Meyer placed ninth in the Timbersports Australian Champions Trophy 2018, held in Sydney in April. Making it a family affair, his cousin also made it into the top 10. The placing adds to Meyer’s accolades for this year – he is also the current state champion for tree climbing-woodchopping. Meyer won all three divisions at the Victorian Tree Climbing Champions, which involves
chopping three metres up a tree. The Romsey resident has been competing in woodchopping since he was eight. The family tradition was passed on to him, with his grandfather, father and brother having all been competitive woodchoppers. Sunbury Road works slammed By Serena Seyfort Calls for the state government to fix the traffic congestion at Sunbury Road are ramping up. The pressure comes after funds to duplicate part of the road, between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest Road, were allocated in last week’s state budget. Stakeholders in the Sunbury community say duplicating the road near Sunbury will only create “an upgrade to a bottleneck” at Bulla. Hume councillor Jack Medcraft, who has been advocating for improvements on the road for five years, said while he was “very happy”
about investment in the road, the upgrade would be pointless on its own. “We’ll take anything we can get,” Cr Medcraft said. But he said duplicating the road was “not going to solve anything” if another bridge was not built alongside Bulla Bridge, which only has two lanes crossing Deep Creek. “It will create a massive build-up of traffic to go down a hill.” Residents have similarly taken to Facebook to complain that congestion will remain at Bulla. “Four lanes will still become two over
the bridge at Bulla,” one resident posted on Facebook. “It is an upgrade to a bottleneck,” said another. Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn last week in Parliament asked the government to review its decision and instead duplicate Sunbury Road between Bulla and the Tullamarine Freeway. He pointed out that sections of Sunbury Road, between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest Road – where the government has announced future duplication – are already duplicated. Hume mayor Geoff Porter said the council
was “rapt with the delivery of the widening of Sunbury Road” but would continue to push for the duplication of Bulla Bridge and Sunbury Road between Bulla-Diggers Rest Road and Melbourne Airport in the lead-up to the state election. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said the planned duplication of Sunbury Road was important for achieving the best outcome. “I am thrilled after many calls for action Sunbury Road will be duplicated,” Mr Bull said. He said he would continue to advocate for future projects on the road.
Pink power for players Romsey’s footy field and netball courts will be a sea of pink on Saturday for Romsey Football Netball Club’s eighth annual Pink Day. Instead of the club’s usual red and black uniform, players will wear a dedicated pink and black version to support the Breast Cancer Network Australia. The fundraiser’s committee – ‘The Pinkateers’ – is also once again hosting an afternoon tea for more than 100 women to raise money for the breast cancer foundation. Pinkateer Hope Evans said tickets for the afternoon tea sold out without the club even advertising the event. She said the community’s consistent support for the annual fundraiser was terrific. At the event, local women will share how breast cancer has affected their lives. Pinkateer Rachel Whitehead will donate 40centimetres of her hair to be used to make

Lions come from behind to defeat reigning premier Sunbury Lions have pulled off an upset win against Darley to take their record to 3-0 in the Ballarat Football League. Facing the reigning premier, the Lions had to fight all day and came from 17 points down in the second half to get the win. Grant Valles was the hero for a second straight week, kicking the sealer in the 9.9 (63)-9.8 (62) win. Lions’ coach Ben Jordan said he was rapt with the win in a game which could have gone either way. In the same game last season, the Devils came from behind to win by one point. “It was a real nailbiter and we were lucky to pinch it in the end,” Jordan said.
“We were 17 points down in the last quarter and then kicked the last three goals of the game to get up. “We hadn’t played great footy all day, but once we were behind the guys rolled the dice. “The situation changed and it got things going a little bit.” Jordan said Valles, who kicked two goals in the last quarter, had the belief in himself to stand up in the important moments of games. He kicked the last two goals in the Lions’ win against Melton South the week before. “Everyone gets tired towards the end of games and you get more isolated contests,” Jordan said. “Everyone has faith in Grant and know they can give him the ball.”
Jordan said Mitch Conn was best on ground, with his clean hands and quality ball work a standout. He said Reece Wood and Lachlan Bramble were also strong, while the work of skipper Andrew Duhau was invaluable. “His leadership late in the game was really important,” he said. “He stood up and put his body on the line. “He keeps the players believing.” Alik Magin kicked three goals for the Lions. The win leaves the Lions one of two teams with a 3-0 record and one of three teams undefeated. The Lions could have quite easily been 1-2 having won two close matches.
The Lions face Melton this week, before two weeks off due to interleague and the bye. Jordan said they were hopeful of getting the win on Saturday night at Clarke Oval, to finish off the first part of the season on a good note. Aaron Christensen could miss the Melton game having left the field against the Devils with a hamstring injury. Jordan said he would be assessed. Jack Sheahan, who missed Saturday’s game, won’t be back until after the bye due to a hamstring injury. In A-grade netball, the Lions also remain undefeated, after beating the Devils 62-24. It was a dominant display from Epping, as it scored three goals in the first half, before adding two more to romp home to a 5-0 win. The loss means Sunbury slips to third behind Upfield. In state league 5 west, Gisborne had a 3-1 win against Barwon. Gisborne led 2-1 at half-time, before scoring the sealer in the second half. Jake McIntyre scored twice, with Joseph Cavoli scoring the other goal for Gisborne. Gisborne sits atop the ladder, but has played one more match than second-placed Westside Strikers.

Tigers take local derby By Tara Murray Kyneton lifted a level in the second half to come away with a hard-fought win against arch rival Gisborne in the Bendigo Football League. The match between the only two Macedon Ranges teams in the league has often provided some good contests, and Saturday was no different The Bulldogs had the better of the match in the first half, before the Tigers found their form in the second half, to seal the 17.6 (108)-12.9 (81) win. Tigers coach Luke Beattie said the local derby was a game they loved coming out on top. “You always open the fixture when it comes out and look for that first game against Gisborne,” he said. “Quite often the result goes the other way. It’s nice to get the job done and we’ve been able to do that a few times lately.” Beattie said the first half wasn’t good from their perspective and they were lucky to have a one point lead at the main break. 24 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 8, 2018
He said the Bulldogs had been the better team to that point. “We didn’t play to the level that was expected,” he said. “Gisborne played the first half pretty well. Their speed and enthusiasm came to the forefront. “They were unlucky not to be two to three goals up at half-time.” Beattie said they had a discussion at half-time about what they valued and the reaction was exactly what the coaches were after. The Tigers kicked eight goals to four for the quarter, to lead by 22 points at three-quarter time. “We should have been up by eight goals at three-quarter time,” Beattie said. “Our last quarters haven’t been our best and we are building on that. “We’re a bit inconsistent at the moment in games. It’s good to get the win.” Chris Barry kicked three goals and was named best on ground. Josh Govan, Billy Mahony and Harrison Huntley were the other
standouts for the Tigers according to Beattie. The win is the Tigers second for the season, and gives them a 2-1-1 record after the first four rounds. Beattie said they could have quite easily been sitting 4-0, with all the new players having an impact straight away. “There’s some poor decision making at times,” he said. “We had every right to win the first game [which was a draw]. “The game against Strathfieldsaye last round was there to win. “It’s two or three poor decisions at the wrong time. “We should be 3-1 at worse. We could have been 4-0.” Meanwhile, the Bendigo Football League has announced its senior training squad for the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships. The BFL will face Hampden Football League. Kyneton’s Rhys Magin, Patrick McCarthy and Max O’Sullivan have been named in the squad, along with Gisborne’s Jack Reaper.
East Sunbury’s winning start to the Essendon District Football League division 2 season is over. After winning their first four matches, the Thunder fell short against Moonee Valley, which also entered the match undefeated. The Magpies jumped out of the blocks and led by 21 points early and extended that to 30 points at the main break. The Thunder won the second half, but couldn’t bridge the gap enough, losing 10.17 (77)-7.13 (55). Lachlan Brne was the Thunder’s best and it was all single goalkickers for the side. The Thunder, which has a bye this week, slips to second behind Moonee Valley.

The Calder Cannons’ tough season continued with a close loss to Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup Girl’s competition. Just seven goals were scored for the game, with the Stingrays winning 3.9 (27)-4.1 (25). Madison Prespakis kicked two goals for the Cannons and was one of their best. Georgia Patrikios was named the Cannons’ best. Meanwhile, three Cannons players have been named in VFLW sides for this season. After a competition bye at the weekend, the Cannons boys return to the field on Saturday against Bendigo Pioneers. Sharks hold on for win By Tara Murray Rupertswood held strong against a determined Diggers Rest to claim a thrilling win in the Riddell District Football League. It was a match-up between two teams that are expected to be in the mix at the pointy end of the season, and the game didn’t disappoint. The teams went goal for goal in the first quarter, before the Sharks kicked six goals to three to open up a 16-point lead. The Burras lifted a level in the third quarter and dominated play and could quite easily have taken the lead. A goal to the Sharks’ Todd Podolczak after the siren gave them some breathing space at three-quarter time and proved to be a crucial goal. The margin got to within a goal on several occasions in the final quarter, with the Sharks eventually winning 14.11 (95)-14.7 (91). Sharks’ coach Nick Ash said both sides had times when they looked good during the game. “To be sitting 4-0 after four rounds, we’re reasonably happy,” he said. “We looked at the draw when it came out and we play four of the other five top sides from last year. We thought we had a tough draw.” Ash said the likes of Brett Chambers and Matt Smith stood up strongly in defence when needed, especially in the last quarter when the Burras were attacking, Dean Putt was also vital in the last quarter, taking some key marks. Ash said despite Rupertswood being just one of two teams undefeated, there was still plenty of things to work on going forward. “You never like the opposition kicking over 10 goals and they kicked 14 goals, which was a bit disappointing,” he said. “It’s round four and there’s plenty of things to work on.” One area the Sharks will look to address during the week is discipline. They gave away several 50-metre penalties in the second half, and were fortunate it didn’t cost them the game. “I’ll be tough on the boys during the week,” Ash said. “We’re pretty big on discipline on and off the field and we let ourselves down out there. “When the umpires give a free kick, he’s not going to change it, so no use going at them. “We seemed to argue a fair bit today and probably got our right whack.” Keegan Guy is set for a stint on the sidelines after breaking his collar bone, while Cameron McRorie finished the game on the bench with a corkie. In good news for the Sharks, Dean Putt got through his first game since round one, while Lochie Muir and Darragh McGovern got through their first games of the season in the reserves. Ash said there was still another five players who could fit into the senior team. The Sharks face Woodend-Hesket this week. The Hawks are coming off their first loss of the season, losing to Romsey. Other winners this round were Riddell, Wallan, Macedon and Rockbank.

Sunbury’s poor form continues Sunbury Jets’ patchy form has continued, with the Jets losing their third game out of the past four in Big V women’s state championship division. After a better performance last game against Keilor Thunder, the Jets were left to rue a poor third quarter on Sunday against Ringwood Hawks. The Jets led by three points at quarter-time, before the Hawks led by two at the main break. The third quarter saw the Hawks break open the game, scoring 25-10 to increase the lead to 17 points at the last change. The Jets won the last quarter, with their best
quarter of the game, but couldn’t close the gap, losing 75-64. Orla O’Reilly top-scored with 22 points, with Josie Stockill the only other player in double figures. The Jets, though, were missing two of their starters, Monique Stevens and Elyce Penaluna. The loss leaves the Jets sitting 3-4. Meanwhile, the Jets’ men’s side proved no match for Warrnambool Seahawks on Saturday night in division 1. The Seahawks started well and led by 15 points at quarter-time and they were able to extend the lead in the second and third
quarters. The Jets won the final quarter, but the game was already over, with the Seahawks winning 94-72. Te Puao Silver top-scored with 18 points. The youth league side remains undefeated after two wins at the weekend. On Saturday night they defeated Hume City Broncos before backing it up on Sunday against Coburg Giants. Rupertswood played a strong four quarter game to dish out Diggers Rest’s first loss of the Riddell District Netball League season. It was an even first quarter, before the Sharks got out to a six goal lead at half-time. The Sharks looked the better side for much of the third quarter, but the Burras kept themselves in the game. The Sharks stepped it up another level late, to win 47-37. Both sides played high quality netball at times and had high levels of defensive pressure. Turnovers were created by each side, especially in the middle quarters. Sharks’ coach Di McCormack said the key for her side was that every combination of players gelled well. “What I’m happy to see is there’s more of a connection with the girls this year,” she said. “The intensity and work rate is up and if they can keep bringing that each game, then finals are a very good possibility.” McCormack said the defensive pressure across the court was strong for most of the day, allowing them to force turnovers. Abby Gilmore shot well for the Sharks, shooting 26 goals. McCormack said Gilmore had slotted well into the side. She said it gave them three strong shooters – Gilmore, Hayley Mathews and Amy Starzer. At the other end of the court, the Sharks looked strong throughout the game. Lara Keating stood out in her three quarters on the court, with McCormack saying she had taken her game to the next level. “It’s brilliant to see one of the young ones who has come up from our 19s and then to B-grade go the next step. “She probably didn’t get as much court time last season. She’s showed real quality this season.” The win leaves the Sharks sitting 3-1 after four rounds. Their only loss came from the undefeated Macedon side. Having played three of last year’s finalists in the past three rounds, McCormack is rapt with how they’ve started. “They’re working as a unified team and the work rate is there and the intensity has lifted,” she said. “There were a few things in the Macedon game which would have got us over the line. We were in it for a long time. “We didn’t play well enough and we let outside influences impact us and I think that was the difference. “It’s been a good start.” In other results, Macedon remains undefeated after a hard-fought win against Wallan, Romsey smashed Woodend-Hesket, Riddell proved too good for Melton Centrals and Rockbank returned to the winners’ list with a big win against Broadford.
