Four-lane fix unveiled By Serena Seyfort The “long overdue” duplication of Sunbury Road is being funded in the state budget. Sunbury Road will be widened from two to four lanes between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest Road as part of the state’s $2.2 billion Suburban Roads Upgrade. A shared cycling and pedestrian path will also be installed using the funds allocated in today’s Victorian 2018-19 budget. The upgrades come after 13 crashes were recorded on the stretch of road in the five years to July, 2016, leaving one person dead and seven seriously injured, according to VicRoads. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said the upgrades would “slash congestion and improve safety” on the road. “Locals who use Sunbury Road every day know this upgrade is long overdue,” Mr Bull said.

Hume councillor Jack Medcraft has been lobbying for safety improvements at the road for five years after being involved in a near-miss on the major access route between Sunbury and Melbourne Airport. Hume mayor Geoff Porter called for duplication of Sunbury Road about two months ago when the government announced it was installing flexible barriers on the road, between Tullamarine Freeway and Oaklands Road. “Council believes that, ultimately, duplication of Sunbury Road is the best solution to addressing road safety, as well as congestion, on Sunbury Road,” he told Star Weekly in February. Residents have taken to Facebook to complain that the upgrades to Sunbury Road will not be very beneficial while there is no effort to change congestion at Bulla. “Four lanes will still become two over the bridge at Bulla,” one resident posted on Facebook. “[It] just means that you will get to a standstill crawl a bit faster.” “It is an upgrade to a bottleneck,” said another. Residents and Hume council have been campaigning for upgrades to the Bulla section for years. VicRoads data shows that about 21,000 vehicles use Sunbury Road each day.

A local family’s push to install bells or chimes to the historic Woodend Clock Tower has fallen on deaf ears. Father and son Dale and Tim O’Sullivan are campaigning to have an electronic sound system installed inside the tower, which is also the town’s war memorial, using a fund from Peter O’Sullivan, Tim’s grandfather. But the idea has been knocked back by Woodend RSL and Macedon Ranges council. The pair have also requested a plaque acknowledging Peter O’Sullivan be installed at the tower in return for the financial aid. Tim first proposed the idea to the council in January, claiming “the public clock has remained incomplete for 92 years”. He claims that when the Woodend community raised the money to erect the war memorial in the early 1900s, the Woodend Shire did not have enough funds to install the chimes, as was intended. Tim said installing an electronic sound system “would be a wonderful gift … to assist public memory of the fallen etc and to tell the time”. But all 11 Woodend Returned and Service League committee members voted against the idea at one of their meetings, according to president Peter Whitelaw. “Woodend RSL thinks it’s a desecration of the war memorial,” he said, referring to the suggestion of installing a plaque. Mr Whitelaw said his investigation revealed the original design of the tower did not include chimes, and he believed residents would not want the noise. Macedon Ranges council officers have provided similar reasons for why they shut down the proposal, following consultation with Woodend RSL, councillors and the Woodend and District Heritage Society. Council and customer service manager Stephen Mahon said there was a lack of historical evidence supporting the proposal, lack of support from Woodend RSL and lack of demonstrated need for the proposal. He also said it was considered inappropriate to link a significant war memorial with an individual. Hume backs Sunbury projects By Serena Seyfort Continued investment in the construction of the Hume Global Learning Centre on Macedon Street is Sunbury’s big ticket item in Hume council’s 2018-19 budget. The council said it will not pull back on funding Sunbury projects, despite the state Liberal party saying it would remove Sunbury from the Hume municipality if it won the state election. Mayor Geoff Porter said the council was

going ahead with “business as usual” despite the potential change. A total of $5.66 million has been allocated in Hume’s draft budget for the upcoming financial year to continue building the $19 million global learning centre. Another $1.32 million has been allocated for building the centre’s carpark. The centre is expected to be up and running next year. The council plans to put $1.12 million towards the $4.12 million master plan for Sunbury’s McMahon Recreation Reserve.

A start will be made on a $1 million redevelopment of Galaxyland Regional Playspace, at Betula Terrace in Sunbury, with $400,000 allocated for the project in 2018-19. Jacksons Creek Ward residents nominated traffic and parking as the top priority for Hume council in a recent community survey. Mayor Geoff Porter said the council had been advocating for the state and federal governments to duplicate Sunbury Road and Bulla Bypass.

Palmer Road is set for reconstruction as part of the draft budget. “We are meeting our end of the deal to maintain and upgrade our roads,” Cr Porter said. According to the draft budget, Hume rates will increase by 2.25 per cent, the maximum permitted under the government-imposed rate cap. The draft budget was expected to be adopted by Hume council on Monday, April 30, after Star Weekly went to print.

Thousands reflect at dawn service The Mt Macedon Anzac Day dawn service this year drew its biggest attendance since 2015. That’s the word of dawn service committee chairman Bruce Mildenhall, who said everyone involved with the annual event was delighted. “The weather was almost beautiful,” he said.

“And we had very positive feedback about the service.” Mr Mildenhall said he thought the milder than usual weather had generated a bigger crowd than in recent years. He estimated about 2000 people attended last Wednesday’s service. While most people caught free buses to

Macedon Ranges Residents Association is calling for the number of Gisborne and Kyneton sites to be protected and placed under the heritage overlay to be greatly increased. Among the sites missing from Macedon Ranges council’s nominated 38 sites for heritage protection is the oldest building in Gisborne, according to association secretary Christine Pruneau. Built in 1855, St Paul’s Parish Hall, on Fisher Street in Gisborne, was deemed “not worthy” of being included for protection in the council’s Gisborne and Kyneton Heritage Study. Ms Pruneau has asked why the process has been so selective in determining which buildings are to be saved. “Wouldn’t you think the oldest building in Gisborne, with state significance, and the only one left of its kind in Australia, would be a no-brainer for an overlay?” she said. The association is in favour of the council’s intention to put heritage overlay on the sites, which will ensure planning permits would be required for any buildings and works that could affect the heritage significance of the properties. “It’s good news that additional heritage overlays are being included in Macedon Ranges planning scheme,” Ms Pruneau said. “But it’s only 38 of them.” When the heritage study was released for public consultation last month, council chief executive Margot Stork said it was the council’s role “to preserve, celebrate and enhance the region’s cultural heritage”. Mental health boost

North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network has added $780,000 to the $1 million it previously announced for youth mental health funding. The Romsey Lancefield Rotary Club is driving a campaign to establish a Men’s Shed in Romsey. The club is calling for anyone interested in creating a Men’s Shed for the town to join a meeting at the Romsey Community Hub on Friday. President Anne Collins said the project was “a very important step to take for the men of Romsey”. “Men’s Sheds have been proven very successful in improving mental health problems for men and also creating a place for mates to meet up, if only for a cuppa and biscuit, and more importantly, a chat with other men.”

Ms Collins said a local resident had offered to host the shed on his land, while another had donated tools valued about $28,000. She said Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas and Macedon Ranges acting mayor Janet Pearce would open the community forum, at which the community and members of other Men’s Sheds would discuss plans for the Romsey project, including administrative and financial details. School’s Jacksons Hill windfall By Serena Seyfort Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Special School’s Sunbury campus will finally be expanded thanks to a $10.8 million boost from the state budget. The funding is also set to benefit Sunbury’s beloved Jacksons Hill. Education Minister James Merlino and Sunbury MP Josh Bull announced the $10.8 million funding last Thursday as part of the

state’s 2018-19 budget to be unveiled today. Mr Bull said the funding would allow a section of Jacksons Hill, including land and buildings, to be transferred to the specialist school. School principal Joanne Nolan said she was “absolutely thrilled” with the announcement, with expansion of the school having been on the cards for about six years. She said the new space would be used for

classrooms, playspace and, potentially, a specialist service. She said the school was hoping to be able to offer vocational training at the Sunbury campus, where it could be closer to public transport and employment opportunities. Vocational training is currently run at the Bullengarook campus. Mr Bull said the funding would go towards refurbishing buildings at Jacksons Hill for use by the school and also to protecting

and maintaining the location’s heritage assets. Maintenance of the buildings, which are currently owned by Victoria University and remain vacant and deteriorating, has been an increasing point of concern for the Sunbury community. Mr Bull said plans for the rest of Jacksons Hill, contained in a finalised master plan for the site, were expected to be released in a couple of months.

Kyneton CFA fires up Kyneton CFA brigade members are calling for more people to join them helping to keep the community safe. The brigade is looking for men and women aged above 16 years to train as volunteer firefighters. Lieutenant Gareth McIntyre was enthusiastic about the benefits of volunteering with the CFA. “Volunteer membership offers new members fresh challenges as well as a chance to meet new people and give something back to their local community,” he said. “We’ve got basic firefighting training scheduled to start in September, so now is the time to get in contact to be operational before next summer.” He said the average firefighter committed two hours a week for training and another two for operational responses, but the times varied depending on the season. Volunteering opportunities are also available for those interested in assisting with

community education programs, promotions, fundraising and administration. Kyneton presses its kinder case By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges council has decided to push for the construction of a new kindergarten in Kyneton as the town’s existing kinder faces numerous challenges. The council has allocated $200,000 towards the kinder in the draft 2018-19 budget and is hoping for $650,000 in state money to get construction started within that time. The new early learning centre will be built within Kyneton’s education precinct on

Edgecombe Street where the Department of Education has allocated land for a facility to be co-located with the new Kyneton Primary School. The council resolved at its recent meeting to advocate for state and federal funding for the new facility, which it is estimated will cost about $3.7 million. The council heard that the current Lady Brooks Kindergarten and Maternal Child Health Centre on Hutton Street could not take on more children.

Council community services manager Fiona Alexander said reports showed the “ageing facility” had limited capacity for renewal, upgrade and expansion. “In 2018 the kindergarten is operating at full capacity,” Ms Alexander told the meeting. Investigations have found the building contains asbestos and there are concerns about the proximity of the kinder to Kyneton courthouse and police station. Macedon Ranges council’s 2017-18 budget allocated $25,000 for schematic design and

planning of a new early learning centre, as required for grant applications. The council will apply for $650,000 from the Department of Education’s Children’s Facilities Capital Program in the coming months for stage one of the build. It will then continue to push for other state and federal government funding. The council previously sought state funding in November, 2016, to build an early learning centre, but was unsuccessful.

Horseback heroes The dreams of three Sunbury girls came true when they were granted the chance to meet up with police horses and their riders. Chloe, 12, Olivia, 15, and Sally, 12, regularly ride their horses around the streets of Sunbury. Having seen the Victoria Police Mounted Branch also on the streets training police horses, the girls have dreamed of being able to meet them and learn about their work. During the recent school holidays, Sergeant Monika Kusnierz from Victoria Police and her team joined the girls on the streets of Sunbury. Sergeant Kusnierz said the unit sometimes trained its horses to be road-wise in Sunbury because the suburb’s roads were not too busy. Chloe’s mother Sharon O’Rourke said the girls loved the ‘out of the box’ style horse riding, and rode everywhere through Sunbury – including through the KFC and Hungry Jack’s drive-through.

Sunbury South’s population has grown by more than 750 people in the space of a year, according to new Australian Bureau of Statistics data. The population in Sunbury South hit 28,463 at June, 2017, marking an increase of 2.7 per cent, or 757 people, since June, 2016. Together with the rest of Sunbury, where numbers rose by 0.5 per cent, the total population for the suburb was recorded at 41,803 in June last year. Hume mayor Geoff Porter said the council needed to work with state and federal governments to deal successfully with population growth. “We need to properly plan and manage this growth to ensure ongoing liveability,” Cr Porter said. “Council is committed to actions that mean all of our suburbs are liveable and attractive, and that our residents have proper access to services including medical care, jobs, education and transport.” He said future community infrastructure for Sunbury South would be determined once the Victorian Planning Authority’s Sunbury South Precinct Structure Plan was finalised. The new data also revealed that Macedon Ranges’ overall population increased by 1.9 per cent in the 2016-17 year. The statistics show that Gisborne is the fastest-growing Macedon Ranges town, followed by Woodend. Gisborne accounted for just over a third of the 926 new Macedon Ranges residents. The town’s population grew by 2.4 per cent, or 323 people. Woodend grew by 150 people, followed by Kyneton with 134 new residents.

So, yes, vascular disease can be bad. Now, what do we look for on feet or lower legs to alert us to get to a podiatrist post-haste? Experts explain that there are two types of vascular disease – venous (veins) or arterial (arteries). Neither are great. Common signs of a venous ulcer include: • Shallow or superficial appearance • Irregular shape • Small to large • Brownish in appearance • Skin tends to be thick • Painful, usually related to swelling Common signs of an arterial ulcer include: • Punched-out appearance • Smooth wound edges • Cool to the touch • Skin is pale, shiny, taut and thin • Minimal to no hair growth on the limbs • Painful, especially at night Sore feet can change gait and balance, which is especially dangerous for older people who can take serious, sometimes life-threatening falls. Sunbury MP shows he’s a flu hot shot Sunbury MP Josh Bull got his flu shot at Terry White Chemmart Sunbury – much to the delight of staff and locals. He said the Tigers, one of the more experienced sides in the competition, had wanted to assert their authority early on, but it wasn’t to be. “We came back strong, but the lead was too big,” he said. “They outclassed us and were a lot fitter than what we are.” Hall said the positive aspect was awareness of the things that let them down. “There’s a lot of work to do and we learnt a lot from the game,” he said. “It’s mainly fitness-based things and some skill areas. We can work on them at training and hopefully we get the results next week and moving forward.” Hall said midfielders Teagan Ainslie, Emily Taylor and Jenna Davies had good games, along with Natalie Korinfsky, Shannon White and Kylie Munro. Confidence grows as Woodend-Hesket fights for a win Woodend-Hesket revelled in the excitement of a winning feeling after defeating Rockbank in the Riddell District Netball League. Wins have been rare for the A-grade Hawks the past few years – and last season, they defeated only the Sunbury Kangaroos, who failed to win a game. On Saturday, the Hawks went some way to turning their fortunes around by downing the Rams. It was a close contest all day before the Hawks shot 18-12 in the final quarter to seal the 54-49 win. Hawks coach Wendy Roberts said they were keen to get the win after a disappointing showing against the Rams last year. “We always believed that we could beat them,” she said. “We lost by nine goals last year and weren’t physically or mentally ready. This year we were aware of what to expect.” The Rams took a one-goal lead into the final quarter.

Roberts said the Hawks looked at changing the way they drove the ball into the circle and it paid off. “They had a triangle press and they were getting a lot of intercepts,” Roberts said. “We looked to bring it in fast with short, hard passes and that stopped them coming out for the intercept. The girls won the game – I’m only the coach.” Madeline Staresina was named the Hawks’ best after shooting 38 goals. Alexandra Watkins was strong in defence, while Tara Burnip played her best game for the club. Roberts said Burnip, who came across from Macedon, had fitted in well, complementing the side’s attacking end. The only downside for the Hawks was an ankle injury to Brittany Bowen in the first quarter. While the Hawks have only one win from the first three rounds, Roberts said there had been a lot of improvement and confidence was

growing. “They have ignited that internal belief that they can match it with the best,” Roberts said. “We’re happy with how we are progressing … the girls are motivated and seeing that what I’m talking about is working.” The Hawks this week face reigning premier Romsey. The Redbacks drew 37-37 with Melton Centrals on Saturday. Roberts said the Hawks would draw on their victory against Rockbank for inspiration. In other results, Macedon claimed the honours on Anzac Day against Rupertswood, Diggers Rest was too good for Riddell and Wallan defeated Broadford. Tara Murray

Flying Hawks on top By Tara Murray Woodend-Hesket’s good start to the season has continued with the Hawks smashing Rockbank in the Riddell District Football League. Having won their first two matches, the Hawks backed themselves in against the struggling Rams. Having got out to a 38-point lead at quarter-time, the Hawks continued to put the pressure on, as they stormed away to a 31.16 (202)-5.4 (34) win. The Hawks kicked at least seven goals in each quarter. Hawks coach Tom Carland said once they had the win in the bag, they focused more on making sure they did the small things right, instead of the margin. right,” he said. “We didn’t give away any 50s for the day and that’s one thing we had talked about. “We weren’t great with that in the first quarter against Melton Centrals, but we adjusted.” Tom Gawthrop kicked seven goals and Alistair Rae kicked five goals to lead the forwards. Tom Wilson was named the Hawks best, along with Rae. Carland said probably the most pleasing thing from the first three rounds was the way they responded when they found themselves down against Melton Centrals in round two. “The boys brought it up that when sides get on top of us, they bully us. “We’ve worked on the game plan, fitness and respect, and tried to focus on those things. “We’re starting to see the change.” The first year coach said while the results on the field were pleasing, he said the culture off field was starting to change as well.

He said the senior group was getting more involved in other areas of the club. “The senior group is doing the gate before their game, helping out with the meals and coming to junior training,” he said. “We’re starting to see a more professional club.” The Hawks now face Romsey, before the challenges of top sides Rupertswood and Diggers Rest. Carland said they had looked at the first four games as games they needed to win if they were to play finals. The Hawks are one of three teams to win their first three matches and sit on top, while Diggers Rest is also undefeated. In other results, Rupertswood won the grand final rematch on Anzac Day against Macedon, Romsey had to come from behind against Melton Centrals, Diggers Rest won a hard-fought contest against Riddell, Wallan left it late to beat Sunbury Kangaroos and Lancefield got its first win of the season, beating Broadford.

Sunbury United returned to the winners’ list in FFV state league 3 north-west. United scored early through Jayden Mercieca. Williamstown equalled the scores in the 58th minute. Mercieca still had a couple of tricks up his sleeve, scoring in the 82nd minute and then again in the 90th to lead United to a 3-1 win. In state league 5 west, Gisborne won 3-1 against Maidstone United.

Sunbury Lions’ Natasha Hardy has been named Essendon VFLW’s vice captain for the side’s first ever season. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Lions defeated Craigieburn in the Essendon District Football League Women’s competition, winning 4.6 (30)-3.3 (21). The Sunbury Kangaroos lost their first game of the season, losing to Burnside Heights. The Bears won 9.11 (65)-1.5 (11).

Experience shines through as Lions take the points Sunbury Lions overcame a slow start to easily account for Melton South in the Ballarat Netball League. It was an even first quarter, before the reigning premiers stepped it up another level, on the way to a 57-37 win. Lions coach Adam Boldiston said he was happy with the performance after the slow start. He said the experience of his players shone through after quarter-time. “It was a bit surprising that we had a scrappy start,” he said. “I actually gave them a bit of a spray at quarter-time, which I hadn’t had to do before. “Not only defensively, but also our transition was crap and we weren’t seeing the free player. “Once we started to do that in the second quarter, we dominated and we didn’t look back.” Amanda Cusack, who was playing up from B-grade, shot 41 goals from 47 attempts and was named the Lions best player. Boldiston said while B-grade was Cusack’s priority this season, she would play up in

A-grade at times. The match was the first time Cusack and new Lion Tarnee Adams had played together. Adams was a late inclusion for the Lions, giving them another shooting option. Boldiston said Adams would get better as the season goes along. “I’d never met Tarnee before,” he said. “I just saw her name listed on one of those team sheets [for a Victorian mixed team],” he said. “I thought who did I know who knew her and saw Kate Fletcher did. “I contacted Fletch and asked are you keen to come back and do you want to get Tarnee as well and they both came across. “She has played a bit of state league before. “Tarnee improved from last week and shot better for the most part.” The late additions mean that Renee Hulls has stepped back into the B-grade side. The win came despite injuries and Victorian Netball League commitments having an impact. Fletcher and Aila Pera missed the game,

while Elly Randall only played a half. Boldiston said the restrictions and outs meant at times they struggled to find the right connections. The win gives the Lions a 2-0 start, after a hard-fought one goal win against Redan in round one. Boldiston said every match with Redan was a challenge and they would take every win they could. “It was a confidence boosting win,” he said. “We didn’t know what to expect against Redan and we didn’t know against Melton South either. “We were a lot better today.” The Lions this week face Darley, which defeated Melton on Saturday. Solid start for Sunbury By Tara Murray Sunbury Lions have made it two from two with a hard-fought win against Melton South in the Ballarat Football League. The Lions had to find another gear in the second half to get on top of the Panthers for the 13.9 (87)-9.16 (70) win. After an even first quarter, the Panthers dominated the second quarter. Lions coach Ben Jordan said they were lucky to be within 10 points at the main break as the Panthers had 10 more scoring shots. “I think we struggled a bit before half-time, not getting enough of our hands on the footy,” he said. “We were beaten out of the centre and stoppages especially and we weren’t clean when we did win it. “They don’t have that tall target that they usually have when Fev [Brendan Fevola] is playing, so they were trying to invent their goals from the medium players. “I think they had a lot of shots especially in the second quarter and I thought they dominated the second quarter full stop. “We counter attacked a couple of times and scored goals, which was handy, and were still in the game 10 points down at half-time.” Jordan was happy with how his side responded after being challenged. “Probably the second half was the real pleasing thing,” he said. “We took that opportunity with the door still open and the guys lifted their work rate in the second half. “We did tidy up our act in the second half, and I thought we just got in there a little bit harder and started to win the footy. “Once we got it out, we looked pretty good.” The game went down to the dying minutes, as the Panthers came to within a goal. Grant Valles then stood strong in his best period of football this season, kicking 2.1 to seal the win. Jordan said no one really stood out in the win, but he liked the games of Greg Hay, Aaron Christensen, Mick Edwards, Andrew Duhau and Brad Mundy. The win gives the Lions a 2-0 start. Jordan said building a solid foundation was important as they didn’t know what would happen later in the season. The Lions this week face reigning premier Darley, which is coming off a shock loss to Melton. “They will be fired up and they won’t want to lose two games in a row.” The Lions could have a surprise inclusion in the coming weeks, with former player Jack Landt putting in a clearance to return.

Stars last year and he’s as good a small forward as you tend to find going around. “It would be great to have him back on board.”

Jets finally soar to win a close battle Sunbury Jets produced one of their better performances of the season, to get their second win of the Big V men’s division 1 season. In what has been a tough start for the Jets, who have been on the wrong end of some blowouts, they showed fight and determination against Bulleen Boomers. After a poor third quarter left them trailing by 13 points at the last break, the Jets found another level in the last quarter. Outscoring the Boomers 27-15, the Jets won 80-78. Jets coach Ryan Addison said it was a relief to get that second win on the board. He said they thought they may have been in trouble at three-quarter time, but the group stepped it up on the defensive end. “The boys are putting in the work, it’s been about putting it together and getting that consistency. “Gelling together has been a lot of the problem, but bringing in some older guys who have come back like Arthur [Trousdell] and Tips [Te Puao Silver] has helped.” Jonathan Alexander top-scored with 25 points, while skipper Jacob Formosa scored 21 points. Silver, last season’s captain, was a handy contributor in his first game of the season. Addison said everyone contributed on both ends of the court. He said he hoped the win would kickstart their season, despite the challenge ahead of them this week. They face Warrnambool Seahawks, who have regained the services of Australian player, Nathan Sobey. The Jets’ women’s side ended a two game losing streak in the State Championship division. The Jets started well early against Keilor Thunder and were able to get out to a comfortable lead at three-quarter time. Despite losing the final quarter, the Jets won 69-54. The Jets two youth league sides remain undefeated in division 1. The youth league women’s side won 77-49 against Camberwell Dragons and the men’s side won 89-77.
