Garden full of memories An Anzac memorial garden is being unveiled at Sunbury’s Killara Primary School today. The school community will be joined by members of Sunbury Returned and Services League, the Women’s Royal Australian Army Corp and the Australian Women’s Army Service for the unveiling. The memorial, which honours those who served in WWI, is the result of the hard work of three of the school’s teachers and funding from the Anzac Centenary Local Grant Program. Teachers Sarah Round, Kelli Brogan and Robyn Smith designed, organised and helped with the painting and gardening of the memorial. The garden features a mural that depicts the WWI Battle of Lone Pine, a bench seat, two metal soldiers standing to attention and 3D metal poppies scattered throughout the area. Ms Smith said the school’s pupils would spend time at the garden learning about the Anzacs and their plight. “It’s a wonderful area for students and community members to gather and pay their respects,” Ms Smith said. Budget brings rates pain By Serena Seyfort Rates and charges for Macedon Ranges property owners will increase by an average of $89 under the council’s proposed budget for 2018-19. The proposed rise of 4.2 per cent for average rates and charges will encompass both higher costs generated by the global recycling crisis and a rate increase of 2.25 per cent. The council plans to significantly increase the waste service charge – which is separate from rates – to cope with the higher charges from
waste collectors following China’s decision in January to raise its standards for the quality of recyclables it accepts. The council has been covering those costs in the short term, but is planning to pass future costs on to residents. The new waste charge will likely result in a $49 yearly rise in kerbside collection charges for the average ratepayer. The council is in the process of negotiating a new contract for waste collection, but said the increased waste charge reflected the market cost of having kerbside waste collected, transported, treated and recycled.
On top of the waste charge hike, the council proposes to increase rates by the maximum amount permitted under the legislated rate cap of 2.25 per cent. In the past financial year, owners of property with an average value of $584,026 paid $2105 in rates and charges. Under the proposed budget that will rise to $2194. The council will generate almost $48.4 million from rates, municipal charge and waste service charges under the 2018-19 budget – almost $2.5 million more than in the past year. But the council’s expenditure on materials
and services will increase by $1.5 million, predominantly because of the recycling issue. The council’s salaries and wages will increase by $900,000, which is being mostly attributed to enterprise bargaining agreement wage rises and salary band increases. Staff numbers are expected to remain at a similar level to those of 2017-18. The council is taking feedback on the draft budget until May 22. School ‘ecstatic’ over funding By Serena Seyfort The Gisborne Primary School community is celebrating a $10 million windfall in next month’s state budget. The school is one of four Macedon Ranges’ schools that last week found out it would get a boost from the 2018-19 Victorian budget. Gisborne Primary School principal Julie Soutter said the school community was “absolutely ecstatic” that it was going to be able to accommodate more local families. The $10 million will go towards demolishing the school’s current gym,
replacing it with a new competition-grade gym and building more classrooms. Ms Soutter said she was surprised by how much funding the school was receiving after it received just $1.6 million in the previous state budget. She said the extra classrooms would greatly benefit the 489-pupil school, which was “running out of space”. The school is expected to reach capacity next year or by 2020. “We’re almost having to turn people away,” Ms Soutter said. In Romsey, $3.2 million will be put into

upgrading facilities and investigating adding years 7, 8 and 9 to Romsey Primary School. Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School will receive $4.2 million to refurbish and extend the administration building at Bullengarook Senior Campus and to construct a new multi-purpose room and art shed.
Riddells Creek Primary School will get $2.2 million for upgrades. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the funding announcements on Friday marked “an incredibly exciting day for local students, families and teachers”. “We’re upgrading and rebuilding schools right across the Macedon Ranges to make sure our hard-working students and teachers have access to the best classrooms and best facilities,” she said. The schools will work with the Victorian School Building Authority to determine the details of their upgrades.
Help to cut through the rubbish
The owners of a private garden at Mount Macedon are opening their autumnal wonderland to the public this month to raise funds for a local charity. Visitors are invited to picnic and play among the autumn leaves at the 10 acre-garden ‘Viewfield’. A $10 entry fee for adults will be donated to not-for-profit organisation Shared Table, which assists those in need. Children are admitted free. Dogs are welcome on a lead. Ways to produce less household waste will be discussed in Woodend next week. The free information session is being held by Macedon Ranges council as part of its push to help residents reduce the amount of waste and recyclables they produce. The council’s Zero Waste Forum, to be held on Thursday, May 3 will feature zero waste advocate Erin Rhoads. Ms Rhoads will share a range of practical and useful ideas about becoming plastic and waste free. Data from the council’s kerbside collection service has revealed the amount of waste produced per Macedon Ranges household in 2016-17 was 12.2 kilograms higher than in 2016-15. Last year the average household in the shire produced 505 kilograms of general waste. Recyclables rose by 16.3 kilograms per house in 2016-17, and garden waste rose by 36.5 kilograms per house. In recent months the council has been encouraging residents to reduce what they put in their bins, on the back of a global recycling crisis which has seen costs for disposing of recyclable material rise. Help spread the music A Gisborne primary school music teacher is seeking support to help the school expand its music horizons. Gisborne Montessori’s music teacher Charlotte Roberts is asking the community for both funding and labour to help build “inclusive instruments” and repair the school’s existing instruments. Ms Roberts said a recent visit to the school by music teacher Jon Madin and his unique, inclusive instruments had inspired pupils. “They were so full of joy, play and bliss, I knew that it was important to get them their own set as soon as possible to keep building
that sense of wonder and hope for a musical and playful future.” Ms Roberts wants to build marimbas, echo-cellos and ding boxes, which allow young children without musical skills to be part of a group musical experience. Budget big on community assets By Serena Seyfort Significant funding has been allocated to improving community buildings and sporting facilities in Macedon Ranges council’s draft budget for 2018-19. The council also plans to get more projects off the ground with help from government funding, such as the regional sports fields in New Gisborne and a new early learning centre in Kyneton. Chief executive Margot Stork said the council was “continuing to invest heavily into renewing and upgrading existing assets”.
“We are also creating opportunities to work with state and federal government on new infrastructure needs for our community,” Ms Stork said. More than $1.9 million is earmarked to renew council buildings – almost $1 million more than has been invested in the past year. Under the proposed budget, work on Macedon Ranges roads would receive $6.62 million and $715,000 would go towards constructing footpaths. While also seeking funding from state and federal governments, the council will commit $500,000 to starting the Woodend to Hepburn
rail trail, $500,000 for the sportsfields project in New Gisborne and $850,000 for an early learning centre in Kyneton. Funding has been allocated to a number of sporting projects, including $650,000 for Gisborne’s Gardiner Reserve changerooms and $400,00 for lighting at Kyneton’s Barkly Square. Other investments would include $35,000 to investigate a cat curfew and dog on and off-lead areas, and developing a Reconciliation Plan and Disability Action plan. The draft budget proposes to increase the number of free-of-charge meetings
in council-owned meeting rooms for not-for-profit community groups to 12 a year. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said feedback on the draft budget would be taken until May 22. “We will consider all submissions and listen to anyone who wishes to be heard in support of their submission,” Cr Anderson said. “Changes may be made to the final version and if that’s not possible, the comments may influence the development of future projects.” The final budget will be adopted at the council meeting on June 13. Open for business Twenty-five artists from Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges are banding together to showcase the region’s artistic talent over the next three weekends. The artists will invite the public into their studios in unison for the sixth annual Daylesford Macedon Ranges Open Studios program. Mosaic artist Kathryn Portelli is looking forward to welcoming guests into her Pipers Creek studio. Portelli has been working with mosaics for 18 years, and has contributed a number of public art projects to the Macedon Ranges. She is responsible for the Black Saturday mural at Kyneton Town Hall and murals at Lady Brooks Kindergarten, Sacred Heart Secondary College, Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School, Gisborne Primary School and Newham Primary School.
Visitors to her studio will be able to see demonstrations of her technique and the smaller mosaic pieces and wearable art she will have on sale. Call to keep community asset By Serena Seyfort A group of Macedon residents is campaigning for a vacant council building to be retained and developed into a community facility or neighbourhood house. The group has been pushing for the idea since hearing of the council’s decision in February to sell the former maternal and child health property at 47 Victoria Street, Macedon.
While the group missed the 28-day period to provide feedback on the decision, the council has said it would still consider the group’s submission when deciding about the sale but has rejected requests to extend the consultation period, which closed on April 9. The group of about 80 residents from Macedon and Mount Macedon want the council to keep the building to become a community asset. Macedon mother Anastasia Clunies-Ross
is one of the residents advocating that the building be used for a community purpose, such as a men’s shed, bike school or neighbourhood house. “It’s sad that Macedon doesn’t have any sort of council or community or neighbourhood centre,” Ms Clunies-Ross said. She said most other Macedon Ranges towns had a community place, which Macedon was without, despite interest from the close-knit community.
The group has a range of ideas for the space, including a playgroup room, tutoring space and location for youth services. Ms Clunies-Ross said the general feeling among the group was that if the council decided to go ahead and sell the property, profit from the sale should be put back into a project for Macedon. The council will make a decision on whether to sell the property at its next meeting on May 23.
Sunbury’s the heart of art Sunbury Art Society is eagerly preparing to host its 33rd annual show over the first weekend of May. Society president Ken Winnell and treasurer Jane Alder, who are both painters, will be among the local artists exhibiting their masterpieces at Sunbury’s Boilerhouse Gallery. The society is inviting the community to come and enjoy the works of its members. Entry to the exhibition will be free on Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6, from 10am-4pm. New laws to clear the air By Serena Seyfort A new local law that would limit the height of objects and activities allowed on properties near Kyneton Airfield is being proposed by Macedon Ranges council. The law is being put before the community nearly a year after safety concerns about a lack of protection for the airfield and airspace were raised. The council is proposing to introduce height restrictions for potential obstructions such as trees, cranes, poles, antennas and lights.
Landowners and occupiers near the airfield would be subject to height restrictions ranging between 17 and 45 metres, depending on their location. In May last year, Kyneton Aeroclub vice-president Warren Canning said the height of a tree plantation on the airfield’s northern border was of “immediate concern”. At the time, he told Star Weekly the height of the trees would soon exceed national safety guidelines. Unlike larger airports, Kyneton Airfield does not have any mandatory safety measures
for flight hazards. The onus to impose the measures falls on its owner – Macedon Ranges council. The council began investigating the issue last year and moved to propose the new law at a meeting in October. Residents and businesses can submit feedback on the proposed law until Friday, May 18. The daughter of a woman who was killed in Sunbury two years ago is expressing her grief through her artwork. Sunbury artist Elly-Louise Tyquin will this week launch her exhibition The Unfurling of Grief, presenting her physical reaction to loss, Grief at Trocadero Art Space in Footscray. Tyquin’s work deals with the sudden death of her mother Rachel Tyquin, who was 44 years old when she was stabbed to death in Sunbury in 2016. “I decided to explore and express my pathway with grief through my art practice as a way of understanding death,” Tyquin said. Teamwork lights the way Players from Woodend-Hesket Football Netball Club and Woodend-Hesket Masters Football Club are celebrating the installation of new lights at their oval and courts. Both clubs helped fundraise for the lighting upgrade at Woodend’s Gilbert Gordon Reserve. The new lights have been installed using a $100,000 grant from the state government’s 2016-17 Country Football Netball Program, a $205,000 contribution from Macedon Ranges council and $70,000 from the oval’s users. The Masters club, consisting of about 40 footballers aged over 35, raised $15,000 for the project through events, such as a comedy night. The football-netball club seniors raised $70,000 under the guidance of club life member Eddie Tunn. The new lights will enable the clubs to host night games for both football and netball. Both clubs said they were looking forward to establishing their games as bigger events in the community. The first home games were played at Gordon Gilbert Reserve last Saturday. Parking and the railway crossing are definitely Sunbury`s biggest problems. Retailers could offer a bigger and better range if people could park and shop in the town. If you could change anything about the town, what would it be?
I think a new railway station inbound from Melbourne between Diggers Rest and I love the communication the town seems to Sunbury with at least 10 times more parking have and the history within Sunbury. He covers just enough of the history and background without getting bogged down in detail. Just as interesting is his advice on buying ingredients and the tale behind his journey to becoming a self-confessed “kimchi nerd”. Dominant Bulldogs go from strength to strength

Gisborne kept its foot on the pedal to storm away for a second straight win to start the Bendigo Netball League season. It was a dominant display from the Bulldogs, who built on every quarter on the way to a 76-30 win against Strathfieldsaye. And Bulldogs coach Kim Bailey was impressed. Bailey said they had stepped it up a level on their round one performance, which was played in wet and windy conditions. “We need to go full throttle for the whole game,” she said. “It’s about instilling in them you have to play strongly for 60 minutes, you don’t win playing for 58 minutes. “We started slowly, despite shooting 15 goals. We built from there and finished off strongly. Teams normally drop off.” Bailey said Ella Bertacchini starred in goals after a poor start.
“She ripped the game open,” she said. “Her movement is so slick and fast. “Rachel McKenzie supports her well. “Everyone put in really well and it was one of those team efforts.” Bailey said while the playing group had been together last season, they were still adjusting to a few changes and different combinations. “The defensive structure is different,” she said. “Melinda Luke didn’t have a lot of court time last year,” she said. “She’s now playing goalkeeper. She’s involved in VNL [Victorian Netball League]. “It’s a strong combination with Maddy Stewart and Keara Fitzgerald and there’s plenty of defensive pressure down the court.” Bailey, who is coaching the Bulldogs for the first time this year, said she was enjoying the new challenge. Bailey is also coaching the ACU division 1 side in the Victorian Netball League.
Sharks find their groove By Tara Murray Rupertswood overcame a slow start to knock off Romsey in the second round of the Riddell District Netball League season. The Sharks made too many errors in the first half, trying to push the pace and finding themselves trailing by two goals at the main break. Once they found some composure, they turned the tables on the Redbacks to come away with a 44-39 win. Sharks coach Di McCormack said it was a great win against quality opposition. The match was the Redbacks’ first of the season after their round one match was postponed. McCormack said she thought the Redbacks, who claimed last year’s premiership, would again be in the mix this season despite losing a number of players. “I’m really pleased and happy,” she said. “We were down at half-time and that was because of our errors. Once we got our rhythm and played a more settled game and our style of play, things went our way.” McCormack was full of praise for Lara Keating, who she thought was best on court. Keating played in the unfamiliar role of goal defence in the absence of Beck Anstey. McCormack said Keating and fellow defender Clare Johnson were both strong, as was Matilda Elliot, who got a shot at playing in A grade. Abby Gilmore was the pick of the goalers for the Sharks, shooting 23 from 28 attempts after coming on at quarter-time. Monique Clark, who crossed from Sunbury Lions in the off season, was named the Redbacks’ best. McCormack said maintaining the core group from last season had lessened the impact of a short pre-season. The Sharks have added two new players, while they will again look to bring younger players through. Gilmore, new to the side, adds a shooting option, while Shannon Blackman, from England, gives another dimension in the mid-court. McCormack said they had both fitted in well. “There’s a different feel about things this year,” she said. “Everyone is playing good netball at the moment, but we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.” The Sharks don’t have long to recover – they face Macedon in their traditional Anzac Day clash. one training session and two matches.” In other matches, Diggers Rest smashed Broadford 70-21, Riddell won a thriller against Wallan 44-43 and Melton Centrals defeated Woodend-Hesket 55-42.
“It’s really exciting,” she said. “I don’t know what to expect and I go into every game with a little bit of an unknown. “We have some good players and it’s just about how we gel. “We’re very capable and want to do the work and the girls play for passion and pride.” The Bulldogs this week face Eaglehawk. The Bulldogs senior footballers didn’t have the same result, falling short against Strathfieldsaye. The Storm kicked 13 goals to six after quarter time, to win 15.13 (103)-8.4 (52). Youth leads the way for Sunbury Jets Sunbury Jets’ two youth league sides remain undefeated after five rounds of the Big V season. The two sides, which are both playing in youth league division 1, prevailed on Saturday night. The youth league women’s side hasn’t been overawed this year despite their promotion. Last year’s youth league division 2 champions have started 5-0. On Saturday night, they defeated Eltham Wildcats 86-50. The Jets led by 51-23 at half-time and were able to extend that lead in the second half to win 86-50. All the Jets players who took to the court scored, with four of the five starters scoring double figures. Nyomi Stowers top-scored with 18 points. The Jets sit second on the ladder, only behind Keilor Thunder which has played one more game. It was a tougher match for the youth league men’s side, which won a thriller against Waverley Falcons. The Jets came from behind after trailing by eight points at quarter-time. They hit the front in the last quarter to win 71-69. Nathan Marshall had a big night with 21 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals. The Jets are top of the ladder, one of two teams currently undefeated. Meanwhile, the Jets’ state championship women’s side has lost a second straight match. The Jets trailed by five points at quarter-time and despite winning the next three quarters, still fell short, losing 63-62. Orla O’Reilly top-scored with 14 points, while Josie Stockill, on return from the Commonwealth Games, finished with 12 points. The tough season for the men’s side has continued in division 1, with a 40-point loss to Keysborough Cougars on Saturday night. Jacob Formosa top-scored with 16 in the 98-58 loss. Sunbury Lions build on flying start for huge win Sunbury Lions’ Ballarat Football League campaign is up and running. In the battle of the Lions, it was Sunbury that came out on top against Redan. Sunbury started the stronger of the two and maintained the momentum for a 23.11 (149)-3.13 (31) win at Clarke Oval. Sunbury coach Ben Jordan said the margin was completely unexpected and the performance very pleasing. “Both sides lost some players and you never know how it will pan out,” he said. “We got the jump on them. They had a fair bit of the ball, but couldn’t hit the scoreboard. “It was a full four-quarter game and we defended really well.” Trent Stead kicked five goals up forward for Sunbury, vindicating Jordan’s decision to give him a run up forward. “He’s a good kick at goal,” Jordan said. He said Stead wasn’t alone in having a good game in attack. He said improved ball movement up the ground had helped the forwards as they explored different options.
“Grant Valles and Jack Sheahan are pretty handy up forward and Mick Edwards continues to do it at ground level,” the coach said. Edwards, Aaron Christensen and Alik Magin all kicked three goals apiece as 11 players kicked goals. Mitch Conn was named best on ground, with Jordan saying the club was loving having him available. Conn is on Coburg’s VFL list and didn’t play a game with Sunbury last season because of his VFL commitments. But as the VFL no longer has a development competition, Conn could spend more time at Sunbury. “He’s right on the fringe at Coburg,” Jordan said. “He showed his class and he uses the ball well … he loves playing at Sunbury.” Jayden Eales and Nathan Wood were also named among the best. Tristan Lenaz hurt his ankle in the third quarter and didn’t return to the field. He will be in doubt for this week when Sunbury take on Melton South.
Melton South suffered a first-up loss to Melton, with the Bloods winning the derby 15.8 (98)-10.12 (72). Sharks crush Romsey By Tara Murray Rupertswood had a surprisingly big win against Romsey in the Riddell District Football League. With both sides finalists last season it was expected to be a close match, however Rupertswood looked a level above, kicking away to a 25.8 (158)-5.8 (38) win. Rupertswood coach Nick Ash said the score didn’t reflect the match, with it being a hard-fought contest all day. It was Romsey’s first game of the season after its round one match was postponed due to a power failure and it appeared the late start didn’t help its cause. “It was good to get away with the four points,” Ash said. “We certainly thought it would be closer and it was a hard-fought contest all day.” The Sharks started well, kicking seven goals in the first quarter to set the tone for the rest of the day. Ash said it was something the team had worked on. “It’s been a focus the last fortnight after a slow start against Sunbury,” he said. “It’s something we worked on across the three sides, and were able to show that in the seniors and 19s.” Todd Podolczak kicked 10 goals in a best-on-ground performance and half the team got on the scoreboard. Ash said the forwards were willing to work for each other. “Todd was really good and he got some really good service. “Sometimes it’s about sacrificing your game and he did that in round one and got the opportunities this week. “He got 10 goals, but it was a real team effort to get the space in the forward line.” The win came despite the side missing several key players. Ash said the players they had brought in during the off season had added depth to the squad and they had enough players to cover injuries. He said while they didn’t rest players on Saturday, some guys got a bit more time on the bench than normal. “We didn’t want to disrespect them … you’ve got to get the players on the ground to play your best footy.” There isn’t much rest for the Sharks as they face Macedon in their annual Anzac Day match-up on Wednesday. The match is even bigger this year, as it doubles as a grand final rematch. “We lost to them four times in close results, but couldn’t get across the line,” Ash said of the Cats. “We haven’t won an Anzac match either.

Gisborne started its season with a big win against Ballarat in the AFL Goldfields women’s competition. It was all the Bulldogs on the scoreboard, as they won 14.11 (95)-0.0 (0). Jessica D’Antonio kicked four goals for the Bulldogs and was named their best.
NRL Vic
Sunbury United has secured its first win of the NRL Vic first-grade season. The Tigers, who struggled in the opening two rounds, easily accounted for Waverley Oakleigh Panthers 42-10. The Tigers are fifth, one of three teams sitting 1-2.
Ballarat netball
The Sunbury Lions’ title defence got off to tricky start in a thrilling round one match in Ballarat Netball League. Just one goal separated Redan and the Lions at the end of every quarter, with the Lions eventually winning 40-39. Recruit Tarnee Adams shot 27 goals for the Lions, while Kate Fletcher, who has returned to the Lions, was named their best.

The two Sunbury teams had mixed results in the Essendon District Football League women’s competition at the weekend. The Sunbury Kangaroos remain undefeated after defeating Craigieburn by 93 points, 15.21 (111)-2.6 (18). The Sunbury Lions suffered their second loss, losing to Westmeadows 5.3 (33)-0.5 (5) after the game was called off midway through the game after injuries left the Lions short on players.
TAC Cup
The Calder Cannons stormed home in the last quarter to seal a win against Greater Western Victorian Rebels in the TAC Cup. The Cannons trailed by 12 points at three-quarter time before kicking six goals in the last quarter, to win 12.11 (83)-9.11 (65). Co-captain Jack Bytel had 36 touches in the win. Thunder wins roll on By Tara Murray
Sunbury United suffered its first loss of the FFV state league 3 north-west season. Having to settle for a draw in the last match, United was looking to get back on the winners’ list against Upfield. Neither team could score in the first half and it looked like the match would be heading for 0-0 draw. Upfield though took the lead in the 87th minute through a corner. United looked for the equaliser, but it wasn’t to come, with Upfield taking the three points. The loss leaves United sitting third on the ladder after four rounds. United this week faces middle of the table Williamstown. In state league 5 west, Gisborne returned to the winners’ list with victory against Deakin Ducks. Joseph Cavoli scored twice in the first half for Gisborne and when Cavoli scored his third in the 50th minute, Gisborne led 3-0. The Ducks responded a minute later to reduce the margin back to two goals. Jake McIntyre continued his good form, scoring Gisborne’s fourth in the 71st minute. The Ducks scored a consolation goal late. Gisborne sits third on the ladder, ahead of a clash with Maidstone United. Tara Murray Lucas Shaw kicked five goals on Saturday. East Sunbury has had its best start to an Essendon District Football League division 2 season. The Thunder recorded a third straight win on Saturday as they held off a fast finishing Roxburgh Park. It was a special day for both clubs, with an Anzac Day ceremony being held for a second straight year. Thunder coach Steve Grey said he was happy with the first three quarters which set up the win. Despite being outscored five goals to two in the final quarter, Thunder held on to win 14.10 (94)-11.13 (79). “Things are going along nicely at the moment,” Grey said. “We’re playing some good footy and starting to gel and the new players have fitted in. “We played some real good football in the first three quarters. “At times though we did turn the footy over a bit looking for the last option up forward.” Grey admitted there was some nerves when the Magpies came at them in the last quarter, having been in the same situation in the corresponding round last year. On that occasion the Magpies got up by one point. “The group we have this year had a lot of belief,” he said. “It just shows when the game is on the line the players will stand up.” Brad Bernacki was best on ground in his second senior game for the club. Jorden Braddy continued his good form in the ruck, while Lucas Shaw was strong up forward kicking five goals. The Thunder will face a couple of challenging weeks, before their first bye of the season. They face Northern Saints and Moonee Valley the next two rounds.

After a month of Mazdas that involved being behind the wheel of everything from a Mazda2 mini to a big BT-50 pick-up truck, it seemed appropriate to finish with a stint in a CX-9 Azami. Since its Australian debut in 2016, the company’s SUV pinnacle has carried off a number of awards for its class-leading features. Now the bar has been raised higher. The flagship SUV has been given dynamic, safety and comfort upgrades, including G-Vectoring Control to further improve handling. It’s as you were, as far as styling of the CX-9 is concerned, the only change being the addition of Soul Red Crystal Metallic, a newly developed body colour that has proven a big hit. Seating comfort has been further improved. The front pair of seats now have control over a wider range of positioning. Automatic folding mirrors have been added across the range. The CX-9 was the first Mazda to adopt a full-colour head-up active driving display projected on to the windscreen, giving key driving and navigation information just below the driver’s line of sight. Mazda CX-9 now has the latest version of the MZD Connect system, which links smartphones to the internet and social media. In addition, the centre display on the dash has been enlarged to eight inches on higher trim levels. The vehicle is powered by the Skyactiv-G 2.5T, the newly-developed top-of-the-range petrol engine. get a second top tether point for third-row seats, enabling child or booster seats to be mounted to all three middle-row seats and both seats in the third row. There are also two IsoFix mounting points on both outer seats in the middle row. The driver has come in for some extra attention, with the seat adding a new power tilt function that adjusts the height of the cushion’s front edge.
