Council split on local law By Serena Seyfort A decision to review a local law which regulates the use of motorised recreational vehicles has divided Macedon Ranges council. The council will allocate funds in its 2018-19 budget for community consultation on the law, with some councillors saying proper consultation was lacking when it was written in 2013. Local Law number 10 stipulates that residents need a permit to use motorised recreational vehicles – motor bikes, trail bikes, go-karts – on a property smaller than four hectares.
Use of the vehicles is prohibited within 500 metres of a dwelling. Councillor Roger Jukes has been raising concerns about the “blanket prohibition” since last year, saying most of the shire’s “rural living is within 500 metres of a dwelling”. He said he had received complaints from residents saying the law probihited them from legally riding the vehicles on their own properties. Cr Jukes told Star Weekly that the community was asked for feedback about the use of recreational vehicles in 2013, but the decision to ban their use within 500 metres of a house
was not put to the community. At the council’s most recent meeting, Cr Mandi Mees said she believed the commmunity consultation in 2013 lacked “full transparency”. “We never had the conversation about banning in any way,” Cr Mees told the meeting. “There are members of the community who have no opportunity to even apply to operate any kind of motorised recreational vehicle on their own private property.” In February, Cr Jukes successfully moved to review the law. However mayor Jennifer Anderson attempted to rescind that decision at the council’s latest meeting.
Cr Anderson argued the law was open for consultation for “plenty of time” when it was written. She said the community should be able to have a say on whether budget funds are allocated to reviewing an issue that had already sought community consultation. Several councillors said they had been contacted by residents both for and against the vehicles. Four councillors voted to retract the council’s decision to fund a review of the law, while five voted to uphold the decision. Councillor Bill West said it was “the most difficult subject” he had encountered on the council.

Parking signs miss the mark By Serena Seyfort Almost 200 people were fined by Macedon Ranges council for parking illegally during the Easter long weekend. And even more parking fines were issued by Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol officers. The council and Victoria Police have been working together to manage the high number of visitors flocking to Macedon and Mount Macedon for the annual “autumn colours”.
Honour Avenue in Macedon has been temporarily signed as a “no standing” zone between 9am-5pm to help cope with the influx of traffic. But a number of drivers ignored the signs. The council issued 196 parking infringements in Macedon between Friday, March 30 and Monday, April 2, on top of the parking fines issued by local police. Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol officers stringently patrolled Macedon Ranges roads
from Thursday, March 29 until Monday, April 2 as part of Victoria Police’s Operation Nexus. Officers detected 34 speeding offences, caught two drink drivers, one drug driver, two unlicensed drivers and a suspended driver throughout the operation. Three drivers were apprehended for disobeying traffic signals, three for seatbelt offences, one for using a mobile phone and seven unregistered vehicles were detected
being driven. Police, Gisborne CFA, SES and an ambulance attended a crash on Bacchus Marsh Road in Gisborne just after 7pm on Saturday, March 31. The male driver was airlifted to hospital after the single car-accident. Gisborne police said the driver was out of hospital as of Thursday, April 4, and was expected to be charged for driving in a dangerous manner.

Community funding fires up CFA Romsey’s CFA brigade is celebrating after receiving upgrades thanks to community, council, state government and local business support. The brigade has two new firefighting appliances, including a heavy tanker. Brigade captain Nic Needham said members had undertaken months of intensive training in preparation for the new tanker.

Public roads, footpaths and facilities across the Macedon Ranges are getting upgrades ahead of winter. Macedon Ranges council is constructing new footpaths in Gisborne on Fisher Street, Wyralla Crescent and Mill Road; in New Gisborne on Barry Road; and in Kyneton on the Campaspe River Walk. Footpaths throughout Malmsbury Botanic Gardens and along Urquhart and Forest streets in Woodend are also being upgraded. Construction of new footpaths along White Avenue, Park Lane and Murphy Street in Romsey is scheduled to start this month. Roadworks are under way at Hamilton, Brantome and Prince streets in Gisborne, at Three Chain Road in Newham and at Sidonia Road in Sidonia. Council crews are undertaking drainage works at Devonshire Lane, Mount Macedon and Gardiner Reserve, Gisborne. Gisborne library is undergoing refurbishment, including the removal of internal walls and the addition of a rear courtyard. This project is a partnership between the council, Goldfields Library Corporation and the Victorian Government. The toilets at Kyneton Town Hall were upgraded in February. The hot water services at Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve are being changed over to more environmentally beneficial alternatives and the entrance is being upgraded. The kitchen at Bullengarook Pavillion is getting renewal works, and internal works at Gisborne Scout Hall are due to be finished by May.

Burn-off ban remains in place By Serena Seyfort A number of illegal burn-offs has prompted Macedon Ranges council to remind residents that fire restrictions are still in place. Burn-offs and the use of some machinery remain prohibited throughout the shire until the CFA officially calls an end to the fire danger period. The council’s acting manager community safety, Michael Dyt, has warned residents that anyone who burns off without a permit during the fire restriction period risks being fined. “Police take a zero tolerance approach to those who light fires during the fire danger period and heavy penalties apply,” Mr Dyt said. CFA group officer Ian Hays said life would be much easier for CFA volunteers if residents checked what restrictions were in place before starting a fire. He said all local brigades had been called out to illegal burn-offs this year, particularly in Woodend. Sunbury and Bulla residents also cannot burn off yet, with the fire restriction period still in place in Hume. Restrictions are usually lifted about May 1 but it is dependant on local conditions each year. Once restrictions are lifted, Mr Hays has asked residents to register their burn-offs to help avoid the CFA being called out unnecessarily. Register a supervised burn-off at 1800 668 511. Pet rego tags to last a lifetime Sunbury pet owners will no longer need to change their animal’s registration tag each year, with Hume council switching to lifetime tags. Pet owners will begin receiving registration renewal notices this month with their pet’s new lifetime tag attached. Mayor Geoff Porter said the move to lifetime tags meant there would be a delay in residents receiving their renewal notices this year. “We expect to send them out in April with an amended due date. Until then, all animals registered from April 2017 will remain registered until further notice,” he said. “Residents will no longer receive a new registration tag each year with their renewal notice; they will just need to pay the annual fee by the due date to renew their pet’s registration.” Cr Porter said it was important residents checked their details were correct on the registration renewal notice when it arrives. He said pet registrations were the best way to ensure lost pets were returned to their owner. Macedon Ranges council already uses lifetime tags, but registrations must be renewed anually. Station plan goes off the rails By Serena Seyfort Residents have called it quits on a three-year campaign to have Malmsbury railway station restored and maintained. The 1862 station continues to be an active stop on the Bendigo line, but the historic buildings have remained empty and deteriorating since the 1980s. Malmsbury Historical Society former secretary Mike Todd said the most recent efforts to save the buildings had folded as local interest fell away from the campaign. He was among a group of locals who came
together three years ago to try to have the station chosen for a state government-funded VicTrack program that restored regional stations. A business plan was developed for the application, suggesting the station could house community activities, such as arts and history, and some commercial business to generate funding. More than 600 people signed a petition to the local minister and the campaign was backed by Macedon Ranges council and local community groups, but the station project failed to attract funding.
Mr Todd said he believed Malmsbury was “wilfully overlooked”, and that the campaign has folded because “active support was hard to raise and impossible to sustain”. Mr Todd said the condition of the station had been a problem since it was closed in 1978. In the years since it had been privately leased but remained empty. He believes it has not been leased “for many months”. The Malmsbury local said he would be willing to help other efforts to save the station. “This has not been the first campaign to save Malmsbury station and I hope it will not be the last.”

New place to call home Karen Curnow is one of 11 Macedon Ranges residents who will be sworn in as Australian citizens at Kyneton Town Hall tonight. The new citizens range from 4-56 years of age and come from the Phillipines, United Kingdom, England and New Zealand. While Ms Curnow is about to officially become an Australian citizen, she is not a newcomer to Australia. Ms Curnow moved from England to Australia in 1996 to marry an Australian man and she has lived in Australia for the almost 22 years since. She first came to the Macedon Ranges in 2009 after her St Andrews home was burnt down in the Black Saturday fires. Ms Curnow said she was still in her house when it caught fire. “I got out with the clothes I was wearing, the contents of my handbag and one dog,” she said.
Ms Curnow then moved to a “safer spot” in the countryside in Romsey, and on to Gisborne in 2014. She said she loved the scenery and the “horsey” culture in the Macedon Ranges. “I like the small town-feel of Gisborne, and that there’s something different in each town in the area.” Serena Seyfort

Bunny blitz for Sunbury
By Serena Seyfort Females from across the Macedon Ranges are encouraged to join the council’s celebration of courageous and adventurous women. The free event for females aged over 10 years will feature inspiring women and highlight local leadership opportunities for women. Acclaimed author Robyn Davidson is set to speak and singer-songwriter and ARIA award-winner Kavisha Mazzella will perform at the evening. Ms Davidson’s successful book Tracks chronicles her epic 2835-kilometre camel trek across the Australian desert, and has been produced into a film. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the evening was a chance to celebrate the achievements of pioneering local women. “We’re encouraging all women and girls aged 10 years and over to come along to what will be a very special night,” Cr Anderson said. “We’re hoping the event will encourage more women and girls to push the boundaries and break stereotypes, and never be afraid to try something new.” Free child-minding is available and car pooling is available through the shire’s six neighbourhood houses. A virus is being released in Sunbury as part of a nationwide effort to control feral rabbits. The release of Calicivirus RHDV1 K5 will be overseen by the Invasive Animals Co-operative Research Centre and the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning. Hume council is also running a pest rabbit program. The council will distribute baits in known feral rabbit hotspots at Emu Bottom Wetlands from April 9 to 20. Mayor Geoff Porter said the European rabbit was Australia’s most destructive agricultural pest animal, costing the industry $200 million every year. “Rabbits are a significant environmental pest, with less than one feral rabbit per hectare being enough to stop the growth of many native species in conservation areas,” Cr Porter said. “The release of K5 is an important initiative to control the feral rabbit population in Australia.” The council has been encouraging landowners to conduct their own pest rabbit controls to increase the effectiveness of the nationwide initiative. It has advised owners of pet rabbits to visit a veterinarian for the calicivirus vaccine to protect their rabbits from the virus. Postcards from Hume Four of Hume’s top cafes and restaurants are set to shine in an upcoming episode of popular travel program, Postcards. The Channel Nine program visited the municipality late last month to film a segment for an upcoming episode. Host Lauren Phillips and the Postcards crew visited Sunbury, where they filmed stories at organic store and cafe, Happy Olive, and quaint cafe, Fork and Cake. They also visited Roxburgh Park’s Corner Store Espresso, and up-and-coming Mickleham winery, Marnong Estate. Hume mayor Geoff Porter said the episode
would showcase Hume’s diverse dining options. “It was great to have Lauren Phillips spend time in Hume. I think she was very impressed with all that Hume has to offer,” he said. “These are just some of the many gems that we are fortunate to have here in Hume and we are excited to have them beamed into hundreds of thousands of lounge rooms across Australia.” The Postcards episode will air on Sunday, April 22 at 5.30pm. Cost blowout for recycling crisis Macedon Ranges council will wear an extra cost of $233,000 for its recycling service this financial year. And it is expecting to allocate hundreds of thousands of dollars more to recycling in the upcoming budget. The council has agreed to pay an additional $136 per tonne of recycling collected in the shire until June 30, which will come out of the $925,000 surplus from its 2017-18 budget. The increased cost, which the council has been paying since March, has come from the council continuing to use Visy to dispose of recyclables. Visy’s expenses have increased since China upped its standards for taking recyclables from the company. The council’s assets and operations director Dale Thornton said the council expected a reimbursement of about $85,000 from a state government package. But Mr Thornton said the government had been “quite clear” that councils were on their own to foot the bill of the increased costs from July 1. He said the council was negotiating with “everyone” involved, and would put its best estimate of recycling costs in the council’s 2018-19 budget. Mr Thornton said the council did not expect any further price increases from Visy. He said the council was also exploring other alternatives for collecting recyclables. He said in the meantime, residents should continue to recycle, but as always, should cut down on buying products with unnecessary packaging. “Be conscious of buying things with less wrapping,” he said.

Work on a $105,000 maintenance project has just finished at Bolinda Primary School. The school has received upgrades to its electrical system and to the roof and plumbing in the art room and administration building. A fresh water filtration system has been installed to provide fresh drinking water for the pupils and teachers. Some asbestos and a beehive were removed from the school grounds. The works were funded by the state government’s Maintenance Program. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas visited the school to see the improvements. “These important upgrades mean Bolinda will remain a fantastic place to learn and a great choice of school for students in the area,” Ms Thomas said. MY PLACE Karen O’Sullivan has been elected to serve as the first female president at Kyneton Football Netball Club in the same year that the club celebrates its 150th anniversary. The Barfold resident speaks with Serena Seyfort. What’s your connection to Kyneton? My husband, children and I moved from Port Melbourne to Springhill (near Trentham) about 17 years ago. Ten years ago we moved to Barfold, which is 17 kilometres out of Kyneton, so Kyneton became our hometown. Our four boys went to school at Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School and they started their secondary education at Sacred Heart College. What do you like about living in the area? We live on a large farm of 1000 acres on the Campaspe River. We find it peaceful and refreshing to be here. My husband and I both also work in the city. We love the fact that we can live in the country and commute to the city on occasion and still work from home as well.
If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? I’d have more volunteers at the football club – we’re always looking for more volunteers. Otherwise, we’re pretty lucky. We’re probably in one of the most beautiful parts of the world here. Tell us about your involvement with football.

Do you have a favourite local place? I love the Campaspe River Walk, I walk it with friends on occasion, and the cafes in Kyneton. The cafe life is comparable to anywhere in Europe. The coffee that you get in Kyneton is unbelievable compared to some parts of Europe that I’ve been to. I always look forward to getting home to our local blends. I think we’re spoilt for choice here. I’ve been involved with football in the region for 11 years – since the boys started playing at Tylden in the previously known Midland League. When that league was disbanded in 2013, I became president of the newly formed juniors at Kyneton Football Netball Club where my sons started. I was on the executive of the juniors until 2015, during 2016-17 I was vice
president of the club, and I became president last football, I don’t think I was going to ever be the president of the local ballet school. My sons November. all play for the club in one fashion or another, Tell us about being the first female president among playing at school and with the Victorian Football League. The big thing for the club this and what’s on for the club for the year. It was a privilege to be elected to be the first year is we are going into our 150th year, which female president, but I don’t really consider the is a really remarkable achievement for the club gender to be relevant. Having four sons who play to have come this far.

Jets put on after-burners to record big bounce-back win Sunbury Jets bounced back from a rare loss to record a strong win against Bulleen Boomers on Saturday night. Having had to wait two weeks to get back onto the court, the Jets made sure early on they were not going to suffer a second successive loss. The Jets led 50-27 at half-time and increased that to 81-52 at full time. Jets coach Kennedy Kereama said they had made some big improvements since their loss. He said they adapted well to the Boomers zone defence which they used to try and slow the Jets down. “It was a really good win and it was obviously
good to bounce back,” he said. “We played some really good team basketball and had 26 assists.” Kereama said there wouldn’t be many times this season that they found themselves with a 20-plus lead at half-time, but when they did they had to ensure they didn’t let the foot off the pedal. “There’s things to play for, irrespective of the scoreboard,” he said. “In round one we left the door ajar against Hume and they made a run. “We did a good job of making sure we came out focused after half-time. There was a lot of good things.”
Elyce Penaluna top scored with 26 points, while Orla O’Reilly and Monique Stevens also scored double figures. All the Jets players were given plenty of court time, including development players Emily Conn and Emily Achter. Kereama said that was one of the pleasing things to come out of the win. With two wins on the board from the opening three rounds, Kereama said they still had plenty of improvement to come with their full squad not expected to be available until about round six. “We still have a long way to go,” he said. “The bench is playing good basketball as a
bench unit, but we need to be better at closing out games. We want to ensure we’re playing our best basketball at the end of the season.” Meanwhile, the men’s division 1 side remains without a win. The Jets trailed by 29 points at half-time with the game all but over. They showed better signs in the second half, winning both quarters, but still losing 84-69. The Jets youth league women’s division 1 side lost to Geelong Supercats 59-46, while the youth league men’s side defeated Ballarat Miners 106-77. Tara Murray
Thunder strikes early By Tara Murray East Sunbury had no complaints after its round one thrashing of Hadfield in Essendon District Football League division 2. The Thunder took a little bit to get going, but once they did, they ran away with the match, winning 20.19 (139)-8.1 (49). Thunder coach Steve Grey was more than happy with the first-up result. “We’ve got off to a good start and can’t complain with a 90-point win,” he said. “We started off scratchy, we had a lot of play forward, but we couldn’t convert. “They were converting every time they went forward. “With the new players coming in, we were right once we got going. “We moved the ball well and we’ve added a bit more hardness and experience.” Ruckman Jorden Braddy was best on ground, winning the David Kimpton Medal, named after the club legend who passed away in 2016. It’s the second year the club has awarded the medal and dedicated the game in Kimpton’s honour. Grey said they were hoping for a big year from Braddy. “He was injured a lot last year and we think he will have a big year this year.” Kamen Ogilvie, who has returned to the Thunder this season, and Callum Lever were the other standouts. Lever kicked five goals. Grey said they would take a bit of time to hit their straps with so many new players in their side. Among the off season signings were Anthony Sammut, Tim Hill, Shane Lindsay, Ogilvie and Jamerson Campbell. Grey said he’s happy with the early signs. “Everyone is getting along well together and it’s starting to show on the field,” he said. “They’re gelling well, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement. “I’m not expecting us to start peaking for another three to four weeks.” Grey said after making inroads the past couple of seasons, finals were the clear goal this year. “We have to make finals,” he said. “We need to be more consistent across the season. Our best is as good as anyone else. “The new guys will add experience and help them out, but it’s not just the new players coming in and making a difference. “I think we can improve by 30 per cent.” He said the likes of Lachlan Brne, Callum Lever, Tom Cree and Jake Spiteri would be among those he expected to step up even further this season. Northern Saints and Moonee Valley were the other winners in round one. Meanwhile, the division 2 season has been extended due to the withdrawal of Keilor Park. Sullivan Medal split two ways Riddell’s Matthew Livingstone and Romsey’s Ben Way have shared the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s Sullivan Medal. The Bombers’ quick polled three votes in the final round to move even with the Romsey captain-coach on 19 votes. Livingstone, who was named vice-captain of the GDCA team of the year, took 39 wickets in the regular season. He also averaged 28 with the bat. It’s the second time Way has won the medal. He shared it with Jason McGann and Rhys Berry in 2015-16. Way, who only played two matches last season, dominated with the bat in all forms of the game. He averaged 82 during the McIntyre Cup season, including four centuries and three 50s. He also smashed 175 in a game for the association at Bendigo Country Week. Way was also named skipper of the GDCA team of the season. The pair finished one vote clear of Bacchus Marsh’s Madushanka Ekanayaka, who finished with 51 wickets in the regular season and was named the grand final most valuable player. His Bulls’ teammate James Lidgett finished four votes further back with Riddell captain-coach Mick Allen and Gisborne captain Jarryd Vernon finishing equal fifth on 12 votes. The top six were all named in the team of the season. Gisborne’s Darren Ward, Romsey’s Chris Burkett, Woodend’s Nick Smith and Warren Else, Lancefield’s Matthew Bowden and Sunbury’s Brad Hunter were also named in the team of the year. Under-strength Macedon opens season with victory Macedon held off a determined Riddell in the opening round of the Riddell District Netball League. The Bombers jumped out of the blocks and led 10-5 early on, before the Cats settled and took the lead. The Cats led by one goal at quarter-time and managed to stay in front for the rest of the game, but were made to work for it. They went on to win 58-51. Cats coach Ciara Stewart said it was a high quality match. “There were a 109 goals in 60 minutes, it goes to show how good both teams are,” she said. “We didn’t give the ball up and they didn’t give the ball up and the few times we did the other team had to fight just as hard. “That 60 minutes was a hard slog.” Stewart was full of praise for the opposition, but said the work they had done over the pre-season helped them get over the line. She said nerves played a part early on. The win was made even better, with the Cats not at full strength.
Janelle Birch missed the game, while Katie Clarke was out after breaking her toe. Chloe Wilson only played a quarter and a half due to illness and Karlee De Bono only played a quarter also due to illness. Stewart said everyone stepped up and played different roles. Tayissa Coppinger won the best on court medal as part of the Puka Up Cup initiative. The Cats won the overall trophy, as the two clubs looked to raise mental health awareness. Stewart said Coppinger was brilliant in defence, working in the circle with two B-grade defenders. “It’s a good thing Ty trains against Bec Colwell and plays against her too. “We knew she could keep her under control. As long as Ty could talk it through with the people behind her and get one or two balls, we would be right.” The Cats shared the goals around with Stewart shooting 21 goals, Amy Carroll 20 and Wilson 17. Bec Colwell, who has returned to Riddell
after playing in the Ballarat Netball League season last year, shot 41 goals for the Cats. Colwell is one of two returning players, along with coach Lauren Close. Cats win a tight contest By Tara Murray Macedon and Riddell kicked off the Riddell District Football League season with a thriller last weekend. Just one point separated the two teams at the final siren and the match could have gone either way in the dying minutes. Both teams looked good at times, but would also come out of the game with areas to improve. The Cats snuck home for the win, 12.7 (79)-11.12 (78). Cats coach Ben Tankard said he was proud of how his side fought out the game. The ball spent most of the dying minutes in the Bombers forward line. “We expected a hard-fought contest today and we knew Riddell would give it a go,” he said. “I’m proud of the boys how they fought it out … a one point game and 30 seconds to go and the ball in their forward 50, it could have gone either way. “We’re not getting too carried away and we’re sure Riddell wouldn’t be too disappointed either.” Tankard said the last quarter was really pleasing and they had put into place the structures they had been working on during the off season. He said the third quarter, when they let the Bombers take the lead and control of the game, was disappointing. “Riddell completely outworked us in the third quarter and we sat on our heels a little bit. “We were probably a little bit lucky that Riddell didn’t make the most of the momentum and kick clear. “Saying that, the first 10 minutes of the last quarter we wiped that margin off pretty quickly and our guys deserve credit for that too.” Matt Dick was awarded the best on ground medal as part of the Puka Up Cup initiative. The Cats won the overall trophy, as the two clubs looked to raise mental health awareness, with both clubs having been affected by suicide in the past 12 months. Tankard said he thought Dick was clearly best on ground, with Clint Burgess, Seb Miletic and Matthew Knox all important in the win. Knox kicked three goals, including two in the final quarter. Haydn Ross kicked five goals for the Bombers, with Michael Sahlberg, who kicked three goals, named their best. Both sides have the weekend off, with round one being played over two weekends. The Kangaroos dominated the game and the result could have been much bigger if they had kicked straight. The Kangaroos won 9.16 (70)-4.0 (24). Tara Crisp kicked five goals. The Sunbury Lions suffered a 13.20 (98)-0.2 (2) loss to Pascoe Vale on Saturday.

Sunbury United got its second win of the FFV state league 3 north-west season with a hard-fought win against FC Strathmore. Scores were 1-1 apiece at half-time, before substitute Joseph Tardio came on and scored the winner in the 88th minute. Gisborne also got its second win in the state league 5 west season. Daniel Adamo, Jake Mcintyre and Charles Eastwood scored for Gisborne in the 3-0 win against Melbourne Lions.

Goonawarra Golf Club took out the 2018 Romsey Women’s Challenge Bowl on Thursday. Teams of three from 14 different clubs participated in the Stableford event on a sunny autumn day. The Goonawarra team of Cheryl Price, Kathleen Eiser and Barb Marino took out the win, ahead of Woodend. Ricky Rickman took out the individual A-grade award, with Goonawarra’s Cheryl Price winning the B-grade competition.

It was a tough weekend for the Calder Cannons’ two TAC Cup sides. The boys gave up a three-quarter time lead to lose to Sandringham Dragons 14.16 (100)-11.11 (77). New Stinger comes with venom By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring To Aussies, a stinger is a nasty sea creature; the deadly box jellyfish, to be precise. Recently a new ‘animal’ was added to the lexicon and it is neither nasty nor deadly. The Stinger fastback sports sedan is touted by some as being the South Korean automaker’s Commodore and Kia Motors Australia chief operating officer Damien Meredith, says he is confident the Stinger has the attributes which will endear it to Australian drivers across a wide demographic. Mated with Kia’s own eight-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels via a mechanical limited-slip differential, the latter gives the car its high-performance pedigree with a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, using launch control, and a top speed of 270 km/h. Two engines are offered, more on these later. Each engine grade comes in three specification levels - S, Si and GT-Line for the 2.0-litre and S, Si and GT for the 3.3-litre. On test was the Stinger 330Si. If the Stinger bears a strong resemblance in profile to the modern European sports sedan it is no coincidence as the Kia design chief Peter Schreyer once held a lofty design post at German automobile maker Audi. And Gregory Guillaume, Kia Europe’s chief designer, through his passion for the gran turismo cars he admired as a child, played no small part in the evolution of the Stinger from the original GT Concept. With designers opting for an elegant, athletic look as opposed to aggressive and brutal proportions, the Stinger, together with its rear-drive set-up, delivers a spacious passenger cabin and large boot capable of carrying two full-size pieces of luggage or golf bags.

Distinctive touches include Kia’s signature ‘tiger-nose’ grille and a rear valance incorporating two twin oval exhaust pipes. Front air curtains, wheel-arch vents, smooth underbody and rear diffuser take care of aerodynamics. Contoured seats are available with Nappa leather (the Si has black leather trim as standard), while the driver’s seat can be had with four-way air-cell lumbar support in the seatback and side bolsters for added comfort. Bluetooth is standard across the Stinger range, while smartphones can be charged via
a pad in the centre console. Quality audio is delivered through a nine-speaker system with 8-inch screen. The Stinger is available with a choice of two petrol engines - a single turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder producing 182 kW and 353 Nm. Our 330 Si test car had the 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged V6 ‘Lambda II’ engine. New for Kia is Driver Attention Alert, which monitors several inputs from vehicle and driver, sounding a warning chime and displaying a graphic in the instrument binnacle if it senses a lapse in concentration from the driver. While there is no arguing with the Stinger 330Si claims as a genuine high-spec sports sedan, there is still the lingering doubts as to whether shelling out 60 grand for a Korean car is wise, until maybe the seven-year warranty is waved in front of the potential buyer.
