Waste crisis averted By Serena Seyfort The Macedon Ranges was faced with the prospect of a rubbish crisis last week when the shire’s waste collector called a snap strike. The council’s assets and operations director Dale Thornton said the council had no warning about Wheelie Waste’s strike action. He said he received a text message from the contractor about 5.45am on Wednesday notifying him that they were suspending rubbish collection in the shire immediately. Mr Thornton said Wheelie Waste was attempting to pressure the state government into revealing details of its financial assistance package for contractors affected by a recent recycling crisis. “The impact on residents in our shire could have been enormous – and in part it was,” he said. Mr Thornton said the council was in discussions with Wheelie Waste late into Wednesday evening. Wheelie Waste resumed its normal collection of waste, recycling and garden waste on Thursday. Extra drivers were put on for the rest of the week to catch up with services. Mr Thornton said he expected waste collection to be back to normal this week. Macedon Ranges council is one of several Victorian councils paying more for recycling collection as a result of a new policy introduced in China in January. Recycling giant Visy has faced increased costs to meet the new standards which has had a flow-on effect to waste collectors, such as Wheelie Waste, and the organisations it services. The state government last month announced a $13 million package to help councils offset the increased costs until June 30. Mr Thornton said Wheelie Waste representatives said the snap strike was in protest at a lack of detail regarding the government package. He said Wheelie Waste wanted reassurances the council would continue to use its service until June 30. However, Mr Thornton said the council did not have details of how much government support it would receive. He said the council would make a decision on whether it was able to continue using the contractor when the terms of the package were known. He said until then the council had committed to using the service at the additional cost of about $12,000 a week. Wheelie Waste declined to comment.
Marjorie 100 years young Marjorie Henry has spent most of her life caring for others, but last week it was her turn to be the centre of attention as she celebrated her 100th birthday. The centenarian was born in the Otways on March 6, 1918, the oldest of five children, and spent her momentous day celebrating with five generations of her growing family, many of whom live in Riddells Creek. Her only child, Joan Strawbridge, said Marjorie had spent most of her life as a serving sister in the priory of the St Johns Ambulance, among other jobs, including a seamstress. “She used to tell us stories about riding a horse to school, and about her family farm that she grew up on,” Ms Strawbridge said. “She lived in Colac, and then Pascoe Vale, before she started working at 16, and she was working on a farm in New Zealand when the war broke out. So her and her first husband came back to Australia on a black-out ship and I was born a couple of years later. “He left soon after, and she raised me with my grandparents. She’s a very strong woman.” Marjorie remarried in 1954, and when her second husband died in 1967 she moved in with her daughter. Later, Marjorie moved in with her mother to care for her, before returning to her daughter, and marrying for a third time. Watching her family grow to now include three grand children, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson, she still refuses to call herself old. “She’s never said that she was old, even when she was in her 80s she just said she was ‘getting old’,” Ms Strawbridge said. “So when I asked her if she would be old when she turned 100, she thought about it and just said ‘maybe’.” Marjorie Henry with daughter Joan Strawbridge, granddaughter Karen Strawbridge, great-granddaughter Rebecca Galea and great-great-grandson Joey. Koala euthanised after dog attack By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network is urging pet owners to keep watch over their animals after a koala was attacked by a dog in Macedon. The volunteer group has taken to Facebook to notify Macedon Ranges residents that an 11 kilogram koala had to be euthanised earlier this month because of injuries sustained during a dog attack. “It’s been a tough start to the year for koalas in the Macedon Ranges,” the post read.
The volunteers have encouraged residents to ensure their pets do not roam. “We ask all residents to be mindful that they are sharing this amazing environment with native wildlife.” Wildlife Victoria, which receives reports and calls about wildlife needing help across the state, takes a number of calls about animals being attacked by dogs every month. Two per cent, or about 67 of the 3327 animals in need of help that the organisation attended to in February were caused by dog attacks, according to Wildlife Victoria data.

Wildlife Victoria operations supervisor Emily Small said there were many instances of dogs attacking koalas. Ms Small said the attacks often left both the dog and koala seriously injured, but as domestic animals, dogs had more access to help. Her advice to dog owners was to be aware of
the area that is accessible to their dog – whether it is private or public land. “If you know there is a koala around, keep your dog well away,” she said. Considering the hot weather that Victoria continues to experience this month, Ms Small has also advised residents to place dishes of water outside for wildlife to access – that are not in the reach of dogs. She said lizards, birds and small marsupials benefited from low dishes of water, particularly those with sticks inside to allow them to perch onto something.
Man charged with murder A lawyer for accused murderer Shane Robertson has told a court she is worried about her client’s mental state and urged that he be urgently referred for psychiatric treatment. Robertson, 28, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday accused of murdering his partner, 29-year-old Katherine ‘’Katie’’ Haley, at Diggers Rest on Friday. His lawyer, Sharon Healey, asked that Mr Robertson be seen urgently by a forensic psychiatric nurse. “I’m concerned about his mental state,” Ms Healey said. Robertson looked down except when the magistrate spoke. Ms Healey said she was concerned Mr Robertson may self-harm and that he was having “suicidal ideations”. He was charged with murder in an out-of-sessions court hearing on Saturday night, and said he had cuts to his arm. Ms Haley, 29, was found dead by emergency services in Fairfield Crescent, Diggers Rest, about 11pm on Friday. Mr Robertson was arrested in Sunbury just before 1am on Saturday, about 10 kilometres from the address. In a Facebook tribute, one distraught friend of the dead woman said her “heart breaks for such a beautiful person and mother gone too soon. “I will miss your face and all our nail dates, RIP forever beautiful. Katie Haley shine bright.” Ms Haley worked at Castello’s Victorian Tavern in Gisborne and had previously worked as a hairdresser. This is Mr Robertson’s first time in custody.

Lancefield Equestrian Group is preparing to host a state championship horse riding competition this weekend, after triumphing in the event last year. On March 17 and 18, Lancefield Park will be the scene of Horse Riding Clubs Association of Victoria 2018 Mustad Saddleworld Top Teams Trophy Combined Training – a two-day competition featuring Victoria’s best dressage and showjumping competitors. Lancefield Equestrian Group committee member Hayley Drummond said the club had been preparing to host the event for nearly 12 months. The committee has undertaken earthworks
to prepare the area where the competition will be held, on the south side of Lancefield Park off Millers Lane. Riders will be travelling from all over Victoria to compete and will camp at the park overnight on Friday and Saturday. Lancefield Equestrian Group has three teams in the championships. Ms Drummond said it would be a great weekend for horse fans with events running from 8am on Saturday through to 4pm on Sunday. The event is open to the public. Entry is free. Serena Seyfort
VicRoads has asked drivers to be patient and take extra care when driving on a 1.2 kilometre damaged section of Kilmore-Lancefield Road near Lancemore Hill. Work on the uneven road has been delayed by the discovery of a federally protected grass species. VicRoads said the current reduced speed limit of 60km/h will remain until repairs to the road surface can be completed, which should begin next financial year. Go slow for autum tree show By Serena Seyfort Parking and speed restrictions are soon to be enforced in Macedon to help cope with an impending influx of autumn visitors. Macedon Ranges council is also preparing to increase its patrols and services during the popular tourism season. Parking along the famous Honour Avenue will be prohibited between 9am-5pm starting from Friday, March 30, and the road’s speed limit will drop to 40 kilometres per hour. Visitors will be directed to park at the nearby
Tony Clarke Reserve and to walk back to see the coloured display. Temporary traffic conditions are estimated to continue until Monday, April 30, but dates may be adjusted, according to Macedon Ranges council. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the council was catering to the area’s continually growing volume of visitors during the autumn season. “We’ve been monitoring the increase in visitors over the last few years,” she said. “Each year we look at how we can improve on our strategies.”

Cr Anderson said the council’s efforts to manage traffic were based on feedback from local authorities and the community. “We’re also encouraging visitors to extend their stay in the region and explore the many other attractions,” she said. A visitor information marquee will be set up
in Centennial Park on weekends to encourage visitors to attend other parts of the Macedon Ranges. The council is also planning to more frequently clean public toilets and empty street bins, and there will be increased patrols by the council local laws officers to enforce parking restrictions. Hear’s to new technology A Woodend scientist is behind a new hearing technology that aims to eliminate travel and costs associated with managing hearing impairment. Dr Elaine Saunders is the cofounder and managing director of Blamey Saunders hears, a company which last week launched Facett – a new self-fit hearing aid. Dr Saunders said the new design enabled users to easily acquire and manage hearing aids from home. Users can test their hearing over the internet and then be mailed a personalised hearing aid based on the results. “Then using their phone or their computer they can personalise them a bit further if they want – or we can do it for them over the internet,” Dr Saunders said. She said the equipment was simple enough for older and less-technologically apt people to navigate.
“It’s much easier than doing your banking.” The device also does not rely on disposable batteries, like many hearing aids, but is recharged overnight. The Woodend resident has always been passionate about helping people hear, but said living on a rural property had definitely inspired her to develop a product that would benefit people living with limited access to services. She said studies showed cost and distance were the main barriers behind people not seeking help for their hearing, which could increase feelings of isolation. The company has launched the device following a collaboration with Extel Technologies, RMIT and Swinburne Universities and federal and Victorian government support. A Sunbury teenager is preparing to take to the stage at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for the second year running. Falce said the show would be his second appearance at the Melbourne festival with his two mates, who he met through a Melbourne University comedy group. intersection upgrade and work was expected to start this month. “We’re getting on with this important upgrade to remove a bottleneck which has frustrated the community for years,” Mr Bull said. The roundabout will be replaced with traffic lights, turning lanes, pedestrian crossings and bike lanes. Work to relocate services at the intersection, including power, gas and water pipes and phone lines, is planned to begin in March.
Two long-awaited infrastructure projects for Sunbury are taking off this month. Work is about to begin at the notorious intersection of Gap Road and Horne Street to replace the roundabout with traffic lights, while construction has just begun on Sunbury’s $19 million global learning centre. Sunbury MP Josh Bull last week announced that Winslow Constructors had been contracted to carry out the $6.4 million
“To minimise disruption and inconvenience for the community, one lane will remain open in all directions at the intersection with the majority of these works taking place between 9.30am and 3.30pm,” a spokesman from Mr Bull’s office told Star Weekly. “The speed limit on all approaches to the intersection will be 40 kilometres per hour during construction.” The state government said construction was expected to be completed by late in the year. On March 2, work to build the Hume Global
Learning Centre at Macedon Street in Sunbury began. Hume mayor Geoff Porter said the beginning of the long-awaited project was a momentous occasion for the town. “Today we saw years of hard work on plans, designs, advocacy and community consultation come to fruition with the commencement of works on this community facility,” Cr Porter said. Romsey will offer the opportunity to take a trip back in time while supporting local community groups this Saturday. Romsey Mechanics Institute and Romsey Neighbourhood House are hosting the fourth Romsey Antiques and Collectibles Fair to fundraise for their projects. Furniture, china, glass, vintage linen and accessories, books and prints will be among the items up for sale. Organiser and stallholder Gail Middletown will display pieces from the antiques collection she has acquired over many years. “It started as a hobby and my collection has grown to more than 300 items,” Ms Middletown said. The Romsey resident said the fair provided the perfect chance to show off her collection and chat to others interested in collecting. “It’s lovely to see visitors spot something that they enjoyed in their childhood or remember in their parents’ or grandparents’ home,” she

SPORT Boffey hits maiden century but season ends for Roar Heath Boffey entered the final round of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup season having scored 156 runs for the season. The veteran Sunbury all rounder had batted in a number of different roles, from opening the batting, down to coming in at number 10 throughout the season. Boffey finished day one of the Roar’s final round match against Lancefield on 77 not out, with his side already having claimed first innings points. Having never made a century for the Roar, having made his senior debut in 1995, there was a lot of talk around the club during the week about Boffey finally breaking through. “A few people from the club got into me during the week,” Boffey said. “Knowing I was on 77 not out during the week, it was a bit nerve-wracking.” With his parents, partner and children in
attendance, Boffey finally got the century he had been after. He went on to make 155 off 127 balls, beating his previous highest score of 95 not out made 17 years ago. “It felt really good and we were trying to win the game outright,” he said. “The young kid I was batting with batted really well and we got off to a good start and the runs kept going.” Boffey said it was extra special having his family at the game, as they don’t usually attend games. Boffey has opener Stephen Treweek to partly thank for his century, with the opener having to leave early on day one of the match meaning Boffey was promoted up the order. “I wasn’t expecting to open with our usual opener having to leave early,” he said. “If he had have hung around, I wouldn’t have opened the batting.
“We’ve been pushing a few kids up, which meant I’ve been batting down the order. I got another chance with Stevie leaving early.” Boffey said he thought his form with the bat had been okay all season, he was just going out to good shots before Christmas. The Roar had to settle for first innings points, with a stubborn Lancefield digging in during their second innings, ending the Roar’s finals chances. The Roar finished sixth in what has been an up and down season for the club. “It was a bit disappointing to miss out on finals,” Boffey said. “With the players we had leave for different reasons throughout the season, we decided to push up some of the kids. “We had a few play from our under-15s and under-17s and gave them a go in the top grade.” Tara Murray

Ashfield makes it count By Tara Murray It’s finals joy for Ashfield, but heartbreak for East Sunbury in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade competition. The two teams were among three sides fighting for two spots, and they had mixed results on Saturday in the final round of the season. Ashfield had all but sealed their spot heading into the final round, but they made sure of it on Saturday. Chasing Gisborne’s 194, Ashfield never looked in trouble during the run chase finishing 7-274. Corey Woolley ensured his side got the win with a well timed 118, his first century. Dylan Caruana and Mace Green both provided some good support. The win means Ashfield finished third and face St Anthonys this weekend for a spot in the
grand final. It’s the first time Ashfield has played finals since 2013-14 when it claimed the C-grade premiership. St Anthonys ended East Sunbury’s finals hopes on Saturday. The Thunder needed a win in the final round and hoped that Eynesbury suffered a loss to Macedon. With the Eagles losing it came down to whether the Thunder could chase down St Anthonys 272. The Thunder had a lot of players get starts, with seven players scoring between 20 and 33, but no one was able to go on and get the big score needed. In the end they fell short, all out for 233. Youngster Alec Boorsma top scored with 33. Macedon finished its season on a high, defeating finals bound Eynesbury. Having restricted the Eagles to 135 on day one, the Cats resumed at 3-29 on Saturday.

The Cats got the job done with five wickets in hand, going on to make 6-221. Daniel Trotta top scored making 67. The win ensures the Cats avoid relegation, finishing sixth with three wins in what has been a tough year for the club. Wallan claimed the minor premiership with a massive win against Kyneton. Chasing the Tigers 156, the Magpies did it with ease. They chased the runs just one wicket down and then put the foot down looking for extra points to climb ahead of St Anthonys. It worked with the Magpies making 7-404 with Robbie Fowler making 100 not out, as they finished 1.06 points clear at the top of the ladder. The Magpies now host Eynesbury in the first week of the finals. Bacchus Marsh claimed a final round win against Riddell. The result consigned the Bombers to bottom and they look set to be relegated.
A poor start against Glenroy has ended Sunbury’s season in the opening round of the Bowls Victoria pennant, division 1, section 1 finals. Going in as underdogs against Glenroy, which was one of two standout teams during the season, Sunbury was slow out of the blocks and it came back to bite them. They trailed by more than 30 shots early in the piece and were still down by 25 shots at tea time. Despite a comeback later in the day, Sunbury still fell short, losing 84-72. Sunbury’s David Glennon said they were never able to recover after the poor start. “We got within nine shots, but we couldn’t get any closer,” he said. “We were chasing tail straight away. After 12 to 15 ends we were down by 30 shots and it was hard to peg them back from there.” Mark Cowan’s rink won by 10 shots and was the only winning rink for Sunbury. Carla Krizanic’s rink lost by eight shots, Todd Trewarne’s rink lost by 10 shots and Wayne Long’s rink went down by four shots. Glennon said in the end, the season comes down to the two best teams in Glenroy and Moonee Valley. The only other Sunbury side in finals, the fourth side, was also knocked out in the semi finals, losing by 12 shots. Glennon said it had been a slightly disappointing season compared to the last couple. “We haven’t had any team promoted. We had been hopeful of getting one of our division 3 teams promoted to close the gap between teams, but we’ve still got the gulf between the top team and lower teams,” he said. It was better news for Sunbury’s Brad Janner who is through to the next stage of the Champion of Champions tournament. Having claimed the Sunbury championship, Janner faced the other club championships from the region. Last week he defeated Brunswick’s Ian Ewing in the final 25-17, to move on the next stage that will be held in Bendigo in April. Tara Murray

Woodend ready for finals By Tara Murray Woodend is hoping it can continue its good form in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup finals. Having won its last three matches, Woodend enters the finals as the form team with the exception of Bacchus Marsh which went through the season undefeated. Woodend got a small test of what finals will be like over the last two weekends, facing two-time reigning premier Gisborne, in virtually an elimination final. Whichever team won the match would seal a finals spot, while a loss would all but end the other’s finals hopes. The Dragons made a more than competitive 239 on day one. Woodend started well before slipping to 3-67. A partnership between skipper Adam Johnstone and Nick Smith put Woodend to within sight of the win. The middle and lower order did the job, with Woodend finishing 7-274. Injured Woodend coach Michael Nalesnyik was thrilled to have sealed a finals spot. “It’s good to make sure we’re in the finals mix and we knocked out one of the good sides in the process.” Johnstone top scored with 108, which included 17 fours and one six. Nalesnyik said it was a perfectly timed innings from Johnstone. “It’s the most free flowing innings I’ve seen from him,” he said. “He had to leave at 5pm to go to work, so he made his 100 and then went to work. “He was about 60 and then he put his foot down and the flood gates opened. He hit the 100 with a few minutes to spare.” Woodend faces Riddell this weekend for a spot in the grand final. The teams split their two contests this season, with Woodend winning the two-dayer. They enter the finals on the back of three straight wins and back themselves in if they continue to show the form they had over the last month. “I suppose it’s a good habit to get into, that winning habit,” Nalesnyik said. “We’re all enjoying our cricket and it’s a great bunch of guys,” he said. “All the teams in the finals have two or three really good players and we think we go pretty deep. “There’s a few guys who haven’t hit their peak yet.” Bacchus Marsh will face Romsey in the other final, with Romsey doing enough to seal fourth spot despite a final round loss to the Bulls. The Bulls won that game with ease having made 324 in their first innings. Romsey made 113 in reply, before the Bulls were bowled out for 190 in their second innings. Riddell sealed second with a win against Sunbury United, which also consigned United to relegation after finishing bottom. Sunbury and Diggers Rest Bulla were the other winners on Saturday.

Gisborne into Grand Final Gisborne’s hopes of a second straight Central Highlands Bowls top division title remain alive with the side winning through to the Grand Final on Saturday. After claiming the minor premiership, Gisborne was forced to make the grand final the hard way after losing to Kyneton Golf in the semi finals. On Saturday, Gisborne proved too strong for the Bacchus Marsh Gold in the preliminary final. Gisborne won two rinks, on the way to the 91 (16)-82 (2) win. Sam Boslem’s rink had a one shot win, while Graham Quaife’s rink had the best result of the day winning 30-22 over Phil Minniti. Matthew Bacon and Darren Fletcher had to settle for draws against Justin Webster and Shannon Clements respectively. The result sets up a grand final between the last two title winners, Gisborne and Kyneton Golf. The last time the two teams met, Gisborne had a massive 124 (18)-81 (0) win, while Golf had a 15 shot win back in round three. In division 2, Kyneton’s run continued with a strong win against Diggers Rest. Kyneton winning 86 (14)-57 (2), to set up a grand final match up with Gisborne Red. If Kyneton take out the title, it would have done it after finishing the regular season in fourth. Kyneton has two teams through to the grand finals with Kyneton Red through to the division 3 grand final. Red defeated Romsey in the preliminary final and now face Trentham in the grand final. Garry Wilson has been surprised by the reaction he’s received over the last two weekends as he took to the field for his 400th cricket match. Just the second Sunbury United player to play 400 games, behind his good mate Kevin Cartwright, Wilson said he was humbled by messages he’s received. “I’ve been a little taken aback by the interest,” he said. “My grandkids put up a banner last weekend and there’s been a fair bit on Facebook. “It’s really pleasing the people you meet over 400 games have taken the time to acknowledge the milestone.” Wilson started playing in 1980-81 when the club was still known as Sunbury Centrals and has been part of the club since then. He’s seen plenty of change at the club, which changed its name to Sunbury United in 1982-83.
“The club was Centrals and then it changed to United,” he said. “I’ve been here when we’ve won five or six senior flags and I’ve been here when we’ve been relegated.” Wilson has spent most of his career in the lower grades, describing himself as not the greatest cricketer but a “determined” one. The clear highlights for him has been playing with both his sons in different premiership teams. While taking to the field each week, Wilson has been a big part of the club off the field, including being a past committee member. Each week he’s busy doing the small bits and pieces behind the scenes making sure things are ready for game day. “Someone has to do the back room work and I’ve been involved off field for nearly my whole time I’ve been at the club,” he said. “I just feel a lot of people put in on the field, but not many off field.
“We’re lucky we’ve got a lot of younger people coming through who are prepared to put in the work.” It isn’t just at United his impact has been felt, with Wilson being involved with the Gisborne and District Cricket Association for nearly 30 years. He’s currently an association board member. Wilson said it is an accomplishment to have been involved with the association for so long. With 400 games on the board, the 65-year-old said it might be the end of his career with his side not making finals. “My wife is laughing in the background,” he said about his cricket future. “At this stage I’m going to call it quits, but if they are short I will still play on. “It becomes part of your life.” Tara Murray

Japan’s Camry in cruise control By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring The end of the Australian automobile construction industry is likely to have different effects on each of the three affected companies. Ford has bitten the bullet and discontinued the Falcon, while Holden is gambling on its loyal buyers moving to a German-built Commodore. By contrast, the switch from locally produced to imported Toyota Camrys is likely to be seamless given our feeling that a fair proportion of current owners aren’t even aware their cars were built at the company’s Altona plant. New Camry’s come from Nagoya in Japan. The 2018 Camry is the first sedan to be built on the new Toyota New Global Architecture, which allows the sharing of parts and components among many vehicles across the Toyota range. In the Camry, it allows the car to sit a little bit lower and wider and provide a lower centre of gravity. This, together with a more rigid chassis and enhancements to suspension and steering, combine for significant improvement in driving dynamics. New model names have been introduced. In ascending order of equipment they are Ascent, Ascent Sport, SX and SL. All but the SX come with the option of hybrid power while the SX and SL are available with V6 petrol engines. Prices have been reduced for six of the nine new Camry variants while increases on the other three are more than compensated for by extra features. Camry has long been seen as a conservative car, so it comes as a bit of a surprise to see a much sportier look to the new model. The petrol-only SL has a panoramic sunroof, while the SL Hybrid uses an electric tilt-and-slide moonroof. New Camry engines come with the same capacities as the superseded models, but

have been revised. Outputs from the 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit are marginally down to 133 kW of power and 231 Nm, but significantly up in both the 2.5-litre hybrid and V6 engines. Fuel consumption is down by about 6.5 per cent for the V6 and between 13.5 per cent and 19 cent in the various hybrids. Each engine gets a different transmission, all automatics of course. The 2.5-litre petrol automatic is mated to a conventional six-speed; the hybrid to a CVT; with the V6 having an
eight-speed. There are paddle shifters on the SX and SL models. Standard across the new Camry range are seven airbags; enhanced ABS brakes; pre-collision safety system; autonomous emergency braking; lane departure alert with steering assist; active cruise control; automatic high beam; hill-start assist; trailer sway control; reversing camera; LED headlights and LED daytime running lights. The top spec SL adds blind-spot monitoring; rear cross-traffic alert; rain-sensing wipers: head-up display; and
electro-chromatic interior rear-view mirror while the three higher grades have front and rear parking sensors. The inclusion of autonomous emergency braking and lane departure alert across the range ensures it gets a five-star ANCAP safety rating. Significant improvements in Camry’s looks and performance are sure to appeal to the keen private buyer who wants a comfortable commuter that can be taken for some fun weekend driving.
