Lerderderg dump outrage By Serena Seyfort Cannabis plants, syringes and household and commercial waste are among the piles of rubbish being regularly dumped in Lerderderg State Park. That’s the word of members of community group Bullengarook Landcare Group, who are concerned by the waste polluting their beloved area. Tracey Howell, who lives near the forest’s edge and has walked through the park a couple of times a week for years, said she continuously finds freshly dumped rubbish. “There are regular dumping spots that people use,” Ms Howell said. “I’ve seen all sorts of things in the Pyrete Ranges.”
She said new piles of rubbish – including remnants of cannabis harvests and bags of household rubbish such as clothing – was turfed in the bushland “weekly, on average”. “I don’t know if it’s getting worse – but it’s certainly not getting any better,” she said. Vehicles are not permitted in the park, but offenders have been breaking through locks on the fire access gates. Ms Howell said that before Christmas, several park gates were vandalised and bent in an attempt to stop them from closing. Another concerned Bullengarook Landcare member, who did not want to be named, gave shadow minister for Macedon Amanda Millar a tour through the park earlier this month to see the abandoned waste first-hand.
They arrived at the park’s Hobbs Road carpark to find syringes littering the ground. Along the fire tracks off Fitzgerald and Hobbs roads they found cannabis waste, waste from a household building site and piles of gravel. Mrs Millar said the level of rubbish being consistently dumped showed that current prevention methods clearly were not working. “Bushwalkers should be looking out for snakes and native animals, not dirty syringes discarded on the tracks,” she said. Parks Victoria is responsible for maintaining the state park. Bullengarook Landcare members have been reporting dumping incidents to the authority for years. Parks Victoria area chief ranger Siobhan Rogan said the authority monitored known

hotspots, carried out investigations and enforcement activity, and worked with police on information provided by the public. “We also work with local councils and the EPA where necessary to clean up illegal rubbish dumping,” Ms Rogan said. “Rubbish dumping is unfortunately an ongoing issue in many parks and reserves, however, we are encouraged by the increased community vigilance and reporting.” She said rubbish dumping was “destructive to the environment, a costly and time-consuming exercise to remediate”. Anyone who suspects suspicious behaviour or witnesses illegal dumping can call Parks Victoria on 13 19 63. Offenders can be prosecuted and face a maximum fine of $6342.

Ranges plan deadline extended By Serena Seyfort The state government has extended the time it will take public feedback on its new landscapes protection legislation for the Macedon Ranges following a chorus of disapproval from residents. Comment on the Macedon Ranges Draft Localised Planning Statement (LPS) will be accepted until Monday, March 5 – two weeks after the consultation period was originally scheduled to end. Planning Minister Richard Wynne agreed to extend the time “given the level of community
interest in the draft”, Macedon MP Mary-Anne announced on her Facebook page. The extension has come after weeks of campaigning by local groups against the plans proposed in the draft. Macedon Ranges Residents Association has been vehemently calling for residents to submit feedback opposing the draft and sending a message to the state government that the current plan is “not acceptable” and to “do it again and consult this community”. An estimated 200 residents attended the association’s public meeting on February 13, at which the association resolved to inform the
government that the draft LPS was “completely irreconcilable with the state government’s commitment to protection”. Representatives from the association met Ms Thomas to discuss the plan on Friday. Association secretary Christine Pruneau said the government wanted to fix the draft, which she said needed to be entirely rewritten. The state government has introduced the draft LPS to protect the area from “inappropriate development”, but Ms Pruneau described it as “an urban growth plan of epic proportions” instead of protection. Another residents group, A Forum for
Democratic Renewal, has also been rallying opposition to the state government’s plan. It hosted public forums across the shire to highlight what it perceived as the draft’s lack of protection. Ms Thomas said it was important to recognise that “as a draft, the LPS is subject to the feedback provided” by consultation. She encouraged people to read the LPS and submit feedback. “It is vitally important we get this right,” she said. New drama explodes The Mount Players theatre company is preparing to take to the stage for its first production in 2018. The local group will start the year with Marghanita Laski’s drama The Offshore Island, directed by Cherry Servis. Set in England 10 years after a nuclear explosion, the play centres around a widow and her two children living in an isolated valley that has remained unaffected by the war. The family’s first contact with the happenings of the outside world comes when a group of Americans arrive. At first, the mother and children are delighted and full of gratitude. While the play was written in 1954 – at the height of the Cold War – the story’s concepts are said to still be applicable to life today. The Offshore Island will be performed on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons from March 9 to March 25 at The

A pedestrian crossing is on the way for Aitken Street in Gisborne. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas has announced $350,000 state government funding for safety upgrade as part of the Building our Regions program. Pedestrian lights will be installed on Aitken Street, north of the Hamilton Street roundabout, and zebra crossings will be placed on the service roads on either side. Work is expected to begin in April.

Jane’s champion effort Woodend’s Jane Cozier has been honoured with a 2017 Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Champion Award for her contribution to the local community. Ms Crozier’s outstanding commitment to Macedon Ranges community groups was recognised at a ceremony at Government House earlier this month. Ms Crozier, who has lived in Woodend all her life, has dedicated years to running various clubs and groups. She is the treasurer of Woodend State Emergency Service. “But I’m not a hero,” she said with a laugh. “I don’t go out in the wet.” Ms Crozier was also treasurer of Woodend Tennis Club for 20 of the 32 years that she served on its committee. During that time she
took on the roles of president, vice president and junior co-ordinator, too. Woodend Junior Football Club awarded Ms Crozier with life membership for her contribution to the club. She is currently junior co-ordinator for the Macedon Ranges Tennis Association, and was co-ordinator of Macedon Ranges Basketball Association for 11 years. She also ran Woodend Primary School’s uniform shop for 11 years and helped to establish the school’s parents and friends association. Ms Crozier has passed on her passion – her daughter, Laura, was last month honoured as Macedon Ranges council’s 2018 Young Citizen of the Year.

The new home of Kyneton Men’s Shed is expected to be up and running about June, according to chairman John Mitchell. He said Macedon Ranges council had granted a permit for a shed to be built overlooking Riverwalk Boulevard on land owned by Bupa Aged Care. Mr Mitchell said the group expected construction to start in March.

VicRoads is hosting a drop-in session to discuss safety improvements for Black Forest Drive, at Macedon Community Centre, Tony Clarke Reserve on Monday, March 5 between 5-7pm. Residents can share their experiences of the road and give feedback on improving its safety. The project comes after a cyclist was hit and killed by a car in December. Jacksons Hill site still not sold Serena Seyfort The state government has confirmed Sunbury’s Jacksons Hill is still owned by Victoria University, following speculation that the site had recently been sold. Sunbury MP Josh Bull told Star Weekly Jacksons Hill “cannot” be sold until the master plan that will guide its future use has been completed. The site has been listed on the state government’s Department of Treasury and
Finance website as being ‘prepared for future sale’ for a number of weeks now. Fences have been erected around the site. However, Mr Bull said that the site has not changed hands. “Unfortunately some incorrect information regarding the site has been circulated,” he said. Mr Bull said the site’s status as ‘being prepared for future sale’ was “a formality only”. “The site cannot be sold until the master plan is complete,” he said.

The Sunbury MP said he and planning minister Richard Wynne understood that the site held “a special place in the hearts of Sunbury residents”. “We’ve worked side by side with the
community and listened carefully to its views,” Mr Bull said. “The VPA is now considering all feedback on this draft plan, and a final plan will be produced later this year. “I appreciate that many people in the Sunbury community are keen to see a positive outcome for this site in a timely fashion, and we are working hard to make this happen.” Victorian University stopped using part of Jacksons Hill as a campus in 2009. It is still owns and is responsible for the site.

Help shape the look of a new park in Gisborne
Sunbury and Macedon Ranges communities will come together this Sunday to clean their beloved surroundings. A number of meet-ups are scheduled across the region to observe the national community Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 4. Local group Bullengarook Landcare has organised several local projects, as it has done in previous years. Bullengarook Landcare committee member Tracey Howell has encouraged more locals to join the cleaning efforts. “Bullengarook Landcare will be involved again this year at a number of sites in the area such as the Recreation Reserve and roadside, and would love other groups in Bullengarook to get involved,” she said.

Romsey’s own community health centre and ecotherapy park are almost ready to open. Work to transform the former Romsey Primary School site on Main Street has been under way since December and is expected to finish in late April, according to Macedon Ranges council. The site, which had been unused for more than a decade, is soon to become a Cobaw Community Health centre and the beginnings of Romsey Ecotherapy Park. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the council

The 43rd annual Woodend Lions Art Show will run over the March long weekend to raise funds for the Lions’ community projects and school scholarships. A collection of artworks from local and travelled artists will be on display and for sale. This year’s show will include a raffle to win a painting by Macedon Ranges artist Helen Cottle. Woodend Lions president Barry McDonald said many local individuals and businesses contributed the show’s prizes as a way of giving back to the community. The Start Running Program helps those new to running complete a 5 kilometre run in eight weeks and extends to a 10 kilometre run in 13 weeks. Sight is fairly obvious, if your house looks good, if your garden looks good and yes, that front mat, if it looks good then the sense of sight is satisfied. A far less obvious sense when selling a property and dealing with the inside of the house, is smell. Smell is a sense that at times we overlook and here, I am going to make myself somewhat unpopular. r Smokers! r. If you are in the habit of smoking inside your home, the moment prospective purchasers walk through your front door they will be able to smell stale smoke. Please smoke outside, wash curtains, steam clean carpets and wash walls. The smell of cigarette smoke goes into everything. Pets, we love our pets, we want our pets to be inside. Please bear in mind, pet smells are not necessarily appealing to everyone. Purchasers who are asthmatic will find pet hair disturbing and can be inflicted with an asthma attack. Open windows, carefully vacuum, remove pet beds and kitty litters. Another smell which at times is over powering is cleaning products or incense and candles. Please use harsh cleaning products in moderation, eucalyptus oil is pleasant and very eff f ective. Strong smelling candles ff and incense can also be very over powering and create the impression that you are hiding something. One simple candle is sufficient. Cannons ready to fire again By Tara Murray The Calder Cannons are again looking to have a strong side as the second TAC Cup girl’s season gets under way this weekend. The Cannons had a brilliant first season, claiming a premiership on the back of an undefeated season and having three players drafted to AFLW. This year they’ve retained a lot of premiership players and added some more young talent. New coach Paul Tilley said it would be interesting to see how they backed up this year. “We had some outstanding players and [Chloe] Molloy, [Monique] Conti and [Sarah] Dargan were all drafted,� he said. “We’ve got some good quality players that are stepping up this year. “I think the program that was set up with Alicia Eva, Pauline [Leslie] and Kytey [Ian Kyte], is so we have some flow for the next few years and have some pretty good footballers coming through.� Tilley said the girls were excited to take to the field in an expanded competition of nine rounds. “It’s really refreshing to have them. It’s not sheep station stuff, it’s not the be all and end all of it.� He said there could be several Cannons players among the mix come draft time again this year, including a few surprise packets. The Cannons have three players in the AFL Academy, which identifies the top talent in the

country. Madison Prespakis and Molly Warburton are both considered possible draftees this year, while Georgia Patrikios is also in the academy as one of the best 16-year-olds. “With women’s football and expansion of the new teams, there’s opportunities for a lot of girls to get drafted,� Tilley said. “They have to have a bit of luck and present when they need to.� Tilley replaced Alicia Eva as coach, with Eva moving to Sydney to play for Greater Western Sydney in the AFLW. He said it was an easy decision to put his hand up for the role this season after helping out with the side last year. “It’s so different coaching the girls,� he said. “You’re learning every day. The Cannons have had a girls program for quite a while, so they know a lot about it and I rely a lot on them. “There is an advantage being here last year.� The Cannons start their season on Sunday against Murray Bushrangers in Yarrawonga. Tilley said while development of the girls is the main focus this year, getting a few wins on the board would be good. “I think everyone wants to win and even though it’s not our main aim I would still like to see the girls win and perform well enough to win. “I wouldn’t mind having another crack [at the final] for the girls’ sake. The further you go the more attention people pay to them and look at them.�

Tight at the top in race for McIntyre Cup finals spots

The race for the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup finals could hardly be closer, with just 0.04 of a point separating fourth and fifth heading into the final round. Every wicket and run will be vital, with four of the top five sides facing off. Ladder-leader Bacchus Marsh will face fourth-placed Romsey, while third-placed Woodend will face fifth-placed Gisborne. Romsey moved into the top four for the first time this season with victory against Rupertswood on Saturday. Resuming at 1-40 in reply to Rupo’s 154, Romsey looked to get the job done quickly. Besides a period when it lost 3-9, going from 1-85 to 4-94, Romsey looked in control all day. It made the runs five wickets down before going on to make 242. Skipper Ben Way led the way with 86, while Chris Burkett hit 59.
Romsey sent Rupo back in searching for an outright win, but Rupo held strong, finishing 4-132. Romsey’s win moved it above Gisborne, despite the Dragons beating Sunbury. A century to skipper Jarryd Vernon was the key for the Dragons after they looked in trouble early chasing Sunbury’s 136. Resuming at 2-6, the Dragons were quickly 4-18 before Vernon and Jay King rescued the innings. They put on 153 to guide the side past the needed total before they were bowled out for 239. Vernon made 127 off 111 balls, including 21 fours and one six, while King was watchful in his 23 off 117 balls. Sunbury finished 0-77 in its second innings, with the result ending its finals hopes. Bacchus Marsh sealed top spot with a strong win against Riddell in a top-of-the-table clash.
Resuming at 0-32 in reply to the Bombers’ 130, the Bulls were five wickets down when they hit the winning runs. The Bulls were 5-177 when both sides decided to end the match, with James Lidgett 74 not out. The Bombers need a win in the final round to ensure they remain in second spot. The battle at the other end of the ladder will also go into the final round, with the bottom three teams separated by less than six points. Lancefield moved from bottom, and the relegation zone, with victory against Diggers Rest Bulla. The Burras resumed at 4-38 chasing the Tigers’ 127. They were all out for 95. United fails to kick off By Tara Murray Sunbury United’s first official hit-out of 2018 has ended in defeat. Looking to start the year on a high and gain some momentum ahead of the FFV state league 3 north-west season, United fell short against lower ranked Spring Hills in the first round of the FFA Cup. Things started well for United when Jayden Mercieca scored a penalty in the seventh minute to put the home side ahead. The Stallions levelled the scores in the 32nd minute and hit the front in the 63rd with what was the match-winning goal, knocking United out of the Cup competition. Speaking before the match, United director Daniel Moore said they had been looking forward to testing themselves. “It’s a local derby of sorts,” he said. “It’s the first taste of competitive football since last year and everyone is getting ready to go.”
Moore said they had managed to keep a core group of players from last season, while they had looked to add more experience to the line-up. Steve Everett, Archie Sweeney, Muhamad Chawk and Mohammed El Turkmani are among the new players for United. Several more signings are expected to be finalised in the next few weeks. Moore said this year, the second under Lino Grech, was about getting the right mix. “It’s been about getting the balance right and we’ve added some experienced heads to build on what we did last year,” he said. Moore said they were hoping to move away from the bottom end of the table. After two straight relegations, United finished ninth last season. “This year we want to give a good push to promotion and be in contention. “We are being quite ambitious,” he said. Gisborne’s FFA Cup campaign is also over, losing to St Kevins Old Boys 3-1.

As Australia continues its preparations for the World Cup in June, Sunbury United is hoping it will inspire children to take up the sport. United had more than 250 juniors last season and more than 300 players across all its teams and wants to increase those numbers. Director Daniel Moore said they wanted to make the most of the Sunbury population boom. “We want to keep building numbers and with Sunbury growing and new estates, there’s a lot of untapped talent in Sunbury.” Moore said they were looking for players for all age groups. Hanging Rock may not have come away with the trophy, but the girls were still winners in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s under-15 competition. Playing in their first season, the Heelers girls went into the season keen to have a hit and a bit of fun, but they well and truly exceeded expectations, finishing second on the ladder and contesting Friday night’s grand final. The Heelers made 8-64 from their 20 overs in the grand final, before Bacchus Marsh made 7-80 in reply to claim the title. Hanging Rock is the smallest club in the GDCA with just one senior side, which plays in the lowest grade, and three junior sides, including the girls team. It’s only the third season the club has had junior teams. Heelers president Todd Place said they were all very excited to have the side make the grand final. “It’s passed all our expectations,” he said. “We tried to get a team up last season but only had four players so they played with the boys in the junior ranks. “Most of the girls hadn’t played before and they’ve been stars all year. “We only had five girls at the beginning. Now we have nine. They’re such a tight-knit group.” The grand final caps off a good season for the girls, with four players representing the association. Place said the club, which was formerly known as Hesket, was in a good spot going forward. “The club is going well financially and we’ve got a new pitch and work is being done on the club rooms so the girls have their own area. “Hopefully we can have some more junior teams next season.” Overall, it’s been a mixed season for the Heelers. Kangaroos on the hop
Umpires to target 200
By Tara Murray Sunbury Kangaroos’ women’s side is on the move, with the team to play in the Essendon District Football League this year. Having kicked off their football in the AFL Goldfields competition last season, the Kangaroos decided to change leagues during the off season. Kangaroos coach Allan Walters said it was an easy decision to change competitions. “We’ve definitely made the move so there is less travel,” he said. “The girls last year expressed concerns about travelling to Ballarat every second week and we decided to put in for the EDFL and it’s come through.” Walters said the new competition would provide some challenges. The EDFL season kicks off on April 8 and will be a 14-round competition plus finals. “Just like last year, it will be the great unknown again,” Walters said. “We don’t know what we’re coming up against … I believe there is seven or eight new sides.” Walters said they had managed to keep most of last year’s playing group, while picking up a few players. He said they were still looking for players of any ability who wanted to join the side. “We always welcome new players. Last season we had up to 29 girls on the list, but in the last final could only field 21 players due to injuries and travel.” The side currently trains Monday and Thursday nights, but will move to Tuesday and Thursdays once the current cricket season is over. With football continuing to grow, the Riddell Umpires Association has launched Target 200 – an initiative aimed at attracted 200 umpires this season. The association provides umpires for senior and junior Riddell District Football League matches, along with club 18 games and AFL Goldfields women’s and girls matches that fall in the playing region. Association recruitment officer Billy Mitchell said the association thought 200 umpires was a good number to meet umpiring needs this season. They had about 160 umpires last season. “There’s a growing number of games in mens, womens and juniors, so having 200 umpires would put us in a good position,” he said. Anyone is welcome to a training session to see whether officiating is for them. “It’s great for players, ex-players, coaches or anyone interested in getting included,” Mitchell said. “It’s a fantastic way to get involved in community football, get fit, earn money and challenge yourself.” The association will have a come and try day on March 7 at Salesian College, Rupertswood, in an attempt to get Sunbury and Macedon Ranges umpires on board.
