Flash mob to rock the Rock It’s hoped hundreds of Macedon Ranges residents will unite at Hanging Rock to join in a mass dance performance next month. Everyone in the shire – people of all ages and dance abilities – is invited to be part of the first ever flash mob at the iconic landmark to celebrate its place in the community. The event, Too Many Mirandas, will also honour Joan Lindsay’s famous Picnic at Hanging Rock – a story that has become part of the Rock’s folklore for 50 years. Dressed as Lindsay’s lead character Miranda, participants will perform choreography by artists Asking for Trouble, to a musical score the pair has developed for the occasion. The choreographers will run four community dance workshops and classes at 10 local schools in the lead-up to the mass performance on February 24. But people can also just turn up and learn the dance on the day, says Macedon Ranges council cultural development leader Robyn Till. “It’s more about the fun than getting the moves absolutely right,” Ms Till said. Macedon Ranges council developed the idea for the community celebration, which is being funded by a $20,000 grant from Creative Victoria. Hard road for Lancefield By Serena Seyfort Lancefield residents will have to deal with the “dangerous” state of the Lancefield-Kilmore Road for some time yet. Upgrades to the section near Lancemore Hill have been delayed while VicRoads gets approval to remove two endangered varieties of grassland near the road. VicRoads northern region regional director Brian Westley told Star Weekly the upgrades were “programmed for 2018-19”.
According to an email VicRoads sent to an inquiring resident, who posted it on Facebook, “the works were due to commence prior to November 2017”. The email said it would be 12-18 months before work could start on the damaged highway. Fed-up Macedon Ranges residents continue to battle to improve the road’s harsh conditions. Resident Andrew Moore said the “quite dangerous” road was “definitely” damaging cars, even with reduced speed limits in place. The 100km/h speed limit has been dropped
to 80km/h and 60km/h at certain points for almost a year, according to Mr Moore, who uses the road every week. He said he couldn’t believe the upgrades were taking so long considering the road’s poor condition. “When you’re on the road, you’re really looking for options about where you can actually plant your car in the lane without causing damage to it or going across the other side of the road,” he said. Local cyclist Steve Xerri said the road was
particularly a concern for the cyclists using the road. “Because there’s so much damage, cars have to veer,” he said. “ Then, when cyclists are trying to avoid a pothole or a rough area, they’ve got to move into the path of vehicles.” Mr Westley said the upgrades would provide a new asphalt surface. The protected grassland vegetation delaying the upgrades has been identified as natural temperate and western (basalt) plains, according to VicRoads.

Sunbury parking fix ‘ridiculous’ By Serena Seyfort Further parking restrictions are proposed for Sunbury CBD as Hume council tries to tackle traffic problems. The council is proposing to restrict existing one and two-hour parking spaces on Evans and O’Shanassy streets to 30 minutes between 9am and 5pm on weekdays and 9am and noon on Saturdays. Reducing currently unrestricted parking spaces on Barkly Street and Macedon Street service road to two hours from 9am to 5pm
on weekdays and on Saturday mornings has also been suggested. A three-hour maximum is proposed for currently unrestricted disabled parks. The council is taking feedback on these proposals as part of a traffic management study. Sunbury Business Association treasurer Sylvia Unferdorben told Star Weekly she would be advising the council that the suggested restrictions were “just ridiculous”. “We need fewer parking restrictions – not more,” Ms Unferdorben said.

Narrowing through lanes and lengthening existing parking spaces on Brook and Evans streets to reduce conflict between reversing vehicles and through traffic are also being suggested in the Proposed Traffic Management Plan. Hume council will run a public information and consultation session to discuss the traffic plan on Tuesday, January 30, between 6pm and 7pm at Sunbury Memorial Hall, Stawell Street. Feedback is also being taken online at hume.vic.gov.au.

Macedon Ranges sports facilities will receive upgrades this year. The state government has distributed $400,000 from the Community Sports Infrastructure Fund to Gisborne, Kyneton and Malmsbury.
Diggers Rest residents no longer have to drive to Sunbury to access a doctor. The town’s first medical clinic, Diggers Rest Medical Centre, opened its doors to the public last week. The general practice offers bulk-billing to all patients with a medicare card. A dentist, pharmacy and pathology services are also located on site. The centre is open from 8am-8pm on weekdays, and from 8.30am-4pm on Saturdays. Practice principal Dr Elijah Botros formerly won the Australian General Practice Ltd award for Best Solo Practice in Victoria when he was running a clinic in Bendigo for seven years. Dr Botros said the new centre was “really trying to meet the needs of the local community”. Residents were invited to officially celebrate the clinic’s opening with a barbecue and kids activities outside the centre on Saturday. Facebook users have responded positively to the opening of the new clinic. “I can’t wait. This is so exciting for Diggers Rest,” one user wrote. “So much easier than travelling to Sunbury,” another commented. A grass fire broke out near Vaughan Street in the Nook, Sunbury about 5.19pm last Wednesday, January 17. Fourteen trucks responded to the fire, from both the CFA and MFB. A helicopter was used to drop water on parts of the fire that were difficult to access from the ground. The fire was brought under control at 6.05pm. The cause of the fire has not been revealed.

A Sunbury dog owner has been fined $800 and disqualified from caring for a dog for 10 years after being found guilty of animal cruelty before Broadmeadows Magistrates Court. In December, the defendant was found guilty of neglecting to stop unreasonable pain and suffering being caused and failing to provide appropriate treatment for a dog between December 2016 and February 2017.

Duck, then slow down Motorists are being reminded to slow down and give right of way to ducks on a Sunbury road. A sign has been erected at Canterbury Avenue to alert people that ducks frequently cross the road in the wake of resident concerns. Hume councillor Jack Medcraft said the council had received a number of complaints
that ducks were being run over and killed in the street. He said the council wanted to remind drivers that they should be mindful of the wildlife, rather than driving through without care. “I’m a protector of ducks,” he said. “Hopefully we see a change.” Serena Seyfort

A liquor store on Cradle Road, Diggers Rest was robbed in broad daylight last Wednesday, January 17. The owner said three men carried alcohol valued at $300-$400 out the door at 11.47am without paying, before fleeing in a car. The men were caught on CCTV and police are investigating.

An overarching arts and culture strategy is being devised for the Macedon Ranges, and the council is calling on residents for help. The plan will guide the council’s promotion, support and investment in arts and culture – from larger events to library programs – over the next decade. The council’s co-ordinator of art and culture Robyn Till said the strategy would aim to sew together much of the work that is already happening across Macedon Ranges.

“We’ve got a lot, a lot of artists that live in this region who do contribute to the economy and I don’t think they’re properly recognised for it,” Ms Till said. “It would be good to have that in the strategy as an evident part of the local economy.”
Ms Till said the process would look at how the community could work together to support the artists who support the community. “So we can get a vibrant community happening, rather than all working independently.” She said the council wanted to expand on current assets to connect with other cultural tourism regions. The council’s director of community wellbeing Karen Stevens has asked residents to consider the variety of roles art and culture plays in their everyday life.
“Our shire is a hive of creative activity, with active historical societies, dance groups, choirs, art groups, events and arts-based businesses all participating and contributing,” she said. “We’re looking to get a comprehensive overview of people’s ideas, challenges and priorities that will support our local arts and cultural economy and contribute to a sense of place.” To contribute to the strategy visit mrsc.vic. gov.au/yoursay or a council customer service centre before Thursday, February 1. The draft strategy is expected to be released for public comment in April.
The very art of Kyneton Kyneton. Jessie Stanley has been working with Friends of the Botanic Gardens on the history of the gardens and local geology. Artist David Attwood will put on a performance among the cafes of Kyneton’s main street. Kyneton Contemporary co-director Kent Wilson said the event’s theme would be “Force Fields”, with action and location at the heart of the art. He said the artworks tapped “into the gravitational pull of forces toward and within the regional town of Kyneton”. The triennial will run from April 14 to 18. More information can be found at kynetoncontemporary.com, though precise dates and times have yet to be released.
Kyneton’s creative spirit will be ablaze in April when the town is transformed into an art installation. Showcasing central Victoria’s cultural and environmental qualities, Kyneton Contemporary Art Triennial 2018 will inhabit unexpected places throughout Kyneton through the mediums of sound work, sculptural installation, print media, drawing, performance and new media. Kyneton Contemporary Inc has commissioned artists from around the country to create the unique event, which is being funded by more than $20,000 from Creative Victoria and Macedon Ranges council. For months the artists have been spending time in Kyneton and collaborating with local groups to better understand the area’s history. Artist Georgie Mattingley has been learning from residents at BUPA Aged Care as he researches personal histories from post-war

Good news for young residents By Serena Seyfort
Annual show is classic rock John Van Groningen (pictured) is gearing up for the Macedon Ranges and District Motor Club’s 2018 Picnic at Hanging Rock Car Show. The annual event began as a casual get together for local motoring clubs more than 30 years ago, and has grown to become one of the largest annual classic motoring events in Australia. Club secretary Graham Williams said members were expecting more than 1000 classic cars to converge at the rock next month, accompanied by a similar number of people. The club has spent 12 months planning for the unique occasion. Vehicles that are 25 years and older will park on Hanging Rock’s race tracks so visitors can wander through a cavalcade of motoring history. Anyone is welcome to enter classic, vintage, veteran or special interest vehicles, including trucks, bikes and rods. The cost is that of entering Hanging Rock Reserve - $20 for a car and $5 for a motorbike. The car show will take place on Sunday, February 11, from 7.30am-3.30pm. Young people can continue to benefit from Macedon Ranges’ Learning in Community and Youth Engage Program for the next three years. The two programs, which have encouraged and supported youth to better their personal and professional wellbeing since 2015, will keep running through to 2020 thanks to state government funding. Kyneton Community and Learning Centre’s Learning in Community program has received $120,000 from the state’s Engage! program. The centre offers activities and training workshops in areas such as hospitality, event planning and risk management for anyone aged 12-25 years. The Young Engage Program, run by Macedon Ranges council, has been given a $95,000 grant. It offers weekly programs, events, activities, mentoring and workplace training for young people aged 12-18 years. The group meets in Kyneton on Tuesday evenings and in Gisborne on Wednesdays. The program provides social activities such as movie nights, as well as professional help such as resume writing classes. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas urged local youth to take advantage of these opportunities. “I encourage more young people to get involved with the Kyneton Community and Learning Centre and Macedon Ranges Youth Engage Problem,” Ms Thomas said. “These fantastic programs offer hands-on experiences for participants to achieve their personal and professional goals.” To get involved visit www.kynetonclc.org.au and bit.ly/2DvSV6l

By Tara Murray Georgia Kerr has been enjoying a big 18 months as she continues to rise up the cricket ranks. She started playing cricket for Gisborne Cricket Club after she and a few school mates decided they would take their schoolground skills and use them in a regular competition. She quickly made her mark. After being part of representative sides since under-14s, Kerr is testing her abilities against the best female cricketers in the state. Last season, she joined Victoria Premier Cricket side Prahran while still playing in one of the lower grades with the Dragons. Having made her Premier XI debut last season, she’s spent this season trying to cement her spot in the top Prahran side. “It’s been really good playing down there,” she said. “I love it down there and the girls are really good … I get to see how they go about things. I’ve got to know them and it’s even better than last season as I’m used to playing with them. “I’ve got a really good coach, Carl Sandri. I’ve been talking to Carl about what I need to do to play firsts … I’m going to take every opportunity.” In October last year, Kerr was named emergency for the Victorian under-18 team for a second straight year. The first time she got a call-up to the team, this time she wasn’t so lucky. While Kerr said she would have loved to have been part of the state team again, she still sees the experience as a positive one. “The coaches were amazing and being able to train with them helps enormously,” she said. She finished her junior representative career by captaining the Central Highlands under-18 girls at last year’s state championships. She was one of five Gisborne girls in the team. The Highlanders finished third in their pool. Kerr said the championships were a little different as they signified the end of one part of her cricket journey. “It was a bit sad,” she said. “The team was really good and all the games were a real team effort. There were a lot of girls who performed well, so overall the depth was really good. “Some of the Gisborne girls hadn’t played before … it was really good to play with them.” For now, Kerr’s focus will be on continuing to playing for Prahran and Gisborne, but her eyes are on the future and hopefully playing for Victoria and beyond. “It is the plan,” she said. “It’s definitely the dream. I’m going to put in the work and make sure I take all the opportunities I can.” Earlier this month, she equalled her top score by making 92 not out for Gisborne.

The Gisborne and District Cricket Association finished third in division 1 at Bendigo Country Week, but the week wasn’t without drama. The GDCA split its matches 2-2 to finish third after the pool matches. On Thursday night, Goulburn Murray, which finished second, was one of two teams sensationally disqualified for playing too many players and the GDCA was promoted to the grand final. Goulburn Murray appealed and was reinstated to the grand final two hours later.

Armstead, who played junior football with Hadfield, comes to the role with an extensive professional sporting background. He replaces Marc Turri. Some of the best young talent in the country converged on Sunbury United last week for the UK Football Trials Australia tryout. The trials, which involves coaches and scouts from England visiting Australia to look at possible players, attracts players from all over Australia. United’s Paul Di Blasi said the trials had expanded dramatically in the past 12 months. Last year, United became just the second club to host the trials. “There was 90 try out at the senior trials [13 to 28-year-olds] and 70 per cent of them have come from overseas. And there was the junior event as well. “There’s kids from Perth Glory and Western Sydney Wanderers youth league sides that have come and players from the Australian under-16 team.
“Scouts have come from division 2 clubs right through to premier league clubs, as well as Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City.” Manchester United Soccer Schools’ international head coach Robin Van Der Laan was among the coaches at the trials. Blasi said he expected at least half a dozen players would get scouted, after a handful were selected last time round. Among those trying out were about dozen local players who are part of United’s new academy. As well as the trials, the coaches took about 100 local kids for a free community event on Monday, giving them and the local coaches the opportunity to learn from some of the best coaches in the world. Desperate Lancefield fights hard to avoid relegation Lancefield knows a win this weekend will go a long way to assuring the side stays in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. Sitting eighth, the Tigers are just under three points clear of bottom side Diggers Rest Bulla, so every win is vital in the run home to avoid relegation. No match is more vital than the current game against Rupertswood, which sits 1.11 points behind the Tigers. Tigers coach Luke Barker said they know what they are up against. “At the start of the season I would have taken three or four wins and staying away from relegation,” he said. “That would be a success.
“A win against Rupertswood would go a long way to stitching up our spot. It would put us a game and half clear of Rupertswood. “If we lose they are ahead of us.” The match is evenly poised after day one, which was a tough slog for both sides. The Tigers made 9-133 with Brandon Nicholls top-scoring with 31. Barker, who wasn’t at the game, said the players said it was tough going. “Our ground is very slow, so that total is worth about 170-180,” he said. “At the start of the day we were hoping for another 40 runs. They had to grind the runs out. Rupertswood bowled really well and gave us nothing loose.”
With the runs on the board, the Tigers will back themselves in to get the job done. Rupo’s weakness this season has been inconsistent batting. Barker said they won’t take anything for granted. “The first hour will be the key if we can get two or three wickets and get on a roll, I think we’ll be right. “Generally with Lancefield if we can get two or three wickets early it will set the tone, if not we tend to struggle.” In other matches, Bacchus Marsh has already claimed first innings points against an undermanned Woodend. The Bulls bowled Woodend out for just 62. Nicholas Smith was
the only batsman to make double figures, finishing with 35. In just his second match for Gisborne, Danza Hyatt smashed 176 to guide his side to 9-331 against Diggers Rest Bulla. Riddell is 1-2 in reply to Romsey’s 8-195 and Sunbury is 1-41 chasing Sunbury United’s 193. Meanwhile, the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges veterans’ cricket travelled to Gippsland to play Iona on Sunday and came away with the points. Sunbury made 158, with Dave Cordy top-scoring with 38 not out. Sunbury’s last gasp win By Tara Murray Sunbury has come away with the win in a close encounter with Melton in their Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1 clash. Looking to keep the pressure on the top two teams, third-placed Sunbury had a fight on its hands until the final ends. Shane Trewarne, deputising for his son, Todd, who missed the match, led his rink to a 22-8 win, while Marc Bullows’ rink lost 23-16. Sunbury’s David Glennon said the other two rinks could have gone either way. Carla Krizanic won on the final end against fellow Victorian representative Samantha Shanahan. Mark Cowan was up all day before losing two shots on the final end to lose by a shot. Sunbury got the win 75 (14)-67 (4). Glennon said Trewarne and Wayne Long, who was in the same rink as Trewarne, were the two standouts. Sunbury remains third, 28 points behind Moonee Valley and 10 points behind second-placed Glenroy. Sunbury has opened a 37-point gap on fourth-placed Essendon (2). Glennon said his team was in a good position heading into the last part of the season. “We’re due to face Moonee Valley this week,” he said. “If we can carry on and beat them it would be nice, and would close the gap on them to under a match. “It’s expected to be 39 degrees on Saturday, so I’m not sure if we’ll play if it stays that way. “We’ve got plenty of games still to play and a lot of winnable games in that.” Sunbury’s second side got up 18-0 to further move away from the relegation zone. Three of Sunbury’s six teams won on Saturday. The club men’s singles championships has been postponed to this week. In Central Highlands Division top grade, Gisborne and Kyneton had a cracker of a match that ended with the teams on 99 shots apiece. In a scoreline that read 99 (11)-99 (7), Gisborne won three rinks to one to get the win, extending the gap between the two teams, which are third and fourth. Ladder-leader Kyneton Golf easily accounted for Romsey, winning 99 (16)-71 (2), while Bacchus Marsh Gold kept the pressure on Golf by defeating Lancefield 90 (15)- 81 (3). Trentham smashed Bacchus Marsh Blue in the other match. In division 2, Diggers Rest was too good for Kyneton, Gisborne Red beat Macedon, Kyneton Gold smashed Lancefield and Woodend easily accounted for Gisborne Yellow.

Cats in control over Magpies Macedon is looking to pull off an upset win against ladder-leader Wallan in Gisborne and District Cricket Association B grade. The Cats, who sit outside the top four, are in control of the match against the Magpies after day one. The Cats bowled the Magpies out for 153, with Ollie Clough taking 6-56 off 16.4 overs. Clough then steadied the Cats with the bat, making an unbeaten 37 as his side progressed to 3-83 at stumps. Ashfield produced its best batting performance of the season to be on top after day one against Riddell. Needing to keep pressure on the top four sides, fifth-placed Ashfield produced an even batting performance. A slow start involved the loss of three early wickets, before the side steadied. Jas King, Mark Muir, Ethan Travers and Russell Phillips all made 40-plus runs to push the score to 8-325. Travers top-scored with 88 while Muir made 67 not out. Heath Brown took four wickets for the Bombers. Ashfield’s 325 wasn’t the biggest score of the round. That was notched up by St Anthonys, which hit 4-427 against Gisborne. Paul Scott and Cam Clayton both made centuries for the Saints. East Sunbury is well on its way to victory against Kyneton. The Thunder is 1-42 in reply to Kyneton’s 142. Jack Dillion starred with the ball for the Thunder, taking 5-28. The two teams tied back in round one when they last met. In the other match, Eynesbury is 0-14 in reply to Bacchus Marsh’s 213. For ages, tradies have been out of tune with modern living, being stuck with tinny entertainment systems in their utes, while navigation invariably gave up the ghost where the bitumen ended. Thanks to the increasing popularity of pickup trucks by non-tradies, owners of new Mazda BT-50s can switch on to the latest in in-car entertainment with the pickup truck climbing to new heights through the addition of a premium satellite navigation-cuminfotainment system. Mazda Australia has got together with the Australian arm of Alpine Electronics to develop the new system, which is standard equipment on XTR and GT grades. My first experience with the new infotainment set-up was in a BT-50 GT Dual Cab automatic 4x4, which comes to market for $52,490, plus on-road costs. Styling dates back to 2012 in keeping with Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom philosophy, when both front and back of the BT-50 came under the stylists’ pen with a straighter radiator grille, redesign of the front and rear lights and new 17-inch alloy wheels on the XTR and GT. XTR models also came with tubular side steps, auto dimming mirrors, rain sensing wipers and auto on/off headlamps, while GT added power mirrors, with heating and folding function, plus turn indicator and privacy glass. The cabin has a passenger car-like look and feel. GT seats are trimmed in black leather, while the driver’s seat has eight-way power adjustment. This is the biggest feature of the Mazda BT-50 we’ve just tested. A larger 8-inch high-resolution colour touchscreen includes a fully integrated reversing camera and an improved satellite navigation system that
