Take the heat off wildlife Scootch the koala joey is being raised by the caring team behind Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network. Local wildlife rescuers found the young koala clinging to his mother’s back after she was hit and killed by a car. Scootch is now being reared by a koala carer until he is fit to be released back into the wild. The rescuers and foster carers at Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network volunteer their time to respond to local wildlife emergencies. The team is asking Macedon Ranges residents to help wildlife beat the heat this summer through a few simple actions. Network rescuer and foster carer Mel Frazer has urged locals to be aware that wildlife will be searching for water and shade on hot days. “Ringtail possums, koalas and birds are all highly susceptible to heat,” Ms Frazer said. “You can help our native wildlife cope in extreme heat by placing bowls/tubs of water around your garden to help keep animals hydrated.” She said garden hoses could be used to spray mist into trees and shrubs to create cooler niches where the animals can escape the heat. “A simple act of kindness such as bird baths can help save these magnificent animals from heat stress.” Wildlife Victoria’s emergency hotline: 1300 094 535. Road blitz results shock By Serena Seyfort More than seven drivers each day, on average, were caught breaking the law on Macedon Ranges roads during the Christmas and holiday period. Highway patrol officers stringently patrolled the region’s roads from December 15, 2017 to Sunday, January 7, 2018 as part of Victoria Police’s Operation Roadwise. The number of offending drivers uncovered was “far too high”, according to Macedon
Ranges Highway Patrol unit commander Sergeant Brad Hall. “We want to see the number at zero – any number of people speeding is too many,” Sergeant Hall said. Police intercepted 121 speeding drivers in total, along with seven unlicensed drivers and seven drivers disobeying traffic signals. Four drivers were apprehended for drink-driving and three for driving under the influence of drugs. Sergeant Hall said while there were more people driving during the
holidays, the highway patrol’s message applied to every day of the year. “If people are going to be substance affected on the roads, they’re going to be caught,” he said. Sergeant Hall said Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol checked at least 1000 vehicles during the 24-day operation. Five drivers were caught using a disqualified or suspended licence, 22 vehicles were found to be unregistered and four people were caught illegally using mobile phones while driving.
Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said the operation’s results throughout Victoria were very concerning. “We have seen people engaging in behaviours that are unacceptable and completely inconsistent with keeping safe on the roads,” Assistant Commissioner Fryer said. “Police are out doing our part to enforce the law but I must implore the community to do the right thing in the first place.” A total of 31,293 offences were detected across Victoria during Operation Roadwise.

Support for school site: report By Serena Seyfort There’s a strong preference for Macedon Ranges council to purchase the former Kyneton Primary School site, according to a report by project consultants. The report, released ahead of a much anticipated draft master plan for the future use of the Baynton Street site, was put together following extensive public consultation. The consultants’ findings show the community is in agreement that the former school site should become the heart of Kyneton
and enhance the public realm around its grounds, including the library and mechanics institute. But the community is divided on the role of commercial use for the site. While most respondents agree the site should be centred around community use, some believe commercial/not-for-profit use of the site will be necessary for economic-viability. While the report reveals a strong preference for Macedon Ranges council to purchase the 1.3 hectare site, it also states that the council does not have the funds allocated to buy it.

The Kyneton Primary school moved from Baynton Street last year and is being rebuilt near Kyneton Secondary College to form an education precinct. The Baynton Street site is owned by the Department of Education. “Conversation has set up expectation within
the community without any committed funding from either state and local government to purchase the land,” the report states. “This report could be used as an advocacy tool for state, regional and local government funding.” Community consultation on the school site’s future use included an online survey, workshops, drop-in stalls at public events and meetings with stakeholders. The session was one of the activities on offer as part of Macedon Ranges council’s youth holiday program. A second music evening will be held on Tuesday, January 23, from 4-6.30pm at Kyneton Youth Portable on Hutton Street (behind the Town Hall), lead by local band Mosey. Ambulance paramedics were called to 13 incidents concerning people being left unattended in vehicles in Sunbury in a 12 month period. New data from Ambulance Victoria shows there were also two emergency calls for people stuck inside vehicles in Romsey, one in Woodend, one in Kyneton and one in Diggers Rest between September 1, 2016, and August 31 last year. Across the state, Ambulance Victoria responded to 1696 call-outs – 95 per cent of cases involvied toddlers and babies left in cars. The state government has released the figures to coincide with the launch of a campaign aimed at making motorists aware that it is unsafe to leave children unattended in cars, especially in summer. Minister for families and children Jenny Mikakos has warned parents that leaving children unattended inside a vehicle is against the law. “There’s no excuse and no exception,” Ms Mikakos said. “Our children should never be left in cars. “Even on a milder day in the mid-20s the temperature inside a parked vehicle can easily get to 20 to 30 degrees hotter than outside.” Studies have shown that body temperatures of children rise three to five times faster than an adults – putting them at greater risk of life-threatening heat stroke, dehydration and organ damage. Leaving a child unattended in a vehicles could result in fines of up to $3900 and a six month jail sentence.

Macedon’s art attack Gisborne artist Chieko Hester will be teaching locals how to make origami in Mount Macedon this Sunday. Her origami workshop will be one of a range of classes and demonstrations running on Saturday, January 20 and Sunday, January 21 for The Gallery Mt Macedon’s open weekend. Art enthusiasts of all ages can have a go at making mosaic jewellery, plant wreaths, origami, metal clay jewellery and at painting silk scarves and hanging spheres. The gallery’s talented tutors and artists will host

Dump under the pump
Macedon Ranges council has moved to reopen the free caravan dump-point at Kyneton Mineral Springs Reserve, after it was closed in July due to the costs associated with unprecedented demand. The number of caravans – or RVs – using the site had led to a need for more regular extraction than originally planned. At its December meeting, the council agreed to allocate another $8000 while undertaking a study on demand from RV tourism to investigate the need for a new facility. Rivers and creeks in Melbourne’s west deserve the sort of planning and environmental protections given to the Yarra, according to a campaign launched by environmental, legal and local river groups. The Rivers of the West campaign, which is being co-ordinated by legal group Environmental Justice Australia, wants similar tough planning rules to those brought in last year to protect the Yarra from inappropriate development. “We want to shift these rivers from industrial drains to well-functioning waterways,” said lawyer Bruce Lindsay, of Environmental Justice Australia. The campaign will urge the state’s political parties to back increased protections for the Maribyrnong and Werribee river catchments, and their tributaries including Jacksons Creek, Deep Creek and Steele Creek. The campaign will: • Ask that wetlands be restored along rivers to improve water quality; • Demand tougher planning measures to prevent urban growth directly affecting the Maribyrnong and Werribee rivers and their catchments, in areas such as Werribee, Sunbury and Romsey; and • Propose better ways of managing contaminated stormwater run-off. Premier wrestling
Players of all skill levels are encouraged to join the Macedon Ranges Badminton Club this new year. SPORT Tigers look to one of their own to lead them further Sunbury Tigers have turned to one of their stars to take on the coaching reins for this year’s Victorian Rugby League first division season. The Tigers, who finished fourth after being knocked out in the first week of finals, announced earlier this year that Terry Constantinou would coach the side. Constantinou, who has played for the Tigers since 2007, has played in six grand finals, including four premierships with the club. Constantinou said there was excitement, but also nerves, about taking on the role. “I’ve coached junior representative sides, but coaching men is a bit different,” he said.
“The club approached me and my concern was about juggling all my time. I gave it some time and talked it through with my inner circle and they were behind me taking on the role. “Since it’s been announced I’ve got a few texts from players and coaches wanting to help out.” He replaces Sione Ah Kuoi as coach. Constantinou said he had started trying to recruit some players to the club and believes if they can retain last year’s squad they are in a really good starting position. “The players are extremely talented,” he said. “We need to put in the structures which
complement their playing style. “I want to up the players’ knowledge bases with what I’ve learnt from being a rep coach. I think they’ll benefit from it. “I’ve sent out a few texts to guys who may have hung up the boots. Guys who played at higher level but could still hold their own at this level. There’s some other people who want to come over as well.” At just 28, Constantinou will be a playing coach and said it was important to have a strong team around him. Last year, Constantinou was a finalist in the NRL Victoria senior representative player of
Dragons’ plans drenched By Tara Murray Gisborne’s hopes of cementing a top-four spot were ruined by rain in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. The battle between the fourth-placed Dragons and third-placed Woodend was evenly poised when rain stopped play. While the sides returned to the field for a few overs after tea, rain fell again to end the match. Dragons coach Glenn Waites said it was extremely frustrating. “We’re shattered,” he said. “Last week we were heated off and now this week we’ve been washed out. Everyone has come back from the break and been training well. We just want to play. “The match would have given us the opportunity to be alongside Woodend and, depending on other results, put a gap on the rest of the sides.” Woodend was 4-121 when rain halted play and tea was called early. Another wicket fell in the five overs played after tea. Waites said the game was in the balance when it was called off. “If we had kept Woodend to under 160 we would have been really looking forward to the run chase,” he said. “We talked to the umpires about extending the game … But then more rain fell. “Because we lost half an hour the game reverted to Woodend either needing to be bowled out or they would have had to declare to make a game of it.” Darcy Nolan took two for the Dragons. One highlight for the Dragons was the debut of West Indian international Danza Hyatt. Waites said they thought Hyatt might not play this season. “He lost his dad and we thought initially that we wouldn’t have him this year. “We then got the call from him saying that he was right to still come. He has fitted in so well and is an absolute professional. “We haven’t seen anything like his preparation before. It’s another level.” The Dragons remain fourth on the ladder. They face the two bottom sides, Diggers Rest Bulla and Rupertswood (twice) in the next three matches, before finishing the season off against finals contenders Sunbury and Woodend. Waites said wins were vital to ensure they finish in the top four and have a chance to win a third straight premiership. “We have to take care of business every week,” he said. Just one McIntyre Cup game produced a result with the rain playing havoc across the region at the weekend. Riddell defeated Rupertswood to move to the top of the ladder. Rupertswood made just 90, and Michael Treweek top-scored with 20. James Hughes took four wickets for the Bombers. The Bombers, without skipper Mick Allen, made 5-93 in reply. All other games were declared draws.

Rain dashes Sunbury hopes Rain proved to be Sunbury’s greatest opponent on Saturday in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1. Facing bottom side Altona (2), Sunbury looked set for a big win when it was up in three of the four rinks when rain set in. Once rain hit, it was the end of play – Sunbury had to settle for a draw and nine points. Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was disappointing not to come away with the win. He said they had been hoping for a big victory to try to close the gap on the top sides. “We were well in front when it was called,” he said. “We were heading for 16 points at least, if not the whole 18 points. It would have been a nice start to the second half of the season.”

Both women were last week named in the Victorian side to take on South Australia in a test series. Brad Janner will face Wayne Long in the club’s men’s final. Gisborne’s juniors lead the way in state championships The success of the Gisborne cricket program continues to shine through. The Dragons have long had players selected in the Central Highlands representative teams and this season is no different – 13 past or present Dragons have been named in state championship teams. Georgia Kerr, Imogen Barlow, Kameka Barnes, Tanae Bannan and Georgia Paton were all part of the under-18 girls team which competed last year, while Roby Lane, Riley Vernon, Joel Garbutt and Sam McCaskill are part of the under-18 boys team which played last week. Sam Mackay and Josh McDonald are in the under-16 boys team, while Spencer Jones is in the under-14 boys and Bridget Barlow in the under-16 girls.
Dragons’ president Andrew Headberry said the club was extremely proud of the players selected for the Central Highlands sides. “This hasn’t been a one-off thing, it’s been going on for a number of years,” he said of the selections. “I think it’s become a culture at the club. “The kids see that some of the people they were playing with two to three years beforehand are stepping up. The kids see what those before them have done and want to do that themselves.” Headberry said it was also reward for the parents who do a lot of the hard work driving the players around. Thunder storms home By Tara Murray East Sunbury’s claim on the fourth and last finals’ spot continues to grow in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade competition. The three top sides have played a class above for most of the season, meaning the fight has been for fourth spot. And East Sunbury, which is in fourth just four points clear of an improving Ashfield, is determined to stay there. It did its ambitions no harm with a comprehensive win against Riddell at the weekend. Thunder president Mark Wilkins said the win almost didn’t happen because of the rain. Under association rules, if 30 minutes of play had been lost the game would have finished at 6pm and the time could not have be made up. A delay of less than 30 minutes means the teams can continue to play until the overs are bowled. “There was a delay of 29 minutes so the boys were lucky to get the win in the end,” Wilkins said. “If they had played to 6pm it would have finished in a draw.” The Thunder batted first, making 7-197. Shannon McDorman top-scored with 45, and Lachlan Brne made 38. The top six all made starts. The Thunder then bowled the Bombers out for 106. Jack Dillon took 4-8 to be the pick of the bowlers. Wilkins said while finals were definitely on the agenda, the club hadn’t deferred from the long-term plan of pushing youth through the sides. Evan Wilkins made his first XI debut on Saturday, while youngster Liam Watson played his fourth first XI game and first for the season. “We’ve got a really young side with a lot of 17 to 20 year-olds,” Wilkins said. “We don’t expect to knock houses down this season, but we want to be competitive and pushing for McIntyre Cup in the next few years.” The Thunder’s next three matches are against sides outside the top four, before facing the top two sides in last two rounds. Wilkins said winning the next few games would put them in a good position. Several players who were missing from the top two sides at the weekend will add more depth when they return to the side, including captain-coach Jessy Carroll, wicketkeeper Keith Osborne, Jake Calleja and Brayden Jinks. “We’ve got a good draw on paper and some quite winnable games coming up,” Wilkins said. “We should win more than we lose if you’re going by the ladder, but position doesn’t mean a thing. “Everything going to plan, we’ll make finals. We’re not going in thinking we’ll win it, but who knows, we snuck in and lost the grand

The under-16 girls were knocked out in the semi-finals and the under-14 girls were eliminated in the preliminary final. Mini has always been about customisation. Well, almost always. When launched way back in 1959 it was intended to be cheap, practical transportation for four people. But its cute shape soon entranced people and Minis became very much part of the Swinging Sixties, being personalised by pop stars, movie stars, royalty and anyone else wanting to get away from mainstream. When the New Mini was launched in 2002 BMW, by now the owner of the brand, could see opportunities of making serious amounts of extra cash by coming up with a huge range of extras – and offering complete special editions. Which brings us to the Mini Clubman Masterpiece Edition. Only 30 of these Masterpieces are being sold in Australia, each with an individual build plaque, a neat touch is an engine-bay designation plaque. Priced at $55,210 and based on the Mini Cooper S Clubman, Masterpiece is finished in White Silver. There is a panoramic glass sunroof and ‘Masterpiece Edition’ badges to the C-pillars. It rides on 18-inch alloy wheels in a Masterpiece-specific design, that are finished in dark spectre grey. Contrasting exterior sections in black include roof rails, door mirror caps and bonnet stripes, while the side scuttles are finished in ‘Black Jack’. Inside are Supple Mini Yours ‘Leather Lounge’ seats trimmed in carbon black, the front seats are powered and heated. The piano black illuminated Mini Yours interior styling package contrasts with chrome line interior trims, with the Mini Yours sports leather steering wheel, Anthracite headliner and ‘Essentials’ diamond-pattern deep floor mats.
