The Macedon Ranges will be protected from inappropriate development by new legislation introduced into Parliament last week. The new planning controls will stop development encroaching on “treasured natural landscapes”. Macedon Ranges will be the first area designated as a “distinctive area” under the legislation. The legislation will provide a model for other areas of significance and “outstanding natural beauty”, such as the Yarra Ranges and Great Ocean Road. The state government has drafted the Macedon Ranges Localised Planning Statement with Macedon Ranges council. Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said the controls were well overdue. The Woodend resident of 30 years said new controls would stop the area “falling into being a part of Melbourne, rather than a part of rural Victoria – a special part”. “In Gisborne, people are just saying there’s too many people,” Ms Pruneau said. “Places like Gisborne are just little villages – there’s limits to what you can do. We have to work out what our carrying capacity is.” Ms Pruneau said Macedon Ranges’ environment, character and landscape needed to come before development. “The minute you’ve moved your boundaries out into rural land to accommodate growth, you’ve failed to take care of the place.” She said the residents association would “make it known” if they didn’t think the planning statement was “up to scratch”. The Macedon Ranges Localised Planning Statement will introduce new settlement boundaries for Gisborne, Kyneton, Romsey, Riddells Creek, Lancefield and Woodend township. The boundaries will be subject to the same rigorous protections as Melbourne’s permanent Urban Growth Boundary, requiring Parliamentary approval for amendments. Planning Minister Richard Wynne described the Macedon Ranges as an important location for all Victorians. “This landmark legislation will lock down the treasured natural landscapes that should never be encroached on – and encourage development in appropriate areas to ensure townships grow sustainably,” he said. Cyclists push for safety By Serena Seyfort Cycling groups are calling for safety upgrades to Macedon’s Black Forest Drive where a cyclist was fatally injured earlier this month. But they say improving safety also needs to involve drivers. A man died in hospital after being hit by a car while riding along Black Forest Drive on Sunday, December 10. Three cyclists were also struck from behind on the same stretch of road in June, leaving one
man with life-threatening injuries. Australia’s largest bike riding organisation Bicycle Network has called the recent tragedy “foreseeable”, saying it was inevitable people would be killed or seriously injured as a result of bike lanes being removed from the road in 2010. According to the network, the TAC and VicRoads reduced the former four-lane highway to a two-lane road with a wide bike facility in 2010 to improve Black Forest Drive’s “frightening safety record”.
But the bike lanes were removed months later after “a highly political campaign” by locals. Bike Safe Macedon Ranges secretary Blair Calvert said bike lanes “absolutely” needed to be returned to the road, but drivers also needed to pay better attention. “We can campaign, but if people aren’t paying attention when they’re driving it won’t do anything,” Mr Calvert said. “We’ll try not to use that road, but there should be no reason for an incident – there’s plenty of room.”
Police urge restraint Macedon Ranges highway patrol is urging drivers to take care on the roads during the upcoming festive season. Slow down, don’t be distracted by phones, take breaks on long trips and plan transport home before drinking, are Acting Sergeant Peter Wall’s main messages for motorists. The Kyneton-based officer said the number of road incidents normally rose in December, so police presence would be increased. “We will be out and about in force, targeting all issues,” Acting Sergeant Wall said. “Police will be really vigilant on the Calder. Anyone found offending – even speeding minorly – will be caught. “Have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year,” Acting Sergeant Wall said. “If we don’t see you on the roads, that will be a good thing.” Serena Seyfort

The number of family violence incidents in Sunbury has soared in the past year, according to new Crime Statistics Agency data. Reported cases of family violence common assaults rose 62.5 per cent in the 12 months to September 30, 2017, up to 104 incidents from 64 in the previous year. Family violence serious assault cases climbed to 62, up from 55 in September 2016. Hume inspector Anthony Brown said while police were always working to reduce family violence, an increase in the number of reports was a sign that more incidents were not going under the radar. “We’re out there actively encouraging people to report cases of family violence,” Inspector Brown said. “We have a dedicated family violence investigation team and we take all incidences of violence very seriously.” Incidents of common assault not related to family violence also rose 62.9 per cent, up to 57 cases from 35. Inspector Brown said most of these incidents were between people who knew each other and were not random attacks. Overall, 3167 offences were recorded in Sunbury in the year to September 30, 2017, up from 3098 last year. In Macedon Ranges, overall offences remained steady at 2571 – just two more than the previous year. But cases of common assault not related to family violence jumped to 252, up from 146.

The husband of an Avondale Heights woman found dumped in Mount Macedon has been charged with her murder. Borce Ristevski appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates Court last Wednesday. The 53-year-old told the court he would be pleading not guilty. He was remanded to appear again on April 18. Karen Ristevski’s remains were discovered in bushland off Loch Road in Mount Macedon on February 20, almost eight months after she went missing.

Macedon Ranges council has applied for $3.9 million in federal funding to build the first stage of New Gisborne Regional Sports Fields. At a special meeting last week, the council decided it would nominate the $7.8 million project for the federal Building Better Regions fund. It will also seek funding for a $1.76 million upgrade of Kyneton Saleyards and Truck Wash Facility. New sports fields in Gisborne have been on the table since the council’s 2006 Leisure Strategy Plan recommended investigating new ovals as a high priority. The other is Christmas, says Barbara. “Our guests are buoyed by holiday cheer and good wishes,” she says. “Decorations are everywhere! And we now have a wonderful revamped alfresco area, with extra seating and large shade sails. This is a lovely spot to get together with friends during the holiday season – or any other time. Everyone’s feeling chilled and in the mood for trying one of our good wines or, as we like to call them, sunshine in a bottle. “If they like, they can tuck into a pizza from either Mama or Papa Bear – our wood-fired pizza ovens. Or visit the cellar door to check out our lovingly made reds and whites.” Barbara and Bob see their staff as family. They all get together at year’s end to celebrate all the hard work and good times. These good spirits spill over to their guests – another ingredient that contributes to the specialness of the place. “That’s why we put out a big invitation to locals and holiday visitors to share what we have here. We’ll do all we can to make it special. Did I mention our views?” Opened 16 years ago, the winery offers wine tasting and education, as well as a great tourist experience – a stay in one of four self-contained eco-cottages in the grounds. Barbara and Bob are always chuffed to give locals a job and contribute to causes. They also value their relationships with the community. “We are proud of our contribution to the community as the locals have always supported us and continually bring their friends and relatives to show off their local winery,” Barbara says. “It’s a two-way street”. SPORT Carla’s going for gold at the games Making the Commonwealth Games team is just as exciting the second time round for Sunbury Bowling Club’s Carla Krizanic. Krizanic, who was part of the Jackaroos squad at Glasgow in 2014, was earlier this month named in Jackaroos’ 17 player squad for April’s games on the Gold Coast. “I’m very thrilled,” she said last week. “It was a long process to get selected and I’m excited that it’s official. “Glasgow was really exciting and I’m thrilled and really honoured to get another opportunity to play at a Commonwealth Games.” Krizanic said the chance to play in her home country in front of her friends and family was extra special. She rates the games up there with the world championships as the pinnacle of the sport. A decision on which events Krizanic competes in will be made closer to the event, with Australia selecting a strong women’s team.
The women selected also made up Australia’s World Championship team 12 months ago, where they won three out of the four events. Krizanic was part of the winning triples and fours teams. She says she still gets goose bumps thinking about those wins. The 27-year-old said she enjoys being part of the team events. “Some of my best mates play in the teams events and if at the Commonwealth Games I’m lucky to win a medal, I’ll win it with some of my best mates. “I’ll get to celebrate with them.” Selection in the team caps off a big 12 months for Krizanic, who was named Australia’s number one female bowler for 2016-17, which counts performances in singles and team events. “It was massive getting good results as I tried to make the Australian teams,” she said. “I crept my way up to number one and it’s a
great feeling. I’m lucky to have some good teammates.” Preparation for the Commonwealth Games starts this week with a camp at Broadbeach, where the games will be held. Krizanic said she would try and compete in as many events as possible between now and the games to continue working on her form. Helping Sunbury qualify for the Bowls Victoria division 1, section 1 finals was also on the agenda. “We’re half way through the season and we’re in a finals position,” she said. “I missed a few weeks with Aussie commitments, but hopefully I’ll play a lot more in the second half of the season to help us make finals.” Tara Murray Carla Krizanic is excited for a second Commonwealth Games appearance. Young guns shake it up By Tara Murray It will be a different looking Central Highlands team at the Cricket Victoria under-18 male state championships in January. A number of bottom-age players impressed during the trials and practice matches to force their way into the squad. The squad of 13 will include eight bottom-age players and just four players from the previous season’s team. Highlanders coach Karl Mayne said it was satisfying seeing so many players push for the final squad. “There’s a number of bottom-agers in the squad and it’s a different feeling,” he said. “We’ve got a couple of fast bowlers and some slower bowlers and there is a bit of batting depth. “We had no preconceived ideas on the squad and we think it’s a real balanced squad. “It puts us in a strong position for next season as well.” Three former Gisborne players are among those to watch for the Highlanders. Mayne, who is in his second year in charge of the side, said it’s a credit to the club that it keeps producing players that go on to play representative cricket. “Roby Lane, who is at the national championships at the moment, is certainly capable,” he said. “He’s playing for Northcote’s premier cricket’s second XI side. “Sam McCaskill and Riley Vernon are also both at Premier Cricket clubs and have both featured in Victoria squads before. “Both will bat at the top of the order.” Joel Garbut, who is also from Gisborne, is part of the squad. Mayne said they were also excited to see what Darley’s Joel Cadman will do at the championships. He said the middle order batsman impressed the selection panel during the trials. Other players in the team are Riddell’s Ben Radford, Brown Hill’s Fraser Hunt and Fraser Hay, Ballarat-Redan’s Jack Riding, Barkers Creek’s Darby Semmens, Sunbury United’s Timothy Attard, and Golden Point’s Sam and Matt Harris. Mayne said the key to the championships was to win early games and then see what happened. Earlier this year, the Highlanders won one match, after injuries riddled the week. While the cricket is the main focus, the tournament also gives the side the chance to go away together as team. Mayne said it’s one thing that the country teams really have over the city teams in that aspect.

Fit Hawks ready to fire Woodend-Hesket is putting together a program it hopes will help the side climb up the Riddell District Football League ladder. After a couple of injury-riddled years, the Hawks, under new coach Tom Carland, have put a real emphasise on fitness early in the pre-season. New football manager Dennis Barker said things had been going well. “We’re averaging 30 players a night which is good at this time of the year,” he said. “Andy Wilson is our fitness man and he’s set up a structure and program which the boys are really loving. “We hope his fitness knowledge will help us get over the injury hurdles. We’ve had a bad run with injuries.” Barker said they would start turning their attention more to the new game plan in the new year. The Hawks have also added some extra depth to the team. Alister Rae comes across from Essendon District Football League premier club Strathmore and will provide a target up forward. Tom Wilson, who comes from Tungamah, will add to the midfield with Carland, who is a playing coach. Trent Laverie will add to the backline in his return to the club, having spent this year at Avondale Heights. The club is hopeful that Dean Bramley, another player from Strathmore, will also add to the midfield. The Hawks announced his signing on Facebook, but he still needs to get a clearance from Strathmore. Barker said they were still talking to more players . Cam Arnold leaves the Hawks after just one season, while under-18.5 league best and fairest winner Shane Lindsay has joined East Sunbury. Barker said the club aimed to improve on this season’s results – it finished ninth on the ladder with four wins. “The depth is improving and we’ve recruited well,” he said. “We’ve got five or six players coming and the positives of the last couple of years has been being able to play the young blokes.” Tara Murray

Big hitting Macedon takes the T20 crown Macedon claimed its first ever Gisborne and District Cricket Association T20 title, taking out the district division grand final on Tuesday night. Taking on last year’s winner and region division winner Wallan, Macedon had a tough task ahead. And for most of the game, it looked like the Magpies would make it back-to-back titles. Ollie Clough, who was joint skipper with Pat Trotta during the T20 competition, admitted they had their backs against the wall. “We’ve played Wallan a few times in the last few seasons and we knew they were a quality outfit at their home ground,” he said. “There was a big hostile crowd there as well. “They needed less than 40 off the last five overs which was doable on the big ground. We managed to get a few wickets and slow them down a bit.” The Magpies needed 10 runs off the last over, which was to be bowled by Nathan Aikman. The Magpies still had seven wickets in hand. “Nathan got smashed around in his first
three overs,” Clough said. “We brought him back on and he got two wickets in the last over. It’s one of the better overs I’ve seen someone bowl at the death.” The Magpies finished 5-157, still six runs short of victory. Aikman took two wickets, while Tim Dawe, Brendon Scott and Pat Trotta took a wicket each. While Aikman was the man at the end of the innings, it was Daniel Trotta that set up the win. Macedon was in trouble at 4-51, before Daniel Trotta and Scott put on 86 for the fifth wicket partnership to get Macedon back on track. Macedon eventually finishing 9-162. Trotta pushed on making 86 before being run out. The innings included eight fours and five sixes. Clough said the innings was one of the cleanest hitting performances he had seen and it included the biggest six they had seen. The win means that Macedon will qualify for the division two finals of the Central Highlands
region’s Cricket Willow T20 competition. For Macedon it’s something new and an experience the players are looking forward to. “It’s a pretty good feeling,” Clough said. “We haven’t had a lot of success in the top team for a number of years, battling away in the longer format. To win four [T20] games in a row, we’re ecstatic. “It’s a pretty good opportunity [Central Willow] for the boys to come together in a different format from the standard Saturday cricket.” Clough said they were hoping the T20 premiership would set up the rest of their season. By Tara Murray Riddell’s dominance of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association T20 premier division continues, with the Bombers winning a third straight title. The Bombers showed their best short form cricket so far in the comprehensive win against Romsey on Tuesday night. Electing to bat, the Bombers made 5-170 off its overs. Playing captain-coach Mick Allen top scored with 56, while Daniel Fisk and James Taylor both made runs late in the order. Allen returned to the top of the order after not batting in the last T20 game. He said the side’s batting line-up depended on the game situation. “It’s one of those things, if we bat first then I’ll open the batting,” he said. “If we bowl first we’ll see what we need to get and then change it up a bit. If you look at the McIntyre Cup matches, we’ve had four guys in five matches make centuries and it’s been a while since that happened.” Allen said he thought 170 was around the mark. He said the key to getting the win was restricting Ben Way and Chris Burkett. They did that and ultimately Romsey struggled. Romsey was in trouble at 6-37 and was eventually out for just 64. Allen, Cameron Moran, Harry Fisher and Heath Brown took two wickets each for the Bombers. Brown also produced a good bit of fielding to run Way out. Allen said one of the pleasing things about the T20 tournament was giving opportunities to younger players across the four games. “Harry Fisher came back from school cricket and contributed in the final,” he said. “Alex Ryan played, as did Ben Radford who was away for the final.” With three straight T20 titles, Allen said the key to their success was having a number of options with the bat and ball. “We’ve got heaps of players that are all rounders,” he said. “The likes of Matt Darby and Cam Moran, everyone can bat and bowl. We’re just trying to transition that into the two-day stuff.” The win means the Bombers qualify for the Central Highlands region’s Cricket Willow T20 finals in January. The Bombers finished runners-up earlier this year, having won the event the year before. The opening round of the next Riddell District Football Netball League will be held over two weekends. The season will start on April 7 with Riddell hosting reigning premier Macedon in the afternoon timeslot, before the Sunbury derby between Sunbury Kangaroos and Rupertswood that night at Boardman Reserve. Lancefield and Woodend-Hesket will conclude the first weekend on the Sunday afternoon. On the second weekend of the opening round, Melton Centrals and Rockbank will do battle for the only time in the season, Broadford plays Wallan and Romsey and Diggers Rest play under lights – all on the Saturday. Night matches are on the agenda early in the season, with five night matches across the first five rounds, including Woodend-Hesket hosting Melton Centrals in round two in the first night game at Gilbert Gordon Oval. Melton Centrals will host a night match in round three. Macedon and Rupertswood will continue their tradition of playing on Anzac Day, with this year’s match to double as a grand final rematch. It will be the only time the two teams meet for the season. The Sharks play four of the five other finalists to start the season. The A-grade netball grand final rematch – between Lancefield and Romsey – will be played on May 12. Teams will have the weekend off on May 19 for the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships, when the league will face the Central Highlands Football League, while there will be no games on the Queens Birthday weekend. There will be a split round in round 13. The grand finals will be held on Sunday, September 16. Outgoing league operations manager Steve Williams said a key element in the planning of next year’s fixture was trying to get the right balance with teams playing each other twice. “In the 2016 post-season senior survey, the majority of clubs voted to have the fixture balanced out over multiple years,” he said. “In other words, clubs who played twice in 2017 would play once in 2018 and vice-versa, with the view to continuing this process into 2019 and beyond.” Tara Murray

While the Holden Trax small sports utility vehicle showed a 25 per cent increase in sales in Australia in 2016, Holden is not standing on its laurels and has added to the range with a mid-spec LT. Slotting in between the LS entry-level and range-topping LTZ, it is intended to put Holden at the leading edge of in-car connectivity in the small SUV segment. Holden says it is estimated that about 77 per cent of Australians own at least one smartphone and check them more than 150 times a day, so the company became the first in Australia to offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone systems as standard across the range. Along with this has come new stylish design both inside and out, while Trax LS, with automatic transmission benefits from the same 1.4-litre turbocharged engine as the LT and LTZ providing improved performance and fuel economy. The front-wheel drive Trax ranges in price from $23,990, plus on-road costs, to $30,490 and comes with Holden’s five-year 100,000-kilometre warranty and lifetime capped price servicing. The Trax LT on test, taking its cue from Chevrolet global design, turned out to be one of the sharper models in the segment, with major styling enhancements including new front and rear fascias. Premium styling continues inside, a fresh new console design including contrasting trim and a sweeping dash. Trax offers class-leading connectivity through Holden’s MyLink infotainment system. A 7.0-inch colour touch screen with mobile phone hook-up via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is available across the range.

Features of the award-winning system are accessed through a simple and intuitive icon-based touch screen or by Siri Eyes Free and smartphone voice recognition. Satellite navigation is available only via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The six-speed automatic transmission with Active Select drives the front wheels. It has been calibrated by Holden engineers for Australian conditions and is in sync with suspension tailored to Australian roads.
Advanced chassis systems such as a descent control, hill start assist and electronic stability control incorporating anti-lock braking, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution and traction control have helped win for Trax five-star ANCAP safety rating in Australasia. All models are fitted with a reversing camera and rear parking sensors. Trax also incorporates features an optimised front end for pedestrian protection. The 1.4-litre engine normally performs
without fuss, but has a harsh note when pushed. Active Select is operated via a single button on the tip of the centre console-mounted gearshift lever. Straight-line stability is good, while gone are the days of tall vehicle body roll and choppy ride of a short wheelbase. The Trax’s ride and handling are high end – the Aussie engineers have seen to that. Rear seats tumble forward, more than doubling the 356 litres of cargo space. The 60/40 split-folding rear seat backs further increase versatility. The Trax has a number of convenient storage spaces scattered around the cabin, including four cup holders in the centre console and two in rear centre armrest. Two storage bins are located under the cargo area floor to stow items out of sight and LTZ has an additional tray under the passenger seat. While the Holden Trax forged a new standard in class-leading connectivity with the outside world, unlike some rivals, it is not available in an all-wheel drive version.
