Blooming beauties Garden-lovers are encouraged to join Friends of the Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden and Hume council to celebrate the garden’s 20th anniversary. The Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden pays tribute to the work of Australia’s most prolific rose breeder, the late Alister Clark. Tended by volunteers and Hume council, the garden is dedicated to growing, displaying and promoting the world-famous roses developed by the former Bulla resident. Mr Clark (1864-1949) released 122 types of roses, many of which have since been lost to cultivation. All 67 of the Alister Clark roses currently available, including climbing, pillar, polyantha and hybrid tea bush roses, can be seen in the beautiful garden. The free anniversary event will be held on Saturday, November 11, from 10am on the corner of Green Street and Bulla Road in Bulla. Visitors will receive a copy of the new Roses of Hume book. Tower plans approved Phone and internet coverage is set to improve in Newham, after Macedon Ranges council approved two new telecommunications facilities. But the council rejected plans for a New Gisborne facility because of concerns about its visual impact. A 40-metre high monopole, designed to provide access to both Optus mobile telephone coverage and the NBN network, has been approved for both 56 Bryces Lane and 1224 Rochford Road, Newham. One objection to the Bryces Lane tower, which will be 2.8 kilometres to the east of
Hanging Rock, was heard by the council at its meeting last week. A representative of a nearby resident said the tower was “extremely close to Hanging Rock” and would be in the viewline of Hanging Rock visitors. However, the council was assured the tower would not penetrate the skyline and would be a colour that would blend in with the environment. An NBN representative said alternative locations that had been explored would require a facility 20 metres higher than what was proposed. He said the company had met with Newham residents in recent years who were calling for better internet coverage.
Councillor Natasha Gayfer, who lives near Hanging Rock, motioned for the “tricky” decision to go ahead in the interests of better connection. She said she had spoken to residents, who did not object to the tower. She said the improved coverage would benefit the many residents in the area who worked from home and would be better for emergencies. A third monopole planned for 372 Barringo Road, New Gisborne was knocked back against the recommendation of council officers. The tower would have been next to Highfield Estate, which includes a residence, function space and accommodation. A representative of five objectors told the
council the tower would significantly impact views from the estate, which is marketed as a tourism destination because of its rural feel. The representative said the presence of a tower would affect the landscape for weddings, bridal party photos and wakes which were held at the property. Councillor Andrew Twaits pushed to refuse the permit, saying the tower would have a “direct unreasonable impact on other properties”. The tower was intended to provide access to the NBN network and Optus mobile telephone coverage for residents in New Gisborne, Macedon and a residential area between New Gisborne and Riddells Creek.

Weird and wonderful pieces of history will be on display at Kyneton Museum from Friday. Macedon Ranges council and Kyneton Historical Society’s joint exhibition, Hobby to Hoarding, will showcase items from the unsual collections of five locals. Participant Larina Strauch said the show was guided by each person’s individual passions. Ms Strauch has been collecting souvenir spoons since she was a teenager and inherited some of her collection from her mother. Cigarette cards that are more than a century old will also be among the items she is contributing. Other Kyneton Historical Society members have offered up ventriloquist dolls, vintage matchboxes, novelty salt and pepper shakers and The Phantom paraphernalia. The exhibition will run until January. House prices have soared in Sunbury over the past three months. The median Sunbury house price was $518,000 in September – $65,500 higher than the previous quarter, according to new Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) data. The 14.5 per cent increase on June’s median house price of $452,500 meant Sunbury experienced the state’s second highest growth for the quarter, behind Dromana where prices jumped 15 per cent. The median house price in Melbourne has increased by just 0.7 per cent since June, to $817,000. Brad Teal Real Estate Sunbury director, Craig Teal said the hike in Sunbury’s prices was due to higher demand than supply and developers seeing the area’s potential. Mr Teal said the addition of the Metro train had greatly increased Sunbury’s popularity by bringing Melbourne CBD into easy reach for commuters. “There’s just so many more buyers out there trying to secure properties than there are houses for sale,” he said. Mr Teal said Sunbury had felt the “tsunami effect” from prices rising to the east of the suburb. He said developers had also risen as “big players” in the Sunbury marketplace, driving up the price on blocks of land of more than 600 square metres. Mr Teal said developers were buying bigger blocks to construct units. “It’s pushing the price up, because if someone wants to live in it, they’ve got to compete with a developer.” But with the median house about $300,000 less than the median Melbourne home, he said Sunbury remains affordable.

Kyneton courthouse is closed ahead of a $1.2 million upgrade, funded in the 2016-17 state budget. The new design will respect the 160-year-old building’s heritage while making internal improvements. The courthouse is getting a revamped public entry, a foyer with waiting spaces and interview rooms and new registry counter. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the middle of next year. Matters will be heard at Castlemaine Magistrates’ Court in the meantime.

Female player change rooms and unisex umpire change rooms are finally on the way for Kyneton Showgrounds and Woodend’s Gilbert Gordon Reserve. The state government last week announced a $100,000 grant to Macedon Ranges council to redevelop the change rooms at Kyneton Showgrounds from the Country Football and Netball Program. The Victoria government is also giving $100,000 for the $1.2 million upgrade at Woodend’s Gilbert Gordon Reserve.

He’s a bloody legend Woodend’s Graham Boyd has donated blood more than 100 times. And because of his persistence, tens of thousands of blood donations are taking place in Australia every year. Mr Boyd wouldn’t take no for an answer when he turned 71 and was told he was no longer eligible to donate. The Woodend resident said his doctor agreed he was still healthy enough to continue giving blood, despite his age. Mr Boyd began a campaign to have the age restriction lifted, writing a series of letters to the Australian Red Cross Blood Service and preparing to take his case before the Age
Discrimination Board. In response to his efforts, in November 1998, the age limit for blood donation was raised to 80 years, subject to the fitness of the donor. Mr Boyd was awarded the Cota Senior Achievers Award at the Victorian Seniors of the Year Awards this month. “I’m still up on cloud nine,” Mr Boyd said. Earlier this year, he received a letter from the Australian Red Cross Blood Service thanking him for his contribution. It advised him that last year 30,739 blood donations were made by Australians over the age of 71. Serena Seyfort

Backdown on reserve dog ban By Serena Seyfort Residents have successfully fought the introduction of the first “no dogs” site in Macedon Ranges, despite pressure on the council to protect Mount Gisborne Nature Reserve’s native animals. The 2017-21 Domestic Animal Management Plan, adopted by Macedon Ranges council last week, will not introduce a trial ban on dogs at
Mount Gisborne Nature Reserve as originally proposed. Instead, the council will next year trial an on-lead policy for dogs in the reserve. The proposed ban had been open for community feedback for two months and was equally split between those in favour and those against, prompting the council to compromise on an on-lead trial. The no dogs ban was in response to a petition
by the Friends of Mount Gisborne Nature Reserve which was put to the council in May. The petition, signed by 58 people, argued that “the presence of dogs even on leads poses a threat to the wellbeing” of the reserve’s native animals. It identified Mount Gisborne Reserve as “the only nature conservation zone in the area,” home to “eastern grey kangaroos, black wallabies, koalas, sugar gliders, brush-tailed
phascogales, echidnas, blue tongue lizards and copperhead snakes”. As part of The 2017-21 Domestic Animal Management Plan the council will introduce a cat monitoring program next year to gather evidence of what impact cats have on wildlife in bushland reserves. The results will be used to inform the council as it investigates the feasibility of introducing a cat curfew in 2020.
In honour of the 100-year anniversary of one of the Anzac’s greatest victories, at the Battle of Beersheba, Ken Atkinson has raised $7500 for the Creswick Light Horse Troop. The Woodend resident of 20 years presented the troop with the donation at the Woodend Clock Tower on Sunday. The Creswick Light Horse Troop travels around Australia depicting the Light Horse of World War I, to preserve the memory of the Australian Light Horse. Mr Atkinson is a veteran himself, having served in World War II, and his father and his uncle served in World War I. Also a member of the Woodend RSL, Mr Atkinson co-ordinated the sale of Gallipoli paraphernalia – scarves, socks, ties and rugs – around Macedon for the past three years. Rally for mental health service Calls for greater mental health help for young people in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges are growing. Among those joining the chorus for action is a 19-year-old Sunbury student who wants to see a dedicated mental health resource established. Tori Luke last week started charity Minds Matter, in collaboration with Sunbury Community Health, after a series of tragedies rocked the closeknit Sunbury and Macedon Ranges communities. “With the recent months that we’ve had … I think that now is the best time to push for [a mental health resource],” she said. “We can’t really take no for an answer any more.” Ms Luke is one of many residents who have taken to social media recently, pleading for help for the area’s young people. Minds Matter will next month run a fundraiser for a new mental health resource and to generate further awareness of the issue. Ms Luke said the event intended to highlight the resources currently available to young people while trying to attain a service that could be more effective. The fundraiser, Daisy Day, will include stalls from youth and mental health services, such as Sunbury Youth Centre and Goonawarra Neighbourhood House, as well as fun activities, food and drink. “We’re going to have mental health nurses walking around and people to talk to,” Ms Luke said.
Hundreds of locals have already registered support for the fundraiser on the event’s Facebook page. This week Ms Luke will meet Sunbury MP Josh Bull to discuss the need for a new local centre. Currently, the nearest youth mental health help for Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents is in Sunshine or Ballarat. “For young people it’s just unachievable to get there, especially when you’re in a bad state of mind,” Ms Luke said.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said that while there was much to be done in terms of the region’s mental health, she urged people to make use of the already available support. “There are some brilliant organisations and support groups in the Macedon Ranges, and I encourage anyone in need, young or old, to get in touch with their local GP and talk openly about how they’re feeling and find out what services are available to them,” she said. ‘No rules’ festival denied By Serena Seyfort Plans to host a “no rules” music festival with up to 10,000 attendees in Oaklands Junction have been shut down by Hume council. The council unanimously refused to grant a permit for the event after the proposal was met with concerns from Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Melbourne Airport and nearby residents. Event organiser Wonderland Touring Pty Ltd had planned that the 7000-10,000 attendees would be transported from Melbourne to the “unknown location” – land at Wildwood Winery on St John’s Road in Oaklands Junction – by up to 200 buses.

St John’s Road is a one-lane road with no street lighting that comes to a dead end. The event was planned for December 2, from 3pm-1am, and would sell alcohol and permit smoking – on grassland – during fire season. St John’s Road resident of 30 years Kevin O’Sullivan spoke against the event at Hume’s council meeting last week. “Be of no doubt that of the 16 residents who live in that road, we are all against the
proposal,” Mr O’Sullivan said. Concerns discussed at the meeting included the well-being of the more than 100 horses living on properties in the street, security, safety and gatecrashing. Prior to the council meeting, emergency services had expressed concern for the volume of traffic on St John’s Road, the site’s accessibility and the risk of grassfire. Councillors were also concerned that more than 4000 tickets had been sold for the event before the permit went before the council. The event’s advertising stated that patrons could “forget noise complaints, silence the neighbours, lynch the lockouts.” It told attendees: “There are no rules anymore.”
School springs into seasons Macedon Primary School hosted its first writers festival last week, paying tribute to Van Gogh’s Seasons artwork. The pupils wrote pieces inspired by the four seasons, which they then accompanied with their own artworks. The wider community was invited to the school last Thursday to show off the children’s written and artistic skills. Teacher Cathy Kean said an external writing teacher had been working at the school to expand the pupils’ writing abilities. “We’ve been on a journey of developing the children as writers,” Ms Kean said. New growth for vineyard A $45 million development in Sunbury has been welcomed with open arms by Hume council. The council unanimously voted to grant a planning permit for the project at 790 Sunbury Road, which will include a hotel, group accommodation, a restaurant, function centre and winery. Speaking at last week’s Hume council meeting, councillor Jack Medcraft said the plans for Goona Warra Vineyard would positively “change the whole face of Sunbury”. “This is probably the most exciting thing to happen in Sunbury since the rock festival and the Ashes,” Cr Medcraft said. The council approved repairing and refurbishing the site’s heritage-listed homestead and winery. Liquor licences were also granted. Four objections were submitted. When the planning proposal was released to the public in June, resident John Callaghan expressed concern to Star Weekly that the proposed “massive overdevelopment” would “impact on the actual vista of the area”. He had said residents would do whatever they could to stop the development. Cr Medcraft told the council meeting he thought “everybody in Sunbury should embrace” the new development. “Sunbury is no longer that little township,” Cr Medcraft said. Serena Seyfort

SPORT Tail end saves the day By Tara Murray Rupertswood will back its bowlers in to do the job against Bacchus Marsh in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Looking for its second win of the season, Rupertswood struggled early and at 6-59 looked set to be bowled out cheaply, but it pressed on to be 139, with three overs remaining. Captain-coach Andrew Pizaro said while on paper it looked like a low total, it could have been a lot worse. “From where we were early on, 139 is a better score than we thought,” he said. “It was hard to score and good shots that would normally pierce the field weren’t going to the boundary. “Bacchus Marsh is a really good bowling side and are very disciplined. There was a bit of a fightback and we’ve got the runs on the board.” Jack Hudd, in his first McIntyre Cup game, top-scored with 42, while Pizaro made 34. Rupertswood has a 1-1 record so far this season and continues to struggle with its batting. Pizaro said it had done a lot of work in the nets in the off season and the early rounds. “It’s about making sure the guys are confident about their own abilities and what their strengths are,” he said. “We’ve been doing a lot of training for specific drills and focusing on decision-making. We’re hitting a lot of balls at training.” Focus will turn to the bowling on Saturday, with Bacchus Marsh to resume on 0-4, chasing 139. Rupo is without opening bowler Aaron Forward this round, but Pizaro said they had plenty of options. “Chris Ryan is back and gives us another bowler and Jack Hudd bowls leg spin. Luke Shoesmith is a bowler and will have more confidence,” he said. “The outcome might be one or two, for what’s normally a boundary.” Pizaro said his first season as captain-coach has been a really positive experience. “There’s a really young crew and they want to learn and want to play better cricket, which is to their credit. “I don’t have to motivate them … Hopefully by Christmas we’ll start seeing everything coming together and see what we’ve created.” In other matches, Riddell is 4-27 chasing Digger Rest Bulla’s 98. Burras playing coach Rasika Batepola made 42 and has two wickets. Sunbury United is 3-33 chasing Lancefield’s 189, while Sunbury is 4-50 in reply to Woodend’s 169. Jakson Knight’s 150 set up Gisborne’s total of 5-306 against Romsey.

Batting blitz in GDCA B grade Batsmen have dominated again in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. For a second successive round, the scores were piled on by the batting teams on the opening day of matches. Ashfield will need to have a day out with the bat if it is to overcome St Anthonys, which made 5-334. Nathan Dantonio scored a second straight century, making 188 not out. Shane Barry took four wickets for Ashfield, with the fifth being a run out. East Sunbury also has a chase on its hands against Bacchus Marsh. The Bulls made 303, bowled out in the 65th over. Lachlan Wilkins was the standout bowler with 7-68. The Thunder will have confidence it can get the job done, having made more than 300 in the last round. Kyneton will resume at 1-29 in reply to Eynesbury’s 6-294. The Eagles did the damage early on with an opening partnership of 180. While Macedon isn’t chasing a score near 300, it will still need a good innings to beat Gisborne. The Dragons made 236, with Oliver Clough taking three wickets for Macedon. In the other game, Wallan is well on its way to victory against Riddell. The Magpies will resume at 3-71, chasing Riddell’s 174. Tara Murray

Defeat is relative for the Sunbury family Sunbury enjoyed a family affair in Bowls Victorian Pennant division 1, section 1 on Saturday. The club’s top side had four different families making up 10 members of the side’s 16 players against Moonee Valley. Shane Trewarne and his children, Todd and Lisa, and Wayne Long and his children, Paul and Mikayla, made two father-daughter-son combinations. Regular skips Mark Cowan and daughter Elise were both in the team, as were sister and brother Tayla and Lachie Morison. Bowls Victoria said it was rare to have father-son-daughter combinations, let alone have more than one in the same side. The other family combinations made it an even rarer event. Sunbury’s David Glennon said the weekend’s line-up showed that it was a real family club.
He saw the number of teenagers in the side as a good sign for the club’s future. The family atmosphere was slightly soured, though, with Sunbury suffering its second loss of the season. Facing Moonee Valley, one of two undefeated sides, Sunbury went down 81 (13)-74 (5). Mark Bullows’ rink continued its unbeaten start, winning 20-19, and Todd Trewarne, in his first game for the club, led his rink to a 20-17 win. Mark Cowan’s rink shared the points, after finishing 18-18 and Elise Cowan’s rink lost 27-16. Glennon said it was pretty close match all day. Having lost to both the undefeated teams in the competition, he said the team had a good idea of where it sat. “They’ve been narrow losses in both those games,” he said.
“There’s not much in it … one or two shots here or there and it’s a different story. “We’ve drifted a little bit from the top sides with those results, though.” Despite the loss, Sunbury remains fourth. Glennon said the club still had a few players to come back into the side, including Carla Krizanic, who was missing due to other bowling commitments. In the Central Highlands Bowls Division top grade, Lancefield lost to Bacchus Marsh Gold 105 (16)-84 (2), Gisborne beat Kyneton 105 (16)-86 (2), Kyneton Golf defeated Romsey 102 (16)-79 (2) and Trentham beat Bacchus Marsh Blue 129 (18)-67 (0). Wickets tumble as Burras work hard on a slow field It was wickets galore when Diggers Rest Bulla and Riddell went head-to-head in a Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup match on Saturday. Fourteen wickets fell on the opening day of play, leaving the match evenly poised. The Burras were in trouble early at 4-18, before a middle order fightback pushed them to 4-59. But wickets then fell frequently and the Burras were bowled out for 98. Playing coach Rasika Batepola top-scored for the Burras with 42. He said 98 was a better score than what it was looking like earlier in the match. “We lost the toss and the grass was long so we were slow getting going,” he said. “Our top order is yet to find form yet and have had low scores. We’ve had some players out … our top order will get stronger. “We need them to make sure they’re batting 10 to 15 overs to take the shine off the ball, but they haven’t done it yet. With a slow outfield the score of 98 is more like a 140-150 target.”
Matthew Livingstone continued his hot form for Riddell taking 4-18. The Burras got off to the best possible start with the ball, having Riddell in trouble at 4-27. Darren Quarrell and Batepola have two wickets each for the Burras. Batepola said despite defending less than 100 he thought they were a good chance to win. Riddell danger man Mick Allen is still in the sheds for the Bombers. “In the opening round we played the premiers of the last two seasons and we made 106 and beat them,” Batepola said. “We need to take two or three early wickets and put the pressure back on them.” Batepola, who is new to the competition, said he was adjusting to playing with the Burras. He said playing on hard wickets was a lot different to playing on turf. “I’m just settling in. The boys have been really good,” he said. “We need a couple of people to find form and everything will be good.” There was plenty of other wickets in the other McIntyre Cup matches as well, with both sides
batting on day one in four of the five matches. Rupertswood made 139 against Bacchus Marsh in their match. The Bulls will resume at 0-4. Sunbury United will resume at 3-33 against Lancefield, which made 189. Sunbury lost early wickets against Woodend and will resume at 4-50, chasing Woodend’s 169. Gisborne was the only side to bat out the day, making 5-306 against Romsey. Jakson Knight finished 150 not out. Tigers are heating up By Tara Murray The Kyneton Tigers’ men are enjoying the challenge of their first season in the Country Basketball League. The Tigers may not be getting the results they would like, but coach Matt Bourke said it had been an exciting time for the side. “We’re trying to bring together some young guys and getting them playing a higher level than domestic basketball,” he said. “The crowd we had in the first round was really surprising – we didn’t expect that many people there to watch.” The club decided to step up to the CBL this season to give its players a chance to represent Kyneton at a senior level. The Tigers are without a win from their first three matches in the north-west division but Bourke said they had taken positives from each game as they start to gel as a team. He said they were in all three games for at least some of the time.
On Saturday, the Tigers lost to Maryborough Blazers 89-68. It was only late in the game that the margin blew out. Former AFL big man Nathan Thompson top-scored with 12 points for Kyneton, while Bourke scored 11. Missing on Saturday night were Jordan Mangan and Matt Quinn. Bourke said he expected both of them to play big roles in matches to come. Mangan has represented Victoria on a number of occasions. “We’ll look for Jordan to do the bulk of the scoring,” Bourke said. “Matt will lead from the front as well. He played with the Sunbury Jets a couple of seasons ago and is another big guy who can monster the boards.” Bourke said the side’s strength this season would be inside the paint through Mangan, Quinn and Thompson. He said one of the main aims was to get games into some of the younger players and help with their development.

Dylan Tunn, Riley Matricardi and Brendan McCarthy are three players who will get opportunities. “Hopefully, we can balance up the aim of being competitive and trying to win and getting minutes into the younger guys and trying to develop them,” Bourke said. “It’s not about being results driven this year. We’ll try and be competitive, but wins aren’t the main thing.” Meanwhile, the Kyneton women’s side fell short against Maryborough Blazers, also on Saturday night. The Blazers did some damage early to gain a lead of 19-2. That margin was too much for the Tigers, who eventually lost 80-62. Missing several key players and with only seven players making the trip, the Tigers were always going to have a tough time of it. Jess Mangan top-scored with 22 points. The Kyneton men’s and women’s sides will host Swan Hill Flyers and then the Horsham Hornets this weekend.
Molly Warburton and Madison Prespakis have been named in the AFL Women’s Academy squads for next year. Prepakis, who plays for the Sunbury Lions, has been named in the squad for a second straight season. She moves from the level one squad to the level two squad, which is for top age players. Warburton, also named in the level two squad, has been named in the squads for the first time. The Gisborne Rookies player was named the AFL Goldfields’ Riddell girls youth league best and fairest winner. Both women played for the Calder Cannons this year. Their Cannons teammate, Georgia Patrikios, has been named in the level one squad.

The latest Suzuki Swift displays the Japanese company’s history of engineering excellence with a particularly well-sorted drivetrain. Its 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine, mated with an excellent CVT, is a real delight to sit behind. Our test car, the Suzuki Swift GL Navigator with Safety Pack, provided seamless and seemingly effortless operation in almost all circumstances. The new Swift has taken on a more assertive look, especially up front, with a wide open radiator and lower bumper grille making a positive statement. Fenders add more muscle to a lower and wider stance, while blacked out pillars give the impression of a floating roof. Rear door handles ‘hidden’ in the C-pillar again follow the modern design trend without taking anything away from the Swift character. Swift GL Navigator grades feature multi-reflector halogen headlamps, with LED daytime running lamps in the front bumper. The 16-inch alloy wheels come with low rolling resistance tyres designed to minimise fuel use, but still deliver a high level of comfort. A 7.0-inch four-quadrant touch screen positioned at driver’s eye level on the central dashboard, enables easy access to audio and video playback and hands-free phone and navigation. Thanks to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the driver can also connect a smartphone. The 1.2 Dualjet engine’s main aim is to increase fuel efficiency. Six airbags are standard across the new Swift range. Active safety takes in electronic stability control, ABS anti-skid braking with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.
