Let there be lights? By Serena Seyfort For 166 years, Gisborne residents have embraced the semi-rural nature of their town. Valued for its village feel and open spaces, locals have fought against fast-food franchises and apartment-style housing in a bid to retain the town’s country vibe. Now the prospect of traffic lights in the town is fuelling concern about its evolving character. Due to safety concerns, VicRoads is planning to install lights at the intersection of Saunders and Station roads as part of an $8-$9 million upgrade it hopes will be funded in next year’s state budget. Former councillor and police sergeant John Letchford is one of those fighting against traffic lights being installed in Gisborne. Mr Letchford, who has taken courses in traffic management and analysis, agrees work is needed to improve safety at the intersection, particularly with the stream of trucks that use it daily. “That intersection does need treatment – but not traffic lights,” he said. The Gisborne resident said he had been observing the intersection at different times of the day and had seen barely any pedestrians. He noticed traffic surges only during evening peak. He said he wanted to see the community involved in the decision to install traffic lights. “There should be more community consultation on the alternatives,” he said. “We need an active and engaged community. Help on hand for patients

Macedon Ranges volunteers are helping fellow residents access medical care in Kyneton. A group of 15 locals is taking turns to drive patients to and from Kyneton District Health Service. Kyneton’s 85-year-old Nancy Foote is one of the patients benefitting from the new courtesy car initiative. Ms Foote’s mobility scooter isn’t suitable to transport her across town, and her daughters aren’t always available to take her to medical appointments. East Trentham’s David Pritchard is one of the volunteers helping people such as Ms Foote make it to health services. “It’s nice to be able to put something back into the community,” Mr Pritchard said. Dr Robert Power said the service would help residents keep on top of their health. Mr Power said people tended to wait until their health had deteriorated to get to an appointment when they had access to limited care. Classy revamp in Gisborne Gisborne Primary School will receive a $1.628 million upgrade next year. The upgrades, designed by architects Bryant Alsop, will modernise and reconfigure classrooms into a horseshoe shape. The school’s prep and administration areas will also be modernised. Minister for Education James Merlino and Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas toured the school last week to discuss the upgrade. Ms Thomas said she was looking forward to the work starting. “Gisborne Primary School is growing and is expected to have over 460 students next year,” she said. “We need to make sure they have the facilities they need.” Work is scheduled to begin in the second half of next year and to be completed in 2019. The upgrades are being funded by $1.628 million allocated to the school in the 2017-18 state budget.

Last call for Romsey pub Romsey Hotel has officially called it a day, leaving the small town without a pub for the first time in 150 years. And it doesn’t look like any future owners are going to bring back the historic watering hole. Service came to a halt and the windows of Romsey Hotel were boarded up earlier this month. Owner and long-time hotelier Jim Hogan has confirmed that the property is on the market. “The property is up for sale and I have

received many offers already from a variety of different business operators/developers,” Mr Hogan said. “Unfortunately there are no hoteliers among them.” Mr Hogan did not reveal the potential buyers, but said “hopefully the new use of the site will be acceptable to the community”. He unsuccessfully fought residents and Macedon Ranges council to introduce 30 poker machines at the pub in 2008. He subsequently lost an appeal at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Mr Hogan owns Hogans Hotel in Wallan and The Hotel Shamrock in Bendigo. He said some of the former Romsey Hotel staff were considering positions at his other venues.

More routes for Gisbus service By Serena Seyfort Gisborne residents can look forward to all-day weekly bus services and extended routes. The Gisbus is set to get 15 extra services and a number of new stops from November 20. The route 473 bus will gain an extra three services on weekdays and will travel further along Willowbank Road to Bloomfield Road to service more people in the town’s south east. Bullengarook will also be included, with the route 474 bus service extended to Gisborne Road. Gisborne Roads and Transport Group chairman Russell Mowatt said the group was “ecstatic” about the announcement of an all-day bus service. “The Gisborne district is rapidly growing and we look forward to the Gisbus expanding in future to those areas which currently do not have access to this service,” Mr Mowatt said. The group had been campaigning for an all-day service to help reduce congestion in the thriving town. Mr Mowatt had said an off-peak service would encourage people to visit the town off-peak and help with parking problems. He said the group would now turn its attention to pushing for a weekend bus service and promoting the existing service. Almost 6000 people currently use the Gisbus service each month. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas announced the weekday changes last week, saying the need for extra services was clear. “Gisbus was the first of its kind and has proven a fantastic success story with local residents,” she said. Colourful walk a healthy start Sunbury and Macedon Ranges kids are putting their best feet forward for VicHealth’s Walk to School campaign. During October, primary school pupils are decorating their shoes, bikes and scooters to make a colourful impression on their way to and from school. Gisborne Primary School is taking the health promotion to the next level by adding the fun of crazy socks and stockings. Malmsbury Primary School, Lancefield’s St Mary’s School, Sunbury Heights Primary School and Sunbury West Primary School are also bringing colour to school routes. In its 12th year, the statewide Walk to School program encourages children to become more active. The number of Victorian kids walking to school has significantly declined according to VicHealth. It says almost 50 per cent of children walked to school in the 1970s, compared to just 20 per cent in 2011. As children in rural areas have greater barriers to walking to school, the organisation encourages parents to park a few blocks from school to incorporate some exercise into the daily commute. The first stage of $20 million safety upgrades on MelbourneLancefield Road, between Sunbury and Monegeetta, is under way. Long game recognised Sunbury’s Edward Jarrett has been recognised for his tireless contribution to the community. The Sunbury resident of 44 years was honoured with a Senior Achiever Award at the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards at Government House last week. Mr Jarrett said the recognition was unexpected. “I just do what I do because I want to do it,” he said. The former Goonawarra Golf Club president was instrumental in the creation of the Veterans Golf Classic competition, which encourages seniors to play golf in a friendly environment, and has raised more than $200,000 for various charities. Mr Jarrett said he began the competition 22 years ago when he was Goonawarra Golf Club

president. “At that point in time I saw a need for a lot of older people to get more active in sport,” he said. He said that along with a couple of other people he formed a club called Hume Veterans Golf Club, which went on to run the Veterans Golf Classic. Mr Jarrett said the competition for people who are 55 years and over began with just 36 participants in the first year, then grew to become an entity at 25 clubs across Victoria. Each competition raises funds for various charities and projects. The Veterans Golf Classic continues on today, but Mr Jarrett has stepped away from its management. Serena Seyfort

Tenants welcome rent reform By Benjamin Millar Renters and tenants rights groups have welcomed state government reforms aimed at rebalancing the housing ledger with landlords. The government announced a package of reforms last week that includes a cap on rental bonds, a crackdown on rental bidding, a limit on rent increases to once a year and an end to “no specified reason” evictions. Victoria’s 1.5 million renters will also have the right to keep pets and make minor modifications, such as installing picture hooks.

Other changes include establishing a landlord and real estate agent blacklist and a new commissioner for residential tenancies. Tenants Victoria chief executive Mark O’Brien said it was virtually impossible for tenants to feel secure in their homes when they could be evicted without proper reason. “The Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) is 20 years old and the holes are showing,” he said. “It was made for a time when renting was only temporary.” Real Estate Institute of Victoria chief executive Gil King argues the reforms will

significantly imbalance the market in favour of tenants at the expense of “mum and dad” investors. “The Andrews government has been short-sighted in introducing these reforms which will decimate the private rental market, ultimately driving up rents and reducing

the supply of rental properties at a time of unprecedented population growth,” he said. Consumer Affairs Minister Marlene Kairouz said more people were renting and for longer. “These changes will crack down on rental bidding, make it easier and faster for renters to get their bond back, and will better hold landlords and agents to account for their actions,” she said. Australian Bureau of Statistics 2016 census results revealed that 21.2 per cent of Sunbury residents rent, while 14.8 per cent of Macedon Ranges residents are renters.

Award takes a village A Sunbury-based day care service has been recognised as one of the best in the country. Manager Michelle Pasic said the team was “thrilled” to have been chosen. She put the achievement down to the commitment of the educators and Sunbury Community Health’s dedication to ensuring every child had access to quality care. The 39-year-old service supports and trains its educators with regulated early childcare education. The educators then care for the children in their own homes.

Family Day Care Australia chief executive Andrew Paterson said the Sunbury-based service was listed as a finalist because it demonstrated “strong engagement with the national quality framework and the highest standards in educator practice; educator support and business management”. “The family day care service is an integral part of the community, providing flexible, quality education and care with the aim of achieving excellent outcomes for children,” Mr Paterson said. The National Service of the Year will be announced in New South Wales on October 28. Mrs Millar, a Mount Macedon resident of more than 20 years, has been officially endorsed by the Liberal Party’s Victorian Division as its Macedon candidate after being preselected by local and state liberal party members in Lancefield last month. Ringing in pro wrestling A pro wrestling event is hitting up Sunbury this month. The Premier Championship match will feature long-time Sunbury resident Jonathan Preston. Preston, who has recently moved to another suburb, said he was very excited to be starring in an event back in his “home town”. Seven wrestling matches will take place at Sunbury Memorial Hall on Saturday, October 28, as well as a dance performance and vocals. Preston said he hoped residents would get into this one-off event for Sunbury. “I think they’re kind of starving for something like this,” he said. The wrestler said he wanted to steer clear of any wrestling stigma, emphasising that it was an event that all the family could enjoy. “It’s such a big, family-friendly atmosphere,” he said. “It’s one hundred per cent appropriate for children.”

Mother of all picnics in Macedon A new mothers group that fosters connectivity while supporting local charities and small businesses has taken off in Macedon Ranges this year. Each month, women and children from across the area gather at a free picnic to socialise and take time out. Attendees are asked to bring a small item to contribute to a nominated charity. The mothers are then entered into a raffle to win a prize provided by a local business or service. Lancefield’s Ashley Collins formed the group based on the national Babes and Picnics

program. Mrs Collins said the group had been a huge success since it began in May. “It’s been really warmly received in the community, both by picnic goers and small business supporters,” she said. “Typically we get between 40 and 70 mums, plus one to three children per mum [at a picnic].” More than 200 people attended last month’s picnic, which also hosted partners in celebration of Father’s Day. Mrs Collins said all were welcome at the group.

“It’s an open, non-judgemental, come-as-you-are place where hopefully, for a couple of hours, mums can relax, watch their kids make new friends, and make new friends themselves,” she said. So far the picnics have supported Kyneton Caring Community, Cobaw Community Health, the local Men’s Sheds, and national charities Share the Dignity and PANDA. Macedon Ranges council has been recognised for its efforts to prevent an increase in family violence following emergencies. The council was highly commended at the 2017 Resilient Australia Awards last month for its Prevention of Violence Against Women in Emergencies project. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said it was wonderful to be acknowledged for the work. “This is an important achievement that reinforces how important it is that we all work together and support our local communities when impacted by emergencies,” Cr Anderson said. “Councils play such an important role in helping local communities prepare for, and recover from, emergencies.” Macedon Ranges council’s project aims to raise awareness of research that shows there is an increase in the incidence, prevalence and severity of family violence following an emergency, both in affected communities and among the families of emergency responders. The project also provides resources to support affected communities and volunteers, and is supported by Victoria Police and Country Fire Authority. MY PLACE This month, Louis Bokor and his wife Anna are celebrating 40 years of living in Gisborne. Louis likes the open space and country-life in the Macedon Ranges, while being close to the city’s benefits. He speaks with Serena Seyfort. What’s your connection to Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges?

It’s a double-benefit for me and my wife. I’ve got a love of being out in the country but close to the city. The other thing is you get in the car and you’re already going for a drive in the country, and there’s lots of interesting places to go. When we first moved up here we used to go horse riding in Wombat State Forest. It’s also a very friendly place. It’s lovely to meet people that you know down the street and have a chat. In Gisborne I still think there’s a population where you know most of the people.

My wife Anna and I moved to Sunbury in 1971 because I started working for the weather bureau at Melbourne airport. Then in 1977 we moved to Gisborne. This month we’ve been here for 40 years. How have you been involved in the local community? My three children went to school at Gisborne Primary School then they all went through Braemar College. My wife worked as a nurse with the Sunbury Community Health centre. I played squash at the local squash for many years in Gisborne and I played badminton at Tony Clarke for a while. And I’m a member of the Calder Fly Flying Association.

The club is four years old, I’ve been a member since just after it started. We mainly fish in the Macedon Ranges and we go down towards Daylesford, and sometimes to Geelong and the Western District. It is alleged that there are still some trout in the local streams. There are still some fish in Jacksons creek in some places. The big drought sort of decimated the numbers. There has been a little bit of a push from some of our membership to get the fisheries to restock Jacksons Creek. The first fish I ever caught on fly was in Jacksons Creek

In spring we like to go and see the wildflowers along Conglomerate Gully just outside Riddells Creek. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be?

Tell us about fly fishing and being part of the Calder Fly Fishing Association. Are there many fish locally?

in Clarkefield. Back in those days I was a bait fisherman. At the Clarkefield bridge there were fish jumping out of the water. I threw the bait around and they just were not interested. I noticed a whole lot of midges (little black insects) flying around, and I took the bait off

my hook and took some black cotton out of my jeans, threw it into the water and bang! Instant fish. And I thought a-ha, this is what fly fishing’s all about. What do you like about the Macedon Ranges?

It’s less about change, more about preservation of the character of the area. As population increases we need to make sure that the open spaces and the easy access to rural environment is preserved. I belong to the Friends of Daly Nature Reserve – the reserve is just up the top of our street. To have a piece of almost pristine bushland in the middle of town is something special. We have a garden of almost two acres and we have a great variety of native birds that come and enjoy and breed. We also have a mob of about 18 kangaroos ranging our area because of the space. They’re not tame, but they’re very friendly.

Itâ€™s a notably odd thing to be served a burger without the option of fries â€“ but itâ€™s no problem as we simply accept that Junie Moonâ€™s is not a deep-fryinâ€™ kind of place. And certainly Bennie has no complaints at all about his smokey braised brisket burger with cheese and citrus mayo ($16.50). He rates the plentiful, juicy, tender meat very highly. The house-made gnocchi with chicken and mushrooms in a garden tarragon, wine and cream sauce ($16) is very rich, but it is divinely tangy and ripe with tarragon flavour. We enjoy excellent coffees and half each of a wonderful gluten-free chocolate brownie ($4). Finally, every bit as good as anything weâ€™ve eaten is the pot of superb raspberry, vanilla and orange jam we take home. Itâ€™s brilliant.

SPORT Bowlers take control By Tara Murray Gisborne’s bowlers have done the job for a second week in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup, and now it’s up to the batsmen to finish it off. The Dragons got their premiership defence off to a disappointing start in round one when they failed with the bat, letting Diggers Rest Bulla off the hook. With a point to prove, the Dragons’ bowlers came out firing against Lancefield on Saturday. The Dragons kept the Tigers to 169 on what was a high-scoring day in other matches. Dragons coach Glenn Waites said it was another strong performance with the ball. Skipper Jarryd Vernon was the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets. Vernon is set to bowl a few more overs this season, after taking the gloves for the second part of last season. He has already bowled more overs in two games than he did for last season. “He’s a pretty gifted cricketer and last year he took the gloves and kept well,” Waites said. “A few years prior he took 30 wickets in a season. With Roby Lane going to premier cricket, we needed another spinner and they don’t grow on trees.” Ryan Millar top scored for the Tigers with 29. Despite being happy with the bowling, Waites was left slightly disappointed with how the day finished. Facing 45 minutes at the end of the day, the Dragons were 2-40 at stumps to leave the game in the balance. Waites said they would need to bat well to win. “We would have loved to have been none down at stumps,” he said. “Last week we didn’t do ourselves any favours. After running a program the past two seasons, with all players in the one competition and location, this season the association will run the program like its other competitions. Clubs will field their own teams, instead of players being put into teams, and will have home and away matches. Junior girls co-ordinator Angela Dempsey said the association was hoping to have three age groups, 11 and under, under-15s and under-18s, to give the girls the chance to develop against players their own age. They’ve only had interest to field teams in the lower two age groups. She said at this stage, they were planning four teams in each competition, but said ideally they would have six. Riddell, Woodend, Kyneton, Hanging Rock, Wallan and Bacchus Marsh are considering entering teams. Dempsey said having all the games in the one location had affected participating with some people from Bacchus Marsh, Wallan and other outer areas not prepared to travel every week. “This [new program] allows teams to develop a member base and makes it easier to campaign to get girls playing.” The competition will run for five weeks starting in November, before finishing the season next year. The under-15s will play finals. Games are all on Friday nights and this year the clubs will also hold training sessions for the girls. All clubs are still looking for players. Woodend Cricket Club is holding a come-and-try day on October 27 between 5.30-6.30pm at Gilbert Gordon Reserve.

Cannons hot shots ready for AFLW Two Calder Cannons players are expected to be among the top 10 selections at the AFLW draft this week. Midfielder Monique Conti and forward Chloe Molloy have both been touted as possible number one draft picks on Wednesday afternoon. Cannons girls football manager Pauline Leslie said the club had no doubt that both girls would be selected. Selection would top a massive year for Conti who is also a Women’s National Basketball League player. Conti, who played both basketball and football growing up, recently signed a four year contract with the Melbourne Boomers. She was named in the All-Star Five team at the under-17 world basketball championships last year. It’s a journey that Leslie wishes she was able to do growing up. “She’s managed both sports and we

supported her in the that,” Leslie said. “She’s living the dream, playing basketball and now football at this level.” Molloy gave up a promising basketball career to return to football, a game she gave up when she was younger. Molloy had been a development player with the Melbourne Boomers and planned to attending college in America. Leslie said Molloy has come a long way this season. “She said to me at the start of the year, ‘I’ll have to learn to kick again’,” she said. “She knew she had a long way to go to play football. She’s since won the TAC Cup goalkicking [award] with another girl, won the VFL goalkicking with Katie Brennan, won the TAC Cup best and fairest and was named in the TAC Cup team of the year.” Molloy’s courage was also applauded when she returned to the field in the VFL women’s

grand final after suffering a shoulder injury. Conti and Molloy were the only two Cannons players invited to the first AFL women’s national combine. Leslie said there was a possibility other Cannons players might be selected later in the draft or as rookies. With at least two players to be drafted this year, it’s been a good start for the Cannons’ TAC Cup program. AFL Victoria previously ran a program under the Cannons banner, but this year was the first time the Cannons have run the program. “For me it is exciting,” Leslie said. “There’s a pathway for girls now and hopefully I can help these girls achieve their dreams.” The Cannons have already held one talent search day looking for players for next season. Sunbury Vets nail first win Sunbury & District Veteran’s Cricket got its first win of the season with a strong win against Richmond Union. Sunbury restricted Richmond Union to 119 from its 40 overs. Phil Hickleton, in his first game for the club, took 4-12, while Gary Dickson, who was also making his debut, took 2-3. Sunbury chased down the runs with ease, passing the total with 15 overs to spare and five wickets in hand. Dave Cordy top scored with 44 before retiring. Hickleton was named man of the match.

Lobb gets the nod as Burras coach

Jamie Lobb will step into the coaching hot seat at Diggers Rest. Lobb, who has played at the Riddell District Football League club the past three years, was named the Burras senior coach on Wednesday last week. Lobb replaces Shaun Sims, who decided to stand down from the role after four seasons. “It all happened pretty quickly,” Lobb said. “I got a call from the club on the weekend and we sat down and had a chat. “Shaun was always up in the air [about continuing]. He felt it was time to take a year off and freshen up a bit.” Sims, who coached the side to four grand finals including last year’s premiership, will remain involved at the club. “He’ll still be around the club and he’ll play twos,” Lobb said.

“The work he has done for his club has been massive. He knows the league inside out.” One of the Burras’ key players, Lobb will combine his on-field role and coaching. He said he always saw himself moving into coaching. He was a playing assistant coach at the Burras for the past three years. “It’s always been on the cards,” he said. “Diggers Rest is a good place to start.” Shane Bishop, who has also been assistant coach the past couple of years, will remain on board and provide Lobb with assistance. The Burras find themselves in an unusual position this off season – this year they didn’t make the grand final – the first time since 2012. The Burras were knocked out in the preliminary final by Rupertswood. Lobb said there was fire in the belly of the side after a season that didn’t live up to expectations.

“Everyone felt disappointed with the way we finished things off,” he said. “We couldn’t string enough games together and we didn’t play well at the end of the year. “We battled away and lost a few games we shouldn’t have.” Lobb said he had started talking to the playing group about next season and signs were positive that the club would retain most, if not all, its list. “I’ve spoken to every senior player and 95 per cent are on board,” he said. “You always like to bring in a couple of players … we’ll sit down next week and work out who we want to get. “We’ve got a pretty tight playing group and it’s a good place to be.” Tara Murray

Thunder batsmen let rip By Tara Murray East Sunbury has enjoyed a day out with the bat against Gisborne in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B grade. Coming off a tie in the opening round, East Sunbury enjoyed the conditions at home against Gisborne. The Thunder started well and built partnerships throughout the innings – very pleasing for captain-coach Jessy Carroll. The Thunder was bowled out for 339 in the third last over. “All the boys contributed and we didn’t really rely on one person,” Carroll said. “We were missing our opening batsman [Shannon McDorman] and first drop [Brayden Jinks] and we had to reshuffle a few players. We had younger players step up.” Liam Sherlock was the star at the top of the order, making quick runs before being run out for 99. Lachlan Brne (87no) and Jaxon Mobilio (44) finished the job by pushing the score beyond 300. Two of the younger players in the side, they both produced their top scores. Carroll said that was a pleasing sign for the future of the club. “We looked liked we would make high 200s, but then they got going,” he said. “I got to see them bat properly together for once. “It gives you confidence that if we are in trouble they can stand up.” Carroll said this season the club expected much of its improvement in the side to come from within the playing group. The Thunder missed finals last season. “We’ve got the same core group as last year,” he said. “We’ve picked up a couple of players who have left and come back. “Brayden Jinks turned up just before the start of the season. He’s played a lot a turf cricket. “We’re going to give the younger guys a bit more of an opportunity. They’ve grown up a bit more.” It was a batsman’s weekend in B grade, with the Thunder one of three sides posting scores in excess of 330 as players made the most of the perfect conditions. Hayden Castle, who owns the record for the highest score in the McIntyre Cup, had a big day for Eynesbury against Ashfield. Castle made 186 in the Eagles’ score of 7-394. Ashfield will resume at 0-16. Despite posting nearly 400, the Eynesbury score was nowhere near the highest score of the weekend. Wallan took that honour by making 8-483 against Bacchus Marsh. The Magpies went at better a run a ball for their 75 overs, with four batsmen making 60 or more. While there were some big scores on the cards, Macedon and Kyneton are in a much closer fight.

Oliver Clough (44) and Pat Trotta (39) put on 87 for the Macedon opening partnership and they looked set for a big score. But the wicket of Trotta started a collapse for Macedon, which went from 0-87 to all out for 122.

Kyneton will resume at 5-48. Clough has three of Macedon’s wickets. In the other match, Riddell made 7-223 against St Anthonys. Skipper Heath Brown top scored with 60.

Sunbury opened its account in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 on Saturday. After a tight loss in the opening round of the season, Sunbury proved too strong for Altona (2) winning 79 (16)-61 (2). Carla Krizanic bounced back from an opening round loss to win her rink 27-18. Mark Cowan’s rink also got its first win of the season, winning 19-14. Marc Bullows’ rink won 18-13 to make it two from two. The only losing rink was that of Elise Cowan, which lost 16-15, going down on the final end of the day. Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was pleasing to get a strong win early in the season. “It was a good response after last week,” he said. “Getting 16 points is pretty good and now puts us 1-1. “We still picked up four points last week, so we’re in a good position.” Glennon said the performance of Bullows, who has skipped for the first time this season, had been a real positive. “When opportunity knocks you’ve got to take it and he’s taken it with both hands. He’s had a good start.” Sunbury still has players to come back into the top side. It faces Melton on Saturday. Melton also sits 1-1 after being smashed by Moonee Valley. The Central Highlands Bowls Division season starts this week. In division 1, Kyneton plays Trentham, Lancefield hosts Kyneton Golf, Romsey plays Gisborne and the two Bacchus Marsh teams do battle. The latest version of the compact Subaru SUV aligns closely under the skin to the Subaru Impreza hatch and is looking to further improve Subaru’s growing market share in this segment. Offered in four variants with price-drops across the range, the XV starts at $27,990, and boasts a handy list of standard features. It challenges the Mazda CX-3, Nissan Qashqai, Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR and we feel has the firepower to stay the course. It’s the only model in this class with permanent all-wheel-drive. Sunshine orange stitching, brushed metal highlights and a sleek, sculpted dash sets the tone for the interior of the new Subaru XV. It feels spacious and light and an easy, comfortable place to be in. An 8.0-inch colour infotainment screen and second smaller display grab the eye in a console that shows clear thought has been given to both layout and integrated design. Maybe not as funky as you would envisage for a car with the millennials in its focus, but with enough spirit to interest. Subaru has upped it standard features across the XV range while dropping the price. The top shelf 2.0i-S ($300 cheaper at $35,240) comes with all manner of goodies including leather trim, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, steering-responsive LED headlights, 18-inch alloys, electric sunroof, sat-nav, reverse camera and an enviable safety package. On the outside the Subaru XV remains striking and not easily forgotten. It is a mix of

Subaru’s impressive EyeSight system. For the uninitiated, it is a camera-based safety system that uses brake light recognition as the basis for a long list of driver-aid features. This includes things like autonomous emergency braking, brake assist, rear cross traffic alert, reverse automatic braking as well adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist. Vision Assist switches from high to low beam when it detects oncoming headlights. The XV also has six airbags, front seat-belt pre-tensioners with load limiters and the usual stability and traction control for a five star ANCAP rating. For the driver and the front passenger there is room that belies the nature of a compact SUV. The back seat copes well with two tallish adults, the higher middle perch and transmission tunnel making it harder to turn that two into three.
