Fair deal for garden types Green thumbs are being invited to cultivate their gardens – and their knowledge – at the Garden Lovers’ Fair. Mount Macedon and District Horticultural Society’s annual festival will take place at Bolobek in Mount Macedon on the weekend of October 7 and 8. Society president Stephen Ryan said informative presentations would be a major part of this year’s fair. Gardening celebrities – such as succulent expert Attila Kapitany and edible plant specialist Karen Sutherland and Mr Ryan – will share their horticultural knowledge. Claire Young, from Encouraging Women in Horticulture, will speak about furthering female involvement in horticulture on the Saturday. An array of plants, gardening books, specialist and artisan gardening tools, outdoor furniture and power equipment will be on sale. $4.2m for new centre A new community centre is on the way for Sunbury and its growing population. The state government last week announced it would fund a $4.2 million community hub in the township. The cash will come from the $50 million Shared Facilities Fund. The centre will be built between Sunbury Heights Primary School and Sunbury Downs Secondary College. It will be available for use by

both the schools and the Sunbury community and will include meeting and interview rooms, a commercial kitchen for training, events and activities, and health services for Hume council. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said the hub would better connect the schools and the community. “These great new facilities will be shared between the local schools and local residents, helping build a sense of community pride in

the schools and making local services more accessible,” Mr Bull said. Hume mayor Drew Jessop said the hub

would provide “an opportunity for the schools to host a variety of important services such as playgroups, preschool activity programs and learning programs and training”. Hume council will work with the schools to design the new hub. Hume council community services acting director Hector Gaston said the design process would begin in the coming months. He said the hub was expected to be up and running within two years.

Cycling push goes up a gear By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges residents want the council to take the lead and develop a more cycle-friendly culture. The residents, in a submission to the council’s draft leisure strategy, have called for more bike paths and areas to park and secure bikes. They have also highlighted the need for safe bike routes, particularly for children riding to school. Wilkinson’s Wheels founder Phil Wilkinson has submitted a strategy to the council, based on consultation with the community and cycling groups.

The submission focused on engaging all age groups in cycling more regularly, and proposed a “strong focus on behaviour change at a local level, improved assets and an integrated leisure and cycling plan”. Mr Wilkinson said the council’s current draft leisure strategy was “really weak on cycling”. The founder of local female cycling group Femmes and Velos, Tiffany Winchester, said residents wanted to combat bike riding being considered as simply sport. “We want it to not be seen as a big deal to get on your bike, but rather something that is normal behaviour,” she said.

Dr Winchester said her children being able to ride to school on a bike path was “the exception rather than the norm”, as most children did not have a safe route to ride on. Bike Safe Macedon Ranges member Jem Richards’ contribution to the submission agreed schoolchildren should have a safe route to ride to school. “We believe that everyone within three kilometres of the station and school should be able to walk or ride to school safely,” Mr Richards said on behalf of the group. The need to improve and establish more bike paths and facilities to park and secure bikes has been emphasised in Mr Wilkinson’s strategy.

Lockdown for charity

“Our cycling paths need to go somewhere and be connected for people to use them,” the submission stated. “It’s difficult to get around unless you are OK to go on/off the road.” The groups also want a change in the mindset towards cycling culture. “There also has to be drivers that look for kids on bikes,” Dr Winchester said. “Cyclists are still seen as always being in the way.” The submission also claimed a co-ordinated cycling strategy would help increase tourism to the area. “The community’s delivered a big picture strategic plan, now it can partner with council to move it forward,” Mr Wilkinson said.

Winter recedes and snakes slither forth

It has taken Brandon Richards five years to grow and maintain his dreadlocks but he’s about to lose them all at the hands of a Melton dog groomer. The 22-year-old Gisborne plumber is shedding his mane in a bid to raise at least $5000 for Muscular Dystrophy Australia – with more than $4000 already raised last week. Hair of the Dog groomers in Melton pledged to donate a dollar from each appointment to the charity and the business offered to groom Brandon as well, rounding out their fundraising effort to $400. Brandon will go under the shears at the Dreadlocks for Dystrophy event he is hosting at a camp in Rowsley on September 24 for youth living with the illness. He hopes the funds he raises will help those affected to buy equipment and help with other needs. Brandon lost his cousin Andrew to the disease in 2002. “Andrew was in a wheelchair from the age of 14 and while there are lots of different forms of the disease, Andrew had Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which moved very fast,” he said. “Everyone in our family remembers Andrew and I still remember how terrible it was.” Brandon said he has some reservations about shaving his locks but is looking forward to the change. “[When] Cutting concrete or doing other jobs bent over in confined places, having dreadlocks has been pretty frustrating at times,” he said. “They also seem to weigh 20 kilograms after I get out of the shower.” Details: bit.ly/2flRLA1

With temperatures on the rise, snakes are out and about in Sunbury and Macedon Ranges. Snake season typically kicks off in September and many sightings have already been reported in the Macedon Ranges. Local snake catcher Ross said his colleagues had already been receiving “many, many calls” to remove snakes from properties. Ross has been retrieving snakes across the Macedon Ranges for 15 years. His advice for anyone who encounters a snake is to “stay at a safe distance, keep an eye on it if possible, keep children and pets away from the snake, and call a local snake catcher”. Ross said residents should not try to interact with a snake in any way. “It’s actually illegal to kill a snake,” he said. The snake catcher said that while snakes might be scary, they were still wildlife. Fines from the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) can be issued to anyone killing the animals. To have a snake removed from private property, contact the DEPI on 136 186, who will refer a licensed snake catcher. To keep pets as safe as possible from snakes, the RSPCA advises pet owners to keep grass at a low height and to avoid having piles of rubbish or wood that can become snake hiding places.

Call for Rock plan to be dumped By Serena Seyfort Community groups have criticised the latest proposed master plan for Hanging Rock, claiming it should be dumped in favour of a more environment-friendly strategy. The draft Hanging Rock Master Plan Options Paper was drawn up by the Victorian government and Macedon Ranges council after community consultation, but has been met with a range of complaints. Macedon Ranges Residents’ Association (MRRA) condemned the plan in a submission

to the council, labelling it “another attempt to impose economic development priorities” on Hanging Rock. The association has rejected the proposed master plan’s intention to “re-brand” Hanging Rock, and called for “the current master plan be set aside” and a new master plan “that has the conservation and protection of natural values as its core objective” be prepared. Friends of Hanging Rock (FoHR) president Luke Spielvogel said the group had chosen to approach the draft options paper “with a glass half full” attitude, but was still concerned by a

number of issues. “Strategic work that would typically precede a master plan has not been completed,” he said. Mr Spielvogel said he feared the plan would result in “a roadmap to mediocrity” because the process sought to find a compromise between stakeholders, rather than “an overarching view of what’s best for Hanging Rock”. The group has called for transparency of finances and a strategy to ensure environmental values are protected. Both FoHR and MRRA continue to call for the East Paddock to be incorporated into the Crown Reserve.

Mr Spielvogel said amalgamation had always been intended and remained FoHR’s priority. “It was first discussed 40 years ago, promised 20 years ago, so the time has come for the council to make good,” he said. “And the steps to do so should form part of any master plan.” The draft Hanging Rock Master Plan Options Paper was available for comment from August 14 to September 15. According to the council, a master plan is expected to be considered for adoption by the council in December.

Sweet taste of success A Macedon Ranges bakery has had more than a taste of national success for its baked treats. Kyneton’s Country Cob Bakery has this year earned four national baking titles and two Victorian titles for its produce. The bakery took out the title of Australia’s 2017 Greatest Pepper Steak Pie at the 28th Official Great Aussie Meat Pie and Sausage Roll Competition in Sydney this month. Country Cob Bakery’s vanilla slice was also named Australia’s Best Apprentice Vanilla Slice at the Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph 2017 in August, with the bakery’s chefs taking out first and second place. In June, the business claimed Australia’s Best Mince Pie and Australia’s Best Gourmet Pie (Chilli Con Carne beef pie) at Australia’s Best Pie Competition. Baker’s assistant and pastry cook Ryan Khun said working with a great team in a good environment was crucial for the bakery’s

success, as well as using the best quality ingredients. Mr Khun said the current team only took over the business in May last year, and has worked to make sure all their food is perfect. He said the staff at Country Cob Bakery were rapt their hard work had paid off. “The team is so excited and thrilled to be the winners,” Mr Khun said. “The best feeling ever is having good comments about the food we bake and the service we provide.” He said the business was thinking of expanding. The Goonawarra Primary School community will next month celebrate the school’s 30th birthday. The school’s parents and friends group will host a fete on Friday, October 20, to mark the milestone. Sunbury’s top meal deal By Serena Seyfort Sunbury Neighbourhood Kitchen is inviting everyone to enjoy its cooking to celebrate its fourth birthday. At the charity’s annual fundraiser, Pay It 4ward, volunteers will provide a three-course buffet meal in return for a minimum donation of $40 a head. Co-founder Marianne Williams said a $40 contribution would “pay forward” about 10 meals for those who reach out to the charity. Mrs Williams said she hoped the community would rally around the event to support the group’s work.

“This is what helps us keep going for the year,” she said. “Every cent goes back into the Sunbury community. We don’t have any administration costs. Not one person gets paid.” Sunbury Neighbourhood Kitchen was started four years ago when Mrs Williams and her husband, Neil, wanted to make use of leftovers from their catering and party hire company. The group started as a Rotary Club of Sunbury project. But Mrs Williams said the organisation had come a long way since then. “We grew from four or five volunteers and a handful of guests,” she said. “Now 60 volunteers serve meals to 175 people every Monday night.” Last year, Sunbury Neighbourhood Kitchen became a stand-alone charity, with Mrs Williams saying the organisation had grown to feed more than just the homeless.

“When we started, we thought hunger was all we were going to be dealing with, but there’s more to it,” she said. “Isolation is a huge factor … connection is really important for an individual in Sunbury.” Mrs Williams said both guests and volunteers came to the kitchen seeking companionship.

Hume pokies limit spreads Sunbury will be subject to a cap on gaming machines after the state government moved to extend the current Hume limit across the rest of the municipality. The changes to the Gaming Machine Arrangements Bill were announced by Gaming and Liquor Regulation Minister Marlene Kairouz last week in a bid to reduce gambling-related harm. The Hume-wide restrictions come after the municipality had the state’s sixth highest level of gaming expenditure last year at $105.7 million. Up until now, Tullamarine, Broadmeadows, Coolaroo, Fawkner and Campbellfield were the only suburbs in Hume to have limits on the number of machines. The caps, applied in October, 2006, meant a ratio of no more than 10 gaming machines to 1000 adults in the area was permitted. It is not yet known how many gaming machines will be allowed in Sunbury under the new cap. There are currently 230 gaming machines in Sunbury across five different venues. In the year to June 30, these machines collected $18.5 million. Earlier this month the Hume council moved to push for state gambling reforms. Nine CFA vehicles attended an out-of-control burn-off at Blue Gum Plantations in Tylden last week. Firefighters were called to the scene on Trentham Road about 12.40pm on September 18. CFA members from Tylden, Woodend, Kyneton and Carlsruhe attended and the fire was under control just before 2.30pm. Following the incident, Mount Macedon CFA took to Facebook to remind residents to establish a fire break when burning off, and to ensure there are enough people to monitor the burn-off.

B&B gong a nice shock Braeside Mt Macedon Country Retreat has triumphed above 235 other local businesses to be named Macedon Ranges’ Business of the Year. The bed and breakfast also won the Excellence in Tourism category at the 2017 Bendigo Bank Macedon Ranges Business Excellence Awards ceremony last week. Owner Andrew Towner said he was shocked and excited about winning the titles. “We were in very good company with the other businesses there,” Mr Towner said. Set on the hillside of Mount Macedon, the B&B hosts guests year-round in its three cottages. Mr Towner said the cottages were fully booked on weekends, catering to both

interstate and international visitors. Functions and additional accommodation are hosted in Braeside House, a 100-year-old restored farmhouse. The business sources local produce for its catering, as well as harvesting its own fruit, vegetables and herbs to provide homemade bread, granola and jam for its guests. Gisborne retailer Cool Clutch was runner-up in this year’s awards, also winning the Excellence in Customer Service and Retail category. A Sunbury man in his 30s has been caught speeding twice within 18 minutes. The man was caught on Bulla Road, Bulla about 12.45pm last Thursday, allegedly doing 84km/h in a 60km/h zone. He was issued with a penalty notice. Fawkner Highway Patrol intercepted him 18 minutes later allegedly travelling at 135km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Western Ring Road. His Holden Commodore was impounded for 30 days. He is expected to be charged on summons.

“TABOO” When I was growing up there were certain subjects which were completely “taboo” - religion, politics, money and sex. These days all these subjects are discussed openly, loudly, often and by all ages. There is however, r one r, subject which needs to be spoken of more often and in every family. A sad subject, a confronting subject, but a subject which has touched most of us - suicide. R U OK is a wonderful and inspiring idea and has helped to open the conversation, but we need to talk even more about suicide. It is tough isn’t it? We W don’t want to think about suicide let alone talk about it, but we need to! One sad reality of suicide is that we can, seemingly ask all the right questions “Are you OK?”, “Is everything alright?”, “Can I do anything?” Do we really listen to the answer and do we take the time to watch for subtle changes in behaviour. r r. Suicide has impacted on my family twice. Tw T o nephews, brothers, one in his early fifties, one in his early forties who took their own lives just twelve months apart. It is impossible to comprehend the “why”. I do know that we need to take more time for those that we care about. We W need to watch for changes in behaviour but more importantly, we must never play the “blame game”. it is so easy to blame ourselves, family, the victim. Suicide is a choice, a sad, tragic choice. SPORT Coach flags new era for Woodend-Hesket New Woodend-Hesket coach Tom Carland says it’s the club’s talented young list which attracted him to the Riddell District Football League club. Carland comes to the Hawks after four years as playing-coach at Birchip-Watchem. He played his junior and early senior football with Aberfeldie. He said the challenge of bringing the club’s junior results through to the senior ranks was what excited him about the role. “It’s a new challenge and a new chapter,” he said. “There’s been success through the junior program and we want to bring that success through to the senior program. “We’ll tinker a few things and try and lift the professionalism to another level. “We want to get them motivated and

enjoying training and give the side a shot at playing finals.” At just 27, Carland will be a player-coach and will add to the Hawks’ midfield stocks. In his four years at Birchip-Watchem, he took the side that won the wooden spoon the season before he got there to a grand final last month. They played finals every year Carland was in charge. He said he wants to bring what he learnt in those four years to the Hawks. “Birchip is a small country town of 600 people and quite unique,” he said. “The footy club is at the forefront of everything in the town and I want to bring some of that to Woodend. “Birchip relies on recruiting players to keep building.” Carland said that looking at the list they had

a good group of local talent and they would recruit a few more players to strengthen the side. The Hawks finished ninth with four wins this year. “We’ve got some recruiting ideas and strategies,” he said. If people say no, then it’s on to plan B, C, and D. “The spine looks good on paper. We need a couple of outside mids and a back-up ruckman.” As well as adding more depth, something the Hawks have been missing recently, Carland also wants to reduce the amount of injuries. “If you set up a training model to get away from soft tissue injuries, you can improve the fitness of the players and reduce the amount of injuries,” he said. Knights classic a winner By Tara Murray The diamonds were full to the brim on Saturday, as the Sherwood Knights hosted the Makayla Classic softball tournament. The tournament, which raises funds to help fight and raise awareness of cystic fibrosis, has been run by the Sunbury-based club since 2011. Knights president John Kenny is the brains behind the event, which is named after his god-daughter Makayla, who has the disease. “We didn’t know much about CF until she was diagnosed,” he said. “We decided we wanted to hold a tournament and raise funds and awareness. “We get the younger kids involved and get Sunbury kids to umpire some really good players without the pressure.” Five teams participated this year – a Sherwood Knights side, the Victorian under-19 and under-17 teams, Springvale Whitesox and Laverton. Makayla was in attendance and presented the trophy to the winning team. Kenny said that every year teams wanted to be involved in the day. “With the Victorian teams, they like to give the players some experience of live play,” he said. “We have a close relationship with Laverton and they always want to be involved. “Springvale does a lot of development with their kids, so it’s good to have them involved.” Several Victorian players and top-level umpires were in attendance on Saturday to give some advice and support. The event also acted as a season starter for the Knights, who will again play in the Sunbury Softball Association, with the season beginning on October 14. The Knights are looking to continue the success from last season, when they won the mixed under-13 and under-17 competitions, as well as those for men and women. They’re looking to field teams in all those age groups again, as well as under-15 teams. Russell Coleman said the Knights wanted to add the extra age group so there wasn’t such a big jump going from under-13s to under-17s. He said they were still looking for players from all age groups. Big field at badminton The Sunbury Ladies Badminton Club’s annual tournament attracted a strong turn-out. More than 50 players from Sunbury, Werribee, Geelong, Macedon Ranges and surrounding areas participated in last month’s event. Competition was held across seven courts, with winners awarded for each court. Five of the seven winners came from the home club. Bronwyn Pokorzynski was the winner on court one, Marissa Goudie on court three, Vicky Franks won on court four, Siobhan McGrory on court five and Norma Scoble was the winner on court six. Geelong Badminton Club’s Donne Nowlan was the winner on court two, while Macedon Badminton Club’s Wendy Hallinan claimed victory on court seven. Following the competition, all players enjoyed lunch and conversation. Local businesses got behind the event, donating goods for raffles. Sunbury Ladies Badminton Club is looking for new players for social and competition badminton on Monday and Thursday mornings from 9.45am, with the first session free. Cats coach steps down Premiership coach Jeff Andrews leaves Macedon Football Club on a high after announcing he is stepping down. Andrews has coached the Riddell District Football League club in two stints, and said a couple of factors helped him make the decision. He told Cats president Terry Kernan a while ago he wasn’t going to continue. “Five years is long enough,” he said. “I’m looking at a change in career and don’t know time-wise whether I’ll have the time. Given these things, it’s time I move on. “I’m not planning on coaching another club.” Andrews coached the club 20 years ago without success, and he’s proud his second stint culminated in a premiership. “We’ve gone from 10th to sixth then fourth and now first,” he said. “We’ve tried to build the foundations and still have at least 60 per cent local flavour in the team.” Andrews said he was happy with where he’s leaving the club. “We had nine or 10 kids make their debuts and another three or four would have if the season kept going,” he said. “[And] The players we’ve recruited are blokes who love their footy.” 23 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 26, 2017

Joy for fast-start Lions By Tara Murray The Sunbury Lions’ top side has lived up to expectations by delivering the club its first Ballarat Netball League A-grade premiership since 2013. As early season favourites, the Lions quickly become the hunted. But a draw against Redan would be the only blemish during the regular season, as they finished four games clear on top of the ladder. The Lions were challenged during the finals, when a poor game against North Ballarat City ended with a loss that meant they needed to make the grand final the hard way. When they accomplished that, it set up another clash with City – this time in the grand final. There wouldn’t be a second upset between the two teams, with the Lions winning 44-38 on Sunday. Lions coach Adam Boldiston was ecstatic after the game. He coached the Lions in 2015 when they finished runners-up to North Ballarat City. Three players from that team were part of this year’s side. “I’m elated,” he said. “We worked really hard. We’ve been the form team, but we’ve really been challenged as well. I thought we weathered the storm.” In the grand final, the Lions flew out of the blocks in less then ideal netballing conditions. A strong wind played havoc with passes and shots all day and at times caused dust storms. The Lions led 17-5 at quarter-time, with Boldiston saying the scoreline was a statement of intent following the loss the last time the teams met. “We’re all about getting away to that good start and today they were really switched on,” he said. “The loss the other week really hurt them and they were out to make a real statement today. “That first quarter was amazing, but I knew North would come back.” Boldiston wasn’t wrong, with City closing the gap to four goals late in the second quarter. While the Lions looked dominant in the first quarter, in the second they weren’t able to get their hands on the ball and City was capitalising on turnovers.

The Lions held a six-goal lead at half-time, but had a real game on their hands. “We came out of the blocks amazing today, but when you do that you’re always at risk of having a bit of a lull,” Boldiston said. “There’s always a scoring end and there definitely was one today. We had a little bit of a lapse, but we were able to get it back. “It was important to have that lead. Going into the last, I think we were about seven up.” The third and fourth quarters were topsy-turvy affairs, the Lions building a decent margin before City would come back at them. The closest City would get was three goals. Chloe Curran was named best on court by the umpires. She shot 36 goals from 48 attempts. Boldiston said Curran had done a massive amount of work every week. “In the first quarter she was dominant and I was impressed,” he said. “The conditions were atrocious for the shooters – I felt sorry for them.

“She nailed some pressure shots for us late. We tried to attack a certain side of the post, as it was easier to shoot one side than the other. She stood up.” Boldiston said that while Curran was named best on court, every player stepped up when they needed to. “There was some really steadying play in the middle by Tarryn Munro,” he said. “Loz Gilcrist picked up a couple of crucial intercepts. “Elly Randall came on and did her job in the last quarter and provided a little bit of a stop there, which was needed. “Ruth Smith freed up Chloe and had a really good game – a solid four quarters today.” While the Sunbury Lions’ A-grade side came away with premiership glory, there was heartbreak for their three other grand final sides. It took Lauren Gilcrist 15 years to win one premiership with the Sunbury Lions, now she’s a five-time premiership player. On Saturday, Gilcrist played a vital role in helping the Lions win the A-grade premiership against North Ballarat City, their first since 2013. Gilcrist was part of that 2013 team and then played in B-grade premierships in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Gilcrist said this premiership was special. “It’s pretty amazing,” she said. “In 2013 it was the first one I’d ever won after playing for such a long time. “To have this come round again with a great bunch of girls, it’s amazing we’ve been able to do it again. “Every year the league is getting stronger and stronger. Five in a row, they might think I’m the lucky charm or something.” Having stepped down to B-grade the past few years, Gilcrist was happy to continue in that grade, before a conversation in the off season with coach Adam Boldiston. Boldiston told her he had her in his plans for the A-grade side if she was prepared to take on the challenge. “I sort of thought after moving down to B-grade over the last few years that I was starting to make my way down and out as I got older. “Then to be invited and pushed up … they wanted me to be a part of this team. “This team especially has welcomed me and taught me a lot even though I’m so much older than them. “They’ve been teaching me week after week so much more, it’s very special, I’m not just a bench player but a key player.” Gilcrist didn’t look out of place in the grand final and had a couple of key intercepts late in the game. Gilcrist said it was about putting everything you’ve got out on the court. This year’s premiership comes 20 years after the Lions fielded their first netball team in the Ballarat Football Netball League. Gilcrist was part of that first team. “What’s sweetest for me is in 1997 we brought a netball team to the BFL and I was only 16 and I was part of that. “So this is a 20-year reunion of that and it meant a lot. There was some tears when we finally finished it.” Gilcrist said she would let things settle before deciding on her netballing future. She said she was considering retiring, but has one good reason to keep going. “My daughter is 10 now and she keeps saying I have to keep playing until we play together, so that’s probably a bucket list item. We’ll see if the body holds out.” Tara Murray

The night started well for the Lions, with three players among the four winners of the inaugural Club 18 division’s best and fairest award. The good night continued for the Lions, who won the Merv and Mary Howard Memorial Senior Club Championship, which is based on points allocated for wins across all netball and football grades. Super Sunbury gets its reward By Tara Murray The Sunbury Lions’ dominant netball season was well recognised at the Ballarat Netball League best and fairest awards night. The Lions, who had four teams in Saturday’s grand finals, had five players win individual awards, won coach of the year and had four players named in the team of the year. Defender Ashleigh Hardy shared the top netball award, the Sally McLean Trophy, for the best player in A grade as voted by the umpires. Hardy and Redan’s Ruby Parry shared the award on 19 votes. Another Lion, Tarryn Munro, finished equal third on 16. Hardy, who is in her first year with the Lions, said she was honoured to share the award. She started the year really well, polling 12 votes in the first five rounds, before polling just four votes for the next 12 rounds. Three votes in the final round meant Hardy joined Parry at the top of the leaderboard. Hardy said she didn’t think she’d done enough in the final round to join Parry at the top. “We got off to a really good start to the season,”

she said. “A lot of us have not played together for a while and I think it took a while to get going and once we got everything going, then the team settled.” Hardy said she had loved her time at the Lions. “It has been so good to have four teams in the finals – it just shows the depth we have,” she said. Lions shooter Chloe Curran won the A-grade most valuable player award, voted on by the coaches. Hardy finished a vote further back Hardy, Curran, Munro and Monique Clark were all named in the A-grade team of the year. Adam Boldiston, who coaches the Lions’ A and B-grade teams, was named coach of the year. The Lions won both the B-grade awards. Suzi Johnson was the runaway winner in the best-and-fairest award, finishing on 35 votes, 11 clear of the next best. Her teammate, Amanda Cusack, won the MVP award. Ashleigh Danckert won the D-grade best and fairest award, finishing seven votes clear. Lisa Romanski finished in third place and was equal runner-up in the MVP award.

AT A GLANCE

If cars were creatures, the Mazda CX-3 would be a lady beetle, with distinct shape and standout colouring, buzzing around lush green meadows or summer gardens in full bloom. However, forget the bucolic backdrop – this pretty little sports utility vehicle is most at home in bustling urban centres. So much so it has become a market leader since it first came to Australia in March, 2015. Following in the tracks of the Mazda2 light car, addition of i-Activsense safety technology makes the latest CX-3 update the first vehicle in the small SUV segment to offer smart city brake support forward and reverse as standard equipment across the range of Neo, Maxx, sTouring and Akari models. Further safety inclusions are blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert as standard on the Maxx, while sTouring and Akari variants also get driver attention alert and traffic sign recognition. Power comes courtesy of a 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol or a 1.5-litre Skyactiv-D diesel engine mated with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with a choice of front or all-wheel drive. Prices start at $20,490, plus on-road costs, for the petrol Neo. The test vehicle was a 2.0-litre petrol Maxx automatic AWD, which comes to market at $26,890. Based on Mazda2 hatchback underpinnings, the CX-3 holds firm to the maker’s Kodo Soul of Motion styling, with the body flowing from a sturdy front, through a sleek centre section to a robust rear end. Headlight layouts vary from model to model, with the test Maxx favouring a layout that puts the turn signals outside the main headlamp unit to create a narrow, sharp design.

Cosy but not cramped is the best way to describe the CX-3 cabin, an opinion enforced by the limited views outside from a short ration of glass all round. Boot space, at 264 litres, is also limited, although, with rear seat backs folded, expands to a usable 1174 litres. The new steering wheel is a direct lift from big brother CX-9, with three levels of switches from the previous model being integrated into one level to match the way fingers move.

someone suddenly appearing at an intersection or from behind parallel-parked vehicles while driving at speeds of approximately 10km/h or more, while rear bumper-mounted ultrasonic sensors help mitigate collision damage when reversing. Fuel consumption hovers about 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/ highway cycle, according to Mazda. The test all-wheel-drive vehicle came up with figures of eight litres per 100 kilometres in town and 5.3 on the motorway. The not-so-sophisticated suspension lets the driver know when the car hits a bump … every bump. Apart from that, everything went smoothly with the Maxx, including parking in tight spots. The CX-3 has been the segment’s best seller going on for almost two years, and despite any shortcomings, without any deep insight into how buyers choose vehicles, I can’t see the upgraded version losing much ground in the near future.
