Cats end 40-year drought Macedon Football Club’s premiership drought is over, with the Cats claiming the Riddell District Football League flag on Sunday afternoon. Playing in their first grand final since 1978, the Cats found an extra level in the second half to seal the 11.14 (40)-10.7 (67) win against Rupertswood. Hume tackles pokies Hume council has begun a major push for gaming machine reform, after it was revealed pokies swallowed more than $100 million within the municipality last year. The council is pushing for a number of changes to state legislation, including incentives for pokies venues to remove their machines and poker machine redesign, such as limiting maximum bets to $1 as the Productivity Commission recommends. The council will ask the Municipal
Association of Victoria’s state council to call on the Victorian Parliament to legislate for policy reform at the association’s state council meeting next month. Reducing pokies venue opening hours from the current 20 hours a day will also be part of the council’s request. The push by the council was discussed at last week’s council meeting, following a suggestion from the Alliance for Gambling Reform. Council acting director planning and development Michael Sharp said the council was addressing the impacts of gambling after
Hume had the sixth highest level of gaming expenditure in the state last year. “Any future increase of gaming machines and more losses will put added pressure and strain on our residents who are already experiencing hardship,” Mr Sharp said. “Research shows that for every one problem gambler, there are potentially seven people who are adversely affected.” Poker machines at Hume’s 14 gaming venues collected $105,766,409.57 in the year to June 30. Five of those venues are in Sunbury, which accounted for $18,582,731 of the poker

Gisborne schools growth watch By Serena Seyfort The ability of Gisborne state schools to deal with a growing population is under review. The state government and Macedon Ranges council have confirmed that investigating the schooling situation in Gisborne is on their agendas. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said she would be hosting Education Minister James Merlino when he visited the Macedon Ranges in coming months to discuss Gisborne schools. She said she was “keenly aware of the
significant number of students attending schools in Gisborne every day”. “The demand on enrolments at these schools is a tribute to the excellent teaching and learning that takes place in all of them,” Ms Thomas said. Macedon Ranges council said discussing schooling with the state government was important. Council acting chief executive officer Sophie Segafredo said that as the town’s population grew, it was essential its schools kept up with demand. “We will be talking with the Victorian government about the provision of local services
and infrastructure, including school facilities, as part of the town structure plan review that’s planned for Gisborne in this current financial year,” she said. Gisborne currently has three government schools – Gisborne and New Gisborne primary schools and Gisborne Secondary College. Gisborne Secondary College principal Andrew Robertson said that four years ago, the school had 985 students. Next year there would be “well over 1100” students enrolled. Mr Robertson said the school could cope with about 1200 students without requiring new buildings.
He said “very few” classes contained more than 25 students and the average year 12 class had 18 students. Gisborne South resident of 35 years Debra Werrett has been campaigning for a new school in Gisborne. “Gisborne is expanding rapidly, both south of the town between Willowbank and Brooking roads, and north with a large area of land opposite the New Gisborne Primary school set aside for further subdivision,” she said. Mrs Werrett said she was concerned children’s education would suffer if class numbers had to operate above capacity.
Juniors kick off giving spree As the season nears an end, Macedon Junior Football Netball Club has given back to the community. The club’s co-presidents presented the captains of both the Macedon and Mount Macedon CFA brigades each with a $500 cheque on Sunday. Macedon Junior Football Netball Club co-president Craig Thorburn said the club went through some changes this year. “We wanted to revitalise our sponsorship and re-energise our commitment to the local community,” Mr Thorburn said. “We’ve always envisaged that part of our sponsorship money would go to a local cause.” The club is sponsored entirely by local businesses. Mr Thorburn said the CFA donation was an important move for the club, which helped it to reconnect with the community and thank the local volunteers. “We want to recognise the worth of our local fire brigades, given that they protect us,” he said. In July, the junior club hosted a community event that included former North Melbourne and Sydney AFL player Wayne Schwass as guest speaker. Schwass shared his battle with mental illness, how he overcame his demons, and spoke about ways in which community members can assist others during challenging times.
Sister act jumps to it Three sisters from Sunbury are eagerly preparing to compete in the Australian All Star Cheer and Dance State Championships this weekend. Alanna, 15, Lexie, 11, and Mckenzie Romeijn, 7, train together every week at Signature Cheer and Dance in New Gisborne. Alanna said they had been doing extra practise ahead of the state competition. “I’m actually so excited about it,” she said. Alanna and Lexie will compete in a stunt team that has taken out first prize in all other competitions it has entered this year. Alanna says she’s been passionate about cheering and dancing for years. She’s also had success in the modelling world – in February she won the title of Miss Petite Victoria, granting her entry to the Miss Fashion Week Australia competition in October. The teen has also won entry to the Follow Your Dreams National Dance Championship to be held in January. She says dance is her greatest passion, and heading into her VCE it is going to become her main focus. On top of competing, Alanna is also working towards gaining her dance teacher’s licence.

Pet peeves on the rise in Hume By Laura Michell Complaints to Hume council about nuisance cats and dogs have surged by 33 per cent in the past three years, new data reveals. Latest data from the council’s draft animal management plan reveal that 3333 complaints were made in 2016-17, up from 2493 in 2013-14. Calls requesting the collection of stray and feral cats and requests for cat traps account for half of all animal nuisance complaints made to the council. Complaints about contained and wandering dogs account for 48 per cent of the calls.
The data comes as the council prepared to release its draft animal management plan for public consultation. The draft plan, which was adopted last week, aims to reduce the amount of nuisance cats in the community and increase animal registration rates and the number of impounded dogs being returned to their owners. The council will also explore opportunities to partner with surrounding councils to create a regional animal shelter. A report to council recommended that it expands its cat trapping program and investigates introducing a cat curfew in a bid
to reduce complaints about nuisance cats and promote responsible pet ownership. The report stated that 1962 cats were impounded in Hume in 2016-17, 75 per cent of which were euthanized after being declared wild, uncontrollable or diseased and without identification. “The majority of cats impounded in Hume are feral and unowned, therefore there is no possibility or reclaiming or rehoming,” the report stated. “Of the cats impounded that are not feral, the majority are not registered or identifiable, and are not reclaimed by owners.”
The draft plan also recommends that the council consider switching to lifetime registration tags from annual tags and invite local vets and shelters to become registration agents for the council. “Registration of dogs and cats has increased in Hume over the last thee years, however it is estimated that there may be as many as 7600 unregistered dogs in the municipality,” the report stated. The draft animal management plan will be available for public consultation until Friday, October 6. Details: www.hume.vic.gov.au
It’s puppy love for Bella There’s no doubt the average pet owner in Hume is a dog-person. In the year to June 30, 18,562 pups were registered with Hume council, compared to the 6497 cats recorded. Jack Russell terriers have triumphed as the city’s most popular dog breed, and the names Bella and Max are the top picks for female and male pooches. Sunbury resident Julie Monkman adores her eight-year-old Jack Russell, Bella. “She’s got a lot of personality and she’s such a happy little dog,” Ms Monkman said. Bella is the Monkman family’s second Jack Russell. Ms Monkman said she thought the breed was popular because they’re easy to look after and have “a lot of spunk”. The family got Bella locally, and gave her the name because they thought she was so
beautiful – Bella meaning “beautiful” in Italian. “I know a lot of dogs that are Bellas,” Ms Monkman said. “But I didn’t realise how common the name was at the time.” Serena Seyfort

Trains on track for punctuality By Serena Seyfort Commuters who take the train in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges might have noticed an improvement in the services last month. In the month of August both V/Line and Metro trains took a step up with their reliability and punctuality compared to previous months, and increased the number of services. V/Line delivered 98.4 per cent of Bendigo’s scheduled services – the most it has all year, exceeding the yearly average of 97 per cent. The number of Bendigo trains that were on time was also the highest all winter, at 86 per cent, compared to the yearly average of 84.7 per cent. Malmsbury, Macedon, Riddells Creek and Clarkefield stations gained 27 new train services as of August 27, including nine extra services on the weekend, which increased the frequency of daytime weekend trains from about 90 to 60 minutes. Across the tracks on Sunbury’s Metro line, 10 new weekly peak services were also added to the Sunbury timetable from August 27. The number of scheduled trains that were delivered reached 99 per cent, up from July’s 97.7 per cent. But while the number of trains that were on time improved to 89.6 per cent, up from July’s 88.7 per cent, the line’s overall punctuality has declined. The yearly average is 90.7 per cent, and this time last year commuters were experiencing 92.4 per cent of trains on time. Last week the state government granted Metro a new contract to continue to operate the metropolitan rail network for another seven years.
Spring marked by sands of time Romsey’s Sand Art Gallery is welcoming spring to the Macedon Ranges. Sculptor of 15 years and gallery co-owner Leo Vamvalis has been busy crafting sand sculptures of daffodils. Fellow co-owner Rosie Gallicchio said the duo had been inspired by nature. “Daffodils are popping up everywhere … and they’re so beautiful – so we wanted to create them in the sand,” Ms Gallicchio said. The sand daffodils will be around as long as the weather permits. “Like all good daffodils, they die off,” Rosie said with a laugh. Sand Art Gallery is open seven days a week from 10.30am-5pm. A Kyneton motorcyclist was caught allegedly drink driving in Carlsruhe last week. Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol detected the motorcycle travelling at 142km/h in a 100km/h zone on Cobb and Co Road about 6.40am on September 11. The 54-year-old male rider allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.123 per cent at the police station. His licence was suspended and his bike was impounded at a cost of $1225. The man is expected to be charged on summons for speeding and drink driving.

Sunbury residents will light up the night on Saturday in support of those diagnosed with blood cancer, and their families. Sunbury’s Rhonda Shuffell will be carrying a lantern in the Leukaemia Foundation walk in memory of her friend’s father, who died of leukaemia. Ms Shuffell wasn’t aware her friend Kerry Brooks had lost dad, Bruce, to the illness when she decided to begin fundraising for the cause. “You never know who’s been affected – that’s the whole point of getting involved,” Ms Shuffell said. So far she has raised $360 for the Leukaemia Foundation, exceeding her initial goal of $150.
Ms Shuffell hopes to encourage others to join her. “I’ll be dressed in blue and will be a holding a gold lantern in memory of Bruce.” The Leukaemia Foundation’s Light the Night fundraiser is held at more than 100 locations across Australia. Sunbury’s event will take place at Sunbury Social Club Clarke Oval on Saturday, September 23, from 6pm. Sunbury is hitting home-runs in the softball world. Indeed, a quarter of the state’s 12 years and under boys softball team chosen to compete at the Pacific School Games in December will be made up of Sunbury residents. Salesian College student Lachlan Caplin, Killara Primary School pupil Matthew Bedwell and Braemar College student Tyler Whorlow-Kenny have all been selected to represent Victoria at the competition. The boys are training every week in Waverley in preparation for the competition in Adelaide. It’s the second time that Lachlan has made it into the team. He said he was very excited and proud to represent Victoria. “It’s feeling a bit surreal that we get to play against so many different teams as well as see the other sports, including international competitors,” Lachlan said. My wife and I previously lived in Westmeadows and we looked all around for somewhere to move to. When we took a drive through Diggers Rest, we thought: “That looks like a sleepy little town” … we wanted to have a lot of land because we are both gardeners.

I’ve lived in Diggers Rest for the past 17 years.
My wife and I are keen gardeners – although I am more the labourer than anything else. I was the inaugural president of the Broadmeadows and District Gardening Club and have been a member for the past 36 years. We also have a passion for community radio. Both of us have been executive members of Northwest FM (based in Glenroy). I am also the president. We love travelling, as well.
Tell me about your how you became involved with the Diggers Rest Residents Association (DRRA)? I became involved very early when there was a residents’ protest about a proposed caravan park. I’ve always been a person very close to residents’ concerns, having been in local government for 31 years. I became a member of the DRRA after the objection to the caravan park, and later became the president for the first time in 2006 and have been ever since. Where did you serve in local government? I spent three and a half years in local government at Swan Hill and another 27 and a half years in what was then the City of Broadmeadows, later to become City of Hume. What are residents’ main concerns in Diggers Rest? We’ve got a lot of issues in Diggers Rest. When we first moved into the area, there
What would people be surprised to know about you? A lot of people don’t know that I had military service. I spent six years in the Royal Australian Survey Corps. For a short time in Duntroon, I saw a lot of Vietnam from 12,000 feet. What is the best thing about Diggers Rest? It is a town removed from the larger centres, but accessible enough to them. It is quiet and convenient to the freeway.

SPORT Lions dominate finals with four teams in the running Sunbury Lions will be out in force at Saturday’s Ballarat Netball League grand final day. Having already had two teams, C and D grade, qualify for the grand finals, the Lions’ A and B grade teams joined the party on Saturday with strong wins in the preliminary finals. It means only their under-19s, which didn’t play finals, won’t be in the grand final. Head coach Adam Boldiston said it was a huge achievement for the club. “We’re building strength in our squad and we’ve shown a bit more depth,” he said. “I’ve tried to impart as much knowledge as I can through all five teams. Even our under-19s which has always struggled a bit, won three or
four games and had marked improvement this year.” On Saturday, in the preliminary final against Redan, the A-grade team had a point to prove, coming off its first loss for the season against North Ballarat City. The Lions meant business early on and managed to build, winning 48-34 “We got off to a good start and managed to win all four quarters. It’s been a while since we did that against one of the top sides,” Boldiston said. “We still had some lapses, but it was a lot better than last week.” Boldiston said the improvement came from across the whole court. Chloe Curran (33
goals) and Ruth Smith (15 goals) both shot at 79 per cent apiece. Defenders Ashleigh Hardy and Monique Clark were named the Lions’ best. Boldiston said the A-grade side, which again faces North Ballarat City in the grand final, is really switched on. “The girls wanted to win this week,” he said. “They weren’t happy with their performance last week and it didn’t sit well with them. “There’s lots of excitement around the club and hopefully we can come home with the wins.” The B-grade side, which is going for a fourth straight premiership, had to come from behind after a slow start. Once in front, it held on to the
lead, winning, 59-50. Boldiston said it had to work hard for the win. “Ballarat were two goals in front at quarter-time. We then kicked into gear and started attacking a lot better. “Amanda Cusack shot 49 goals, which is a huge volume for her. It’s because of the good service into the circle she had the opportunities.” The B-grade side will play Lake Wendouree in the grand final for a third year. Grand end to heroic year By Tara Murray Sunbury Kangaroos capped off a stunning Riddell District Football League reserves finals series with the most important victory of all, a grand final win. While nothing separated the top-four teams all season, with just six losses between them, the Kangaroos found another level come finals. They easily accounted for Melton Centrals and they demolished Rupertswood in the semi-final before another big win against Diggers Rest in the preliminary. Those performances put the Kangaroos into their fourth-straight grand final, this time against Wallan. Kangaroos’ coach Matt Pettman said his side played an unbelievable finals series against some powerful teams. “For the top two to lose one game each and third and fourth to lose two games it was so close,” he said. “We played Rupo and were undermanned when we played them and [against] Wallan we lost by 13 points, it could have been anyone’s premiership.
“We knew they [Wallan] would be hard to beat, they were on top and favourites for a reason.” Despite underdog status, the Kangaroos kicked eight of the first 10 goals on Saturday and led by 40 points midway through the third quarter. The Magpies got going and reduced the margin to 35 points at three quarter-time. When they kicked the first two goals of the last quarter, the margin was back to 23 points. However, the Kangaroos’ experience showed through and they settled, kicking two goals of their own to seal the result. Pettman said they had done enough before the Magpies made their run and the Kangaroos won 11.17 (83)-8.11 (59). “We had to stick to our structures and game plan that got us to that position and eventually I knew we’d finish on top,” he said. “With this group of guys there’s a good bunch of older, younger and different [playing] levels. When they were coming back, Matty Baird, Wally [Matthew Wallace], Walkes [Luke Walker] put themselves behind the ball and tried to stem it.
“I’m so rapt and so proud.” Curtis Schultz kicked five goals for a second straight game. He was the Kangaroos only multiple goal scorer. Josh Kanellos added the grand final best on ground medal to the league reserves best and fairest award he won a couple of weeks ago. Schultz, Mark McInerney and Dwayne Tate were the Kangaroos’ other standouts. Pettman said the victory makes slight amends for last season when they fell at the final hurdle. “I’ve been here for three years,” he said. “I was Wayne’s assistant and we won it. I had this drive last year to coach on my own and to get the boys into the granny was unbelievable. “To be last year runners-up and to see what we’ve done this year to be fighting and coming back and have a chance at it, is unbelievable.” Pettman said they were keen to keep the streak going. “I’ve never won back-to-back premierships as a player or a coach and I’m keen to come back and defend it.” More pictures at www.starweekly.com.au

The Sharks, among the powerhouses of the competition for the past five years, claimed the under-19, C-grade and B-grade premierships. The three games unfolded differently, but all had the same result. The under-19 team had to come from behind against Macedon to claim its fourth straight premiership. The Sharks hit the lead for the first time in the dying minutes, eventually winning 27-25. Georgia Hellyer was awarded the best-on-court medal. The premiership means the Sharks remain undefeated in the four years of the league’s under-19 competition. The C-grade side made it back-to-back flags with victory against Diggers Rest. The Sharks controlled the game from start to finish, winning 23-19. Hannah Keane, who was one of the Sharks’ best in the under-19 win, backed it up and was named best on court in the C-grade win. The Sharks’ B-grade side had a mixed game, eventually out-running Diggers Rest for a 32-24 victory. The Sharks’ experience showed through in the final quarter as they shot away for the win. Gisborne falls in BNL final Gisborne’s season is over in the Bendigo Netball League, falling just short of a grand final spot. The Bulldogs were left to rue lapses in the first and third quarters against Golden Square in Saturday’s preliminary final. Golden Square got out to an early lead, before the Bulldogs fought back but Golden Square opened up another lead. The Bulldogs weren’t able to close the gap in the final quarter, losing 53-50. Golden Square will now take on Sandhurst in the grand final. Tara Murray

Lancefield shakes off grand final disappointment

Lancefield has vowed to return better and stronger after falling short in the Riddell District Netball League A-grade grand final. Playing in their first A-grade grand final since 2004, the Tigers started slowly against Romsey and never recovered, losing 56-40. The Tigers were seven goals down at the last break and couldn’t recover, the Redbacks blowing out their lead to 16 goals at the final whistle. Tigers coach Alan Watson said they were clearly beaten by a better team. The Redbacks had over-run them two weeks earlier in the semi-finals, by 14 goals. “We had a crack and we scared the hell out of them in the third quarter which was good,” he said. “We had a good year and I’m not overly worried by it. We had a go and didn’t leave anything out there and that’s all you can ask for. “Romsey deserved the win, they were the better team on the day.”
The Tigers hopes of ending their premiership drought suffered a setback before the game, as Maddi Gay hurt her shoulder playing football. It meant she couldn’t take to the court, leaving the Tigers with eight players to pick from. Once the game started, Watson knew they would have to play good netball for four quarters, unfortunately it wasn’t to be. “That was the thing we were worried about, being able to play consistently for the entire game. “In that first quarter they were five up in a blink of an eye lid. We were playing catch-up netball from then, we stuck with them for the majority of the game and again they got away late, that’s the way it goes.” The Tigers fought it out to the end, which was clear when Tigers captain Paula Broadstock returned to the court after dislocating her finger early in the last quarter.
She had wanted to play on after having the finger put back in, but had to spend time on the bench after calling an injury time-out. Watson said Broadstock led by example. “She’s our captain for a reason and she kept mentioning ‘I’m right to go, I’m right to go,’ she was really keen to get out there. “She showed enormous courage.” Tahnysha Salanoa, who shot 28 goals, was named the Tigers best player. Taylah Watson and Broadstock were also named in the best. Watson said they had already started planning for next season. “We’ve got a couple of players in mind for next year,” he said. “Part of our problem was we only had eight on the bench. We’ll get some more players and the ones I’ve got in mind will make us stronger, bigger and better next year.” Tara Murray
Redbacks flag a brilliant year By Tara Murray Romsey showed why it was the team to beat all season with a brilliant performance to claim the Riddell District Netball League A-grade premiership. Seen as pre-season favourites, even before they added Australian Netball League shooter Milly Brock, the Redbacks were a force all season. After losing just a single game in the regular season, they had poor patches in their first two finals, but also showed some brilliance to get back into those games and win. On Sunday, they produced their most complete performance of the finals series, beating Lancefield 56-40. Redbacks coach Lena Way knew the start to the grand final was vital, after her players started poorly in the previous two finals. With two weeks between games, that was made a big focus and the Redbacks responded to have a 16-9 quarter-time lead. “That was definitely our intention – to start calmly and with composure,” Way said. “We said we had to have patience in the attack end and pass the ball around the circle to feed at the right time … we had to do all those simple things well. I think we did that.” A key to that strategy was Chelsea Ross. Not afraid to let the goal shooter do most of the shooting, Ross forced the Tigers’ defenders to pay more attention to her. She shot 23 goals for the match, missing just one. “She knew she had a job to do and that was to sweep in and draw out the defender from Milly Brock,” Way said. “Then either she was the front option or there was a one-on-one feed to Milly over the back. “She did her job extremely well – I couldn’t take her off.” With the first step of the plan achieved, the Redbacks set about maintaining their lead, extending it to 10 goals at the main break. The Tigers hit back in the third quarter, getting on a small run to reduce the margin to six goals – but that was as close as they got. The Redbacks stormed home with a 15-6 final quarter. Way changed the defence plan three times during the game to keep the Tiger attackers on the edge. It was a tactic that paid off late in the match. “It was just about trying to shut down their goalers, and I think that really worked,” Way said “Sarah [Szczykulski] played off the player, took a number of intercepts and sealed the day.” Way said she was very proud, especially considering where the club had come from in the past two years. When Way took over as coach at the start of 2016, the netball program had all but collapsed. Way said she won’t be coaching on next season.

“What I walked into February, 2016, wasn’t great,” she said. “Hope [Evans] had already signed with another club and we managed to get her back … it was the beginning of building the foundations back up. “I’m thrilled with the season. We only lost one game for the year, but I think it started with a very strong pre-season. “I said to the girls all year, the premiership is in your hands – you just have to do the simple things well and stick to the game plan.” Mid-courter Cayley Armstrong was awarded the best on court medal. That was quite a contrast from 12 months before, when she didn’t get court time in Riddell’s premiership. Way said Armstrong had struggled with injury throughout the season, but things had come together for her at the right time. She said Armstrong’s consistency hitting up the middle, with her leads and drives, and her ability to work the ball into the ring were stand-out elements of Armstrong’s game. “I said to her, what a turnaround in two years,” Way said.

Rupertswood’s best not good enough in gallant final

Rupertswood’s first senior Riddell District Football League grand final ended in heartache, after the team fell short against Macedon. Having built as the finals series progressed, the Sharks entered the match confident they could at least mix it with the Cats, who went into Sunday’s match as favourites. The Sharks pushed them all day and every time the Cats looked like getting away, they reeled them in to keep the contest close. Unfortunately, the Sharks couldn’t find the late goals they needed, losing 11.14 (80)-10.7 (67). Sharks coach Kevin Fitzgerald said sometimes playing good football wasn’t enough at the end of the day. “I was really proud of our boys and I thought they worked exceptionally hard,” he said. “I thought they deserved it and there has to be a winner and loser in every contest, unfortunately we were the loser today. I thought Macedon were good but I thought we were good too. “I can’t fault our boys, they’ve come a long way since I’ve been at Rupo. Hopefully we’ve
earnt a little bit of respect and can build on that the next few years.” The Sharks started the day with a big win, as ruckman Dean Putt was declared fit to play after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in the qualifying final. Once on the field, the Sharks started slowly before their best period of the game in the second quarter when they kicked five goals in a row. Fitzgerald said the half-time siren came at the wrong time for them. “You have periods when you’re on top, periods when you’re not,” he said. “Half-time came at a bad time for us as I thought we had them under control and started to score. “It would have been nice to go another five minutes.” The Cats took control of the game in the second half and despite some hard contested football from the Sharks they couldn’t find the goals they required. In the end the Cats had too many players that could stand up when needed. Fitzgerald said despite the loss they would
take a lot out of this season and would be better for it the next couple of years. “You’re looking at a list of local boys. If you took Chambo [Brett Chambers] out of it, the average age would be 21. “We had 10 debutantes and 42 players throughout the year. “I’m proud of our boys.” The game was Fitzgerald’s last as coach of the side after two years in charge. Assistant coach Nick Ash has been appointed coach. “They came to me 10 weeks ago, asking what are your intentions for next year,” Fitzgerald said. “I said if we win the flag I’m walking away, if we don’t win the flag I would like the opportunity to coach next year. “They decided not to take that option. I’ve sat on it for 10 weeks and I’m filthy on the decision. “I’ve had the toughest 10 weeks of my coaching career.” It was a tough day all round for the Sharks as their under-18.5s lost to Wallan. Cats relish a tough flag victory By Tara Murray Macedon Football Club is the toast of the Riddell District Football League after winning its first premiership in more than 40 years. It’s been a tough journey for the Cats since their last premiership in 1976, including going into recess for three seasons in the 2000s. The Cats and the local community that fought to get their football club back up and kicking goals got to see the rewards on Sunday afternoon. The Cats had been the best side all season, but that mattered little when they faced Rupertswood, which was looking for its first senior premiership since crossing to the RDFL. It was a hard-fought contest, with neither side able to break away. But the Cats hit the lead in the third quarter and stayed there, holding off the Sharks for an 11.14 (80)-10.7 (67) win. For Cats coach Jeff Andrews, there was a sense of relief when that final siren went. “It’s what you want in a grand final,” he said. “You can win them easy, but to be challenged couldn’t be more pleasing. It’s not all about ability, but a fair bit of character. “People are crying and people are hugging me … quite a few people here today are from the stint [as coach] I had nearly 20 years ago. “All those boys came today. They hadn’t been able to do it and had seen the club go into recess, but were be able to taste success today.” This year’s grand final was one in which both teams had periods of dominance. Andrews thought his players didn’t make the most of their share of the lead early. “I think it’s been the story of our year, that we haven’t capitalised,” he said. “Not making the most of our opportunities or kicking points – we thought we should have been further ahead. “The boys remarked at half-time that we got happy with ourselves when we got out to about four goals … to their [Rupertswood’s] credit, they turned it on for 15 to 20 minutes of the second quarter.” After kicking just one of the first five goals, the Sharks hit back late in the second quarter kicking five goals in a row to lead by 10 points at half-time. The Cats made the most of a slight breeze in the third quarter, scoring the first five goals of the second half. That meant the Sharks were left to do the chasing. They reduced the margin to 20 points at the last break. The Cats kicked the first goal of the last quarter, which was a relief for Andrews and the Cats. “The second half was a bit different,” Andrews said. “We were able to get our game

going and get it into our forwards and lock it in there. “Casey [Summerfield] and Erroll [McConnell] were good in the midfield with enormous pressure on, and we had some pretty good targets today. “Chris Kilmartin did an enormous job … we got the game on our terms, but we had to earn it.” Errol McConnell was awarded the Doug McIntyre Medal for best-on-ground as voted by the umpires. He was one of four players the Cats signed in the pre-season. Those four proved to be the finishing touches to a side already poised for success. Andrews had high praise for McConnell. “I reckon we had the toughest player in the competition in Casey Summerfield – and then Errol comes along,” he said. “In the very first quarter of the first game of the year, against Wallan, one of their star recruits went to do a fend off and he brought him down like a lion bringing down a gazelle. “Pound for pound, he’s the toughest player I’ve seen in the comp.” Summerfield took home the AFL Victoria Country Medal. Aaron Christensen and Daniel Markworth were other standouts for the Cats. Andrews, who has coached the club for five years in his second stint as coach, said he was weighing up his coaching future. “I love the club,” he said. “I’ve had two coaching stints here and I love it.
