Elisha’s brave battle By Serena Seyfort Life drastically changed for a young Bulla family last month when two-year-old Elisha seemed to have picked up a flu virus. Mum Nicole became more concerned when their bright and bubbly daughter spent most of the day sleeping and refused to eat. “This is a child that if she got a flu or a cold it didn’t stop her,” Nicole said. “And she never, ever, ever refused food – ever – in two and a half years,” Nicole said between laughs. Then Elisha wouldn’t stand up on her feet. On July 26, Elisha was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer that affects bone marrow, pre B acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

This week the little girl undergoes her fourth week of chemotherapy and another round of surgery. More than two years of treatment lies ahead. “This is a big battle,” Nicole said. Nicole has had to stop work to give her daughter 24-hour care. She said Elisha is now feeling a bit better overall, but there are bad days. “She’s doing exceptionally well considering what she’s going through,” Nicole said. The mother-of-three said Elisha has always been a happy child. “She just loves life,” Nicole said. “She’s always the first one to say hello and the last one to say goodbye.” “She is the most endearing, well-mannered, cheeky little girl you could imagine.” Elisha adores playing with her brothers, Ted, 4, and Charlie, 1, and her friends at childcare. The daycare centre she attends, Mickleham Road Early Learning Centre, has been fundraising in support of the family. The centre has started an online donation and has a collection tin at the door. Parents from the centre have also been trying to help out, getting their workplaces involved and donating items to raffle. “They have just been absolutely phenomenal,” Nicole said. “I am just speechless at the generosity of some people.” Contributions can be made to the Ward family at www.gofundme.com/elishas-fund

Stabbing accused not guilty A woman who fatally stabbed her neighbour 19 times has been found not guilty of murder due to mental impairment. Eva Whitecross, 55, killed 44-year-old fitness trainer Rachel Tyquin with a kitchen knife during an early morning walk in Sunbury, in 2016 but pleaded not guilty to murder, claiming mental impairment. “Mrs Whitecross, acting on her psychotic delusions, attacked and killed Ms Tyquin,” Victorian Supreme Court Justice Jane Dixon said in her judgment on Friday. Police alleged Mrs Whitecross attacked Ms Tyquin with a knife after they crossed paths about 5.55am on April 16, after both women

had been out on separate walks. Ms Tyquin was found on the footpath several doors from her home about 7.15am. She had suffered 16 stab wounds to the chest and neck. About 20 minutes after the attack, police say Ms Whitecross sent her husband a text message which read: “You better come home right now.” She later handed herself into police. Ms Whitecross entered a plea of not guilty in September. At the time, defence counsel Paul Galbally told the court his client would contest the charge by way of mental impairment. Ms Tyquin was a fitness instructor who from 2007 ran a personal trainer business from her home. Her clients would park their cars in the

street, which agitated her neighbour, according to court documents. Police said Mrs Whitecross had once asked Ms Tyquin if her clients could park outside the personal trainer’s home, but that she laughed at her and walked away. From that point, a prosecution summary alleges, Ms Whitecross began trying to intimidate Ms Tyquin by staring at her, regularly called her a “f--king s--t” and a “whore” and mowed the grass next to clients’ cars, which flicked clippings and stones onto them. By 2010 Ms Tyquin began fearing for her safety, police say, and in 2012 she took out an intervention order. Police allege Ms Whitecross

resumed abusing her neighbour once the intervention order expired. Ms Whitecross told police in an interview that on the morning of April 16 Ms Tyquin approached and struck her to the face. “She stepped towards me and then I felt her hand on my face. I didn’t think it was a fist, it was a hand and I reacted very badly,” she said. She told investigators she fell on top of Ms Tyquin and put her hand in her bag, where she found the knife. A young Kyneton artist has been recognised in a national youth art competition. Ella Byass has been selected as one of 20 finalists from 2000 entrants in the Art Gallery of NSW’s Young Archie Competition. The year 9 student’s portrait of her brother is on exhibit in the Art Gallery of NSW until October. Ella and her family will head to Sydney in September to visit the gallery and hear the final judging.

After a man’s near miss in a potentially deadly encounter with a train at Riddells Creek, V/Line is urging pedestrians and motorists to stop taking risks around train lines. V/Line security footage captured a man unlocking the safety latch at the Riddells Creek pedestrian crossing to illegally cross the tracks moments before a freight train roars past. V/Line chief executive James Pinder said the “senseless and reckless behaviour” was alarming. “The man could have been killed,” Mr Pinder said. “The pedestrian thought it was safe to cross because he had waited for the V/Line passenger train to pass, but had no idea there was a freight train coming in the opposite direction.” More than 190 Bendigo line incidents involving pedestrians and motorists were reported in the year to June. V/Line is calling for people to follow safety signals around train tracks. “We are pleading with people to avoid taking risks,” Mr Pinder said. “Please obey the signs and be patient because it’s not worth risking your life.” Mr Pinder said these types of incidents also had significant impacts on the train drivers. He said anyone who witnesses trespassers on rail lines should contact police.

Animal cruelty on the decline By Serena Seyfort The number of animal cruelty reports in Macedon Ranges is declining, but compared to the number of residents, incidents still exceed the statewide average. RSPCA Victoria recorded 96 reports about the welfare of animals in the Macedon Ranges in the year to June 30, ranking it 40th of Victoria’s 79 local council areas for animal cruelty reports. This marks an improvement on last year’s ranking of 29th, but the number of incidents

equates to one report for every 480 residents – compared to the state average of one report per 581 residents. It’s the opposite case in Hume, where 324 concerns about animal welfare were reported to the RSPCA this year. While Hume has gone up in the rankings – having moved to sixth place from seventh last year – the number of reports per person is below the state average, at one per 609 residents. Hume corporate services director Daryl Whitford said the council often worked

closely with the RSPCA to ensure animals were being treated according to the law. “Council has a leading role in preventing puppy farms, and auditing registered Domestic Animal Businesses, including breeding operations, pet shops and boarding kennels,” Mr Whitford said.

Macedon Ranges council director assets and operations Dale Thornton said council rangers worked with the RSPCA to investigate all reports. “We’re also in the process of finalising a new four-year Domestic Animal Management Plan that proposes activities focused on raising awareness and educating residents,” Mr Thornton said. A taste of gardening Keen Kyneton gardeners will demonstrate how to grow and maintain an edible garden next month. Eight gardeners from Kyneton and surrounding areas are inviting visitors to their edible gardens for Kyneton Transition Hub Open Edible Garden Day on Sunday, September 3. Organiser Nea Gyorffy said the green thumbs hoped “to show others how sustaining and life-affirming an edible garden can be”. Practical, inexpensive ways of replenishing soil, water management, weed and pest control and growing plants from seeds using chemical-free methods will be taught. Ms Gyorffy said those involved in the open day wanted visitors to leave thinking, “I can do this too.” Community gardens at Kyneton Secondary College and Malmsbury Primary school will be featured in the event.

State funding to develop Sunbury’s McMahon Recreation Reserve and the Sunbury Town Centre has been sought by Hume council. With Hume’s population steadily increasing, the council has called on the Victorian government’s Growing Suburbs Fund. The council has applied for $750,000 to upgrade Sunbury Town Centre, which would be added to the $750,000 of council funds allocated to the redevelopment. Mayor Drew Jessop said the upgrades would include improvements to laneways between Brooke, Barkly, Station and Horne streets, which would help businesses prosper. “These works will build on council’s ongoing Sunbury streetscape upgrades and will attract more visitors, helping local businesses flourish,” he said. The application comes as Sunbury’s retail precinct is experiencing what Sunbury resident of 40 years and business owner Jackie McAllister has described as the worst time for retail she has seen. A further $2.06 million has been sought for a new oval, second pavilion, playground, netball courts, landscaping, pathways and fitness stations at Sunbury’s McMahon Reserve. The funding would complement the $2.06 million of council funds intended for the project. Hume has applied for a total of $7.8 million from the fund.

Lorraine has always tried to be proactive about her health. The New Gisborne grandmother hadn’t been concerned about her heart, but decided to have a precautionary screening as part of a new study in Melbourne’s west. “I would rather do prevention than cure,” Lorraine said. The tests showed the 66-year-old’s heart muscle was functioning normally, but one of the top chambers of her heart was enlarged. This enlargement can be caused by a rhythm problem Atrial Fibrillation (AF) that puts people at risk of heart failure and stroke. Lorraine was given a handheld monitor to use at home to look out for AF, and was later given the all-clear. Lorraine was part of a major study aiming to prevent heart failure and she’s encouraging others to sign up. Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute is recruiting 800 people from Melbourne’s west for the study. It hopes the findings will help it come up with a new strategy to prevent older Australians developing heart failure. Director and cardiologist professor Tom Marwick said there was no effective strategy to identify heart failure. “Patients present late in the course of the disease where hospitalisation is inevitable and treatment responses are poor,” Professor Marwick said. The study uses a new, non-invasive imaging technique to investigate the benefits of screening and treating people at risk of heart failure. Participants in the study must be aged over 65 and must be either diabetic, have high blood pressure, or be overweight or obese. More calls for Calder traffic fix By Serena Seyfort

Calls for safety upgrades near Calder Park Drive continue. Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn raised the need for a Calder Park Drive overpass with Roads Minister Luke Donnellan in Parliament earlier this month. “It is not unusual at all to see huge numbers of cars banked back, trying to get off the Calder at Calder Park Drive,” Mr Finn said in Parliament. “It can be quite dangerous, particularly on a wet day.” Calder Action Group president and Sunbury resident Ian Sutherland told Star Weekly the group had been pressing for an overpass at the “very nasty level interchange” for more than four years. “There’s very little room for people to slow down to go down Calder Park Drive,” he said. “And if cars want to go to Melbourne coming back out onto the Calder … that means crossing two or three lanes of traffic at peak times.” Mr Sutherland said an overpass would allow the freeway maximum speed to remain at 100km/h for the whole stretch. He said VicRoads had completed a preliminary design in June and the project was awaiting funding. In May, Brimbank council also called for a fix to the intersection. Brimbank mayor John Hedditch said drivers negotiating the Calder Park Drive and Calder Freeway intersection needed “stunt-driving skills”. The council said it would write to federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Darren Chester and Mr Donnellan calling for funding.

The new president of Kyneton Rotary Club is already part of the club’s lore. The club’s presidency was handed over to Ken Porter – by his wife and business partner Shirley Porter – earlier this month. The handover marked the first time the leadership role had stayed within one family at the 50-year-old Kyneton club. It’s not Mr Porter’s first term as president, making him the second club leader to serve in the role more than once. Mr Porter, who has been a Rotarian for 16 years, said there had been many highlights. Op shop’s proud record Kyneton’s first op shop is celebrating half a century of community service. The Kyneton Uniting Church Opportunity Shop began servicing the local area 50 years ago – and one volunteer, 88-year-old Betty Ward, has been with the shop every step of the way. Ms Ward was one of 10 volunteers when the church initiative started, but today it has a team of more than 80 people on the books. Co-ordinator Flo Watson said the op shop had honoured the “wonderful effort” of all involved with a team celebration. “We’re quite proud of what we do,” Ms Watson said. In the 16 years she has been involved, Ms Watson said, the op shop had donated more

MY PLACE Michel Kroll believes helping others is fundamental to happiness. He loves fostering a sense of community and positivity in Sunbury. He talks with Serena Seyfort. I’ve lived in Sunbury for just over a year now. I’m originally from Berlin, Germany. I moved here because my wife is from Sunbury. How are you involved in your community? In my neighbourhood I try to help. When I have time, usually when I’m looking after my son on Saturdays and Sundays, I post on the Sunbury Region Community Facebook page and see if I can help anyone. Once I posted to give some spare bread away. I got so many responses, I ended up going to the bakery and delivering bread to seven families. I got a lot of messages on Facebook of people saying “I would love some bread, I’m just out of hospital” or “my husband’s away and I don’t have the car”. We’ve also got a lemon tree. I made a post so that people can just come by and grab lemons. It was really cool – I met a couple of other Germans through that. And I got a lot of yummy stuff that people made with those lemons. I was even given a free pizza from the pizzeria when they grabbed some lemons. It’s a good way to meet people. I’m a music producer and a musician … I’ve had a suggestion to go the elderly home and play there, which I plan to do this Sunday. My son and I will just go over and make some music. I play guitar and I sing. Why do you spend your spare time offering to help others? I think sometimes we are a bit stuck up in our own life. But the key to happiness is helping

others. That’s what makes me happy. And I think when we focus on other people’s lives and how we can make our community stronger, then we will end up much stronger and more positive. Initially, I started it because online there is a lot of negative news, like “this person drove too fast”, “this person scratched my car” … I think we need to focus more on the positive news. Those things will always happen, but if we focus on those bad things, we will attract more bad things. I’m actually going to open a positive news page on Facebook where people can only post positive news. Do you have a favourite place in Sunbury? The adventure playground in Jacksons Hill. I go there a lot with my son. What do you like about the area? I like that it’s close to the city but it still has this little town charm. The people are lovely in Sunbury. I love that people still talk to each other and say hello even though they don’t know each other. And everything is walking distance away from what you need. I love that we still have small shops. It’s a good place to live. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? (Shawn Smits)

What’s your connection to Sunbury?

I’d add some more community activity, some more music. I would like to see more bands, and more local bands, and events where people can just play their music and listen to music.

Lotus going the extra smiles to take care of Sunbury’s teeth Owner and head dentist Thi Nguyen set up a stall at Sunbury Plaza and says the initiative was a fun opportunity to get involved with the community and give away some prizes. “If people filled out a form with their details, they had a chance of winning one of three grand prizes – a Zoom Whitening package valued at $650; a check up, clean and a take-home whitening kit valued at $450; or a Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush valued at $200,” she says. The lucky winners were announced last Wednesday. Dental Health Week’s focus for 2017 was Oral Health for a Busy Life. It focused on promoting oral health education and awareness in the general community, motivating and educating dental professionals to promote oral health

and encouraging ongoing collaboration within the dental profession. All of these points Thi believes in deeply, after making a vow to open her own clinic as a result of her own negative dental experiences as a child. “It doesn’t matter how long the visit takes, I want all of my patients to feel respected, to feel at ease and to have a positive dental experience,” she says. “That is my motivation. SPORT Renewed focus pays off for Gisborne A strong second half of the season has Gisborne primed for a good tilt at the Bendigo Netball League finals. The Bulldogs had six wins, two losses and a draw in the first half of the season, but have been undefeated the second time around, with one round remaining. Bulldogs coach Guy Keane said they had focused on improving their game in the second half of the season, so they weren’t just making up the numbers come finals time. “We have played a really good second half of the season,” he said. “We’ve been playing some good consistent netball which has been a focus. “The second focus point was to have some good performances against teams we didn’t beat in the first half of the season. “We got return wins against Kangaroo Flat and Golden Square who beat us the first time.” On Saturday, the second-placed Bulldogs made it two wins for the season against Maryborough, winning 66-37.

The only team they haven’t beaten this season is ladder-leader Sandhurst. The two teams drew 39-apiece in their first match and front up against each other again on Saturday in the final round of the home-and-away season. “It gives you confidence that we’ve beaten every team but one at the moment,” Keane said. “Knowing we’ve had wins against sides could be crucial at stages of close games in finals.” Keane said Maddy Stewart had been a standout this season. After a slow start she was standing up in crucial games. Stewart missed Saturday’s game due to Victorian Netball League commitments, but will be back for the final round of the season. Tiana Newman, in the midcourt, has been another standout for the Bulldogs. Keane said he was still doing some tinkering with the line-up ahead of finals. “We had a couple of girls on holidays for four or five weeks and now they’ve come back into

the mix. All the positions are up for grabs and players have to earn their positions. “We’ve got some good combinations.” The Bulldogs under-17 team will also play finals. The Bulldogs are currently in fifth spot with only a game and half separating the top five teams. The A-reserve, B-grade and B-reserve sides will miss out on finals. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs football side had a low scoring win against bottom side Maryborough. The Bulldogs’ 8.10 (58)-5.10 (40) win was their seventh for the season. Jets roar into grand final

By Tara Murray The Sunbury Jets were challenged and they responded in the best possible way to claim a Big V women’s state championship grand final berth. All the pressure was on the Jets going into game two of the series against Knox Raiders after their most disappointing performance of the season in game one. Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama said the side came in switched on and it showed, especially in the first half. They led 17-5 at quarter-time and the margin increased to 13 points at the main break. It was an even second half with the Jets winning game two 62-51. “We knew one loss and our season was over,” Kereama said. “We had a really good week on the track and had a game plan coming in. “We played outstanding defensive basketball for the first half, especially in the first quarter. “Defensively we really knuckled down and got on with it.” Courtney Duever starred with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Josie Stockill also scored double figures. With game two in the bank, it came down to game three on Sunday. It was another Jets fast-starting first quarter, and they lead by 12 points at the first break. The Raiders fought back and took the lead in the third quarter. The Jets’ fighting spirit showed through and they responded to win 67-59 and seal a grand final spot. Kereama said they always knew that Knox would keep coming at them. “We kept them to an average of just over 50 points, which is really good. I’m really proud and know that we’ve done a good job. “They are a quality outfit that have been in this position before and have more finals experience than us.” Duever scored her second double-double of the weekend. The Jets’ now have the rare chance to claim division 1 and state championships titles in the space of two years. Standing in their way is Bulleen Boomers who defeated Waverley Falcons in two games. Kereama said it would be another challenging contest. “They’re a changed outfit from the first time we played them,” he said. “Last time Courtney didn’t play and they didn’t have Lauren Pearce playing. It’ll be the first time we’ve both played with full sides.” Game one will be played at Bulleen this weekend. Game two and, if needed,

game three, will be at Sunbury the following weekend. Meanwhile, several Jets are up for Big V awards. Chelsea Burns, who won the division 1 defensive player of the year award last year, is nominated again, this time in state

championships division. Orla O’Reilly is up for defensive player of the year, most valuable player and the all-star five team. Duever has been nominated for MVP and all-star five, while Kereama is up for coach of the year.

Kyneton coach Luke Beattie has taken the glass half-full approach to Saturday’s draw with Golden Square in the Bendigo Football League. While disappointed that his side wasn’t able to come away with the four points, Beattie sees lots of positives in the result. “We came together as a group on Tuesday night and talked through parts of last week’s game,” Beattie said. “We had a really good conversation and it re-energised the side.” In a battle of third against fourth, no team was able to get a hold on the game on Saturday and just two points separated the sides at three-quarter time. Both sides had their chances in the final quarter. The Tigers kicked 3.7 while Golden Square kicked 4.3. The final score, 10.11 (71)-9.17 (71). “We were really inaccurate having six more points,” Beattie said. “It was a real pressure game and we had opportunities to win it. “Golden Square also had chances. All I was after was an improved effort and I certainly got that.” Ben Weightman kicked four goals for the Tigers. Josh Govan and Rhys Magin were named the Tigers best. The Tigers remain in fourth spot with one round remaining. If luck had gone their way they could have been in the top three – they’ve had two draws and lost three games by less then 10 points. The draw though seals their finals spot heading into the final round. Whether they finish fourth or fifth is still to be decided. They face second-placed Strathfieldsaye in what Beattie says will be another challenge with finals-like intensity. “It’s one thing to get into finals, which was the initial challenge, now to win a final is the next challenge,” Beattie said. “We really want to be able to have an impact and I think we have the group that can do that.” Meanwhile, the Tigers’ A-grade netball side suffered a defeat at the hands of Golden Square, 80-25. Riddell league keen to keep the status quo The format of the Riddell District Football Netball League is set to stay the same for now, after a review into football and netball leagues in the region. AFL Goldfields last week presented clubs its findings of the review of senior football and netball for the four competitions it oversees. In the draft recommendations, AFL Goldfields recommended that the RDFNL stay with it’s 12 team format for 2018. It also recommended a further review of the RDFNL senior competition in 2021 to revisit whether the league should expand into two divisions. Throughout the review several clubs, mostly those in the bottom part of the competition, said they felt their future in the league was in doubt if a two-tier competition wasn’t started.

A two-tier competition would likely include clubs from the Ballarat Football Netball League. The BFNL’s eastern clubs, Sunbury Lions, Bacchus Marsh, Melton, Melton South and Darley, expressed a strong desire to stay in the BFNL and there was little support for that competition to go to two divisions. Gisborne, which plays in the Bendigo Football Netball League, said it would be interested in joining an RDFNL division 1 competition if the BFNL eastern clubs were to rejoin the RDFNL. The Bulldogs though were not interested in joining the BFNL. AFL Goldfields also recommended talks with Rupertswood Football Netball Club about a possible affiliation in the BFNL in the short to medium term. Sharks president Brad Pietromonaco said

this was the first the club had heard of the recommendations and they had no plans to move to any other league. He said the club was in favour of the two division competition. The draft recommendations stated it was important for AFL Goldfields and the RDFNL to continue to consider options for moving to a two-tier competition. AFL Goldfields expects junior clubs Eynesbury and Gisborne Giants to likely field senior teams in the future, making it important to have an entry level competition for them to start in. On the netball side, AFL Goldfields has recommended that a player points system be introduced across all four of its leagues to address the rising cost of player payments.

Finals delight for Roos By Tara Murray There were a few nervous moments for the Sunbury Kangaroos on Saturday afternoon, but eventually they were confirmed as the sixth and last Riddell District Football League finalist. Sitting in seventh and four points behind Romsey, Wallan and Riddell heading into the final round, the Kangaroos needed things to go their way. Riddell made sure of its finals spot early on against Broadford, leaving two spots for three teams. First the Kangaroos needed to make sure they defeated Woodend-Hesket. They did that, even if the process was not as easy as they would have liked. It was only late in the game that the Kangaroos were able to break the Hawks for a 14.8 (92)-7.8 (50) win.

Sunbury Tigers’ season is over in the first week of the NRL Victoria first grade semi-finals. The Tigers had the better of the game in the first half of the elimination semi-final against Northern Thunder and led 12-4 at half-time. Hawks late run to victory By Tara Murray Woodend-Hesket finished the Riddell District Netball League season on a high with its second win of the year. Facing Sunbury Kangaroos, who were looking for their first win of the season, it was the second quarter that proved the difference and the Hawks opened up a 30-20 lead at half-time. Both teams scored four goals each in the third quarter before the game came to an abrupt end when Kangaroos’ Ashlee Vaughan hurt her achilles. Vaughan could not be moved from the court while waiting for an ambulance. The Hawks were eventually declared the winners. Madeline Staresina was their best, scoring 24 goals. For the Kangaroos, centre Jaclyn Micallef was named their best. Ladder positions didn’t change for the top six despite four of those teams playing each other. Diggers Rest pushed ladder-leaders Macedon, but the Cats were too strong winning 38-32. Lancefield sealed third spot with a strong win against finals-bound Melton Centrals, 53-39. Second-placed Romsey was tested by a young Riddell side, but the Redbacks’ experience showed through and they won 45-41. Kendra Vann, playing up from B-grade, was the Redbacks’ best for a second week. In the other match, Rupertswood fired after a slow first half to beat Rockbank 48-31. Macedon and Romsey, which finished equal on points, will now face-off in the qualifying final at Romsey Park on Saturday. Third-placed Lancefield takes on Diggers Rest in an elimination final at Romsey Park on Sunday, while Rupertswood and Melton Centrals play each other in the other elimination final at Clarke Oval on Sunday.

Bulldogs have winning edge Gisborne’s debut season will continue for another week thanks to victory in its elimination final in the AFL Goldfields Women’s Football League. The Bulldogs went into the division 2 final on Sunday as red-hot favourites against Redan Gold, which hadn’t won a game for the season. But Bulldogs coach Anthony Carrigg said the 8.2 (50)-0.2 (2) win was far from easy. “Redan has improved,” he said. “We never thought we had an easy game and knew that we had to play our best footy. “They made us work for the win. They structured up really well. “We had a few girls who have played football before and know how to finish it off. That was the difference.” Natalie Dowdy, who was named the division 2 best-and-fairest winner on Friday night, kicked three goals in the win. Francesca Stevens, Bianca Zeinstra and Kate Donovan were named the Bulldogs’ best. The Bulldogs will face Drysdale in a semi-final on Sunday. The Hawks lost to Bacchus Marsh at the weekend.
