Sunbury push for retail fix By Serena Seyfort A consortium of Sunbury organisations is pushing for revitalisation of the town’s retail precinct. An unprecedented number of empty shops and a change in shopping habits has prompted Sunbury businesses, community health and Hume council to launch a fight-back. Sunbury Business Association treasurer Syliva Unferdorben, who has been in Sunbury since 1983, said she had never before seen so many closed shops in the town centre. “We’ve now got 10 empty shops in the main street – that’s huge,” she said. “We need to work out how to re-ignite Evans Street.” Sunbury resident of 40 years and business owner Jackie McAllister agreed it was “definitely” the worst time for retail in the town she had seen. Ms McAllister said her business was not directly affected by the downturn in trade, but she was participating in the Business Expansion and Retention program (BEAR) because she wanted to see Sunbury thrive again. “It’s a shame to see all the empty shops at the moment,” she said. Ms Unferdorben has spearheaded the push for participation in the Municipal Association of Victoria’s BEAR community workshops, which will help improve Sunbury’s business environment. She said it was important that as many different stakeholders as possible be on board. “We’ve all got to do it together,” she said. “There’s not one fix here.” Hume planning and development director Kevin Walsh said the council supported the introduction of the BEAR

program “to meet current challenges”. He said Sunbury was not immune to the “substantial changes” the retail world was going through. Ms Unferdorben agreed the wider economy and the rise of online shopping were playing a part in Sunbury’s struggles. But said that having talked to community members, she believed Sunbury’s “biggest issue” was accessibility, including difficulty finding a carpark and one-hour limits.

“You’ve got to get in and get out [when shopping] – you can’t linger,” she said. She said mums at the local school had told her they no longer bothered going into Sunbury for a one-hour park, instead preferring the longer parking times at Watergardens and Highpoint shopping centres. Ms Unferdorben said the BEAR program would give everyone the opportunity to express their views on what they think is affecting Sunbury’s retail precinct, including parking. The program will unfold in stages in coming months and will include workshops and discussions for residents, businesses and community groups. Kicking goals for footy talent There’s something in the water at New Gisborne’s Holy Cross Catholic Primary School. In the past eight years, six former pupils have pulled on their boots for the AFL. Mitch Hannan, Pat McKenna, Lachie Plowman, Tom Sheridan and Jarryd Allen (who retired in 2009), all attended the school. Kate Darby – one of the first women to play for AFL – was also one of the school’s pupils. Last week four of the footy stars returned to the school grounds to take part in a Footy Day. Hard decisions for Hanging Rock By Serena Seyfort A new visitor centre, new cafe and improved parking will be considered as the future of Hanging Rock is mapped out. The suggestions have been included in the draft Hanging Rock Master Plan Options Paper which has been released for public comment. The paper, which drew on community consultation from late 2016, also outlines options for trail upgrades, environmental improvements, sport facility options and event opportunities at the rock. Friends of Hanging Rock president Luke
Spielvogel said the group would push for recognition of the cultural and colonial history at the iconic site. “It’s a social landscape and it’s important people are there but not at the cost of cultural values,” Mr Spielvogel said. He said Friends of Hanging Rock wanted the east paddock to be incorporated into Hanging Rock Reserve, as was intended at its acquisition, so it has the same level of protection as the rest of the site. The use of Hanging Rock has divided the Macedon Ranges community for years. In February, the council was slammed by

residents and conservation groups for allowing international singer Ed Sheeran to hold a private concert on Hanging Rock – not in the east paddock where concerts are usually held. At the time, Federation of Environment and Horticulture Macedon Ranges spokesman Hilary Roberts said the concert set a “dangerous precedent”. “They’ve done this in
the most conservationally sensitive area on Hanging Rock itself … there’s been no history of having events up on the rock.” Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said any future master plan for the rock would take into account the views of the traditional owners – the Wurundjeri, Dja Dja Wurrung and Taungurung people. The final Hanging Rock master plan is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

New peak trains for Sunbury line
Cover boy for a good cause A Sunbury firefighter is doing his bit to help alleviate the suffering of children affected by burns and illness. Aaron Ficheroux has previously modelled for the charity Australian Firefighters Calendar and was this year selected to star on the front cover of the 2018 Victoria calendar. Next Thursday he will also appear on television’s the AFL Footy Show to promote the Australian Firefighters Calendar telethon.
As one of the Victorian firefighters involved in the campaign, he will answer phones as viewers call in to donate to children’s cancer charity My Room. Mr Ficheroux said he was driven to help fundraise for sick and injured children by his own three young children. “If my kids were ever in a position where they needed help in that kind of way, I would want the best help for them,” he said.
“That was my motivation, to be a part of something where I can give back to kids that can’t help themselves.” Sales of the Firefighters Calendar raise funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Westmead Children’s Hospital Burns unit. Commuters using the Sunbury train line will have a bit more breathing space by the end of the month, with the addition of 10 new weekday peak time services. An extra morning and evening peak service has been added to the Monday to Friday timetable, which will begin from August 27. Public Transport Victoria spokesperson Jake McLaughlan said the new services would help reduce the strain on peak hour services. “Starting August 27, Sunbury line passengers will benefit from 10 more peak services every week via the city loop as part of a new Metro timetable, providing capacity for an extra 9000 trips every week,” he said. The most recent passenger load survey on the Sunbury line showed 46.5 per cent of morning peak services were crowded above the acceptable benchmark, while 16.7 per cent of evening peak services were also overcrowded. The new morning peak service will depart Sunbury at 6.48am and go via the city loop, while the new evening peak service will leave the city at 4.30pm, also via the city loop. Four Sunbury line services will now run direct to Flinders Street via Southern Cross during the morning peak, removing the need to change trains or travel round the loop. The timings of buses that connect with trains – route 400 from Sunshine and 460 from Watergardens – will be adjusted to reflect the new train timetable. Ewen McRae

Projects that enhance shared community space in the Macedon Ranges can get a hand with funding and planning through the council’s 2017 People for Places program. Residents take watch By Esther Lauaki and Serena Seyfort Residents of a Diggers Rest street have taken neighbourhood watch to the next level, and a Sunbury street is about to follow suit. A spike in burglaries in the area prompted residents to take their safety into their own hands earlier this year by installing a live-view camera system. The safety cam initiative has the support of Community Against Crime group president Tim Payne who said it gave residents in the street “peace of mind”. Mr Payne said he is in discussions to introduce a similar system in parts of Sunbury. Cameras record 24-hour live digital footage along a street, with participating residents able to access real-time footage. Residents can also contact one another via a online messenger group to share information. “In September last year, the Diggers Rest community came together at a safety forum because residents were concerned about home invasions in the area,” Mr Payne told Star Weekly. “The crime rate in Diggers Rest was up 115 per cent at that time so there was a sense of concern among all the residents. “Following the safety forum … this community came to me because they needed help and they wanted to be proactive about their safety.” He said the cameras could help deter crime and, in the event of a crime or anti-social behaviour, help police detect those responsible. street have signed up for the program, with participants paying $400 in set-up fees plus an annual $150 fee for maintenance and support. “If one resident just looks at the app once a day, and there are 30 people in the street, you can almost guarantee that someone’s watching at all times,” Mr Payne said. Security specialist Jeremy Stewart, a sponsor of the safety-cam initiative, said public unrest about burglaries has boosted his business. “There’s no doubt that the rise in crime in the last 12 months has captured people’s imagination,” Mr Stewart said. “The fact that burglaries are up … has translated into a higher demand for security systems. “Our business is up about 15 per cent as people think more about their security.”

The heritage-listed flour mill in Piper Street, Kyneton is opening it’s doors to the public next month. Built in 1862, the former Willis Flour Mill is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register as being historically and architecturally significant to the state. The site consists of a four-storey bluestone mill with a three-storey timber extension, and a four-room bluestone residence and stables. “The mill was established in response to the growth of the population in the goldfields of central Victoria and to the construction of the rail line between Melbourne and Echuca,” according to the Victorian Heritage Register.

Victim relief as priest gets jail By Adam Cooper

De Dood also strapped another boy’s bare backside one night before sexually assaulting him and threatening expulsion if the boy told anyone, and on another occasion abused a sleeping boy in a dormitory.
One of the victims of the latest Salesian priest jailed for sex crimes at a notorious boarding school hopes his case will encourage others to contact police and seek justice. Richard Brown was one of five boys sexually assaulted by Frank De Dood, who was jailed last week for three years for abusing children he was either teaching or responsible for between 1978 and 1983. Four victims attended Salesian College Rupertswood, in Sunbury, the scene of a string of sex assaults when a group of paedophile priests worked at the school and preyed on students. Mr Brown was in the County Court as De Dood was jailed for a minimum 20 months. After the sentencing Mr Brown urged other victims of sexual assaults to contact police. “I just hope that the boys who are out there who haven’t come forward [know that] the process isn’t easy, but [there is] the satisfaction at the end of the day – you can get justice,” he said. “There’s a relief. It’s been a long time. It’s nice to have a result … for those of us who have been involved, we move forward and that’s all we can do.” De Dood was a teacher, sports coach and dormitory supervisor at Rupertswood who preyed on boys aged between 12 and 15 for his own sexual gratification. Judge Susan Cohen said De Dood once brazenly sexually assaulted a boy in a full classroom while discussing the student’s

The court heard De Dood admitted to a psychologist that he hit “plenty of kids”, but was reluctant to discuss the sexual offending. He pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault and one of indecent and unlawful assault, but only after he had his lawyer cross-examine three victims last year. In court on Monday last week, the 64-year-old kept his head down and his left hand near his mouth for the entire sentence and refused to look up even as Judge Cohen jailed him. Judge Cohen said De Dood had inflicted long-term damage on his victims, who as boys all experienced guilt, self-doubt, a reluctance to attend school and fears they would not be believed. The school, which last year issued a public apology to the survivors of its staff’s sexual abuse, declined to comment. – The Age

Locals in the picture The masterpieces of local photographers are on show in Lancefield. Macedon Ranges Photographic Society’s exhibition is open to the public at Mad Gallery and Cafe until September 7. The eclectic display has been guided by the photographers’ selection and interests. Retiree Allan Chellingworth has chosen to exhibit photos from his body of work that he describes as “a little different”. Ayers Rock, a pelican, a post and rail fence and a raindrop-covered rosebud from his garden have made the cut. The retired bus driver has been taking photos in his spare time for most of his life.
“Bus driving takes you to all sorts of places where you get lovely photos,” Mr Chellingworth said. “I had my own black and white darkroom in the earlier days when we did film.” The Bullengarook resident has enjoyed having more time to take photos since he retired. He said he particularly loved being a member of Macedon Ranges Photographic Society, where locals can indulge and share their interest in photography. Gisborne came from behind to beat Castlemaine in the Bendigo Football League on Saturday. The Bulldogs trailed at every break, but by no more than nine points. They saved their best for last, kicking five goals to two in the final term to secure a 17.13 (115)-15.14 (104) win. Trent Crosbie was named the Bulldogs’ best. Kyneton lost to ladder-leaders Eaglehawk 18.15 (123)-8.8 (56).
By Tara Murray Diggers Rest’s experience showed when it counted most, getting the Burras over the line against a determined Romsey side. For much of the Riddell District Football League match, the Burras had control yet struggled to convert. The Redbacks hung around and midway through the last quarter looked to have the running with scores level. But the Burras found another level to win the hard-fought contest 10.16 (76)-10.6 (66). Burras coach Shaun Sims was just happy to get the win. “We had double the scoring shots at half-time,” he said. “We started the second quarter really well and got out to a three- to four-goal lead … we dropped off for that 10 minutes and let them get back into the game. “The last half, some of our tackling was really good, but we let ourselves down with our finishing.” Mick Kilty kicked two goals, as did Lachlan Langford – including the sealer after a screamer late in the last quarter. Corey Wright was named the Burras’ best. The win was soured by some fresh injury concerns for the Burras. Tom Glesson and Stephen Ruane didn’t play any part in the second half, while Jamie Lobb was carried from the ground after some friendly fire. Sean Egan ended the game on the bench after taking a knock late. The Burras are third on the ladder. A win on Saturday and a Rupertswood loss could see them move to second. “We’ve used 43 players in the seniors,” Sims said. “It’s about getting continuity into the side, but we haven’t been able to do that. “Matty Krul, Josh Wallace, Michael Aitken will be available next week. Hopefully, we can come close to a full side come finals.” The loss leaves the Redbacks as one of four teams fighting for three finals spots heading into the final round. Wallan and Riddell moved to equal on points with the Redbacks with big wins, while Sunbury Kangaroos, who have a better percentage than the Redbacks, sit a game back in seventh after smashing Lancefield. The Redbacks will face Wallan in the final round, while the Kangaroos will face Woodend-Hesket and the Bombers will take on Broadford. In other results, Macedon and Rupertswood had no problems accounting for Woodend-Hesket and Rockbank.

Sunbury United’s hunt for points in its bid to stay out of the relegation zone came up empty on Saturday against Heidelberg Stars. United opened the scoring in the first half through a Jake McIntyre free kick that deflected off a Stars player. The Stars drew level in the 37th minute, before taking the lead in the opening minute of the second half. United couldn’t find an equaliser, losing 2-1.
Cricket
Sunbury United Cricket Club will return to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup competition this season as part of the new 10-team structure. Wallan, which finished runner-up in B grade last season, was offered the opportunity to go up to the top grade, but declined the invitation, opening the door for United to return.
Netball
Gisborne maintained its top two spot with an easy win against Castlemaine on Saturday. The Bulldogs were never challenged in the 38-11 win. The Bulldogs are six points clear of Golden Square with two rounds remaining. Kyneton lost to Eaglehawk 60-39.

Sunbury Lions season has come to end in the Western Region and Essendon District Women’s Football League. Lancefield’s biggest battle is fielding its best line-up Lancefield believes it has what it takes to win the Riddell District Netball League – but that it will need a bit of luck to go its way in terms of player availability. While the Tigers are third on the ladder, with just four losses, they have had a tough season at times. Coach Alan Watson said the hardest part had been trying to get the best line-up on the court every week. “Sometimes we’ve had 20 players out across the three teams,” he sad. “It’s not been ideal, but we’ve been able to battle through. “Last week [against Romsey] was our strongest team … for the last two months – and we still didn’t have our best team.” Watson said he was unsure whether there would be a full squad for finals, as it was a wait and see situation in terms of some players’ other sports commitments. On Saturday, again without their full side,
the Tigers easily accounted for bottom outfit the Sunbury Kangaroos. A 24-11 first quarter was a sign of things to come, with the Tigers winning 77-43. Tahnysha Salanoa scored 45 goals in the win, while Courtney Annett shot 32 goals from 33 attempts to be best on court. For the Kangaroos, Ashlee Vaughan, who shot 28 goals, was named the best in the loss. The Tigers are third, where Watson is confident they will remain. Rupertswood, in fourth, needs the Tigers to have a big loss to Melton Centrals and itself to have a big win against Rockbank to have any chance of snatching third spot. The Tigers’ four losses have come against the other three sides in the top four. A total of four goals separated the Tigers and Romsey in their two games, while they were undermanned in their losses to Rupertswood and Macedon.
“We have a serious team on the park when they all play,” Watson said. “We just need to put our best foot forward and we’ll keep chipping away and give it a shake.” In positive signs for the Tigers, they will have three sides playing in finals – A, B and C grades. The B-grade side is fourth and the C-grade team fifth with one round remaining. In other A-grade results, scores were level at half-time between Diggers Rest and Romsey before the Redbacks came out on top in the second half. Macedon was too good for Rockbank, Melton Centrals did the job against Riddell and Rupertswood defeated Woodend-Hesket. Lions cement their dominance in lead-up to finals Sunbury Lions are focusing on their own game plan and making sure they’ve done everything possible in the lead-up to the Ballarat Netball League finals. With two rounds remaining, one a bye for the Lions, they’ve got four sides already qualified for finals. Their top three sides, A, B and C grades, sit atop the ladder, with one draw and one loss between them. The D-grade side is also looking at a top-two finish, currently just percentage behind second-placed Bacchus Marsh. Lions’ coach Adam Boldiston knows his club is the hunted this season, but is not daunted. “We’re still going along alright,” he said.
“The last couple of weeks we’ve won in really windy conditions and the girls have worked through some really good combinations. “We’ve had quite a few out with VNL [Victorian Netball League] commitments. We’ve had to draw on some other players. It’s pleasing to still get wins, it shows the depth in the club. “The important stuff is still in front of us and we’re focused on what we have to do.” Boldiston said he hoped to have his full A-grade side back for the final round against Sebastopol. He said they would use that match to work on their game plan and iron out any issues ahead of finals.
The B-grade side, which hasn’t lost since 2014 and is going for a fourth-straight premiership, has been hit with a couple of outs. Lauren Wishart and Nicole Isles are out for the season. Boldiston said they would look at qualifying a couple of C-grade players ahead of finals to help out if needed. “We’ve got a set seven now so we can really work on combinations,” he said. “The competition is there and we don’t just think we’ll walk away with a premiership. “It’s exciting and refreshing for the girls not to have it all their own way.” The C-grade team is going for back-to-back premierships.
On Saturday, all four Lions teams had wins against Darley. In the seniors’ football, the Lions were left to rue a goalless second quarter against Darley in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. After leading by six points at quarter-time, the Lions found themselves trailing by 19 points at the main break. The margin blew out early in the fourth quarter, before the Lions kicked some late goals to make the score more respectable. The final score was 13.6 (84)-9.8 (62). Jets’ game fails to fire By Tara Murray Sunbury Jets will have to snap back if they are to keep their season alive after their worst Big V Championship match of the season. The Jets were soundly beaten by the Knox Raiders in the first game of their best-of-three semi-final series – the final margin surprising some people. Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama made no excuses for the 86-57 defeat on Saturday night, saying his team didn’t turn up to play. “We started really well,” he said. “But then defensively we weren’t good enough on the night. I don’t think the players executed the scout or the game plan. “Knox was really good and, credit to them, they were aggressive. The result was part their offence and part our defence. “It’s very disappointing.” While only Orla O’Reilly scored double figures with 20 points, it was the defence Kereama found most disappointing. “I don’t think our players brought it on the night,” he said. “Everything we set up is through defence. “They scored 86 points which is the most we’ve given up this season. “We didn’t do a great job and the result reflected that.” Not all is lost of the Jets who host game two on Saturday night and if needed game three on Sunday. The winner of the series goes through to the grand final series. Kereama is confident the side will bounce back and play their style of basketball this week. “The week off hurt us and we lost a bit of momentum,” he said. “We will be ready and we know we are good enough to match it with the best teams in the competition. “You have to bring your A-grade game every week. Honestly, any of the top six teams could have won it. You look at the teams which were knocked out last week, Hume and Ringwood, and they are really good sides. “We need to regroup and be more hungry.” The Jets’ youth league women’s side is through to the division 2 grand final, but needed three games to get the job done. After winning game one against Southern Peninsula Sharks 59-39 last weekend, the Jets had a lot tougher job on Saturday night. Trailing for much of the game, the Jets fell short by one point, losing 54-53. They bounced back on Sunday to claim game three and a grand final spot 62-35. In other news, the Sunbury Basketball Association will host a pre-season invitational match on September 9 from 7.30pm. The Melbourne Boomers will play a side made up Big V, SEABL and possibly former Australian Opals players. Thunder sticks with game plan While several Essendon District Football League clubs are looking for new coaches for next season, East Sunbury will stick with Steve Grey. Following last week’s reappointment announcement, Grey will embark on his fourth season in charge of the senior side. Thunder president Keith Osborne said the club wanted to stick with what was working. He highlighted the development of the side under Grey, with the team improving each year under his guidance. With one round to go, the Thunder has won as many games as it did last season in division 2. Osborne said the side’s average scores were higher, fewer goals were being conceded and the average losing margin had decreased. He said the club was confident the young playing group would continue its upwards momentum. On Saturday, the Thunder claimed the scalp of finals-bound Northern Saints. The Thunder flew out of the blocks to keep the Saints scoreless in the first quarter. At other times this season the Thunder has given up big leads, but on Saturday the players maintained the pressure to claim a comprehensive win. Corey Mobilio and Tom Cree kicked three goals each for the Thunder, while Lachlan Brne was named best on ground. It’s the second time this season the Thunder has beaten a side headed for the finals. The Thunder, fifth on the ladder, will face Burnside Heights in the final round. Thunder’s reserves side is fourth. A win against winless Burnside Heights will nail a finals spot. s far as facelifts go, the updated Mazda2 is more Megan Fox than Mickey Rourke. Mazda has given its city car a blink-andyou’ll-miss-it nip-and-tuck that centres on improving its substance rather than its style, with more safety, more choice and more refinement. Exterior changes have been kept to a minimum (different trim elements and a new finish on the alloy wheels in high-grade models; side indicators move to the mirrors). But dig deeper into the specifications and you’ll find there’s more standard equipment, including automated emergency braking on every model and improved dynamics with the addition of Mazda’s G-Vectoring control, as well as a new range-topping GT variant and drive-away pricing. The range starts with the entry-level Neo at $16,990. It has a six-speed manual transmission (auto is a $2000 option on all models) with 15-inch steel wheels, cruise control, air-conditioning, push-button start, Bluetooth connectivity and rear parking sensors. It also picks up automated emergency braking and electric folding mirrors. It is powered by a less sophisticated version of the 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. All other models, from the next-level Maxx upwards, have the same engine with a higher compression ratio cylinder head. The Maxx costs $2700 more and gets 15-inch alloy wheels and a 7-inch colour multimedia display with six-speaker audio, internet radio apps, a reverse camera, rear emergency braking and digital radio. The new top-of-the-range GT is essentially a style upgrade and is available in sedan and hatch from $23,680. On the GT hatch we
tested as part of its launch, the bold interior adds colour and class. In all other aspects, the 2 performs just like it always has, which is no bad thing. Like before, we love it for its dynamic fizz and all-round solid driving character. The engine might not have the low-down urgency of some of its turbo-charged European rivals,
but it revs freely, feels spritely away from the lights and achieves close to its claimed fuel consumption in everyday conditions. All in all, the Mazda remains a stylish, fun and frugal small car and is safer and better value than before. Andrew Maclean
