Dingo pups cuddle call Fancy a cuddle with the newest and cutest additions to the Dingo Discovery Research Centre in Toolern Vale? Members of the public have a rare chance to get up close to the six-week-old pups and tour their Dingo Den on weekends until the end of this month. Dingo Discovery Centre owner Lynn Watson said that with dingoes under threat from crossbreeding, the new purebred pups would help bolster numbers around the globe. “All these little dingoes are the drivers for our engine to keep the bloodline going,” she said. People can meet both baby and adult dingoes, and learn about why the breed is so important, when they visit, she said. “The 18 puppies are certainly a handful – they’re very, very cheeky, intelligent and absolutely love to play,” she said. The puppies will be at the centre for the next few months until they are old enough to leave mum and dad and be relocated to other wildlife parks in Australia and around the world. Health care leads nation A mental health program offered in Macedon Ranges schools is inspiring other councils. Macedon Ranges council’s Live4Life program was last week awarded the 2017 Community Development (Organisation) award by Suicide Prevention Australia and is being used as a model for other rural councils. The Live4Life program, which has been used in high schools since 2010, was nominated for the award by a teenage participant. Program co-ordinator Pauline Neil said the award was great recognition. “It’s a real credit to the community,” she said. “They have put their hand up to participate in the training and to support Live4Life wherever they can.”

“Our vision is that [the] Life4Life model be made available to all rural councils across Victoria.” Live4Life was born in 2010 in response to an emerging need for mental health care among young people. “In 2008, we lost two young men to suicide over one particular weekend,” Ms Neil said. “We also had a reported increase in young people presenting with high levels of anxiety, depression and distress.” Today more than 5000 students and 600 adults have participated in the program. Live4Life educates year 8 students about mental health issues, then reinforces the program with leadership opportunities for year 9 and 10 students who help present sessions. Mental health first-aid training is revisited in

year 11. The program points youth to 24-hour help lines and online services when they are unable to access support in person. It also encourages parents, carers and teachers to invest in young people’s mental health through youth mental health first-aid training courses. “We go through what [mental illness] might feel like, look like and sound like within them and their friends, and what to do with that,” Ms Neil said. She said promoting youth mental health was particularly important in rural communities because immediate face-to-face support was not as readily available as in metropolitan areas. “We have an issue in rural Victoria where if you’re living out in the back blocks of Lancefield,

Station ‘switch’ a carpark fix By Serena Seyfort Long-time Sunbury resident John McKerrow believes he has the solution to Sunbury’s parking woes. The former Bulla shire engineer and town planner for 36 years says there is one simple way to solve Sunbury’s lack of parking – relocate the metro train station. He has proposed shifting the station and bus depot to four hectares of grassland on Evans Street, a move he says would direct commuters away from the town centre, freeing up carparks

at the current station for Sunbury shoppers. The existing train station could remain for V/Line services, while removing the metro service would reduce pressure on Sunbury’s level crossing, he said. “Every citizen in Sunbury complains about the lack of car parking in the town’s centre,” he said. “Shops are closing because of it. We need to make the present carparking around the station available for shoppers in Sunbury.” Mr McKerrow said the cost of building a new station and carpark could be minimal, with Sunbury train signalling already being handled

by Craigieburn station. The four-hectare site in Evans Street was bought by the Shire of Bulla in 1986 for $280,000 for future development. Mr McKerrow believes Hume council should return the land to Sunbury to help fix the town’s CBD carparking issues. Mr McKerrow, who has lived in Sunbury

for 54 years and has “been part of Sunbury’s growth”, has been campaigning to fix congestion in Sunbury since 2010. He has written to various government bodies, including the Growth Areas Authority, the Department of Transport and the minister for planning in the past seven years asking them to consider his proposal. The authority told Mr McKerrow in 2012 it was not in a position to get involved. Mr McKerrow said the carparking issue needed to be resolved “in order for Sunbury to stay alive”.

A Gisborne artist has been named as a finalist in a national art competition. William Ritchie’s oil painting Pyro will be exhibited in Caloundra, Queensland as a contender for the Holmes Acquisitive Art Prize for Excellence in Realistic Australian Bird Art. But before the artwork makes the trip up north it is available for viewing in Mount Macedon.

Sunbury State Emergency Service volunteers are celebrating after the latest round of state government funding. Last month, Sunbury SES unit was granted a further $190,600 for facility and equipment upgrades. Sunbury SES unit controller Anthony White said the financial support was needed to keep up with Sunbury’s increasing population. “The Sunbury community is growing and Sunbury SES needs to grow with it,” Mr White said. “These grants will help ensure that the Sunbury community continues to have the best emergency response capabilities possible. “This is a great day for not only Sunbury SES but also the whole Sunbury community.” The money will help pay for a new shed containing two truck bays, concreting and sealing the unit driveways, a stretcher carrier, portable lighting, portable fridges and a sandbag-filling trailer. The grant was part of round three of the state’s Emergency Service Volunteer Sustainability Grants program. In June, Sunbury SES unit received about $50,000 to upgrade its security and driveway in the program’s second round. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said he encouraged all Sunbury volunteer brigades and units to visit the Emergency Management Victoria website and apply for grants.

She said she had seen a definite change in the industry during her 25 years. Ms McDonell said while there were few women on the job when she started, it didn’t personally affect her career. “The guys where I worked on the north west were more than happy to accept us for who we were and what we did,” she said. “We didn’t look upon ourselves as females we were paramedics who happened to be female.” The Riddells Creek resident has been working out of the Gisborne Ambulance station for the past seven years. “One of the things I really enjoy about working in Gisborne is the community aspect of it,” Ms McDonell said. She said it meant she was able to follow up with patients and stay connected with them.

Dee McDonell is the only female Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance paramedic in the Macedon Ranges. Her recent 25-year milestone of working as a paramedic coincided with Ambulance Victoria’s recognition of 30 Years of Women In Ambulance. July 27, marked 30 years since women were able to become paramedics. And while women now make up almost half of Ambulance Victoria’s frontline, when Ms McDonell started, female officers were still uncommon.

Ms McDonell said there wasn’t the same opportunity to make connections with people in metropolitan areas because the workload was so great. “We get time to actually treat our patients, and most patients get transported to Melbourne

so we spend time in the ambulance together.” Overall, Ms McDonell said being a paramedic had been “a great career”. She said “being a part of something bigger” and being accepted into homes by patients was “very humbling”.

School master plan mapped out By Serena Seyfort Future plans for the Kyneton Primary School site are a step closer. The state government last week announced it was putting $65,000 towards developing a master plan for the Baynton Street site. Macedon Ranges council will add $10,000 of council funds to explore options for the site. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the council was committed to investigating the site as a community space. “This iconic site holds a place in the history

of most residents and former residents of Kyneton,” Cr Anderson said. “Given that it is centrally located and has plenty of space there’s great potential for it to become an important community hub for any number of activities.” Works on the master plan are expected to start immediately and will include extensive community consultation. Kyneton Primary School is scheduled to vacate the site at the end of the year. There’s been plenty of conjecture about the future of the site since the primary school’s

move to Edgecomb Street was announced in February. Fourteen of 79 submissions received about the council’s budget this year were about the site’s future. Many community groups declared their interest in using the space and asked to be part of any future planning.

“U3A Kyneton and its members would welcome the opportunity to participate in a widespread consultative process,” wrote one submission. Another U3A member told the council that its meeting venue was unsuitably on a busy road and difficult to access as an elderly, disabled member. Totally pawsome heroes Dog lovers and dogs are invited to Woodend library for the launch of a local author’s 18th book, K9 Heroes. Having produced a range of nonfiction and fiction books, Woodend author Dee White said K9 Heroes was devoted to her appreciation of man’s best friend. “I’ve always loved dogs,” White said. “They often pop up in my books somewhere, but this book is devoted entirely to canines.” K9 Heroes is based on true stories about dogs who have saved people’s lives around the world. “There are a lot of books about people who have rescued dogs – but not about dogs who have rescued people,” White said. The dog-lover said her kelpie-koolie cross Puff had inspired the new book. Now deceased, Puff once rescued a couple of kittens which White and her sister then adopted as pets. The book launch will be held at Woodend

library from 10.30am on August 26. Prizes will be given out for the pooch with the biggest smile, smartest trick and the dog most like its owner. A 40-year-old Sunbury man was shot while riding on a motorbike across the Bolte Bridge. Police were told a group of men were riding motorbikes south along the bridge about 8.30pm on July 28. A vehicle passed the group, shots were fired and the Sunbury man was hit. He came off his bike and slid into a barrier. He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Macedon Ranges residents are gearing up to take part in a Victorian event dedicated to improving the lives of people living with Parkinson’s disease. Locals living with Parkinson’s, their families, carers, friends and supporters will participate in Victoria’s A Walk in the Park in Federation Square on Sunday, August 27. Members of Macedon Ranges’ own support network, The Lancefield & District Parkinson’s Support Group will be among them. The group unites people living with Parkinson’s who live in the region. The

SPORT Sharks break out early By Tara Murray Rupertswood ended Riddell’s eight-game winning streak and returned to the winner’s list in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. Coming off a disappointing performance the week before against Macedon, the Sharks didn’t muck around early against the Bombers. Sharks’ coach Kevin Fitzgerald said they put it on the playing group to respond after the below par performance the previous week. And he was pleased with how they bounced back. They kept the Bombers goalless in the first quarter and led by 30 points at half-time. The Sharks put the game away in the third quarter and went on to win 16.8 (104)-6.8 (44). “We thought we could have played a lot better last week so we just put it on the boys to respond and I think they did the job,” Fitzgerald said. “In reality, the first four goals Riddell kicked were from our mistakes. I thought we did a really good job, we just didn’t finish off to give them the first four goals. “Riddell are a lot like us, with a lot of kids in amongst it … They’re really good [and] aggressive defensively. “I felt we outworked them and that was what I was more happy with, we worked hard.” Todd Podolczak and Sean Hetherington kicked four goals each in the win and both were named in the best. Jayden Egan became the ninth player to make his senior debut this season for the Sharks. Fitzgerald said the players coming through continue to press their claims for a senior spot. “We’ve played 42 different blokes in our seniors this year,” he said. “You can whinge about who you haven’t got, but every side is missing players. “We’ve been able to bring in blokes and still been able to get into a winning position despite missing players “We’ve played a lot of kids … When you look at the age profile, we’re young. They’re good footballers, but inexperienced, that’s the question – can they do it when the heat’s on?” The Sharks are second on the ladder, a game behind Macedon and percentage ahead of third-placed Diggers Rest. With matches against Woodend-Hesket (ninth) and Rockbank (11th) in the final two rounds, the Sharks have their eyes firmly set on a top two spot. The loss leaves the Bombers sitting on the edge of the top six, a game clear of seventh-placed Sunbury Kangaroos. The Kangaroos finals hopes suffered a massive dint, with a shock 11.16 (82)-4.14 (38) loss to Melton Centrals. Wallan, Macedon, Diggers Rest and Romsey all won their matches as expected.

Burras name new coach As the Diggers Rest township thrives with booming housing developments, Diggers Rest Bulla Village Cricket Club is reaping the benefits. The Burras have seen an influx of players both at junior and senior level from people who have moved to the area. AVID Property Group, which is responsible for the Bloomdale development in Diggers Rest, is the club’s major sponsor and has played a big part in helping the club’s development in recent years. More recently, one of the town’s newest resident’s Rasika Batepola has come on board as playing coach. Batepola comes to the Burras after six seasons as player and coach with PEGS in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association. Previously he played 130-odd first class games in Sri Lanka and played 14 years of English minor county cricket. He also coached during his time in England. A chance meeting between Burras all-rounder Lindon Dowsett and one of Batepola’s friends set the wheels in motion. “My friend met Lindon while on a train,” Batepola said. “Lindon told my friend that they were looking for an experienced coach for the club and then my friend told him about me. Within a week I met the president and committee and then put pen to paper after a couple of weeks.” Batepola said the proximity of the club to his new home was what first attracted him to the role and the players and committee had been more than welcoming. The new coach said he was keen to share his extensive cricket knowledge with the community. He said he brings a positive mind-set and tools to help handle important situations to help get wins. “I’ve got so much to offer,” he said. “Hopefully we can develop cricket in the area and produce a few top class cricketers.” The club’s top side finished fifth in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup last season. Players started pre-season training last week and the club plans to add a couple more batsmen before the opening game. In another plus for the Burras, they will look at fielding a girls’ side for the first time in 2017-18. Tara Murray

Cannons’ late charge seals victory Calder Cannons left it to the dying seconds to seal victory against Northern Knights in TAC Cup action on Saturday. Under the pump all day, the Cannons hung in against the higher-ranked Knights and trailed by a goal in the dying minutes. A free kick to Jesse Firebrace in the forward 50 gave the Cannons the match and kept their finals hopes alive. “We got a free just before the siren,” Cannons coach Andrew Johnstone said. “With a bit of wind behind him, Jesse kicked through the ball and got the goal. The siren went before the ball went back to the middle. “He was pretty excited after kicking it.” The Cannons took the win 7.10 (52)-6.10 (46). For Johnston the win was a bonus – he was impressed by how well the side had handled adversity. “We played three quarters with only two

players on the bench and had a couple of players playing on one leg,” Johnston said. “Jack Evans came off in the first quarter and Shane Skidmore didn’t come back on after quarter-time. “The result didn’t matter, it was the way they pushed through and were really resilient and the effort was pleasing. “The result though was really good.” Lucas Cavallaro was named the Cannons best, while skipper Brad Bernacki was prominent. Ben Huggard and Jack Bytel kicked two goals each for the Cannons. The win leaves the Cannons sitting only percentage out of the top eight with three rounds remaining. For Johnston the next three rounds are about continuing to build on what they’ve been doing this season.

Romsey builds foundation for finals Romsey got a taste of finals-like pressure three weeks early in its hard fought win against Lancefield in Riddell District Netball League. Sitting second and third on the ladder, both sides wanted to get the edge ahead of finals and keep the fight for a top-two spot open. In what is becoming the norm between the two teams, the game went down to the wire. In the past two matches between the sides the Redbacks have won by one goal. This time it claimed a three-goal win, 40-37. Redbacks coach Lena Way said it was a good test for the side ahead of what is looking like a very open finals series. “The two sides are very well matched up,” she said. “It was good to have a tight game like that in the lead-up to finals. “Lancefield was up by three goals in the third quarter and I was a little worried. “We made some good changes and they worked in our favour, we got the match-ups right.”

Way said Amelia Brock, who shot 17 goals, had an impact when she came on, while Stacey Demios shut down Taylah Watson and Lauren Anglin provided a calm head late in the game. She was also full of praise for defenders Stefanie Symes and Sarah Szczykulski who created a lot of turnovers. The win seals a top-two spot and double chance for the Redbacks. They sit percentage behind ladder leaders Macedon. Way said the aim pre-season was to finish in the top two. Having sealed that with two rounds to go is a bonus for the Redbacks, which has five players in Victorian Netball League finals action. Way said they would continue to manage those players until those commitments were finished. The VNL grand finals are held the same day as the final round of the regular RDNL season. “We’ve had a lot of depth which has been good and we haven’t had to go looking for players,” Way said.

“We’ve made sure we’ve been sharing court time throughout the season, with having players out every week.” The loss means Lancefield remains in third spot, now only a game clear of Rupertswood. Tahnysha Salanoa, who shot 21 goals, was named their best in the loss. Rupertswood defeated Riddell by seven goals in a less than convincing performance. By Tara Murray Sunbury Lions have toughed out a hard match against Melton to continue their stellar record of making Ballarat Football League finals. In a match of high value for both sides – the Lions eager to claim a finals berth, Melton eager to help keep its finals hopes alive – no quarter was given in the first half. Lions coach Ben Jordan said it wasn’t the prettiest game of football in windy conditions. He said it was the third quarter that proved the difference in the 8.7 (55)-4.7 (31) result. “There was a fair bit to play for, for both teams,” Jordan said. “I think both sides play a contested game and I didn’t think it was going to be a high-scoring match. “It was a scrappy, tight contest. There wasn’t fantastic ball movement, but in the third quarter we were more efficient going forward and the intensity lifted. “It gave us a buffer going into the last quarter. With the wind in the last quarter, we were able to control the footy and grind out the win.” Alik Magin was the only multiple goalscorer on the ground kicking two goals in the Lions’ win. Ruckman David Kovacevic was named best on ground. The Lions’ win came with a quarter of their best side missing. Jordan said those coming up from the under-19s and reserves were holding their own. Jacob Bygate and Bradley Mundy made their senior debuts against the Bloods. The win seals a finals berth for the Lions, maintaining their impressive record of having played finals every one of the 21 years they’ve been in the Ballarat Football League. They are currently sitting in fifth position on the ladder. “It’s an impressive record and shows success is expected,” Jordan said. “Over the years, we may not have been right up there, but we’ve still managed to make finals. “It speaks volumes of those who have come before me.” The Lions face Darley this weekend, then have a bye before playing bottom-side Sebastopol in the final round. Jordan said that they were looking for good performances in the remaining rounds to take momentum into finals. The club has also had an eye on things going forward off the field, with Jordan re-appointed for next season. Jordan said the club was keen to avoid a repeat of last season, when he was appointed late. “The committee were happy to offer me the role and I was happy to do it again,” he said. “I feel we’re going in the right direction. Hopefully, we’ll sign most of the playing group as well.”

In A-grade netball, the Lions easily accounted for the Bloods 57-23. In a battle between top and bottom, the Lions jumped out of the blocks to lead 20-6 at

quarter-time. That trend continued for the rest of the game. Chloe Curran shot 40 goals for the Lions, with Ashleigh Hardy named best on court.

Gisborne will take away plenty of lessons from its loss to Eaglehawk in the Bendigo Football League on Saturday. The Hawks are the benchmark side in the competition this year, while the Bulldogs are one of the young, developing sides. The Hawks jumped out of the blocks to have a six goals to none quarter-time lead and the game was all but over at half-time with the Hawks leading 70-16. The Bulldogs tried hard in the second half but couldn’t bridge the gap and eventually lost 20.10 (130)-7.11 (53). Bulldogs coach Brad Spear said that while they hadn’t been able to match it with the top sides this season, the manner of Saturday’s loss stung. “It was disappointing to let Eaglehawk get away from us,” he said. “They worked hard and ran hard and much cleaner with the ball. “We spoke about it after the game – that they have a similar game style to us and are the model of how to go about things.” Jack Baker was best in the loss for the Bulldogs. Spear said they were hoping to get reward for effort by snaring a few more wins before the season ends. Sunbury United has let slip a perfect opportunity to move out of the relegation zone in FFV state league 3 north-west. Ninth-placed United was beaten 3-0 by 10th-placed Fawkner. The result means the two sides have swapped ladder positions, with the 10th-placed team to play off in a relegation-promotion final come season’s end. In state league 5 west, Kyneton District lost 4-0 to Laverton and Gisborne defeated Moonee Valley 2-1.

The Lions, who finished third on the ladder in the first season of this competition, faced Caroline Springs in an elimination semi-final at the weekend. Having beaten Caroline Springs during the season the Lions took plenty of confidence into the match. They had the better of the first quarter, but couldn’t convert it to goals, kicking five behinds to nothing. Caroline Springs hit the front in the second quarter and led by one point at the main break. It was the Lions who dominated in the second half, kicking 2.6 in the third quarter and 2.2 in the final quarter to seal a 5.15 (45)-2.3 (15) win. The Lions now face Manor Lakes in a preliminary final on Sunday. The winner will take on Keilor in the grand final. In the only match between the Lions and Manor Lakes this season, Manor Lakes came out on top, winning 10.14 (74)-3.0 (18). Meanwhile, the Lions youth girls side is through to the grand final. After winning all their home and away games by massive margins, the Lions had a much closer battle on Sunday against Pascoe Vale. The Lions led by four points at half-time, before keeping the Panthers goalless in the second half to win 7.8 (50)-2.4 (16). Madison Prespakis kicked three goals in the win. The Lions will play the winner of the preliminary final between Pascoe Vale and Keilor.

Bowls

Sunbury Bowling Club’s Carla Krizanic took home the 2017 Golden Nugget women’s title last week. Krizanic, who has recently been crowned Australia’s No.1 women’s bowler for 2016-17, defeated Ellen Ryan 25-17 in the final at the Golden Nugget in Tweed Heads.

East Sunbury wasted a dominant start against Coburg Districts in Essendon District Football League division 2. The Thunder led by 37 points at quarter-time, but could kick only one goal for the last three quarters to lose 14.10 (94)-7.10 (52). Caine Schofield was the Thunder’s best in the loss.
