Low rainfall cold comfort Winter has well and truly blown in. But while chilly temperatures have set upon the region and locals are scraping ice off their windscreens in the morning, the typical downpours have stayed away, with rainfall well below average. Kyneton had only recorded seven millimetres of rain before the weekend – a long way short of the June average of 84.4 millimetres. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, unusually low rainfall was the case all across the region – Gisborne only recorded 12.2 millimetres of rain, meaning flooding would be needed this week to reach the monthly average of 75.1 millimetres. Snow is yet to be sighted locally, but there’s still at least two months ahead of rugging up and lighting the fire to escape the chill. MILA, 3

Winery drafts grand plan By Serena Seyfort Sunbury’s Goona Warra Estate could undergo a significant transformation if a proposed $45 million development gets the green light. Plans for a major investment at the winery on 780-790 Sunbury Road are being considered by Hume council. The proposal includes construction of a 76-suite hotel, nine self-contained villas, two restaurants, 192 car parks, further function space and a spa. Compared to the current facilities – a restaurant, function centre and manager’s residence – infrastructure on the property would significantly increase. Tract Consultants, which prepared the plans
on behalf of the estate’s owners, stated that the development would consider the natural landscape. The planning application stated the winery was currently a “picturesque setting comprising vines and landscaping” which slopes down revealing “magnificent views” of the valley towards Jackson Creek. “The form of the buildings will minimise height and step down the hill to avoid adversely impacting local views and character,” the application stated. “Turf terraces and planted roofs will create the impression that the hotel building is emerging from the landscape rather than being an object trespassing on it.” However resident John Callaghan has
expressed concern that the proposed development would “impact on the actual vista of the area”. “It’s impossible for a development of that size to not stand out like a sore thumb,” he said. Mr Callaghan said it would be a “massive overdevelopment” in what locals now refer to as “the beautiful gateway to Sunbury”. Mr Callaghan also raised concern about the historic homestead on the property. A 2016 Heritage Impact Statement identified the Goona Warra homestead and winery as a place of individual significance. While the plans propose to retain the bluestone buildings, Mr Callaghan said they will be “dwarfed” by the new construction. The winery’s owners declined to comment to
Star Weekly, but their application highlighted the new facilities, increased tourism and local employment opportunities as benefits of the project stating: “The proposal will provide hotel accommodation and a high-end tourist and function facility, which is currently lacking in the surrounding area”. Hume council planning and development director Kevin Walsh said the council would consider all objections received. “Council is still in the process 2 of Y assessing EARS LED this application on its merits,” Mr Walsh said. Call for Sunbury carpark action Sunbury’s Business Association has expressed “extreme concern” about Hume council’s “inability” to solve the town’s carparking issues. Last week the association made a submission to the council’s draft 2017-18 budget, asking that it allocate funding to fix the parking problems in Sunbury’s town centre. There were no funds allocated to investigate parking in the council’s draft budget, released on May 8. In it’s submission the Sunbury Business
Association (SBA) highlighted the impact a lack of parking had on residents, businesses and the community. It claimed many shoppers travelled to retail centres outside of Sunbury to avoid the town’s congestion. “Feedback from SBA members, the Sunbury business community, shoppers from Sunbury and surrounding regions, and the general public, is that impacts are widespread,” SBA president Michael Osborne wrote. “Every day, more local and regional income is being spent outside of Sunbury.”

The association also raised concerns that the parking issues would only get worse as the population grew. According to the Sunbury South Precinct Structure Plan, another 33,000 residents are expected to move into Sunbury. Mr Osborne said “it [didn’t] make sense” to
plan for population growth while infrastructure was limited. At its June 13 meeting the council agreed to investigate what long-term and short-term parking was available in the Sunbury town centre as part of its 2017-18 Local Area Traffic Management Study. The council will also write to Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan to discuss parking issues. Hume’s 2017-18 budget was expected to be adopted on Monday, after Star Weekly went to print.

Humans are not the only locals who benefit from the work of our police. Last week Sunbury police officers came to the rescue of Wilbur the young joey. After receiving reports that a kangaroo had been hit by a car, Leading Senior Constable Peter Canning and Constable Helena Perkins attended the incident at the intersection of Racecourse Road and Webb Court in Sunbury. Unfortunately, the kangaroo did not survive her injuries, but her joey was found shivering nearby. The officers took the joey, dubbed ‘Wilbur,’ to Sunbury Police Station where he was retrieved by wildlife rescuers. An assessment confirmed Wilbur bounced back from the collision, not sustaining any injuries. He is expected to grow to be strong and healthy. “It’s important if people see injured wildlife that they contact Wildlife Victoria or their local police station,” Constable Perkins said. “Without that phone call from a concerned local, little Wilbur wouldn’t have been found.” Wildlife Victoria: 1300 094 535

Gisborne origami artist Chieko Hester will model her creations in The Gallery Mt Macedon’s Wearable Art Parade. Hester is one of more than 20 artists who will showcase their original Art to Wear pieces. Curated by the Macedon Ranges Arts Collective, the fashion parade will showcase unique garments, scarves, hats and jewellery. Hester will wear her origami earrings and pendants in the show. But jewellery is not her main body of work. Hester typically produces origami pieces which she displays in shadow boxes. She said she created jewellery as an alternative way for customers to appreciate her Japanese style. “For some people, if they don’t want Japanese pieces in their houses, they can wear Japanese works,” she said. Some of Hester’s pieces are exhibited in The Gallery Mt Macedon, and she takes many of her artworks to Japanese festivals. A day out in Parliament She may be only 12 years old but Lancefield’s Chloe Hansen is off to participate in a parliamentary sitting alongside members of Parliament. Chloe is the recipient of the 2017 MP for a Day award from local youth group The Field Trip and Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas. Chloe said she was eagerly awaiting her day in the shoes of a member of Parliament. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do ever since I heard about it,” she said. “I’m really interested in getting an insight into how it all works.” Learning about politics and leadership is just one of Chloe’s many interests – she also enjoys reading, writing, performing on stage, football, tennis and swimming.
Chloe has been involved with weekly youth movement The Field Trip since it started up in Riddells Creek in 2015. Through this group she has produced podcasts for radio, built a cubby house at the Woodend Men’s Shed for charity, had some of her work published in a book, helped run a weekend retreat for senior citizens and produced her own Youtube channel YouFood, sharing clips about healthy eating. Chloe said she enjoyed discovering her potential across different fields. “I’m learning that the world around me doesn’t just have one path set out for me – but many.” Serena Seyfort

Anger over Kyneton growth plan By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges residents have slammed the council’s investigation into residential growth in Kyneton South, saying it is unnecessary. Macedon Ranges Residents Association Inc (MRRA) took to social media last week, urging locals to ask the council to stop the “premature” Draft Kyneton South Framework Plan. The council plan was available for public viewing and comment until Friday. It looks at 310 hectares of land south of
Campaspe River and its potential to be used for medium to long-term (10-20 year) residential growth. The area was first identified for possible medium to long-term growth in the council’s Kyneton South Structure Plan, which was adopted in June, 2013. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said the framework plan was only a “preliminary investigation”. “It’s saying, if [the area] was going to be residential, what would Kyneton need?” Cr Anderson said.
But MRRA said there was “no justification or need to investigate or rezone any more land”. “[The plan] is grossly premature, and incomplete, pre-empts agreement or even discussion with community and is excessive to the shire’s Settlement for Kyneton,” the association posted on its website. MRRA said the plan had “missed a step” – as the community had not been asked whether they supported expansion of Kyneton to the extent outlined in the plan. “The framework plan shows a vastly
expanded town boundary for Kyneton, which no one has been told about,” MRRA wrote. A council report in 2011 stated that Kyneton could accommodate a population growth of about 2900 people without the need to rezone any additional land until 2036. Responding to residents’ concerns about “resources being wasted” on the plan, Cr Anderson said it was funded by $60,000 allocated in the council’s 2016-17 budget. She said the council would take on board residents’ feedback.
Talking up Koori culture Award-winning Indigenous author Bruce Pascoe is joining the Macedon Ranges to celebrate NAIDOC Week (July 2-9). To mark the national week of recognition for the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Pascoe will speak at the John Morieson Oration night. The accomplished author will discuss his latest award-winning work Dark Emu, which presents a radically different view of Australia’s first people as hunter gatherers. Through extracts of early explorer’s journals and records, Pascoe asserts that Aboriginal people were engineering sophisticated dwellings and irrigation systems across the continent. The evening honours Mr Morieson, an academic of Aboriginal history and cosmology, social activist for Indigenous education and member of Macedon Ranges Reconciliation Group.

Dog puts bite on forest fugitives By Serena Seyfort
Magic chance for leadership This Woodend teenager is following her desire to make a mark on the world. Polly Reid is heading to the 2017 Magic Moments Youth Leadership Summit in Sydney this weekend, to arm herself with leadership strategies. She was selected to attend the five-day camp that empowers youth to turn their passion into action by her sponsor, Bendigo Bank’s Gisborne branch. Polly said she was looking forward to the summit, particularly the chance to hear the ideas of other young people motivated to lead. “It is so exciting to be given the opportunity to gain skills that will enable me to make a real difference,” Polly said. As year 11 captain at her school, Gisborne Secondary College, Polly represents her peers in discussions with teachers, and helps to organise and co-ordinate events. She said she has always had a keen interest in politics, along with art, history, netball and German. “I think politics is one of the areas where you can really make a difference,” Polly said.

Two men were seized by a police dog in a Macedon pine forest after driving into oncoming traffic on the Calder Freeway. Following a police chase that involved two helicopters from the police air wing last week, a 22-year-old from Fish Creek and a 29-year-old from Wonthaggi were hospitalised for dog bites. Acting Sergeant Jamie Jordan said the men were wanted for a series of offences in Victoria and New South Wales, including ramming police vehicles in Wonthaggi. He said when police tried to intercept the men as they drove on the Calder Freeway near Elphinstone, the driver took off on the wrong side of the freeway. Police tracked the vehicle by air as it drove through country roads into Kyneton. Spikes were deployed on Black Forest Drive in Woodend to stop the car. With two deflated tyres, the vehicle again entered the wrong side of the Calder Freeway before the men abandoned the car and fled into the Macedon pine plantation. The chase ended when they were caught separately by a police dog. Soon afterwards, a 22-year-old woman who had been a passenger in the vehicle turned herself into police. The chase began about 6.30pm. Three people were taken into police custody just before 9pm. All three have each been charged with a range of offences and are awaiting court dates. The two men have been remanded and the woman has been bailed. Police said four illegal firearms were later found in the vehicle.

SPORT Tigers claw back victory By Tara Murray Kyneton got a much-needed win and knocked off an old rival in the process in the Bendigo Football League on Saturday. The Tigers had lost their past three games and, having been on the top of the ladder early in the season, had slipped out of the top five in recent weeks. It meant their match against Gisborne already a big occasion between the only two Macedon Ranges teams in the competition – got even bigger. Kyneton coach Luke Beattie said there was a lot of passion early in the game, which reminded him of the historic rivalries between the two neighbouring sides. He said it was good to see. Early on Beattie wasn’t happy as his side struggled and Gisborne made a contest of it. However the Tigers got their act together in the second half, kicking away to win 17.13 (115)-9.10 (64). While it had been a great contest in the first half for those watching the game, Beattie said his side had wasted the ball. “We played poorly,” he said. “We turned it over too many times. That was the key difference between the first and the second half. “We looked at getting the ball in the hands of the better-equipped footballers for greater periods of time in the second half. “Gisborne dropped off and we were able to capitalise. It was good to get a good win as you don’t know whether percentage will come into play later in the season.” Max O’Sullivan kicked five goals for the Tigers, but Beattie said he, like most of the playing group, played a game of two halves. Beattie said Josh Govan and Michael Clancy were the exceptions, with both playing really good four-quarter games. The win leaves the Tigers two points outside the top five. Beattie said they were clearly focused on making the finals, as they had for the past two years. Having had a draw and three losses by seven points or under, Beattie knows they can match it with most, if not every, team in the competition. He said more than luck would come into play. “Luck is a perceived outcome from a repetitive nature and effort. If we can keep that up for longer periods of times [we will win] and most of those [future] games against the sides we had close losses to are at our home ground, which is a real advantage. “They need to keep doing the things we ask of them … we need to make the second half of the season better than the first half. “If we stay the same, we don’t play finals.” For the Bulldogs, Jake Conolan kicked three goals. Jack Reaper was named the Bulldogs best player. The Bulldogs remain seventh on the ladder, 10 points behind the Tigers.
Bombers set a winning pace The race for finals spots in the Riddell District Football League is heating up. After the favourites won most games in the first half of the season, surprise results and close finishes are becoming more frequent. Riddell has been the big mover, winning its past four games. After a big win against Romsey the previous round, the Bombers knocked off a team above them for a second straight week by defeating Sunbury Kangaroos. The Bombers made the most of their shots on goal to lead at every break in the 11.6 (72)-7.15 (57) win. Bombers coach Jamie Elliott admitted the Kangaroos’ poor kicking in front of goal was a blessing, but praised his side’s pressure. “Our pressure against Romsey was terrific for the whole game and it just followed on from there,” he said. He said pressure was the main difference in the side in the past month, compared to earlier in the season. He said that was coming with more experience, with the club fielding one of the youngest senior teams. At least 15 players have played their first senior games this season. “That’s unheard of,” Elliott said. “Ben Radford has just turned 16 and Harry Power is 18. Lachlan Henson can still play under-18s. Liam Read, Jack Hickey and Brad Collins are all still young. “Players like Micky Sahlberg haven’t played a lot of senior football. It’s a feather in the cap of the club – these guys deserve to play senior football. “The experienced players are playing well and the younger guys are following.” Haydn Ross, Tommy Alkemade and Matthew Panuccio kicked two goals each for the Bombers. Panuccio was named their best. The win has put the Bombers in sixth spot, only percentage behind fifth-placed Sunbury Kangaroos. Elliott said that despite improved performances in recent weeks, the goal had remained the same. “We don’t talk about finals, but we’d love to play finals as we are a proud club,” he said. “If we can get the balance right and get into finals, we could scare a few clubs.” Romsey sits outside the top six on percentage after beating Woodend-Hesket. Sunbury Lions take a timely win streak into the bye Sunbury Lions have placed themselves nicely heading into their first bye of the Ballarat Football League season. The Lions have won their past four games and are fourth on the ladder with a 6-4 record, having only weeks ago been 2-4. For Lions coach Ben Jordan, fourth seems about where the Lions should be. He said his players had worked hard to get there. On Saturday, the Lions had to work hard to clinch their fourth straight win. Only in the last 15 minutes were the Lions able to break City to win 11.8 (74)-6.14 (50). Jordan said one of the biggest challenges for the Lions heading into the game was the mental preparation. “I always thought mentally it would be a tough challenge for us – going up to Ballarat the last four weeks and coming back home against a side which really had nothing to lose,” he said. “I thought they were really good all day. Our boys were a bit off – there’s no doubt about that – but we worked our way through it, which was good. “To run the game out well and finish the game off is a positive, even if I thought we were a bit lucky to win by that sort of margin.”
The match-winning move for the Lions was shifting David Kovacevic up forward midway through the last quarter. Kovacevic, who had spent the day in the ruck and as the sweeper across half-back, kicked two goals and brought the ball to ground to set up a third goal in the last 15 minutes. Jordan said they needed to try a different option up forward, with City shutting down Ben Said, who had kicked four goals. “That’s the flexibility a guy like ‘Kova’ gives you,” Jordan said. “He has played a lot of the game on ball and he’s still fresh enough to play that role up forward. “If he gets it one on one, he’s hard to beat. The two kicks for goal were beautiful kicks.”
Alec Goodson kicked four goals for the Lions, while midfielders Greg Hay and Tom Donoghue were again strong. Defender Adam Short returned from injury for the Lions and got through the game in a bonus outcome. Andrew Duahu hurt a calf in the third quarter and didn’t return to the field as a precautionary measure. Jordan said the win would give some confidence to the side, which had been struggling to close out close games. The Lions have a bye this week before taking on Melton South. Tara Murray

Ripper upset has Sharks aiming higher Rupertswood pulled off the first real big upset of the Riddell District Netball League season with a comprehensive win against Lancefield. The Tigers entered the game as favourites having lost only one match for the season, and only by one goal, while the Sharks had struggled against the sides above them on the ladder. Sharks coach Di McCormack thought if they could come away with a competitive performance, and maybe even sneak a close win, she would have been happy. So she didn’t see the start-to-finish 55-41 win coming. In the end, the margin could have been bigger if the Sharks hadn’t switched their combinations around in the last quarter. “I thought we could give them a good run,” McCormack said. “The last two weeks we’ve just clicked. Everything we’ve been working on is starting to come together and our combinations are coming together. It was a real good team performance.”
McCormack said the shooting combination of Hayley Mathews and Amy Starzer had been building each week. Mathews shot 31 goals and Starzer 24 goals in the win, with both girls shooting 80 per cent or higher. “Hayley has really matured this season,” McCormack said. “Amy back at goal shooter, controls the circle, and Hayley is feeding really well off her.” At the other end, Clare Johnson stepped up in the absence of Jess Dominko, who is out with a knee injury. The previous week, Lara Keating was able to do the same job. Having beaten sides above them on the ladder, Melton Centrals and Lancefield, in the past two weeks, McCormack is starting to re-adjust her expectations for the season. The Sharks are in fourth spot. “I didn’t think we would finish higher than fifth this year,” she said. “If we could finish third, that would be really good. We do have a
tough draw and we’ll find out in the next few weeks where we sit. “We play Diggers Rest this week, then have Macedon and Romsey, who are the top-two teams. In the games we’ve had against them, it’s been 10-goal margins, which have only blown out because of two or three mistakes in one quarter.” For the Tigers, Taylah Watson was their best in the loss to Rupertswood and Tahnysha Salanoa shot 23 goals. While the Sharks’ A-grade side snared a surprise victory, the B-grade side didn’t win for the first time since round 16, 2015. It settled for a draw with Lancefield. In other A-grade matches, Macedon remained undefeated after defeating Melton Centrals, Riddell beat Sunbury Kangaroos, Diggers Rest returned to the winners’ list against Rockbank and Romsey smashed Woodend-Hesket. Jets back on winning list By Tara Murray Sunbury Jets returned to the winners list in the Big V women’s state championship division on Saturday night. After winning their first 11 games, the Jets dropped their next two and slipped back to the pack. On Saturday night, the Jets responded with a comprehensive win against Diamond Valley. After a slow start the Jets found their groove late in the first quarter to lead by four points at quarter time. The Jets stepped it up defensively in the second and third quarters, and midway way through the third quarter led by 26 points. Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama looked to his bench at that stage, giving some other players a run with the game in hand. The Jets ended up winning 75-56. Kereama said it was a satisfying team win after having lost their previous two matches. “Chelsea [Burns] played injured and Orla [O’Reilly] took a pretty good knock to the head on Tuesday, so we’re battling,” he said. “It’s good to get a win like that when you’re also down Courtney [Duever]. It’s satisfying when your bench really lifts and rises to the occasion. “It was a really a solid team win.” Defensively was where the game was won for the Jets, with the Eagles finding it difficult to score for chunks of the game. They forced the Eagles to shoot from deep and it worked in their favour with the Eagles not hitting a three-pointer until early in the final quarter. “We’ve got a bit of a funky zone which seems to cause teams a lot of trouble,” Kereama said. “I think they were 0-14 from the three point line going into the last quarter ... it didn’t help their cause and while they weren’t shooting the ball well we were going to stick with what was working for us.” O’Reilly was the standout for the Jets with 26 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Most of her points came in the first half. Kereama also had praise for Monique Stevens who rebounded from a poor game the previous round and Rebecca Van Kuyk, who has started in the absence of Duever. With no Duever in the line up for a second straight week, it’s given Kereama the chance to look at different line-ups. Every Jets player that suited up took to the court. Kereama said he expected Duever, who is averaging 23 points and 10 rebounds, back this week. The Jets will then lose Kereama and Josie Stockill with New Zealand national team duties. Both will be back for finals if the Jets make them. “We’ve trained for some situations and obviously Josie being out [with foul trouble]

Kyneton finds its feet Kyneton continues to develop nicely in the Northern Country Women’s Football League. After struggling in their first two seasons, the Tigers are flourishing. In round two they claimed their first win and it’s been the start of some pleasing form. They have now won two games and were handed the points in a third because the opposition played an unregistered player, to sit sixth with a 3-4 record after seven rounds. Tigers’ coach Ben Muir is thrilled with how the side is starting to build. “We’re getting new girls coming into the club every fortnight,” he said before the weekend’s match against Benalla. “There’s been some unbelievable development from the first-year players.” Muir said the excitement from the players when they were starting to get wins was good to watch. On Sunday, the Tigers lost to second-placed Benalla Saints. The Saints kicked the only three goals of the first quarter and the Tigers couldn’t pin them back, losing 7.14 (56)-3.2 (20). Matilda Maidment kicked two goals for the Tigers, while co-captain Natalie Korinfsky was named their best. Muir said the focus for the rest of the season is to continue developing. While the Tigers would like to play finals, they are two games outside the top four. “It’s very positive how far the girls have come this year,” Muir said. “The team has clicked together and is running nicely. “We’ll keep working on things, such as a goalkicking – we seem to kick more points than goals. “We’ve asked [former AFL player] Nathan Thompson to come down and give the girls a hand with goalkicking practice.” In other women’s football, the two Sunbury teams both had good wins. In the AFL Goldfields competition the Sunbury Kangaroos defeated Ballarat 7.8 (50)-3.10 (28) in division 1. Bailee Said kicked three goals in a best on ground performance. In the Western Region and Essendon District Women’s Football League, the Sunbury Lions smashed Pascoe Vale 16.11 (107)-1.2 (8). Brooke Surgeon was the standout, kicking six goals. Bulldogs build for finals By Tara Murray Half way through the Bendigo Netball League season and Gisborne is exactly where it wants to be – among the contenders. The Bulldogs sit second on the ladder, four points behind Sandhurst, who they drew with last week. Bulldogs coach Guy Keane said his side was building nicely. “We are travelling really well having hit the halfway mark of the season and we have to make sure we keep on building,� he said. “The top five is really close and it will come down to whoever is playing the best netball on the day that will get the win. “We need to make sure we’re playing our best netball in the second half of the season.� On Saturday, the Bulldogs accounted for Kyneton 67-32. Despite the comprehensive score, Keane said the match was much closer than what the score showed. “Kyneton has really improved from the first time we played them,� he said. “The score didn’t reflect the match and we didn’t take them lightly. “We put our netball brand on the court and blew the game out at the end.� Keane said skipper Maddy Stewart, along with youngsters Melinda Luke and Keara Fitzgerald were the standouts. “The win came off really good defence,� he said. “That’s the best overall combination we’ve had from them. Our attacking end did a really good job as well.� Keane said there were positive signs heading into the future with Fitzgerald and Luke still young enough to play under-17s. He said Holly Doricic, another under-17 player, would get her opportunity the next few weeks, with several players on holidays.

Thunder rolls out the wins East Sunbury’s run of good form has continued with the Thunder winning their fourth straight match in Essendon District Football League division 2. Last week the Thunder made it three straight wins for the first time in the club’s history. Facing a struggling Roxburgh Park on Saturday, they fancied their chances of a fourth straight victory. After leading at quarter-time, the Thunder trailed by nine points at half-time and 10 points at the last break in what was shaping up as a close match. The Thunder kicked five goals in the final quarter, having only kicked six in the first three quarters, to storm home for an 11.10 (76)-9.7 (61) win. Tom Burnside continued his good form, kicking four goals. It’s the third straight week he’s kicked at least four goals. Kabalan Mokbel was named best on ground, while Lucas Shaw and Diquan Williams were also standouts for the Thunder. The win moves the Thunder into the top four. It’s the best place the Thunder have ever been at this point of the season in the club’s history. They take on Jacana on Saturday for the second time in less than a month.The Thunder won the last match-up against the top-four side convincingly.
