Mini train out of steam By Esther Lauaki New Gisborne’s miniature trains come off the rails next month, hit by high insurance premiums and the demands of volunteer life on busy families. Gisborne Vintage Machinery Society vice-president Tim Reid has run the trains as part of a children’s party business from the society’s Calder Freeway grounds for the past six years. He’s the one responsible for the old Melbourne tram that’s become a roadside attraction for the society’s annual steam rally.
Mr Reid said the past six years have been a great adventure, but high costs and time pressures have forced him out. “When I joined the Gisborne Vintage Machinery Society, I set out to restore the train line, and enable children and families to enjoy the miniature train park,” Mr Reid said. “It’s been a wonderful ride, with lots of birthday cakes, parties and kids having fun. “Many families have enjoyed their celebrations at the park but sadly, due to time pressures, having a young family myself, we’ve had to make the hard decision to close. “Our hand was also forced by very high
insurance rates, making it prohibitive,” he said. “On behalf of my family, I would like to say a big thank-you to the community, to the vintage machinery society and Macedon Ranges council for enabling us to operate.” Mr Reid said the track and the miniature train will stay at the park, and he hopes the society will be able to raise enough funds to get them back on the tracks again one day. But, sadly, the SW 897 tram has to go. Mr Reid said the historic carriage does come with a hefty price tag, after so many hours spent in its meticulous restoration, but it would make a great backyard bar, playroom or sewing room.
“Putting a price on an item like this is hard to quantify, but due to the unique nature of it, we would hope to get around $10,000,” he said. “We are looking for someone to not only purchase it, but to continue its preservation … and to look after this rare piece of iconic Melbourne history. “The opportunities for the tram are endless and would only be limited by one’s imagination … and available space to accommodate it. “We’ve had a lot of interest thus far, even from as far as Dubai.” Locals have one last chance to bid the trains bon route on May 21 at the 2017 steam rally.

Macedon Ranges emergency service volunteers will get improved facilities thanks to more than $60,000 in government grants. Woodend State Emergency Service volunteers will receive more than $20,000 in upgrades to the land around the station and a new outdoor training area courtesy of the latest round of the government’s Emergency Services Volunteer Sustainability Grants program. Woodend Country Fire Authority will receive about $6000 for shelving and lockers. Gisborne SES and Lancefield and Romsey fire brigardes also received funding in the latest round with a total of $62,274 in grants going to emergency services in the Ranges. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said that hundreds of applications for equipment, communications, facility upgrades and community engagement and training were already being considered for the next round of allocations. “These grants will assist emergency volunteers … in the crucial work they do in keeping the community safe,” she said. One of Sunbury’s most high profile crash survivors has been asked to front a new social media road safety campaign. Young netballer Bethany Wragg was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital with life-threatening injuries on July 4 last year. Police said at the time a ute had veered onto the wrong side of Dalrymple Road and collided head-on with her blue Mazda. The 21-year-old spent two weeks in intensive care before being moved to the neurological ward in an induced coma, where she stayed for two months. Short, hard-hitting video messages will be recorded for the #5SecondSafety campaign to encourage safer driving. The series of messages delivered by survivors, their families, medical professionals and emergency service volunteers asks Victorians what they are going to do about road safety. Bethany’s mum Mary said her daughter suffered serious brain injuries and was in hospital for six months. “A lot of her brain was affected, so they didn’t know how she would come out of the coma – or if she would.” “I don’t remember any of it,” Bethany said. “I don’t even remember that I was driving.” Sunbury’s sports community banded together and launched a crowdfunding campaign after the crash, raising nearly $30,000 to help with Bethany’s medical costs. Bethany’s most immediate goals are to be able to sing again, which she has not done since the accident – and she has her sights set on entering the Melbourne marathon in October. Macedon Ranges council has called for state government help to fund female-friendly change rooms at sports centres around the shire. Its request was part of a joint submission to Rural Councils Victoria, alongside 38 other councils, to boost funding for essential services and infrastructure projects. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said rate-capping and population growth are putting rural councils under pressure to deliver more services and manage assets with fewer resources. Teen triathlete on track Kyneton teen Ruben DeSilva-Smith only started competing in triathlons a year ago – but he’s on a fast track to glory. The 14-year-old qualified second in the state to enter the Australian Schools Triathlon Festival, which starts on Thursday, April 20, in Sydney. It has been an eventful 12 months for DeSilva-Smith having secured a spot as short-course champion in club competition at Bendigo Triathlon Club, then placing second in the under 14 boys’ event during the Gatorade Triathlon Series at St Kilda in January. But he says he never thought he would be competing for Victoria when he started. “I just liked riding my bike and getting outdoors a lot,” he says.
“If you asked me a year ago if I’d be competing in triathlon, I would have told you, no. I probably would have stuck to doing club competitions. “I’ve made heaps of friends through triathlon, and I’m really excited to be going to nationals – I’m not nervous.” He sticks to a stringent training regime these days, including two swims, two rides and two runs a week, and gym sessions every other day. “I hope to go far in triathlon and start competing in more national and international competitions.” Mum Louise is very proud, and says she has high hopes for her son’s future. Brewery crafts a niche in tourism By Esther Lauaki A bold new makeover and expansion is on the cards for Woodend’s Holgate Brewery as the state government looks to the craft beer business to keep the froth on tourism in the Macedon Ranges. The family-owned microbrewery will build a new discovery centre dedicated to brewing, and a brewhouse showroom for tourists, courtesy of a $1.5 million state grant. Paul and Natasha Holgate quit their corporate jobs to turn their food and beverages passion into a backyard brewery in 1999.
They now sell a range of renowned craft beers out of the 19th century red-brick former Keatings hotel in Woodend’s main street, attracting nearly 70,000 visitors to the town each year. Ms Holgate said the project will improve the visitor experience by incorporating a museum, a merchandise outlet, accommodation check-in service and a tasting room. It’s hoped that by capitalising on the fast-growing interest in food, wine and craft beers, visitor numbers to the brewery should double to about 125,000 within five years, she said.
Mr Holgate said the expansion would also help the couple expand exports overseas. “What the craft brewing industry is about worldwide is quality and flavour, over quantity,” he said. “We want to get consumers in touch with beer-making, the ingredients and raw materials.” Premier Daniel Andrews travelled to Woodend with Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas for last Wednesday’s announcement. Mr Andrews said the upgrade would create 15 local jobs and mean a major increase in brewing capacity.
“We’re proud to back a project that means more local jobs and more local tourism. “This redevelopment will draw about 125,000 visitors to the region, sampling the finest brews and experiencing the very best that the Macedon Ranges has to offer,” he said. The premier also announced government funding for Broo, Forrest Brewing Company and the Australian Craft Beer Centre of Excellence. The funds come from the government’s regional tourism and infrastructure fund, which backs regional tourism ventures that generate tourism opportunities.
Walk tall for Asperger’s Lainee Thorne has taken more than 80,000 steps for a cause that’s close to her heart. The 11-year-old from Digger Rest set herself a challenge to walk at least 10,000 steps a day over eight days as part of this month’s Walk for Autism. Lainee wants to raise awareness about Asperger’s – a syndrome she has been diagnosed with, as has her brother, Joshua. Lainee has raised more than $1300 through an Everyday Hero crowdfunding campaign. “I wanted to help make a difference for others – like my brother, Joshua, and myself,” she wrote in a post. “My family is surrounded by many wonderful, supportive people. “I’m inspired by the work of Autism Spectrum Australia and wanted to support them by raising money by taking part in Walk for Autism 2017.”
The walk is Autism Spectrum Australia’s main fundraising appeal each year, a time to raise awareness about a condition that affects one in every 100 Australians. Lainee says she was encouraged by friends, mentors and under 12 basketball teammates at Sunbury Jets, with whom she’s played for two seasons. “The more people that know about Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect), the greater their impact … so, please, spread the word.” Mum Ann says she was happy to walk beside Lainee every step of the way. “I’m very proud of her and her decision to do the walk, and putting herself out there to raise awareness about Asperger’s is not an easy thing to do. Coach is back to business By Tara Murray Jessy Carroll is determined to continue the work he started as East Sunbury’s senior cricket coach – before his battle with cancer. Carroll, who was appointed coach of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association side last year, had to step back in the second half of the season after being diagnosed with stage four non-Hodgkin’s B-cell lymphoma. Earlier this year, he was given just four weeks to live. But support from the local community allowed Carroll to afford a drug which has had success in treating melanoma. After just two treatments Carroll’s scans showed he was in remission.

With his health under control, Carroll wants to focus on helping the East Sunbury B-grade side return to finals and get back to the form that earned him a reputation as one of the competition’s best all-rounders. “It’s good they’ve [East Sunbury] shown some faith in me,” he said. “The guys who run the club said it’s a two-year deal, and you’ve only really done half a season. “I laid down the platform and the boys who took over continued doing what I started. “Hopefully, this year is a lot smoother.” Carroll said there had been a lot of positive signs in the season just gone, which the club had seen as a time to build. “We only had five wins but I don’t think it was a reflection of our season,” he said.

“We knocked the premiers [Lancefield] off twice, and quite comfortably. “It takes time to gel together. Sunday’s Big V games will be more than just about the wins for Sunbury Jets. The association will pay tribute to former and serving members of Australian defence forces, with both Jets’ senior teams playing in charity games ahead of Anzac Day. Money raised by the matches will go towards the Anzac Day appeal. Sunbury RSL members will be selling badges at the stadium during the matches, and also on the Saturday, while the association’s junior domestic competition is under way. Players from both the state championship women’s side and division 1 men’s side will wear special commemorative uniforms, with the club to auction them off afterwards. All money raised at the auction will be donated to the RSL effort. The Jets’ undefeated women’s side will play the Warrandyte Venom at noon, while the men’s side, which sits 1-3, plays Melbourne Uni Black Angels, starting at 2pm. Women’s coach and association coaching director Kennedy Kereama said the memorial matches were a way of giving thanks for the sacrifices made by defence force members and their families. Bids for the uniforms can be made on the association’s website and social media pages. The reserve price of each uniform is $50. The auction closes on April 26.

SPORT Tigers add grunt to attack in bid for finals Lancefield is hoping a familiar squad and more continuity will help its return to Riddell District Netball League A-grade finals. The Tigers added a number of players last season, and while it looked like a good side on paper, getting all players on court at the one time proved difficult. This meant the Tigers missed out on finals by one game in a disappointing result. Tigers’ coach Alan Watson said they had managed to keep most of last year’s team together and at this stage most players will be available every week. As for other sides in the competition, he said Lancefield would benefit from a different structure to the Victorian Netball League competition, which has less Saturday night games. This caused players to miss RDNL games last season.
“The majority of players will be available on a regular basis,” Watson said. “It will make a big difference. We’re not getting ahead of ourselves, but we’re expecting a strong performance in A-grade. We’ve taken a low-key approach, and are confident we will improve in all grades.” As well as keeping most players, Lancefield has added a few more to strengthen the attacking end. Victorian under-age representative Tahnysha Salanoa joins the Tigers a year later than planned, while Stacey Gannon, who played a few games for the Tigers last season, will play more often this season. Salanoa, who also plays for VNL club City West Falcons, shot 46 goals, while Gannon shot seven goals and also played on a wing.

Watson said he expected all four sides to be stronger this year with the club, especially president Leanne Blackwell, putting in a lot of hard work behind the scenes. “We had a record number of people turn out to tryouts,” he said. “It gives you a headache trying to fit 15-plus players into teams, and others having to miss out. We’re starting to get the results of the culture we’ve built. We’re aiming for finals in all four grades.” The Tigers’ next round of matches is on April 22, when all four teams play Rockbank. Romsey and Melton Centrals are the only teams to play this week, with their A-grade sides playing in a stand-alone match on Thursday night. Tara Murray

As the Victorian Netball League season kicks off next week, many netballers are preparing themselves for a few months of juggling commitments. A growing number of Riddell District Netball League players and coaches are doubling up their netball commitments, involved in both VNL and local competitions. AFL Goldfields netball manager Kim Bailey has seen first hand the talent that’s coming through, not just from the RDNL, but also the Ballarat and Maryborough-Castlemaine netball leagues. Bailey, who is also in her third season as coach of Ballarat Sovereigns’ division one VNL side, said it was pleasing to see so much talent coming forth. “We’re looking to bring players through from RDFL to Sovereigns,” she said. “With the affiliation between Sovereigns and AFL Goldfields, it’s something we wanted to look to for all our leagues,” she said. “There are a lot of VNL players who play in the RDNL, in particular. “If we can find these girls through the RDNL, we can get them to go through the pathways and press on.” Bailey said Sovereigns were wanting to identify players from a young age and help them progress through the system. Sunbury Lions’ Keara Fitzgerald is one such player. She’s been part of the Sovereigns under-19 side for the last two years. Last season, she was playing under-15s at the Lions. “We’re even got to the point where whoever
wins the best and fairest and the other top two or three vote-getters from each league get invited to trials,” Bailey said. “We bring them through that way and identify them early, before someone else does.” This season, Sovereigns have five RDNL players on the combined championship/ division 1 squad – Romsey’s Cayley Armstrong and Danni Davidson, Lancefield’s Anica Scherer and Macedon duo Chloe Wilson and Janelle Birch. Birch and Wilson, were identified as possible Sovereigns players by Bailey in last year’s RDNL season. “I looked at them over the finals series and over the year, and thought we could do something with them – we just maybe tweak some of the features of their games as it’s going up another level,” she said. “We’ve done a really intensive preseason this season … it really showed off in a practice match against Monash. “They say never in a million years did they think they would be playing VNL, but they are good enough to … it’s not only us at Sovereigns who get better, but also the RDNL.” While Bailey has a connection with the Sovereigns, she’s not alone in having a coaching involvement in the VNL. Rupertswood’s Di McCormack, Riddell’s Eliza Allen and Lancefield’s Alan Watson all coach RDNL sides while staying involved with coaching at VNL clubs. Melton Centrals’ coach Randy Pereira is on the board at Melbourne University Lightning. “It’s great for our league that we’re so close to Melbourne, and it’s a great option to come to the RDNL,” Bailey said.

Meanwhile, in Riddell District Football Netball League, Romsey and Melton Centrals faced off Thursday night. Tigers turn to youth brigade By Tara Murray Kyneton coach Luke Beattie wants to build on his side’s Bendigo Football League finals appearances of the past two years. The Tigers finished fifth the past two seasons, but didn’t progress past the first week of finals. Beattie said while the focus is on continuing to improve, success in finals is something they are aspiring for. “For us, it’s about the consistency in football, and the results will take care of themselves,” he said. “My pre-season desire is to improve on the situation of the last two years, which has been outstanding, given our recent history. “We’re looking to win a finals game this season. I think we are capable of doing it.” Beattie said there had been encouraging signs during the off season. “It doesn’t seem to have gone as slow this time,” said Beattie, who took over coaching midway through 2015. “It will be an interesting season. I’m certainly happy with how they’ve trained, and especially happy with the new players.” The Tigers side this season will be a younger set to what they had envisaged. Former skipper Michael Rainey, Ryan Carafa and former AFL forward Nathan Thompson have retired. Jarrod Andreatta, Nick Higginson, Leigh Warne and Jarrod Witnish – who spent last year at the Tigers after coming across from Mitcham – have moved to Phillip Island. “We didn’t plan to have a younger list, it just
evolved that way. It will have a range of benefits – there’s a lot of enthusiasm and intensity across the board,” Beattie said. “There will be some indifferent football though, but we will try and limit it.” Michael Clancy, Billy Mahony, Harrison Mulqueen, Kevin Clark and Nick and Fintan Brazil all joined the Tigers, with Beattie saying they have settled in so well they don’t feel like new recruits. Several under-18 players will also get opportunities in the senior side. Beattie said there would be a six-man leadership group, with the skipper to be decided in the lead-up to round one, which was on Friday. The Tigers started their season against local rivals Gisborne in a match played after Star Weekly’s deadline. Beattie said before the game that playing the Bulldogs on Good Friday was one of the biggest days of the season. “It’s good to have Good Friday football back … we can showcase the game in the Macedon Ranges. “The game is normally entrenched in the schedule, and we missed that last season,” Beattie said. “A lot of people from all parts of the community come to watch.” On the netball side of things, the Tigers will have only two netball teams, A and B grades, competing this season.
