The 13-year-old, who took up running late in 2015, has quickly established himself as one of the fastest 800-metre runners in the country from his age group. $10m health overhaul By Esther Lauaki Ageing health services at Kyneton are earmarked for a $10 million revamp, the state government announced last week. Cobaw Community Health, based in a 90-year-old building in High Street, Kyneton, will oversee the building of a new hub for family and community health as the current service struggles to keep up with central Victoria’s burgeoning population. Cobaw chief executive Margaret McDonald said the expansion, dubbed the Healthy Community Access Hub, would mean better health outcomes for people.

“We have been operating out of a site that has really been lacking, in terms of what we would expect our clients and customers to visit,” Ms McDonald said. She said a number of options are being considered for the revamp. “One option might be that staff may have to decamp from the current site, so that buildings could be demolished and rebuilt – another may be a greenfield site, or we might purchase another site.” Plans for the purpose-built hub combine primary health and community health services, private practitioners and counsellors, and will include more multi-purpose consulting rooms.

“[The new hub] will meet the strong and growing community demand for accessible wrap-around services, addressing the changing needs of a regional population,” she said. “We also have allied health clinicians – from dieticians, physiotherapist, occupational and speech therapists and housing support services.” The new health centre will feature the latest in e-health technology, making it easier for clients to create and change bookings and access care from remote areas of the region. Construction is expected to commence early next year and be complete by late 2019. Health Minister Jill Hennessy, who visited

the clinic last Wednesday with Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas, said the project would be funded through the state’s new regional health infrastructure fund. “In Kyneton, we’re investing [in] a modern ‘one-stop-shop’ for accessing a range of community health services,” Ms Hennessy said. “The new hub will bring together a range of health and family services.” Ms Thomas said the centre would make life easier for patients in and around the Macedon Ranges. “Cobaw Community Health already provides a terrific service,” she said. “This will mean room to grow and expand.”

Honour reclaimed in story, song By Esther Lauaki A Malmsbury woman who made it her mission to nurture her Indigenous language and stories through performing arts has earned a place on this year’s Victorian Honour Roll for Women. Dr Lou Bennett, of the Yorta Yorta and Dja Dja Wurrung people, was one of 25 women inducted onto the honour roll for her contributions and achievements as a musician and performer. Her performance background spans nearly 30 years as a songwriter, musical and artistic director, composer, actor, soundscape and

music designer and educator. As artistic director and chief executive of Black Arm Band, which she co-founded in 2006, Dr Bennett was instrumental in the company’s transformative journey from a one-off project to an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander governed, not-for-profit performing arts company. Dr Bennett said her passion was in reclaiming and regenerating Yorta Yorta language through the arts – which later became the focus of her doctorate studies. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas offered high praise for the honour roll’s latest inductee.

“Dr Bennett is a music legend, as a performer in Tiddas, and through her involvement in the Black Arm Band as performer and artistic director,” Ms Thomas said. “Too often, women’s achievements and contributions are not recognised, despite leaving a lasting impact on their communities. “These women have changed lives and the Victorian Honour Roll pays homage to their work.” This year, an ambassadors and alumni program was launched to raise the profile of women’s leadership in Victoria. Taking the bite out of dental bills A Sunbury dentist believes many families don’t know that they can access bulk-billed oral health services for their children. Sunbury Community Health provides dental care to youngsters between the ages of two and 17 whose families are eligible for funding through the federal government’s child dental benefit scheme. Oral health services manager George Alexander says he wants to make sure Sunbury and Macedon Ranges families know that there

are low-cost services available to them. “The scheme is important because it expands the availability of healthcare systems to those who don’t hold Healthcare cards,” Mr Alexander said. “There is enormous demand for children’s dental services. “But there are statistics that suggest a very small percentage of Australian families avail themselves of dental and medical services because they think they can’t afford it. “The aim for us is to get the message out

Five busy Macedon Ranges train stations will get more car parking to ease what’s becoming a daily scramble for commuter spots. Works recently started on 40 more carparks at Gisborne station, as well as new CCTV cameras and brighter lighting. Public transport minister Jacinta Allan joined Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas at Gisborne last Friday to announce the first of 17 projects at train stations experiencing high growth in passenger numbers. More than 300 new car spaces will be added at Macedon, Clarkefield and Woodend station carparks for growing numbers of commuters to and from Melbourne. Ms Thomas said the state government will install as many as 110 new spaces at the Macedon railway station carpark and 50 new spaces at Clarkefield station. At Woodend, 200 new car spaces will be sealed by December, as well as 100 new spaces at Kyneton. “Our upgrades will deliver 500 spaces at stations across the Macedon electorate and more than 3000 across the state,” Ms Thomas said. New electronic pedestrian crossings will also be installed at station crossings at Kyneton and Clarkefield as part of the Safer Country Crossings program. A Flemington teen has pleaded guilty to killing his friend during a fight over money. Elvis Bogart-Mott, 19, was due to stand trial in a Victorian Supreme Court for the murder of Sunbury man Sam Dunne, 24, but last Monday pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Bogart-Mott will remain in custody and return to court on May 5 for a plea hearing.

Mr Woodfield said his seven bakers work hard each morning to bake the buns before doors open. “My bakers are really experienced, and many of them worked for specialist bakeries befor e coming to Coles,” he says. “A lot of the customers are really surprised at how good the hot cross buns are, and they’ll tell us, ‘these taste amazing’.” He says the secret was in quality ingredients. “We know our customers want to buy Australian, and we are proud our traditional hot cross buns are made with Aussie fruit and flour,” Mr Woodfield says. Police are seeking help after a stolen BMW was set alight in Gisborne early last Thursday. Emergency services were called to a fire at Hobbs Road, about 200 metres from Melton Road, about 7am after a passerby saw flames. Drone catches Bulla tip breaches By Laura Michell Bulla tip operators have been caught out not covering their dumped waste … by an EPA drone. The BTQ Group, which runs the Sunbury Road landfill, has been fined more than $7700 by the Environment Protection Authority after a drone relayed photographs and video footage of extensive areas of exposed waste at the end of a day’s operations at the tip on January 17 this year. EPA metro manager Daniel Hunt said

the tip licence required exposed waste to be covered by at least 30 centimetres of soil to prevent it from being blown beyond the tip boundaries by the elements. Mr Hunt said it was important that waste materials were covered daily to reduce odour, and vermin, and to prevent stormwater contamination and litter impacting on the local environment. EPA officers used the drone as part of its landfill compliance surveillance program. “The footage captured clearly shows multiple operational areas on the premises

with visible waste, such as plastic, concrete, steel and wood, that indicates that it has not been adequately covered at the end of operations for the day, as required under its EPA licence,” Mr Hunt said. “This breach of the company’s EPA licence was avoidable … BTQ Group is well aware of

its licence obligations and, in this case, correct management and monitoring of exposed litter would have avoided the fine.” The BTQ Group was also served with an official warning in January when significant dust was emitted from its landholdings, which is also a breach of its licence. Mr Hunt said the EPA would continue to hold landfill operators accountable for regulatory requirements through its surveillance of tips and landfills. He urged residents to report suspected pollution to the EPA on 1300 372 842.

School in touch with nature Bursts of colour and tactile textures are making for a special sensory garden that has youngsters at Sunbury’s St Anne’s Primary School abuzz. St Anne’s student services and wellbeing leader David Hurn says the garden is accessible for children of all abilities and helps to create an environment where children can learn and flourish. “The garden will be a welcoming space for all visitors, and a great educational resource for the students,” Mr Hurn says. “It will play a big part in our ‘kinda kinder’ program, which is a partnership with Victoria University to help children transition from kinder to primary school.” The garden was built with funds from a Hume council community grant and $2000 from Western Water towards a tank and watering system. Team Lily in for long haul By Esther Lauaki The Riddells Creek sports community wants seven-year-old basketballer Lily De Haas to know they’re all on her team as they gear up for a fun run and family day in her honour. Lily was diagnosed with a brain tumor earlier this year and is still undergoing radiation and chemotherapy at Peter MacCallum cancer centre. Her family is heavily involved with the Riddells Creek junior mixed basketball association – dad Chris is a coach, mum Simone is on the committee, and their children Lily and older siblings Joel and Brianna all play. Mrs De Haas said the tumor affects Lily’s motor skills and balance, and an orthotic has been fitted in her right leg to help her walk again – when she’s ready. “Lily is a beautiful, fun and energetic seven-year-old,” Mrs De Haas said. “To date, Lily has only been offered radiotherapy as a way of reducing the size of the tumour. There is only a slim chance that it will eliminate it altogether. “However, we aren’t pinning our hopes just on this alone. We have been researching treatments worldwide and hope to admit Lily into one of these specialist treatments after her radiotherapy is completed.” Since February, the basketball association has raised about $50,000 through online crowdfunding, a bingo night and donations. Fundraising volunteer Michelle John is at the helm of a group called Hope for Lily, which is organising an upcoming colour run and family event at Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve on April 20. The local netball club will also be hosting a Netfit competition on that day. “Hope for Lily was created by a group of

caring and dedicated community volunteers, who are fundraising for her and her family,” Ms John said. “All funds raised will be used for treatments and medicines that Lily requires to fight this brain tumour. “We realise it’s a very long road to recovery. But Lily’s family is strong, and together with the community, we are determined to do everything we can to make her well again.”

Among the fundraising efforts for the De Haas family, friend Deb Mitravics has pledged $10 a week for 40 weeks, while Foodworks at Riddells Creek has raised $7250 for Lily from profits in recent weeks. Chief signals his exit from council post Macedon Ranges council is starting early on its hunt for a new chief executive. Current chief executive Peter Johnston says he will not reapply when his contract expires in the new year after nearly a decade in the top job. “It is not unusual for a newly-elected council to consider opening up the position to the market if the current contract is nearing completion,” Mr Johnston said last week. “While I will not be an applicant when the job is advertised, I will continue to support the organisation – to keep pursuing our goals, objectives, projects and services – until my current contractual obligations cease on January 21, 2018.” At the council’s March meeting, councillors formed an advisory committee to oversee the process of selecting a new organisational chief. The committee will include the mayor Jennifer Anderson and councillors Andrew Twaits, Roger Jukes and Janet Pearce. The council will also bring in an independent recruitment consultant to advise on the process of shortlisting and interviewing candidates. MY PLACE Anyone looking for Annie Smithers will either find her fossicking in the garden or creating in the kitchen. The Malmsbury chef and restaurateur spoke with Esther Lauaki.

How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in my cottage in Malmsbury for 14 years. What inspires you most in your work? The fruit and vegetables that I grow in my Malmsbury garden are what inspire me the most. I walk out into the vegetable patch, see what is ready and needs to be used, and construct a menu from there. Often I have many choices, which is great, as the ideas get to wrestle around with each other until a winner emerges. How long have you been a chef/restaurateur? I’ve been cooking for nearly 34 years. I started my own serious restaurant in 2005, so 12 years as a restaurateur. Where have you worked previously? I did my apprenticeship at Stephanie’s in the ’80s. After my stint at the Mill in Malmsbury, I hankered to be in the country. In 1992, I moved up to be head chef at The Lakehouse, where I stayed for four years. Then I spent a few years working at the very beautiful Lavandula, out at Shepherd’s Flat. Tell me about your latest book? I’ve written a new book that is 16 seasonal menus that feature on the menu at Du Fermier. They are lovely French farmhouse menus that

are perfect for reproducing at home. There are easy ones and hard ones; each dish can be cooked as a stand-alone dish or, if you choose to execute the whole menu, there is a very helpful timeline to help you … like I do in the restaurant kitchen. The most magical thing about the book is that it is an illustrated book, not one with a lot of photographs. Robin Cowcher has illustrated the food, my garden, my cats and dogs, and the result is truly delightful. What other hats do you wear? I support the community around my restaurant by donating experiences that can be raffled off for money – master classes, special dinners, interactive kitchen experiences. But my favorite cause is to raise money for my friend Stephanie Alexander’s kitchen garden foundation. What’s your favourite place to spend time? With my dog Tommy, we walk down to Malmsbury Botanic gardens … past the Mill and The Mansions, across to the railway station, down to the reservoir, round the big bluestone wall, along the aqueduct, under the Malmsbury viaduct, and then up the hill and home. It’s a walk that takes in the majesty of this tiny town, its extraordinary heritage and the amazing buildings and structures. What is the best thing about Macedon Range? The best thing is the diversity and beauty of the region. All within striking distance of Melbourne and the airport. We are all very lucky to live in such a beautiful place.

Builders and architects say faulty workmanship and poor design are the main reasons for water leaks in apartments and high-rise residential buildings. As industrial areas are converted and apartment living takes off in central cities, suburban satellites are also boosting medium density developments, and water leaks are becoming a number one maintenance issue for owners. Older buildings are usually the main problem â€“ statistics show that during pre-purchase inspections between 2010 and 2015 across Australia, four per cent of residences were found to have major water problems, and 34 per cent had minor problems. Experts say there only needs to be one leak caused by a poor sealing job, a broken tile or a blocked drain, to cause substantial damage to an apartment, or the ones next door. With more than three million Australians now living in apartments, the maintenance of both old and new apartment buildings needs regular monitoring. Water damage can not only be a very expensive fault to repair, it has the potential to make an apartment uninhabitable. Water damage can cause structural materials to rot, compromising the integrity of walls and even foundations. Cannons cop a thrashing By Tara Murray Calder Cannons experienced a day to forget on Saturday when they were comprehensively beaten by Western Jets in the TAC Cup. From the outset the Jets were fierce at the ball and forcing turnovers. The Cannons struggled to get the ball in their front half and when they did, they kicked it straight to the opposition. With few inside 50s in the first quarter, the Cannons trailed 25-1 at the first break. They had a better second quarter, kicking five goals, but still trailed by 20 points at the main break. The Cannons kept with them in the second half, kicking three goals to the Jets four, but it wasn’t enough. Jets won 11.19 (85)-8.6 (54). There was no hiding the disappointment of Cannons coach Andrew Johnston. He knows that if the Jets had kicked straight, his side could have been beaten by 10 goals or more. “The Western Jets deserve credit,” he said. “We knew they would come hard at us. “We’ve probably had it over them the last 10 years, but the last two to three years they’ve got us a couple of times. “When the opposition use the ball a bit better and put pressure on us and we turn the ball over, it’s hard to fight back.” Johnston said there were two clear areas the Cannons needed to improve on. “[Jets] work rate and willingness to help each other stood out,” he said.

“Our guys have to learn from that and understand it’s not an individual game – it’s a team game. “The more you play together as a team and want to work hard for each other, the result will look after itself. You get what you deserve.” Johnston said that while there weren’t many positives for the Cannons to take out of the game, the performances of Curtis Taylor and Jake Riccardi stood out. “Curtis Taylor was really good today – he’s certainly stepping up and doing some impressive stuff,” he said. “Jake Riccardi, when he’s forward where we want to play him … his work rate to help teammates and win the ball himself has been very impressive.” Mohammed Moustafa and Sam Graham kicked two goals each for the Cannons. Adding to the Cannons woes, Rhylee West was forced to sit out the second half with an injury. Johnston wasn’t sure of the exact nature of the injury or its severity, but West was clearly limping after the game. The Cannons, who are 0-2 after a first-round loss to Eastern Ranges, face Oakleigh Chargers this week.

SPORT Teen off and running towards an Olympic career Sunbury Little Athletics star Elias Kahsay is making his mark on the running track. In his first full athletics season Kahsay has qualified for both the Australian Athletics Championships and the Australian Little Athletics Championships. Last week he travelled to Sydney for the Australian Athletics Championships, competing in the under-14, 800 metre and 400 metre events, after finishing first and second respectively at the state titles earlier this year. Last week he made the finals in both events, finishing seventh in the 800 metre and eighth in the 400 metre. Next up, Kahsay will compete in the under-13 800 metres at the national Little Athletics championships after winning the state title in the same event. Kahsay said he hadn’t expected success at state level. “If definitely surprised me and I didn’t think I would go that good,” he said.

“I was just excited to win.” Despite having won the 800 metres at the Athletics Victoria titles representing Keilor St Bernards, Kahsay didn’t think he was a chance to win at the Little Athletics titles. The 13-year-old now has his sights set on making the Olympics. It’s a long way from 18 months ago when he didn’t like running. Kahsay said he only dropped in at Sunbury Little Athletics because he’d been doing well at athletic events at school. Brooke Rennie, an integration aide at Kahsay’s primary school in Sunbury, recognised his talent. Ms Rennie’s son was involved at Sunbury Little Athletics and she offered to drive Kahsay to and from his Ascot Vale home each week so he could compete. “I attended several athletics days for the school and noticed how naturally talented he was at running,” said Ms Rennie. “He was competing against other kids with years

of experience, who were wearing the latest designer athletics shoes, and he was beating them.” Kahsay and his older brother and sister left Ethiopia for Australia in 2011 after the death of their parents. Kahsay was seven at the time. Last week’s championships also attracted former Sunbury Little Athletics members Junior Mabia and Cody Rodwell. Mabia won gold in the under-18 100 metre relay. Redbacks focus on youth

The Calder Cannons remain undefeated in the inaugural TAC Cup girls competition after a thumping win against Western Jets on Wednesday night. The Cannons led by 14 points at quarter-time, before kicking 12.12 to nothing in the last three quarters to win 15.15 (105)-1.1 (7). Assistant coach Jason Peak said that while the big win was pleasing, the Cannons’ focus remained on developing the players and preparing them for potential drafting. “Wins are a bonus,” he said. It’s the second time in three games the Cannons have had one-sided wins. “We kept them to two or three inside 50s in the first quarter and I don’t think they had an inside 50 in the second and third quarters,” he said. “There’s an entire team focus for us that we have to be mindful of not just being attacking. We have to make sure we hold our structures.” With some players from both sides playing on Saturday in a combined Cannons/Jets team against Tasmania, neither side was at full strength. The Jets decided to rest players completely, while the Cannons had minute restrictions on several players. Chloe Molloy’s transition from basketballer to footballer for the Cannons continues – she kicked five goals on Wednesday night and has 14 goals for the season. Madison Prespakis had her best game of the season and was among those to play on Saturday. Georgia Patrikios continued her good form and was named best on ground. Peak said Lauren Caruso continued to show development. “We named her captain and she’s a fantastic person,” he said. “Her performances from game to game have gone from strength to strength … she was really influential in the win against Eastern Ranges. “She’s lifted her performances and now is a realistic chance of being drafted.” Kellie Sutton, Chloe Hodgson, who kicked two goals, and Carla Rendelmann all made their debuts for the Cannons against the Jets. The Cannons sit on top of the ladder after three rounds, one of three undefeated sides. With no finals, the title winner will be the team that finishes on top of the ladder. The Cannons’ next match will be against Oakleigh Chargers on Sunday.

Romsey is hoping its continued focus on youth and bringing through young players will reap it more rewards this Riddell District Football League season. After back-to-back premierships, the Redbacks finished the last season in ninth place – two games outside the top six – with six wins. While the results didn’t appear to be good news for the club, it was happy with the direction it was heading. This season Corey O’Sullivan will take the coaching helm, the club’s third senior coach in as many seasons. As a former junior coach for the Redbacks, O’Sullivan has coached many of the current senior playing group over the years. The Redbacks have been one of the quieter sides in the recruiting period, keen to focus on continuing developing their young side. The players they have added are a mixture of youth and experience. Among the experienced players are James Carroll, 2013 Bowen Medalist Darren Goodwin and Alan Jeffries. “We’re hoping to get natural improvement out of the younger players and add in the experienced players to hopefully go to a different level,” O’Sullivan said. Jack O’Sullivan, who only played three games last season after being part of the 2015 premiership, and new recruit Jaidyn Caruana are two of the young stars the Redbacks expect to develop even further. “They bring pace and footy nouse,” O’Sullivan said. “There’s plenty of young fellows that have come up playing juniors at Romsey. “We’re moving in the right direction … Nathan Hoy and Connor Whelan played senior football last season, Jack Jedwab, Harrison Salm and Brayden Feltham are others we expect to play senior football. “They’ve got their best football ahead of them.” O’Sullivan said the main thing for the club this season wasn’t ladder position and wins, but making sure that everyone works hard. Romsey starts its season on April 8 against Sunbury Kangaroos.

Thunder strikes at last By Tara Murray

East Sunbury got lucky in the opening round of Essendon District Football League division 2, with victory sealed after the final siren. The Thunder got a first view of a new-look and massively improved Burnside Heights side, and looked in trouble early on. After trailing by 13 points at half-time, the Thunder got more of the ball in the second half but was still down by 17 points midway through the last quarter. The margin was reduced to a point and in the end it came down to the final kick of the game. Diquan Williams marked on the boundary line and then the siren sounded, leaving him the chance to snatch the win. He slotted the goal to give the Thunder a 10.13 (73)-10.8 (68) win. Thunder coach Steve Grey said his side was lucky. “Burnside Heights played some good football,” he said. “In the first half they pressured us and we couldn’t go with them. “It was a different game from us in the second half and we put the pressure on them. We had so much footy, but just turned it over, making bad decisions and not hitting targets.” He said Burnside Heights was no longer the easy-beat of the competition and would challenge a lot of sides. While disappointed with several aspects of the game, Grey said the way the side responded in the second half was pleasing. “We were excited to get the win and it brings a bit of belief,” he said. “We lost a few close games, under a goal, last year. We wouldn’t have been able to get the win last year. “It was good to get back into the game when a lot wasn’t going right for us.” Grey said Tom Cree, Lachlan Brne and new recruit Callum Lever were stand-outs for the Thunder. Williams kicked three goals, including the sealer from the wing. Grey said he wasn’t expecting the side to fire on all cylinders for a number of weeks. “We had five under-19s on the weekend. DJ Williams, Jorden Braddy, Callum Lever and Tom Burnside have come into the side. “Dylan Wright will help us this year. He’s a Sunbury boy who has moved back to the area. “We’re a pretty new side – it will take a while to gel.” Round two will be a special occasion for the Thunder with the day dedicated to club legend David Kimpton, who died late last year. The Thunder will host Keilor Park during the day and hold a function afterwards. Other division 2 winners were Coburg Districts, Northern Saints and Moonee Valley, in a one-point thriller against Roxburgh Park.

Burkett takes McIntyre Cup honours Romsey’s Chris Burkett took out the Sullivan Medal as Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s best player for the 2016-17 season. The Romsey playing captain-coach led the count for most of the night, finishing two votes ahead of Riddell skipper Mick Allen. Darren Quarrell finished third. Burkett averaged nearly 50 with the bat and took 21 wickets for the season. He also won the McIntyre Cup aggregate award, and was named skipper of the McIntyre Cup team of the year, with Mick Allen named vice-captain. Women reshape AFL Goldfields A new-look AFL Goldfields women’s competition hits the ovals this season, with competition across two divisions. After AFL Victoria handed control of women’s football back to local leagues and governing bodies, the Goldfields competition has grown exponentially, from five to 12 teams. Two from last season’s competition – Bacchus Marsh and East Point – are part of the Goldfields competition again. Melton Centrals, runners-up in Victorian Women’s Football League north-west competition last season, will play in division 1, along with Carisbrook, North Geelong and Redan and Ballarat. A combined North Ballarat City-Lake Wendouree team will also play. Bacchus Marsh and East Point both play in division 2, as will Redan’s reserves side. Three new teams step out for the first time, with Sunbury Kangaroos, Gisborne and Drysdale all forming women’s sides. AFL Goldfields will have separate Ballarat and Riddell District football league competitions for youth and junior girls. Melton Centrals, Sunbury Kangaroos, Diggers Rest, Bacchus Marsh, Darley and two Gisborne teams are in the RDFL youth girls competition, while Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Melton South and Melton junior football club are in the RDFL’s junior competition.

Jets scramble to keep to their winning ways It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but Sunbury Jets maintained their winning start to the Big V women’s state championship division on Saturday. After three good wins to start the season, the Jets were tested by the Bulleen Boomers. The Jets took an early lead and led by five points at half-time, with the margin reduced to three at the main break. Early in the second half the Jets blew out the score to lead 18 points in the fourth quarter. The Boomers pulled it back to 10 points at the final siren for a winning score of 68-58.

Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama said it was good to be tested after a few one-sided results in the opening rounds. “It was a great game and they came prepared and took it to us,” he said. “They had a couple of players that presented some challenges for us. We learnt a lot from the game and it was a good game for us to have. “They challenged us and I hope other sides will do the same.” Courtney Duever topscored with 23 points, but Kereama said it wasn’t her best performance of the season as she also had eight turnovers.

“She played well, but the challenge is for her to get better.” Imports Orla O’Reilly and Josie Stockill also scored double figures. While all the Jets players got court time, Kereama said he would have liked to have given the bench players more minutes. “It’s great to give them the experience and we’ll need all our players during the season.” Despite the winning start, the Jets aren’t getting ahead of themselves. “We still have a lot of improvement. Everyone has to be better when playing the powerhouse

sides like Hume City and Knox,” Kereama said. The Jets face Waverley Falcons on Sunday before the Easter break. Meanwhile the Jets’ men’s side took their first win of the division 1 season in a close game, for a score of 78-73. Javari Williams topscored with 19 points and had 10 rebounds, while Wil Chan and Jacob Formosa, in his first game of the season, scored double figures. This weekend they face Keilor Thunder. know who’d buy the 500X; anyone who wants to be different. In a sea of cookie-cutter blandness, this is the rugged individual. It won’t appeal to everyone but it’s not trying to. It’s the type of car that gets noticed and starts conversations. Given all the equipment, the 500X can comfortably justify its price; it even has blind-spot warning and there are hundreds of optional bits to personalise it. The ride is hard, the seats are thin and you can’t lose concentration, especially at speed. But the electronics are easy and intuitive, something of a first for Fiat. The fit and finish is also a step up from cheaper 500 models. Rear seat room is tight – only kids will fit on longer drives – but the boot is generous given the car’s compact dimensions. The front passenger’s seat folds forward for extra room up back, handy for installing a child seat. It took a while to acclimatise to the steering and accelerator and, being tall and slab-sided, the car can be knocked about by strong crosswinds.

guess Fiat 500s sell because they’re small, cheap and cute. So what to make of one that’s large, somewhat less than cute and costs more than a Commodore? Well, it has all the gear – selectable four-wheel drive, keyless entry and start, navigation, cruise, dual-zone air-conditioning, collision warning and none-too-subtle lane keeping. And rear doors. This one also gets a solid four-cylinder engine and a nine-speed auto. It’s not quick and can bog down before the turbo cuts in, but power is sufficient for wrangling traffic and well up on the standard 500. It’s nowhere near as economical though. Despite a little body roll, the handling is competent. The ride, however, is sharp, even around town and given pretty basic seating this makes it tiring over long distances. It’s intended for the city; behaviour at 110km/h is noisy and rather tentative. I guess there’s a place for this car. I just can’t imagine who’d buy it with Suzuki Vitaras priced where they are.
