Lady luck shines again Mount Macedon’s Lloyd Williams became Australia’s most successful owner of Melbourne Cup winners when Almandin claimed the nation’s greatest horse race. Mr Williams, a five-time owner of Melbourne Cup winners, was trackside at Flemington in top hat and morning suit for Cup day last week – a rare public appearance for a man who normally prefers watching the great race from his Macedon Lodge equine centre. It had been 16 years since jockey Kerrin McEvoy claimed a Melbourne Cup victory. He guided seven-year-old gelding Almandin across the line, overcoming Irish stayer Heartbreak City, with favourite Hartnell the minor placing. The day after his fifth Melbourne Cup triumph, Mr Williams was asked what his strategy was for winning. “Lots of luck, lots of luck and the almighty shining on you … that’s the strategy,” he said. Rail service cuts denied By Esther Lauaki The government has rejected rumours that Sunbury’s V/Line services may be cut again. Speaking in State Parliament recently, Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn called for an ironclad guarantee that V/Line stops at the town would not be cut, amid rumours that commuter services are still under threat. A spokesman for public transport minister Jacinta Allan told Star Weekly that Mr Finn and the Liberal opposition “don’t care about public transport and are trying to create controversy where this is none”.

“We have no plans to remove services from Sunbury,” the spokesman said. “The former Liberal government didn’t start a single major public transport project, order any regional carriages for two years, and ripped $120 million out of V/Line. “We’ve already delivered more than 80 extra services to Sunbury, ordered 48 new carriages, and increased funding to V/Line. “We’re also getting on with the Metro tunnel project, which will enable more services and high-capacity trains to Sunbury.” Overcrowding of the V/Line country services through to Bendigo has been a long-running

issue between city and country commuters since the electrification of the line in 2012. Sunbury commuters campaigned last year against the government’s decision to remove the town as the pick-up point for V/Line trains travelling to and from Melbourne and Bendigo, while their Woodend counterparts lobbied to get Sunbury commuters off V/Line trains travelling to Bendigo from Melbourne. Sunbury passengers were later told that they were welcome aboard V/Line trains, and stops at Sunbury were reinstated. Mr Finn told Star Weekly he believes “rumours” of service cuts surfaced because the

reversal of last year’s commuter ban had only been a temporary measure. “I have asked the minister to provide … an ironclad guarantee that V/Line services will remain servicing the people of Sunbury for the duration of this government,” he said. “V/Line services have been servicing Sunbury for many a long year, and with [its] electrification … the minister announced that there would be a removal of V/Line services to Sunbury. “It does concern me now … I hear rumours around the Sunbury township the V/Line services to Sunbury are under threat again.”

Outbreak puts the mozz on fun By Esther Lauaki Melbourne’s mosquito outbreak has hit hard in Hume and the Macedon Ranges, forcing farmers off tractors and sending residents running for cover. A dark, buzzing cloud swarmed on Mount Macedon last week – a sure sign of a wet spring – driving residents indoors just as the weather warmed up. Macedon resident Dominic Romeo, who has lived locally for more than 16 years, says the

problem seems much worse than other years. “It’s definitely more noticeable in the morning when the sun comes out,” Mr Romeo said. “With all the moisture from all the rain that we’ve had around these parts, it’s just made them breed and multiply. “There are certainly more of them coming inside – the garden is just full of them.” During September, 150mm of rain fell in 16 days and more than 200mm for the month, creating ideal breeding conditions for the biting beasts. Hume council is encouraging residents

to prepare their homes and protect themselves. Chief executive Domenic Isola said an excessive amount of rain, combined with a lack of sunshine, had left pools of water everywhere where mosquitoes breed. “Following recent flooding events across Victoria, it is likely that mosquito populations will increase significantly, and remain high through most of the summer in Hume and across the state,” Mr Isola said. “Residents can help address this issue by taking simple steps, such as removing [open]

containers from yards, fixing leaky taps and keeping pools chlorinated or salted throughout mozzie season.” The Victorian government’s online Beat the Bite campaign also advises people to clean up any stagnant water around their homes, change pet’s drinking water, bird baths and vases at least once a week, and maintain flywire screens to ensure there are no holes for mosquitoes to get inside. Cops move to end plate theft Number plate theft in the Macedon Ranges is on the rise and among the crimes “concerning local police”, according to their commander. Local Area Commander Inspector Ryan Irwin said a common item targeted by thieves was number plates, which are often then used in the commission of other more serious crimes. Victoria Police and the Lancefield, Romsey and Gisborne Lions clubs and Gisborne Venturer Scouts have joined forces to reduce number plate theft by giving out free “anti-theft” number plate screws at two upcoming events. Vehicle owners can attend the Romsey skate park between 10am and 2pm on November 6 or the Gisborne Collision Centre between noon and 4pm on November 12 to have the plate screws fitted. “I urge people to take part in this free initiative and help us put a stop to number plate theft,” Inspector Irwin said. He said police were also worried by property being stolen from cars left unlocked or with valuables clearly in view. “Most of the offending is occurring overnight and thieves are targeting vehicles parked on the street or nature strips outside private homes as well as vehicles parked in residential driveways,” Inspector Irwin said. “Police have increased patrols in locations that have been targeted by thieves and we urge people to take extra security measures wherever possible.” To report suspicious behaviour or to pass on knowledge of crime committed in your area, call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Bank chief bids farewell The man who has guided the fortunes of Lancefield and Romsey community banks since the branches opened more than 15 years ago is pulling up stumps. Senior manager Rod Browning, who came on board a few short months after the Lancefield branch opened its doors, is retiring next month after 46 years in the banking industry. Mr Browning said he looks forward to devoting his time to his great loves – family, travel and cricket. He’s an avid cricketer who played at premier level earlier in his career, served in administration at Sub-District club Brunswick and still plays in the over 60s circuit. “I’ve felt a bit jealous at times when some of the other players have gone away for tournaments and I’ve been at work – so now I’ll

be able to be part of it a lot more,” Mr Browning said. “It’s been a pleasure to have been able to work here and I will miss all the people that I’ve met. “I’ve told people the same thing in all the years I’ve been in the industry … this is their bank and it’s important that the community knows that and continues to support their community banks.” Lancefield and Romsey community banks chair David Plunkett said Mr Browning’s retirement would be a big loss. “Our bank company, and the wider Lancefield and Romsey communities, owe a big debt of thanks to Rod Browning for the way he has grown our bank,” Mr Plunkett said. Dog law anger leads to protest By Esther Lauaki A Sunbury canine show became centre stage for a protest against state government changes to dog breeding laws last week. Sunbury Canine Club’s all-breed championship dog show at Clarke Oval drew 2500 entries of more than 150 dog breeds, but anger and frustration among breeders halted festivities at noon for “a public display of unity”. Dogs Victoria president Wayne Fleming invited guests to protest the proposed reforms to the Domestic Animal Act, which will force dog owners to comply with commercial breeding rules from which they were previously exempt. The reforms, tabled in Parliament in recent weeks, aim to eradicate all puppy farms and entice more families to adopt abandoned pets. Under the new laws, anyone owning six or more breeding dogs must house them in a commercial-grade kennel with concrete floors, six-foot high solid walls and built-in heating and cooling. The parliamentary review committee’s final deliberations on December 6 will be vital for pedigree breeders. Mr Fleming said removing the breeding exemption would have “serious unintended consequences” and would “do the opposite of its intent”. “It will force all breeders with one fertile female to register with their local council as a domestic animal business, complying with the code of practice for … breeding and rearing businesses.

“The legislation is more suited to control and regulate large commercial operations, not small scale hobby breeders, who breed occasionally, and in a home environment to ensure the public can get the best, most well socialised, puppies possible.” Mr Fleming said Dogs Victoria would continue to work with the state government and the dog breeding sector to establish a breeder licensing framework that would safeguard the future of pedigree dogs.

Northern Victoria MP Daniel Young said the proposed changes “appear to be an overreach”. “The proposals are too narrow,” Mr Young said. “I am concerned about reports that there has been no transparency in the review that led to these proposed amendments.” He said the amendments would also have a negative impact on hobby breeders, who would be faced with the burden of becoming a domestic animal business, even if they only sell one litter. “I am calling on the Andrews government to take this bill back to the drawing board and make changes fairer to the likes of VCA, and to consult with breed clubs on proposed changes that will support the intent of the bill,” Mr Young said.

Paws for pet parade More than 200 dog lovers and their four-legged friends will take their walks together at Paws in the Park next week. Paws in the Park, on November 13, usually draws a crowd of about 250 people and their pets to the event, which kicks off at Gisborne Veterinary Clinic. Practice manager Travis Grieve said Paws in the Park has grown significantly over the years. “Paws in the Park first started in October 2006, with about 80 participants and their dogs turning up for the morning,” Mr Grieve said. “The initial reasoning … was to help promote correct pet health within the Macedon Ranges shire, and also to help promote and raise funds

for the various not-for-profit organisations in Macedon Ranges shire.” Gisborne Veterinary Clinic staff organise the event each year, with local businesses donating time or products for the walk. They hope to raise more than $25,000 at this year’s event, which will include information stalls set up by Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network, Seeing Eye Dogs Australia and Gisborne Pony Club, raffles, entertainment, and dental checks and nail trims by the clinic’s veterinarians, for a gold coin donation. Sounds like a celebration Almost 40 virtuosos will celebrate women in the arts in a series of sonic shows at the Meat Market in Melbourne over three days from this Friday. Kyneton harpist Mary Doumany will be among 38 sound artists who will present The Book of Daughters. Doumany composes and sings her own material, which she describes as “an abstract art form” using sound. She says she is one of a new breed of Australian cross-genre artists who use influences from many styles and traditions to create their own music. “When people come to the show, they can expect to step into a soundscape,” Doumany says. “Much like if you were in a forest and you hear the trees, the insects and the wind.

“It’s music but not in the traditional sense … you’re free to go somewhere quite different in these shows, and it’s unhinged from what you’d expect from music or sound.” The shows, produced by Jolt and directed by James Hullick, will include performances by international artist and percussionist Yoshimio and Japanese shamisen master Rumiko Tadano. “The Book of Daughters is going to be a festival of sound,” Doumany says. “It’s about increasing the involvement of women in this area of the arts.” The Book of Daughters shows start at 7.30pm on November 10, 11 and 12 at the Meat Market, 5 Blackwood Street, Melbourne. By Esther Lauaki A failure to meet fuel reduction targets before the fire season sets in has sparked a call for the state government to take urgent action. Northern Victoria Liberal MP Wendy Lovell is urging more action to safeguard residents and their properties this fire season. Ms Lovell last week criticised the Andrews government for poor management of pre-season fuel loads, citing its failure to meet burn targets. An Environment, Land, Water and Planning department report has found the state only achieved 72 per cent of the target this winter, and is facing an uphill battle to meet its targets for the forthcoming fire season. Ms Lovell has called on the state government to take immediate action to protect Victorians from the coming fire season, which is expected to be high risk. “The risk of serious fire incidents for this summer has increased significantly due to the state government’s failure to adequately meet fuel reduction targets,” the MP said. “[This] has resulted in unacceptably high levels of fuel load remaining in Victorian forests going into the 2016-17 bushfire season. “The Royal Commission findings identified the importance of fuel reduction in decreasing fuel loads to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires. “[It] also found that excessive fuel loads add to the likelihood of more intense bushfires … thereby placing firefighters and communities at greater risk.

Unmet targets spark fire alarm “The report went on to say that the state should achieve prescribed burning of an annual rolling target of a minimum of five per cent of public land each year, and that the state be held accountable for meeting this target,” Ms Lovell said. Forest Fire Management Victoria district manager Paul Bates said slashing has already started on about 1500 hectares of public land in central Victoria this season. Mr Bates said the work has been slightly delayed due to significant rain in the region over recent months.

“Forecasts for the summer show that parts of central Victoria are at above average risk of grassfire due to the increase in growth. “Reducing bushfire risk is a shared responsibility,” he said. “Reducing fuel loads on public land can only do so much – communities and households need to know how to be prepared and reduce their bushfire risk on their properties. “Our modelling shows a significant amount of bushfire risk is on privately owned land because of thick vegetation and high populations,” Mr Bates said. “We encourage homeowners to be prepared … by clearing space around their house of all flammable materials.” Report risk concerns to DELWP on 136 186.

Movember moves men Men, and women, are doing their bit at Sunbury Community Health for men’s health month, now known as Movember. Diabetes educator Brea Redman-Smith has urged people to get involved in one of the many men’s events the clinic is hosting this month. These include a men’s-only diabetes course on November 10, 17 and 24 to inform those who have, or are at risk of, diabetes about the importance of exercise, nutrition and foot care. SPORT White knights post tons By Tara Murray Cricketers swapped their multi-coloured clothing for whites for the first of the two-day McIntyre Cup matches in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. Batsmen enjoyed the change of pace, with two posting centuries and a third making 99 in the top grade. Veteran Warren Else starred for Woodend, making 116 against Gisborne at Gardiner Reserve. Woodend was in trouble early at 3-47, before playing coach Michael Nalesnyik and Else got going in a 61-run stand. Else was joined at the crease by youngster Thomas Boyer when Nalesnyik was dismissed for 34. Boyer, who’s still playing under-17s as well, showed maturity as he and Else put on 117 for the fifth wicket. With Else gone, Woodend continued on to 7-259, Boyer making 49. Jay King was best of the bowlers with 3-63. A Michael Treweek century guided Rupertswood to 8-241 against Romsey, Treweek making 102 at the top of the order to help his side to a competitive total. Rupo’s innings followed a familiar pattern with the loss of an early wicket before Treweek and skipper Mark Ryan put on 102 for the second wicket. After the loss of Ryan, Rupo lost frequent wickets on their way to 241. Jamie Taylor took three wickets for Romsey. Diggers Rest Bulla’s batsmen found form in a big way: a massive 324 against Riddell. Steven Fogarty was the star with 99, before being bowled by a cracker delivery from Matthew Livingstone. Playing coach Kevin Barker was next best of the batsmen with 51, while seven teammates made 22 or more. Heath Wadden took three wickets for Riddell. The other match is a low-scoring affair, with Bacchus Marsh on track for victory against Sunbury. The Bulls bowled Sunbury out for just 118, Madushanka Ekanayaka taking 4-36. Max Scott played a lone hand for Sunbury, making 56; the next-highest score was extras. Four batsmen made ducks. In reply, the Cobras were 2-59 at stumps. Peter Lalor made 39, while Heath Boffey and Stephen Treweek took a wicket each.

Putt to add bite to Sharks’ midfield

Rupertswood has strengthened its ruck, adding former AFL-listed player Dean Putt to its list for next year’s Riddell District Football League season. The Sharks announced that they had secured the signature of Putt, who comes from Essendon District Football League premiers Keilor. Putt was drafted by Richmond in 2008, but didn’t get an AFL game. He played VFL with the Tigers’ former affiliate Coburg, and then with Bendigo. Sharks’ coach Kevin Fitzgerald said the addition of Putt would help their midfield. “It’s a fantastic signing,” he said. “We thought we may have had him last year, but he wanted to stay at Keilor for another season and try and win a premiership, which he did. “He’s good mates with Brent Swallow and Todd Podolczak. He’ll make a big difference for us and how we go about things. He’ll give us a huge advantage, being a mobile player with a good kick. There are not many other players in the competition of his size.” The Sharks are hoping Putt will give the Sharks the most potent ruck combination in

the competition. Joel West, another former VFL player has re-signed, while the club is hoping Jordan Braddy will also remain. “Signing Dean is a real bonus,” Fitzgerald said. “Joel was a bit underdone last season, joining midway through, and, with a full pre-season, will be fitter. “Jordan and Dean can play forward as well. It’ll be a mobile combination.” Of the existing playing group, Fitzgerald said most have been maintained. “We set out to sign our boys first, and then search for what we’re looking for. Pretty much everyone has signed on, as have most of our under-18 players. “Matthew Smith has to have a shoulder reconstruction and will miss most of the year, while Liam Berry needs surgery as well.” Cameron McRorie will again play with Coburg and Billy Cannolo is training with the VFL club. Netball coach stepping up to senior ranks New Woodend-Hesket A-grade coach Wendy Roberts is excited by the prospect of returning to coach senior netball. Roberts, a 17-year resident of the Macedon Ranges, has extensive playing and coaching experience, but this will be her introduction to the Riddell District Netball League. Most recently, she’s been involved with the Macedon Ranges Netball Association junior program, having previously coached state league netball at Parkville. She also coached the under-21 Victorian men’s team. As a player, Roberts held an AIS scholarship for two years and played in the then-Victorian State League competition. Roberts says she’s excited to coach the Hawks after being approached by netball co-ordinator Kellie Duff. “I’ve never been involved in the netball-football set-up, so I’m learning on the go,” she said last week. “I coached at Parkville then we moved up to the Macedon Ranges. My daughter got involved in netball and I got involved up here at Macedon Ranges Netball Association. It’s time for me to go back to senior netball.” Roberts, who will also be the club’s head coach, says she knows it won’t be an easy or quick ride up the ladder, sharing Duff’s view that it’s about setting up the program for the long term. Building foundations off the court is just as important as building them on the court, she adds. “I want to increase the skill base and the confidence. We finished eighth of 12 teams last year and you learn from every game . “It’s exciting that we have a complement of coaches who can work together and learn from each other. We can really get to know the players and develop them. “You need to inspire at training and you don’t want them to get bored. We have some good foundations.” Roberts says developing local netballers is a passion, and she wants to help out a local club instead of returning to coaching in Melbourne. “I bring enthusiasm, energy, dedication and ownership of the player’s performance,” she said. “I have passion, hope and a strong desire for teamwork on and off the court. I believe if players connect with my vision for the club, there will be successes both developmentally and on the league ladder.” The Hawks have also announced the reappointment of Anne-Louise Lindner as the under-19 coach. She led the under-19s this year when they won a final, the first in the club’s netball history. Trials for the Hawks’ netball teams started on Saturday. A second lot of trials will be held Wednesday for the open sides, while the under-19s will have a second trial session on November 24. A familiar face gets cracking at the Sunbury Lions

New Sunbury Lions coach Ben Jordan is quickly getting to work. Jordan’s appointment as coach of the Ballarat Football League side was announced on Monday night last week, and by Wednesday he was at the club sorting out the playing list. Jordan admits his late appointment puts him behind the eight-ball in preparing for next year. “There’s a fair bit to work out with management of players and recruitment,” he said. “I’ve got to determine who has signed and who hasn’t. We’ve got to roll our sleeves up and get stuck into it.” Jordan said there was a good foundation in place and that former coach Rick Horwood had done a “fantastic” job. “A fair proportion of the players were waiting on the coach appointment and I want to have talks with them as soon as possible,” Jordan said. “I’ll have a better idea of the list in the next couple of weeks.”

Josh Burgess will be one omission as he’s signed with Sunbury Kangaroos while Jack Landt has put in a clearance application to Essendon Doutta Stars. Jordan is no stranger to the Lions, having played with them twice previously. He played with the club in 2008 and then in 2010 and 2011. Before that, he made his name with East Point, where in 2005 he won the league’s Henderson Medal. Jordan coached the BFL interleague side in 2013. “I played a fair bit of footy in Sunbury and live in the area,” he said. “It’s the premier club in the region and it was too good an opportunity not to put in for. “I enjoyed the standard and the open style of footy. I’ve been removed from it the last few years, but it’s not a complete unknown.” Jordan comes to the Lions having spent last year doing some work with Essendon’s VFL

side. Before that he coached Riddell District Football League side Rupertswood for two years. “I stepped down [from Rupertswood] for a number of reasons,” he said. “Moving on allowed me to do other things and develop myself. “I come to the Lions with varying experiences as a coach and player, and bring external expertise.” Another former Lion, Niall McGovern, has been appointed Lions reserves coach. He has played 250 games across several clubs. Jordan played with McGovern at the Lions before later coaching him at Rupertswood. “He’s a really good footy person with a great attitude and leadership,” Jordan said. Underwood captained the under-19 team last year, while Rogers was in the under-17 team. Joining them in the Victoria Country squad are Bacchus Marsh’s Jack Lalor and Romsey’s Matthew Milne.

United has new resolve By Tara Murray It’ll be a new-look Sunbury United next year as the club puts a tough couple of years behind it. There’s a new senior coach, a new board and, more importantly, the senior and junior soccer clubs have amalgamated to become one. United president Charlie Pongrac said the board hopes having just one club will show there’s a unified approach focused on development and young talent. Other new board members include former senior coach Greg Czapnik as director of senior football operations, and Paul DiBlasi, who previously oversaw the juniors as vice-president. “Over the next three years, we want to nurture and promote a community culture for all our members and supporters,” Pongrac said. “The aim is to provide a clear player development pathway, from grassroots to senior football, and ultimately, to have success on the park.”

“We’re looking to establish a sub-committee to support our growing junior base. I’m sure we’ll face some challenges, so we’ll need all the help we can get to achieve our ambitions. “We have some fantastic people involved at the club already, they’re people who can see the potential here and want to help make a positive difference.” On field, United will be led by Lino Grech, who has coached juniors at Keilor Park and under-18s and under-20s at Pascoe Vale. He returns after playing with Sunbury in the 1990s. It’ll be no easy task for Grech, with United being relegated in FFV state league for a second straight season.

Next year they’ll play in state league 3 north-west, but Grech says, despite a tough couple of years, he can see a bright future. “I had many great memories as a player … and now I’m really looking forward to creating more great memories as a coach,” Grech said. “The facilities are here, there are good people at the club who want to see us succeed and, with the injection of young, local talent and a big push from everyone in the same direction, we have the potential to achieve so much. “My ultimate aim as a coach is to develop players into hard-working, senior footballers, who are also technically very good. United’s senior and junior clubs have joined together … focusing on youth and development.” Ian Burke has been reappointed as reserves coach for a third year. The club will also have new dressing rooms next season, which fits in with its focus on a new start. The club hopes the rooms will be ready in time for the start of the season.

Romsey golfers made the most of improved conditions to get on the green on Saturday. Playing in a difficult wind, golfers had to adjust to dry conditions after weeks of wet greens. On a tough day to post good scores, Pat Chisholm won from Mick Nicholls jr. In the women’s competition on Wednesday, Elaine Scanlon and Darlene Baker won.

Bowls Victoria Pennant and Central Highlands Bowls Division had the weekend off with the Victorian Open getting under way on Saturday.
