The sports communities of Sunbury and Gisborne are throwing their arms around the family of a young woman fighting for life after a car crash last month. A crowdfunding campaign, launched last week, raised more than $20,000 in six days in support of Bethany Wragg, 20, who was involved in a head-on collision in Sunbury on July 4 while travelling to netball training. Police said the crash happened at about 5.15pm when a black Holden ute travelling east along Dalrymple Road and a blue Mazda in which Bethany was travelling west, collided. Bethany sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to the Alfred hospital, where she spent two weeks in the intensive care unit in an induced coma. She was then moved to the neurological ward to continue her care and recovery, but remains in a coma. The driver of the ute, a 31-year-old Diggers Rest man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The Wragg family is heavily involved in the Sunbury community and Bethany is an A-grade netballer for Gisborne Football Netball Club. The GoFundme campaign was set up by Bethany’s aunt, Nicole Vernall, in response to requests from people wanting to help financially. It had raised $20,145 by last Friday. Ms Vernall said that while Bethany’s parents, Mary and Brenden, had not asked for any financial assistance, friends and family decided that a fund was the best way to show their support. “It has been a turbulent time for the family but Bethany has fought, and continues to fight, everything that has

This is a band ready for battle Metal band This Is A Prison is looking to stir up the mosh pit when it hits this year’s Macedon Ranges Battle of the Bands. The battle heats start on August 27 at Kyneton town hall. Drummer Dan Evans, 19, and four schoolmates formed their Trentham-based band for last year’s competition, but were pipped at the post in the finals. “We lost by one point last year,” he said. “We thought we’d come back this year and have another go.” Another mate coined the phrase “this is prison” as a joke for when bad things happened. Evans describes their music as progressive metal. “We’ve written 10 songs but we’ve only got 30 minutes so we’ll have to choose which ones to perform.” The heats will run from 6-10.30pm on August 27. Council left to pick up the tab By Esther Lauaki Councils face massive funding shortfalls and could be forced to cut back on school crossings, libraries and SES facilities unless the state government honours its partnerships, a Macedon Ranges councillor claims. Cr Russell Mowatt said the council foots most of the bills for critical services the state government expects councils to deliver. And he wants the government to pay its fair share. School crossing supervision began as a joint 50:50 funding arrangement in 1975, but
council now funds 80 per cent of these services; public libraries are now 83 per cent funded by Macedon Ranges ratepayers, he said. Cr Mowatt has called on the council to request a review of its funding levels – he also wants the original 50:50 funding agreements honoured, now and into the future. “The state government imposes a rate cap on all Victorian councils,” he said. “The reality of rate capping [is that] most councils will need to assess whether they will be able to continue to deliver services that are a state responsibility. “The evidence shows that, over time, the state
anger if we reduce them,” Cr Mowatt said. “We have struggled to maintain our own expanding emergency service responsibilities, and for years we have voiced concerns about the state government not fully funding SES units,” he said. “SES units should not be relying on councils, fundraisers and … goodwill.” The state government recently agreed to increase funding to maternal and child health services by almost 16 per cent, effectively restoring the 50:50 funding partnership for that service, Cr Mowatt said.

Club secretary Bill Morrison said seniors cricket had become increasingly popular over the past 10 years and he’s hoping a barbecue at Living Legends in Woodlands Historic Park on August 21 will attract more members. Mr Morrison said there was a nationwide circuit for cricket players aged 60 or more, and “some pretty good players can still be seen … on some lovely grounds.”
A community based program which encourages young people with mental health issues to help each other will be rolled out to other municipalities, thanks to a $100,000 Myer Foundation grant. Live4Life was developed in 2009 by Macedon Ranges council in conjunction with five local schools and social support agencies. It was developed in response to a reported increase in depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide among young people, particularly among 13 to 14 year-olds. Macedon Ranges council has since fielded requests from other local government areas to duplicate its successful program. An independent entity, Youth Live4Life Inc, has now been set up to enable other rural and regional communities to use the Live4Life model. Mayor Graham Hackett said other councils had been unsuccessful in gaining state funds to start the program in their municipalities. “We are thrilled that the Myer Foundation is funding the new Youth Live4Life Inc to take the first steps in rolling out the program to young people across Victoria,” Cr Hackett said. Youth Live4Life chairwoman and Macedon Ranges resident Sarah Mahon said although the new organisation was separate from Macedon Ranges’ Live4Life, the two groups would continue to work closely. “There are no short cuts for suicide prevention,” Ms Mahon said. “It is long term and requires a whole of community approach.”

Riddells Creek Pony Club jumped a 16-year hurdle to achieve its dream of a win at the recent state championships. A team has competed in the Horseland PCAV state flat team championships every year for more than a decade, and some of their best efforts often earned them top-six placings. But the girls brought home gold this year in the June competition in Gladysvale in the Yarra Ranges. The winning team comprised Jessica Harvey on DeGroot, Annalise Scott on Yami Ichi, Lauren Cocks on Kolbeach Explorer, and Acacia Harvey on Willowcroft Royal Fashion. Flat teams are made up of four riders riding
their horses in unison through rehearsed and unrehearsed tests. Team manager Lauren Cocks commended the girls’ commitment to their sport. “We have been practicing with our team manager Joanne Heintz for three months, rain, hail or shine and through many ups and downs,” she said. “The team did an outstanding job coming home in first place. “They couldn’t have done it without Jo, whose coaching and support was incredible.” Harvey and Scott also placed third overall in the pairs event. Eight mature elm trees will be removed as part of streetscape works in Gisborne this month. The trees are about 80 years old and are in the Aitken Street service road median strip next to the shopping centre and Gisborne Aquatic Centre. Council’s tree audit found major rot and decay in their upper canopy, and poor structure. The rest of the trees also require major crown reduction works to prolong their life. And the tree audit found four more elm trees requiring urgent removal in Main Street, Romsey.

Wipes block clean exit

By Esther Lauaki A Woodend mother had to watch $600 go ‘down the gurgler’ to learn an expensive lesson about so-called flushable wipes. Rilla Healey had to call an emergency after-hours plumber this month to unblock a sewer pipe that was clogged with wipes. Western Water has cautioned residents against using wipes, which plumbers have said cause up to 80 per cent of sewer blockages across the shire. Sewer blockages can lead to spills of raw sewage into waterways, streets and even homes. “We heard a gurgling noise coming from our pipes and then, suddenly, we had raw sewage coming up out of the shower and toilet,” Mrs Healey says. “It was just pure wet wipes forming a solid one-metre clump in the pipe.” Mrs Healey says her four-year-old had been using wet wipes for about a year, and only flushed one a day. “We thought we were being quite careful – the advertised ‘septic and sewer safe’ instructions on the packets are completely false,” she said. Macedon Ranges council plumbing contractor Rowan Fitzgerald said in facilities where wet wipes are used, 80 per cent of blockages are caused by wipes being disposed of incorrectly. Mr Fitzgerald says childcare facilities and sports centres are most at risk. “The trouble is the wipes stick in the drain, they don’t flow down, and they’ll stick on anything.” He says the packaging of wipes is misleading, and some companies are going as far as handing out free wipes to childcare centres. Western Water acting chief executive Graham Holt said wet wipes are not the only

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents can remember their lost ones and heroes of WWI’s Western Front, with centenary grants now available. Councils can apply for grants of $2000 for projects that commemorate the long and tragic Western Front campaign. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said the conflict was an important chapter in Australia’s military history. “The Western Front was one of the darkest periods of World War I – it touched so many thousands of Victorians,” he said. “This is an opportunity for locals to share their own personal connections.” Mr Bull said commemorative events and activities help tomorrow’s leaders gain a better understanding of Australia’s wartime contribution. “Our veterans gave us a great gift, and it’s our duty to preserve their legacy for future generations to cherish,” he said. Almost 300,000 Australians served on the Western Front and more than 46,000 died in action on the muddy fields of France. Personal connections can be shared through photographic tributes on the recently unveiled I Will Remember app – part of the new Victoria Remembers the Western Front microsite, which includes history, stories and the latest commemorative event information. Circle of friendship A support program for Sunbury girls is helping young people get their lives together – but it needs help to keep up its good work. The Girls Circle program at Goonawarra Neighbourhood House aims to build positive connections between girls, aged nine to 12 years old, who have experienced social difficulties. Weekly activities are overseen by a youth worker, who works with the girls to improve self esteem and body image, and assist with issues such as bullying and social media. Manager Alfina Sinatra said the program’s primary focus is to provide structured support for girls from Sunbury and surrounds. “The girls are referred to us through their schools,” she said. “The group then morphs into a friendship group for them, once we’ve addressed the issues.”

Council signs off on safety call By Esther Lauaki Drivers who choose not to follow advisory speed signs in Macedon Ranges are taking risks too great for council and the community to ignore. Councillors unanimously voted to write to the Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan and VicRoads seeking the replacement of the advisory signs on the Calder Freeway in the Macedon Ranges with variable enforceable speed-limit signs.
The council says that when the advisory 40km/h speed signs are in operation, traffic is travelling at speeds between 40 kilometres and 110 kilometres an hour. Cr Ian Ellis raised concerns that the variation in speeds could some day “end in disaster”. He believed a safer option was to change the advisory signs in adverse weather conditions to enforceable speed-limit signs. “I think it’s a very important issue, not only on the Calder, but on all roads around Victoria,” Cr Ellis said.

“What we have is drivers travelling at vastly different speeds along the same roads because the advisory signs are not enforceable. “The majority of people obey the signs but those who don’t want to [follow the advisory signs] just overtake and speed off.
“Those coming from outside the Macedon Ranges don’t understand the road conditions, especially in winter when we get black ice. This could just end in disaster. “Macedon councillors are calling for enforceable speed signs. “There have been so many accidents on the Calder because of drivers who don’t know how to negotiate the roads.” The penalties for failing to obey regulatory signs and signals include fines and demerit points.
Rockers ready to roll Rock and rollers are set to shimmy along the dance floor at Malmsbury fire brigade’s inaugural Rockabilly Fireball fundraiser next month. Elvis Presley entertainer Mark Andrew will headline the September 3 event at the Malmsbury town hall, which aims to raise money for a second fire truck for the brigade. The ball will round out a day of planned festivities, including a motor festival, all themed around rock‘n’roll and Elvis Presley. Malmsbury brigade fundraising manager Suzanne McDonnell encouraged residents to be part of the action. “We are looking forward to taking Malmsbury back to the ’50s for the day,” she said. “Slick back your hair, show off your blue suede shoes, ruffle up that polka-dot swing dress, and celebrate the start of spring with us.” Brigade secretary Bruce Dolphin said the festival has two main objectives.

No quick fix for waste woes By Esther Lauaki Macedon Ranges council has called for better, more innovative solutions to cut waste and recycle – and is urging development of a regional organics waste processor with its neighbours. It also called for a new tip in the shire, as part of its feedback to the Loddon Mallee Regional Waste and Resource Recovery Group’s implementation plan, which is now out for public comment. In a report to the council’s July meeting,
officers highlighted a number of shortfalls in the plan and called for it to be revised to account for the specific needs and opportunities in the Macedon Ranges which they claim have not been adequately addressed. “This will mean no change is possible from our current practices,” their report said. “There are no economically feasible options for disposal of council’s waste within the Loddon Mallee region. “The plan should identify landfill options for council’s municipal waste, regardless if it is within the Loddon Mallee region or outside
the region. Currently, council does not have access to any landfill site within the shire boundaries. “The waste generated from the municipality is taken to metropolitan landfill,” it stated. The regional plan sets out how waste and resource recovery in the region will be managed over the next 10 years. The need for a regional solution to manage food waste has been identified as a priority. There are no processing facilities in the region to deal with the 7600 tonnes of food organics waste per year at present. That is expected to
grow to 63,300 tonnes of food waste annually when councils introduce kerbside collections. Organic waste currently collected from Loddon Mallee councils is usually disposed of outside the region. The officers’ report also stated that Macedon Ranges council cannot participate in the Detox Your Home program because of a lack of infrastructure to legally dispose of paints and oils. The plan can be viewed online at www. lmwrrg.vic.gov.au. Submissions close on Friday, August 12.
Choose life, doctor urges A Woodend doctor is urging residents to offer the gift of life to people in danger of dying. Brooke Street Medical Centre doctor Richard Bills has encouraged people to find out about organ and tissue donation – part of DonateLife’s week-long annual awareness campaign. About 1600 Australians are on transplant waiting lists at any given time and their chances of survival after a transplant are very good. Dr Bills said organ donation registrations in Woodend and neighbouring Macedon and Mount Macedon are significantly higher than the state average and other towns in the Macedon Ranges shire. “We should all think about whether we wish to donate organs and tissue,” Dr Bills said. “Once we have become informed and made our decision, it’s vital that we both register our decision with the Australian Organ Donor Register and let our loved ones know.”
“This helps family members be confident in supporting the decisions of loved ones, should the situation arise.” Family permission is required before organ donation goes ahead, regardless of whether the dying or deceased person has registered or not. Dr Bills said Brooke Street Medical Centre is proud of its contribution to DonateLife awareness-raising campaigns over the past five years. Council ‘sorry’ for truck dispute By Esther Lauaki

Bouncing back from a tibia stress fracture that sidelined her last year, the Maribyrnong Sports College student powered her way to victory against some of the best talent her age group has to offer. “It was very exciting,” she says. “It was just a great experience to compete against that level of competition and see where I’m really at. “The relay, especially, was a real achievement … we hadn’t met before.” Jessie will take a short break from competitive running before ramping up preparations for school competitions in September.

A Kyneton resident, who escalated his complaint about heavy trucks parking on his street to the ombudsman, says he shouldn’t have had to go so far just to get Macedon Ranges council to act. Dean Trickey complained to the council last month about heavy trucks that were parking outside a bed and breakfast across the road from his Castle Crescent home. He says the trucks restricted his ability to get in and out of his driveway. Local laws restrict heavy and long vehicles from parking in residential areas without a permit. “They had been there for a week, and I complained to the council because they were not moving,” Mr Trickey said. “I’d spoken to council before about the same issue and they said they would look into it, but nothing happened. “I feel like it’s up to residents to know the law and take action for matters to get resolved.” Council initially responded to Mr Trickey’s complaint saying that the large truck that he had described in his email correspondence did not meet the criteria of a heavy or long vehicle. Because of this, the council’s parking restrictions did not apply. Mr Trickey questioned: “When is a heavy truck, not a heavy truck?” “I just wanted them to investigate the matter more and come have a look. “If I hadn’t taken my complaint to the ombudsman, I don’t know if any action would have been taken.” The council has since apologised to Mr Trickey for the way his complaint was handled. A council spokesman said a notice had been issued to the truck owner.

MY PLACE As a volunteer with groups including the SES, CFA and Scouts, Gisborne’s Rex Pilgrim says there’s always something to keep him busy. He talks with Matt Crossman. What’s your tie to the area? How long have you lived here?
What do you enjoy most about your involvement?
I moved to Gisborne in May 2005. I was living in Melbourne, and had moved there in 2000, having moved from Launceston in Tasmania due to work. I moved to Gisborne due to a romantic interest, however that connection didn’t last. During those early days in Gisborne, I joined the CFA, and came to love the town, especially since I was a country boy at heart – and Melbourne city life wasn’t all that agreeable.
I think the camaraderie and friendship within the unit is the most enjoyable thing. But that doesn’t cover it all. While not fun, the rescue of people from crashed cars gives great satisfaction, and being able to help people on a stormy night when they have water running into the house through a hole in the roof also is very satisfying.
It has more shops … the amenities mean that I don’t have to go far to find what I need. For me, the biggest change is the friendships I have made here.
Yes, a lot of people think that we are just a free workforce, but VicSES is an emergency service with considerable community responsibility. This ranges from education talks at schools, to search and rescue and road rescue.
How did you become involved in the SES?
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In 2008, the Gisborne SES was really short of road crash rescue (RCR) officers and asked the CFA for help to fill the gap. I took on the role and realised that there was more to SES than RCR, and expanded my interests. That lead to me becoming the unit personnel protective clothing officer.
Spare time? Outside of SES and being a CFA firefighter, I am a Scout leader with 1st Gisborne Scout Group. I’m also an affiliate member of the Gisborne-Macedon Ranges RSL.
What do you consider among the unit’s/your greatest achievements? The unit’s greatest achievement is in saving lives. My greatest achievement is to be able to contribute to this as part of the team.
What local cafes or restaurants do you like to go to? Since the SES and CFA keep me really busy, and McDonalds is next door, I like to go there. The noodle shop is good for a tasty quick meal. For a nice, sit-down meal La Cibo Cafe is lovely.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir will go to the ends of the earth for a good feed … Jade Stream is tucked away at the railway station end of the cluttered, unlovely part of town still referred to as the Golden Mile. What are we expecting, or hoping for? Just some smart, tasty Cantonese food – nothing innovative or challenging, but something satisfying and of good quality. And that’s pretty much exactly what we get. I’m guessing Jade Stream has been in place for a couple of decades – inside has an air of timelessness and a vibe that speaks of a business that knows what it’s about and has a good handle on its customers. While we’re enjoying our dinner, a handful of tables of various numbers come and go – and all of them appear to be regulars on friendly terms with the staff. We like that. We find the service to be very good. Jade Stream lays some claim to being Chinese-Malaysian, but mostly this is a straight-up Chinese joint. Curry puffs ($5.50) are chubby cylinders and seem rather small. But the fillings are very good – mostly a rich mix of minced meat with some crunch ‘n’ pop from peas. Short soup ($6) has a very good and flavoursome broth with a bit of a peppery kick. There are five slithery, delicious wontons – Bennie’s glinty-eyed enthusiasm wins him three, his dad gets two. Garlic pepper steak ($25.90) also appears of modest proportions, but in this case

There’s nothing particularly garlicky about the sauce, but it is nonetheless rich and wonderful. The beef cubes are big, of high quality and superbly cooked. And we appreciate the many chunks of broccoli. Szechuan eggplant hot pot is a big hit with us and an outright bargain. The smaller diced pieces of eggplant, along side peas, pork mince and chilli, are interspersed with silky, larger eggplant chunks of beaut flavour. At $18.90, and with rice, it could easily serve as a light meal for two. So big is the serve that we eat a little more than half, with the rest and the leftover rice coming home with us for Bennie’s school lunch the next day. With two serves of rice, but no soft drinks, our dinner has cost us a fair $61.30.

2. Make the most of every moment – If you’re finding the mornings too cold and by evening you’re too tired, look for ways to integrate exercise into your day. At lunchtime, throw on a scarf, grab a brolly and go for a brisk 20-minute walk. If you have a meeting with a colleague or a client, consider hitting the streets for a “walk and talk”. Try a lunchtime boxing or yoga class. These breaks will warm you
up and are a great way to revitalise your mind and get you ready for productive afternoons. 3. Stairs (inside and out) – running or walking up and down stairs at home is great cardio, and taking the stairs at work or when shopping can make for a spontaneous workout. Take the stairs instead of the escalators, walk the length of the corridor on that level, and back, then keep on climbing. Even coming downstairs is great exercise for rear leg and butt muscles. 4. Home exercise DVDs or YouTube videos are great sources of motivation and peer support. If you have weights, a skipping rope, a stability ball or any other equipment, you can use them for a full body workout. 5. Don’t let a cold completely cancel your exercise routine – If you don’t feel up to the normal pace, try gentler activities, always remembering to warm up with stretches first. “A LETTER HOME” This past week we have heard so much of the bravery and the enormous sacrifice of the Australian troops at Pozieres. So many young men, the cream of Australia’s youth, who bravely charged the enemy across open land. Sandy Milne is a Sales Consultant here at Chess. He writes: “My dear Wife, I have now got a brief spell and must get a letter to you in case you should become anxious….I am glad to say that the Australian boys have all done gloriously. No men in the world could have done better, better and few are capable of doing so well. I have nothing but admiration for them. They faced the most awful bombardment by shot and shell that the world has ever witnessed with the same bright spirit that they used to show in a foot-ball scrummage.....

SPORT Jets’ men end seven-year drought Sunbury Jets men’s basketball side will play finals for the first time since winning the Big V division 1 championship in 2009. But the Jets, who finished the regular season with their biggest loss of the year, had a few nervous moments waiting for the outcome of other games. Luck went their way as they finished the season in seventh place. Jets coach Andrew Summerville said he was happy to have made the finals in a season which he considered a development year. He said the playing group had come along faster than he expected. “We’re probably ahead of schedule,” he said. “Everyone wants to play finals and win championships but we were looking at making play-offs next season and a championship the season after. “I think the players have grasped what we’re
doing a lot quicker than we expected. They have a high basketball IQ and brought into what we’re doing. “We’re still making a lot of mistakes and have ups and downs but we haven’t had as many downs as I thought we would.” Saturday night was one of those downs, as the Jets crashed 105-66 against Warrnambool. Summerville said it wasn’t something they would like to dwell on. “The endeavour was good and it was a tough physical encounter,” he said. “They are 11-0 at home and we’d have been doing something no one else has done. But being blown out wasn’t what we wanted.” Ish Sanders top-scored for the Jets with 20 points, with Nathan Baker was the only other player in double figures. The Jets will be back on the road this week when they travel to Shepparton.
“We match up well against them,” Summerville said. They’re a tough side with a lot of talent and I’m looking forward to it. “Our chances are really good. You can beat the top team one week and lose to the bottom team the next week. “We’re one of the teams who have beaten the top four sides at least once.” The Jets’ men’s side qualifying for finals means they will have four sides playing in finals for the first time in the club’s history. Both the youth league sides finished in their respective top fours, although the youth league men’s side was knocked out with a loss to Werribee Devils on Saturday night. “The club is pretty proud,” Summerville said. “It shows how far we’ve come; it’s been a massive turnaround.” Tara Murray
United in the drop zone By Tara Murray Sunbury United has five weeks to avoid a second straight relegation in FFV state league competition. Having gone down a division last year, United is second bottom in state league 2 north-west. The bottom two sides will be relegated. United coach Brian Sweeney believes his side is good enough to stay up. “If we can get two wins, we might survive,” he said. “The game against Essendon United [August 13] is crucial – it could decide if we stay up. “If we don’t win it, we don’t deserve to stay up. Relegation will be a blow for the club, but we are strong enough to handle it.” Sweeney, who took over coaching midway through the season, said a lack of confidence was an issue for a side that hasn’t won many matches in the past three years. “We’ve had a few injuries and we’re still figuring out how to gel together,” he said. “It’s going to be tough for the boys. The confidence in the players is very low … I’m trying to get the belief back up. I’ve got very young players who lack experience to finish off teams. “Lack of experience and lack of confidence makes it even harder for them.” Some of United’s best performances this season have come against sides towards the top of the ladder. Sweeney said the pressure of not necessarily expecting to win seemed to do wonders for the players. On Saturday, though, they were disappointing in a 4-1 loss to Hume United. Hume United led 2-0 at half-time after Sunbury missed a penalty just before the break. Sweeney said he saw lots of positives at the club, which is why he wanted to be in the head role long term. Sweeney started the season coaching Altona East Phoenix before moving back to United, a club close to his heart. “I’ve been a part of Sunbury for a long time now,” Sweeney said. “I knew it was going to be a tough gig, but I always believed I could help. “The vision I see for the club is they will be a division 1 club, even an NPL club, in the next five to 10 years. “There’s 200 juniors at the club and that’s what excites me. I want to try to get the junior sides and the pathway into the senior team set up. “Australian player Jamie McLaren grew up in Sunbury but played most of his junior games outside of Sunbury. I want players to play a couple of years of seniors here before moving on.”

New coach leads Rupo’s cup chase New Rupertswood captain-coach Mark Ryan isn’t predicting what the season may hold for the club in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. Rupertswood will return to the McIntyre Cup for the first time since 2012-13, after an emphatic win against St Anthonys in last season’s B-grade grand final. Ryan only has to look at the past two teams promoted – Diggers Rest Bulla and Gisborne – to see what can happen. “It’s a bit of an unknown how we will go,” he said. “Diggers Rest Bulla and Gisborne played off in last year’s grand final, so we’re pretty excited about our chances. We’re not putting a lid on expectations.” Ryan, who was vice-captain last season, takes over the captain-coach role from John Lane, who stood down at the end of last season. The coaching role wasn’t on Ryan’s radar at first. “I had a few work things going on,” he said. “[But] I got to the point where I could take on the role. I’m really humbled by Peter [Kavanagh] and the committee putting faith in me to do the role.” While this will be Ryan’s first coaching job, Lane will still be around the club to offer advice. “Johnny has put a lot of hard work in, and I want to carry on where he left off,” Ryan said. “I’ll be able to bounce ideas off him and Patty Tyler [2014-15 coach]. There’s a wealth of experience around the club.” Ryan said it looked like Lane is the only member from the premiership side not returning to the top team this season. “Apart from Johnny, everyone is coming back,” he said. “We might have a couple of [former] players coming back to the club as well, but nothing is concrete. “We’ve got a really young club, and it’s going to be a good year.” All five Sunbury GDCA clubs have now announced their new coaches for this season. Roos stay in finals race By Tara Murray Sunbury Kangaroos kept in touch with the Riddell District Football League top six with a strong win over Rockbank on Saturday. The Kangaroos did what they had to against the winless Rams in just one of three RDFL matches in the second round of bye weeks. The Kangaroos controlled the game from the first bounce but were left to rue poor kicking, and after 12 scoring shots in the first quarter they had only a 20-point lead to show for it. Although it was a similar story for the rest of the match, the win was never in doubt and the Roos got home 12.24 (96)-3.5 (23). Ryan Pretty kicked four goals and veteran Jamie Cuffe three for the winners. Michael Greenwood, Mark Stevens and Jared Warwick kicked the goals for the Rams. The Kangaroos’ Zane Williams continued his return to form and was named best on ground. Stevens was best for the Rams. The win moves the Kangaroos to within a game of sixth-placed Wallan, after the Magpies lost to second-placed Macedon. The Magpies pushed the Cats all the way in difficult scoring conditions but eventually went down 8.7 (55)-7.6 (48). After trailing by 22 points at quarter-time, the Magpies kicked six goals in the second quarter to hold an eight-point lead starting the second half. But they were held to just five points for the rest of the match and that proved costly. Riddell defeated Woodend-Hesket 10.16 (76)-7.2 (44) in the other match. This weekend sees the league return to a full complement of matches.

The Riddell District Football Netball League grand final day will be at Romsey Park again this year. The league announced all senior finals venues last week, with Romsey chosen to host the biggest day for a third straight year. The preliminary final will be at Lancefield Park, while Macedon’s Tony Clarke Oval, Woodend-Hesket’s Gordon Gilbert Oval, Wallan’s Greenhill Reserve and Sunbury Kangaroos’ Boardman Reserve are the other finals locations.

Riddell and Macedon recorded easy wins in the only two Riddell District Netball League matches on Saturday. The two finals-bound teams had no issues accounting for Woodend-Hesket and Wallan respectively. The Bombers rotated players around in their 73-21 win against the Hawks, while the Cats beat the Magpies 80-17. Jets take winning momentum into finals Having completed the regular Big V basketball season undefeated, Sunbury Jets are quickly turning their attention to finals and their championship ambitions. With top spot secured several weeks ago, the Jets continued on their merry way in the final rounds of the season to have an average winning margin of more than 30 points for the year. In the final weekend of the season, the Jets had big wins against Craigieburn Eagles and Keilor Thunder. The Eagles were no match for the Jets on Saturday night, but the Thunder made more of a game of it on Sunday. Jets coach Kennedy Kereama was pleased to have had a hard hit out against the Thunder in the 90-56 win. “We expected that,” he said after the game. “They had a lot to play for with three players
retiring at the end of the game. They are a good side … I think they are a better side than their results show for the season.” Most pleasing for the Jets was their third quarter, in which they restricted the Thunder to seven points. Four of those came in the last minute and a half of the term. Defence and offensive rebounds were the highlights for the Jets in that quarter. “We really focus a lot on our defence – that’s something we want to pride ourselves on,” Kereama said. “We’ve been the best defensive team all season … if we keep doing that, we’re going to give ourselves a chance to win the championship. “We got 20 offensive boards for the game which is pretty damn good … I think what made it better was our ability to score off those boards.” The big margins at the weekend meant the
Jets were able to give every player court time on both Saturday and Sunday. Kereama said that while it was nice to have gone through the regular season undefeated, it would mean little if that didn’t continue in the finals. “It’s nice and I think the girls had a 10 second chat about it – that’s it,” he said. “We want to continue doing that … we go back to one of our values, be consistent.” The Jets have the week off in the first round of the finals before facing the lowest-placed winner from the semi-finals. “We get a week off, but we’re going to train and go through the processes,” Kereama said. “We’re going to play a game against Hume City state championship women’s team, who are also on top of their ladder.” Tara Murray
Thunder misses chance By Tara Murray East Sunbury’s inability to close out its match against Roxburgh Park on Saturday has all but ended the side’s finals hopes in Essendon District Football League division 2. Needing to beat the ladder-leaders to stay in finals’ contention, the Thunder were left to rue giving up a 20-point lead in the final quarter. The Magpies didn’t need to be asked twice, and converted their chances late to win 11.5 (71)-8.9 (57). Thunder’s coach Steve Grey said they had chances to seal the win. They managed to keep the Magpies goal-less in the first quarter and restricted them to one goal in the third quarter. “We definitely had our chances but didn’t take them,” Grey said. “At a time in the game when we needed to good with the ball we were turning the ball over, and our kicking efficiency was not up to it. We were 20 points up and they went to another level. “We couldn’t go with them. We’ve still got to learn how to finish off games. It’s a great learning curve going forward.” Grey said while the loss was disappointing, it was also an indication of how far the side has come. “We played them twice last year and lost by 80 and 100 points,” he said. “The first time we played them this year we lost by 60 to 70 points, and then it was five goals the next time, and this time 14 points. “We are getting closer and closer to the top side. We’ve been competitive.” Jason King was the only multiple goalkicker for the Thunder, with three goals. Michael Stewart was named best in the loss. Mathematically, the Thunder is still in finals contention, but it would require everything to go its way – it needs wins against Keilor Park and Coburg Districts, and for the win-less Burnside Heights to beat Keilor Park. It would also depend on Jacana’s results. Grey said the side is resigned to missing finals. “We still have to finish the year off and be competitive,” he said. “If we can finish the season 8-10, I’d be pretty happy with that. “I said at the start of the season that six wins would be par. I was hoping for at least seven wins this year and at 12 wins next year, and … finals.” While the senior side is unlikely to make the end game, the club will still feature in finals for the first time since fielding senior teams. The under-18 side sits on top of the ladder undefeated and looks the team to beat. The reserves side has also secured a finals spot.

Four into two doesn’t add up The race for the last two finals spots in the Bendigo Netball League looks like going down to the final round. Kangaroo Flat, Sandhurst and Golden Square have all but sealed the top three spots and will likely fight out those positions. But the last two positions in the final five aren’t so clear, with four sides in contention and only two points separating fourth and seventh with four rounds left. Gisborne is currently in fourth spot, only percentage ahead of Maryborough and Strathfieldsaye. The Bulldogs jumped above Maryborough on Saturday after beating Castlemaine 75-13. Maryborough lost the game break it had on the chasing teams, losing to top side Kangaroo Flat 46-42 on Saturday. Strathfieldsaye ensured it stayed with the pack by beating South Bendigo 53-41. Sitting two points further back is Kyneton, which showed it could more than match it with the top sides by drawing with Kangaroo Flat the week before. But the Tigers had to fight hard against Eaglehawk at the weekend. They trailed by two goals at three-quarter time before shutting down Eaglehawk’s attack to win 50-46. Hayley Page scored 29 goals and Michelle Fletcher 21 for the Tigers. The closeness of the ladder means this week’s match between Kyneton and Gisborne takes on extra significance. The fight for a finals spot in senior football is just as close, with Kyneton slipping outside the top five after a 20.13 (133)-8.9 (57) loss to Eaglehawk. The Tigers struggled to find the scoreboard in the second half, with the Hawks kicking 13 goals to four. Nathan Thompson kicked four goals in the loss. The Tigers and Hawks switch positions on the ladder, with the Hawks having a much better percentage. Gisborne suffered another loss, going down 12.10 (82)-4.16 (40) to Castlemaine. The Bulldogs could muster only one goal in the first half as both teams struggled with accuracy in front of goal. The second half was a lot closer, with the Bulldogs winning the half by a point.
