Improved starts could be the thing that puts young Riddells Creek sprinter Jessie Andrew in the selection conversation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Already known for her powerful running through the middle of races, the 16-year-old is fine-tuning her routine ahead of the Oceania Melanesian regional championships in Fiji from July 7-9. Jessie, who spends close to two hours a day travelling by train between Riddells Creek and the Maribyrnong Sports Academy, says she’s confident that work with coach Darren Clark will pay dividends. She will compete in the 200 metres and possibly the 4 x 100 metres relay in Suva. “It’s a big opportunity for me,” the year 10 student says. “This is a great chance to prove myself against some really good international opposition.” Jessie has bounced back from a tibia stress fracture that sidelined her last year. But it’s her work to achieve more momentum out of the blocks that’s poised to take her to another level. Clark says Jessie is among the top runners in her age group. ‘‘If we can iron out her starts, it will put her right at the pointy end of things,’’ he says. Matt Crossman
$2m learning hub pledge By Matt Crossman Federal Liberal candidate Chris Jermyn is being urged to match Labor’s $2 million commitment to a global lifelong learning centre at Sunbury. As reported by Star Weekly online, plans for the hi-tech education hub have been given a major lift, with deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek and McEwen MP Rob Mitchell pledging their support last Wednesday. Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou, who has previously said the centre would be hard to build without federal money, called on the Liberal Party to match the commitment. ‘‘Council is prepared to work with any government … we need to get the best we can
for this community,’’ she said, adding the hub would help generations of Sunbury residents. “This is a place that will symbolise an exciting future for Sunbury and it will prepare many people for great careers and enable them to shape the lives they desire,’’ she said. Ms Plibersek, the second senior Labor MP to visit Sunbury in recent weeks, chatted with users at the town’s ageing library in Macedon Street. She inspected the library’s 3D printer, robotic equipment and traditional services before announcing Labor’s support for the new centre. She said the learning hub, to be built on a 4083-square-metre site next to the library, was
bought by the council for $1.885 million in February. The proposed global learning centre [GLC] will include a state-of-the-art library, high-tech resources and function areas for seminars and community groups, and will help push the boundaries of digital learning, giving young people a head start and offering older workers the chance to retrain. ‘‘I think the council is taking the right approach here,’’ Ms Plibersek said. ‘‘They’ve got a real focus on digital learning and opportunities, not just for young people but for people right through their working lives. ‘‘We know that lifelong learning is an important part of economic development for
any region. Jobs change, industries change … people want to be able to take on new learning opportunities,’’ Ms Plibersek applauded the council’s focus on building partnerships with higher-education providers, and said the GLC would be central to the community’s continued growth. Mr Mitchell said Hume’s existing global learning centres showed how important they were. ‘‘Labor talks about putting people first, and this is a great example,’’ he said. ‘‘We know that if we can get people in a good environment where they can get educated, they will go on and give an economic benefit to our community, and go on to have better lives.’’ Mr Jermyn did not respond by deadline.

Crisis call in Ranges solar push By Matt Crossman The creation of an interest-free loan scheme to help Macedon Ranges ratepayers switch to solar power could revolutionise the area’s approach to energy use, according to a leading environmental group. In a submission to this year’s draft council budget, Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group president Ralf Thesing praised “overdue” expenditure on LED lighting, solar panels and other efficiency measures. But he said consideration should be given to the introduction of a solar panel loan scheme
similar to one offered by Darebin council and through which people pay off 10 per cent of the total cost each year for 10 years. ‘‘It would allow people to have quality systems installed and pay it off via their rates notice over time, instead of facing a large upfront cost,’’ Mr Thesing said. ‘‘People will also be saving money every month.’’ He warned that the threat of climate change was no longer something that was way off in the future. ‘‘The crisis is happening,’’ he said, pointing to record heat at the start of this year following years of extreme temperatures.

‘‘Children being born now are likely to live to 2100 and the forecasted temperatures for 2100 are absolutely frightful.’’ Mr Thesing said projections were especially relevant to the Macedon Ranges ‘‘because it has so much to lose’’. ‘‘We have such an amazing environment,’’ he said.
‘‘So many people say that’s why they come and live here.’’ Mr Thesing also pointed to the dangers of increased bushfire risks. ‘‘The council really needs to give some clear direction,’’ he said. “It needs to show the way.’’ Mr Thesing also urged the council to spend more on bicycle and pedestrian path infrastructure. A council spokeswoman did not respond by deadline. The council will meet to adopt the budget on June 22.

Hume councillor Jack Medcraft has called on the state government to get a move on with fixing the intersection of Gap Road and Horne Street in Sunbury. Cr Medcraft said residents ‘‘don’t buy’’ claims that it will take 12-18 months to acquire the land needed to widen the approach roads to the intersection, as part of a $6.4 million project to replace the roundabout with traffic lights. ‘‘Politicians … they do this all the time. They make an announcement and then they announce it again,’’ Cr Medcraft said. ‘‘They need to put it in now.’’ But Sunbury MP Josh Bull said Sunbury has had enough of ‘‘negativity and posturing’’, while Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said work would start mid to late next year. “For four years the Liberals ignored the Gap Road-Horne Street intersection; in less than 18 months in office we have funded it,” Mr Bull told Star Weekly. Mr Donnellan said the land purchase was only “a small component” of a project that also entailed moving underground cables and pipes. Cr Medcraft said he would ask Hume councillors to pressure the government to finish the project before the next state election, on November 24, 2018. ‘‘If you’re going to make the announcement and get all the coverage and brownie points, then you have to back it up with action,” Cr Medcraft said. “VicRoads will deliver the project well and truly before the next state election,” Mr Bull said.

History in the making

A Gisborne resident who fought to protect the area’s heritage has created a little bit of history of her own, being one of several Macedon Ranges residents to be presented with Queen’s Birthday honours. Phyllis Boyd, long-time president and secretary of the Gisborne and Mount Macedon Districts Historical Society, was recognised with an Order of Australia medal for her service to heritage preservation. ‘‘Before we know where we’re going, we have to know where we came from,’’ she said of her motivation. Mrs Boyd and her husband, Ian, moved to Gisborne almost 30 years ago, having long travelled to the area for weekends away. With a keen interest in family history, Mrs Boyd soon threw herself into heritage issues, and went on to become a founding member of the Macedon Ranges Heritage Council after council amalgamations in the mid 1990s. ‘‘It’s always been very obvious to me that, once we got sewerage and natural gas, Gisborne was going to grow,’’ Mrs Boyd said. ‘‘It was inevitable.’’ Mrs Boyd has also had long stints as president of the Gisborne Regional Events and Tourism Association (GREAT) and Mount Macedon Business Association. She has written three coffee table books on the heritage of the area and continues to pass on local history as a guide for walking tours. ‘‘I just love sharing information and knowledge,’’ the former teacher said.

Macedon Ranges Health president and former Western Water director John Wauchope, of Mount Macedon, was recognised for his service to the insurance industry, including stints as chairman of the Recoveries Corporation and the Australian Insurance Association’s state branch.
A Romsey man who has dedicated decades to the recognition of veterans has been honoured with an Order of Australia medal. But Mike Garnett, who was also integral to the successful push for a fountain commemorating the centenary of Federation in 2001, maintains the award belongs to the many people who’ve helped him along the way. ‘‘The Macedon Ranges is a great place to contribute to community affairs,’’ he said. ‘‘Each town has its own distinctive and historic identity.’’ Mr Garnett was also recognised for his service to tennis, having been a member of the Australian Davis Cup Federation since 1994, chief executive of the Royal Melbourne Tennis Club from 1994-99, and a founding committee
member of Romsey Tennis Club in 1999. He also represented Australia at over 50s, 60s and 70s team events from 1998-2015, and has authored a number of books. But it’s his work commemorating the efforts of veterans that has given the former national serviceman and Air Force reservist the most joy. Mr Garnett walked the Sandakan death march in Borneo in 2008, raising money for the local medical centre to buy defibrillators, and helped establish a rose garden at Romsey’s war memorial in 2004. He’s also been a Kyneton RSL committee member since 2012 and helped raise funds for that town’s Light Horse memorial. Matt Crossman

Call to end parking pain By Matt Crossman Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas has been asked to support attempts to solve Sunbury’s carparking crisis, with research showing close to half the vehicles parked in the train station’s long-term bays are registered to people from her electorate. A study by geotechnical and environmental service experts Cardno, after the electrification of the Sunbury line in 2012, found more than 40 per cent of cars using the station carpark were from the Macedon Ranges. Hume councillor Jack Medcraft said Ms
Thomas had a duty to lobby for parking upgrades. ‘‘She can’t turn around and say it’s not my area,’’ Cr Medcraft said. ‘‘She’s responsible for the people in her area, many of whom are using the Metro service. ‘‘We would ask her to push the [transport] minister to make sure parking is improved.’’ As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, commuters, traders and employees are being urged to sign a new petition calling on the state government to act. A Gisborne man, 29, will face a string of charges, including aggravated burglary, after allegedly breaking into a house last Tuesday. Detective Sergeant Steve Cole said the man was arrested after allegedly attempting to tie up a person, known to them, in order to extort them.
Stolen goods recovered
Jewellery and two cars were recovered among stolen goods valued at more than $20,000 after police pulled over a stolen vehicle in Woodend on June 7. An Airport West man, 23, was remanded in custody while a Tylden man, 21, was bailed to face court.
Crash clues sought
Investigations continue into a two-car crash on Melbourne-Lancefield Road, Bolinda, on June 6. Police say a man, 48, was trapped in a car for more than an hour after a car allegedly went through a stop sign about 5.50pm. The injured man was taken to The Alfred in a stable condition. Another man, 44, was discharged from Royal Melbourne Hospital after receiving treatment.

Pressure builds for Bulla bypass By Matt Crossman

New traffic counts reveal the number of vehicles using choked and undivided Sunbury Road continues to soar. Reiterating Hume council’s call for state and federal authorities to act, mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said 24,395 vehicles were using the road north of Melbourne Airport every day. More than 2600 extra vehicles are now travelling through Bulla, up 12.4 per cent from last year, and the council has been pushing for the duplication of Sunbury Road and construction of a Bulla bypass. ‘‘These vehicles must negotiate the narrow bridge which traverses across Deep Creek, and it can be a very dangerous commute,’’ Cr Patsikatheodorou said. Lancefield’s Gary Allen is among those who have started taking the long way round, via rural Konagaderra Road, in a bid to avoid Bulla’s peak hour traffic snarls. ‘‘I used to get to the [Sunbury Road] roundabout at 5.30am and there’d be so much traffic going that way,’’ he said. ‘‘Especially through Bulla … it’s just a lot easier to avoid it completely.’’ Cr Patsikatheodorou warned things would get worse, with plans for 14,000 new houses east of Sunbury and thousands of extra homes on Melbourne-Lancefield Road. VicRoads regional director Vince Punaro previously said plans are under way for a link between Melbourne Airport and the future outer metropolitan ring road, including a bypass of Bulla. ‘‘The Melbourne Airport link and Bulla bypass is … a long-term project and will ultimately consist of six traffic lanes and include off-road shared bicycle and pedestrian paths.’’
A new study will focus on how commuting to work in Melbourne could be changing regional Victorian towns. Todd Denham, of RMIT University’s Centre for Urban Research, is undertaking his doctorate on the increasing numbers of people traveling from regional Victoria to Melbourne for work. Mr Denham, who lived in Castlemaine for a number of years, said he began to question why some regional towns were developing more rapidly than others. “Places like Melton, Ballan, Gisborne, Woodend, parts of Werribee and Whittlesea, have changed dramatically over the past few years,” he said. “A key aspect of my study looks at people who are commuting to Melbourne to earn more money in the city, and then bringing that money back home to spend in their regional town, and the growth that results from that. “But there is another, more important factor to consider. Do commuters tire of the two to three-hour travel into Melbourne and look to start working closer to home? “This becomes particularly important … if it leads to the formation of new businesses.” Mr Denham has created an online survey to gather more data. Fight over roo cull

By Matt Crossman Authorities have suspended a permit to cull kangaroos on a property adjoining a Pastoria East rescue shelter after activists slammed the way in which the native animals were being killed. A probe was launched after at least 24 kangaroos were shot on the first night of the cull last week. Groups including the Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network claimed not one kangaroo had been shot in the head as dictated by a national code of practice. The claim was denied by the landholder, who also rejected reports that joeys had been left to die from exposure. But the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) put a stop to shooting on Thursday following a large public outcry. The department, which found itself in hot water after a planned burn in the nearby Cobaw Ranges broke containment lines last October, had earlier maintained that the cull was justified. It said non-lethal control methods had been unable to stop considerable damage to the farmer’s fences and pastures. Pastoria East Wildlife Shelter operators Marcus Ward and Christine Litchfield, who late last month released the last kangaroo nursed back to health following the Cobaw blaze, had vowed to do everything possible to stop the cull. Ms Litchfield said it was possible that kangaroos which survived the Cobaw bushfire would be shot. ‘‘That’s a fire that was lit by the department,’’ she said. ‘‘We have rehabilitated about five burnt kangaroos and released them here. It’s absolutely heartless.’’

Mr Ward said thousands of dollars had been spent on the kangaroos’ rehabilitation. A DELWP spokesman said all non-lethal methods of control had been exhausted. ‘‘Wildlife officers inspected the applicant’s property and found significant damage to pastures and fences due to kangaroos,’’ he said.
‘‘DELWP officers have spoken to both the applicant and the owner of the adjacent wildlife shelter and have listened to their concerns. ‘‘It is a critical time of year for the applicant to germinate his pasture and therefore the issuing of an [order] is time critical to ensure a successful growing season.’’
Hanging Rock has been selected as a possible site for the filming of a major US TV series. In what’s being billed as a Hollywood coup that will pump about $20 million into the Victorian economy, the state government signed off on a production deal with HBO and Warner Bros last week. A spokeswoman for Premier Daniel Andrews, who announced the deal for the third season of The Leftovers in Los Angeles on Saturday, said scouting continued on other potential sites. ‘‘This brilliant production won’t just attract some of tinsletown’s biggest stars, but create local jobs and inject millions into the Victorian economy,’’ Mr Andrews said. Macedon Ranges deputy mayor John Connor said there had been no formal approach to date. ‘‘But we would welcome discussions with the producers,’’ he said. ‘‘These kinds of events bring the shire’s wonderful natural attractions to the attention of a worldwide audience.’’ The Leftovers, created by Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof, is a drama that explores a world in shock after 140 million people vanish. About six million people in the US watched every episode of the show’s second season. Filming is expected to take about six months and will start in July. SPORT Ball in Grabham’s hands By Tara Murray Heading into Saturday’s Big V all-star origin game, Sunbury Jets’ Josh Grabham was looking forward to playing against one player more than any other: his Jets’ division 1 teammate Mitchell Newton. “It’s pretty competitive with Mitch,” Grabham said before the match. “There’s been a little bit of banter going on.” In fact, Grabham had the last laugh with the country cousins taking the win 82-74. Coming off the bench, Grabham scored two points and had two rebounds, while Newton scored three points and had five rebounds for the metro side. Grabham was surprised to be selected in the inaugural origin game, which selects players from all three men’s and youth league divisions. “It’s pretty cool,” he said. “It’s new this year and it seems to be a good thing. I want to be part of it for years to come.” Grabham said he’d had a rough idea who he’d be playing against. “They’ve got some different skills and they are players I want to learn off. “It was a bit of a surprise to be nominated, and [it] feels pretty good they [the club] has faith in me.” Selection in the metro-origin side caps off a big 12 months for the 17-year-old, who thought this year would be spent with the Jets’ youth side. Last year, he played one division 1 match. “I thought I was playing youth league this year, but I spent the pre-season training with the senior team. “And they selected me! “It’s great to get that experience playing in the seniors. “Everything is a bit quicker. The coaches have helped develop my skills and my game.” The move into the seniors also means a change of position for Grabham. “I’ve been playing point guard so I’ve had to improve my vision,” he said. “I played a little bit of point guard last year but was more on a wing. “I’ve got to run sets for Ish [Sanders], and I want to get the ball to him and get the assist. “It’s about getting it to him in the right spot.” It isn’t just at the Jets that the Gisborne Secondary College year 12 student demonstrates his talent. In August, he will represent Victoria’s 18-and-under team at the School Sport Australia basketball championships. “It’s pretty cool to be selected in the top 10 players in the state,” he said. After the weekend off, the Jets return to the court this weekend. The women’s side faces Latrobe City on Saturday night at Boardman Stadium, while the men travel to Melton on Sunday.
Lions find how tough life is at the top Sunbury Lions were given a footballing lesson by Lake Wendouree in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. The top-of-the-table clash proved to be a fizzer as the Lakers ended the Lions’ run of five straight wins. Only a point separated the two sides 10 minutes into the second quarter, before the Lakers kicked six goals straight. It was much the same in the second half as the Lakers continued their unbeaten start with an 18.14 (122)-8.10 (58) win. “It was a reality check,” Lions coach Rick Horwood said. “They capitalised on our mistakes and we went away from what we wanted to do. They gave us a footballing lesson. “It’s a good time to happen and we can learn from it and fix it.” Horwood said only about eight of his players did well. “You won’t win too many games with that many contributing,” he said. “Some blokes got found out. Some who had been playing well against lesser sides, didn’t play well this week.” David Kovacevic, Trent Stead, Jack Sullivan (three goals), Dwain Sanderson and Mathew Medcraft were the best for the Lions. Horwood said the loss wasn’t the end of the world. “It was about playing for top spot and in the last two years we’ve been playing for survival mode and just trying to make finals,” he said. “This was the first time playing for something above that.” Reece Wood, who suffered an asthma attack, was the only medical concern from the game. But James Rizk fractured his foot and Tim Hill rolled his ankle in the reserves. The Lions, who have the bye this week, are third on the ladder with six wins and losses to the top two sides, the Lakers and Bacchus Marsh. They face East Point and North Ballarat City in a crucial two weeks after the bye. “The bye has come at a good time,” Horwood said. “We can analyse where we are at. At 6-2 it’s a fair assessment of where we are. “We wanted to climb the ladder and at this stage we’ve done that. “We tried something different on Saturday and did a lot of our pre-game things on Thursday night. We’ll assess whether that worked.”

Lions get their mojo back as the building continues Sunbury Lions have returned to the winners’ list with a vital win over fellow top-six side Lake Wendouree in the Ballarat Netball League. The Lions started the season with five straight wins against lower sides but lost the next two against teams towards the top of the ladder. On Saturday against the Lakers, who entered the game with only one loss for the year, the Lions extended their lead at every break, winning 43-36. Defender Rachael Dovaston was best on court, while the first-time shooting combination of Amy Starzer (27 goals) and Laura Carland (16) were the other standouts. had been tough at times this year. “It’s coming together slowly with a lot of young players in the team,” she said. “It’s a building year, which is tough as we’ve always been competitive. We know with a couple more additional recruits we’re not far off.” Anstey said the likes of Dovaston and Sally Portbury had impressed in their first seasons with the club. “Rachael, from Ballarat, has been brilliant in the defensive end,” she said. “Sally comes in having played VNL a couple of years ago. She’s learning, too, and taking direction from Prue [Stanley] in the mid-court.”
The attacking end is a part of the court the Lions are still looking to get right, with Anstey saying the club is on the hunt for another goaler to add to the squad. Anstey said Carland, who also plays in a Parkville midweek competition, had played a couple of games with the Lions while also fulfilling other commitments. “She’s young and eager to learn,” Anstey said. “I think she’s pretty keen to play more games for us and we’re happy for her to play.” Meanwhile, Anstey is hoping Starzer will play enough games for the Lions to pass the finals qualification threshold. Starzer normally plays on Saturdays with Rupertswood in the Riddell District Netball
League. Starzer’s Rupertswood teammate, Ailish McCormack, also played for the Lions on Saturday. The Lions, coached so far by senior players, hope to have their regular coach, Karen Meredith, back on the sidelines in August. Meredith has been coaching school netball on Saturdays. The fourth-placed Lions have a bye this week then face the top two teams, East Point and North Ballarat City, in the next two rounds. “We will learn a lot from them and where we sit compared with those on top of the ladder,” Anstey said. Brown ready to take his second chance After last year’s state combine, Calder Cannons’ Karl Brown realised he had a lot of work to do if he wanted to make the AFL. He had shown glimpses of what he could do, with an eight-goal performance against Northern Knights the standout moment. But Brown knew his highlights reel would not be good enough to see him drafted. “The state combine was something I was unprepared for,” he said last week. “I didn’t work hard enough. I worked harder this pre-season and I won’t take it for granted if I get the chance again. I want to test better than last year.” Despite being eligible to play open-age football, Brown decided his immediate future remained with the Cannons as a 19-year-old. Callum Moore, who followed a similar path before being rookie-listed by Richmond, is one player Brown looks up to.
“I was always going to go back to the Cannons as they have looked after me and I think it’s the best chance for me to play my best football and get selected on an AFL list,” Brown said. “I spoke with Kytey [regional manager Ian Kyte] and I didn’t look back.” The decision to stay with the Cannons has so far proved to be the right one, with Brown selected in the Vic Metro side for the National Championships. Brown was named at full-forward in their opening round match of the carnival against Vic Country on Monday. His Cannons teammate, Hayden Blythe, was named in the back pocket. Making the team compensates for some of the disappointment of last season, when injury ruined Brown’s chances of making the final squad. “It’s obviously a good feeling and something
I’ve always wanted to do,” Brown said. “Last year I was in the top 50 and then I did my knee and that put me out of the carnival. I just want to play my best football and take on the challenge to play at the next level. ” Brown, who is mixing work and study this year, says playing a few games in the VFL later in the season is also a possibility. “It’s not something we’ve really spoken about,” he said. “We’re focusing on the carnival first. Thunder’s three cheers By Tara Murray East Sunbury’s win over Jacana on Saturday in Essendon District Football League division 2 was a big moment for the club. It’s the first time the senior side has defeated a club other than Burnside Heights and Keilor Park – and it was the first time the side had won three games in a row since fielding a senior side in 2013. East Sunbury jumped out of the blocks on Saturday but the Jaguars hit back to close the margin to a point at quarter-time. Early in the second quarter, the Jaguars had all the play down their end of the field but couldn’t convert. The tide turned the Thunder’s way just before half-time and they increased their lead. For most of the second half, it was all the Thunder. They increased the lead at each break, eventually winning 17.9 (111)-10.7 (67). Thunder coach Steve Grey said the club needed a win like that. “Going forward, three in a row is fantastic – it’s about getting the momentum going now,” he said. He said the team’s confidence was growing with each win and that a couple of changes had paid dividends. “I probably rotated the players a lot more than I normally do today, as we’ve struggled to run out games,” he said. “It’s an area that we’ve looked at the last few weeks and it was probably helped by having four 18-year-olds coming in with fresh legs. “The last three weeks, we’ve been moving the ball a lot better … decision making and hitting targets has improved by probably 40 per cent.” Grey was full of praise for the four under-18 players – brothers Jaxon and Corey Mobilio, Thomas Cree and Lachlan Byrne – none of whom looked out of their depth. “What they do on the football field is fantastic,” he said. “They showed some of the senior players how it’s done.” Grey said there was plenty of hard work ahead and he hoped having more depth and a fitter playing group would hold the side in good stead for the rest of the season. “We’ve got a couple of good tests ahead,” he said. “We’ve got East Keilor and then Moonee Valley – they are the next hurdles.” The Thunder are fifth on the ladder, one game outside the top four.

Year of the Burras as all teams fire With Diggers Rest yet to hit its straps this season, the other Riddell District Football League sides can only hope it doesn’t happen any time soon. Ahead of the Queen’s Birthday weekend bye, the Burras are one of only two undefeated sides. Burras coach Shaun Sims says it’s a positive start, but they haven’t been playing their best football. “The seniors haven’t hit their straps,” he said. “We’re doing enough to get over the line and the trick is to get into good habits. “We’ve played some decent football at times. Being one of the top sides, clubs want to beat us and I think it’s that and a bit of us getting used to playing together. “We’ve had a fairly solid start, playing four of the other finalists from last year. There are no easy games this year. “Our second half against WoodendHesket was the best football we’ve played.” One the biggest positives for the Burras, after losing the past three grand finals, is the numbers pushing for senior selection. “There are about five or six players out from last year’s team, and we’ve only brought in two walk-up starts in Cale Morton and Taylor Hine,” Sims said. “We’ve been fairly lucky with injuries until the past week or so. Changes have been through form, and we’ve got some real talent in the twos. “Guys who are playing in the twos and are performing are going to get games.” The club has focused on injecting youth into the side as it looks to the future. “We’ve had six players under 20 play, and it’s a real positive for the club,” Sims said. “Last year, we were a fairly older list. This year … [younger players] are coming in and playing well. Josh Wallace, Corey Wright and Chris Samagalski have all played seniors.” Sims said it was a good feeling to have only one loss among the club’s three sides. The Burras’ reserves are undefeated on top of the ladder, while the under-18.5s are second, having lost just once, to undefeated Rupertswood. Meanwhile, Burras’ gun Jason Williams is one of 15 players in the running for an AFL rookie contract on TV show The Recruit. Williams, who wasn’t expected to play many RDFL games due to VFL commitments, has played twice for the Burras this season. The Burras this week face bottom side Rockbank. MOTOR Mazda 2 makes big impression By David Bonnici

Inside This feels pretty roomy for a compact car. The front seats are comfortable. Legroom is at a premium in the back but there’s plenty of arm and headroom for two adults. As you’d expect from Mazda, the interior is well put together. The interior designs of many small cars go too far in trying to appeal to younger drivers but this has a nice general appeal to it. For the driver, the Mazda 2 Maxx has extras such as the seven-inch touch screen that sits on the dash in place of the standard entertainment unit with buttons in the base-model Neo. The main gauge cluster in front of the steering wheel looks good, though the LCD displays on either side of the speedometer that show the tacho, fuel contents and trip computer info can be difficult to see on a bright day. The entertainment system syncs quickly to your phone or device via Bluetooth, the reversing camera is clear and the in-built

Little cars with a boot aren’t normally as popular as the hatch versions but I reckon Mazda is on a winner with the Mazda 2 sedan. For a start, it looks good. The boot doesn’t look like an afterthought and it has more than a passing resemblance to it’s graceful Mazda 3 and 6 siblings. Its form is matched by function with a huge (for its class) 440-litre cargo area hidden under a small boot lid considerably bigger than the 250-litre cargo area at the back of the hatch.

satnav works fine. The touch screen can be hard to reach while driving so there’s a little control knob on the centre console that’s easy enough to use. It does take a while to input your destination into the satnav. There are buttons on the steering wheel to control volume and select songs, radio stations and entertainment mode, as well as phone, trip
computer and cruise control. The air-conditioner is how I like it – nice and simple – and it’s pretty powerful for a little car. There isn’t too much storage in the centre console – one of my first-world pet hates is when a car has push-button start but nowhere convenient to leave your keys while you drive. Driving For this rev head, compact cars aren’t usually the most exciting to test drive but I quite enjoyed driving the Mazda 2. It goes well, has nimble steering but doesn’t feel as floaty as some small cars. It even has a throaty, sports-car-like exhaust note. The 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, SKYACTIV-Drive petrol engine is more than enough and is quiet economical despite revving well beyond 2000rpm at 100km/h in sixth gear. The manual version I drove was zippy. The gear shifting felt a little loose and it was a little too easy to accidentally slip into reverse gear – not much fun at traffic lights. It has i-stop which stops the car when idling. I don’t usually like this feature but I must admit that when I first picked it up, I didn’t realise it was even engaged as the engine is so quiet. The engine starts instantaneously when you lift your foot off the brake. Safety features include hill-start assist and Smart City Brake Support, which senses a potential collision and primes the brakes so the car stops quicker when you stomp on the pedal. If you’re too slow, it will stop automatically to reduce the impact. Mazda 2 pricing starts at $16,990 drive-away for the Neo and $19,690 for the Maxx.
