Izzy’s lonely battle Like most toddlers, Izzy adores The Wiggles and regularly dresses up in a tutu and yellow skivvy to dance along to Rock-A-Bye Your Bear. She also loves Disney’s Frozen and relishes the chance to take off goofy Olaf the snowman. Sometimes she’s shy, other times she’s outgoing and zany. But unlike others her age, the Sunbury girl, almost two, has Bloom syndrome, a rare condition characterised by short stature, predisposition to cancer, genomic instability and a facial rash caused by exposure to the sun. More than $5000 has been raised to help Izzy and mum Kirsty Ciantar attend a conference in the US, where she will be able to meet experts and other kids like her for the first time. It’s about half what’s needed to make this month’s trip a reality, with Izzy’s condition leading to elevated travel insurance costs. ‘‘She’s the only known case in Australia at the moment,” Ms Ciantar says. Izzy weighs just 6kg and wears clothes made for three-month-old babies. She can rarely venture outdoors before sunset and often sits by the window, watching as other families go for walks. When they absolutely have to go out during the day, Ms Ciantar covers Izzy in sunscreen, a hat, long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect as much skin as possible. Izzy’s low immune system means she gets sick easily, so she can’t go to playgroup or spend much time with other kids. Ms Ciantar says Izzy’s diagnosis last year came as an immense shock. ‘‘It was hard to hear,’’ she says. ‘‘I was so emotional, crying constantly, stressed, in denial. It just didn’t seem fair.’’ Complications were first picked up in the womb and Izzy was born premature, weighing just 1.47 kilogram. But aside from her small stature and a propensity to get sick more than other babies, she was on track with other milestones. While going for a walk in 2014, Ms Ciantar noticed Izzy’s lips were pale and her face was red. Doctors initially suspected a cold sore, but her lip eventually split and was constantly bleeding. A trip to the Royal Children’s Hospital and extensive genetic testing eventually found that Izzy had Bloom syndrome. ‘‘The last thing any parent wants to be told is that you will outlive your child,’’ Ms Ciantar says. ‘‘But that’s the truth in this. I’m expected to long outlive my child unless medical technology keeps improving.’’

A Macedon Ranges councillor has suggested a suspension of Gisborne’s rapid expansion as figures reveal its population is racing ahead of expectations. Speaking at last week’s council meeting in support of a motion by Cr John Letchford to ask Planning Minister Richard Wynne to meet with the full council, Cr Russell Mowatt said Gisborne was turning into ‘‘another Sunbury’’, with a lack of adequate infrastructure and services. ‘‘The tsunami has well and truly hit Gisborne,’’ Cr Mowatt said. A settlement strategy adopted by the council in July 2011 estimated a population of 14,700 by 2036. But last week’s meeting heard that the town’s population had already passed 13,000. And under the Loddon Mallee South Regional Growth Plan, Gisborne is forecast to grow to about 17,000. Councillors Mowatt and Letchford questioned whether the state government was doing enough to help the council cope with the growth. ‘‘We as a council cannot do it, and the recent introduction of rate-capping further restricts [our] capacity to assist in this process,’’ Cr Mowatt said. ‘‘If the state government cannot invest in our town or region, let’s introduce a moratorium until they can because the current growth rate is not sustainable.’’ Cr Letchford said: ‘‘We don’t want the growth of our towns to get away from us. ‘‘The overflow of Melbourne is moving out, and increasingly the first port of call is Gisborne. We have to have more infrastructure to keep pace.’’ A government spokesman did not respond by deadline. Last week’s state budget included $325 million for statewide jobs initiatives for infrastructure and services, with upgrades to irrigation, water security, mobile blackspots, streetscaping and planning work signalled. Also funded were upgrades to public transport and $101 million for regional tourism infrastructure. A total of $427 million will be spent on road safety upgrades, most of which will be invested in regional Victoria. Matt Crossman

Islamic school knocked back By Matt Crossman A push for a $40 million Islamic school between Greenvale and Sunbury is likely headed to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal after Hume council rejected the proposal on Tuesday night. Traffic, proximity to Melbourne Airport’s flight path and potential overdevelopment of the farmland site were among grounds listed for the council’s unanimous decision to refuse a permit for a primary school at 200 Wildwood Road, Oaklands Junction.
Protests planned by a group called Stop the Mosque and Islamic School Sunbury/Oaklands Junction failed to materialise, with a small police presence outside the Broadmeadows council offices and no obvious signs of opposition. A packed chamber was told the council was supportive of the need for the school but did not believe it was an appropriate site. The application for a school, eventually catering for up to 600 pupils and 35 staff, included seven learning/community buildings, an administrative office, a library and
multipurpose building, gymnasium, canteen, sporting ovals and a grey water treatment plant on 17.1 hectares of farmland about four kilometres from the airport. More than 40 objections were received. Several residents, including Reverend Peter Wicks and Joe Taddaro, spoke in favour of the school, citing applicant Ozzi Trade Pty Ltd’s commitment to promote inclusion, while others bemoaned traffic congestion already causing problems in the wider Bulla area. Cr Casey Nunn said the concept of the school, which would be open to non-Muslim
students, was right, but the proposed location would not work. ‘‘Planning isn’t so much a decision of the heart, it’s a decision of the head,’’ she said before listing concerns about aircraft noise, the proposed Bulla bypass and inaccessibility due to the rural site. Proponents of the school indicated the decision was likely to be appealed. Demographic data shows 1.3 per cent of Sunbury’s population identifies as Islamic, but the figure is more than 22 per cent in Hume’s urbanised east.
More cameras to film illegal dumpers More CCTV cameras are being installed at rubbish-dumping hotspots in the Macedon Ranges following a massive spike in the number of reports. Council data shows 54 incidents of illegal dumping were reported in January and February, an increase of almost 100 per cent on the same time last year. The new cameras, which are being set up at undisclosed locations, are in addition to those put up in May last year after a similar spate of dumpings. ‘‘It’s something we’re concerned about,’’ mayor Graham Hackett said, urging people to do the right thing. ‘‘Things like TVs, fridges and other items that often get dumped on roadsides and elsewhere can actually be accepted free of charge at council’s transfer stations.’’ EPA Victoria estimates the state’s councils clean up more than 33,000 tonnes of illegally dumped waste every year. Cr Hackett said footage obtained by the cameras would be used to help the council’s local laws unit and police in their investigations. Illegally dumping waste is a criminal offence, and those caught face fines of up to $8857. Residents who see people dumping rubbish are being encouraged to note the time and location, vehicle registration and descriptions of those involved. For all who dig the spud A relocatable “spud hut” that was once home to itinerant pickers will be on display as Trentham celebrates its potato-growing heritage during the town’s annual Spudfest this Saturday. Event spokesman Peter Young said the two-metre by one-metre hut, built about 1900, was one of many that used to dot the district’s hills. It’s owned by the Walsh family, Trentham’s longest-standing potato farmers, who can trace their heritage back to county Cork in Ireland. The annual festival includes spud games and activities, food, market stalls, free music and cooking demonstrations. It’s at Quarry Street Reserve from 10am-4pm. Thumbs up for court facelift By Matt Crossman Legal and welfare workers have welcomed a $1.2 million upgrade for Kyneton’s ageing courthouse as part of last week’s state budget. Safe waiting spaces, interview rooms and a secure registry counter will be built as part of the long-awaited refurbishments, announced as part of a statewide investment in court safety and security. Community lawyers and welfare groups have repeatedly called for the bluestone court to be urgently upgraded, with family violence victims often forced to wait near perpetrators because of the lack of a waiting room. The public area of the courthouse has not been upgraded since it was built in the 1850s. Visiting the courthouse last Thursday, state Attorney-General Martin Pakula said the project would be completed by mid-2018. The court will also be provided with security officers and hand-held scanning wands. Cobaw Community Health chief executive Margaret McDonald said the upgrade would ensure a safe court experience for victims of family violence. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said it would fulfill key recommendations of the recent royal commission. “It’s crucial that when vulnerable people, especially those caught up in family violence, attend court they can do so in a safe manner, free from threat or intimidation,” she said. Principal Andy Kozak said the school was rapt with the funding after largely missing out in the former Labor federal government’s Building the Education Revolution program. ‘‘We’ve been lobbying for this for at least seven years,’’ he said. The money is on top of three projects announced before the budget, including $4.8 million for second stage renovations at Sunbury College, $4 million for improvements at Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School and $700,000 over several years for upgrades at Sunbury’s Kismet Park Primary School. The budget also included $2.8 billion to get the $11 billion Melbourne Metro Rail project under way and ongoing funding for the CityLink Tulla widening project. A total of $1.3 billion will be invested in regional rail, with $131 million to put more trains and services on the V/Line network. Also funded was a study of options to upgrade the intersection of Barry Street and Melbourne-Lancefield Road in Romsey. In Sunbury, while there was no specific funding for better bus services, train station parking, Bulla bypass or traffic lights at the Gap Road-Horne Street intersection, Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the council would submit strong applications under government infrastructure funds.

Honeybees get buzzing Dynamic works created with molten beeswax will be on show as part of an exhibition in Mount Macedon this month. A small band of Woodend Arts Group members, who have dubbed themselves The Honeybees, will display an eclectic collection of pieces as part of Mind Your Own Beeswax. Artist Diane Fitt, who discovered the style known as ‘encaustics’ on Pinterest, says the use of the unique method has resulted in some spectacular paintings. ‘‘There are five artists and we’re all learning, but we’ve gone down some quite different
paths,’’ she says. ‘‘There’s a lot of variation in style. Encaustic works can be very strong and bold . . . it’s a fascinating way to do it. ’’ Ms Fitt says the practice goes back to ancient times. ‘‘A lot of mummies were preserved with the encaustic method,’’ she said. for tough times
Have your say on Council’s Budget, Draft Council Plan and Strategic Resource Plan The following three documents have been prepared for public display and comment: • Draft Budget Report 2016/17 • Draft Council Plan 2013 to 2017 (Year Four) • Draft Strategic Resource Plan 2016 These documents will be on display from Friday 29 April to Friday 27 May 2016. They may be viewed on Council’s website, mrsc.vic.gov.au or in person at any of Council’s service centres in Kyneton, Gisborne, Romsey and Woodend. The Budget Report is the short-term plan which specifies the resources required to fund Council’s works and services over the next 12 months. It includes the rates and charges, which will be levied on rateable properties. The Council Plan sets out our goals and objectives for the four-year term of office (which concludes in October 2016). It is reviewed annually, when Council sets new actions, which will be undertaken in support of the goals. The Strategic Resource Plan is the medium-term financial plan. It is also reviewed annually and outlines Council’s financial strategies and resources.
By Matt Crossman Fiscal and environmental sustainability are being billed as key features of Macedon Ranges council’s proposed budget. But with the state government’s cap on rate rises in effect, the council is warning about the dangers posed by an increasingly small pool of money with which it has to work. Chief executive Peter Johnston said ‘‘operational efficiencies’’ included a proposal to reduce operating hours at the council’s service desks in Romsey and Woodend by three mornings a week. ‘‘The proposal is in direct response to the changing way that people are accessing council information and interacting with council,’’ he said, pointing to increased use of online payments. Library hours will remain unchanged. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, rates for the average Macedon Ranges property owner are likely to rise by about $50. The budget, released for public comment last Wednesday, calls for an average rate increase of 2.5 per cent in 2016-17, taking the average bill to $2069. With no new borrowings and several projects designed to improve energy efficiency, councillors last week said they hoped the community would recognise a budget that ‘‘achieved a balance’’ in the face of a tougher operating environment. Cr Sally Piper said the council encouraged submissions yet also wanted ratepayers “to understand how tight it is”.
Cr John Letchford pointed to a $1 million street light replacement program and the installation of pool covers at the Gisborne and Kyneton pools and solar panels at Romsey kindergarten as examples of projects that would lead to ongoing cost savings. Lancefield’s outdoor pool will be relined and $400,000 will go towards heating and cooling improvements at Kyneton Town Hall.

The average rate rise is the lowest in at least five years, with recent increases having approached 5 per cent. But final bills could be affected by 2016 being a revaluation year. The council has budgeted to collect $43.59 million in rates and charges to fund $80.5 million in total expenditure, with the remainder to come from other funding sources. Mr Johnston said the long-term effects of rate capping loomed large. ‘‘Going forward, we will need to carefully consider the level of works and services possible in order to meet our rate cap obligations,’’ he said, adding that contributions to community organisations could also be curtailed. Submissions on the budget will be heard at a special meeting on Wednesday, June 1, ahead of its official adoption on June 22.

Bullets ‘fired’ for charity A Trentham leadworker who raised thousands of dollars for the RSL after turning bullets into a tribute to the Anzacs is now helping a charity that supports men and women physically or psychologically affected by their service. Ron Davis recently presented one of his framed red poppies to the director of the Australian War Memorial, Dr Brendan Nelson, after collecting $5000 for RSL branches. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Mr Davis turned bullets found in the mud of an abandoned Macedon Ranges shooting range, once used by soldiers preparing for war, into commemorative poppies to mark last year’s Anzac centenary. With more bullets at his disposal, he decided to craft a new set to raise money for the charity Soldier On, which helps people involved in more recent conflicts. This time, the poppies are blue, the worldwide colour representing depression. ‘‘They really do need help because, unfortunately, about 300 soldiers from recent conflicts have committed suicide,’’ he said. ‘‘The losses in battle have only been about 40. It’s drastic and the awareness needs to be out there.’’ Mr Davis said $20 from every poppy sold would go to the charity. Double-storey units get nod Ten double-storey buildings will be built on two lots in central Sunbury after Hume council granted a planning permit last week. The application by a private developer prompted one objector to question whether it was time for Sunbury’s town centre plan, prepared in 2008, to be reviewed. Councillors heard the lots, at 40-42 Barkly Street, were in a desirable location within 300 metres of the Village Green and 400 metres of the train station. Sunbury’s Sam Rush said that as a resident who had watched the town’s growth over 30 years, he fully expected the vacant site would be developed. But he was concerned that with other developments in the street already in the pipeline, there would soon be 20-plus units ‘‘cheek to jowl’’. A report to the council showed there was a current planning permit for six double-storey buildings on an adjoining property to the south. However, Cr Adem Atmaca said councillors could only deal with the matter before them. ‘‘There’s a very long list of conditions,’’ he said. ‘‘[The application] seems to fit within that commercial zone.’’ Cr Jack Medcraft told the meeting he was satisfied that conditions relating to construction and landscaping would ensure the area’s character was not adversely affected. Hypocrisy call on Anzac wreaths By Matt Crossman Macedon Ranges council has rejected accusations of Anzac Day hypocrisy and defended its decision to quash plans for a federally funded World War I memorial in Romsey. Disgruntled members of the Romsey Gallipoli Centenary Group said they were frustrated to see councillors laying wreaths at last week’s services after the councillors had knocked back, for a second time, a proposal for a monument outside the town’s Mechanics Institute.
‘‘The hypocrisy is saddening,’’ spokeswoman Vanessa Meredith said. ‘‘The returned servicemen from this township deserve recognition.’’ The proposed memorial incorporated a sphinx on a plinth guarding a replica Romsey tribute medallion surrounded by roses. The medallions were handed out to returned servicemen by the former Shire of Romsey after World War I. Plans were first rejected by the council in August last year due to concerns about the suitability of a sphinx to represent the Gallipoli conflict and the low durability of the

chosen material. A notice of motion outlined terms on which the council would reconsider the proposal, including specific community consultation requirements. The proposal was denied approval a second time in late March, with the council saying unanimous community support had not been demonstrated.
The centenary group criticised the council’s adoption of a memorials policy in July, 2014, more than a year after it expressed an interest in constructing the memorial. But council community wellbeing director Karen Stevens said advice to the group had been consistent throughout the process. ‘‘The introduction of the policy did not significantly change the issues raised with the group,’’ she said. ‘‘Over the past two years, council has frequently met with the group and sent correspondence providing support and advice on how to interpret the policy criteria while it prepared its submission.’’
Riches of a different kind Why not? That’s the question that turned the life of Sunbury’s Nik Giouzelis upside down. The former businessman, 44, set about changing his life after realising he was deeply unhappy with the person he had become. Having been a youth worker before climbing the corporate ladder, he asked himself why he shouldn’t throw it all away to dedicate his life to doing something he loved. ‘‘I felt like there was no purpose in life,’’ he said. ‘‘I just went to work every day … I felt like I was going to have a heart attack on a Monday morning. I did some personal development stuff and realised the person I was really wasn’t aligned with the values I had.’’ After months of consideration, Mr Giouzelis quit his job and sold many of his possessions to pursue a more fulfilling lifestyle. ‘‘It’s about purpose, a different kind of wealth,’’ he said.
Having recently finished work with a community fitness club, Mr Giouzelis is preparing to spend five weeks in Africa, where he will volunteer at the Great Mountain Gorilla Project and the Potter’s Village child crisis centre, both in Kisoro, Uganda. He will also teach sports development programs in Cape Town, South Africa. Having reached his luggage capacity for donated goods, Mr Giouzelis is accepting donations to benefit the projects he will be working with when he flies out later this month. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a namesake to confirm his love of yum cha. The premises recently occupied by Kenny’s Yum Cha House was previously, and for many years, a rather nondescript noodle shop we never tried. A new family has taken over, headed by dumpling-making dad Kenny, and they’re doing very nice things. I confess to having tried “hokkien noodles” a few weeks before Christmas and being unimpressed. But then a home delivery of some yum cha items – and very good they were – re-sparked my interest. So heading to Ferguson Street with two regular CTS companions, I am filled with hope. But there is cause to be cautious, in terms of optimism. After all, normal expectations for yum cha goodies served in such a humble, corner store setting would normally fall into the realms of cheap, enjoyable, but surely frozen and mass-produced dumplings, and the like. What we enjoy at Kenny’s Yum Cha House is way, way better than that – top-notch yum cha that pretty much matches what you’ll find at any of the storied yum cha places around town. In fact, this place sort of redefines yum cha and how it can work. Yum cha doesn’t have to be Sunday brunch – it can also easily be dinner. Great yum cha doesn’t have to involve trollies – it can just as easily be a la carte. In truth, it can even be argued that ordering as you go is preferable.

Everything we have is good or better: Pan-fried dumplings ($8 for five). Pork dumplings ($5.50 for three). Chive prawn dumplings ($6 for three). Pork ribs in black bean sauce ($5.50). Chicken feet in black bean sauce ($5). Only the last mentioned are in any way less than excellent – they lack a certain spicy zing. As well, as we find that assessing a yum cha joint can, at least partially, be done on the basis of greenery, we order Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce ($12) – and that, too, is lovely. It’s been a rather smashing meal – easy, impromptu and cheap (we pay $16 per person). And on a Monday night in Williamstown!

SPORT Early wins right on target for Sunbury Sunbury Lions know that early season wins are vital for them in the Ballarat Netball League. With four out of their first five matches against sides that didn’t make the finals last season, last year’s runners-up are keen to start the season well. So far they are doing just that. On Saturday, the Lions defeated Darley 41-38 to make it three wins from as many matches. The Lions thought they had the attacking angles covered before a late off season player withdrawal that has left them still searching for a goaler. Skipper Rebecca Anstey said the side would have preferred to have one in place before the season started but that there was a shortage of quality goalers.
“With Victorian Netball League running the same time, it has made it hard,” she said. “There’s the challenge of training so hard, working and uni – everyone gets burnt out before the season … we’re mindful of that when looking at players.” As well as players coming up from B grade to help fill the void, Anstey, who is known as a defender, has had to switch ends. She said trying to work out what sort of player to pull up from the lower grades had been a challenge. “I’m more a support goaler,” she said. “The first week I played as the dominant goaler and it didn’t work. “I think me playing in goal attack was the better option and playing with a holding goal
shooter, which was what we had with Chloe Curran [last year]. “I’m hoping to get back home in defence at some point.” Anstey said the first couple of rounds had been up and down. “The first week wasn’t great, but it was good to get the win,” she said. “We pulled it all together in the second week. We’ve learnt a lot in the first couple of weeks.” Tara Murray

Gelling rapidly the goal By Tara Murray Macedon is learning on the go in the Riddell District Netball League. With a new coach and different playing lineup this season, the Cats are still finding their feet. A first-up win against Broadford was followed by a narrow loss to Rupertswood on Monday-week, before the Cats returned to the winners’ list on Saturday against Melton Centrals. Leading by one goal at each of the first two breaks, the Cats extended that to three goals at three-quarter time and five goals at full-time. The final score was 41-36. Cats coach Ciara Stewart said before Saturday’s game that from a club perspective it had been a good start to the season. “It’s a really good group of girls,” she said. “We’ve had the two extremes of playing Broadford and then Rupertswood. We’re still learning to adjust to the umpiring and to playing outdoors while also learning the teams and the league.” Stewart, in her first season with the league, said one of the hardest aspects was being unable to predict who would be playing for the opposition each week. With the Victorian Netball League running concurrently, many players are missing games due to commitments there. “I can’t preempt what teams will do each week,” Stewart said. “I don’t know who will play for each team with VNL commitments and who will be on the team sheet. “That’s the hardest thing, that I don’t know who’s going to play, but it’s the way teams are now. It’s bad luck or good luck whether you play sides with VNL players missing.” Stewart says she hopes not having VNL players will benefit her side in the long run. “We’ll look to use the same nine players every week, but you can’t account for injuries. “We’ll take time to grow, but we’ll be a consistent side. We’re not going to have players come in for one game here or there. “Due to injury, we’re yet to get the whole nine playing together; it’ll take some time.” She said the match against Rupertswood was a good test of where they sit compared to some of the top teams. “It’ll be good to play Rupertswood the second time round; I think we can play better. “I was happy to go down by five goals with the amount of errors we had. “Their coach had done her homework and worked on plays to shut down certain players. We were disappointed to let it blow out in a small period of time.” Elsewhere, Riddell and Rupertswood had massive wins over Broadford and Sunbury respectively. Nine-goal star lifts Cannons to victory Karl Brown found his kicking mojo on Saturday against Gippsland Power to lead the Calder Cannons to their first win of the TAC Cup season. Having struggled to convert in front of goal in the first four rounds, Brown kicked nine goals straight as the Cannons recorded a crunching 19.8 (122)-10.10 (70) win. Slow starters this season, the Cannons were on from the first bounce against the Power and enjoyed a 25-point lead at the first break. Their lead at half-time was 43 points, but a Power fightback reduced the margin to 22 going into the last term. The Cannons closed the game out with their best quarter. Cannons coach Andrew Johnston was rapt that his players maintained their focus. “We played well throughout,” he said. “Both sides were under the pump, having not won a game. Johnston praised the efforts of Brown, who began to show some of his form of last year and was clearly best on ground. “With Vic Metro, they’ve wanted him to play up the ground a bit more,” Johnston said. “This week we played him closer to goal and backed his strengths to get his hands on the ball. He’d been doing that but just not kicking goals. The delivery from midfield was 100 per cent better as well.” Zachary Guthrie played his best game for the Cannons, while Tyson Lever’s development continued. “Tyson’s had a good year,” Johnston said. “It was about making sure he was playing his role, and he’s got the message on how to do that. Zac has been really consistent and has a great ability to find the ball. It’s his first year in the system and yesterday showed how far he’s come.” Bradley Bernacki, Jack Reaper and Jaidyn Owen continued their good form. Johnston said that there were still nine Cannons players in contention for the final Vic Metro under-18 team. The Power is the last Victorian team without a win this season after the Northern Knights tasted victory against Tasmania on Sunday. The Knights withstood a second-half comeback from Tasmania to win 10.13 (73)- 7.13 (55).

Rivals unite for title By Liam Twomey What happens when two stars of the Central Highlands Bowls competition join forces? They win a state title. Kyneton’s Desma Budd and Bacchus Marsh’s Amy Gloury were rivals on the greens, but a decision to team up for the Victorian Bowls Championships proved a stroke of genius. Just a few months later they are state champions after claiming gold in the pairs event in Bendigo two weeks ago. “We played against each other in pennant and we were talking one day and decided to pair up and see how we went,” Budd said. “We thought, why not give it a go and see what happens?” There was nothing easy about Budd and Gloury’s quest for state championship gold. They were forced to fight through an association tournament and a regional event just to qualify. And after seeing off a number of talented teams, Budd and Gloury saved their best for the biggest stage, winning their semi-final and final by a combined 24 shots. Budd said the fact both had skipped for their respective clubs played a large part in their success. “That really helped us. We could both play the shots we needed to play,” she says. “I led and I had to do a lot of drawing and Amy was the skip. “Some of the heads I actually had to have a go at and mess it up … “Because I play skip in our pennant team that worked well for me because I could play those spots and Amy knew that.” While it was a big win for Budd and Gloury, it was also a great result for the Central Highlands Bowls competition.

Romsey golfers have been out in force over the past week. Golfers played in the region pennant competition on Saturday in Trentham looking to qualify for the final. Needing a win against Woodend to try and sneak into the final, Romsey lost 4.5 to 2.5. Woodend will face Mt Macedon in the final. Les Gaunt and Leila Beasley won the Romsey monthly in a stroke and putts competitions. Meanwhile the club’s Denise O’Meara competed in the 2016 Australian Amputees Golf Championship over the Anzac Day weekend.

Monique Stevens top scored with 17 points. The men’s side defeated Warrnambool 103-95 in overtime. The Jets made the most of their overtime shots, hitting five of six field goal attempts. Roos to appeal loss of first round points Sunbury Kangaroos will appeal a decision by the Riddell District Football League to strip them of the four points from their first round win against Romsey. In a statement on the league’s website last week, the league said due to an “unfortunate administrative oversight” the Kangaroos played an uncleared player in their match against Redbacks. The statement said as a result the club would lose the four points and their score for the first round would be nil under AFL Vic Country rule 1.3. The Redbacks have been awarded the four points. The Kangaroos won the match against the Redbacks, 12.12 (84)-6.10 (46). Kangaroos’ president Allan Walters said the club would appeal the decision. “We take full responsibility for not putting in the clearance for the player and it was
an oversight,” Walters said. “Everyone here volunteers and mistakes happen at times. Once we noticed the problem we notified the league.” Walters said the league had suspended a fine and other penalties for the breach. He said the players had been told about the oversight early last week and had responded well to it both on and off the field. “I spoke to [coach] Jarrod [Dixon] and we said if we’re meant to make finals, we’ll make it whether we get these points back or not.” Meanwhile on field, things continue to go the Kangaroos’ way as they snuck home in a thriller against Rupertswood on Saturday. Having led all day the Kangaroos lost their lead in the final quarter but hit the front in the final minutes. They got across the line by one point, 10.12 (72)-11.5 (71). Dixon was thrilled with the win.
“We controlled them early and were really good in the first half, Rupo structured up better in the second half; they had the better of the contested ball in the third quarter,” he said. “At three-quarter time with the five-day turnaround we thought we might have the run, but as it was close. The emotion side took over and that can get you through. “They were all over us in the last quarter, about midway through the last quarter we flicked a switch and turned it around.” Dixon said he was learning a lot about the players and the mental side of their game across the first three rounds. “Obviously skills and structures we can work on, you can’t help them mentally. “We have to control confidence and make sure it doesn’t turn into arrogance.”
Sharks snap too late By Tara Murray Rupertswood was left to rue a poor first quarter against Sunbury Kangaroos in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. Failing to score a goal in the first term, the Sharks had to play catch-up football all day. Halfway through the fourth quarter they actually hit the lead. But the Kangaroos didn’t go away, kicking two late goals. While the Sharks levelled the scores late, they couldn’t grab the lead. A shot on goal from the Kangaroos missed, but it was enough for them to get the win: 10.12 (72)- 11.5 (71). Sharks coach Kevin Fitzgerald said the loss could be explained by a single stat. “You can’t give a side a five-goal start, and that’s all to it,” he said. “We were very flat early. It took us the whole quarter before we started to roll. “Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time to run them down.” Fitzgerald said playing Macedon on Monday and having a five-day break would have played some part in the sluggish start. “Playing on Monday while Sunbury played Saturday makes a huge difference,” he said. “Our blokes were still getting over the Monday, which was a hard game. I was hoping we could run it out, but we can’t ignore the fact it takes a lot out of you.” Fitzgerald was pleased with how his side responded after quarter-time, and Kangaroos coach Jarrod Dixon admitted the Sharks had “destroyed” them at the contest for most of the second half. “I thought our response after quarter-time was really good, but we’re very disappointed not to have the points from last week and this week,” Fitzgerald said. “We just can’t afford to be doing that and not getting the points. The Sharks sit 1-2 after the first three rounds, having had chances to take the points in every game. “That’s footy; we’ve got to work harder. You get what you deserve sometimes.” “Those games can go either way and if you lose them it’s because there’s things you can do better. “I think we’ve got a group that can do really well. We’ve just got to have it go our way and once we get rolling we’ll be hard to play against. “We’ve got a tough start, and we’ve still got Riddell and Diggers Rest in the next two weeks. We play all the good sides straight up.” Elsewhere, Macedon made it three from three with a win over Melton Centrals; Riddell was too good for Broadford; Diggers Rest remains undefeated after beating Romsey, while Wallan beat Woodend and Lancefield smashed Rockbank. Lions’ plan pays big dividend Sunbury Lions put a plan in place on Saturday to try to defeat reigning Ballarat Football League premiers Darley, and they executed it perfectly. The Lions have traditionally struggled at Darley Park and last year were smashed off the park both times the teams played there. This time it was a different story as the Lions kicked the last five goals to beat the Devils, 17.17 (119)-14.14 (98). Lions coach Rick Horwood said the first part of the plan was to ensure the Devils didn’t get off to a fast start. “Last year they jumped us both times,” he said. “The plan was to ensure they didn’t jump us in that first quarter. They led six goals to five at quarter-time, and they had the breeze. “The boys did the job yesterday.” The Lions did their best defensive work in the third quarter when the Devils had the chance to blow the game open while kicking with the wind. “I thought our third quarter was outstanding to have us just a goal down going into the last,” Horwood said. “We worked extremely hard in that quarter to set it up.” The Devils kicked the first goal of the last term to open up a 12-point lead, the biggest of the game to that point. The Lions then found another gear. “We had a slight breeze worth one or two goals and were confident going forward,” Horwood said. “We moved [Grant] Valles forward in the last quarter and he kicked three goals.” Valles finished the game with four goals, along with Jack Landt, who’s enjoying more time in the midfield. And it’s there that Alik Magin continued his good start to the season with a best-on-ground performance. Jesse McInnery stood up in the ruck in the absence of David Kovacevic, while Ben McInnery held Devils star forward Dane Grenfell goalless. Horwood said the biggest difference from the first two matches to yesterday was a more even spread. “We had 22 contributors yesterday,” he added. “We’ve been building and it takes time with new players for it to start to work. We had four come into the team and all performed their role. “There’s a lot of competition for spots. You have to contribute and be switched on as there’s pressure from below.” Horwood said Kovacevic and Jesse Flannery, injured in the round two win over Melton, would be fit to play this week against Ballarat.
